  1. Okay.

  2. Guys, so we continue with the topic we were dealing with, the Spirit and the people of

  3. God.

  4. This is the third part.

  5. And so today, based on the fact that it is Good Friday, what do you say?

  6. Do you say Good Friday to you?

  7. No.

  8. We were debating that on the way in.

  9. Is it Blessed Friday to you or Good Friday to you?

  10. So given that it was Good Friday, I want to chip away.

  11. I want to chip away at something that the cross brings a sledgehammer to.

  12. At something that the cross brings a sledgehammer to.

  13. And what does the cross bring a sledgehammer to?

  14. The cross brings a sledgehammer to self-preservation.

  15. So let's try and chip away at it.

  16. Because I know we are supposed to use the same thing that happened on the cross in our

  17. lives.

  18. It's so ingrained that it's sometimes hard to destroy in one shot, but at least we can

  19. begin the process if we haven't already started.

  20. So I want to chip away at something that the cross brings a sledgehammer to.

  21. The cross does bring a sledgehammer to self-preservation.

  22. Because Eugene Peterson used to say that most of us as humans and as believers have an exoskeleton.

  23. That exoskeleton is an outer covering of protection of self-preservation.

  24. And because we have that exoskeleton, the endoskeleton of Christ does not grow.

  25. That's how he put it.

  26. He said, whenever we have an exoskeleton, as in a shell that covers us from the outside,

  27. it prevents any internal growth.

  28. That's why mollusks and clams, they always remain the same.

  29. You can take them when they are small, you can eat them at dinner.

  30. They always have that bulbous little mass that you see inside the shell.

  31. Nothing grows inside because the outside is covered.

  32. And he said once the exoskeleton is removed, then the endoskeleton begins to grow.

  33. That's why humans don't have an outer covering.

  34. That's why they are so fragile when they are born.

  35. But the intent is can things begin to grow inside?

  36. And so one of the exoskeletons that we have, or one or two of them, is protection and self-preservation.

  37. Until I abandon the exoskeleton or the outer covering of protection and self-preservation

  38. and trust the one who counts all my bones and knows how to preserve them, and knows

  39. how to preserve them, the endoskeleton of Christ cannot be formed in me, cannot be fully

  40. formed in me.

  41. Cannot.

  42. And that's one of God's desires, right?

  43. That Christ be fully formed in you.

  44. It's odd, eh, but it was prophesied that not one of his bones will be broken.

  45. And it was true of Christ.

  46. Not one of his bones was broken.

  47. They beat him.

  48. They beat him badly.

  49. But none of his bones were broken.

  50. And when it came time for the soldiers to be sent to break the legs of those that hung

  51. on the cross, they broke the legs of the guys to the right and to the left of him.

  52. But by the time they got to Christ, he was already dead.

  53. And so they did not break his legs.

  54. None of his bones were broken.

  55. And so, until I abandon the exoskeleton of protection and self-preservation and trust

  56. the one who counts all my bones and knows how to preserve them, as in, until I trust

  57. him with protection and preservation, the endoskeleton of Christ cannot be fully formed.

  58. And so, if you were to define self-preservation, let's just call it SP for now, self-preservation

  59. is about doing what we can to be sure we remain safe.

  60. Doing what we can to be sure we remain safe.

  61. Safe, or in other words, secure.

  62. Now, it's not to say that one should not be safe or one should not be secure.

  63. What happens is it becomes a primary value in our lives.

  64. So God is not saying abandon safety, abandon security, be insecure, be unsafe.

  65. That's not how he wants us to live.

  66. That's why he gives us parents.

  67. That's why he gives us protection.

  68. That's why he gives us the law.

  69. But the intent is, what happens to us as humans is this becomes primary.

  70. This becomes really important.

  71. And that he does not want, because it prevents him from being fully formed and it prevents

  72. him from advancing the kingdom through us, because everything in the kingdom is unpredictable

  73. and quite insecure and unsafe.

  74. So self-preservation is doing what we can to be sure we remain safe and secure.

  75. And so when we operate in self-preservation mode, when we are operating in self-preservation

  76. mode, we are playing it, on one hand we are playing it safe, we are playing it safe.

  77. And on the other hand, we show where our treasure is.

  78. Self-preservation just means that my treasure is myself.

  79. I'm the treasure.

  80. Where my treasure is there, my heart will be also.

  81. And I mean, one of the places where you see this is in Matthew 25, where there was a servant

  82. who received one talent, and what did he do?

  83. He went into self-preservation mode, where his thing was, can I secure what I have and

  84. make sure I don't lose it?

  85. And that's usually how most of us live.

  86. Can I secure what I have so that I don't lose it?

  87. I'll trade it once I'm guaranteed that if I trade, I'll get more.

  88. But I will not trade it.

  89. I'll keep it safe and secure if I'm not guaranteed an outcome.

  90. So self-preservation mode is when, one, I play it safe, two, I become the treasure,

  91. and therefore my heart is towards keeping the treasure intact.

  92. Any questions on that before we go on?

  93. So usually, if you were to draw concentric circles and decide what's at the center, what's

  94. next, what's next, what's next, I'd be hard-pressed to say that God is at the center of my life.

  95. I'd say, I'm usually at the center of my life.

  96. And then God comes second, coffee, and then the Canucks.

  97. Or something like that.

  98. But it's not usually me at the center.

  99. It's not usually God at the center.

  100. God and I have to sometimes tussle for the center because the moment self-preservation

  101. kicks in, it's hard to preserve myself and God together at the center.

