  1. If you would take a Bible and open with me to John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 10, we're gonna be in verses one through 18, but

    John 10 chapter mention

  3. I'm gonna start and read verses one through 6.

  4. Uh, actually we're gonna read 935 through 1/6 to get our

  5. context here. The Bible says Jesus heard that

  6. they had cast out, cast him out and having found him, he said,

  7. do you believe in the Son of Man?

  8. And he answered, who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him.

  9. Jesus said to him, you have seen him, and it is he who is

  10. speaking to you. He said Lord, I believe and he

  11. worshipped him. Jesus said for judgment, I came

  12. into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those

  13. who see may become blind. Some of the Pharisees near him

  14. heard these things and said to him, Are we also blind?

  15. Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no guilt,

  16. but now that you say we see, your guilt remains.

  17. Truly, truly. I say to you, he who does not

  18. enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in another way, that

  19. man is a thief and a robber, but he who enters by the door is

  20. the. Shepherd of the Sheep.

  21. To him the gatekeeper opens, the sheep hear his voice, and he

  22. calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  23. When he has brought out all of his own, he goes before them,

  24. and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

  25. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for

  26. they do not know the voice of strangers.

  27. This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not

  28. understand what he was saying to them.

  29. This is the word of the Lord. Would you pray with me?

  30. Lord Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd.

  31. And. We, your sheep are glad forever.

  32. That when you saw the wolf approaching, you did not run

  33. like a hired hand, but you laid down your life for the sheep.

  34. Lord, we pray that as we as we think about what it means.

  35. For you to be the door and for you to be the Good Shepherd and

  36. for us to be the sheep, we pray that through your word that we

  37. would all once again hear. Your voice, not the voice of

  38. strangers or robbers or thieves, but the voice of our Savior.

  39. And that we would hearing you, that we would follow you.

  40. So we pray that you would call us by name, speak to us in this

  41. place at this time in a way that we can understand.

  42. We ask it in Christ's name, Amen.

  43. So one of the most encouraging but unflattering.

  44. Metaphors that the Bible uses to speak about the people of God is

  45. sheep. The sheep of this faster it

  46. sounds. Sweet, it goes good on a card

  47. until you spend time with sheep and realize how dumb and

  48. obdurate and needy they are. Sheep are not what you want to

  49. be. There's there's never been a kid

  50. who who lays in bed at night staying awake that that God

  51. would only give. Him the, the, the speed of a

  52. sheep, right? We think about cheetahs, we

  53. think about bears, we think about lions, any other cool

  54. animals, but God calls us sheep. And in this text, Christ the

  55. great Shepherd is going to remind us that he is our

  56. shepherd and that we are his sheep.

  57. And I want to, I want to meditate on this text with you

  58. and then speak to you about these things.

  59. Trying to apply them when we when we get to the to the end.

  60. So in verses one through 6. I want to show you that that

  61. Christ is both shed and shepherd.

  62. He's he's he's the paddock where the sheep are stored and he's

  63. the shepherd to whom belong the sheep.

  64. So in in verse one, Jesus says in in response to what had.

  65. Happened with the healing of the blind man and John Chapter 9

    John 9 chapter mention

  66. Jesus says truly, truly. I say to you, he who does not

  67. enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way,

  68. that man is a thief and a robber, but he who enters by the

  69. door is the. Shepherd of the.

  70. Sheep. And to him the gatekeeper opens.

  71. The sheep hears voice, and he calls.

  72. His own sheep by name and leaves them out.

  73. OK, so. A couple of words here.

  74. First off, just a word of context.

  75. Do you remember the this same context goes all the way back to

  76. John chapter 8? Maybe you do not remember that,

    John 8 chapter mention

  77. but Jesus preached a message in John chapter.

  78. Eight that got him that the the Jews picked up stones to stone.

  79. Him and that he leaves the temple at the end of John

    John 8 chapter mention

  80. chapter 8 and at the beginning of John Chapter 9, he sees a man

    John 9 chapter mention

  81. born blind from birth, and he restores his sight.

  82. And it's this. Weird irony that John paints for

  83. us that the only guy in the whole.

  84. Text that can actually see. Is a man who's been born blind

  85. and he doesn't even see until the very end.

  86. But all throughout there's this mega theme in that text of the

  87. religious leaders hating and persecuting Christ for healing

  88. his people. And this text ends in verse in

  89. chapter 10, verse 31. This, it doesn't end here, but

  90. it continues the same theme. The Jews picked up stones again

  91. to stone him. And so it's this idea of Jesus

  92. the Good Shepherd coming to his people and the religious leaders

  93. hate him because as he's going to teach us in this text, the

  94. religious leader of that day were thieves and robbers.

