  4. Couple of quick announcements.

  5. One, this Tuesday, Encounter will be the hub that meets on Tuesday.

  6. Sorry.

  7. Oh, sorry.

  8. My bad.

  9. This Tuesday is Encounter at 3702 in Vancouver.

  10. So you'll be sent an invite and please turn up for Encounter on Tuesday.

  11. And that was one announcement.

  12. Two, ah, the rest, it's okay.

  13. James chapter 2 verse 21 to 25.

    James 2:21–25

  14. Let's start at verse 20.

  15. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without works is useless?

  16. Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac

  17. on the altar?

  18. You see that his faith and his actions were working together and his faith was made complete

  19. by what he did.

  20. And the scripture was fulfilled that says Abraham believed God and it was credited to

  21. him as righteousness and he was called God's friend.

  22. You see, a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

  23. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when

  24. she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction.

  25. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

  26. One more time.

  27. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless or faith without

  28. works is useless?

  29. Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac

  30. on the altar?

  31. You see that his faith and his actions were working together and his faith was made complete

  32. by what he did.

  33. And the scripture was fulfilled that says Abraham believed God and it was credited to

  34. him as righteousness and he was called God's friend.

  35. You see, a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

  36. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when

  37. she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction.

  38. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

  39. So guys, we're going to talk about obedience matters.

  40. That's the title for today, obedience matters.

  41. And so the first statement we want to start with is faith apart from works.

  42. Faith apart from works is useless.

  43. Faith apart from works is useless.

  44. Faith apart from works is useless.

  45. Works have to be active alongside faith.

  46. Works have to be active alongside faith.

  47. I know you know this.

  48. Let's see where obedience plays a part.

  49. So the thing is, works are basically obedient actions.

  50. Works are obedient actions.

  51. Works are obedient actions.

  52. That's what works really are.

  53. So God tells us something or God asks us to step out to do something or God gives us a

  54. dream or God gives us a promise or God just speaks into your heart or God gives you the

  55. word from the scriptures and he says, this is what the word says.

  56. And so we begin to trust it, we begin to believe it.

  57. But obedient action is what completes faith.

  58. Obedient action is what shows that you actually believe.

  59. So one of the ways we avoid obedient action is by delaying it or by questioning it multiple

  60. times or by waiting for multiple confirmations or waiting for the right time.

  61. And the right time is usually decided by all the conditions coming together.

  62. That's what happens.

  63. And so obedience matters and faith without obedient action is not faith that is complete,

  64. it's incomplete faith.

  65. Only works or obedient action can show faith.

  66. That's why Paul, sorry, that's why James goes to the extent of starting verse 20 saying,

  67. You foolish man.

  68. As in really?

  69. Duh, are you that dumb?

  70. That's what he's saying.

  71. Did you really think that by not being obedient in your action, you really have faith?

  72. You don't.

  73. That's what he's saying.

  74. James was a straight shooter, right?

  75. That entire book is so in your face.

  76. So the absence of works is the absence of faith or dead faith.

  77. The absence of works, the absence of works and how do we define works?

  78. Go back to this.

  79. The absence of obedient action is basically dead faith.

  80. And I hope this challenges us because many of us think we are walking in faith.

  81. Many of us have walked in faith and have new challenges ahead of us.

  82. We are hesitant, we are delaying.

  83. One of the things about the word obedience, and I've said this many times, obedience is

  84. walking under.

  85. Disobedience is walking around.

  86. The sense of the word in Hebrew is when you're obedient, you're walking under the word.

  87. When you're disobedient, you're walking around the word.

  88. You're not walking under it.

  89. There are ways you can circumvent it or navigate your way around it but not under it.

  90. And therefore, the absence of obedient action is basically dead faith.

  91. Or in other words, just trying to say it in many different ways, whichever way fits, use

  92. it.

  93. And dead faith produces obedience to what God has said and is complete in doing what

  94. God has said.

  95. Any questions before we go on?

  96. Living faith produces obedience to what God has said and is complete in doing what God

  97. has said.

  98. It is also possible to be obedient and yet not do.

  99. Jesus spoke of a parable of two sons and the father asks one of the sons to go and

  100. do something and the son says yes and he doesn't do it and then the other son says no and he

  101. does it.

  102. Well, what if the son who said yes and doesn't do it, is his faith complete?

  103. No, because living faith produces obedience to what God has said but is complete only

  104. in doing what God has said.

  105. That is what fulfills the action.

  106. So what are the things you and I are delaying on?

  107. What are the things that we are waiting for the right conditions?

  108. What are the things we need another three confirmations for?

  109. What are the things where action is held back because you are scared?

  110. And these are real things.

  111. Being afraid is real.

  112. So we can't just dismiss it.

  113. Faith that just walks over fear will only live a day because the fear will come up again.

  114. Faith that walks over fear, as in I'm not afraid, I'm just going to trample over fear.

  115. That's great in a song.

  116. But in reality, I have to deal with the fear.

  117. My fear is the result of not trusting the Father enough in a certain area and that's

  118. where the healing happens.

  119. It's not in trampling over it that it's gone.

  120. And sometimes it may need me to do it again and again but eventually the fear disappears.

  121. So these are valid reasons.

  122. I mean, we don't want to diss what's happening in our lives but we want to diss what's happening

  123. in our lives.

  124. Any questions?

  125. Okay.

  126. Look at Genesis 22.1 because we read about Abraham and James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  127. Now go to Genesis 22.1.

  128. And it says in Genesis 22.1 that sometime later God tested Abraham.

  129. Why did God test Abraham?

  130. What is the reason he tested Abraham?

  131. God tests Abraham in Genesis 22.1.

  132. Why does God test his faith?

  133. Why does God test Abraham's faith?

  134. What is God looking for?

  135. What was God looking for?

  136. Okay, when God tested Abraham, what he was looking for was obedience.

  137. It's one thing to count the stars.

  138. It's another to obey the command to offer his son Isaac.

  139. He was looking for obedience or he was looking for works.

  140. He was looking for obedient action or he was looking for works that would prove Abraham's

  141. faith.

  142. That would prove Abraham's faith.

  143. Faith.

  144. It would prove whether it was empty talk or real.

  145. So know that whenever God gives you a promise, there is the great likelihood of him seeing

  146. you believe the promise, seeing you sing about the promise, seeing you affirm the promise,

  147. seeing you pray the promise.

  148. And after all that, after he's given you signs and wonders and symbols and you have things

  149. in your house that remind you of the promise, you write it with lipstick on your mirror

  150. if you're...

  151. And then after all that, God will come and say, okay, now that we've got this done, let

  152. me test your faith because now I want to see if what you believe is what you will do in

  153. action.

  154. And so God tested Abraham.

  155. He had called Abraham out, shown him the sand on the sea shore, had shown him the stars

  156. in the sky, and he says to him, this is what is going to happen through you, not through

  157. Eliezer but through you.

  158. I will give you a son who would be called the son of promise and through you nations

  159. will be blessed.

  160. But now comes the test.

  161. Now he wants to see if he really believes and what a test.

  162. He's already delayed 25 years.

  163. The guy is 99.

  164. You would think that was enough to prove that Abraham was faithful.

  165. But what has been tested is not whether Abraham can have a son or not.

  166. What is being tested is, I said to you that you will have a son of promise and through

  167. Isaac, I will begin to establish the nation that will produce the seed of the woman that

  168. will crush the serpent's head.

