  1. You're listening to the Christ Our Cornerstone

  2. podcast, a ministry of Christ Our Cornerstone

  3. Church in O 'Neill, Nebraska. I'm Pastor Logan

  4. Merrick, and it's our prayer that this message

  5. strengthens your faith and draws you closer to

  6. Christ. Let's dive in. We've been walking through

  7. the book of Mark and we are just about done.

  8. And I'm just gonna remind you guys, we actually

  9. will not finish out Mark in the traditional sense,

  10. like I'm not gonna. I'll get to Mark 16, we may

  11. skip some stuff, because I preach through the

  12. death and resurrection of Jesus on Easter. And

  13. so we'll skip those parts and move ahead. So

  14. we're gonna be done sooner rather than later,

  15. and then we're gonna jump into the book of Daniel,

  16. and then we'll go into the book of Revelation.

  17. All right, if you are taking notes, the title

  18. of my sermon today is The Kiss That Started a

  19. Revolution. And the big idea that I am driving

  20. home that you can write down, it'll be right

  21. up here, is Christ's revolution is not about

  22. power, might, and weapons, but about weakness,

  23. obedience, and resting in the sovereign plan

  24. and finished work of Christ. So as you're writing

  25. that down, I wanna do an experiment with you

  26. guys. So there's a professor of history at the

  27. University of Florida. I think his name was John

  28. Somerville or something like that. But he would

  29. do an experiment and he did it for years. And

  30. the experiment goes like this where he would

  31. have all of his students come in and he would

  32. ask them to imagine a scenario He would say there's

  33. there's two Essentially two avenues you could

  34. go. Which one do you think you are? Okay, so

  35. here is the Imagined scenario. All right So you

  36. are walking down the mean streets of O 'Neill

  37. and It's just you and you look up ahead and you

  38. see a really small, very frail elderly woman

  39. and she's got a very big purse hanging, you know,

  40. just hanging on to it the best she can. She's

  41. got, she might even, you might even see some

  42. money coming out the top of it a little bit.

  43. So you have a choice in that moment, right? Right?

  44. Okay So there there's two choices and I'm gonna

  45. make sure that I I'm gonna read them So I make

  46. sure I say them correctly in the way that he

  47. he has it but he says It suddenly occurs to you

  48. that she's very little and very old and it would

  49. be incredibly easy To just knock her over and

  50. take her purse Okay Do you do it? Okay, so if

  51. you if you would be the one to knock her over

  52. and steal her purse raise your hand Nobody oh

  53. come on I Was a test passed Congratulations,

  54. so so then why don't you why don't you knock

  55. her over? Take her purse and say good luck surviving

  56. grandma Because it's wrong Why is it wrong? Because

  57. it's hers, not ours. So the professor says there's

  58. two possible answers. The first comes from what

  59. he calls shame and honor culture, and I've talked

  60. a little bit about that in another sermon. The

  61. shame and honor culture basically means this.

  62. You don't do it because it would make you a despicable

  63. person, unworthy of respect. And it could also

  64. dishonor your family, right? So that's one. People

  65. would despise you for picking on the weak and

  66. you would despise yourself for doing it, hopefully

  67. so. Write this down for me. It wouldn't be strong

  68. and strength is critical in an honor culture.

  69. This is what is called Self -regarding ethic.

  70. So just so you guys know you're in ethics class

  71. today because we're gonna be talking about ethics

  72. But this is known as self -regarding ethic you

  73. are thinking about yourself Your reputation and

  74. your tribe without me going to the next one Just

  75. yet. How many of you guys would say? Yeah. No,

  76. I think that that's probably me, I would probably

  77. choose not do it because I don't want to dishonor

  78. myself, my family. How many are scared to even

  79. raise your hand? Trace is like, I'm never scared

  80. to raise my hand or talk. So then there's the

  81. second answer, okay? What if instead of thinking

  82. about yourself, What do you think about? If you're

  83. not thinking about yourself and how taking her

  84. out would affect you, who else would you be thinking

  85. about? Her, right? So you begin to think about

  86. her. You put yourself in her shoes and you think

  87. about the pain it would cause her. She may even

  88. depend on that money for rent or for groceries.