  102. Because he doesn't share space like that.

  103. Any questions?

  104. So it's a struggle that must be overcome.

  105. We wrestle through it.

  106. And when we find God displaced from the center by us, when the idol at the center is you,

  107. we have to displace it and might have to do it multiple times, but so what?

  108. Eventually he wins.

  109. That's your desire.

  110. The strange thing is we all desire that God be at the center.

  111. So that's established.

  112. That's a huge start, eh?

  113. Because the world cannot even desire that.

  114. The world can't even desire it.

  115. We can have that passionate desire which then allows us to do what is required.

  116. On the cross, you see someone, and this is why the cross takes a sledgehammer to self-preservation,

  117. because everything about the cross is opposed to self-preservation.

  118. Everything about the cross.

  119. There's nothing that happens that day on the cross that has anything to do with preserving

  120. self.

  121. And so it goes against the grain of Christianity to preserve self.

  122. Which is, at every time someone decides not to preserve self, they become potent for the

  123. kingdom.

  124. The prosperity gospel, in a sense, is preserving of self.

  125. And once you preserve self, you can decide what you do with your stability, security,

  126. and your gain.

  127. And so, on the cross, you see someone not seeking their own gain.

  128. You see someone.

  129. So the cross is diametrically opposed to self-preservation.

  130. And you see someone not seeking their gain.

  131. You see someone who instead seeks the well-being of others.

  132. So the absence of self-preservation must result in the benefit of others.

  133. The absence of self-preservation must result in the benefit of others.

  134. Indifference is not the remedy to a lack of self-preservation.

  135. Someone can say, I don't care.

  136. It doesn't matter how I live.

  137. That's indifference.

  138. The thing with self-preservation is, once the cross attacks it, it goes the same route

  139. that Jesus took.

  140. On one hand, he doesn't seek his gain.

  141. On the other hand, he seeks the well-being of others.

  142. When you read Philippians 2, 6-9, Philippians 2, 6-9, that's the anti-self-preservation

  143. scripture.

  144. Philippians 2, 6-9.

  145. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.

  146. Instead he gave up his divine privileges.

  147. In giving up his divine privileges, he gives up heaven, he gives up glory, he gives up

  148. stability, he gives up security, he gives up being God.

  149. Instead he gave up his divine privileges, he took the humble position of a slave and

  150. was born as a human being.

  151. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's

  152. death on a cross.

  153. Therefore God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above

  154. all other names.

  155. So Philippians 2, 6-9 is about the end of self-preservation.

  156. My hope is that at the end of this teaching, that we will feel this nudge to it in different

  157. areas of our life and self-preservation.

  158. It looks different for each of us, but there are things that we hold on to that we can't

  159. let go because in it is our security, in it is our stability, and it's different for different

  160. people at different levels and in different things too.

  161. The father and son underwent excruciating suffering.

  162. We sometimes think the suffering was only that of the son, but the father and son went

  163. through excruciating suffering and they went through our rejection of them in order to

  164. save us.

  165. So in giving up his son, the father is giving himself to us.

  166. In giving up his son, it's the only way.

  167. The only way that the father could give himself to me is by giving up his son.

  168. There's no other way.

  169. A holy God, that's the problem.

  170. If this God was not holy, everything could be settled so easily.

  171. That's why most other gods and most other religions can do whatever they want and then

  172. give blessings or take away blessings because none of them ever, ever, you don't hear this,

  173. see?

  174. You don't hear this from any other religion.

  175. No other religion, no other God in any other religion says, I am holy.

  176. No one says that.

  177. It's crazy.

  178. Not only does our God say, I am who I am, he then goes on to say, I am holy and that

  179. becomes a problem.

  180. So without a father giving us his son, he cannot give himself to us.

  181. And therefore he goes through excruciating suffering to give his son so that he can give

  182. himself to me.

  183. And so in a sense, not in a sense, in an absolute sense, God turns his back on his self-preservation.

  184. God turns his back on his self-preservation to love us.

  185. Why is it then that we think that as believers, we can do, become, identify with him without

  186. chipping away at the self-preservation that is so a mark of our culture?

  187. Guys, we like finding our identity in Christ.

  188. Everyone loves that.

  189. But we're not too keen on identifying with Christ.

  190. That's a whole different ballgame.

  191. Finding one's identity in Christ is great.

  192. I want to find my identity in Christ.

  193. That's great.

  194. But identifying with Christ?

  195. Strangely enough, it's in identifying with Christ that I find my identity in Christ.

  196. So while self-preservation is human nature, God calls me to lose my life for his agenda

  197. and interests.

  198. He's very direct.

  199. He expects us to gradually climb that curve, but he gives us the horizon right off the

  200. bat.

  201. And so his thing is, yes, I understand that self-preservation is your human, is your fallen

  202. human nature.

  203. Yes, I understand that.

  204. But here's what I'm calling you to.

  205. I'm calling you to lose your life.

  206. I'm calling you to lose your life for my agenda and my interests.

  207. To lose your security, to lose your safety for my agenda and my interests.

  208. Any questions?

  209. I love that he's an extreme God.

  210. This is demand.

  211. But anything he asks of us is already something that the Godhead has done.

  212. The Godhead will never ask anything of us that they haven't already done.

  213. So Aaron, lose your life for his agenda and interests.

  214. Tomo, lose your life for his agenda and interests.

  215. Zeru, lose your life for his agenda and interests.

  216. Pradesh, lose your life for his agenda and interests.

  217. That's the end of self-preservation.

  218. Self-preservation disguises itself as individuality.

  219. I'm just a different individual.

  220. My individuality is important.

  221. These are the things that the world feeds on.

  222. The world just builds up.

  223. Everything that the world presently builds up is exactly diametrically opposite to what

  224. the cross portrays.

