Loving Grace in Action - July 13, 2025

It is my privilege to invite you to today's sermon podcast.

I have made the Apostle Paul's prayer request my own.

When he states in Ephesians 6, 19, pray also for me, that whenever I open my

mouth, the words may be given to me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.

May today's sermon come alive to you and aid you in your understanding of God's plan for your life.

Praise the Lord. Thank you, Linda, for that medley of grace.

Let's praise the Lord for Linda again. Man, that was beautiful.

Several times this morning, I've

been prompted just to stop singing and listen, and you all sound great.

The praise that's coming from your heart to the ear of God, just beautiful.

And behind each one of those praises that you're singing, there's a story.

There's a way that you've experienced the grace of God. the grace of God,

that undeserved favor, that undeserved gift of love, of forgiveness,

of friendship that God has offered to you.

Something none of us have earned, no matter how good we've tried to be.

Well, we know that God just loves us and He wants to pour this out because of

His great love, His great mercy for us, and of course, because of His great grace.

And today, we're going to wrap this series up.

I know someone's saying hallelujah right now in their heart and mind.

It's been a month or two, but, well, we could spend probably a year on grace.

We won't do it. I know there's other things that the Lord wants me to preach on.

But, you know, I just want you to know believers in Jesus Christ,

they're people of grace.

And I think it's about high time we let other people know because the church

has caught a bad reputation along the way. because we haven't been so grace-filled at times.

Now, there's a time and a place that we've got to take a stand for those things

that are righteous and those things that are good.

But even in that taking a stand for what's good and for what's right,

there's still grace that is to be given.

And so today, as we talk about loving grace in action, I just hope that you're excited.

I hope that you take my challenge, my call to action at the end of the sermon

to keep this grace growing, not just individually,

but within a group to where you all can experience grace, where we all can experience

grace and really share that with others.

You know, when we think about the continuous work of God's grace,

it's not just a one-time thing.

It's not just a one-time thing that God did in your heart, in your life,

at an altar of prayer, when you said a sinner's prayer.

But I hope you've caught the concept that even before you made that choice to follow Jesus,

that God was already working in the midst to bring you to a point to where you

could hear the gospel message, where you could be saved, where you could be

transformed in your heart and your life.

And that even after that point, you just didn't have your fire insurance that

you could bust out anytime anyone asks you if you were saved.

But that you took what Jesus Christ did in you with the saving grace,

and you've continued to make those grace investments in your life and to grow.

And to meet the different challenges that life has with the grace that God has

given you, with studying His Word, with attending a worship gathering like this this morning.

Was studying the Bible in groups and praying together and on and on and on.

We talked about the means of grace a few weeks ago.

But I hope that you've taken this grace investment that God has placed in you,

and now you're taking and you're growing in that so much that you share with

other people the grace of God and the gifts and the strengths that He's invested

in you that He's made you with.

You know, grace, really, it's unique to Christianity, I think.

At least there's probably some religion out there, but when we think about the concept of grace,

I think it stands out big and proud in a humble sense amongst all the world

religions that God himself would look to people who could never even reach up

to his heights and experience the love that he has to offer.

Other religions, you have to earn your way to God. You have to do pendants.

You have to make your life miserable so that God can have pity on you and reach

down and do something with you.

But God, in his grace, he saw us, poor and wretched and broken and cut off from him.

And he sent his only begotten son to us, his only one of a kind. There's only one Jesus.

And he came and he lived a holy life and he died on the cross for you and for me.

Oh, how deep the grace of God is. This, again, God's free gift of love,

of forgiveness, of friendship with him.

And, you know, when we look in Acts, which is where we'll be today,

Acts chapter 4, but we considered everything that led up to this point in the

Acts 4 · chapter mention

passage we're going to look at today.

It's amazing. And we see that Jesus had ascended to heaven and the disciples

had to pick another one to fall in line and replace Judas who went out and hanged himself.

We see as we go through in chapter 2 that God kept his promise.

Jesus kept his promise to send the Comforter, to send the Holy Spirit to the

disciples, to be present with them, to empower them.

And the same Holy Spirit that was given by the grace of God,

we still experience today. We still can be filled with today.