  89. You might even ask if I mug her, what happens

  90. to her? What happens to the people who depend

  91. on her? You think about the woman, so you don't

  92. do it. Write this down. That's an other regarding

  93. ethic. You are putting the other person ahead

  94. of yourself. So as you write that down. That's

  95. an other regarding ethic. You are putting the

  96. other person ahead of yourself. How many of you

  97. guys would say, I am in camp number two? You

  98. wanna be others facing. I mean, you guys say

  99. I'm in camp number one and I'm me facing. Are

  100. we all scared? Linda, at least you're honest.

  101. Linda's like sometimes, right? Yeah, I can see

  102. that. After walking through those scenarios,

  103. here's what's funny. You guys are actually honest,

  104. okay? When he did this with students, how many

  105. of you think said, yes, they belong in the self

  106. -regarding aspect? Zero. Every year, no matter

  107. the class, no matter the class sizes, no matter

  108. the cultures, no matter the religions, no matter

  109. the... Whatever background they came from no

  110. one ever picked the first one They always pick

  111. the second one. Why do you think that is? Yeah,

  112. you start worrying about it comes back to the

  113. shame and honor thing right You start thinking

  114. about what is what what are other people gonna

  115. think about me, right? But here's what's awesome

  116. And this is what the professor would point out

  117. to them. He said, you may not realize it, but

  118. the idea that you put the other person ahead

  119. of yourself rather than thinking of yourself

  120. first comes from Christianity. Your morals have

  121. been shaped by Christianity. He described it

  122. this way. An ethical system based on honor is

  123. self -regarding, while one based on charity is

  124. other -regarding. With honor goes pride rather

  125. than humility, dominance rather than service,

  126. courage rather than peaceableness, glory rather

  127. than modesty, loyalty rather than respect for

  128. all. So he says, think about it. That's one of

  129. my favorite things, by the way, whenever I am...

  130. doing a lot of apologetic stuff. And when I would

  131. go on the campus and talk to college students,

  132. one of my favorite things, defenses, is a defense

  133. for a moral system. Because the one thing, if

  134. you're here this morning and you are not a believer,

  135. you would say you don't believe in anything.

  136. The biggest thing that you have going against

  137. you is you live a life of morals. and can't explain

  138. why. And that was the professor's point that

  139. Christianity has so shaped the world and especially

  140. our country but the world that they know to be

  141. others facing even if they are inward facing,

  142. right? His whole point was just think about for

  143. a moment how Christianity has impacted your life

  144. and you didn't even realize it. Pretty incredible,

  145. right? I would say that's a pretty incredible

  146. revolution. And so, think about this. How many

  147. ethical systems throughout history have been

  148. built around honor and shame? Almost all of them.

  149. Civilizations were dominated by this way of thinking,

  150. but then something happened that began to shape

  151. cultures and civilizations in a radically different

  152. way. What do you think that was? Christianity,

  153. right? Most people, including college students,

  154. have never stopped to consider just how deeply

  155. Christianity has shaped the way they think about

  156. right and wrong. Even those who are critical

  157. of the church and Christianity, they will rant

  158. about Christianity and the church and all that's

  159. wrong with it. And then when you start to really

  160. burrow down, my favorite thing is to go, so you

  161. just want a better Christianity. A pure Christianity,

  162. one that looks truly like Christ. Yeah, me too!

  163. Right? So they believe that we're wrong, but

  164. then as they start to really work it down, they

  165. start going, oh man, I am really living a life

  166. of a Christian even though they are not Christians.

  167. Does that make sense what I'm saying? And so

  168. what are these distinctly Christian ideas that

  169. still have the power to shape our consciousness

  170. today? And that's what we're gonna discuss this

  171. morning. Before we go to our main text, I want

  172. us to go to, turn with me to Luke chapter six,

  173. because I wanna show you guys something. Luke

  174. chapter six, and we're gonna start in verse 22.

  175. Luke chapter six, starting in verse 20. This

  176. is also in Matthew chapter five, by the way.

  177. It's known as the Beatitudes. So we're gonna

  178. read 20 through 22, and then I'm going to go

  179. down to 24 and 26. And he lifted up his eyes

  180. on his disciples and said, blessed are you who

  181. are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed

  182. are you who are hungry now for you shall be satisfied.

  183. Blessed are you who weep now for you shall laugh.

  184. Blessed are you when people hate you and when

  185. they exclude you and revile you and spurn your

  186. name as evil on the account of the Son of Man.

  187. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy for behold

  188. your reward is great in heaven and for so their

  189. fathers did to the prophets. But woe to you who

  190. are rich. For you have received your consolation.