  95. They were not good shepherds. So something that we need to

  96. understand about when Jesus says when he's talking about the

  97. sheepfold in in this time we're told that that public places,

  98. all the shepherds would bring their own.

  99. Flocks into the same paddock. It was a.

  100. Walled place with one door and a watchman.

  101. And so. All of us, all the men of the

  102. church who have sheep, we all take them to the same place, put

  103. them in. And then in the.

  104. Morning. When we want to lead them out to

  105. pasture, the question is how do we sort them out?

  106. And the answer is, I have spent enough time with my sheep that I

  107. know them by name, and when I call them, they recognize my

  108. voice and they won't follow anybody else.

  109. So some other. Guy can say here's a little

  110. fluffy or whatever. All he wants.

  111. They're not going to follow that guy.

  112. And so you have, you have in this picture, you have the

  113. public sort of pin for the sheep.

  114. You have the one door and that door has a watchman that won't

  115. let strangers in. And then there are two types of

  116. people that try and get into the sheep paddock.

  117. The 1st is thieves and robbers. Those who are climbing over the

  118. wall, they don't go to the door because they won't be let in,

  119. right? So you think about like driving

  120. through a neighborhood. If you see a man in the middle

  121. of the night standing at the front door of the house and he's

  122. got a key and he's working with a light to try and get the key

  123. in, you're not going to call the cops like it's it's, he's coming

  124. home late. But if you if you're driving

  125. through and the city at night and you look over and there's a

  126. guy breaking a window, you might call the cops and it might be a

  127. situation where maybe he forgot his key and he has to break his.

  128. Own window, but we'll let the cops sort that out.

  129. We just know by the by the optics of it, he does not.

  130. Belong there, it's not his house.

  131. Jesus is saying the same thing about the thieves and the

  132. robbers. Those who try and break in.

  133. To to get the sheep are thieves. And robbers.

  134. But you also have another person coming into the paddock and

  135. that's the Good Shepherd. And he is recognized by the

  136. gatekeeper and his own sheep. Both the gatekeeper and his own

  137. sheep recognize him. It's it's a John tells us this

  138. is a, a figure of speech. And so we want to be careful not

  139. to push it too far and get too much into the details.

  140. But if you think. About who might be the

  141. gatekeeper in this context of of Christ coming to his own, the

  142. sheep hearing his voice. Who's the guy?

  143. Who's the gatekeeper guarding? Well, I think you can make an

  144. argument. I'm not going to fight you.

  145. For it, but I think. It's the Holy Spirit who is

  146. performing the words. He is performing the miracles

  147. and the and the and blessing the words of Christ as, as Christ

  148. comes to his people and says, I am the Messiah, I am your

  149. savior, that the Holy Spirit is testifying to him to Israel that

  150. they might follow. And so you have, you have in, in

  151. Chapter 9, verse 30, Luke in Chapter 9, verse 30, you have

  152. the, the, the religious leaders are grilling this man who has

  153. been born blind and, and they say in verse 29, actually, we

  154. know that God has spoken to Moses, But As for this man, we

  155. don't know where he comes from. We don't know who this guy is.

  156. We do know Moses was sent by God.

  157. We don't know about this Jesus guy.

  158. And then the blind guy very sarcastically says why this is

  159. an amazing thing. You do not know where he comes

  160. from and yet he has opened my eyes.

  161. How many of you have ever seen this before?

  162. That a man born blind can have his sight restored?

  163. It's never happened. So the so the.

  164. Work of Christ through the Holy Spirit is testifying to the

  165. identity of Christ. He he goes on.

  166. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a

  167. worshipper of God and does His will, God listens to him.

  168. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone open

  169. the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God,

  170. he could do nothing. And they answered him, You were

  171. born in utter sin. And would you teach us and they

  172. cast it out. So do you see the the metaphor

  173. there you've got the Holy Spirit through the works and the words

  174. of Christ is testifying to Israel and that that Christ is

  175. the Messiah. He's.

  176. The gatekeeper he is, He is showing to Israel that Christ is

  177. Lord and they're just rejecting. Let me say this.

  178. In passing, because a lot of tender hearted Christians fear

  179. lest they commit the blasphemy of the Holy.

  180. Spirit, the one unforgivable sin.

  181. Let me put that in the context of the Gospels where the

  182. blasphemy of the Holy Spirit in context Christ by the agency of

  183. the Holy Spirit is, is miraculously casting out demons

  184. and healing the sick and restoring sight to the blind.

