  5. strengthens your faith and draws you closer to

  6. Christ. Let's dive in. Hello and welcome to Christ

  7. Our Cornerstone Church podcast. My name is Pastor

  8. Logan and I'm back again with another question

  9. and answer time and I'm really excited to dive

  10. into this one. If you have questions like this,

  11. Feel free to reach out to me anytime. I will

  12. have my email at this in the bottom of the show

  13. notes, but also in At the end there. I'll let

  14. you know what that is. So the question today.

  15. I'm really excited to dive into It gets into

  16. a lot of fun things but specifically about demons

  17. and that is what is going on and mark chapter

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  18. 5 with demons being sent into The pigs like what

  19. is going on with all that stuff? So that's what

  20. we're gonna dive into in this episode and I'm

  21. ready to go into the pigs Like what's going on

  22. in mark 5 now? It's the stories in Matthew and

  23. it's also in Luke. And so there are details I

  24. will go into that aren't necessarily in mark

  25. 5 But are in the other accounts and that's another

  26. question I can answer for you of why do the Gospels

  27. all have different accounts? I actually have

  28. a blog about that. If you'd like to read that,

  29. I'll connect it in the show notes at the bottom.

  30. And so anyway, again, welcome back and glad to

  31. have you here with me. And so this is one of

  32. the wildest scenes in the New Testament to me.

  33. So I love it because there's so much going on

  34. and. Yeah, I'm just really pumped about it. So

  35. I'm going to I'm going to read from Mark five.

  36. And then I'll begin to unpack it. So here's what

  37. it says. And I'm reading from the New King James

  38. version. So it might be a little bit different

  39. than what you may have if you're going to follow

  40. along. Then they came to the other side, they

  41. being Jesus and the disciples, came to the other

  42. side of the sea, to the country of the Gedarians.

  43. And when he came, had come out of the boat, him

  44. being Jesus, immediately they were met. They

  45. were met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean

  46. spirit who had his dwelling among the tombs.

  47. So he's in a cemetery and no one could bind him

  48. not even with chains because he had often been

  49. bound with shackles and chains and the chains

  50. had been pulled apart by him and the shackles

  51. broken in pieces. Neither could anyone tame him

  52. and always night and day. He was in the mountains

  53. and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself

  54. with stones." Now, the strength of this man is

  55. important because of what I'm going to dive into

  56. in the first point about what demons are. But

  57. I'll go into that in a little bit. When he saw

  58. Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him. That's

  59. important. He cried out with a loud voice and

  60. said, what have I to do with you, Jesus, son

  61. of the Most High God? I implore you by God that

  62. you do not torment me. For he said to him, come

  63. out of the man, unclean spirit. Then he asked

  64. him, what is your name? And he answered saying,

  65. my name is Legion, for we are many. Also, he

  66. begged him earnestly that he would not send them

  67. out of the country. Another thing that I can't

  68. go into, but is also really neat when you get

  69. into demonology. Demonology being the study of

  70. demons. Now a large herd of swine was feeding

  71. there near the mountains. So all the demons begged

  72. him saying, send us into the swine that we may

  73. enter them. And at once Jesus gave them permission.

  74. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered

  75. the swine. There were about 2000. Okay. And the

  76. herd ran violently down the steep place into

  77. the sea and drowned in the sea. And it's like,

  78. Whoa, that's weird. Like, what's up with that?

  79. So those who fed the swine fled and they told

  80. it in the city and they told about it in the

  81. city and in the country. And they went out to

  82. see what had happened. Then they came to Jesus

  83. and saw that the one who had been demon possessed

  84. and the Legion sitting and had the Legion sitting

  85. clothed and in his right mind because he was

  86. naked and they were afraid and those who saw

  87. it told them how it happened to him and who had

  88. been demon -possessed and about the swine then

  89. they began to plead with him to depart from their

  90. region and when he got into the boat he who had

  91. been demon -possessed begged them begged him

  92. Jesus that he might be with him however Jesus

  93. did not permit him but said to him go home to

  94. your friends and tell them What great things

  95. the Lord has done for you and how he has had

  96. compassion on you And he departed and began to

  97. proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done

  98. for him and all marveled That was brutal to read

  99. from the New King James. I apologize. That's

  100. it's a study Bible I have and I'm not used to

  101. reading from it and so it gets a little janky

  102. for me All right, so much to unpack so much to

  103. say so let's go ahead and get started. I've got

  104. Six or seven points that I'm going to make. All

  105. right. First one being this demons need a body

  106. to dwell in. That's why they leave and they beg

  107. to go into the pigs. OK, so Jesus permits it.

  108. So why do they even ask to go into the pigs?

  109. All right, so so here's this. So demons in the

  110. Old Testament and Second Temple Judaism understood

  111. that demons were disembodied spirits. What does

  112. that mean? OK. It means that they are spirits.