  191. Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be

  192. hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall

  193. mourn and weep. Woe to you when all people speak

  194. well of you, for so their fathers did to the

  195. false prophets." So, here Jesus is giving us

  196. a very concise picture of the contrast between

  197. his kingdom and a worldly kingdom. So real quickly,

  198. again, we're in ethics class. Let's do this together.

  199. What are the things that you see being set apart

  200. that are values of the kingdom and values of

  201. the world? Because Jesus is comparing and contrasting,

  202. right? Because here's something we need to think

  203. about. No matter the political group, Democrat,

  204. Republican, Independent, Libertarian, whatever,

  205. everybody has a value system that they're pushing,

  206. right? The farther we go down the road, the more

  207. the value systems go like this, but here's the

  208. difference though. Here's why none of them are

  209. the kingdom of God values, because at the end

  210. of the day, what sits upon the top of those value

  211. systems for those political organizations is

  212. power, money, and politics. Then the rest of

  213. the values flow from underneath that. But Jesus,

  214. it goes the other way around. So, what are the

  215. values that you see in Luke chapter six, Jesus

  216. pointing out the different value systems? What

  217. do you see? Poverty? And I'm going to go into

  218. a little bit more of that too. So in case anyone's

  219. like, so does that mean if you've got money,

  220. any sort of money, any sort of a jingle in your

  221. pocket, you're going to hell? Nope. I'll go into

  222. that a little bit. But poverty, okay. Poverty

  223. represents what? What? Humility. I have weakness,

  224. right? What else do we see? Yeah Again weakness

  225. and poverty, right? What about if you're going

  226. hungry now like you're pointing out if you're

  227. going hungry now What what does what is that?

  228. That's a suffering, right? So suffering and then

  229. there was another part there where he talks about

  230. for you will be something because of me? Rejected,

  231. right? So you have in the system of the kingdom

  232. of God, you have a weakness of poverty, suffering

  233. and rejection, but then the list is inverted.

  234. So in the kingdom of God, that list is inverted,

  235. right? So, but now you go to the bottom and you

  236. see him going, okay, but for those who are rich,

  237. Boom. For those whose name is bright reputation,

  238. boom. He's saying he's giving you the flips,

  239. right? The invertedness. So the reason why I

  240. point that stuff out is because in Mark 14, we're

  241. going to see a revolution unlike any revolution

  242. the world has ever seen. It will begin with a

  243. kiss of betrayal, swords and soldiers, but it

  244. will not advance through power, might or weapons.

  245. Christ's revolution will advance through weakness,

  246. obedience, and resting in the sovereign plan

  247. of the Father. So let's go ahead and go there

  248. now. Last week, we were in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  249. We're still there. We're just at a new place.

  250. So Mark chapter 14, starting in verse 43. Everybody

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  251. ready? If you don't have a Bible, you can read

  252. along with us right up here. And immediately

  253. while he was still speaking, Judas came, one

  254. of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords

  255. and clubs from the chief priests and the scribes

  256. and the elders. Now the betrayer had given them

  257. a sign, saying, the one I will kiss is the man

  258. seize him and lead him away under guard and When

  259. he came he went up to him at once and said rabbi

  260. and he kissed him and they laid hands on him

  261. and seized him but one of those who stood by

  262. drew his sword and struck the servant of the

  263. high priests and cut off his ear and Jesus said

  264. to them Have you come out as against a robber

  265. with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after

  266. day I was with you in the temple teaching and

  267. you did not seize me But let the scriptures be

  268. fulfilled and they all left him and fled Verse

  269. 51 and a young man followed him with nothing

  270. But a linen cloth about his body and they seized

  271. him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away

  272. naked All right If you're taking notes, I've

  273. only got two points First point is this, the

  274. first true revolution. The first true revolution.

  275. These two kingdoms that we're talking about,

  276. the kingdom of the world, the kingdom of God,

  277. they have priorities and values and right now

  278. they now will dramatically meet in the garden.

  279. We see these two kingdoms are now clashing. And

  280. last week we began with Jesus asking for the

  281. cup to pass from him. And now we move forward

  282. into the story as Judas arrives and betrays Jesus

  283. with a kiss. You guys know the saying, the kiss

  284. of death, a kiss of death? It's in our dictionaries.