  185. And the Pharisees look at the witness of the Holy Spirit

  186. showing them that Christ is who he says he is.

  187. And they say it's not the Holy Spirit, it's it's the devil.

  188. And they attribute the work of God to Satan.

  189. And so that is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, which protects

  190. us or blinds us from seeing the glory of God in the face of

  191. Christ and believing in him. So if you're a tender hearted

  192. Christian and you're here saying, man, I'm just terrified

  193. that I might have committed the. Blasphemy of the holy.

  194. Spirit, relax. Relax.

  195. If you care about that, you haven't done it.

  196. If you if the if the greatest nightmare in your life is that

  197. you would somehow fall short of benefiting from the Lord Jesus

  198. Christ, who you know is Messiah you.

  199. Cannot have committed the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

  200. because you are confessing Christ is Lord, so in this

  201. context, Christ. Is the Good Shepherd.

  202. He is anointed by the Spirit, calling his own sheep by name

  203. and leading them. His sheep are responding and

  204. following, but the religious leaders do not the thieving and

  205. the robbing Jewish leaders at that time don't like when the

  206. Good Shepherd leads his sheep out of their dominion because

  207. that means less wool and less meat for them to devour.

  208. They hate Jesus because he's setting his people free from

  209. their tyranny. They they crucify him for this

  210. very thing. OK, in verses 7, seven through

  211. 10 you have Jesus changes the metaphor slightly and.

  212. And we're told it that Christ is the door of the sheep, and that

  213. he's also the shepherd of the sheep.

  214. So if you look in verse 6, it's very ironic statement that John

  215. makes this figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they

  216. did not understand what he was saying to them.

  217. He has just told us that that his sheep hear his voice, that

  218. he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  219. And then as he's speaking, John tells us the religious leaders

  220. didn't understand what he was saying.

  221. What's the implication they're not of his sheep if you scooch

  222. over across the column? To verse 26 or actually verse

  223. verse 22 at the towards the end of this text, they the Jews say

  224. in in verse 24. Rather, they say to Christ, How

  225. long will you keep us in suspense?

  226. If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

  227. And Jesus answered, I told you, and you don't believe.

  228. I've already told you. I've answered this question.

  229. You don't believe and he goes on to say.

  230. The. Works I do in my father's name

  231. bear witness about me, but you do not believe.

  232. What's the next phrase? Because you need more proof.

  233. You don't believe. Because you need me to tell you

  234. straight up and I'm speaking in mystery.

  235. What does he say? You do not believe because you

  236. are not among my sheep, my sheep, they're they're

  237. overarching mark of my sheep as that my sheep hear my voice and

  238. I know them and they follow me. So he's speaking to them and

  239. they do not understand or recognize his voice.

  240. Now in verse 7, chapter 10, Jesus again said to them, Truly,

  241. truly, I say to you, I'm the door of the sheep.

  242. All who came. Before me are thieves and

  243. robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.

  244. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will

  245. be saved, and he will go in and out and find pasture.

  246. The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy.

  247. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  248. I am the Good Shepherd, so he's the door.

  249. He's also the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his

  250. life for the sheep, he who has a hired hand, and not a shepherd

  251. who does not own the sheep. He sees the wolf coming, and he

  252. leaves the sheep and flees. The wolf snatches them and

  253. scatters them. He flees because he has not.

  254. He has a hired hand and he cares nothing for the sheep.

  255. I am the Good Shepherd, I know my own and my own know me, just

  256. as the Father knows me and I know the Father.

  257. I lay down my life for the sheep.

  258. So a couple of a couple of things here.

  259. First off, that Christ is the door.

  260. He has not let anyone in that does not.

  261. Work for him. They are thieves and robbers who

  262. interact with the sheep in some other name than Christ in some

  263. other gospel. They have not been sent by the.

  264. Lord, they come to the sheep. So.

  265. She might ask, why would somebody come to rob, steal,

  266. kill and destroy the people of God, the sheep of God's pasture?

  267. Why would they do that? The answer is because there's

  268. always money in the in the people of God.

  269. There's always power in the people of God.

  270. You can go. To I would counsel you against

  271. it, but you can go to. A lot of Christian.

  272. Bookstores and look long and hard and not find.

  273. Christian reading in there. A lot of it is just abject

  274. rubbish written by men and women who know that if you call

  275. something Christian it it'll sell.

  276. If you call a book a Christian book or if you go if you make a

  277. Christian movie. A lot of which are blasphemous

  278. and and totally missed the thrust of the gospel.