  225. So we give high value to individuality.

  226. But at the end of the day, the characteristics of individuality are again, self-preservation,

  227. independence, assertiveness.

  228. The very things that the world wants us to increase in.

  229. And these three things actually hinder my spiritual life.

  230. They hinder my spiritual life.

  231. And worse, it stifles my God-given personality.

  232. Stifles my God-given personality.

  233. There's a personality that you and I have that has been shaped by the world.

  234. And that can be pretty messed up.

  235. But then there is a personality that has been given us by God, shaped by him, that every

  236. so often believers display.

  237. Where you can say that person has such a sweet spirit, or that person is so kind, or that

  238. person has such generosity, or that person has, you see different aspects of people.

  239. And you can look around this room and you can pick.

  240. And you'll find it in everybody, whether you know them a lot or know them a little, you'll

  241. find that there are certain aspects of God that have been woven into your personality.

  242. Even without knowing each other much, you can identify it.

  243. Now that gets stifled when these three things are in operation.

  244. Independence, assertiveness, self-preservation.

  245. Those are like straight jackets that prevent God-given personality from even expressing

  246. itself.

  247. What do we tell our children when they start getting too generous and give all their toys

  248. away?

  249. Why is it that we take away all the new toys that they get for Christmas and for birthday

  250. and keep them on top of a cupboard that they can't reach till three years from now when

  251. Elmo is no longer popular?

  252. Instead of preserving the things of life, instead of preserving, instead of preserving

  253. the things of life, instead of preserving things of life, sometimes when we say self-preservation

  254. of life, we have to think of things of life.

  255. Instead of preserving the things of life, can I seek, can I seek to preserve and further

  256. God's glory and kingdom?

  257. God's glory and kingdom while trusting God to preserve my life.

  258. This is the story of most of the heroes of the Bible.

  259. And we must understand that you cannot preserve the things of life and preserve God's glory

  260. and kingdom.

  261. They cannot be done together.

  262. You have to choose.

  263. You always have to choose.

  264. We choose.

  265. I'm not saying we are not down this path.

  266. I'm just saying sledgehammer blows are not part of our equation.

  267. We tip away at it.

  268. And you're right, I started off saying let's tip away at it some more.

  269. But the cross delivers sledgehammer blows to this.

  270. And so it's not like we are not down this path.

  271. All of us are down this path.

  272. But I'm saying it's just not enough to tip away at it slowly.

  273. So, instead of preserving the things of life, and everyone here preserves something or the

  274. other, right?

  275. We're preserving.

  276. Instead of preserving things of life, can I seek to preserve and further God's glory

  277. and kingdom?

  278. And both are incompatible.

  279. You cannot hold one and do the other.

  280. You have to let go of one to have the other.

  281. And if you do, can you also trust God to preserve your life?

  282. This is basically what Jesus says when he says, those that hold on to things will lose

  283. them.

  284. Those that will sacrifice them will gain them.

  285. We just take it as, ah, give my life away and he'll give me eternal life.

  286. And if I don't give my life away, I'll lose it anyways.

  287. He wasn't talking about salvation.

  288. He was talking about all of life.

  289. And there are, I mean, may the Spirit of God just begin to touch different things in your

  290. life that are so strong that to give it away, not to give it away, to release it would be

  291. so difficult.

  292. Sometimes it's not money.

  293. Do not focus only on money.

  294. There are other things too.

  295. We may touch on some of them.

  296. But the cross is supposed to bring a sledgehammer blow to these things because everything about

  297. the cross is supposed to self-preservation.

  298. A willingness to sacrifice, a willingness to sacrifice, actually Jesus sacrificed all,

  299. so the operative word really is all.

  300. That's such a stretch for us, eh?

  301. A willingness to sacrifice all.

  302. What does all look like?

  303. Let's touch on a few things that all looks like.

  304. Money and life are what we usually think of.

  305. And life probably won't be demanded of you.

  306. Money maybe.

  307. But there are other things too.

  308. Your rights.

  309. Loyalty to different things.

  310. Tradition, culture, family, friends.

  311. Loyalty.

  312. Directions that you have received from people before or even directions that you received

  313. from God maybe a year ago that we are holding on to.

  314. Nothing wrong with it, but what if God is changing something?

  315. Principles.

  316. Reason.

  317. Conscience.

  318. Freedom.

  319. Whenever these things which are good things compete with obedience or soul allegiance

  320. to Christ, they actually become monsters.

  321. This is what happened to the Jews.

  322. The Torah, which is meant to be something that showed them God became a monster and

  323. began to literally have them crucify the one who wrote the commandments.

  324. Here's a terrible truth.

  325. I cannot follow Christ freely if my heart is set on myself, my family, money, work.

  326. Possessions.

  327. These won't allow me to.

  328. I have to choose.

  329. I cannot follow Christ freely.

  330. I can follow Christ, but not freely.

  331. I cannot follow Christ freely.

  332. I can follow Christ.

  333. It's not that we can't follow Christ with all these things because 95, 98 percent of

  334. Christians follow Christ with these things.

  335. God is looking for that 2 percent because then he has them at his disposal to do as

  336. he wills.

