  2. Welcome to the official podcast of the Marcionite Church

  3. 0:18

  4. Our normal format is to answer theological questions from parishioners and general listeners, but today we're pulling on a single thread that begins with an astronomical fact and unravels the foundational narrative of traditional post Nicene Christianity.

  5. 0:37

  6. It's an academic paper from the Journal of Pre Nicene Christian Studies, and it's quite a mouthful.

  7. But it's titled The Theophanic Replacement Protocol, a Forensic Reconstruction of Divine Identity Theft, Textual Erasure, and the Formation of Nicene Christianity.

  8. 0:57

  9. And part of its focus is on perhaps the most widely ignored celestial event that transpired during the time of Jesus on Earth.

  10. Now, before we start a necessary preface, what we're discussing today isn't a new creed or some sketchy scroll and a clay pod found by fast talking grave robbers in a desert.

  11. 1:21

  12. No, it's a historical forensic model.

  13. What we're doing is examining textual and astronomical evidence to reconstruct a possible sequence of events.

  14. Now, whether you end up agreeing with it or not, our goal is to simply follow the evidence and see if this model provides A coherent explanation for some of the most persistent puzzles in Christian origins.

  15. 1:47

  16. Now, here's our starting fact.

  17. As astronomers will tell you, a total solar eclipse can only occur during a new moon, and only during a new moon.

  18. Now for Jews, it's called Rosh Chodash.

  19. 2:03

  20. Not sure if I'm pronouncing that correctly.

  21. And it's a divinely appointed feast in the Torah.

  22. It holds, I guess, apparently, very important religious significance for them, so much so that I think you'll appreciate the soon to be revealed irony contained in the statement from their prophet Amos in the Torah Old Testament.

  23. 2:24

  24. And that's from Amos chapter 518 through 20, who describes the day of the Lord as quote UN quote darkness.

  25. And with that, let's move on to our key text, the Evangelion, also called the Gospel of the Lord.

  26. 2:41

  27. The revelation received by the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus opens with this first sentence.

  28. Quote.

  29. In the 15th year of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Jesus descended into Capernaum, a city in Galilee, UN quote.

  30. 3:01

  31. And the corresponding date of Tiberius 15th year is 29 AD, and on November 24th of that same year, a total solar eclipse was 100% visible over that very city named Capernaum.

  32. 3:19

  33. That's right, Jesus descended from heaven during a total solar eclipse over Capernaum and took on a fully human form just as the Gospel describes it.

  34. Now, this isn't just a curiosity beyond the verified celestial event itself.

  35. 3:37

  36. It it it forces a deeper, uncomfortable question.

  37. Is this a random celestial coincidence or a deliberate strategic declaration of war by the one descending?

  38. And this is where it's important that we be very clear about things because a lot of people are going to immediately object.

  39. 4:00

  40. Some will hear this and say this is just an attack on the Old Testament Torah scriptures.

  41. Well, let's disarm that right now.

  42. This model depends on taking the Hebrew Scriptures with utter seriousness.

  43. It accepts their portrait of Yahweh, the commands for conquest, the genocidal commands, the covenant of law, the conditional blessings and curses, as an accurate, coherent character portrait.

  44. 4:30

  45. You see, the problem only arises when another religion, in this case Christianity, later claims that this same deity is identical to the father of infinite grace, revealed only by Jesus.

  46. So the academic paper is not an attack on the Torah, but a textual analysis of a later theological claim made about it.

  47. 4:54

  48. So if this theophanic model, the eclipse and its new moon and descent of Jesus is correct, the revealer of a new God appeared on the day of the new moon and weaponized its very sign by darkening it, just as a Yahweh prophet seemed to predict it.

  49. 5:13

  50. And as an aside, a tangential sub reference, it seems a little bit odd that Yahweh's prophets would describe the day of the Lord as a dark day if they weren't referring to a literal solar eclipse.

  51. Something to think about anyway.

  52. 5:30

  53. This moves us beyond irony into the realm of cosmic confrontation.

  54. And for those on the wrong side of this confrontation, they knew exactly what it meant.

  55. And this confrontation becomes terrifyingly personal.

  56. Jesus's first act is to enter the synagogue in Kaepernaum and confront an unclean spirit, a demon.

  57. 5:54

  58. It looks at him and screams.

  59. I know who you are, the Holy one of God.

  60. Have you come to destroy us?

  61. Now think about this.

  62. The demon automatically assumes no it it knows Jesus's purpose is destructive.

  63. 6:11

  64. Destructive to them, to their order, perhaps even to the synagogues where they obviously hang out and pass the time before Jesus so rudely interrupted them.

  65. Now, at this point, the implications become stark, and for those from the apologetics industry, their defensive reflexes will kick in right about now, and another objection will arise.

  66. 6:38

  67. This is ancient Gnosticism or Marcianism.

  68. It's a heresy the church rejected.

  69. To which theologians, the intellectually honest ones anyway, should reply.

  70. While the Church Fathers were brilliant theologians and politicians making Canon and creed in the wake of empire and persecution, they were building a unified system.