  279. But we call them Christian and Christians bye.

  280. Because unfortunately, Christians are often like sheep

  281. without shepherds and so the thieves are always trying to

  282. break in and steal. Christ tells us he's the Good

  283. Shepherd in verse 11. And I want you to think about

  284. this with me. In verse 11, he says, I'm the

  285. Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his

  286. life for the sheep. OK, He says in verse 14, I am

  287. the Good Shepherd. I know my own, and my own know

  288. me. Just as the.

  289. Father knows me and I know the Father.

  290. I lay down my life for the sheep.

  291. I have others that are not of this fold.

  292. I must bring them also and they will listen to my voice.

  293. So there will be 1 flock and 1 shepherd.

  294. So you have Christ who is the Good Shepherd, lays down his

  295. life for the sheep and he does that in combat with wolves.

  296. We need to understand when when Christ is dying on the cross, he

  297. is not proving for us an example of how just to suffer for what

  298. you believe. He is destroyed.

  299. He is defanging Satan, disarming the principalities and the

  300. powers that dominated the people of God.

  301. He's laying down his life for the sheep in combat with.

  302. Wolves and he shows in verse 14 and 15 something that is not

  303. often taught in in churches, but it's.

  304. Very true and very. Precious, and it's the idea of a

  305. particular protection for his own.

  306. Sheep. He tells you that a hired hand

  307. is going to bail when he. Sees a wolf coming because.

  308. These are not my sheep, and I can't get my arm back if I if it

  309. if it gets bitten off by a wolf. And so if for somebody else's

  310. sheep, I'll gladly take his money.

  311. I'll gladly lead them to water when I can.

  312. But if a wolf. Comes.

  313. I'm not about to. Bleed for somebody else's

  314. livestock that can be replaced. I, I, I like my body much too

  315. much for that. But Jesus says in verses 14 and

  316. 15 that he provides a particular protection for his people.

  317. And I want you to think about this with me.

  318. I'm a Good Shepherd. I know my own, and my own know

  319. me. Just as the.

  320. Father knows me, and I know the Father.

  321. Notice what he's not. Saying.

  322. He's not saying I have a pretty good relationship with with God,

  323. and then I have a pretty good relationship with my people.

  324. He is saying just as the Father knows me before the world began,

  325. there's perfect unity with the Father, relationship between the

  326. Father and the Son. And he says, I know my own, and

  327. my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the

  328. Father. And he says.

  329. I lay down my life not for the world, but for the sheep.

  330. So we need to let, we need to let the Scriptures say what the

  331. scriptures are saying. Yes, John 316 means what it

  332. says. God so loved the world that He

  333. gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever should believeth in

  334. Him. Would have eternal life would

  335. never perish and have eternal life.

  336. God loves the world. You can tell anybody at any

  337. point God loves you. There is a universality in the

  338. in one aspect of the love of God.

  339. At the same time there is also the Scriptures also teach a

  340. particularity to the love of God, that we rejoice in that

  341. here he, he says. He says that I know my own

  342. sheep, and I lay down my life for the sheep.

  343. He says in in John chapter 6, listen to the words of Christ.

    John 6 chapter mention

  344. I said to you that you have seen me, and yet you do not believe.

  345. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever

  346. comes to me I will never cast out, for I've come down from

  347. heaven to do not my own will, but the will of him who sent me,

  348. and this is the will of him who sent me.

  349. Then I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but

  350. raise it up on the last day. So the Father has given people

  351. to his son, and when his son dies, he lays down his life for

  352. his people. This is the same as in Ephesians

  353. where husbands notice we're not commanded as husbands to love.

  354. He doesn't say men love women like all men generally love all

  355. women generally. He says husbands love not all

  356. the women in the world, but love your wife as Christ loved not

  357. the world but the church and gave himself.

  358. Up for her. So there is a there is one

  359. aspect the Scriptures teach of the universality of the love of

  360. God and then Christian, you should take this to the grave

  361. with a with a wonderful encouragement.

  362. There is also a specificity taught in the Scriptures in

  363. numerous places that God has uniquely loved his people by

  364. name and called them by name. So there is a particular

  365. protection. There is also the unity of flock

  366. and shepherd. I want you to see this you bunch

  367. of mainly Gentile Christians. Jesus tells the Jewish leaders

  368. who are rejecting him. He says I have other sheep that

  369. are not of this fold. I watch the the definite term I

  370. must bring them. Also they will listen to my

  371. voice. So there will be 1 flock and 1

  372. shepherd. When Jesus and John 15 says I am

  373. the true vine, he is saying there is a false vine.