How powerful is that? In chapter 2, Peter speaks up after this great Pentecost event.

And he preaches boldly. And as a result of that, thousands of people come to Christ.

And they continued in that fellowship day after day, meeting in the temple courts.

Well, the religious leaders at the time were kind of getting upset because of

what happened in chapter 3, where Peter heals a lame man, a man that wasn't

able to walk. And Peter preaches.

And then when we get to chapter 4, the Sanhedrin, the religious governing body

said, we're not going to have any more of this.

Let's drag those guys in. And so they kind of arrested them,

brought them before them and said, okay, you guys have got to answer for what's going on.

And as you read through chapter 4, all the way up to verse 23,

we see that Peter and John were arrested, appeared before the Sanhedrin,

warned not to speak the name Jesus any longer.

Don't do what you've been doing. They didn't have an answer for the healing

that took place. They couldn't find fault in that.

But yet they just warned them as much as they could. Well, that's where we pick

it up here in verse 23 of Acts chapter 4.

Acts 4 · chapter mention

And we'll read through verse 31. I know it's quite lengthy, but if you'd like

to stand, I invite you to now. Let's honor the word of the Lord.

In verse 23, the scripture says, On their release, Peter and John went back

to their own people, And reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.

Sovereign Lord, they said, you made the heavens and the earth and the sea and

everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant David.

Why do the nations rage and the people's plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up.

The rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

Indeed, Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people

of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

They did what your power and your will had decided beforehand should happen.

Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

Stretch out your hand and heal and perform signs and wonders through the name

of your holy servant, Jesus.

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken,

and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Let's pray. Father, thank you. Thank you for this passage of Scripture here.

Lord, inspired by the same Holy Spirit it's talking about.

Lord, we just pray that today we just might experience your Holy Spirit as you

work in our hearts as we hear the word, as we're challenged today.

Father, if you feel so moved to shake this place, Lord, we're ready to receive your spirit anew again.

And God, we just ask in the mighty name of Jesus that what happens in here will

not be kept in here, but we'll take it with us through the rest of this week,

through the rest of this year, through the rest of our life.

Lord, work in our hearts, we pray today in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thank you. You can be seated.

What we see today is a witness.

A testimony, if you will, of God's loving grace in action.

We've talked about grace so much. We're saying about grace so much.

But we've got to realize that it's meant for something that we do.

It's meant for the attitudes we have, for sure, for what we've received from

God, for perhaps what we share and what we should share with others.

But for us, we have got to make sure that we work together to share God's grace with others.

And so, as we've read through this today, I just want you to see God's grace

in action and what can happen in

your own life when you fully embrace that undeserved favor of God for you.

First of all, this morning, I want you to consider their grace group.

As we've read through the scripture and I've explained a little bit about the

circumstances that Peter and John had been arrested, dragged before the religious governing body.

And some of the same people that were in this body were some of the same people

that convicted Christ, and we're in that sham proceedings that went on there.

And so they're hearing now, they're seeing the results of what happened because

of the religious leader's decision to go against the Messiah, to go against Christ.

And what we see is the same ministry they tried to stop is the same ministry that's continuing.

They didn't stop the healings, God working just because Jesus was crucified

and dead and buried. Now we know Jesus rose again.

And not only that, he ascended to heaven and empowered his disciples with the

Holy Spirit of God to do the same things that Jesus was doing.

And healing this lame man who was over 40 years old wasn't someone that was

just going to get better on their own.

He'd been lame for quite a while, and they were upset about that.

Well, these believers here, Peter and John, they could have gone anywhere they

wanted in Jerusalem now after they left the Sanhedrin. They were free.

They were freed up. They were just told, hey, don't say nothing more about this Jesus.

Don't mention his name. Don't talk about him anymore. He just needs to kind

of go away according to what they thought.

But it says again in verse 23, Peter and John went back to their own people.

They went back to this group of people, this group of people that loved them

and supported them, this group of people that prayed for them,

this group of people, same group of people that we read in Acts chapter 2,

Acts 2 · chapter mention

that's continued to grow because God continued to work and God continued to

work in and through these people.

Peter and John, where else would they go? They went back to the ones where they had the support.

