  1. Well, good morning. Please take your

  2. Bibles and open them up to Romans

  3. uh chapter 1. Please take your Bibles,

  4. open them up to Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  5. This morning, we'll be looking at many

  6. different verses. So, you'll be flipping

  7. your Bible a little bit, but that's

  8. okay. I'll tell you where to go. But

  9. we'll start in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  10. chapter 1.

  11. Let's pray and ask the Lord to bless his

  12. word to us.

  13. Lord, you are our stronghold.

  14. You are our refuge.

  15. You give us peace in times of trouble.

  16. And Lord, however we come this morning,

  17. some of us, I'm sure, flustered,

  18. others of us may be sad,

  19. others may be angry or excited.

  20. However, we're coming this morning,

  21. Lord, we come to you,

  22. our refuge,

  23. our strength.

  24. You are a strong tower.

  25. In you we find rest.

  26. And I pray by the power of your Holy

  27. Spirit as we sit this morning, help us

  28. know that we're sitting in the presence

  29. of our almighty king.

  30. Help us know

  31. that you are pleased to meet with us

  32. this morning. Help us know and

  33. understand

  34. that we are in your perfect will

  35. because you have called us together

  36. and that is what we do.

  37. You've called me to preach, Lord, in

  38. season and out of season.

  39. Lord, that is a wonderful thing to be in

  40. your will. And you've called your people

  41. to listen to the preaching of your word.

  42. So as they listen, they're doing your

  43. will. And how good it is this morning to

  44. be doing what our father wants us to do.

  45. We thank you, Lord.

  46. Your word is precious.

  47. Speak, we pray.

  48. Amen.

  49. As we consider

  50. God's word this morning, I want us to

  51. think about the feeling of guilt.

  52. Have any of you ever felt guilty?

  53. I have. In fact, I feel guilty almost

  54. every single day. I don't know about

  55. you.

  56. And we should feel guilty in many ways.

  57. There are things that we feel guilty

  58. about. There are the serious things and

  59. the not so serious things.

  60. We can feel guilty about the serious

  61. things that we should feel guilty about.

  62. For example, if you kill someone, you

  63. should feel guilty about that.

  64. If you're violent towards someone, you

  65. probably should feel guilty about that.

  66. If you steal from someone, you probably

  67. should feel guilty about that and you

  68. probably will.

  69. But what is that?

  70. When you feel guilty about something,

  71. what is that? Where does that come from?

  72. That sense of guilt that you have about

  73. the serious things? What about the sense

  74. of guilt that you feel for the not so

  75. serious things? And and you don't know

  76. where it comes from, but you still feel

  77. guilty about it.

  78. So let's say you're watching a film and

  79. the film is really extremely violent and

  80. as you're watching for some reason some

  81. of you won't feel guilty but some of you

  82. do feel guilty about it. It's a not so

  83. serious thing but you still have this

  84. sense of guilt. What is that sense of

  85. guilt?

  86. Or you eat that extra bit of cake.

  87. You're full but you still eat anyway.

  88. You feel that sense of guilt. And it's

  89. not just because of the diet you're on.

  90. You still have a feeling of a sense of

  91. guilt.

  92. Or you're buying clothes from the shop

  93. and you see where the clothes were made

  94. and sometimes you can feel guilty about

  95. that.

  96. What is that sense of guilt that all of

  97. us feel? Do you know what it is?

  98. That is your conscience

  99. speaking to you.

  100. It's your conscience. It's that sense

  101. within you that tells you this thing's

  102. right and this thing's wrong. It's that

  103. kind of unexplainable feeling that you

  104. have where you kind of say to yourself,

  105. I should do this or I shouldn't do that.

  106. That is your conscience.

  107. And that's what we are going to talk

  108. about for the next two Sundays.

  109. the conscience.

  110. Now, why are we going to talk about the

  111. conscience? Here's why. This summer, I

  112. was picking books to read. And I picked

  113. a book and it was called Conscience.

  114. I had a wild summer,

  115. Conscience. And as I read the book

  116. called Conscience by Andrew Nelli,

  117. there's another uh writer with him.

  118. I was made more aware of this theme of

  119. conscience in the Bible. Over 30 times

  120. in the New Testament, you have the word

  121. conscience come up. And conscience as a

  122. theme, it not only pervades the Bible.

  123. Not just the word, but the theme

  124. pervades the Bible, but it also pervades

  125. our daily life. Constantly in your day,

  126. you are making decisions.

  127. And as you make the decisions, your

  128. conscience is telling you, "No, don't do

  129. that. Yes, do that. Your conscience is

  130. always speaking to you. So, we need to

  131. understand how are we going to live in

  132. light of our conscience, in light of

  133. that thing inside us that tells us you

  134. should do this or you shouldn't do that.