  169. Now let me see if you believe it.

  170. How does he test him?

  171. By saying offer your son Isaac.

  172. There's a reason Abraham is called the father of faith.

  173. There's a reason Abraham is called the friend of God.

  174. This man had the ability to put into action, obedient action.

  175. This is what we are aspiring for.

  176. Abraham did not have the Holy Spirit living in him.

  177. How does a man do that, man?

  178. How do you take a child this age, grow this child to 16 or 17 and then lay this child

  179. on an altar because you know that God will be faithful?

  180. This is your own flesh and blood.

  181. This is no longer Ishmael.

  182. This is not Lot.

  183. Obedient action.

  184. This is the demand that is being placed on us, guys.

  185. And rightfully so.

  186. Then because he shows his faith in obedient action, he is called a friend of God.

  187. He is called a friend of God.

  188. What a title, eh?

  189. It's perhaps the one title we should fight each other for.

  190. Friend of God.

  191. Any questions?

  192. Stagnant works is evidence of stagnant faith.

  193. Stagnant works is evidence of stagnant faith.

  194. And by stagnant, it means it's stopped moving.

  195. It's still.

  196. The waters have been still for a while.

  197. Way maker, promise keeper, light in the darkness.

  198. That is who you are.

  199. And he'll say, great, I'm so glad you say that of me.

  200. But show me your works.

  201. Any questions?

  202. Stagnant works is when works, obedient action is stagnant.

  203. It ain't moving.

  204. It's stopped.

  205. It's not moving anymore.

  206. Or there was a great event in my life in the past which I keep rehashing.

  207. And there's no new evidence of faith works.

  208. Because what should happen is life in God, life in God must lead us, must lead you,

  209. must lead me into impossible circumstances, into impossible circumstances.

  210. Because it's only in impossible circumstances that faith, uncompromising dependence

  211. and obedience will be demanded.

  212. Life in God must lead you into impossible situations.

  213. Why?

  214. Because it's a God who wants to go around the earth, changing the impossible into possible.

  215. He does impossible things.

  216. Hebrews 11 is a chapter of impossibility.

  217. This whole Bible is impossible.

  218. Life in God must lead me into impossible circumstances.

  219. And by impossible circumstances, God is not meaning a job or some money or a house or

  220. a healing only.

  221. Those things are important to him because what matters to you matters to him.

  222. It's important to him.

  223. But that's not what he means when he says impossible circumstances.

  224. And the reason impossible circumstances are important is because it's impossible circumstances

  225. that then place a demand on my faith, place a demand on uncompromising dependence and

  226. places a demand on obedience.

  227. And in obedience, in obedience to action, my faith will be complete.

  228. I was writing this and thinking of something that I've been delaying for the last, at least

  229. the last 10 to 12 days.

  230. I'm thinking to myself, how are you going to navigate through this and not do what God

  231. has told you to do?

  232. I'd have a mind to do it while worship was happening.

  233. Then I thought, no, let's just wait till this afternoon and then I'll go home and complete

  234. what God has said.

  235. I believe it.

  236. I trust him.

  237. I've written it down.

  238. I carry it on my phone.

  239. I go over it.

  240. I went over it this morning, but I'm not doing it because I need another confirmation.

  241. I'm scared of doing it.

  242. Delay helps.

  243. Let's go with the Hebrews 11 way for impossible circumstances.

  244. If God tells you, May, to leave Richmond and move to Mongolia, and he said it very clearly

  245. and you know it in your heart, what are you going to do?

  246. You now have to go and live in a nation that you don't want to go to.

  247. You don't want to leave your friends, and he's asking you to.

  248. And then kicks in faith, uncompromising dependence and obedience.

  249. Let's say that's a going thing.

  250. Let's change that.

  251. Let's say God wants you to break into a certain institution or organization or job front that

  252. you are not qualified for, that you cannot get into without connections.

  253. But he's saying, this is what I've appointed you to.

  254. I want you to end up in City Hall and I want you to stand for elections.

  255. What are you going to do?

  256. Let's say it is to go to a place in Prince George and there's a family there that does not have food

  257. and God expects you to go there and give them a fish and expects a fish to multiply every month.

  258. These are impossible biblical situations.

  259. As I'm saying these, these sound so unreal because they are not part and parcel of our lives.

  260. This is not a demand we place on ourselves.

  261. We'll touch on Elijah now.

  262. Let's say there's a dead boy in an upstairs room and you get a dream saying you're supposed to go to that dead boy

  263. and you're supposed to directly lay down on that boy, mouth to mouth, hand to hand, face to face,

  264. three times and revive him back to life.

  265. Impossible circumstances.

  266. We would not even go here because they're supposed to stay in the Bible.

  267. And yet, as the water proceeds from the throne and goes further,

  268. it's supposed to increase in its depth, not decrease in its depth.

  269. If Acts chapter 2 was knee deep, we must be waist deep now.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  270. These are the impossible biblical circumstances.

  271. We focus on job and little things for our own lives and please don't think God despises that.

  272. He loves it.

  273. He thrills to take care of his kids.

  274. Just like any father does.

  275. But there's something so far beyond your own personal needs being met.

  276. I'm not even talking about healing or anything.

  277. I'm just talking about other impossible circumstances.

  278. The same God who was present here during worship and who you thoroughly enjoyed is the same God who does this.

  279. It is absolutely possible.

  280. That song, Is He Worthy?

  281. Is creation groaning?

  282. Is the darkness growing?

  283. Well then, the conditions are just right for Yahweh.

  284. Can you step back because Satan works for something?

  285. How do you tell the difference between something that is Satan because of what you're doing and not doing

  286. and something that seems to be Satan because of God pulling back for some reason?

  287. So how you find that out is, have you done everything that you have been told to?

  288. That's the easiest way.

  289. Have I finished everything that I have been told to?

  290. That's the easiest way.

  291. Have I finished everything He has told me to?

  292. And after I have finished it, have I gone back and said,

  293. Master, is there anything else?

  294. That's what servants do.

  295. They're given a task, they finish it to the T,

  296. and then they go and ask the Master,

  297. Master, is there anything else that we can do?

  298. And if He says no, then they go and wait till the next morning for the next set of commands.

  299. So it's not enough to finish what we're doing.

  300. It's to finish what we're doing and say,

  301. I have finished my task.

  302. Is there anything else that you want me to do?

  303. That's how you keep stepping into the next of God.

  304. What happens when we engage in obedient action or works?

  305. Obedient action or works when we engage in it?

  306. It activates the omnipotence of God,

  307. omnipotence of God,

  308. into your

  309. importance

  310. and into your

  311. impossible circumstances.

  312. It does both.

  313. Obedient action activates the omnipotence of God

  314. into your impotency

  315. and into your impossible circumstances.

  316. That's what activates it.

  317. The Son of Promise is activated when He's offered on the altar.

  318. And it's a playing out on Mount Moriah

  319. of what will happen to the Son of Promise called Christ

  320. who will be laid on an altar

  321. and is as good as dead

  322. because the dagger is raised above

  323. and then He comes back to life.