You see, what they found in this grace group was they had that emotional support,

that spiritual support that they needed.

They didn't run down to cheers and meet their buddies down at the pub or something like that.

No, they gathered together with those who knew them most closely.

They found encouragement there.

Knowing that your brother and their sister is praying for you is a powerful statement.

So powerful. We know that they had accountability there.

Now, I know we've kind of got off with accountability on the wrong foot sometimes,

because a lot of times what we see is accountability is having a checklist and

someone watching you see when you're going to mess up.

Watching you see, oh, you're not perfect. Aha, you did this on this day.

And then call them out for it. And while that might be a part of it,

maybe a small part of it, I think accountability goes even much more deeper than that.

It's just not making sure you're towing the line or you're walking the line,

but accountability is, is I love you, you're my brother, you're my sister,

and I wanna help you be the best person that you can be in Christ.

And so I'm gonna come alongside it. If there's sin, yeah, I'm gonna call it

out on you, but not in a judgmental sort of way. I'm going to call it out so

we can see it corrected and you move on to the greater thing that God wants you to do.

Hey, there's sin that happens.

We're all tempted. Temptation continues.

But when we come together, if I know that my sin is going to make you stumble,

then I can't do that because I love you.

And you won't let me do that because you love me. And you're going to point

out, point it out and say, watch out. Don't step right there.

Don't take that step. You're lacking faith in that.

And, you know, there's accountability here. You'll see later on as you read

through the book of Acts, which I, of course, encourage you to do,

when you get to chapter 5, you can see some accountability coming.

There's a man, a couple, Ananias and Sapphira. They get caught up in selling

their property and giving the money to the poor, which is great,

or giving their money for the commonality of God's people.

But there was sin that entered in, and there was grace that was also given at

that time, but the grace was rejected, and that's another sermon for another

time. In chapter 5, you can read that.

But they found accountability here.

They found an accounting or an inviting group of people that encouraged vulnerability.

They said, hey, open up and bear your soul. That's hard to do.

I mean, I don't keep any secrets or try not to because my kids would tell on me anyway.

So what's the use? I don't want to be closed off and a liar.

We're supposed to be vulnerable. And it's hard for us to be vulnerable.

It's hard for us to admit the failures or shortcomings.

But if we can do it in a trusted group of people that God's grace reigns supreme,

then where else in the world are you going to be able to do that?

Where else in the world can you say, I need you to pray for me? I'm really struggling.

Where else can you come down in front of a group of 100 or 200 people and just

bear your heart out to God and have your brother or sister just place a hand

on your shoulder or just pray for you, pray around you?

I mean, that's what the disciples, Peter and John, that's what they went back to.

They had their partners in ministry right there.

So as we're considering their grace group, I would ask you, what's your grace group?

Hopefully because you're here this morning, this is the larger group of your grace group.

And I hope in each one of these things, you can find the same things Peter and

John discovered in their group.

But I also want you to see their action plan.

Consider Peter and John's action plan, what they did. You know,

when you look at this, this was unfair.

Peter and John were called by Jesus to follow him?

Peter and John were there and experienced failures? Well, at least Peter did.

He denied Christ, and I think the scripture alludes that one of them ran away

naked when Jesus was, well, at least his cloak was gone, when Jesus was arrested.

We think of the failures. They had a right to be upset. I mean,

they could have called a board meeting together and said, What are we going to do?

How are we going to come up with a strategy to have the best way to avoid a

further negative attention by the Sanhedrin?

They could have come together and say, we need to be more careful about how

we're sharing Jesus and how we're healing people.

They could have decided that, boy, the Sanhedrin just treated them horribly.

So we're going to do a protest. We're going to make signs and we're going to

march down the street and say how horrible the religious leaders are and hold our signs up.

They could have done that. Nothing wrong with that.

They could have made sure that their mistreatment was made known to all.

You know, they could have just decided, forget this, man.

If every time we heal someone in the name of Jesus, we're going to get dragged

before the Sanhedrin, it's just not worth it. Come on, let's go back to fishing.

Let's just stop what we've been doing and let's just go back to what we know.

But they didn't do that. that was not part of their action plan.

