Have to see it to believe it John 4:43-54

We live in a “show me” world.

Before we buy it—we read reviews.

Before we trust it—we Google it.

Before we believe it—we want proof.

And a lot of people treat God the same way.

“God, if you show me… then I’ll believe.”

“If you fix this… then I’ll trust you.”

But what if God says—“Trust Me first… then you’ll see.” That’s what the man we will meet today hears.

So far in John’s gospel he has laid out for us that Jesus is the Christ or Messiah, the Son of God. And that no one has seen God the Father but if we look at Jesus see we can see God. We have seen some of the signs to prove that. We have seen that Jesus is all knowing, with Nicodemus, and the Samaritan woman. He knew everything about them. We have seen Him turn water into wine, we have seen Jesus show is authority in the temple, but now we are going to see a new side of Jesus. He is going to start healing the sick.

Here’s what this story is going to show us— Real faith trusts Jesus’ word before it sees Jesus’ work… and it moves.

1. FAITH THAT SEEKS JESUS

John 4:43-47

John 4:43–47

Jesus left Samaria and headed up to Galilee. The people of Galilee receive Him because they had seen the signs that He had done while He was in Jerusalem.

Jesus comes back to Cana—the place where He turned water into wine. Cana is directly north of Nazareth, Jesus’ old stomping grounds. There was a royal official from Capernaum, whose son was sick to the point of death. This guy was part of the kings court so I’m sure that he had the best doctors in the area, and yet they weren’t able to help. He had resources, status, power. None of it worked.

There’s nothing that will make you feel more helpless than a sick child. You would trade places with them in a second. You would spend anything… go anywhere… do whatever it takes. That’s where this man is. This isn’t casual faith—this is desperate faith.

He had heard about Jesus and the things that He had done. He knew that Jesus was his only hope of saving his son. This man didn’t send a message…

No “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi…” He didn’t text… didn’t email…

He went. He found Jesus and begged Him to come and heal his son.

What do we run to before we run to Jesus? Is Jesus your first response or your last resort?

When your anxiety rises, do you scroll or do pray?

When your marriage is struggling do you complain, or do you seek God?

When parenting stress increases, do you try to control everything or do surrender it to God?

2. This man had FAITH THAT TRUSTS JESUS’ WORD

John 4:48-50

John 4:48–50

Jesus said that you people must see signs and wonders to believe. Again the man begs Jesus to come, and Jesus tells Him to Go your son lives. Jesus doesn’t go with him. And if we’re honest—that’s not what he wanted. He didn’t come for a word… he came for Jesus to go.

He wanted: Jesus’ presence.

Jesus gave: His word

Sometimes Jesus gives you a word… instead of a miracle— because He’s trying to grow your faith, not just fix your situation.

Jesus says “Go, your son will live.”

And the man believed what Jesus said. He took Jesus at His word. He trusted that what Jesus said was true.

Do we trust Jesus without visible results?

Maybe you’ve been praying—but nothing has changed.

Or you’re trying to follow God—but life got harder.

Or you stepped out in faith—and it didn’t go how you planned.

Do you trust what Jesus said… or only what you can see?

What did the man do after he believed? He went, he acted, his trust led him to action.

The man didn’t argue. He didn’t demand proof. He didn’t wait for confirmation.

He went. This is what real faith looks like— trusting Jesus’ word before you see Jesus’ work… and moving anyway.

Faith is not just something you feel—it’s something you follow.

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Faith is a conviction, a trust, a belief in what we cannot physically see.

Our faith is in God. We cannot physically see Him, but we trust that God’s Word is true. Now even though faith is conviction of things not seen, we can see Jesus through the Bible.

What did the Man whose son was sick do? He acted on his trust in what Jesus said. Our faith in what Jesus says should lead us to action. It should lead us to go.

James 2:17

James 2:17

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James tells us that if we don’t act, we don’t go, we don’t work, then our faith our trust is useless, it’s dead. It is because of our faith in Jesus that we work. It is not because of our works that we have faith.

Then James says something convicting.

James 2:19

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

Faith that doesn’t move… isn’t faith. It’s just agreement.

The royal official has his faith confirmed.

John 4:51-54

John 4:51–54

This man turned around and walked 20 miles home… without seeing a single change. Every mile… he had a choice— ‘Do I really believe what Jesus said… or not?’”