  135. And so, how I want to begin is this. As

  136. we look at the conscience, there are a

  137. number of things we're going to learn

  138. about the conscience. But this morning,

  139. just to build a foundation for the next

  140. two Sundays, here's what I want us to

  141. learn.

  142. Firstly,

  143. your conscience

  144. is given to you by God.

  145. You have a conscience that is God given.

  146. And we know that we have a conscience

  147. that is God-given for two reasons. You

  148. have a conscience that is given by God

  149. because number one you are conscious of

  150. God and number two you are conscious of

  151. sin.

  152. You know no matter who you are, no

  153. matter where you come from, no matter

  154. whether you're a Christian or you're not

  155. a Christian this morning, you are

  156. conscious of God and you are conscious

  157. of your sin.

  158. Here's how I know that.

  159. First, you are conscious of God. Look at

  160. Romans

    Romans 1:19

  161. 1 verse 19. Romans 1 verse 19. And in

    Romans 1:19

  162. Romans, Paul is going to begin by making

  163. this argument in in chapter 1 verse 17,

  164. he talks about this phrase, the

  165. righteousness of God. And in chapter 3,

  166. in verse around about verse 20, he uses

  167. the phrase the righteousness of God. So

  168. in chapter one, righteousness of God,

  169. chapter three, righteousness of God. And

  170. in between that sandwich is what? The

  171. sinfulness of humanity.

  172. You have the righteousness of God. You

  173. have the righteousness of God and the

  174. sinfulness of humanity. And what Paul's

  175. going to be saying in this context of

  176. Romans 1 is all have sinned and fall

  177. short of the glory of God. He's going to

  178. make sure that everybody is on the same

  179. level playing field. And here's one of

  180. the ways that we're on the same level

  181. playing field. Everybody, whether you

  182. are Christian or not a Christian,

  183. everybody is conscious of God.

  184. Romans 1 19.

  185. For what can be known about God is plain

  186. to them because God has shown it to

  187. them. For his invisible attributes,

  188. namely his eternal power and divine

  189. nature, have been clearly perceived ever

  190. since the creation of the world in the

  191. things that have been made so that they

  192. are without excuse.

  193. Everyone is conscious of God. Whether

  194. you're a Jew or a Gentile, you are

  195. conscious of God. Whether you're a

  196. Christian or you're not a Christian, you

  197. are conscious of God. So then the

  198. question is always asked, what happens

  199. to the guy who's out in the tribe in the

  200. middle of nowhere who knows nothing, who

  201. didn't grow up in your little Christian

  202. context, who can know nothing about God.

  203. What happens to that guy in that tribe

  204. in the middle of nowhere?

  205. Does he get a pass?

  206. Does he have an excuse? Because he

  207. didn't have a church near him or

  208. anything else.

  209. What does this passage say? He has no

  210. excuse.

  211. Why? Because what do the verses say?

  212. Look at all of what it says in verse 19.

  213. Everything that can be made known about

  214. God is plain to them

  215. because God has shown it to them. Verse

  216. 19. And then verse 20, his eternal power

  217. and divine nature have been clearly

  218. perceived, clearly seen. Which means

  219. this, every time you look at a tree,

  220. that tree is speaking to you. And I

  221. don't say that in a crazy way, but it

  222. is. And what is it speaking to you? I

  223. have a creator.

  224. Every time you see stars in the sky, you

  225. say, "Oh, they're so beautiful. What are

  226. those stars doing? They are singing and

  227. they are saying to you, I have a

  228. creator.

  229. Everything in all of creation is

  230. constantly speaking of God and that God

  231. exists.

  232. Meaning everybody in some deep down

  233. sense knows that he exists, leaving

  234. everybody without excuse.

  235. But what happens is people suppress it.

  236. So everybody has this conscience, this

  237. sense of right and wrong because number

  238. one they're conscious of God and number

  239. two they're conscious of sin. Everybody

  240. is conscious of sin. Turn to chapter 2.

  241. Romans chapter 2 verse 14.

    Romans 2:14

  242. Romans chapter 2 verse1 14. And again,

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  243. what Paul is doing in the middle of this

  244. righteousness of God kind of sandwich is

  245. he's showing the sinfulness of humanity

  246. and showing that everybody is on the

  247. same level playing field.

  248. Everyone is conscious of sin. Romans

  249. chapter 2:14.

  250. For when Gentiles who do not have the

  251. law by nature do what the law requires,

  252. they are a law to themselves.

  253. Even though they do not have the law,

  254. they show that the work of the law is

  255. written on their hearts.

  256. While their conscience

  257. also bears witness

  258. and their conflicting thoughts accuse

  259. and excuse

  260. them.

  261. Everybody is conscious of their sin.

  262. You see, the question could be asked,

  263. well, what about the guy who has no

  264. access to any Bible? How can he possibly

  265. know what is right and what is wrong? He

  266. doesn't have your ten commandments. He

  267. doesn't have the law of God. How can he

  268. possibly know? He doesn't have a Bible.