  113. All right. They're kind of like ghosts, if you

  114. will. They're not fallen angels. That's important

  115. for you to know. Fallen angels are different.

  116. They are not demons. They are lingering spirits

  117. of the Nephilim that were destroyed in the flood.

  118. Who are the Nephilim? The Nephilim are, and I

  119. can't go into a whole lot of that now, but the

  120. Nephilim are, they were the offspring of when

  121. the sons of God, the fallen angels, looked upon

  122. the daughters of men. You can read about this

  123. in Genesis six and had relations with them and

  124. thus created the Nephilim. The Nephilim were

  125. huge giants. That's where we get Goliath from

  126. and things like that. They were massive giants.

  127. And a lot of the reason why God sent the flood,

  128. because they were these crazy half breeds. They're

  129. half divine, half human. And that's where we

  130. get a lot of the stories of the Titans like Hercules

  131. and a lot of that stuff. I'm not going to go

  132. into all that, but just know that's one of my

  133. favorite things to talk about if you ever want

  134. to talk about it. But anyway, that's important

  135. to know. So when they were destroyed in the flood,

  136. their physical bodies, their spirits remained

  137. as lingering spirits. OK. And so demons seek

  138. embodiment. They seek to torture us as human

  139. beings made in the image of God because they

  140. are not. They want a physical host with which

  141. to torment, okay? And so that's why they cling

  142. to this man. And when they're confronted by Jesus,

  143. they ask for another physical vessel, just any

  144. vessel. It can be an animal, it can be a person,

  145. but they just want any vessel so that... would

  146. be the pigs. They see the pigs and because they

  147. knew that Jesus was not going to allow them to

  148. go into another person because Jesus is about

  149. bringing freedom. OK, from captives. And that's

  150. part of this. And so here's the second part.

  151. The demons know exactly who Jesus is. All right.

  152. Well, you like, well, yeah, because they're demons.

  153. They know everything. No, they don't. I'm going

  154. to get into that in a little bit. They don't

  155. know everything. How do they know who Jesus is?

  156. OK, well, there are many theologians. And I take

  157. to this myself, I believe where Jesus was baptized

  158. would have been right there where the demons,

  159. the pigs run into the sea. And so the demons

  160. being in that country would have seen Jesus be

  161. baptized, would have seen the Holy Spirit descending

  162. upon Jesus and the voice of God saying, this

  163. is my son in whom I'm all pleased. And so they

  164. would have known who he was. They know he's divine.

  165. Okay. And they know of a permanent judgment that

  166. is coming because of him. Okay. They know, they

  167. know there's a permanent judgment coming period,

  168. but they know of the prophecies. And so they

  169. know that it's, it's, he's the reason. Okay.

  170. And so they're terrified, the demons, they're

  171. terrified at this moment that Jesus will send

  172. them to their final destruction, their final

  173. judgment in hell. And this is why they beg for

  174. an alternative. They want to go into some other

  175. place, but they don't want to be sent out of

  176. the region. They want to be sent into the pigs.

  177. And so again, the region part I would love to

  178. go into, but I can't. But even powers of darkness,

  179. they recognize the authority and the identity

  180. of Christ before many humans do. As a matter

  181. of fact, I mean, we're going to see that in just

  182. a second. We see that when they beg him to leave,

  183. which you read about in other passages. as well.

  184. And so here's the third point. So the presence

  185. of the pigs tells us something very important

  186. for us today. One, it tells us that it's Gentile

  187. territory. What does that mean? Well, we are

  188. Gentiles. We are not Jewish by lineage and by

  189. heritage. And so we are Gentiles. And so. Jews

  190. had nothing to do with pigs because they were

  191. considered unclean. So they wouldn't have used

  192. them for business. They wouldn't have been using

  193. them to eat. And so this tells us they were pigs,

  194. that this place was a Gentile region. So the

  195. Gentiles, this tells us that there's Gentile

  196. region. This is Gentile land. OK, so Jews don't

  197. raise pigs. As I said, they don't eat pigs. They

  198. don't touch pigs. And so they didn't own pigs.

  199. So this story and what is happening in this region

  200. is Gentiles and it's and this is a foreshadowing,

  201. which brings to my next point, a foreshadowing

  202. of Christ's mission to the Gentiles as well.

  203. So like Jesus didn't just come to redeem the

  204. people of Israel, the Jews, he came to redeem

  205. all of mankind. And this foreshadows that because

  206. this is a powerful scene, a preview of the mission

  207. of Jesus breaking out beyond Israel. And so Jesus

  208. isn't only freeing Israelites from bondage. He

  209. is freeing everyone. And so he comes for the

  210. Gentiles too. And that's important that you see

  211. that in this. And so, which brings me to my next

  212. point, which is demons don't know everything,

  213. only God does. And so again, I'm going back to

  214. the pigs here. It's fascinating because demons

  215. are intelligent. Like, don't get me wrong. They,

  216. they, they are intelligent. But they're not omniscient.