  324. And Abraham didn't lay his son there

  325. thinking, I'm going to sacrifice my son.

  326. Abraham laid his son there thinking,

  327. even if I kill him, I will get him back.

  328. But it still is an act of faith

  329. because the Father has to believe

  330. that after He's been sacrificed

  331. because the Father has to believe

  332. that after slaughtering His Son,

  333. His Son will come back to life.

  334. This obedience is not outcome based.

  335. There's outcome oriented obedience

  336. which is, I will obey you and I will show faith

  337. because I need this outcome

  338. and when this outcome happens,

  339. I will trust you and believe you

  340. and praise you.

  341. And then there is

  342. obedience that has nothing to do with outcome.

  343. It is coming under the word.

  344. And saying, I will obey

  345. because it is my pleasure to obey.

  346. Upcome oriented obedience

  347. is highly immature

  348. and if that is who I am as a Christian,

  349. then I'm a highly mature Christian.

  350. I'm like any other religion

  351. that appeases its gods to get its outcome.

  352. I dislike it

  353. when I go to God and say,

  354. but I did this and how come you haven't?

  355. Or when people come to me and say,

  356. I did this but God didn't show up.

  357. Really, why did you do it?

  358. You did it because you wanted to obey Him.

  359. Well then you obeyed Him.

  360. Well done.

  361. When I go and tell Him stuff like that,

  362. but I stood up for you,

  363. I did this, nothing happened.

  364. Thank God it doesn't go.

  365. Let's go to 1 Kings 17.

  366. 1 Kings 17.

  367. 1 Kings 17.

  368. It says there that there was a brook

  369. that Elijah was supposed to sit next to

  370. and he would drink water from the brook,

  371. the brook chariot,

  372. and then ravens would come

  373. and they would feed him bread and meat

  374. in the morning and the evening.

  375. Lunch is overrated.

  376. So if there's any meal you want to skip,

  377. skip lunch.

  378. So these ravens would come in the morning

  379. and ravens would come in the evening

  380. and they would supply him bread and meat

  381. and he had enough water to drink from the brook

  382. when there was famine in the land.

  383. And so he goes to the chariot

  384. but the very place that God tells him to go to

  385. and he obeys and goes to,

  386. dries up.

  387. It's fascinating that his reaction is very different.

  388. When God tells us something,

  389. and this is why I want to go down this route

  390. of obedience matters,

  391. when God tells us something

  392. and the something that we are doing begins to dry up,

  393. what is your reaction usually?

  394. What happens inside you?

  395. He told me this, I did it, nothing happened.

  396. Worse, he told me this, I did it

  397. and it's turning against me now.

  398. What's your reaction?

  399. This man goes, sits by a brook

  400. and the very place that he went to

  401. because God told him to go,

  402. now begins to dry up.

  403. God directed supply, seizes.

  404. God directed supply, seizes.

  405. God told him, in 17 verse 4, he says

  406. I will direct,

  407. ravens, I will direct the supply of water,

  408. I will do it

  409. and you go there and it dries up.

  410. I don't know if it's happened to you

  411. but I will direct the supply of water

  412. and you go there and it dries up.

  413. What has happened to you?

  414. What has happened to me man?

  415. Where I have done something God wants to do

  416. and what he says,

  417. things begin to happen exactly opposite.

  418. What do you do then?

  419. And so then he's sent to the next place.

  420. Where is he sent to?

  421. He's sent to Zarifat.

  422. It's the wrong place to go.

  423. It's Gentile, it's pagan.

  424. And to whom?

  425. To a woman who's a widow, low status.

  426. He's the prophet of Israel.

  427. Even the command to go to that place is so wrong

  428. that he should begin to question it.

  429. But he goes to Zarifat.

  430. Jesus later in Luke chapter 4 talks about it

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  431. and says weren't there widows in Israel

  432. that Elijah could have been sent to?

  433. Yet he was sent to someone

  434. in a Gentile land called Sidon

  435. to a woman in Zarifat.

  436. Weren't there enough women in Israel

  437. who were going through the famine

  438. to whom Elijah needed to be sent?

  439. This is when obedience matters.

  440. It is not yours to question.

  441. What gives you the right to?

  442. What gives me the right to question?

  443. Who do you think you are?

  444. When I'm told something,

  445. I must step to it.

  446. But Jacob what if you're not sure God

  447. is saying it?

  448. Then go and check.

  449. But this desire to be certain

  450. is wrong.

  451. It requires no trust

  452. if certainty is the objective.

  453. If certainty is the objective

  454. it requires no trust.

  455. How do you overcome

  456. the obstacle of certainty?

  457. By looking at Him

  458. who is your Father

  459. and beginning to embrace

  460. His nature and His safety

  461. and His love for you.

  462. He's not a contractual lawyer

  463. who's going to let you down

  464. or pick you up depending on how you do.

  465. He's one who surrounds you

  466. with loving kindness.

  467. Loyal loving kindness

  468. who knows how to pick up the pieces

  469. and put the whole thing back together again.

  470. It's the only way to overcome

  471. uncertainty because

  472. certainty will not be given you

  473. because Jesus is interested

  474. in making you like Him.

  475. And so he goes to Zarephath

  476. and he goes to this woman.

  477. I remember

  478. having

  479. the Lord saying,

  480. I need you to go to the UK

  481. and I'm thinking to myself

  482. I'm going there anyways

  483. two weeks from now

  484. so I'll go.

  485. He says, no I need you to go to the UK now

  486. and I'm thinking to myself

  487. but that's just not reasonable.

  488. But instead of saying

  489. that's not reasonable

  490. I say, so when?

  491. This is third of

  492. I don't remember which month

  493. and the Lord says

  494. I want you to go on the sixth.

  495. I'm thinking that is too close

  496. and so I'm sitting at

  497. this samosa shop in Surrey

  498. and a car pulls up

  499. outside where I'm sitting

  500. like I'm sitting right near the window

  501. and a car pulls up

  502. a Mustang pulls up

  503. and it's got a strange number plate

  504. it says UK06

  505. who has number plates like that?

  506. I have a photograph of that UK06

  507. now I'm thinking to myself

  508. what choice do I have?

  509. So my next question is

  510. Father, why should I go?

  511. There's absolutely no reply

  512. it's like I told you to go

  513. I don't need to give you an explanation

  514. so I jump on a plane

  515. and go to UK

  516. but I don't know what to do

  517. and as I'm landing

  518. the Lord is saying

  519. call your brother-in-law

  520. ask him to come to London

  521. walk the streets of London

  522. he knows I don't like walking

  523. and so now

  524. land in UK

  525. and I'm walking up and down

  526. the streets of London

  527. at a place called

  528. Grovena Square

  529. because that's what he told me to do

  530. so I'm walking up and down

  531. I've never been on a trip like that

  532. but the strange thing is

  533. that kind of obedience

  534. breaks you for things

  535. that you will now experience in the future

  536. I'm walking up and down the streets

  537. and I get a call

  538. I get a call from a man

  539. who calls me and says

  540. I got your number

  541. from someone in Indonesia

  542. next time you're in London

  543. could you please give me a call?