  269. He's in the middle of nowhere. How can

  270. he know? This verse tells us verse 15,

  271. they show that the work of law is

  272. written on their hearts.

  273. The law of God is written on our hearts.

  274. So that you don't just need to know the

  275. ten commandments to know the ten

  276. commandments.

  277. There is a a consciousness of of sin

  278. that humanity has.

  279. So that all of us know in some sense

  280. you should not murder.

  281. Where does that come from? That idea

  282. our hearts.

  283. It's generally accepted throughout of

  284. all of creation

  285. that children should obey their parents.

  286. It's written on our hearts

  287. who made up that law. And so we we have

  288. this sense of the law written on our

  289. hearts.

  290. And CS Lewis made the argument,

  291. well, if you have a sense of a moral law

  292. of right or wrong, does that not point

  293. to you that there must be a moral

  294. lawgiver?

  295. Yes.

  296. So everyone has a conscience because

  297. everybody is conscious of God and

  298. everybody is conscious of sin. And your

  299. conscience, the work of your conscience,

  300. what it does in verse in verse 15, it

  301. says this, it either accuses or excuses.

  302. Your conscience that is God-given says

  303. to you, "That is right, do it. That is

  304. wrong, don't do it." It accuses or

  305. excuses.

  306. So here is what I would encourage you to

  307. do in your life and this morning and

  308. this week.

  309. I would encourage you all to listen to

  310. your Godgiven

  311. conscience.

  312. And I want us to spend a bit of time

  313. here so that we build a foundation for

  314. the next two Sundays. Listen to your

  315. God-given conscience.

  316. Are you listening to your God-given

  317. conscience?

  318. Maybe you're ignoring God and

  319. suppressing the truth of God, trying to

  320. live your life all on your own.

  321. The trees are telling you he exists.

  322. His word says that. The skies are

  323. telling you he's he exists. His word

  324. says that.

  325. Every grain of sand is telling you he

  326. exists.

  327. Every blade of grass is telling you he

  328. exists.

  329. These are created things that have a

  330. creator. Your conscience is is telling

  331. you that. Listen to it.

  332. Your conscience is telling you that that

  333. certain things you're doing in your life

  334. are are wrong.

  335. That you are a sinner before a holy God.

  336. Listen to your conscience.

  337. Repent of your sin today.

  338. Trust in Christ for the forgiveness of

  339. your sins.

  340. Listen to your conscience, your Godgiven

  341. conscience.

  342. That's also true for Christians.

  343. Maybe there's an area in your life this

  344. morning

  345. where you've given up listening to your

  346. conscience.

  347. You perform well in certain areas in

  348. Christianity and you're following

  349. Christ.

  350. But maybe there's one area of sin

  351. that you're committing that you are

  352. walking in right now and you are not

  353. listening to your conscience, your

  354. God-given conscience.

  355. and it is saying no, but you keep saying

  356. yes.

  357. I would encourage you to listen to your

  358. conscience.

  359. Repent of your sin. Go to Christ for

  360. forgiveness.

  361. And the wonderful thing about this

  362. reality that everybody has a conscience

  363. that that puts us all on a level playing

  364. field is this. For those who are

  365. Christians who are trying to share their

  366. faith, it's this in in um in one

  367. Corinthians, I can't remember the

  368. chapter now.

  369. Maybe it's chapter 2 verse4, chapter

  370. 4:2, something like that. Chapter 2

  371. Corinthians chapter 4:2. I'll check it

  372. up later. But basically what Paul does

  373. is he appeals to everyone's conscience

  374. so that whenever you're sharing Christ

  375. with someone or talking to someone about

  376. the Lord, you can know two things.

  377. They are in some deep sense conscious of

  378. God and they are in some deep sense

  379. conscious of their sin. And I'm going to

  380. start appealing to that.

  381. We can do that in our outreach and

  382. evangelism.

  383. We should listen to our conscience and

  384. we should encourage others to listen to

  385. their conscience.

  386. But as we seek to listen to our

  387. conscience,

  388. as we develop this foundation, and

  389. there's a few things you need to

  390. remember about your conscience. It's

  391. really important.

  392. Should you always listen to your

  393. conscience? Here's what I'd say. almost

  394. always.

  395. Here's why. Three things we need to

  396. remember about our conscience.

  397. Number one, your conscience,

  398. it is corrupt.

  399. Your conscience is not a perfect

  400. conscience. You don't have a perfect

  401. sense of what is right and what is wrong

  402. in life. You can't always judge

  403. correctly and perfectly. Yes, God has

  404. given you a general sense of what is

  405. right and what is wrong. But ever since

  406. Adam and Eve fell, what happened? All of

  407. us was corrupted, including our

  408. conscience. And that is the point that

  409. Paul is making in Romans chapter 3. For

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  410. all have sinned and fall short of the

  411. glory of God. Meaning this, your

  412. conscience isn't always right.