  285. I didn't know this until now, but kiss of death,

  286. because like I always hear when I hear, when

  287. I say it out loud, when I read it, I hear Cy

  288. Robertson from Duck Dynasty who's like, give

  289. them the kiss of death, like when they're hunting

  290. beavers. So that's what I hear. I didn't realize

  291. that kiss of death, literally from our pop culture

  292. to our dictionary, it comes from this. It comes

  293. from Judas. So it refers to, write this down.

  294. It refers to an intimacy with something that

  295. ultimately causes your destruction. Think about

  296. that for a moment. It refers to an intimacy with

  297. something that ultimately causes your destruction.

  298. As soon as I saw that in the dictionary, I immediately

  299. thought of, and if one of you are in this room,

  300. more power to you, I just don't understand you.

  301. People that raise venomous snakes and spiders,

  302. I'm like, it's coming. Kiss of death is coming

  303. one day. Those aren't meant to be played with.

  304. But here's what's interesting about that definition

  305. when we think about Judas. It obviously shows

  306. us that Judas wasn't intimate with Jesus. Don't

  307. be thinking of this Don't be thinking of the

  308. word intimate in a way that is sexual. Think

  309. about it in a way that is learning, that is a

  310. spiritual father and a spiritual son. Think of

  311. it as a father and a son. Think of it in that

  312. way, knowing each other well, not in a sexual

  313. way. So it's obvious that Judas didn't know Jesus

  314. very well. Would you agree? Because if he did,

  315. There would be no such thing as the kiss of death,

  316. but there would be a such thing as the kiss of

  317. life Because Jesus brings life but Judas's problem

  318. is is he was very intimate with the kiss of death

  319. because he was more intimate with swords and

  320. clubs than he was with life and surrender But

  321. here's something that we've got to discuss for

  322. a moment Why did Judas betray Jesus with a kiss

  323. to begin with? Why not simply just point him

  324. out and go, that's him, right there, arrest him,

  325. the bearded guy. You ever thought about that?

  326. Because then everybody would have known he was

  327. betrayed. He was trying to hide his betrayal.

  328. Yeah. I think when he walked up with a bunch

  329. of people with swords and clubs, they kind of

  330. knew in the moment. But it's one of those things

  331. where But I don't disagree. But there is something

  332. about the subterfuge of it all, right? I think

  333. that Judas was expecting a resistance. I think

  334. Judas was expecting a resistance, and so therefore

  335. he shows up with some Roman soldiers, with the

  336. high priest guards. and they've all got swords

  337. and clubs. And you honestly, can you really expect

  338. Judas to think differently? Because I want you

  339. to think for a moment. We just read that somebody

  340. had a sword on him. If you read the other Gospels,

  341. we know who that was, right? Peter. But there's

  342. another person in their party that doesn't get

  343. a lot of talk, but his name is also Simon. Simon

  344. the Zealot. Do you know what zealots were? Assassins.

  345. They're religious assassins. Their entire thing

  346. is they want to bring down the government. So

  347. Simon the Zealot has been training under the

  348. guise of religion and doing this for God that

  349. he is going to take out Rome. So if you know

  350. that you have a former Assassin and a guy who

  351. already has a sword and probably all of them

  352. have some sort of daggers because if you Recall

  353. Jesus would tell them when he sent them out Right

  354. to have a weapon on you So so it's not exactly

  355. wrong of Judas to be like yeah, they're definitely

  356. gonna there's gonna be a resistance, right? I

  357. mean, I probably would I probably would be going

  358. in thinking I'm going to have to fight So you

  359. can't really blame him, but Jesus points out

  360. to him what? What does he say? Yeah, yeah, am

  361. I am you have been with me for years now Judas

  362. You guys he starts pointing at the Pharisees

  363. and the high priest in the garden you guys have

  364. seen me you had every chance You guys know what

  365. I'm about and yet you come You approach me with

  366. swords and with clubs as if I am some sort of

  367. criminal But Jesus is like this isn't about political

  368. power Jesus essentially says what I've written

  369. down is is do you think I'm leading some kind

  370. of armed rebellion? Do you think I'm declaring

  371. guerrilla warfare to overthrow the existing order?