  544. and so

  545. I say I'm in London

  546. he says where?

  547. I say here

  548. and he's at Selfridges

  549. which is not too far away

  550. and he says can I meet you?

  551. I said yes

  552. and he says I've been fasting

  553. for three days

  554. and asking the Lord for answers

  555. and so I meet him

  556. and he's like a Will Smith

  557. from Ghana

  558. he's done movies

  559. and he's in politics

  560. and all this stuff

  561. and he comes and meets me

  562. and we sit together

  563. and I said don't tell me anything

  564. and I begin to prophesy on him

  565. and everything he's asking God

  566. is answered

  567. the next day

  568. I don't know what to do

  569. and so

  570. I wake up

  571. and I ask God

  572. if there's anything to do

  573. and the Lord says

  574. nothing

  575. so I go back to sleep

  576. and then

  577. when I wake up from sleep

  578. the Lord says

  579. I want you to go

  580. to the place where

  581. the Welsh revival was

  582. and I

  583. skipped all those classes at Regent

  584. so I had to

  585. Wikipedia it

  586. and I found that it's

  587. a place called

  588. a church called Moriah

  589. so we drive to Moriah

  590. and the Lord says

  591. just write a letter for a guy

  592. who's going to come to this church

  593. and leave it at the bust

  594. of the guy who started

  595. the Welsh revival

  596. and he'll come and pick it up

  597. that's all we did

  598. third day nothing to do

  599. except

  600. before I left on the flight

  601. the Lord said

  602. there's a girl called Chiara

  603. I want you to go

  604. write something down for Chiara

  605. when you meet Chiara

  606. give her the letter

  607. I'm thinking

  608. how do you go around

  609. London asking

  610. if girls with their names

  611. are Chiara

  612. so that isn't working out

  613. the third day did nothing

  614. just enjoyed myself

  615. the fourth day

  616. it was time to fly home

  617. I had to be here

  618. in church for the service

  619. we used to start in the afternoon

  620. so I'm driving

  621. to

  622. the Heathrow

  623. and

  624. Paul's

  625. sister's husband

  626. runs a church

  627. in Wimbledon

  628. so I thought

  629. let me go stop there

  630. because he asked me

  631. if I could come and preach

  632. so I went there

  633. and

  634. I'm about to preach

  635. and the Lord reminds me

  636. of Chiara

  637. and so

  638. I go and ask Paul

  639. I said is there a Chiara here

  640. and guess who the worship leader is

  641. I go and ask Paul's

  642. brother-in-law

  643. is there a Chiara here

  644. and guess who the worship leader is

  645. a girl called Chiara

  646. not this Chiara

  647. not the Chiara

  648. and so I give her the words

  649. that

  650. God said

  651. and she's like

  652. weeping buckets

  653. because

  654. these are things

  655. she's been asking for

  656. jumped on a plane

  657. and so she came back here

  658. attended church

  659. now here's a question

  660. I want to ask

  661. at the end of this whole story

  662. aren't there enough people

  663. in the UK to do this

  664. does it make any sense

  665. to fly all the way

  666. with the UK

  667. for three days

  668. not knowing what you're supposed to do

  669. spend the kind of money

  670. you're spending

  671. go there

  672. and come back

  673. aren't there 60 million people

  674. in the UK

  675. and out of the 60 million

  676. can we assume

  677. that there are at least

  678. 2 million decent Christians

  679. why can't God get one of them

  680. it does not make sense

  681. but obedience

  682. does not necessarily make sense

  683. it takes you into places

  684. because this is how God works

  685. it's his pleasure

  686. I mean never get to experiences

  687. if you don't dare it

  688. reason and speculative thinking

  689. kicks in

  690. so he goes to Zarifat

  691. and he meets this woman

  692. look what he does

  693. the first thing he does is

  694. he knows his orders from God

  695. you said the brook has dried up

  696. you said the bread

  697. has stopped

  698. because the ravens

  699. won't bring it anymore

  700. so what does he go and do

  701. he starts off by

  702. replacing the brook

  703. he says can I get some water

  704. because he meets his widow

  705. he meets her there

  706. just like I met this guy

  707. from Ghana

  708. who's calling me

  709. saying if you're in London

  710. next time

  711. the timing of God

  712. is perfect if you obey

  713. the timing of God

  714. is perfect if you obey

  715. I don't know how much

  716. this small delay

  717. has cost me

  718. in what I'm supposed to do

  719. the timing of God is perfect

  720. he finds her collecting sticks

  721. and so he asks her

  722. to bring him water

  723. why?

  724. because the chariot

  725. has to be replaced

  726. and then when she

  727. brings him water

  728. instead of stopping at that

  729. and he knows she's poor

  730. she's a widow

  731. what does he ask next

  732. bring me bread

  733. why?