  413. So you can be doing something and say,

  414. well, I actually feel you can you can

  415. weaponize this language. My conscience

  416. is telling me I'm good.

  417. It might be telling you you're good, but

  418. if your conscience is going against God,

  419. then it's not good.

  420. So, here's what we need to realize about

  421. our conscience. It is corrupt, and it is

  422. always underneath the will of God. So,

  423. your sense of what is right and what is

  424. wrong should always be measured up

  425. against the word of God.

  426. So listen to your conscience. But

  427. remember number one, your conscience is

  428. corrupt. So if it comes between choosing

  429. between my conscience and and what God

  430. is telling me in his word, God's word

  431. wins. My conscience loses. That's the

  432. idea. So listen to your conscience, but

  433. remember it's corrupt. Listen to your

  434. conscience, but number two, remember it

  435. is inconsistent.

  436. Your feeling of what is right or wrong

  437. is inconsistent always. Let me give you

  438. an example. You're standing in a line in

  439. a shop. Okay, we all stand in lines in

  440. in shops, right? You're standing in a

  441. line in a shop and the person who's at

  442. the till is taking absolutely ages and

  443. the line is getting bigger and bigger

  444. and bigger and you're standing near the

  445. back of the line and the thought comes

  446. into your head,

  447. everybody's on their phone.

  448. I could just skip the line,

  449. you know. I could just skip the line.

  450. I think my conscience is okay with that.

  451. And certainly if they open up the

  452. another till I'm running, but maybe I

  453. could skip if everybody's but then your

  454. conscience says no, no, no, no. We

  455. Shane, you know, things on the side of

  456. your shoulder or whatever they're

  457. speaking and say, "No, no, yes, no, yes,

  458. yes, no." And then you say, "No, I

  459. won't. I I don't do that. I don't skip

  460. lines.

  461. But then

  462. you're rushing to work in the morning

  463. and you're stuck in another line. It's

  464. the traffic line

  465. and you're late for work and you know

  466. I'm more late for work than anybody else

  467. is. You're in this massive line

  468. and suddenly you feel yourself.

  469. You switch over to the space that's

  470. empty and you start driving down.

  471. You wait. You wait. You wait. You wait

  472. for the poor old person that didn't move

  473. fast enough. You find the gap and you go

  474. in. You skip the line. But wait a

  475. second. In the shop, it was wrong. But

  476. on the road, it's okay. I mean, my

  477. conscience was fine in the car. My

  478. conscience wasn't okay in the shop.

  479. Your conscience is inconsistent

  480. because your conscience is corrupt.

  481. So, we're always measuring. We're we're

  482. always to listen to our conscience most

  483. of the time, but we're always putting

  484. our conscience under the will of God.

  485. Our conscience is corrupt. Our

  486. conscience is not consistent. And also,

  487. our conscience, it is complicated.

  488. It is complicated. So, you're to listen

  489. to your conscience, but you're always to

  490. remember it's corrupt. You're always to

  491. remember it's inconsistent. But you're

  492. always to remember that your conscience

  493. is complicated.

  494. Each and every person here, we all have

  495. personal consciences.

  496. Yes, we have maybe as Christians, we

  497. have a general sense of what God is

  498. telling us in the word, but we always

  499. have personal consciences. So, let's

  500. take the line in the shop for example,

  501. those two lines. Let's take that as an

  502. example.

  503. Some of us will say,

  504. "We're okay.

  505. I'm just not going to skip the line in

  506. the shop, but it's okay to skip the line

  507. in traffic."

  508. Okay, that's my view. Line in the shop,

  509. no line in traffic, yes. Some of us,

  510. this is where it gets complicated. Some

  511. of us say, "No skipping lines ever."

  512. Never. No.

  513. And if you do, you're the greatest

  514. sinner in the world.

  515. Some of us, this is Christians now, some

  516. of us say, "Well, I'm free in Christ. I

  517. can skip every line there is. There's no

  518. condemnation for me. I can skip all the

  519. lines I want."

  520. And then there is that other strange

  521. person who says, "I can skip every line

  522. that's in a shop, but I'll I'll never

  523. skip a line in traffic."

  524. And what makes that really complicated

  525. about all these other secondary issues

  526. is when all those people are in the same

  527. church and how are you supposed to get

  528. along then? That's what we're going to

  529. talk more about next week. The

  530. conscience is complicated.

  531. So we have a God-given conscience which

  532. makes us conscious of God, conscious of

  533. our sin. We should almost always listen

  534. to that conscience.

  535. But we should always remember that it is

  536. corrupt. It is not consistent and it is

  537. complicated.