And I'm grateful because they left a good plan.

What happens when you face this kind of trouble, when you face even persecution?

You could complain, you could give up, you could form a committee,

you could make your own action plan, but they had a spiritual action plan.

And you see where it started?

First of all, it started in prayer. It says they gathered in prayer.

Anytime we're facing something, we don't know what to do or we have a major

decision to make. Well, we got to go to prayer. We got to talk to the Father.

God, what would you have me to do? Lord, how do I proceed in this?

And that's exactly, exactly in verse 24. When they heard this,

they raised their voices together in prayer to God.

Secondly, what did they do in their spiritual action plan? Well,

they expressed confidence in God's sovereignty.

They acknowledged the sovereignty of God, that God was still in control.

Even though they were dragged before the Sanhedrin, had to talk before them on what happened.

They had a chance to share the good news with the Sanhedrin. They were warned.

Even in spite of all this, they knew that God was still in control.

That God was still going to work all things together for the good of those who

are called, who love him.

Peter and John had that confidence. The disciples had that confidence,

and this was not going to stop the movement of God.

It was not going to stop it at all. We see in verse 24 also that they praised God.

They recounted God's incredible power to create the heavens and the earth and everything in them.

Well, so often we just go to prayer, but we forget about the praise aspect of it.

Yeah, we do the praising on Sunday morning. And I'm saying, yeah,

we do, because we gather together from every walk of life where we've come from.

But we have to pair praise and prayer together.

Those are the two things that help to get us by.

You pray, you pour your heart out to God, but it's in the praise that we recognize,

what I just said a few minutes ago, that God is sovereign and we cry out our praises to him.

Lord, thank you for your grace. Thank you for your mercy. Thank you for the

cross. God, you are mighty. You are awesome.

And I said to praise that God began to work, and they were reminded of who God

is and who they were in relation to God.

It didn't stop just with prayer and praise and with knowing and having faith

and confidence in God, but they went to the scripture, praised the Lord,

Scripture inspired by the Holy Spirit, and they recited that Scripture together.

They recited those verses that were appropriate at this time.

And I love what they are. Why do the nations rage and people's plot in vain?

The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord

and against his anointed one.

Boy, we've got to make sure that the Scripture they call the Bible,

it's called the sword of the Spirit.

We've got to make sure we know how to wield the sword.

Wielding the sword is to speak the truth, is to cut to the truth.

When we see what they did, they were expressing their confidence in the Holy Scriptures.

Are you getting this action plan together here? You see, the fifth element was their testimony.

It goes on to say in verse 27 that they recounted how Pontius Pilate and how

Herod, how they plotted together against Jesus.

They look back at what man had done, but also what God had done in the midst of that.

Folks, when you go through a hard time, when you're going through persecution,

and when you come together with a group, whether it's a Sunday school class,

a prayer group, a Bible study, no matter what it is, you got to remember that

God has worked probably similarly with some of those people in your group that's

working on you right now.

That God has led you through something that you could share that experience

with someone else and help get them through it as well.

See, their spiritual action plan was vital to their continuance and who God

wanted them to be and what God was doing in them.

And that brings me to the next thing. If we look back and consider their prayer

requests, we'll go to verse 29 and 30.

They could have prayed, God, bring fire down and destroy the religious leaders.

God, wipe them Sanhedrin off the map.

Would have been a lot easier, maybe. But they didn't pray for that.

Remember, they were in a grace group.

They could have prayed for the persecutions to cease, for the fight against

the enemy just to be fulfilled right there in that moment, but they didn't.

They didn't pray for the persecution to stop.

Isn't it interesting when you talk to some missionaries, perhaps you had a chance

to talk to Jubilee, that even in the midst of great persecution,

Some he shared here from this pulpit,

That they don't stop But they ask for prayers of the saints To continue to pray for them,

in doing so, they don't want to get out of the persecution. They want to hold up under it.

So the disciples, Peter and John and the rest that were gathered,

they didn't pray for that to stop.

They didn't pray that God would change the mission on them and say,

God, can you lead us out of Jerusalem to somewhere more friendly?

They didn't ask the mission field to change. They didn't ask for God to change his calling.

