There is a fine Line Between Wisdom and Foolishness

Have you ever done something that seemed smart at the time — only to realize later how foolish it really was? Maybe it was buying something expensive you didn’t need, sending that text you shouldn’t have, or making a decision without asking for advice. We’ve all had those “What was I thinking?” moments.

I’ve had my share of those moments too. Last week, I thought I’d save some money and replace my own brakes. I grew up having to work on my car. It was 89’ Ford Probe. We will come back to it later. Like many other things I know enough to get myself in trouble. Last week I needed to get some new tires and ended up needing to some other front end parts. But they also told me I needed new brakes. Well I already had brakes so last Sunday I decided to replace the pads and rotors. It seemed smart — until I broke a bolt, bought a new caliper, and had to call Steve to bail me out. What I thought was smart turned into a mess. That’s how foolishness often works — it looks good in the moment, but it always costs us later. That small moment reminds me how often we do the same thing in life — we trust our own judgment instead of God’s wisdom, and it ends up costing us.

Last week we the wisdom of humility. We said, the path down is the path up in the Kingdom of God. Humility is not weakness; it’s the strength to stoop so that others can rise. “You can’t be full of God if you’re full of yourself.” The call to humility is not to think less of yourself, but to make more room for God to work through you.

The book of Proverbs draws a sharp contrast between wisdom and foolishness and it’s not just as a matter of intelligence, but of the heart. Wisdom is living in reverence for God, while foolishness is living as if God doesn’t matter.

Proverbs 14 is like a mirror — it will help us see the danger of foolishness and the beauty of walking in wisdom. A foolish life leads to destruction, but a wise life builds stability, honor, and peace.

The Fool Disregards Wisdom and Walks Toward Destruction.

If you have your bibles turn with me to Proverbs 14. If you don’t have a bible we have some on the back table. If you are looking for Proverbs its about half way in your bible, it comes right after Psalms and right before Ecclesiastes.

Proverbs 14:1

Foolishness isn’t just about making mistakes — it’s about ignoring God’s truth.

A fool tears down what God is trying to build. The fool rejects correction.

Proverbs 14:9

The fool laughs at sin. They reject correction. The fool trusts in their own heart

Proverbs 14:12

Even though it may seem right our hearts will deceive us. Jeremiah tells us why.

Jeremiah 17:9

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

It’s popular today for people to say, “just follow your heart.” But friends God says this is what the fool does. Your heart is deceitful and what may seem right in your own eyes will end in death. The fool trusts in their own heart

The fool lives for the moment and ignores consequences.

The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.

Think of someone building a house on sand. It looks fine for a while — maybe even impressive — but the foundation is weak. When life’s storms hit, it collapses. That’s what foolishness does — it promises quick results, but ends in ruin.

Friends let me ask you, where in your life are you building on sand? Where are you making decisions without seeking God’s wisdom? The fool rejects correction, trust their own heart instead of God’s truth, and they live for the moment.

So, we’ve seen what the fool does — they reject God’s truth and live for the moment. But Proverbs 14 doesn’t stop there. It also shows us what foolishness looks like in everyday life — in our attitudes, our words, and our actions.

Fools act like they’re invincible. They take sin lightly. They rush into things without thinking. They are hotheaded and yet they feel secure. The fool has an Attitude: Pride and Carelessness and every time we ignore correction, we’re walking the path of the fool.

The fool’s speech: is Reckless and Destructive in their Words

Proverbs 14:3

The fool talks too much, too soon, too harshly. Words become weapons instead of tools. But the wise guard their tongue — they speak life, not destruction. The fool’s speech: Reckless and Destructive Words. Our words reveal whether wisdom or foolishness rules our hearts.

The fool’s Actions: Are Impulsive and Self-Serving

Proverbs 14:17

The fool acts first and thinks later. They don’t pause, pray, or plan.

Their impulsive and self-serving actions hurt relationships, reputations, and often their own peace.

When I was in high school, I had an 89 ford probe and I drove that thing wide open everywhere I went. I loved driving on Creek Rd in EC. It was curvy and I liked to see how fast I could go. One night it had been raining and I took a curve to fast and ended up in one of the big ditches. Now to tell you how crappy this car was, I had to pick up the keys off the passengers floor board to turn the car off. Foolishness feels thrilling for a moment, but like I did that night it always crashes.

So, ask yourself:

• Am I quick to speak, slow to listen?

• Do I make choices without praying first?

• Is pride or anger driving my reactions?

Foolishness isn’t about ignorance — it’s about independence from God.

The fool has an Attitude of Pride and Carelessness, their speech is Reckless and Destructive and their actions Are Impulsive and Self-Serving.

But here is the Contrast — Wisdom Brings Life, Foolishness Brings Loss

Proverbs 14:8

Proverbs 14:27

Wisdom brings stability, peace, and blessing — not because your life is perfect, but because it’s rooted in God’s truth.

The fool is deceived — living for appearance, pleasure, or pride — and it costs them dearly. But the wise consider their steps, listen to God, and walk in His ways.

Right before Jeremiah’s warning about our deceitful hearts look what he says.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. 8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

The wise are rooted in God’s truth. They trust in Him and are like a tree planted by the water and they don’t fear or worry they just keep right on bearing fruit even when things get tough.

As we look at our Daily Lives:

• Wisdom builds; foolishness destroys.

• Wisdom listens; foolishness argues.

• Wisdom fears God; foolishness forgets God.

Proverbs 14 invites us to examine ourselves:

• Are there foolish patterns you’ve ignored?

• Do your words build up or tear down?

• Are we walking by God’s wisdom or our own?

Choose wisdom. Seek it daily in God’s Word. We as Journey Church want to be like the Bereans in Acts 17 who examined scripture daily. Seek wisdom daily in God’s Word. Surround yourself with wise people. Invite correction and counsel.

Proverbs 14:15

Be thoughtful. Be teachable. Be humble.

Wisdom isn’t about knowing everything — it’s about trusting the One who does.

In Matthew 7 Jesus uses the wise and foolish builder to illustrate the wise and foolish person.

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Everyone builds a house. What will your life be built on? The rock or the sand?

The only difference between the wise and the fool is that wise puts into practice Jesus’ words.

Everyone will go through the storm. But what you have built your life on will determine whether your life will stand or not.

Choose wisdom. Seek it daily in God’s Word. We grow by studying the Bible together, increasing our desire to know the inspired and inerrant Word of God but not just studying it but humbly obeying its truth in everyday life. The fool knew Jesus’ words and chose not to put them into practice. Be grounded in God’s truth and put into practice. Surround yourself with wise people. Invite correction and counsel. Life Groups are a great place to find wise people who will walk side by side with you and hold your accountable, they’ll correct and encourage you. Choose wisdom live your life in reverence for God to please Him.

The Ultimate Wisdom

Remember how I thought I could handle my brakes myself? I ended up with a mess I couldn’t fix and had to call someone who knew better. That’s the story of all of us, isn’t it? We try to run life our own way and it falls apart. But wisdom begins when we call on the One who knows better — Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God. The greatest act of wisdom is surrendering your life to Jesus Christ — the very embodiment of God’s wisdom.

1 Corinthians 1:24 – “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

If foolishness leads to death, wisdom leads to life — and that life is found in Jesus.

Don’t settle for the path that seems right. Choose the path that is right — the way of wisdom, the way of life, the way of Jesus.