  71. 7:03

  72. But this paper is conducting a historical autopsy asking if that unified system they built was the original foundation or a later structure built over a different 1.

  73. So invoking their authority to end the discussion is to assume the very thing that we're investigating.

  74. 7:25

  75. So let's just hit the mute button on the wild eyed peanut gallery and quietly and thoughtfully follow the evidence wherever it leads.

  76. Now in this case, we have a foundational event that declares a new beginning by quite literally eclipsing the old.

  77. 7:43

  78. We have a spiritual entity from the old order instantly recognizing an alien, destructive authority, and it is very, very afraid.

  79. And then we have centuries of history, the systematic editing of texts, the intimidation of communities, the burning of rival scriptures, culminating in an imperial council that legally defined Yahweh as the maker of heaven and earth.

  80. 8:13

  81. So let's Add all this up.

  82. When we try to fit an identity to the force that would orchestrate such a campaign to overwrite the original revelation, only one identity fits all the evidence.

  83. It's the identity implied by the Demon's cry and vindicated by the centuries long historical campaign.

  84. 8:36

  85. Simply put, the force that orchestrated the replacement of the eclipse theophany functioned as the cosmic adversary to the true God of grace.

  86. Its nature is that of the Accuser, the legalist, the deceiver who masquerades as ultimate authority.

  87. 8:54

  88. And you know, I can already hear the final, loudest objection of them all.

  89. This destroys the unity of the Bible.

  90. It destroys the unity of God.

  91. To which, we must ask, is that unity an original divine fact, or is it a hopelessly contrived palimpsest, a later editorial achievement, guided partially perhaps, by a powerful malignant force?

  92. 9:21

  93. If a unity has to be enforced by councils, explained by complex allegory, or by dancing on the head of theological pins and defended by calling all alternatives heresy, then perhaps we're witnessing the brilliant success of the stapled together judeo-christian synthesis, not the proof of its pre existence.

  94. 9:45

  95. You see, the power of this eclipse theophany model is in its explanatory coherence.

  96. It doesn't create new problems.

  97. In fact, it provides a single stark solution to the oldest problems.

  98. The character clash between the testaments, the quote UN quote silent years of Jesus where he sleeps on mom's couch until he turns 30, the violent political history of Canon formation.

  99. 10:13

  100. It ties them all together into one narrative.

  101. And isn't that the way of things that are truthful or of truth?

  102. Are we not reminded of the verse that God is not the author of confusion?

  103. So what does this mean for us?

  104. 10:29

  105. Well, it means the crucifixion was not the adversary's defeat.

  106. In fact, it's actually his tactical sacrifice.

  107. Think of it as a chess move.

  108. His real victory was in the study in the Council chamber where the revealer's message, the Gospel of the Lord, was captured, edited, annotated, replaced and synthesized.

  109. 10:52

  110. This is why the eclipse theophany is not a detail.

  111. It's the original foundational stone that was buried.

  112. And our choice is this.

  113. Do we build our faith on the later synthetic house constructed over at a horse stall in Bethlehem?

  114. 11:08

  115. Or do we dig down, find that original foundation, and build a new?

  116. You see, to be a Christian in the restored sense is to be a follower of the Evangelion alone, the first and only gospel preached by Paul the Apostle.

  117. 11:24

  118. And he defended it with the words.

  119. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which is preached by me is not after man, For I neither received it of man, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  120. And that de facto makes you a citizen of a Kingdom, not of this world order.

  121. 11:44

  122. It makes you a child of a Father who was, until the eclipse over Capernaum, entirely unknown.

  123. And it's important to be crystal clear about this.

  124. This discipleship doesn't reform the old house.

  125. It acknowledges the old house belong to a different owner.

  126. 12:03

  127. It walks away and with clear eyes and steady hands, builds a new one on the foundation of the 29 AD eclipse, Theophany and the Evangelion Gospel, again using only the materials delivered by the Revealer.

  128. 12:20

  129. And by the way, for a free copy of the Evangelon the Gospel, visit the very first bible.org.

  130. The eclipse was the puncture in the fabric of the Old World.

  131. The light that came through was the light of a newly revealed sun.

  132. 12:37

  133. Our Calling is to live by that light and that light alone.

  134. And you may find it of interest that the Mercy United Church still celebrates the November 24th descent every year.

  135. The eclipse theophany is just one of many subjects that the paper sheds light on.

  136. 12:55

  137. It's actually quite amazing.

  138. But like most academic papers, it probably had little chance of seeing the light of day.

  139. And if you're interested in an expanded podcast on that paper, let us know in the comments below, where I'll also include a link directly to it.

  140. 13:12

  141. Thanks again for joining us.

  142. And by the way, we don't sell anything.

  143. But if you derive some benefit from the program, please share it with others.