  337. But you cannot follow Christ freely if my heart is set on myself, my family, money,

  338. work or possessions.

  339. Those things won't allow me to.

  340. It doesn't mean I have to let them go.

  341. It just means the priority should be super clear.

  342. There should never be a struggle.

  343. There shouldn't be a struggle.

  344. And there are enough scriptures to show this.

  345. There's Matthew 14, 26.

  346. There's Luke 9, 52 to 59.

  347. There's Mark 10, verse 28 to 30.

    Mark 10:28–30

  348. Write them down.

  349. You can check them later.

  350. Matthew 14, 26.

  351. Luke 9, 52 to 58.

  352. Mark 10, 28 to 30.

  353. The disciples come to him and he says this again and again and again in different

  354. gospels saying, it's not possible.

  355. He actually uses harsher words than I'm using.

  356. He says, you're not even worthy to be my disciples.

  357. Those are the words he uses.

  358. I'm softening it because to say that sounds a little too harsh.

  359. What is he trying to do here?

  360. He's trying to bring an end to self-preservation because in bringing an end to

  361. self-preservation, he suddenly has the right to ask you the question,

  362. do you love me more than these?

  363. And if you do, well then, feed my sheep.

  364. That's what he's bringing Peter to a week from now,

  365. or three days from now.

  366. He asks Peter the same thing.

  367. Because this is the case, work together on it.

  368. We have to work on it together as a family,

  369. as couples,

  370. as a family,

  371. as a church.

  372. Because if you can work on it together, then everybody gets to start the journey

  373. together.

  374. Otherwise you have one who begins to get it and runs while the other one is left

  375. behind and then that brings in conflict.

  376. But what if you can work this together as a couple?

  377. It may not happen in a day.

  378. It may take three years, but in three years, imagine the freedom you arrive at

  379. and imagine the freedom God has.

  380. When you want to get married to someone, don't look at whether they can fit into

  381. Acts 29 or whether they know as much as you know.

  382. It is whether they are willing to put an end to self-preservation.

  383. You find someone like that, lock them up in a room and get married.

  384. Lock them up in a room and get married.

  385. Yeah, just call me, I'll quickly...

  386. I'll get calls tomorrow, Jacob, I've got someone locked up.

  387. I'll say, I'll get there before 9-1-1 does.

  388. I don't know who said these lines, but they're brilliant lines.

  389. Self-preservation is the greatest enemy of boldness.

  390. Self-preservation is the greatest enemy of boldness.

  391. The reason we are not bold, the reason we don't say anything

  392. is usually because of self-preservation.

  393. The strange thing is whenever you preserve yourself,

  394. you come up with decent reasons and excuses to have taken that stance.

  395. We always come up with good reasons for, and that was the wise thing to do.

  396. Self-preservation is the greatest enemy of boldness.

  397. It means then that absolute obedience,

  398. absolute obedience to self-preservation,

  399. absolute obedience to your instinct of self-preservation

  400. is actually cowardice.

  401. Absolute obedience to your instinct of self-preservation

  402. is actually cowardice, being a coward.

  403. So on one hand, self-preservation opposes boldness.

  404. On the other hand, because we so capitulate to self-preservation,

  405. we are actually cowards.

  406. Very hard to work with cowards, right, for God?

  407. Which is why then he would have to go and say to Joshua, to Gideon,

  408. be of good courage, be strong, do not be afraid.

  409. Self-preservation takes the route of waiting, not acting.

  410. So many times we do this, I do this,

  411. where I'm so sure it's God who's speaking,

  412. but I'm so scared because if I take that step,

  413. I'm going to lose something that's important to me,

  414. or I have to give away something that's important to me.

  415. And so I wait, I do not act.

  416. I'm hoping that by waiting I can avert the risk.

  417. The greater the cause, the greater the risk, guys.

  418. The greater the cause, the greater the risk.

  419. And the greater the risk,

  420. the greater the urge of self-preservation.

  421. The greater the cause, the greater the risk,

  422. the greater the urge of self-preservation.

  423. We take the route of waiting instead of acting.

  424. That's what was happening in the garden

  425. when Tune was singing that song,

  426. Do Not Forget Get Seemly, that's what was happening.

  427. That's what was happening.

  428. I mean, Peter had sworn he would die with Jesus,

  429. but at that particular moment,

  430. his feet were fleeing, his heart was failing,

  431. and he had a distrust of God to preserve him.

  432. Given the weight and the horror of the circumstances,

  433. the disciples fled.

  434. Here are some other nasty things about self-preservation.

  435. It seeks to predict, this is so important,

  436. it seeks to predict the safest,

  437. most favorable, most in control outcome.

  438. Self-preservation,

  439. it seeks to predict the safest, most favorable,

  440. most in control outcome,

  441. the one that keeps us most comfortable.

  442. The one that keeps us most comfortable.

  443. The one that keeps us most comfortable.

  444. And it helps avoid doing right.

  445. It helps avoid doing right

  446. if doing right will bring

  447. pain, loss,

  448. if it brings pain, loss, or hardship.

  449. It is in this, in human nature.

  450. The only way to overcome this is when you love somebody,

  451. that's when it's overcoming.

  452. It's always overcome when you love somebody.

  453. Self-preservation goes out of the window

  454. when you love somebody.