  217. Omniscient is a theological term for all knowing.

  218. And so they didn't foresee what happened next.

  219. And what would that be? That would be the moment

  220. they enter the pigs. Remember, they begged not

  221. to be in that final judgment. And so they enter

  222. into the pigs, but then the pigs rush down a

  223. cliff and they drown in a water. And in so doing

  224. so, the demons run literally straight into the

  225. very judgment they're trying to escape. Now you'd

  226. be like, why? How do you know that? It has to

  227. do with the water. OK, and it has to do with

  228. the study of Sheol and where Sheol is and water

  229. and all that, which, again, I can't get into,

  230. but just know that it brought them. They're no

  231. longer able to to be in something. And so therefore,

  232. they're then. brought into the judgment of Sheol.

  233. Uh, and so Jesus allows their request to go into

  234. the pigs because he knows that destruction is

  235. coming. And remember what I said, he would not

  236. have allowed them to go into another person to

  237. torment those people. Cause Jesus comes to bring

  238. freedom. All right. So that's why he's like,

  239. okay, pigs, that's fine. Cause I also know where

  240. those pigs are going to go. Those pigs were like,

  241. yeah, this isn't right. This isn't normal. And

  242. they run headlong into the water. And so this

  243. moment exposes the limits of demonic knowledge

  244. and the sovereignty of Christ over all spiritual

  245. powers, which I think is really awesome. And

  246. so hopefully so do you. Now, let's let's continue

  247. to think about this pig thing. So it says in

  248. Mark that there were two thousand pigs, two thousand

  249. pigs. So think about that. There's two. They

  250. said they're a legion for they are many. There's

  251. two thousand demons, at least inside of this

  252. man. That's terrifying. And again, I told you

  253. to look at the strength of this man. What did

  254. I tell you? Nephilim were they were giants, right?

  255. So it tells you the strength of so then you've

  256. got two thousand at least these demons. So now

  257. you're getting an idea of how strong they are.

  258. So, but why, why does it tell us 2000 pigs? Like

  259. why that detail? And that detail isn't in the

  260. other accounts, but it's important. They, the

  261. others say there are many pigs. 2000 though is

  262. important because in modern day time, okay, this

  263. is somebody's business. So in modern day time,

  264. all right, that would equate to about a half

  265. a million dollars of somebody's business and

  266. it's now gone. And so why does that matter? This

  267. is why it matters. Remember they, They beg him

  268. to leave. So this isn't a hobby farm. This is

  269. a massive commercial operation. This is someone's

  270. livelihood. All right. So when the pigs die,

  271. the townspeople, they don't rejoice that the

  272. demonized man is free. This man who has terrorized

  273. them and lived in a cemetery and in a mountain

  274. terrorizing the region. They don't care about

  275. that. They don't celebrate the power of God.

  276. They actually focus on the financial loss of

  277. it all. And so they actually beg Jesus to leave.

  278. And this is a sobering moment. Why? Because they

  279. choose monetary comfort. They chose money over

  280. spiritual freedom. They'd rather have their pigs

  281. than to have Jesus. And so the question is for

  282. you and me, do you choose monetary gain over

  283. Jesus? Do you choose idolatry over Jesus? It's

  284. just something to think about. And then the last

  285. one is this, something that you should really

  286. celebrate. And that is that the man was restored.

  287. He got his humanity back. And so the man who

  288. was once naked, who was raging, who was violent

  289. and isolated is now described as clothed, right,

  290. in his right mind and sitting at the feet of

  291. Jesus. He's forever changed. So he gets his humanity

  292. back. He gets his dignity back and he gets his

  293. identity back. And so this is what Jesus does.

  294. He restores people spiritually, emotionally,

  295. mentally, and socially. And the man becomes the

  296. first missionary to the Decapolis, a Gentile

  297. region, declaring what Jesus had done for him.

  298. So with all that being said, why did the demons

  299. go into the pigs? Because demons seek a body.

  300. They feared judgment because they were in a Gentile

  301. territory. All right. because Jesus is signaling

  302. of his coming salvation for the whole world.

  303. It's showing that demons don't know everything

  304. and that Jesus is sovereign and over them. Okay.

  305. And because the townspeople, they value money

  306. over deliverance. So these are all the points

  307. I want you to remember. And because in the end,

  308. Jesus shows his heart. He restores broken humanity.

  309. And that's the real miracle of Mark 5. I hope

  310. that makes some sense for you. I hope that helps.

  311. And yeah, feel free to share this with somebody.