  734. because the ravens

  735. have to be replaced

  736. you have to take God

  737. at face value

  738. and expect that

  739. what he said he will do

  740. he will do

  741. and some of it requires

  742. not waiting

  743. but the audacity to ask

  744. because it's going to

  745. get more audacious

  746. he asks for bread

  747. and the woman supplies bread

  748. but while she's still

  749. supplying bread

  750. here's what she's saying

  751. I just want you to know

  752. that I have very little

  753. flour

  754. that I'm collecting these

  755. sticks so that I can

  756. make bread

  757. and then my son and I

  758. are going to die

  759. because the flour is over

  760. and look at his reaction

  761. his reaction is

  762. yes, but bring me

  763. the bread first

  764. that's the kind

  765. we wouldn't dare

  766. more than that

  767. we wouldn't dare

  768. most of us wouldn't dare

  769. do that

  770. he asks for him

  771. to be fed first

  772. guys always remember

  773. God is proven

  774. God is proven

  775. when, only when

  776. obedience is tested

  777. only when obedience

  778. is tested

  779. God is proven

  780. only when obedience

  781. is tested

  782. otherwise faith

  783. can just stay where it is

  784. God is proven

  785. when obedience

  786. is tested

  787. he asks for

  788. himself to be

  789. fed first

  790. not the woman

  791. not the son

  792. the demand is outrageous

  793. the demand is

  794. self-centered

  795. or at least

  796. that's how it sounds

  797. and yet

  798. the demand has

  799. nothing to do with

  800. Elijah

  801. I was in LA

  802. the last two days

  803. and

  804. there's this guy

  805. Jordan

  806. that I

  807. met before

  808. and

  809. I don't know him

  810. well enough

  811. but I'm sitting with him

  812. and he'll be here

  813. next week

  814. and I told him

  815. I want one year

  816. of your life

  817. give me one

  818. year of your life

  819. where

  820. I'll ask you for

  821. anything

  822. and you'll have to do

  823. if I tell you to go

  824. somewhere

  825. you'll go

  826. if I tell you to stay

  827. somewhere

  828. you'll stay

  829. and you'll come back

  830. to me tomorrow

  831. and you can let me know

  832. this was Friday night

  833. and I said

  834. let me know by Saturday

  835. I met him only

  836. one and a half times

  837. before for about

  838. 20 minutes

  839. and his response was

  840. do I have to wait

  841. for tomorrow

  842. can I say yes now

  843. and look at the

  844. demand I'm making

  845. I do not know him

  846. he does not have a relationship

  847. trust has not been built

  848. but I'm saying

  849. give me one

  850. year of your life

  851. it sounds

  852. egotistic

  853. it sounds

  854. unreasonable

  855. it sounds outrageous

  856. and it sounds all that

  857. and appears all that

  858. but I'm telling you

  859. it is only for his benefit

  860. sometimes

  861. that kind of audacity

  862. is required

  863. to get someone

  864. to where they

  865. need to be

  866. but the question is

  867. when you do that

  868. what do you expect

  869. the reaction to be

  870. will it be good

  871. or will it be bad

  872. will it be trust

  873. can the person trust you

  874. or can the person not

  875. someone asked me

  876. George and Anne

  877. were asking me

  878. the question

  879. two weeks ago

  880. do we listen to people

  881. when we do not know them

  882. if they give us

  883. a word that is directional

  884. a prophetic word

  885. that is directional

  886. what do we do

  887. do we listen or don't

  888. we listen

  889. it's a tough call

  890. there was one girl

  891. that I met

  892. and the Lord is saying

  893. tell her to go

  894. and spend some time

  895. in Mozambique

  896. with Heidi Baker Ministries

  897. there's another couple

  898. that want to

  899. do a tourism

  900. business

  901. to Israel

  902. and the Lord is saying

  903. go to South America

  904. because you will work

  905. among the Incas

  906. and the Mayans

  907. and the civilizations

  908. that came out from them

  909. and you will do really well

  910. what do you do now

  911. when you give a word

  912. like that

  913. and they do not know you

  914. what should be their reaction

  915. and I would say

  916. that if you don't

  917. have a relationship

  918. it is okay

  919. not to jump and do it

  920. God will understand

  921. because trust has to be

  922. developed

  923. but then you meet

  924. some guys like Jordan

  925. who do not know you

  926. but will jump to it

  927. and he says

  928. you do this

  929. and you will eat

  930. for the rest of this family

  931. so let me not beat around the bush

  932. sometimes when I ask you

  933. for stuff

  934. since you have a family

  935. you will ask them

  936. to give you bread

  937. and bread

  938. and bread

  939. and bread

  940. and bread

  941. and bread

  942. and bread

  943. and bread

  944. and bread

  945. since you have

  946. a relationship with me

  947. even if it is outrageous

  948. even if it sounds

  949. completely self-centered

  950. and Jacob

  951. looks like an egotist

  952. who wants to control you

  953. I stand here

  954. and I tell you

  955. without a shadow of a doubt

  956. that the only interest

  957. I have is you

  958. and I suggest

  959. that you give it a shot

  960. because the time will come

  961. and you will have

  962. to ask that of others

  963. and if you haven't done it here

  964. you will not be able

  965. to ask it of others

  966. trust me I know

  967. how it is to be demanded

  968. of things that are outrageous

  969. and I have done it

  970. you can ask Eddie

  971. you can ask Chad

  972. you can ask others

  973. they demand it of me

  974. and I would do it

  975. without thinking

  976. because I knew these

  977. men and women

  978. had everything that God

  979. wanted for me at their heart

  980. because if I have

  981. to jump off a steeple

  982. now to prove

  983. that for you

  984. then I ain't jumping

  985. off a steeple for you

  986. nor should you be

  987. jumping off

  988. a steeple for people

  989. in the future

  990. I'm sorry

  991. this is part of the teaching

  992. I cannot avoid it

  993. to avoid it

  994. is to skirt away

  995. from what might sound

  996. egotistical

  997. and controlling

  998. but I'll be doing

  999. you a disfavor

1000. this is going to be

  1001. a slightly hard message

  1002. she obeys

  1003. she has no relationship

  1004. the demand is outrageous

  1005. it is self centered

  1006. or sound self centered

1007. can be perceived that way

  1008. but she obeys

1009. though she has no relationship

  1010. she doesn't have

1011. any reason to follow him

  1012. she doesn't even believe

  1013. in his God

  1014. and she obeys

1015. she did what was asked

1016. and as soon as she does

  1017. what is asked

  1018. in 1715

  1019. you see that the

  1020. word of the Lord

  1021. came to pass

  1022. and guess what

  1023. Elijah stayed with them

1024. he didn't do this miracle

1025. and get up and leave

1026. the guy stayed with them

1027. and ate and drank with them

  1028. for the next

1029. many many many many many

  1030. many months

  1031. it wasn't a one off thing

  1032. the guy actually

1033. ate and drank with them

  1034. because

1035. the flower would not run out

  1036. true

  1037. they ate bread

  1038. but

  1039. they ate

  1040. actions like this

  1041. guys sets the stage

  1042. for others

  1043. actions like this

1044. set the stage for others

1045. if you don't go down this route

  1046. others will not follow

  1047. guess who follows him

  1048. Elijah

1049. guess who follows him later

  1050. Peter

1051. guess who follows him later

  1052. I'll give you examples

  1053. so now

  1054. something else happens

1055. this gets even more complicated

  1056. the sun has lived

1057. the sun was going to die

1058. and the sun was going to die

1059. the sun was going to die

  1060. now the sun lives

1061. but shortly after he lives

  1062. the sun dies

  1063. the sun dies

1064. and the woman is really upset

1065. there's this turmoil of emotions

1066. did you come here to expose my sin

1067. why have you come here to bring

  1068. a misfortune on me

  1069. shift to 2 Kings 4

1070. and it's the same thing happening

1071. and it's the same thing happening again

  1072. in 2 Kings 4

