The High Calling of God - September 7, 2025

It is my privilege to invite you to today's sermon podcast.

I have made the Apostle Paul's prayer request my own.

When he states in Ephesians 6, 19, pray also for me, that whenever I open my

mouth, the words may be given to me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.

May today's sermon come alive to you and aid you in your understanding of God's plan for your life.

His benefits. Amen. Amen. He's

blessed us in so many ways, and we do not want to forget his benefits.

I just reflect upon my life, and many of you know this fact,

some that you may not, but I've been married to my beautiful wife,

Robin, for 47 years. A blessing.

We have four wonderful daughters and four wonderful son-in-laws and 12 grandchildren,

and I'm only 35 years old.

Well let's see about 35 years ago

I was 35 something like

that but I do know that I'm a blessed man and God

has blessed me in so many ways and so I thought on today by

just beginning with a little bit of show and tell and with a message in it and

so I can see on the back what they have up there already and so I just wanted

to just show a couple of my grandkids here a little bit and I could show them

all by the way I got three grandsons here today and their dad you want to stand for me today? Yes.

Yeah. Fine, fine young men, fine young athletes. You may be seated.

They all have wrestled and I could put a picture up there and tell a story about

everyone, but I thought I'd just pick on the youngest one.

Oh, we're going to start there. Okay. We're going to start with Ryan.

We will go back to the other one. Okay.

All right. As I, as I was wrestling with my grandkids, this is Ryan Martindale.

You remember him from here. This is when he was just a little guy.

I remember when we were wrestling together, he had some great success.

I remember the first year out, I think he wrestled 11 times and he won 10.

But I remember when I discovered his love for wrestling, it wasn't in the ring,

but we were over in Parma at a softball game.

My brother's boy was in baseball. He was pitching over there against Parma.

So I met my brother over there and I took Ryan with me.

While I was watching the softball game, I look over to my right.

And I looked down there and I see Ryan wrestling this little boy and they're really going at it.

I can tell they weren't fighting. They weren't mad. They're just wrestling hard.

And Ryan, man, he was really going at it.

But I noticed that the little boy must've had some experience because he got

just a little bit ahead of Ryan.

But Ryan came over to me afterwards. And he said to me, Papa,

he said, when I wrestle, he said, my hands get like this.

I looked at him, and I went home and told his Mia. I said, he's the one. He's going to wrestle.

He's got the fire in him. You can know the moves, but you better have some fire

in you, you know. And he had some fire in him.

And you want to go back to the other picture? Just another one right where I

recognize a little fire.

My grandsons are great wrestlers, all three of these guys, good football players too.

But anyway, this is Cooper. He's here now. He's a lot bigger now.

Yeah, and he's the third one there. But when he was little, he was on the mat,

and I remember wrestling. And he, you know, one thing about wrestlers,

when you're teaching them, you can teach them the moves, but they don't know how to connect the dots.

They don't really know how to put it together. And so you got to,

you're, I'm done on the math. I always be a coaching badge.

I get down there with them and I'd say, okay, now put a half in,

put a half in, turn them fending, you know, like that.

And sometimes a little guy would cry and Ryan or Cooper would say, why is he crying?

I said, I don't know, but he's fine. He'll be just fine.

You just keep on winning. You do what I tell you.

Matter of fact, just to redeem myself, one of the little kids he made cry was

on the other team, and I went over and coached with him a little bit prior,

and he won the next match.

But I remember Cooper telling me when he was little, he said,

Mama says, quit wrestling.

But Papa said, throw them to the mat.

I said, that's right, Cooper. You just keep throwing them to the mat.

He threw a lot of kids to the mat, and so did Tyler and Aiden as well.

And a good wrestler, but you've got to have that fire in you.

I think that's Kelly Noe in the back. Oh, yeah, I remember Henry.

He's got fire in him, too. He's a good wrestler. I've watched him wrestle. Good wrestler.

But anyway, I think about that, that wrestling and that fire in the belly,

that excitement they had when they got out there, you know.

And I helped them with the moves. I helped them with when to execute them.

But the truth of it is when it was within them to win.

And I look at that of Christians today and I wonder, is there a zeal in them, that excitement to win?

And the Apostle Paul says that we run toward the mark for the prize of the high

calling of God in Christ Jesus.

And in this passage, I want to ask you to turn with me today to Philippians chapter 3.

Philippians 3 · chapter mention

And one of the things that you're going to hear all through this is in this

passage of Scripture, everything I studied about it.

The Apostle Paul, listen to this, the Apostle Paul saw the Christian as an athlete of Christ.

Do you realize that? In this passage of scripture, he's using athletic language

in here, and he wants us to run with excellence as we run for Christ with strength,

a little fire of the Holy Spirit within us.