  455. When spouses love each other,

  456. when parents love their children,

  457. when someone loves somebody who they don't know,

  458. self-preservation goes out of the window.

  459. This is why self-preservation could not stand a chance

  460. with Christ, because Christ loved.

  461. And Christ loves his enemies,

  462. and therefore self-preservation must go.

  463. Otherwise, self-preservation will always seek to predict

  464. the safest, most favorable, most in control option

  465. that keeps me most comfortable,

  466. and that way it helps me avoid doing right.

  467. If that doing right brings me pain or loss or hardship,

  468. then self-preservation kicks in, unless I love.

  469. And once I love, it goes out of the window.

  470. I pray, God, that for some of us,

  471. this will be so convicting

  472. by the sheer power of the Spirit of God

  473. that in some area we will stop.

  474. We will stop.

  475. So for some of us, may there be hammer blows.

  476. For others, may the chipping stop,

  477. but may no one escape.

  478. Yeah, I pray, God, that we don't resist the Spirit of God.

  479. The sin of self-preservation is the sin of self-preservation.

  480. The sin of self-preservation.

  481. No, we begin to justify,

  482. we begin to justify that Jesus would not ask us

  483. to give a month's salary away

  484. or would not ask us to lose our job

  485. or would not ask us to do anything that would risk our lives.

  486. So,

  487. when I come up with excuses to preserve myself,

  488. you spot it so easily.

  489. The ones that don't spot the excuses

  490. are the ones that are making them.

  491. When you ask me something and I come up with an excuse

  492. saying I have this and that,

  493. you can immediately spot,

  494. this guy's just trying to preserve us, hide.

  495. The ones that don't see it are the ones making the excuses.

  496. I don't think Jesus asks us for things that don't have risk in it.

  497. Most of the things Jesus asks us carries risk in it.

  498. Because if there is no risk, there is no need for faith.

  499. So where is the sin in self-preservation?

  500. Where is the sin in self-preservation?

  501. Where is the sin?

  502. The sin is that I begin to prioritize,

  503. I begin to prioritize my well-being,

  504. dignity,

  505. safety,

  506. comfort,

  507. provision,

  508. plan,

  509. and life

  510. over,

  511. one, the leading of the Spirit,

  512. two,

  513. Scriptures,

  514. three, you.

  515. Therein lies the sin.

  516. That's where the sin is.

  517. The reason self-preservation is an evil sin,

  518. even when we say sin, it doesn't carry weight.

  519. The reason self-preservation is evil,

  520. and it's an evil that I'm doing,

  521. is because it prioritizes my well-being,

  522. my dignity, my safety,

  523. my comfort, my provision, my plan,

  524. and my life first over the leading of the Holy Spirit.

  525. Therein lies the biggest resistance.

  526. I'm resisting the Spirit

  527. because he's asking me to do something that will jeopardize my self.

  528. Therein lies the first sin.

  529. This is the order that we should follow.

  530. Leading of the Spirit,

  531. Scriptures, where the Scriptures say,

  532. follow the Holy Spirit, where the Scriptures say,

  533. you need to do this, where the Scriptures say,

  534. do not say to him who is cold,

  535. be warm, I will pray for you.

  536. It says so in the Book of James.

  537. And then the third one is prioritizing it over you.

  538. Because in that one commandment,

  539. everything is broken, right?

  540. He said, keep two commandments.

  541. Love the Lord your God,

  542. love your neighbor as you love yourself.

  543. There is the sin.

  544. Any questions before we go on?

  545. Yeah, assertiveness is bad

  546. when assertiveness requires that I trample you down.

  547. To assert myself,

  548. if you have to be tread down,

  549. then assertiveness is bad.

  550. I'm not saying assertiveness as in

  551. at times you have to take a stance.

  552. Not that kind of assertiveness.

  553. Assertiveness that requires that

  554. dillna be pushed down so that I can rise.

  555. That assertiveness is bad

  556. and that's very common in the world.

  557. Then let's use the word aggressiveness

  558. where one tries to

  559. I have to stand on your back to rise up

  560. without doing that I won't be able to rise up.

  561. It's an assertiveness that harms you

  562. so that I may benefit.

  563. Yeah, and you can use the word aggressiveness too.

  564. Any other questions?

  565. Yeah, so when I prioritize my well-being,

  566. my dignity, my safety, my comfort, my provision,

  567. my plan in life over yours,

  568. then therein I'm sinning.

  569. The whole Samaritan story,

  570. the whole love the Lord your God and love your neighbor.

  571. Everything that is summed up in just those two.

  572. It says that I'm sinning.

  573. I'm sinning.

  574. I'm sinning.

  575. I'm sinning.

  576. I'm sinning.

  577. I'm sinning.

  578. I'm sinning.

  579. I'm sinning.

  580. I'm sinning.

  581. I'm sinning.

  582. I'm sinning.

  583. I'm sinning.

  584. It says the law and the prophets are fulfilled in those two.

  585. It says the law and the prophets are fulfilled in that command.

  586. We did a teaching called,

  587. and the second is like it, long ago.

  588. And in that teaching it says that

  589. God is not saying love Sheldon instead of yourself.

  590. God is saying love Sheldon as yourself.

  591. Therefore, as you desire provision for yourself,

  592. as you desire provision for Sheldon.

  593. Therefore, as you desire that he be welcome,

  594. therefore, as you desire that you be welcome in a group of strangers,

  595. make sure that he is welcome.