1073. Elisha is now in place

  1074. and there's a woman

  1075. who has a son

  1076. she didn't have

1077. and because Elisha is favored by the woman

1078. she says what do you want

  1079. and she says

  1080. I don't have a son

  1081. Gehazi tells Elisha

  1082. she doesn't have a son

1083. and so a son is born

  1084. and one day

1085. the son has a headache

  1086. and the son dies

  1087. in both cases

  1088. the women are reacting

  1089. the mothers are reacting

1090. both mothers are saying the same thing

  1091. you said

1092. that you would give us a son

1093. did I come asking for a son

1094. but now that you've given a son

1095. why did you take him away

1096. why are you doing this to me

1097. with Elijah the woman says

1098. why have you come to spot out my sin

1099. couldn't you have left me alone

  1100. this is when

  1101. a word is given

1102. these are the ultimate prophets

  1103. in the Old Testament

  1104. a word is given

1105. and the word does not happen

1106. the way it is supposed to happen

1107. now everything goes into turmoil

  1108. Elijah and Elisha

1109. because they are Old Testament people

1110. themselves begin to blame God

1111. saying why have you done this

1112. to the ones that you sent me to

  1113. because they thought

1114. everything good and everything evil

  1115. comes from Yahweh

1116. so they are blaming God too

1117. what is it that happens to you

1118. when a promise that is given to you

1119. suddenly turns sour and dies

1120. what do you do then

  1121. this reaction

  1122. where is God

  1123. how could you

  1124. you are no prophet

  1125. wrong understanding

  1126. guilt

  1127. sin

  1128. blame

  1129. shame

  1130. betrayal

1131. both the woman and Elijah react

1132. you see the same thing

  1133. happening with Elisha

1134. how do you handle it man

1135. some of you have been waiting

1136. for a while for something

1137. and you just think it was going to happen

1138. and it took a nose dive

1139. what do you do then

  1140. God says

1141. on such and such a day

  1142. I will bless you

1143. and that is the very day

1144. that you find the worst things

  1145. happening in your life

1146. what do you do then

  1147. he promised you

1148. that you would do this

  1149. this and this

1150. and your whole life is in tatters

  1151. because of things

1152. that have happened in between

  1153. what do you do

1154. we got to rise up above this

1155. and we will talk about

1156. how to rise up above this

1157. so that is not how we react

  1158. we definitely don't react

  1159. like these women

  1160. both mothers have promised

  1161. their sons lives

  1162. and both die

1163. and now both are bitter

1164. so many of us turn on God

1165. or turn on the messenger

1166. or turn on the promise

  1167. because what has promised

  1168. is delayed

1169. so many of us turn on God

  1170. turn on the messenger

  1171. I have experienced this

1172. where you give a word

  1173. and it doesn't

  1174. happen in time

  1175. or it doesn't happen

1176. the way you want it

1177. and you turn on the messenger

  1178. this story

  1179. is a narrative

  1180. of how things should

  1181. actually be worked out

  1182. turn on God

  1183. turn on the messenger

1184. or you turn on the promise

  1185. and anytime you turn

1186. on any of these things

  1187. it's like a turtle

  1188. that withdraws its neck

  1189. and everything becomes

  1190. stagnant again

  1191. you know

  1192. I have a story

  1193. you know

  1194. nowadays I get excited

1195. when the brook dries up

1196. and the ravens stop coming

1197. in my mind it is

  1198. oh shucks

  1199. the source that God

1200. is using has dried up

1201. what is he up to next

1202. so that's the first thing

  1203. you need to know

1204. that when it comes to

  1205. things drying up

  1206. the first thing is

  1207. anticipation

  1208. so

  1209. what's happening Abba

  1210. can I look

  1211. up your sleeve

1212. can I look up your sleeve

  1213. that doesn't sound

  1214. very biblical

1215. can I scan the horizon

  1216. Abba Cook

1217. he says in chapter 2

  1218. I have a complaint

  1219. and I'm going to

1220. climb up the watch tower

1221. I'm going to stand there

  1222. and talk to God

  1223. and look for what

  1224. he will say

  1225. to my complaint

  1226. that's what he says

1227. I'm going to stand here

  1228. and wait to see

1229. what he'll say to my complaint

  1230. and then God says

  1231. this word is for

  1232. an appointed time

  1233. it will not tarry

  1234. scan the horizon

  1235. scan the horizon

  1236. when the very things

  1237. he's promised

  1238. are beginning to turn

1239. instead of turning on God

  1240. turning on the messenger

  1241. turning on the promise

  1242. scan the horizon

  1243. there must be

  1244. an anticipation

  1245. and then Elijah

  1246. and Elisha pray

  1247. Elijah and Elisha pray

1248. both of them stretched out

1249. three times on the boy

  1250. no, Elisha seems to

1251. have only done it twice

1252. but guess what Elisha does

  1253. he sends his staff

  1254. which is a symbol

  1255. of his authority

  1256. and his power

1257. and it sends it ahead

  1258. of him

  1259. and he sends it

1260. and it sends it ahead

  1261. of him with Gehazi

  1262. and Gehazi goes

1263. puts it on the boy's face

  1264. nothing happens

  1265. and then Elisha comes

  1266. and lays himself

  1267. on the boy twice

  1268. Eureka

  1269. and then

  1270. someone was sleeping

1271. I just woke them up

  1272. and so

  1273. and so

  1274. sorry

  1275. I just enjoy that

  1276. Elijah and Elisha pray

  1277. Elijah stretches out

1278. on the boy three times

1279. what an odd thing to do

1280. what an odd thing to do guys

1281. I mean it would be so

  1282. so repulsive today

1283. to think of what is being done

  1284. there's a boy lying dead

1285. and here is a grown up man

1286. lying down on top of him

  1287. hand to hand

  1288. mouth to mouth

  1289. face to face

  1290. not once

  1291. not twice

  1292. three times

  1293. sometimes the things

1294. that are asked of you

  1295. are so absurd

1296. that it is best to tell

1297. people to leave the room

  1298. because otherwise

  1299. word will spread

  1300. that you're loco

  1301. and in both cases

1302. Elijah goes into the upper room

1303. and he does this quietly

  1304. Elisha must have heard

  1305. about it from Elijah

1306. or Elisha must have been there

  1307. because Elisha tries

  1308. the same thing

1309. Peter takes a page out of

  1310. both Elijah and Elisha

  1311. and Jesus

1312. when he sends everybody out

  1313. in Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

1314. because he's got to take care

  1315. of Dorcas

  1316. who is again placed

  1317. washed

  1318. in an upper room

  1319. dead

  1320. Paul does something

  1321. very similar

  1322. when he finds

  1323. that Eutychus has fallen

  1324. off the throne

  1325. Eutychus has fallen off

  1326. the balcony

  1327. and he's lying dead

  1328. and the Bible says

  1329. in NIV

  1330. that Paul went

1331. and threw himself on the boy

1332. he threw himself on the boy

  1333. other versions

1334. to make it more palatable say

  1335. he embraced the boy

1336. no he threw himself on the boy

  1337. some of the things

1338. asked of us in obedience

  1339. are really

  1340. meant

1341. to make it so absurd

  1342. that the only one

1343. who can pull it off

  1344. is God

  1345. I read one commentary

  1346. I'm thinking

  1347. I want to delete

  1348. that commentary

  1349. from my phone

  1350. it says

  1351. the boy was actually

  1352. not dead

  1353. and Elijah was trying

  1354. to warm him up

  1355. so he could have

  1356. his life back

  1357. and I'm thinking

  1358. really?

  1359. and if you were

  1360. thinking that

  1361. what I'm thinking

  1362. is that

  1363. it's not a good thing

  1364. because

  1365. it's a very bad thing

  1366. and it's very

  1367. bad for the

  1368. people around them

  1369. so I'm thinking

  1370. there's another thing

  1371. guys

  1372. if you

1373. lie down on a dead person

  1374. you render yourself

  1375. unclean

  1376. it's as unclean

  1377. as you can get

  1378. as a Jew

  1379. Jesus did it

  1380. with the son

1381. of the widow of nine

  1382. but these two prophets

  1383. are rendering

1384. the son of the widow

  1385. of nine

  1386. be quiet

  1387. repulsive

  1388. how far

  1389. would you go

  1390. with your

  1391. obedience?