  372. Jesus is saying, in effect, you come at me with

  373. swords because you think I will retaliate with

  374. swords, and that shows you, you don't understand

  375. the kingdom I am from. The kingdom of God is

  376. different from every kingdom of this world. But

  377. they were aware that Jesus was starting a revolution,

  378. right? But he was starting a revolution unlike

  379. any revolution. the world had seen. I want you

  380. to think about revolutions of this world that

  381. have happened. I want you to think about administrations,

  382. how they come and go. Political parties, how

  383. they rise and fall. Leaders are replaced, the

  384. language changes, the methods change, but the

  385. values at the top of the list often remain the

  386. same. I already said them earlier. Money, power,

  387. and politics. The faces change. The political

  388. powers change back and forth, but the one thing

  389. that never changes are those three points. The

  390. faces change, but the fundamental pursuit of

  391. power remains. Other revolutions may bring about

  392. a new group of people into power, but Jesus isn't

  393. simply bringing a new group of people to the

  394. top. Write this down. He is bringing an entirely

  395. different administration of reality the kingdom

  396. of God Jesus is not a revolutionary you can stop

  397. with swords because his revolution isn't about

  398. the sword But Judas isn't the only one who doesn't

  399. understand Who else doesn't understand Peter

  400. yeah Peter so Peter and let's just Let's think

  401. about this for a second. Peter draws a sword,

  402. Malkus who, that is the high priest's guard,

  403. he guards the high priest. Malkus is just standing

  404. there with his sword out and Peter's like, yeah,

  405. and he just chops this dude's ear off, right?

  406. Think about it for a moment. How wild it would

  407. be That everyone's everyone's like got the sword,

  408. right? You know, I mean and all the sudden Peter's

  409. like I'll go he just cuts this dude ear off and

  410. then it's like And then Jesus is like He just

  411. goes up and he's like, hey man, I'm sorry about

  412. that Right literally I would be like I would

  413. be like hey We should probably like if I malcus

  414. I would look at the high priest be like hey we

  415. should probably rethink our priorities because

  416. I Didn't have an ear and now I have an ear again,

  417. and it didn't require any stitches or doctors

  418. or hospital visits But like no like nobody's

  419. nobody's freaked out by this I mean I would be

  420. I would still be like hey Can we go back to the

  421. part where the the ear went back on? Like, it's

  422. nuts, but what is Jesus saying when he literally

  423. just reaches down, picks the ear up, and he puts

  424. it back on Malchus? What is he saying in that

  425. moment just by doing that? I'm God. I'm fully

  426. in control of this moment. It has to go this

  427. way, Peter. We're not going to create a revolution

  428. and people's lives aren't going to be changed

  429. by you doing that. By the way Mark it down share

  430. it don't care. This is what I'm gonna tell you.

  431. This is why Islam does not work It's forceful

  432. conversion it's also why when we look at When

  433. when the Catholics were literally killing people

  434. for not converting to Christianity it didn't

  435. work Force conversion doesn't work and that's

  436. what Jesus is saying in this moment. We're not

  437. forcing anybody We're not doing this by weapons

  438. What you have to see and what you have to know

  439. Peter is the way this revolution comes about

  440. is by full surrender and resting and the sovereignty

  441. of the father I Don't know if you guys feel like

  442. this, but I definitely do I I when I read anytime

  443. I see Peter Putting his foot in his mouth doing

  444. something ridiculous where he acts out of anger

  445. and and and Zealousness I so identify with Peter

  446. in that moment every time Now I can feel the

  447. questions in your minds going So pastor Logan,

  448. are you saying that we should be pacifist? Nope

  449. Are you saying that we shouldn't have jails military

  450. not saying that either? What I am saying is those

  451. institutions they have legitimate purposes Myself

  452. and other men and women in this room have served

  453. in the military. We've got sheriff highway patrol

  454. We support all of those things But here's the

  455. difference though Those things have legitimate

  456. purposes in a fallen world But they can only

  457. go so far Here's what I'm saying The systems

  458. of this world, even when they restrain evil,

  459. because that's what they're supposed to do, and

  460. pursue justice, can never bring about the true

  461. justice and peace that humanity ultimately needs.

  462. Would you agree? They operate within a world

  463. still governed by the old values of power, force,

  464. and self -preservation. The kingdom of Christ

  465. operates according to a completely different

  466. set of values. true justice, peace, humility,

  467. integrity, sacrifice, and love. And this is where

  468. it gets really personal. Too often, we settle

  469. for the kiss of death. We react in ways that

  470. demands retribution right now. And by the way,

  471. you're not wrong for wanting justice. If someone

  472. is murdered or... Something happens and you want

  473. retribution. You're not wrong for wanting that.