  374. There's another thing out there claiming to be the vine of God's

  375. blessing. On the Earth.

  376. And it's the at that point, the unbelieving nation of Israel,

  377. and he is saying I am the heir of Abraham.

  378. All of the promises of God are yes and Amen in Christ alone.

  379. And when Gentiles believe in him, they are grafted into him.

  380. We become the branches. And those who he tells the

  381. Jewish people in John 15, those who do not abide in me are cut

  382. off and thrown into the fire. Those who do abide in me and

  383. bear fruit, the Father prunes so that they'll bear more fruit.

  384. But there's one flock, there's one vine, and Christ is the

  385. shepherd. Christ is the vine.

  386. So there is unity. There's the unity of flock and

  387. shepherd that Christ. The book of Ephesians says that

  388. he broke down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile.

  389. Jewish. The special people by race, a

  390. special people, and then the Gentiles, special strangers

  391. marked out for the wrath of God. Paul says Christ broke down that

  392. wall when he was on the cross, and he made the two one new

  393. people, the people of God, the Church of Jesus Christ.

  394. And so if you are in Christ, you have been grafted into the

  395. promises of Abraham. Paul says it this way in

  396. Galatians that it is those who are of faith who are sons of

  397. Abraham, not those who are just physical descendants.

  398. That doesn't matter. Circumcision doesn't matter

  399. anymore. It is faith in Christ that makes

  400. us recipients of all of the promises in the Old Testament.

  401. OK, last thing I want to point out from the text.

  402. And then I want to seek to try and apply it to us.

  403. Is I want to show you. The unity of the Father and the

  404. Son and the Person, and in the purpose and in the work that

  405. Christ comes for. He says I must bring them also

  406. in verse 16. I must bring them also.

  407. They will listen to my voice. There will be 1 flock and 1

  408. shepherd. Verse 17.

  409. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life,

  410. that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me.

  411. I lay it down on my own accord. I have authority to lay it down.

  412. I have authority to take it up again.

  413. This charge I have received from my Father.

  414. Whose plan is it that Christ executes in His life, death and

  415. resurrection? Jesus just told you it's the

  416. plan of the Father. We do not have a confused

  417. Trinitarian deity where the Father is is giving a particular

  418. people to Jesus and then Jesus dies for the whole entire world

  419. trying to save everybody. But come short.

  420. No, we have we we also do not have a a Christ who loves us and

  421. who is a a high priest and then a wrathful Father who hates us

  422. and who's angry all the time that that Christ is always

  423. placating. We have a Father from whom comes

  424. all goodness, all blessing, all gospel, all love, all mercy, and

  425. he pours out to us the person of his Son.

  426. And so Christ comes saying, I'm here to obey my father, and this

  427. is the will of my father, that I wouldn't lose anything of the

  428. people that he's given to me. So there's a unity of the

  429. Father, Son and Holy Spirit in your salvation and in mine.

  430. And if you want homework, go read Ephesians chapter one that

  431. just describes in breathtaking detail the salvation that God

  432. has worked on our behalf. And it breaks down very

  433. marvelously what the Father has done, what the Son has done, and

  434. what the Spirit has done all in unity to save his people.

  435. OK, So what? How would we how do we think

  436. about applying these verses The 1st?

  437. Thing that I would show you to apply is that we need to

  438. understand and refresh this idea that has fallen on hard times in

  439. our culture, and that is that Christ came into the world for

  440. judgment. We're told in other places that

  441. he didn't come to to to condemn the world, but that the world

  442. would be saved through Him. And that's true.

  443. That's true. It is also true that Jesus says

  444. in John 939, Jesus said for judgment, I came into this world

  445. that those who do not see may see, and those who see may

  446. become blind for judgment. I came into this world.

  447. Christ, his person, his work, His word, they, they have always

  448. and they continue to create division, and that division is

  449. judgment. When you, when you.

  450. See Christ as he's offered to you in the gospel, and you say

  451. that's the greatest news I've ever heard, and you run to it.

  452. That is the judgement. It's because he's calling you by

  453. name. Otherwise you would not care.

  454. When you see Christ and you respond like the religious

  455. leaders and you, you constantly naysay him and dismiss him and

  456. ignore him and accuse him of being an evil person.

  457. That is the judgement, that the the way you respond to Christ is

  458. the judgement of what you are. And here's the judgement.

  459. My sheep hear my voice, and they follow me.

  460. Have you heard the voice of Christ?

  461. Are you following Christ? If so, the judgment has been

  462. passed. You are his sheep.