What'd they do? They prayed for two things. First of all, they prayed for renewed

strength to preach the gospel message of Jesus with great boldness.

Isn't that great? I love this part. Sanhedrin, you will not speak the name of Jesus any longer.

All right. Lord, give me boldness to proclaim the name of Jesus. I love that.

Man, when we're threatened with something that seems so severe,

to stand up full of the Spirit with the boldness of God and say,

God, give me that boldness to preach anyway.

When we preach the name of Jesus, when we share the name of Jesus with others, it has an effect.

That's what they prayed for. Secondly, what did they pray?

Verse 30, they asked that God would work in miraculous ways to magnify the name of Jesus.

Remember that same name they were told not to preach in any longer?

That incredible prayer, God continue to work.

Again, stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the

name of your holy servant, Jesus.

It wasn't in Peter's name. It wasn't in John's name.

It was focusing the attention on the name of Jesus.

When they did that, God did incredible things. Miraculous signs to heal.

As you continue through the book of Acts, you'll see all those.

See the incredible ways in which God moved.

But this was their prayer. They didn't pray judgment down upon those that were opposing them.

They didn't pray to be taken out of the situation.

They didn't pray for the situation to even change. They just prayed for renewed strength.

And they prayed for God to do the miracles that he did before.

And so what was the result of all that? If we look in verse 31,

the result of their loving grace in action.

It says, After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken,

and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

God answered their prayer, people.

God answered what they were desiring in their hearts in agreement with God's plan.

Boy, it's like it was Pentecost again. The whole place was shaken. Woo!

Can you imagine? I know we're not in California, but Idaho has earthquakes too.

Maybe not in our neck of the woods so much, but to have the place shaken,

not from an earthquake, but from the presence of the power of God, His Holy Spirit.

A sign right there that God was present. They had known what that was like being

in the upper room in the day of Pentecost.

But there are many more believers, I should say, at this time,

and they got to experience this.

We think that they received a new infilling of the Holy Spirit of God.

They got what they prayed for, that renewed strength that comes from the Holy Spirit of God.

They got that boldness that comes from God's Holy Spirit dwelling and working

within us to do what God has gifted us to do and given us the strength to do.

And what'd they do with that?

What'd they do with that? Again, look at the scripture. They spoke the word of God boldly.

I was watching on my phone the other night when I was trying to go to sleep,

and it was these little real videos.

I know the church put some out in like Facebook and YouTube and stuff,

but this was another one.

And it was just a guy with a microphone and he would go around And it wasn't

a big one like this, just a little one He said, he would just walk down the

street and said Hey, what do you think of Jesus?

Hey, what do you think of Jesus? And he tried to get people to talk to him about Jesus,

And I gotta say, the majority of people said something like this As they were

walking, oh, I have no time to talk about that Hey, what do you think of Jesus? Jesus.

Let's not start that. And they would keep walking. And over and over again,

the people would just shut him down and wouldn't want to talk anything about Jesus.

But every once in a while, they would show a guy who was face lit up when he was asked about Jesus.

And he wasn't afraid to boldly proclaim that Jesus is the Christ.

He's the Messiah. He's the Savior of the whole world.

And let me tell you what he did in my life, how he transformed my life.

And those are beautiful testimonies that we got to hear on that little tiny,

you know, three-minute video I was watching.

Folks, we can't let people's disinterest stop us from asking or sharing boldly

the person of Jesus, the Word of God.

Now, there's a way to do it. You don't go take your Bible and smack it on the

head with it. That's probably not a very friendly way to do that.

Even with our words, maybe sometimes we do that.

But honestly, to pray that God would put someone in our place that we could

share Jesus with, even just so much as, hey, here's what Jesus did in my life.

Here's what Jesus did for me.

We've got to boldly pray that God will give us someone every day that we can talk to about Jesus.

I told you, I drive back and forth to Palmer to the church here every week, or day, pretty much.

And you see the wheat, it looks like it's ready to be harvested.

I'm like, Lord, this is an example every day of what I need to pray.

You need workers in the harvest field. You need workers for souls.

