The Kind of Wisdom That Outlives Us Proverbs 30-31

We are coming to the end of our study of Proverbs. The book of Proverbs has been around for 3,000 years. It didn’t change in the last 13 weeks but hopefully you did. The book of Proverbs is 31 chapters I want to encourage you maybe take one month and read a chapter a day. How fitting as we just celebrated our 6th birthday as Journey Church and we look at all God has still in store for us that we finish up Proverbs by looking at wisdom that will outlive us.

We all will leave an impact or a legacy- whether intentional or unintentional we all will leave a legacy. What will be said of you when you die? I want to encourage you this week, and no it won’t make it happen any sooner I promise. But write your own eulogies. Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People says that highly effective people “Beginning with the end in mind.” Paul wrote his own eulogy in 2 Timothy 4:6.

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Write you own eulogy. But the challenge then is to live your life with that end in mind.

Billy Graham said, “the legacy we leave is not just in our possessions but in the quality of our lives…of character and faith.”

So today as we finish our study of Proverbs we are going to see true wisdom shapes our character, our words, our priorities and our legacy. Wisdom isn’t just what we know, it’s who we become. Remember wisdom is knowledge applied.

1. Wisdom begins with Humility

If you have your bibles turn with me to Proverbs 30. If you are looking for Proverbs its about half way in your bible, it comes right after Psalms and right before Ecclesiastes.

We have seen time and time again through proverbs. But it’s key, wisdom begins with humility. Agur shows us the attitude we need to have in order to start to find wisdom. Agur admits his own limitations, “ I am weary…I don’t have human understanding.” The truth is that we can’t grow wise if we think we already are.

Paul reiterates this truth in Romans. Paul says we shouldn’t think to highly of ourselves, but with sober judgment in accordance with the faith God has given us.

Pride keeps us from acknowledging our limitations. I know it all. I can do it on my own. Pride keeps us from acknowledging our need for others and for God. Pride stops us from growth.

This week ask yourself and ask your circle of wise counsel, “what areas are pride blocking wisdom in my life?” this week ask God to make you teachable. You can’t grow wise if you think you already are.

2. Wisdom Guards Our Integrity.

Every word of God proves true, it’s flawless. Agur admits his own limitations and seeks wisdom. And he finds it in God’s word. God’s word is perfect, don’t add to it, twist, or ignore it. Instead obey it.

We grow by studying the Bible together, increasing our desire to know the inspired and inerrant Word of God and humbly obeying its truth in everyday life.

Adding to God’s word, twisting it to fit our feelings or flat out ignoring it leads to distortion and in the end destruction.

Wisdom leads us to stand on the truth of God’s word instead of cultures’ opinions. Build your convictions on scripture, not feelings.

Let the truth of God’s word shape your decisions. God’s word is perfect- don’t add to it, twist it or ignore it. Just do what it says and it will guard your integrity.

3. Wisdom Shapes our desires.

We can’t trust our desires because they come from our deceitful hearts, but wisdom will begins to reshape our desires. True wisdom shapes our desires by seeking balance and not extremes.

Agur here has one of the most honest prayers.

• Keep me truthful. Keep falsehood and lies from me.

• Guard my heart from poverty and riches. Agur wants neither lack nor abundance to pull him away from God.

What desire is pulling you off center? Is it wanting more stuff, recognition, comfort? Or once again pride? Let wisdom shape your desires and make Agur’s prayers yours. “Lord, keep me truthful. Guard my heart from extremes.”

4. Wisdom confronts a corrupt culture.

A foolish generation destroys itself- wisdom stand apart and confronts corruption.

All through scripture we see what happens when foolishness guides society. Go read Judges or the end of 2 Kings. Agur says that a generation that: curses their parents, thinks they are pure but aren’t, is arrogant and devours the poor will in the end destroy itself.

Paul describes exactly what Agur warned about—a society without wisdom collapses under the weight of its own foolishness.

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

A foolish generation will destroy itself, and at some point God gives them over to their sinful desires and it shows their sexual impurity worshiping and serving created things rather than the Creator God. They are given over to their depraved mind and do what shouldn’t be done.

But even through we live in a foolish generation we can be a voice of truth and compassion, Confronting a corrupt culture with God’s wisdom. So don’t be shaped by the culture instead help shape it through godly wisdom.

5. Wisdom speaks for the vulnerable.

Wise people use their influence for people without it. Wise people speak up for, defending the rights of the poor and needy. Wisdom isn’t silent when the poor, needy, destitute are being taken advantage of. No they step in, step up and step out.

As Journey Church we follow the example of Jesus who sacrificed self for the needy, hurting and lost. We put our faith into action by mobilizing to help our community and world, even when called to sacrifice and suffer to care for their needs over our own.

This is what Jesus has done for us and when we are wise this is what we do for the needy and vulnerable. So this week who is someone who is hurting that you can advocate for, speak up for and sacrifice self to meet put and meet their needs over your own?

6. Wisdom Leaves a legacy of godliness.

The Proverbs 31 woman isn’t just about womanhood- she is a picture of wisdom lived out. This is what wisdom looks like in action—faithfulness at home, integrity at work, generosity in the community, and fear of the Lord in the heart.

Wisdom is shown in the impacts of her life. In her home and work. Her husband has full confidence in her. She provides for her family. She works hard getting up early. But her impacts aren’t just felt with her family and co-workers, they are felt in her community.

She opens her arms to the poor. Again wisdom speaks for the vulnerable. Her family too calls her blessed for she speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction. She fears the Lord.

As we close our study of Proverbs, I want to remind you: this book has stood for 3,000 years. It didn’t change these last 13 weeks—but I pray you have. Wisdom is not just knowledge, but its knowledge applied. It’s not just what we know… it’s who we’re becoming. And every one of us is becoming someone. Every one of us is leaving a legacy—whether we realize it or not.

That’s why I encouraged you to write your own eulogy this week. Not to be morbid, but to begin with the end in mind. To let the future shape your present. Because one day, somebody will stand and speak about your life. And they won’t talk about what you owned… they will talk about who you were.

And that’s exactly what Proverbs has been forming in us. Let’s remember:

• Wisdom begins with humility — God, make us teachable.

• Wisdom guards our integrity — God, help us stand on Your Word.

• Wisdom shapes our desires — God, give us hearts centered on You.

• Wisdom confronts a corrupt culture — God, make us light in a dark world.

• Wisdom speaks for the vulnerable — God, move us to action for those in need.

• Wisdom leaves a legacy of godliness — God, help us build what outlasts us.

This is the kind of wisdom that can shape your family for generations.

This is the kind of wisdom that can impact your workplace, your friendships, your marriage, and this community long after we are gone.

This is the kind of wisdom that builds a church that will still be reaching people well beyond our lifetime.

How is your life pointing people to Jesus?

What legacy of faith are you choosing today?

Your legacy doesn’t begin someday. It doesn’t start at your funeral.

It starts now—today—one wise choice at a time.

So let’s be people who live the long view.

Let’s be people who fear the Lord, walk in wisdom, love honestly, serve generously, speak truth boldly, and leave behind a legacy of godliness that echoes into eternity.

Because wisdom’s impact doesn’t end with us—it lives through us.