  538. So where do we go from there? Well, from

  539. there we understand everybody has a

  540. conscience. But then what you need to

  541. realize is your conscience has a certain

  542. condition or a state.

  543. Your conscience

  544. is either

  545. guilty or innocent.

  546. Your conscience is either guilty or it's

  547. clean.

  548. This morning that is the state of our

  549. conscience. You either have a guilty

  550. conscience before God or you have a

  551. clean conscience before God.

  552. Turn to Romans or sorry, Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  553. chapter 10. Turn to Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  554. chapter 10. So, first we saw that

  555. everyone has a God-given conscience. And

  556. now we see that everyone either has a

  557. guilty conscience or a clean conscience.

  558. Everyone either has a guilty conscience

  559. or a clean conscience. And we see that

  560. in Hebrews chapter 10. Now, in the book

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  561. of Hebrews,

  562. here's what's happening in the book of

  563. Hebrews. The writer is writing to people

  564. who are suffering.

  565. And those people who are suffering,

  566. they're tempted to go back to their old

  567. ways.

  568. They're Jewish Christians who are

  569. tempted to go back to the old system of

  570. Jewish worship and practice. And this

  571. happens to us as Christians. Maybe

  572. you're following Christ. You get into

  573. suffering and whatever. And you get this

  574. feeling, I just want to give up and I

  575. want to go back to my old way of life.

  576. Have you ever felt that? If you feel

  577. that, you're human.

  578. Things aren't going well for me in

  579. Christianity, so I want to give up on

  580. that and go back to my old way of life.

  581. This is what the readers were feeling.

  582. things didn't seem to be working well

  583. for them in their suffering. So, they

  584. were tempted to go back to their old

  585. Jewish systems of practices, go back to

  586. the system of sacrifice, go back to the

  587. system of of priesthood. And what the

  588. writer in Hebrews is trying to say to

  589. them is this. Jesus is better than all

  590. of that.

  591. Jesus, he is the better sacrifice.

  592. Jesus, he is the better high priest. And

  593. so it's in that context that he writes

  594. to them and points out to them that you

  595. either have a a guilty conscience

  596. or a clean conscience.

  597. Hebrews 10 19 says this.

  598. Therefore, brothers,

  599. since we have confidence to enter the

  600. holy places by the blood of Jesus, by

  601. the new and living way that opened for

  602. us through the curtain that is through

  603. his flesh, and since we have a great

  604. high priest over the house of God,

  605. listen to this, let us draw near with a

  606. true heart in full assurance of faith,

  607. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an

  608. evil conscience or a guilty conscience

  609. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  610. What is he saying in those verses? He's

  611. saying to the people, "Here is what you

  612. have and here is what you do." In verse

  613. 19, he's saying, "Here is what you

  614. have." Verse 19, we have confidence.

  615. We now have confidence to enter into the

  616. most holy of holies. In the Old

  617. Testament system, there was no

  618. confidence.

  619. But now we have confidence because of

  620. the blood of Christ to come into the

  621. presence of God. We have confidence.

  622. And verse 21, what else do we have? We

  623. have a great high priest.

  624. We have confidence to enter into the

  625. Holy of Holies. And we have a great high

  626. priest. And this great high priest, he's

  627. better than all of the other priests in

  628. the past because all of the other

  629. priests in the past, what did those

  630. priests have to do? Those priests had to

  631. offer up a sacrifice for their own sins.

  632. But Jesus, he is both the perfect priest

  633. and the perfect sacrifice who offers a

  634. sacrifice not for his own sins, but the

  635. sins of the many.

  636. That's what we have. And what do we do

  637. then in response? Verse 22, let us draw

  638. near with full assurance, with our

  639. hearts sprinkled clean from an evil

  640. conscience

  641. or a guilty conscience.

  642. If you are in Christ this morning,

  643. you have no guilty conscience.

  644. You're washed clean by the blood of the

  645. lamb.

  646. And that is good news.

  647. That means you can approach the two

  648. words he uses with confidence

  649. and you can approach God with assurance

  650. because the state of your conscience,

  651. the condition of it is

  652. not guilty.

  653. So here's my question for the Christians

  654. in the room.

  655. Do you actually believe that

  656. when you sit here this morning?

  657. Do you actually believe

  658. I'm not guilty?

  659. Do you believe that?

  660. Sometimes I wonder,

  661. is that what stops us from singing?

  662. Sometimes we come in in the morning

  663. and we stop from singing. Why?

  664. I'm guilty.

  665. Sometimes we come in to pray with God's

  666. people.

  667. Maybe it's personality. I don't know.

  668. That might be some of it. But I suspect

  669. that some of us do not pray

  670. because we feel guilty.

  671. Some of us do not approach God and draw

  672. near to God. We draw away from God

  673. because we feel guilty.