  474. You want to know why? Because you're made in

  475. the image of God. God demands justice too. But

  476. typically, sometimes you can go too far in wanting

  477. retribution and you try to take things into your

  478. own hands. But when we respond by simply adopting

  479. the values of the kingdom of this world, we aren't

  480. participating in the revolution that Christ began.

  481. We're just slapping a new coat of paint on the

  482. same old kingdom. And Jesus' revolution is completely

  483. different. He says, I will put others ahead of

  484. myself. I will love my enemies. I will serve

  485. and sacrifice for others. I will not repay evil

  486. with evil. I will overcome evil with... I will

  487. give up my power. I will give up my life. Weakness,

  488. poverty, suffering, and rejection. are not at

  489. the top of the list. His revolution comes without,

  490. are now at the top of the list, sorry. His revolution

  491. comes without the sword. And this is the first

  492. true revolution. And I wanna say this, as I told

  493. you guys, I'm not saying that wealth is bad.

  494. I'm not saying it's better to be poor. I'm not

  495. saying cops or soldiers are bad. That's not the

  496. point of what I'm trying to dig into. The question

  497. is much deeper than that. When your first instinct

  498. is to put yourself first, to protect your power,

  499. to demand your rights, to get even, or to make

  500. sure you come out on top, you need to stop and

  501. ask yourself this. It should be right here. Which

  502. kingdom am I actually living in? Because, The

  503. revolution of Jesus doesn't simply change who's

  504. on top. It changes what we think belongs at the

  505. top in the first place. Is it warm in here? Because

  506. I'm sweating up a storm. Okay. I want to believe

  507. it's just because I'm preaching my guts out.

  508. So once you're done writing that down, give me

  509. the big thumbs up. We'll move on to the second

  510. point. Are we good? All right, let's do it. Second

  511. point, the inversion of the revolution. The inversion

  512. of the revolution. So what did everyone do once

  513. Jesus was arrested? What did it say they did?

  514. Peace, see ya. Like the cartoons when they would

  515. leave really quick and it just showed the outline

  516. of dust. So it says that all of them deserted

  517. him. They all ran and hid. Peter, the man who

  518. just moments ago, hacking a dude's ear off and

  519. said he would never betray Jesus. He would never

  520. go against Jesus. He's pulling a Chuck Norris.

  521. And then this guy turns from that and in a moment

  522. he takes off. Again, I totally identify with

  523. Peter. When the real test came, everyone pieced

  524. out. And then we have this strange little detail

  525. in the text when it says one young man, right?

  526. He had his linens on, they tried to grab him

  527. and he's like, no sir, right? They pull his linens

  528. off and he just like takes off running naked,

  529. right? That's kind of a weird part to put in

  530. there you guys agree Who is that guy? It's mark

  531. many scholars believe that it's mark in this

  532. and there's a reason why mark puts himself in

  533. here because remember who is mark writing through

  534. Because he wasn't there for all these accounts.

  535. So who was mark getting his information from?

  536. Peter So why is now Mark putting himself into

  537. the story? Because he was there, by the way.

  538. He was there for this. So why now? Why is he

  539. all of a sudden putting himself there? That's

  540. what we've got to figure out. Remember how I've

  541. pointed out how much Mark goes back to Genesis

  542. and Exodus? So much. So think about this. What

  543. does nakedness? represent in Genesis you guys

  544. remember Shame right shame Okay, so we've got

  545. nakedness and mark 14 51 through 52. We've got

  546. shame But we also have something else that's

  547. very familiar Where are they at? in a garden

  548. So now We've got some little parallels that Mark

  549. is giving us. So this is Mark's account. And

  550. as I said, many scholars believe this is the

  551. moment where Mark is giving us something from

  552. his own experience. It's as if Mark is saying,

  553. I was there and I was as bad as everybody else.

  554. Everyone failed Jesus and I was so desperate

  555. to save myself that I actually literally left

  556. naked. Like he's telling us how much shame he

  557. felt, because I'm pretty sure I would leave that

  558. part out of the story if I'm like sharing. So

  559. think about the parallels. In Genesis, we have

  560. a garden, there's a test, there's shame, there's

  561. failure. Centuries later, there's another garden,

  562. there's another test, and more failure. Some

  563. failed by waving swords around, others failed

  564. by running away in shame. But there's something

  565. slightly different about this garden experience

  566. than the other. What do you think it is? What's

  567. different? Write this down. Jesus is in the garden

  568. and he is not failing. He is passing the test.