That wasn’t just his story… that’s the kind of faith we’re called to live out every day. That’s the kind of faith we’re called to— trusting His word before we see His work.

What does this kind of faith actually look like in our lives?

1. TRUST HIS WORD IN YOUR DAILY LIFE

You don’t have to understand everything God is doing… you just have to trust what He has said.

When Scripture says forgive → forgive (even if they don’t deserve it)

When Scripture says wait → wait (even when you want answers now)

When Scripture says love your enemies → love (even when they hurt you deeply)

When Scripture says pray → pray (even when you don’t feel anything)

When Scripture says don’t worry → trust (even when life feels out of control)

When Scripture says be content → be content (even when you want more)

When Scripture says give → give (even when it’s tight)

When Scripture says speak truth → speak it (even when it costs you)

When Scripture says serve others → serve (even when you’re tired)

When Scripture says deny yourself → say no (even when it’s hard)

When Scripture says confess sin → confess (even when it’s uncomfortable)

When Scripture says walk in obedience → obey (even when it doesn’t make sense)

When Scripture says trust His timing → trust (even when He feels late)

When Scripture says rejoice always → rejoice (even in difficult seasons)

When Scripture says go → go (even when it’s uncomfortable)

You don’t have to understand everything God is doing… you just have to trust what He has said.

2. STOP WAITING FOR PERFECT CONDITIONS

Some of us are waiting to obey God until life makes sense.

• “I’ll serve when I have more time”

• “I’ll share my faith when I feel ready”

• “I’ll trust God when things calm down”

If you wait until you see everything clearly… you’ll never walk by faith.

3. MONDAY–SATURDAY FAITH

Is your faith visible outside of Sunday?

Workplace integrity

Do you have integrity in your job? Do people know that you are trustworthy? Do they know that you will keep your word? Do they know that you will do the right thing even if it’s unseen?

Speaking about Jesus

Are you one that points others to Jesus? We want to be a people that helps everyone discover their relationship with Jesus. Are you going out and building authentic relationships with the lost? Are you praying for and looking for opportunities to share the gospel with others?

Responding differently under stress

How do you respond in stress? Is it like the rest of the world? Do you respond with worry and anxiety or do you respond with trust?

Loving difficult people

How do you deal with difficult people? Is with ill will, animosity or with love?

Is your faith visible outside of Sunday?

Some people are still saying— “I’ll believe when I see enough proof.”

But Jesus already gave the proof— through His life, His cross, and His resurrection.

After Jesus’ resurrection some had seen Jesus alive. But Thomas doubted. He said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

So the risen Jesus meets Thomas and tells him to put his finger where the nails were. Thomas immediately believed and this is what Jesus said.

John 20:29

“Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Royal official had his faith confirmed. His servants meet him on the way home. His boy was living! So he and his whole household believed.

The question isn’t—Do you believe Jesus can? Even demons believe that.

The real question is— Do you trust Him enough to act on what He said?

Are you taking Him at His word? Or are you waiting to see it first?

Where is Jesus asking you to trust Him right now?

Real faith doesn’t say, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.’

Real faith says— ‘I believe it… so I’m going.’

You’ve heard this story today… and maybe you see yourself in it.

The royal official came to Jesus desperate… He didn’t have it all together… he just knew he needed Jesus. And that’s where real faith begins.

Some of you are here today and you’ve been saying— “I’ll believe when I see enough…” “I’ll trust God when He proves Himself…”

But today, Jesus is saying to you the same thing He said to that man—“Trust Me… go… believe My word.”

Listen— Jesus has already given you the proof.

He lived the life you couldn’t live.

He died on the cross for your sin.

He rose again so you could have new life.

The question isn’t—Can Jesus save you? The question is—Will you trust Him?

Not later.

Not when life settles down.

Not when you understand everything.

Right now.

The Bible says if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead— you will be saved. The Bible also says repent and baptized for the forgiveness of your sin and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

So today—

If you’re ready to stop waiting to see…

If you’re ready to trust Him…

If you’re ready to put your faith in Jesus…

I want to invite you to respond.

And just like that official…You may not see everything change instantly…But you can walk out of here knowing—Jesus has given you life.

And now the call is the same:

Go.

Trust His word.

Follow Him.

Because real faith doesn’t wait to see… It believes—and it goes.