  463. Secondly, we need to remember that there are thieves and

  464. robbers. Who wish to steal and kill and

  465. destroy God's people? If you think about this, if

  466. you're a shepherd. You have to protect your sheep

  467. from. Kind of a lot of things.

  468. First off, you have to. Protect your sheep from hurting

  469. themselves. There's this.

  470. We don't do a lot of audio visual.

  471. Here at our church. But there's this.

  472. It's one of my favorite videos of all time.

  473. The caption reads what Jesus must be like when he's when he's

  474. helping me. And there's this really deep

  475. ditch and all you can see is the leg and the hind.

  476. Quarters of this fluffy sheep sticking out of the ditch and

  477. the shepherd is is like standing over him.

  478. He's gotten by the back leg and he's yanking, yanking, yanking,

  479. pulling, and then all the sudden the sheep comes loose.

  480. Comes flying out of there, the shepherd falls on the ground,

  481. the sheep like lands. He does this like sort of shake

  482. and then he takes 3 or 4 bounces.

  483. Chop, chop, chop. And dives right back into the

  484. ditch. 5 foot down and the shepherd is in the same spot if

  485. you're a shepherd. You have to know that your sheep

  486. will eat things that will kill them.

  487. Your sheep will do dumb things that will kill them.

  488. So you got to protect them from themselves.

  489. You also have to protect them from one another.

  490. You have an aggressive ram That's that's ramming, baby.

  491. Sheep, you have to stop that they can be hurt by outsiders,

  492. so they can hurt themselves. They can be hurt, they can hurt

  493. one another. They can be hurt by the.

  494. Wolves on the outside. And a shepherd wants to protect

  495. his flock because he loves them. So a shepherd is is always I, he

  496. always has eyes on the flock so that he can protect them from

  497. themselves, from one another, from outside influence.

  498. It's very interesting that that thieves want to protect the

  499. flock as well. Thieves want the church to be

  500. gathered. Thieves want to build big

  501. churches that make lots of money because the flock can then be

  502. more easily fleeced and slaughtered.

  503. So as your pastor. Let me, let me exhort you that

  504. there, there are there. Are a lot of voices out there.

  505. A lot of them have open Bibles. A lot of them purport to say

  506. thus saith the Lord. I'm not saying that you should

  507. only exclusively listen to me. Please do not do that thing.

  508. There are much better teachers. There are great men out there

  509. who are faithful stewards of God's Word.

  510. Listen to those guys. But there's a lot of rubbish

  511. that some of you need to turn off forever, right?

  512. Don't listen to to Christian to garbage masquerading as the

  513. Christian faith. It's my job to protect you from

  514. wolves. And as one of my, one of the

  515. guys in our presbytery, the older guys in our presbytery

  516. said it's your job as a shepherd to protect your, your flock from

  517. wolves and podcasts for clothing.

  518. And I thought that was a great way to say that.

  519. So, so turn off the garbage. Thirdly, the Good Shepherd

  520. appoints, and this is going to be painful, He appoints

  521. imperfect under shepherds, OK. We are told that there is one

  522. senior pastor of the church, the chief shepherd, and he appoints

  523. under shepherds to tend his people.

  524. But everybody that he can appoint is an imperfect person,

  525. an imperfect pastor. And I need you to hear this, and

  526. I need you to lean into this, that that pastoring, pastoring a

  527. flock is very similar to. To a husband loving a wife.

  528. You'll notice, gentlemen, that when Paul says.

  529. That a husband you're to love your wives as Christ loved the

  530. church. Sanctify her with the Word.

  531. Lay down your life for her, nourish her, cherish her.

  532. There is no caveat for doing that.

  533. When she's lovely, love her, so long as she's easy to love.

  534. No, it's not there. You have to do that, and I have

  535. to do that. Scratch that.

  536. We get to do that because Christ has commanded US one way or

  537. another. And so in the same way there is

  538. New Testament command at the end of Hebrews.

  539. Where where your? Your commanded congregants are

  540. commanded to obey your leaders as those who are keeping watch

  541. over your souls, as many will give an account.

  542. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning.

  543. You guys do a marvelous job of that.

  544. But I want you to know that sometimes the commands of God to

  545. shepherds are. Are hard to carry out when

  546. there's not cooperation from the flock.

  547. Don't hear a browbeat here. This is more like a.

  548. You guys listen to me, y'all do a a much better job of

  549. responding to shepherding than I do of.