Yes, and I believe today we need that today in the world in which we live today.

We better have some excitement, and I'll tell you what, I'm going on 70,

and the preach has not left me yet.

Any chance I get to preach, I have not retired from preaching.

I'll never retire from preaching.

I retired from pastoring, but I'm going to continue to share the gospel to the day I die.

It must be in us. It must be in us. I do not retire as a Christian.

I believe that we are Christian athletes.

Good to see you standing today. And so I keep my professor happy and he's in

heaven now. I don't know if he's looking down, but I better tell you a couple

more times. He said, tell him three times.

Yeah. Philippians chapter three, beginning with verse one. You guys are quick.

Philippians three, verse one. C.S. Coles. Remember some of you probably knew C.S.

Coles. He's a, one of the best preachers I knew. I loved his preaching class. He got excited.

Got me excited. Yes.

Philippians 3. And I've got my wife's Bible today, so help me.

My Bible is being rebound again. It's falling apart again, so it's a little

smaller print. So bear with me today.

It says, finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again,

and it is a safeguard for you.

Watch out for those dogs, those who do evil, those who are mutilators of the

flesh, for it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of

God, who glory in the Christ Jesus,

and who put no confidence in the flesh.

Though I myself have reason for such confidence.

If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more.

Circumcised on the eighth day of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin,

and a Hebrew of the Hebrews in regard to the law of Pharisee as far as zeal

of persecuting the church.

It is for legalistic righteousness and hauntingness.

But whatever it was to my prophet, I now consider lost for the sake of Christ.

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness

of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.

I consider them rubbish that I may regain Christ and be found in him,

not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the flaw,

but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness of that comes from God and is by faith.

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of

sharing in the suffering and becoming like him in death, and so somehow to attain

to the resurrection from the dead.

Now, not that I have already obtained to this or have already been made perfect,

but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.

But one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining forward to what

is ahead, I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called

me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Father, today I pray that we love you, Lord, that we're excited about you,

and those around us know that we're excited about you, Lord.

And I pray as the Apostle Paul said, we're straining ahead to win the prize

of the high calling of Christ Jesus.

It's in his name we pray. Amen.

I love this passage of scripture. And one of the things I see in here,

Apostle Paul says, but one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead.

Now, it appears that the Apostle Paul can't count. You see what he says?

For one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is

ahead. That seems like two things.

But the truth of it is, you can't do one without the other. You can't do one

unless you forget the other.

You can't strain ahead unless you forget what is behind. You'll continually

be held back. And the Apostle Paul, he knew this.

The Apostle Paul, when he talks about forgetting, literally means to neglect

or avoid, forget it, he said.

And the truth of it is, I know that you and I, one thing that we want is that we want freedom.

We want freedom in Christ. We don't want to be anchored by our past sins. Amen.

We don't want to be held back. We want to be able to do all that we can for

Jesus and not held back by the things of the past.

The fact is there are things in your past that can rob you of joy and prohibit

spiritual growth, our past sins.

And I love the psalmist in Psalms 25, 7. Many of you could probably quote it.

He says that, remember me not.

He's speaking to God. Remember me not according to the sins of my youth.

Or my rebellious ways, O God, but remember me according to your love.

That's a prayer, isn't it?

Amen. And that's how our God remembers us. You know, when we ask for forgiveness

of sin, he casts our sins as far as the east is from the west,

and he knows them no more.

No, he knows them no more. We have to be free to the past.

We got to forget what is behind and press forward to what God wants us to do.

He does not want us to be held back and tied down by where we were in the past.

The Apostle Paul mentioned it up here about persecuting the church.

He was zealous about that.

The Apostle Paul, do you know what he used to be called?

Saul. He even had a different name. He was not a Christian. He was not a follower

of Jesus Christ. He was Jewish.

He was a Pharisee. He was very zealous about what he did, but you know what he was doing?

He was out killing Christians.

He held the coats of Stephen, a saint of the Lord, while they stoned him.

He witnessed the words of Stephen as they stoned him.

And Stephen looked up and saw the Lord as they were stoning him and said,

Father, forgive them. They know not what they do.

How could he stand there and watch Stephen be stoned?

I always loved the witness of Stephen. But the apostle Paul used to be called

Saul, and he was an enemy of the church. He was the enemy of Christians.

If he knew you existed, he would get an edict to come to your church and kill you.

He had a radical, radical past, a terrible past, a horrible past.

He did, but he was on the road to Damascus, and all of a sudden,

the Spirit of the Lord, the light of the Lord shone down and struck him down.

And Jesus said, why do you persecute me, Saul?

And Saul at that time had a great repentance. We find that he could not even see for a while.

God sent him to Ananias to go there for him to pray for him.

And Ananias told the Lord, in case God had forgotten, do you know who this is, God?