  674. But if you've trusted in Christ,

  675. your conscience has been cleansed.

  676. You've been purified. You are no longer

  677. guilty.

  678. And if you're not a Christian this

  679. morning and you have this sense of sin

  680. within you,

  681. here's what I want to say to you. If you

  682. trust in Jesus this morning, your guilty

  683. conscience can be cleansed right now by

  684. the blood of the lamb.

  685. And that's really good news.

  686. I'll never forget the day I was

  687. cleansed.

  688. And not perfect. Clean consciences

  689. aren't perfect.

  690. But oh, the weight of guilt to have it

  691. removed.

  692. It's a wonderful thing.

  693. And I'd call on you to trust in Christ.

  694. Have that guilt removed and your

  695. conscience clean.

  696. You can have a clean conscience.

  697. But the problem can be for Christians is

  698. this. I trust in Christ. I believe in

  699. Christ.

  700. He cleans up my conscience.

  701. But then along life's journey, what

  702. happens to your conscience? Well, it

  703. goes from a clean conscience

  704. to a really, really, really annoying,

  705. sensitive conscience.

  706. Here's what happens. Have you ever got

  707. like a a bright white clean shirt or

  708. maybe bright white clean shoes

  709. and it's clean and it's new and you wear

  710. it and you just feel like, "Oh, nothing

  711. could be better.

  712. Okay, maybe I'm just sad. I don't know.

  713. But it's nice.

  714. Something nice, clean, white, whatever.

  715. But when one little mark gets on it,

  716. what happens? You notice, don't you?

  717. One little scuff, one little mark, and

  718. then another one gets on it, and you

  719. notice, and you're very, very sensitive

  720. to all the marks. That's what happens to

  721. the Christian conscience. We're we're

  722. cleansed by the blood of the lamb. We're

  723. washed clean and white. But then we're

  724. awake to all our sin.

  725. And you start going, "Oh my goodness, m

  726. maybe I was worse than I ever was

  727. before." And it draws you to pray. You

  728. see, because before I was a Christian, I

  729. was able to say whatever I wanted to

  730. say. I didn't care about my words before

  731. I was Christian.

  732. But then when I became a Christian,

  733. suddenly every word mattered.

  734. Suddenly I wasn't able to swear like I

  735. was in sport. And I felt way more guilty

  736. about it than before.

  737. My conscience became more sensitive.

  738. Uh before I was a Christian, I was able

  739. to watch whatever I wanted to watch. Now

  740. I feel guilty.

  741. Like I don't know if you noticed, but

  742. I'm over 18.

  743. But there's still over 18 movies that I

  744. feel guilty about watching.

  745. I'm over 15, but there's still over 15

  746. movies that I feel guilty about

  747. watching.

  748. Before, as a Christian, I didn't care

  749. about this stuff.

  750. But now that my conscience has been

  751. cleansed and washed by the blood of the

  752. lamb, I'm more sensitive to my sin.

  753. And that's a good thing because what has

  754. happened is the Holy Spirit has come and

  755. renewed your conscience

  756. and points out your sin, convicts you of

  757. your sin and says you got to start

  758. dealing with that.

  759. So I just want to read one verse from if

  760. you flip back to Romans 8

  761. about this idea of

  762. dealing with that sin. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  763. It says this in Romans chapter 8 verse

    Romans 8:13

  764. 13.

  765. For if you live according to the flesh,

  766. you will die. But if by the spirit you

  767. put to death the deeds of the body, you

  768. will live.

  769. What happened the moment you became a

  770. Christian? And the Holy Spirit came

  771. within you. And what did he, the Holy

  772. Spirit do? He, the Holy Spirit,

  773. began to convict you of your sin, point

  774. out your sin,

  775. and calls you now to put the deeds of

  776. the body to death, to fight your sin.

  777. Your conscience, if you're a Christian,

  778. your conscience is clean. But you will

  779. notice now your conscience is more

  780. sensitive than it ever was before.

  781. Listen to that conscience.

  782. Listen to the spirit and put to death

  783. the deeds of the body. It is interesting

  784. Paul after he became a Christian was new

  785. in Christ. He called himself the least

  786. of apostles

  787. in 1 Corinthians 15 19. Paul after he

  788. became a Christian, he called himself

  789. the least of the saints in Ephesians

  790. chapter 3:8.

  791. Paul was constantly referring back to

  792. his old life and how he was a sinner and

  793. in fact called himself the worst of

  794. sinners

  795. in one Timothy 1 verse 15.

  796. Paul after he was saved, he had his

  797. conscience cleaned, but he became more

  798. aware and sensitive of his sin.

  799. As you become more aware and sensitive

  800. of your sin, here's what you do by the

  801. power of the Holy Spirit. Do not ignore

  802. your sin. When the Holy Spirit points

  803. out your sin to you by your God-given

  804. conscience, listen to that and put it to

  805. death.