  1392. there is something

1393. to doing it three times

  1394. and in the bible

  1395. there are

  1396. many instances

  1397. where most of the

  1398. things done in the

  1399. old testament in particular

  1400. were repeated

  1401. three times

  1402. whether it be

  1403. the angels singing

  1404. holy, holy, holy

  1405. three and seven

  1406. were a common repetition

  1407. in the bible

  1408. you were supposed

  1409. to sprinkle blood

  1410. upon things

1411. to cleanse it seven times

  1412. and so

  1413. Elisha says to Nehman

1414. that I want you to dip

  1415. in the river

  1416. seven times

1417. it is because you would

  1418. you would sprinkle blood

  1419. upon this bird

1420. that was going to be sacrificed

  1421. and you would literally

  1422. dip it seven times

1423. and so many of the

  1424. threes and sevens

  1425. are not repeated attempts

  1426. to make something happen

  1427. but they were deliberate

  1428. attempts because

1429. it was supposed to be

  1430. numbers that were

  1431. connected with God

  1432. so it wasn't

  1433. let me try this

  1434. till it works

1435. it was more along the lines

1436. of this is what is

  1437. asked of me

  1438. yeah

1439. there are many threes and sevens

  1440. especially in the

  1441. old testament

  1442. the strange thing is

  1443. much later

  1444. in 2 Kings 8

  1445. this happens in 2 Kings 4

  1446. in 2 Kings 8

  1447. Gehazi

  1448. who is now leprous

  1449. because he's got

  1450. Nehman's disease

1451. is sitting in front of a king

1452. and his woman has been

  1453. away for seven years

  1454. because Elisha says to

  1455. this woman

1456. I need you to go

  1457. out of this land

  1458. and live

  1459. somewhere else

1460. and come back to Israel

1461. and she comes back after

1462. seven years but when she

  1463. comes back

1464. her land has been taken

  1465. the land that she

  1466. used to live in

  1467. has been taken

  1468. and Gehazi

  1469. covered with leprosy

1470. is sitting in front of

  1471. the king

  1472. and he's telling the

  1473. king about this story

1474. of this woman who was

  1475. fed miraculously

  1476. by Elisha

1477. and whose son was raised

  1478. and while they're saying

  1479. guess what happens

  1480. this woman walks into

  1481. the king's presence

1482. saying I have come here

  1483. to demand my land

  1484. and he's saying

1485. but this is the woman

  1486. I'm talking about

  1487. and there's no question

  1488. of checking whether

  1489. she's true or not

  1490. the king says immediately

  1491. take your land back

  1492. the timing of God

  1493. when it comes to

  1494. obedience is so amazing

  1495. that that alone

  1496. is worth pursuing

  1497. obedience and timing

1498. goes so hand in hand

  1499. that's why delay

  1500. doesn't mean that

  1501. you don't get

  1502. what you want

  1503. but timing is critical

  1504. and sometimes it's worth

  1505. waiting for knowing

  1506. the right time

  1507. then jumping ahead

  1508. here's another question

  1509. I had for you

1510. when Elisha sent the staff

1511. and it was laid on

  1512. the boy's face

1513. why didn't the boy revive

  1514. Moses used his staff

1515. things would begin to happen

1516. why is it that the greatest

  1517. the guy who got

1518. the double of what Elijah had

  1519. sent his staff ahead

1520. and he says to Gehazi

1521. go lay the staff on the boy's face

1522. and the boy will revive

1523. and he goes lays the staff

  1524. and nothing happens

  1525. we may not have

  1526. an explanation for it

1527. but what do you do

  1528. when God asks you

  1529. to do something

  1530. and nothing happens

  1531. what do you do

  1532. when God asks you

  1533. to do something

  1534. and nothing happens

1535. guys this is super important

  1536. sometimes

  1537. sometimes

  1538. obedience

1539. is a progression of steps

  1540. it is not

  1541. a one off

1542. because we get stuck with this

  1543. but I obeyed

  1544. nothing happened

1545. well then if you obeyed

  1546. and nothing happened

  1547. go back and say

  1548. father I obeyed

  1549. what's next

  1550. imagine Paul

  1551. in Acts chapter 16

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  1552. God says go

  1553. he goes

  1554. he comes to Phrygia

1555. and the doors are shut

1556. and he is not allowed

  1557. to go forth

1558. what does he do now

  1559. he goes back

  1560. and he checks again

  1561. he goes to Mysia

  1562. it's shut there again

  1563. obedience is a progression

  1564. of steps

  1565. it's not a one off

  1566. we are the ones

  1567. who made obedience

  1568. a one off

1569. and we get so resentful

  1570. when the thing that

1571. God asks us to do

1572. we do and nothing happens

  1573. if nothing happens

  1574. start again

  1575. go and ask God

  1576. father I did this

1577. you told me to do this

  1578. I did this

  1579. your obedience is now

  1580. not outcome oriented

  1581. outcome oriented

  1582. obedience sucks

  1583. it is manipulative

  1584. it is

  1585. it is based on

1586. something that you want to do

  1587. for yourself

1588. not something that you want to do for God

1589. the pleasure of obedience lies

  1590. in pleasing the one

  1591. that you so love

  1592. that's why Jesus said

  1593. if you love me

  1594. you will obey me

  1595. it's not a one off

  1596. it's unquestioning response

  1597. it's unquestioning

  1598. response

  1599. it's unquestioning easy response

  1600. to the assured

  1601. love

  1602. of the father

  1603. and that's why

  1604. of the father

1605. it is not outcome based

1606. and it's not reward based

1607. but it is trust based

  1608. yeah

  1609. yeah

1610. you shared a super cool story about

1611. obedience and all of the cool stuff that happened

1612. can you share a story of obedience

  1613. and nothing happened

  1614. yeah

  1615. yeah

1616. I'll keep it really short

1617. because I've said it before

  1618. I came

  1619. I came

  1620. when was

1621. how long ago was 1989

1622. 1993 was how long ago

  1623. 29 years

  1624. 29 years ago

  1625. almost to the day

1626. it was around this time

  1627. I'd come here for a holiday

1628. I'm supposed to go back to Bahrain

1629. because I was working in Bahrain

  1630. and to the day

  1631. 29 years ago

1632. I was just thinking of it

  1633. while I was driving

1634. the Lord gives me dreams

1635. three nights in a row

1636. saying you're not to go back right now

  1637. I got a job there

  1638. I got parents there

1639. I didn't even take my vacation pay

  1640. I had enough money

1641. just for four weeks that I was here

1642. and he gives me three dreams

1643. saying do not go back

  1644. I don't go back

1645. and I call my boss and tell him

  1646. I can't come

1647. because the Lord is saying no

1648. he eventually he canceled my visa

  1649. but now I got a problem

1650. I can only go back to India

1651. because I can't go back to Bahrain

1652. and that's when my papers

1653. that I had put in for immigration to Bahrain

  1654. to Canada came through

1655. but now I'm supposed to go to the US Embassy

1656. to get my interview sorted out

1657. and the Lord said I'll bring you to this land

  1658. so go

  1659. I go once

  1660. nothing happens

  1661. I go twice

  1662. nothing happens

  1663. I go a third time

  1664. nothing happens

  1665. a fourth time

  1666. nothing happens

  1667. long story short

  1668. every time I went

1669. they would not let me go across to Seattle

1670. to get a six minute interview done

1671. so I could come back

1672. every time I would go back to God

1673. and say what do you want me to do

  1674. go back

  1675. I'd go back

  1676. second time

  1677. go back

  1678. third time

  1679. go back

  1680. fourth time

  1681. I didn't want to go back

1682. the fourth time I'm sitting there

1683. not wanting to go back

1684. and instead I go to the border