  550. Initiating shepherding. I just want to have.

  551. A conversation with you about how.

  552. We can do this better because this week at presbytery we had

  553. the oldest, most seasoned pastor in our presbytery gave us a list

  554. of about 7 exhortations for what it means to shepherd the flock

  555. of God over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.

  556. And it was really painful. Really painful of of all of the

  557. things. Hey gentlemen, like this is the

  558. standard and every point there were seven of them was an Ouch.

  559. I was going to read them to you and then I walked off and forgot

  560. them at my table. But a couple of the ones that

  561. made me uniquely uncomfortable is he said and he quotes from

  562. the text that was my sermon text for this Sunday.

  563. Christ knows his sheep by name. He has a personal relationship

  564. with all of his sheep And and here's the thing, like.

  565. I have a lot of. Weirdness in my makeup that this

  566. is not an excuse, it's just an explanation.

  567. My family probably have have observed that.

  568. Some of the deepest wounds in the history of my life have been

  569. given to me two minutes after picking up a a phone.

  570. And so anytime my phone rings, I jump out of a chair like I've

  571. been cattle prodded. I hate the phone.

  572. And so the the idea. The idea that if I had a perfect

  573. nightmare of the day. It would be.

  574. I'm just going to call everybody in the church and say, hey

  575. buddy, what do you want to talk about?

  576. Like I, I, I don't, I, I don't want to do that 'cause I don't

  577. think you want to talk to me that bad if I have something to

  578. talk to you about. I love to to sit down and do

  579. coffee and have relationship for sure.

  580. But I'm just really, really uniquely bad at at.

  581. Picking up the. The phone and calling people for

  582. no reason. Now here's what's Here's what.

  583. Happens is if I don't do that on the regular then when I need to

  584. talk to you about something. I get in my own head about it,

  585. like I've got to call them and talk to them about it, but I

  586. haven't talked to them in a while.

  587. And it feels weird. And so I just, it gets

  588. stalemates and all of that. None of that is your fault.

  589. All of that is I'm, I'm telling you that so you can know some

  590. unique ways that you can pray for me because I want to do, I

  591. want to do better. I want to be close enough to you

  592. that I can know what you need as your as your shepherd.

  593. OK, So he, he, he made a statement, he said about, about

  594. prayer. So knowing the flock and then

  595. praying for the flock, pray with and for them, he said.

  596. And, and this old faithful servant of Christ told a bunch

  597. of pastors that needed to hear it.

  598. Gentlemen, prayer is not an accessory to pastoral ministry.

  599. Prayer is pastoral ministry. That's what it's for.

  600. And the reality is, if I don't know you.

  601. If I don't know what you're struggling with, if I don't know

  602. what what you're what's hurting, what, what needs help, I can't

  603. pray as faithfully as I should. I, I, I lift you up.

  604. We pray for you. You are a prayed for

  605. congregation for sure. But I think really early when we

  606. started, when we appointed elders, and at first it was, it

  607. was Aaron and it was Russ and I. And we, we said, OK, we're going

  608. to get into diligence of like, do you remember this?

  609. Like sharing a page where each of us are going to call

  610. everybody on one page. And then, and then Roy got here

  611. and Trey got here. And we, we tried to do this and,

  612. and we would come back weekly to pray for you.

  613. And a lot of what? We would hear is.

  614. Everybody kind of said we were fine.

  615. OK. How can I pray for you, brother?

  616. Oh, we're fine. That's OK, you're not supposed

  617. to like. Make up things that we can be

  618. praying for you, but the here's here's the big ticket.

  619. I want to be. Faithful to pray for you.

  620. In order to. Do that.

  621. I need to know what's going on, OK.

  622. And so I don't know how that happens.

  623. I don't know how we do a better job of that.

  624. It's probably all on me. But I just want you to know if I

  625. call you and it's awkward and it's painful, this is what I'm

  626. aiming at. I'm trying to be faithful.

  627. So the most important question that anybody ever asked me in my

  628. life was when I was 19 or 20 years old was Camilo Ardeela, my

  629. pastor at the time. And he said he goes, if I was

  630. trying to figure out how to provide for family, I was trying

  631. to figure out what to devote myself to with life.

  632. And Camilo said, hey, if God promised to make you excellent

  633. at anything, what would you want to do?

  634. I'd never considered this question.

  635. I would exhort all of you to consider it.

  636. It's a great. Question.

  637. I'd never thought about it before, but I had an immediate

  638. answer and I said I would want to teach.