  596. Therefore, as you desire to be warm in winter,

  597. desire that for him.

  598. So there is an element to loving yourself,

  599. but self-preservation completely hollows that out.

  600. Because self-preservation is,

  601. once everything is taken care of,

  602. then I will begin to think of him

  603. if I have enough.

  604. And that is where my preservation has entirely become

  605. my exoskeleton, my protection.

  606. I'm not trusting my preservation to God

  607. because I have to first gather into my barn

  608. so that I have plenty before I can supply him.

  609. And therein lies the sin.

  610. This is a radical religion, guys.

  611. And the radic...

  612. What is radical about this religion?

  613. It just refuses you to be the king of your life,

  614. to be the idol of your life,

  615. to be the main part of your life.

  616. It does not allow you that privilege.

  617. Self is not allowed

  618. except in its identification with Christ.

  619. And then your true self is discovered.

  620. Not in your identity in Christ,

  621. but in your identifying with Christ.

  622. By picking on some things that you know

  623. are so important to you

  624. that if I took it away from you,

  625. it would be like...

  626. it would completely disrupt your life.

  627. It can be different things for different people.

  628. For some of us it could be our job,

  629. for some of us it could be our independence,

  630. for some of us it could be our money,

  631. for some of us it could be...

  632. Cat.

  633. It could be our cat.

  634. Praise the Lord for problems I don't have.

  635. Praise the Lord for problems I don't have.

  636. So it could be different things.

  637. It could be different things.

  638. Yeah.

  639. And so start with the one thing.

  640. While I'm doing this,

  641. I know what the one thing is.

  642. You'll find self-preservation is a repetitive habit.

  643. You'll find so many times in life

  644. you will know what God wants,

  645. you know what is right through scriptures,

  646. you know what is right by the Holy Spirit.

  647. You won't know what is right in terms of the community

  648. and yet your heart desires to do it

  649. but then up comes this wall of self-preservation

  650. and you begin to take a step or two back

  651. and you say tomorrow.

  652. One of the ways to identify the things you are preserving

  653. is by seeing what you delay.

  654. In your delay of doing something,

  655. you will begin to spot the things you are taking more time on.

  656. You don't want to pull the trigger on it.

  657. You just want to wait another day.

  658. You want another confirmation.

  659. Sometimes the reason we ask for confirmations

  660. is just so that we can secure something from God

  661. before we give something away

  662. and God ain't playing that game.

  663. So often the confirmation doesn't come from God.

  664. And then you have to go looking at every license plate.

  665. God won't play that game.

  666. When I desire confirmation

  667. because I want to secure something from God

  668. before I will take a risk,

  669. God will not give me that,

  670. especially if you're an older Christian

  671. as in if you've been around with Christ for a while.

  672. Definitely ain't happening.

  673. I speak from experience,

  674. not from my experience,

  675. I speak from experience,

  676. not from five years ago,

  677. from five days ago.

  678. This is perhaps the most basic instinct of flesh.

  679. Most basic instinct of flesh this is.

  680. Self-preservation.

  681. See it as absolutely evil.

  682. Think of what the Sanhedrin,

  683. the 72 most knowledgeable,

  684. most well-trained,

  685. most taught Jews

  686. of the land.

  687. Think of what they're saying.

  688. For the sake of a nation,

  689. one man should die.

  690. What are they saying?

  691. To preserve ourselves

  692. and our way of functioning

  693. and our systems

  694. and our power,

  695. we must get rid of him.

  696. It's the most basic of instincts.

  697. Think of the woman who brings a child

  698. and says to Solomon,

  699. go ahead and sever this child in two.

  700. Basic instinct, eh?

  701. It's what national geographic

  702. documentaries are made of.

  703. Self-preservation.

  704. It's perhaps the most basic instinct of our flesh

  705. and the most deadly to our faith.

  706. Most deadly to our faith.

  707. Why?

  708. Because it,

  709. because it dulls.

  710. It's the most basic instinct

  711. of our flesh.

  712. Because it dulls.

  713. It dulls our witness.

  714. It dulls our witness.

  715. It absolutely dulls our witness.

  716. So how can we begin to

  717. chip away at it

  718. or bring a sledgehammer to it

  719. so that Christ may be formed?

  720. Let's look at two or three

  721. and then I'll make sure I stop

  722. by the next 10 minutes.

  723. First,

  724. keep thinking of these lines.

  725. I'm not my own.

  726. I belong to Christ.

  727. I belong to you.

  728. This, if I began to practice

  729. or you began to practice

  730. would absolutely shatter self-preservation.

  731. Just this one line

  732. and it's scripture.

  733. If,

  734. we've been through this

  735. about two years ago

  736. but some of you perhaps were not there.

  737. When someone asks you the question

  738. who do you belong to

  739. most Christians who are born again will say

  740. I belong to Christ.

  741. But according to 1 Corinthians 6

  742. you cannot belong to Christ

  743. till you get to a point

  744. where you say I am not my own.

  745. The scriptures say

  746. do you not know that you are not your own?

  747. You have been born at a price

  748. that you do not belong to yourself anymore.

  749. One has to first arrive at

  750. I am not my own.

  751. And then you can go to

  752. I belong to Christ.

  753. And that would be convenient

  754. but then he takes it one step further

  755. and he says I belong to you.

  756. That is an absolutely certain way

  757. to destroy self-preservation

  758. and that is so hard to do.