  806. Don't let it live. You have a clean

  807. conscience now. But whenever there is a

  808. sense this is wrong, by the spirit, seek

  809. to put it to death. Your conscience

  810. it is now sensitive. Your conscience has

  811. been cleaned. Your conscience is now

  812. sensitive.

  813. But there is a warning.

  814. The next thing about your conscience

  815. that we learn is this. Your conscience

  816. can be seared.

  817. Your conscience can be seared.

  818. What do I mean by your conscience can be

  819. seared? It's basically the opposite of

  820. your conscience being sensitive.

  821. So you're renewed by the blood of the

  822. lamb. Your conscience is clean and then

  823. your conscience is sensitive to all

  824. these areas in your life.

  825. But what can happen is in certain areas

  826. your conscience can be seared or put it

  827. another way, it can be numbed.

  828. Seared has this sense of burning.

  829. So

  830. I don't do a lot of cooking in our

  831. house.

  832. I will admit this publicly.

  833. You will know this practically if you

  834. know us for any length of time.

  835. But there is this pot in our house

  836. and I always forget it's a big pot.

  837. You know, you you put the boiling water

  838. in, you put the potatoes in. I know

  839. about that much. You can peel the

  840. potatoes, put it in boiling water, all

  841. that. So I put the top on. When I put

  842. the top on, it's all grand. But then I'm

  843. like, you know, I'm trying to multitask,

  844. but I can't. And so I'm texting people

  845. or whatever or voice noting or whatever.

  846. And then I come back to the pot. And

  847. almost every time, without doubt, this

  848. one specific pot in our house, I'm

  849. picturing it now. I come back to the pot

  850. and with my full hand, I put my full

  851. hand like it's almost every single time.

  852. You would think that I didn't study a

  853. day in my life. You think that I didn't

  854. have a brain? I put my full hand on the

  855. top of that pot and what happens?

  856. Burn.

  857. I I I sear it. Now, I pull it off

  858. straight away. So, it's not that bad.

  859. But what happens if I left my hand on

  860. and keep burning and burning and burning

  861. and burning and then what happens to

  862. that hand? You run it under cold water

  863. as people say, but then what happens? It

  864. becomes numb to the touch. That's

  865. searing. It's numb. You don't feel it

  866. anymore. You used to be sensitive to the

  867. touch, but now you are numb to the

  868. touch. That's what it means to sear your

  869. conscience.

  870. And Paul, he uses this word of searing

  871. conscience in First Timothy.

  872. Turn to First Timothy uh with me,

  873. please. It's the last passage I'll have

  874. you turn to. 1 Timothy chapter 4. And

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  875. first Timothy after these two sermons on

  876. the conscience, 1 Timothy is actually

  877. going to be the next book we're going to

  878. walk through.

  879. And in first Timothy, the conscience is

  880. mentioned three times.

  881. And Paul here in 1 Timothy chapter 4, he

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  882. talks about this reality of the seared

  883. conscience.

  884. So you can have a clean conscience, you

  885. can have a sensitive conscience, but you

  886. can also have a seared conscience.

  887. Paul is writing to Timothy and he's

  888. warning him about false teachers. And in

  889. chapter 4:1, he says this.

  890. Now the Holy Spirit

  891. expressly says that in the later times

  892. some will depart from the faith by

  893. devoting themselves to deceitful spirits

  894. and teachings of demons through the

  895. insincerity

  896. of liars

  897. whose consciences

  898. are seared.

  899. People who seem like they're in the

  900. faith. Paul is saying will be drawn away

  901. from that faith because of false

  902. teachers or liars who are teaching with

  903. seared consciences. They're teaching

  904. with numb consciences. In other words,

  905. they've been teaching false truths.

  906. They've been teaching falsehood for so

  907. long they've forgotten that it is even

  908. false and they've numbed their

  909. conscience.

  910. One translation puts it this way. It

  911. says, "Who have seared their own

  912. consciences."

  913. How does your conscience get seared or

  914. how does it get numbed?

  915. You do it all by yourself.

  916. This is one of the reasons we stop

  917. listening to our conscience

  918. because we sear it.

  919. We numb it.

  920. The first time.

  921. Let's talk about lying for a second.

  922. The first time, say you become a

  923. Christian, you've trusted in Christ. You

  924. have a clean conscience.

  925. The first time you lie feels like a

  926. dagger in the heart.

  927. Can't believe I just did that. It's like

  928. that one spot on the shirt. You see it,

  929. but then you keep going

  930. and you lie and you lie and you lie and

  931. you lie. You lie. What happens to your

  932. conscience? You sear it. It gets numb.

  933. And lying doesn't become that big of a

  934. deal anymore.

  935. You stop listening to your conscience.

  936. What sin is that for you?

  937. It's a sin that you keep coming back to

  938. again and again and again,

  939. but you've just given up.