  569. He is righting the wrong that Adam and Eve has

  570. done. And he's righting the wrong of all those

  571. centuries, and he's righting the wrong of all

  572. those who have dispersed. He's righting all those

  573. wrongs. So when everyone else is fleeing the

  574. swords of men, Jesus stands firm. And he is facing

  575. something far worse than the swords of the world.

  576. As we talked about last week, he is facing the

  577. what? What did the cup represent? The wrath of

  578. God. So if you think back to Genesis, when Adam

  579. and Eve were expelled from the garden, they turned

  580. around and saw what keeping them from going back?

  581. Do you remember? A flaming sword, right? An angel

  582. holding a flaming sword. What does that flaming

  583. sword represent? Do you know? I said it last

  584. week. Divine justice. So, just as Adam and Eve

  585. were expelled from the garden and they turned

  586. and saw a flaming sword guarding the way back

  587. into the presence of God. Their sin had separated

  588. them from God and there was no way back unless

  589. someone went under the sword and that's exactly

  590. what Jesus does in the garden. He stands firm

  591. and faces the ultimate sword of divine justice.

  592. He doesn't run, he doesn't fight, he doesn't

  593. call down an army. He willingly submits to the

  594. Father's plan and goes towards the cross for

  595. Adam and Eve, for Mark, for Peter, and for you

  596. and for me. And so that is the inversion of the

  597. revolution. The world says power means protecting

  598. yourself, preserving your position, and making

  599. sure you come out on top. And Jesus shows us

  600. a different kind of power. He gives himself away.

  601. He lays down his life and through his apparent

  602. defeat. He accomplishes the greatest victory

  603. in history And when you realize that you are

  604. made righteous by his grace and not by your achievements

  605. and that you were loved in Jesus Christ It changes

  606. the way you look at power money and status Because

  607. they don't control you anymore I'm closing with

  608. this If you found out tomorrow now, I know many

  609. of you guys are business owners But just imagine

  610. with me for a moment that you were not a business

  611. owner. You work a job work for somebody else

  612. Imagine with me that you find out that tomorrow

  613. you are going to lose your job How do you respond

  614. How do you respond if you found out that tomorrow,

  615. when you come in, somebody sends you an email

  616. and says, hey, just so you know, when you come

  617. in tomorrow, boss is going to be letting you

  618. go? How do you respond? Fear, angry. Would you,

  619. let me ask you this. Would you consider trying

  620. to save your job? What do you think you'd be

  621. willing to do to save your job? Why? Would you

  622. be willing to steal money from the business in

  623. order just to protect your financial future?

  624. I got kids to provide for. Would you do all you

  625. can to protect yourself and your reputation and

  626. do everything to in anger, begin to tell the

  627. boss what's wrong with him, tell him what's wrong

  628. with his business, tell him what's wrong with

  629. all these jerks you work with, right? That would

  630. be Logan Merrick's way. And my wife will tell

  631. you, in my worst ways, I've done that before.

  632. Would you do any of that? Because if you would,

  633. even entertain any of that, then you have to

  634. ask yourself, What revolution, what kingdom am

  635. I a part of? Or would you be able to come to

  636. grips with it pretty quickly because you know

  637. your true treasure and your true identity are

  638. secure in Christ? If you're living for yourself,

  639. spending all your money on yourself, striving

  640. for power, and building your reputation, you

  641. may be having a wonderful party now. But according

  642. to the Bible, that kingdom is going to be inverted.

  643. The values of this world will not be the final

  644. word. The days of that kingdom are numbered,

  645. amen? And that doesn't frighten me at all. Write

  646. this down. It doesn't frighten me to know that

  647. the kingdoms of this world of money, power, politics,

  648. that those days are numbered, it fills me with

  649. joy and anticipation. Because the revolution

  650. Jesus began didn't end when Judas kissed him.

  651. It didn't end when the disciples ran. It didn't

  652. end when Jesus was nailed to the cross, and it

  653. didn't end when he was buried. The revolution

  654. continues because the King who willingly went

  655. under the sword of divine justice rose again

  656. and is seated at the right hand of the Father

  657. at this very moment. And one day, every kingdom

  658. of this world that has ever exalted power, money,

  659. status, pride, and self will come to an end and

  660. the King of Kings will still be standing. And

  661. that's the revolution that you and I belong to.

  662. Let's pray.