  759. I can't force you to belong to me

  760. but I can choose to belong to you.

  761. And then if that is said

  762. what does it look like

  763. when you begin to believe that?

  764. This, sorry go ahead.

  765. Yeah, it has to start

  766. it's impossible.

  767. Yeah, it's impossible

  768. the only one who could pull it off

  769. for the entire earth was

  770. Christ.

  771. But start with a small group of people

  772. and include in that group

  773. people that you don't yet fully love.

  774. It's easy to do this

  775. for someone you love.

  776. You do it for your spouses

  777. and your children

  778. and your family

  779. on a regular basis.

  780. Every parent, every spouse

  781. does this

  782. I am not my own

  783. I belong to Christ

  784. I belong to you

  785. I mean that is the marriage vow

  786. isn't it?

  787. That I am laying myself down before you

  788. I no longer belong to myself

  789. I am yours

  790. that's what we say in our vows to each other.

  791. So spouses and families

  792. and parents do this on a regular basis

  793. but it is still so compact

  794. it has to go beyond that

  795. and that is where

  796. why not start with a small group of people

  797. and the sooner we get here

  798. the more you will find

  799. God beginning to use you part of you

  800. and that is the way

  801. the sooner you will find

  802. God beginning to use you powerfully

  803. because the end of self preservation

  804. will be the beginning

  805. of power through you

  806. because there is nothing that can stop now

  807. so include in your group

  808. a few that you do not yet

  809. love the way you love

  810. the ones that you love

  811. start small

  812. and then let it increase

  813. any questions?