1685. thinking those guys will allow me

1686. because I have an interview

  1687. they said no

1688. even a Bill Clinton says yes

  1689. we won't allow you

  1690. so I come back

  1691. now I'm done

1692. a lawyer advises me to go back to India

1693. or sneak in through Mexico

  1694. honest truth

  1695. but here's the thing

1696. I had absolute word from God saying

1697. I will bring you here

1698. if you don't have that absolute word

  1699. then you're second guessing

1700. but when you have an absolute word

1701. then the fifth time I didn't want to go back

  1702. I'm sitting in my

1703. sitting and the Lord says

1704. go back in the way in which you came

1705. and so we go back a fifth time

1706. and the lady was quite upset with me by now

1707. and said why are you back

  1708. and I said

  1709. I didn't plan to come back

1710. lawyers told me not to come back

  1711. but I'm here because

1712. this morning I was reading the word

1713. and the word said come back

1714. and so here I am

1715. and then after a whole lot of time was over

1716. she calls me up and she's weeping

  1717. and she's saying

1718. I don't have the power to stop you

1719. she's the vice consul of the US embassy

1720. I do not have the power to stop you

1721. your God has set me up

1722. there's nothing I can do to prevent you

1723. from going into the United States

1724. and she's weeping as she stamps

1725. what needs to be stamped and given

  1726. five times

  1727. you keep going back

  1728. why?

1729. because obedience is not a step

1730. obedience is a progression of steps

1731. and when obedience is a progression of steps

1732. the world begins to watch

  1733. because something is afoot

1734. and they will see the glory of God

1735. imagine what would have happened to Moses

1736. if after the first time he goes

1737. and asks Pharaoh to let his people go

  1738. nothing happens

  1739. what did Pharaoh do?

  1740. he made it worse

  1741. he said well then

1742. let me show you how to make bricks without straw

  1743. he makes it harder

1744. people begin to rebel against Moses

1745. saying why did you even do this?

  1746. and yet

1747. there's an entire world now

1748. that knows the story of Exodus

1749. that story is only triumphed

1750. by Jesus rising from the dead

1751. there's nothing else that can trump that story

1752. this is why in Psalm 40 it says

1753. many will see and many will fear

1754. and put their trust in the Lord

1755. I waited patiently for the Lord

  1756. he heard my cry

1757. he lifted me up from the miry clay

1758. he set my feet on the rock to stay

1759. now many will see and many will fear

1760. and put their trust in the Lord

  1761. when you have metal

  1762. M-E-T-T-L-E

1763. to stand in progressive steps of obedience

1764. the world begins to watch

1765. because they see you standing there

1766. and they know that either

1767. you will shame your God

1768. or your God will come in such blazing glory

1769. that they will not be able to stay neutral

1770. they will have to reject him

1771. or they will have to accept him

  1772. I said this before

  1773. I said this before

1774. when my Muslim neighbor came and said

1775. and it was such agony in his voice

  1776. when he said

1777. Joan and Ruth have met the guy

1778. remember the Bashir that used to come for the

1779. he came and said to me

  1780. Jacob tell me something

1781. how does your God speak

  1782. because mine does not

1783. that is the kind of thing we are talking about

1784. when it's progressive steps of obedience

1785. this is what we are called to guys

1786. then you have the opposite

  1787. in King Saul

1788. his was outcome oriented obedience

1789. he is told not to offer a sacrifice

  1790. pressure grows

  1791. he offers a sacrifice

1792. and then you have that sad verse

  1793. in 1 Samuel 15

    1 Samuel 15:22

  1794. verse 22 or thereabouts

1795. to obey is better than

  1796. sacrifice

  1797. and submission

  1798. and submission

  1799. and submission

  1800. and submission

  1801. is better

1802. than the fat of rams

1803. last thing I want to say is in obedience

  1804. in God's commands

  1805. details are often withheld

1806. in God's commands to you

1807. details will often be withheld

1808. in God's commands to you

1809. details will often be withheld

1810. details will often be withheld

1811. please get used to it

1812. in God's commands to you

  1813. details

  1814. will often be withheld

1815. all you will get is

  1816. trust me

1817. that's all you will get

  1818. trust me

  1819. concerns of

  1820. go where

  1821. how long for

  1822. with whom

  1823. what for

  1824. what about this

  1825. or that

  1826. these all will go

  1827. unanswered often

1828. if you are in this church

  1829. you will be

1830. if you are in this church expect this

1831. if you are in this church expect this

1832. if this is not your cup of tea start drinking

1833. another way to rephrase Jehovah Jireh

1834. God will provide is what we normally say Jehovah Jireh

1835. but another way to look at it is

  1836. God will provide

  1837. an outcome

  1838. even though I don't see it

  1839. even though

  1840. I don't see the plan

1841. that's what Jehovah Jireh looks like

1842. because at the end of the day guys

  1843. obedience is my responsibility

  1844. obedience is my responsibility

  1845. the outcome is god's

1846. so when he changes his direction

1847. when he changes his direction

1848. don't scramble to maintain direction

1849. when he changes his direction

1850. don't scramble to maintain direction

1851. when he changes his vision

1852. dont scramble to maintain vision

1853. because you'll miss the story he's writing.

1854. Because you'll miss the story he's writing. Just be aware of that. One of the

1855. things God wants to do with this church is make it so highly flexible that we'll

1856. have to change our name from Ax 29 to Acrobat 29 or something.

1857. Yeah, highly flexible. Look at Job 37-22. Learn it. Let's read it from both the NIV

1858. and the message. Job 27 and not 32. Job 27-12. I love this verse. I want to live

1859. this verse. I don't want to be anything else but this verse for

1860. his sake. Job 37-12. Let's read it from the NIV first, starting at verse 11.

1861. Job 37, verse 11 onwards. 11-13. Let's read it from the NIV first. This is what

    Job 37:11

1862. God's desire is for us as a church, for each of us individually. He would love

1863. this. His eyes scan the earth to and fro, looking for those that can be loyal on

1864. his behalf so that he can be steadfast in his attitude towards us. Look at what

1865. it says. Job 37, verse 11. He loads the clouds with moisture, meaning you're the

    Job 37:11

1866. cloud. He loads the clouds with moisture. He scatters his lightning through them.

1867. At his direction, they swirl around over the face of the whole earth to do

1868. whatever he commands them. He brings the clouds to punish people or to water

1869. people, water his earth and show his love. Go to the message. It says it really

1870. well in the message too. Job 37, verse 11-13. Yes, it's God who fills clouds

    Job 37:11–13

1871. with rainwater and he hurls lightning from them every which way. Listen to the

1872. next verse. He puts them through their paces, first this way, then that, and

1873. commands them to do what he says all over the world, whether for discipline or

1874. grace or extravagant love. He makes sure they make their mark. Beautifully, this is

1875. what this church must become. Where it'll be like at the drop of a hat. Put them

1876. through paces. Send them here, send them that. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes

1877. it doesn't. Sometimes it's Zarephath, sometimes it's Bethlehem. But no questions

1878. asked. You go. Why? So that he can make his mark by using you for discipline or for

1879. extravagant love, for whatever he wants to. Highly flexible people. Yeah? So if

1880. this head is in the way, cut it off and replace it with a cabbage and you'll do

1881. much better. On that note, let us end.