  940. You've stopped listening.

  941. Anytime it comes up, you just ignore it.

  942. Be careful of searing your conscience.

  943. Do not numb your conscience.

  944. Listen to it.

  945. And is there hope for those who have

  946. seared their conscience? Yes, of course

  947. there is. What should you do if you've

  948. numbed your conscience to certain sins

  949. in your life?

  950. Confess it to God

  951. and confess it to one another.

  952. Bring it into the light. Here's kind of

  953. what happens when we numb our

  954. conscience. Say you've numbed your

  955. conscience in anger. Here's what

  956. happens. You know the way you walk into

  957. a dark room and it's dark and you can

  958. see nothing. But if you stay in the dark

  959. room long enough, what happens? You can

  960. start to see things. And in fact, you

  961. might actually think, hey, this is kind

  962. of normal.

  963. That's what can happen when we numb our

  964. conscience. If you're angry, what you

  965. can do is you can walk into that room of

  966. anger and suddenly it becomes normal and

  967. you think, "Oh, this is okay." And you

  968. numb yourself.

  969. No. See your sin,

  970. confess your sin to God, bring it into

  971. the light. Don't stay in that dark room.

  972. bring it into the light and confess your

  973. sins to one another as we heard last

  974. week in the sermon.

  975. And to confess our sins to one another,

  976. that's going to take you one being brave

  977. to do that.

  978. But also, it's going to take us as a

  979. church to be okay with hearing someone

  980. else's sin.

  981. If someone comes to you to reveal a sin,

  982. here's what your response should be.

  983. Open your arms as wide as you can and

  984. say, "Come here.

  985. I don't care what it is. I'm with you.

  986. I'm going to pray with you. I'm going to

  987. stand with you. We're going to run this

  988. race together to the end.

  989. However bad it is, however bad your sin

  990. is,

  991. it can be nailed to the cross.

  992. His blood is sufficient for all of our

  993. sins.

  994. No one can condemn you.

  995. So when someone comes, open your arms

  996. out wide and say, "Come."

  997. and then point them to Christ who has

  998. his arms open wide on the cross for them

  999. and remind them of the forgiveness that

  1000. they have in Jesus.

1001. There is hope for the one who has the

  1002. seared conscience.

  1003. There's one line

1004. that Paul says, just one sentence

1005. that Paul says, and it's in the book of

1006. Acts. It's just one line. You don't have

  1007. to turn there.

1008. He's talking about the conscience

1009. and Paul's conscience has been cleansed

  1010. clean. He's a believer. He's a

  1011. Christian.

1012. But then he says in Acts 24:E 16, he

  1013. says this. Listen.

  1014. So I always

  1015. take pains

1016. to have a clear conscience

  1017. toward God and man.

1018. Paul who has a clean conscience is

1019. saying this. I always take pains.

1020. I always make great effort. I always

1021. work really hard to have a clean

1022. conscience toward God and man.

1023. What is it that you work hard for?

1024. We all work hard for something.

1025. Do you work hard for money?

1026. Do you work hard to get a better house

1027. or a better car? Do you work hard to get

1028. the better promotion? Do you work hard

1029. to get more recognition? You are hard

  1030. workers at something.

1031. But here's what I'd encourage you to

  1032. work really hard towards.

  1033. A clear conscience

  1034. before God and man.

  1035. And that's not against grace. That's

1036. actually in response to grace.

1037. He saved me. I'm cleansed by the blood

1038. of the lamb. And I am going to work

  1039. really hard on repentance

1040. so that I have a clean conscience before

1041. God and man. Repentance is one of the

1042. hardest things you will do.

1043. Parents, when was the last time you

  1044. repented to your children?

  1045. It's hard, isn't it?

1046. Oh, I'll tell them to say sorry.

  1047. What about you?

1048. You don't. Cuz repentance is hard.

1049. And they struggle to say sorry. You know

1050. the way when you get them both together

1051. and you're like, "Say sorry. Say sorry."

  1052. And it's someone else's child and you're

1053. waiting there and you're like, "Say

1054. sorry. Say sorry." It's hard to repent,

  1055. isn't it?

1056. By the power of the Holy Spirit,

  1057. take pains,

  1058. work hard toward repentance,

1059. to have a clean conscience

1060. with God, and to have a clean conscience

1061. with people because your conscience has

1062. been cleansed by the blood of the lamb.

  1063. Let's pray.

1064. Lord Jesus, we thank you

1065. for the clean conscience that we can

  1066. have before you.

1067. I pray Lord that we would work hard,

1068. we would make pains to have a clean

1069. conscience before God and people

  1070. in your name Jesus.

1071. Amen. Let us stand and sing to the Lord

1072. in response and as we prepare our heart

  1073. for the Lord's supper.