  639. God's word to God's people. That's what I would want to.

  640. Do if God promised to make me great.

  641. I don't want to be mediocre in that endeavor because I think

  642. something really powerful happens when when men preach to

  643. God's people. But I would want to preach God's

  644. word to God's people. And I'll tell you my answer has

  645. stayed the same with this one edition.

  646. I would that God would give me excellence in the shepherding of

  647. His people, not just the preaching to and at His people.

  648. So if I were going to state it negatively, I want you to hear

  649. me on this, that it's the greatest negatively.

  650. The desire I have for pastoral ministry is that none of you,

  651. none of your marriages, none of your children would fall because

  652. in some way I've been negligent. In the duties that Christ has

  653. called me to. Does that make sense to you?

  654. I don't want you to fail because I didn't help you.

  655. I didn't shepherd you. You needed somebody when you

  656. were wayward to come and grab you and say no.

  657. We're going this. Way and I didn't that's I'm I'm

  658. terrified of that eventuality because Christ cares that much

  659. for for the sheep that he promises.

  660. Me a day of reckoning where he says what did you do?

  661. What did you do? OK.

  662. And so again, I'm, I'm telling you that so that, so that when

  663. we reach out and, and it's, it's inevitable that the, that the

  664. times where you're reached out and you and you have what feels

  665. like a negative or a rebuke or, or a, or a what's a discouraging

  666. word? That's always it's the hardest

  667. season in which to hear them. And it's usually the most

  668. important seasons to hear those things positively.

  669. I would stated this way that when the Good Shepherd calls you

  670. home at the end of your life, that by God's grace I would have

  671. been some ingredient in your life having been well.

  672. Lived to the glory of. God that that.

  673. Think, think about, think about standing.

  674. Before the chief shepherd who loves his sheep and being told

  675. being shown the fruit of your hand in the lives of eternal

  676. souls, that is, that is what I'm after.

  677. That's what I I long to be. Great at that, and I'm not, and

  678. so I'm asking you to. To pray for me, or at least I'm

  679. not what I want to be. So there are many aspects of

  680. pastoral ministry that I'm that I'm far too timid about.

  681. And I'm just asking you to pray for me and be patient with me,

  682. even though I have extended your patience far beyond the means

  683. of, of normal wear and tear. Because I've been your pastor

  684. for 17 years now, for better or for worse.

  685. And so, for better or for worse, your Chief Shepherd has made me

  686. your under Shepherd. And it is one of the great joys

  687. of my life to be able, Sunday after Sunday, to open the Word

  688. of God with you and to marvel at the mercy.

  689. Of Christ with you I love I love being your pastor to to not just

  690. teach the word with you not just marvel at Christ and ideas with

  691. you, but also to to to break bread with you to know the state

  692. of your lives to be. Praying for you.

  693. By God's grace, I have baptized a whole lot of you people and I

  694. have offered the Lord's Table to all of you on many occasions,

  695. and it is a great gift to be a part of the body of Christ with

  696. you. So brothers and sisters, I

  697. believe that Christ himself, the Good Shepherd, the Chief

  698. Shepherd, that he sent me to remind you again and again

  699. through word and through sacrament all the days of your

  700. life, that he loves you and that his body was broken for you, and

  701. that his blood was shed for the forgiveness of your sins, and

  702. that he intends to feed you on himself.

  703. And so, brothers and sisters, the Shepherd is calling you each

  704. by name at this moment. Don't be thrown by the fact that

  705. he's using my mouth to do it. Follow Christ as I bid you come

  706. and welcome to King Jesus. Let me pray for us, Lord.

  707. We. We remember that you are the

  708. Good Shepherd, that you lay down your life for the sheep.

  709. And Sunday after Sunday we come to the Lord's Table, where we

  710. remember and where we participate in the broken body

  711. and the shed blood of Christ in this divine mystery that is the

  712. Lord's Table. And so Lord I.

  713. Pray for these your sheep. I pray for the elders of our

  714. church. I pray that we would, that we

  715. would accurately reflect to them the care and the bravery, the

  716. courage, the the love that the Chief Shepherd has for them.

  717. God, would you take us up and would you love them well through

  718. us? And we pray, Lord, for, for, for

  719. thus for all of us, that we would all receive your

  720. shepherding well, that we would treasure it as a gift that you

  721. give. And so, Lord, would you take

  722. this moment as we, as we break the bread and as we enjoy the

  723. cup together. Would you draw near to us?

  724. Would you shepherd us in these things?

  725. Would you give to each sheep what he or she needs most this

  726. morning at your table? Would you feed us?

  727. Would you draw near? We ask it in Christ's.

  728. Name Amen.