And that doesn't happen if we're too afraid, if we don't ask the Holy Spirit

to fill us, so we can boldly proclaim Jesus to others, that Jesus still is the

answer, still is the one who could meet their needs.

Want to challenge you to do that. So you see kind of the pattern here,

and I'll close with this.

I want you to commit yourself or recommit yourself to a grace group.

It's a very broad category, okay?

It could be your Sunday school class. It can be a life group,

men's, women's, whatever.

It could be a group that meets on Wednesday night, Sunday morning, Sunday night.

It's a prayer group maybe that you just meet with, but you got to meet with

others. And here's why I say this.

When you meet with others, you're strengthened.

God's grace is on all those people in that group, and you pray for one another.

You ask one another how your week went. You ask, how can I pray for you?

You study the scripture. You pray together on other things.

And I hope in each one of those groups, what we pray for is,

Lord, send us someone that we could tell Jesus about.

And in doing so, we're filled up. Boy, we're like the fat glutton.

It's kind of like this bear walking out here. He's got long legs, too.

We walk out of those group just ready. Lord, okay, where are they at?

You're just so filled with grace.

And then maybe by the next time you come around to your group,

you're just a little bit more skinnier because you poured out all that grace

to God, ministering and sharing his word with others.

Now you need to be filled up again. Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit.

Now, I want to tell you, you don't have to wait a whole week to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God.

With his grace, hopefully every day you're in the word. Every day you're just getting filled up.

But I got to tell you, nothing beats a group together where you can be vulnerable,

where you can be accountable to one another, where you can grow in grace.

As the scripture says, iron sharpens iron, where you could sharpen one another.

When we do that, God moves in incredible ways.

You can see after chapter four, especially at the end there,

what do they do next? They start sharing all their stuff.

People have lands, they sell them so that no one was in need.

Well, what an amazing statement that no one in their group had a need because

they all shared everything in common.

Now that's not communism. Don't get mixed up here, okay?

That's not an example of communism.

It's an example of God's people working together to live out who Jesus wanted them to be.

There wasn't any government mandates that you have to take this property and

do it. None of that stuff.

It's an example of how God wants us to live, that God has given our stuff,

not just so we can have stuff, but so we can share it with those in me.

I'll never forget my first Nazarene pastor, Pastor Rod. He had this little Ford Ranger pickup.

He never took the keys out of it. He just left them there.

He left $20 in the ashtray there with a bunch of coins too. And I said,

Pastor Rod, we're going to Fresno.

You want to leave them keys in the car? You want to leave that money there?

He said, ah, maybe someone needs it. They can borrow it for a while.

I might get a new one one of these days. Just like he keeps saying he's going

to retire one of these days and he's still pastoring there.

You know, not to be so tied to our stuff that we don't lose sight of the people that need it.

Living like this, filled with the Spirit of God, knowing everything's going

to be okay. My needs are going to be met.

How powerful that is. Folks, that's the example of God's living grace working

in us, and we live that out too.

You know, we think about this whole sermon series.

I pray that you've experienced God's grace in a little bit new way,

maybe a little bit greater understanding of how that undeserved favor works

in your heart and in your life.

And if so, I'll just ask you, well, commit to sharing that with someone this week, would you?

Share how God's grace has impacted your life. Let me pray for us.

And I know we've got a closing song and a benediction.

Lord, thank you for today. Thank you, God, that your loving grace just doesn't

sit in our hearts and get stale.

But Lord, when it's put into action, it has a transformative effect,

not just on us, the bearers of grace, of your grace, God, but on those that

we encounter and those we interact with.

And Lord, we know that we're praying for healing for some people.

And God, we pray that your grace would heal them.

Lord, those physical hurts, those emotional traumas, Lord, all these different

things, maybe even some that we're carrying here this morning.

Lord, may we just submit those to you. And God, to see you work in miraculous

ways. Father, we want to magnify the name of Jesus.

We want the name of Christ to be exalted.

And so, Lord, this morning, just move on our hearts as we make a commitment

to you, Lord, to be part of a group, a grace group, Lord, where we can grow,

Lord, where your grace can flourish.

Father, we thank you. Thank you so much for Jesus and what he did on the cross

to make the way for us to be with you.

Father, it's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