  814. I am not my own

  815. I belong to Christ

  816. I am not my own is difficult too

  817. I am not my own is to say

  818. this is the end of self determination

  819. I do not determine

  820. or make decisions

  821. for my life anymore

  822. because someone else makes them

  823. this is what John 21

  824. Jesus says to Peter in John 21

  825. when you were young

  826. you would decide where to go

  827. but the days are coming

  828. where they will bind you

  829. and take you

  830. where you do not want to go

  831. what a beautiful religion we serve

  832. this is no ordinary religion

  833. this is not for namby pamby

  834. pamper wearing devotees

  835. this is hard man

  836. this is hard man

  837. I am not my own

  838. I belong to Christ

  839. I belong to you

  840. and if this is backed by love

  841. it becomes so easy

  842. so easy

  843. so easy

  844. why do you do

  845. what your will does not want to do

  846. why would I do

  847. why would I do

  848. what my will

  849. does not

  850. want to do

  851. simple

  852. because

  853. I love someone

  854. because I love someone

  855. more than

  856. my life

  857. and my will

  858. that's the only way

  859. you can get a cat into my house

  860. I have to love you so much

  861. that you can bring a cat in

  862. and thank God

  863. that ain't happening

  864. moving on

  865. why would I do

  866. what my will does not want to do

  867. this is the reason why

  868. so

  869. to try self preservation

  870. to try and self preservation

  871. without loving God

  872. is going to be really difficult

  873. very difficult

  874. it's going to be very difficult

  875. but if you begin to love him

  876. this will become easy

  877. and the strange thing is

  878. if you love him

  879. he'll deliver hammer blows

  880. he'll collapse it

  881. Matthew 26 verse 39

    Matthew 26:39

  882. earlier today

  883. or last night when he was in the garden

  884. at Gethsemane

  885. that's what you're seeing

  886. Father is there any way

  887. I can escape this cup

  888. is there any way

  889. I can

  890. I can escape what I'm going to

  891. what I know I'll have to go through

  892. and then he makes that statement

  893. but not my will

  894. but yours be done

  895. he does not want

  896. no

  897. no

  898. no

  899. no

  900. no

  901. no real human being

  902. would want to be put

  903. through the torment

  904. that he would be put through

  905. and then he says

  906. not my will but

  907. yours be done

  908. and the Holy Spirit will

  909. help us make these choices

  910. because

  911. he

  912. guys he lives fully in me

  913. if I want this

  914. he can begin to help me

  915. and like I said

  916. wrestle through it

  917. fail

  918. get up

  919. wrestle through it

  920. fail

  921. get up

  922. there's no harm

  923. in failing while you're wrestling

  924. the harm is in not wrestling

  925. the shame is when

  926. we don't wrestle

  927. the shame is not in failing

  928. when you're wrestling

  929. the shame is

  930. is in not wrestling

  931. and when you wrestle

  932. invite a few people to watch

  933. one of the

  934. one of the easiest ways

  935. to win

  936. is to invite

  937. and encourage us to watch

  938. those that wrestle

  939. quietly without anyone

  940. watching

  941. usually don't win

  942. invite a few people to watch

  943. share your story with them

  944. I'm struggling through this

  945. there's nobody here

  946. who does not need

  947. an Aaron and a Hermann

  948. the Spirit of God

  949. really likes helping

  950. the Spirit of God

  951. really likes helping

  952. what does it look like

  953. when Jesus can help

  954. I'll end with these questions

  955. what does it look like

  956. what does it look like

  957. when Jesus can

  958. help himself

  959. to my life

  960. at will

  961. what will happen

  962. if I'm serious about this

  963. he'll start

  964. using

  965. the things of my life

  966. he'll use

  967. time

  968. treasure

  969. talent

  970. strength

  971. and things

  972. in my life

  973. and he'll use

  974. time

  975. and he'll use

  976. time

  977. and he'll use

  978. time

  979. in my life

  980. to serve

  981. his interest

  982. in others

  983. and he'll do it

  984. he'll do it

  985. by emptying me out

  986. before

  987. replenishing me

  988. so here are the scary parts

  989. what does it look like

  990. when Jesus can help himself

  991. to my life at will

  992. he'll start

  993. he'll start using

  994. what

  995. time, treasure, talent, strength, things

  996. things that are important to me

  997. he'll start using

  998. to do what

  999. to serve his interest

1000. great, I love doing things for the Lord

1001. serve his interest in others

  1002. why others

1003. why can't it be just you and me

  1004. doing great things

  1005. for the Kingdom

  1006. nope, for others

1007. how will he do it

1008. he'll do it by emptying me out

1009. nuts, is there another way

  1010. nope

1011. but after he empties me out

  1012. he'll replenish me

1013. just the other way around it

  1014. what a cool God

1015. he's an all or nothing God

  1016. but he can live

  1017. in between

1018. but it's not his favorite

  1019. thing to do

1020. do you love me more than these

1021. well then, feed my sheep

1022. he's not talking to pastors

1023. he's talking to each of us here

1024. do you love me more than these

  1025. feed my sheep

  1026. you know in the

  1027. in Philippians 2 verse 17 and 18

    Philippians 2:17

  1028. it says

  1029. if I'm

1030. Paul is talking and he says

  1031. if

1032. even if I am to be

1033. poured out as a drink offering

1034. upon the sacrificial offering of your faith

1035. I am glad and I rejoice with you

  1036. even if I am

  1037. poured out

  1038. as a drink offering

  1039. upon the sacrificial offering

  1040. that you are

  1041. I'm glad

  1042. and it's such a cool thing

  1043. once

1044. you read it in Numbers 15 verse 3 and 5

    Numbers 15:3

  1045. here's what it says

  1046. it says that once

1047. Israel entered the promised land

  1048. whenever anyone would bring

1049. an offering to the Lord

1050. like a voluntary offering to the Lord

1051. once they entered the promised land

1052. they had to pour upon

  1053. the promised land

  1054. on the offering

  1055. on the altar

  1056. a liter of wine

  1057. they had to

1058. a drink offering was suddenly commanded

1059. once they entered the land

1060. so you could bring an offering

1061. put it on the altar

1062. then you had to bring some grain

1063. and overall that you would have to pour out

1064. and then the fragrance would rise to the Lord

1065. and it used to be called an ascending

  1066. fire fragrance or whatever

1067. and so what Paul is saying is this

1068. I am being poured out so that they can be

  1069. beautifully

1070. I am being poured out

1071. so they can be offered up

  1072. just think of that

1073. when God begins to do that with you

1074. where you begin to say

  1075. Father pour me out

1076. I am being poured out

1077. I am being poured out

  1078. so you can be

  1079. offered up

  1080. isn't that brilliant

1081. wouldn't you love to do that

  1082. who here wouldn't

  1083. who here wouldn't

1084. it's just so natural for us as believers

  1085. to work this

1086. this is what you do for your children

1087. this is what you do for the ones you love

1088. you being poured out so they can be

  1089. offered up

1090. which believer here wouldn't want this

1091. but to be poured out

  1092. self preservation must end

  1093. we pour ourselves out

1094. so that they can be offered up

  1095. so labor guys

  1096. work give

1097. so that you can present others

  1098. as ones that you

  1099. offer up

  1100. this is Paul's desire

  1101. this is my desire

1102. and once you have the desire

  1103. run labor work fail

  1104. run labor work fail

  1105. run labor work fail

1106. but more and more will be offered

1107. this is how we do it

  1108. any questions

  1109. let me pray

  1110. Jesus

  1111. I need

1112. you to bring a sledgehammer

  1113. Holy Spirit to

  1114. our lives here

  1115. that have such chunks

1116. and blocks of self preservation

1117. please oh God spare nobody

1118. I'm asking as the pastor of this church

  1119. spare nobody

1120. start with me but spare nobody

1121. I'm asking that we resist you but that you spare nobody

1122. if we resist you yes

1123. there's nothing you can do

1124. because you don't usurp our will

1125. but I ask oh God

  1126. please

1127. across this room and to anybody else

  1128. who hears

  1129. self preservation must end

1130. otherwise the glory of God

1131. and the kingdom of God

  1132. cannot advance

1133. so we bring before you our exoskeletons

  1134. our outer covering

  1135. whatever it is

  1136. independence pride

  1137. money

  1138. whatever it is

  1139. independence pride

  1140. money

  1141. risk aversion

1142. individuality our own individual traits

  1143. distrust

  1144. hurt

1145. all this drives us into this place where we begin to preserve

1146. please ask that you end it so that you may have

1147. a group of ordinary people that can be used

1148. as and when you want oh God please

1149. yes we understand that if you begin to do this

1150. that it will be to serve your interest in others

1151. sometimes locally sometimes at other places

1152. and that it will require an emptying of myself

1153. but then I've got to trust you to preserve my life

  1154. on Good Friday

1155. on the day that you did nothing to preserve your life

1156. when you could have called down 12 legions of angels

1157. when you did nothing to preserve my life

  1158. this is our prayer

1159. granted I pray in Jesus name

  1160. Amen

1161. cool guys see you Sunday if you need prayer

1162. there will be people here to pray with you

1163. feel free to come up to them and they'll pray for you