He would kill me. He tries to kill Christians.

And God said, Paul will learn. Saul will learn by the things he suffers.

And the truth of it is, we find at that time that Saul became repentant of his

sin and became a powerful believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.

But I wonder how many times when he was trying to do the will of the Lord,

that Satan didn't come back and haunt him with all the horrible things he did in his past.

I imagine Satan said, don't forget who you are. You're the killer of Christians.

You held the coats of those even stoned Stephen.

You know how Satan comes and reminds us of things of the past?

And when we're forgiven, what we need to say is, in Jesus' name, get behind me, Satan.

God has cast my sins as far as the east is from the west, and he holds them no more.

I'm convinced that there are a lot of Christians that can't go forward in their

walk with God because they have never really dealt with their past.

Paul says, the one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead.

I think about being weighed down, and an example of being weighed down,

it wasn't of sin, but being weighed down was that of young David.

I love the story of David, and those of you who know me here,

I could talk all day about David, and what a wonderful saying to the Lord.

He was the apple of God's eye.

But he was, the Israelites and

the Philistines were in battle one day and they'd drawn up battle lines.

And David, he was back with the sheep. His brothers were already there in the front lines in battle.

And it was a big stalemate because Goliath would come out and taunt them and

say, is there anybody here that would come out and fight me?

If you defeat me, we will be your servants. If I defeat you, you will be slaves to us.

And they were all just shaking in their boots, including David's big brothers.

But one day, we find that David's dad said, you know what?

I have some bread fixed for your brothers because they have to eat on the battle

line. You take this out, do them.

So young David, he comes out to the battle line, sees his brother,

brings the bread, and he couldn't help but hear Goliath taunting the Israelite nation.

And David said, who is this uncircumcised Philistine that defies the armies

of the living God? Oh, I like that.

It's like my grandson's getting ready for wrestling. Bring him on.

And David was ready for him. His brothers did not like that of David, what he was doing.

You just mind your own business. Who do you think you are, you arrogant little guy?

You know, they taunted him. But David, he couldn't stand it.

He could hear that enemy taunting the enemy, taunting God's people.

And he said, I can defeat them. I can defeat him.

And somebody brought him to the king and told him, he said, you're just a boy.

And he said, I can fight him. I can defeat him. He said, when I was tending

sheep, the lion and the bear came up and tried to take my sheep.

I took it from them. I grabbed them by the hair and I struck them down and killed them.

And I'll do the same to this Philistine.

Man, I like that kind of spirit. That's the kind of spirit that God has within us. You realize that?

God did not give us a spirit of timidity,

That's what Paul told Timothy. Timothy, I think, must have been a little timid.

God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but he gave us a spirit of power,

of love, and a sound mind.

That's our God. He said to Joshua, haven't I command you to be strong and courageous?

Be not terrified and be not discouraged, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

God is calling us today.

But Saul, King Saul, this is not Saul that Apostle Paul was.

This is King Saul earlier in history, said to David, well, if you're going to

fight him, let me help you out a little bit.

So he puts all of his armor on him.

And David said, I can't fight in this. I can't fight in this. It weighs me down.

It weighs me down. And I think that's how sometimes if we don't forget what

is behind, we don't deal with our sin and give it to God.

We don't rebuke the evil one in the name of Jesus.

We can't press on. I can't fight him in this, David said.

So he took it off. David said, I'll fight him.

So David, he gets his sling and he walks all the way to Goliath.

He picks up some stones and picked up five stones, it says.

And some said, why did he pick up five stones if he was so good?

The truth of it is he didn't know if Goliath had some brothers or not.

He'll just take care of them all. It doesn't say that. That's my theory.

That's in the spirit of David, the spirit of God. Bring them on. I'll take care of them.

If God's sending me out there, I can do it. If God calls you,

I can do it. And the same thing with you.

If God calls you, you can do it.

I believe that. If God calls you, you can do it.

So David, he goes down, he gets his stones, and he puts them in his sling,

and he's running to the battle line.

I love that. It doesn't say he creeps up on old Goliath. And Goliath,

he's, why, who is this? You're sitting on a boy. Am I a dog?

David runs to the battle line, runs up to that big nine-foot giant who has a steel sword.

And David, all he has is a sling, slings that sword and strikes him right in

the middle of the forehead and kills him and he drops to the ground.

Yes. And then David went over. David did not have a sword, but the big sword

that Saul was boasting about, David went over and pulled it out and cut his head off with it.

And then he kept Saul's sword, took it back to his tent.

David was victorious that day because of God.

The spirit of God dwelt within him. He was not fearful.

God called him. He would do it. When that of the bear and the lion raised their

head to strike a sheep, he grabbed them by the hair and struck them down and killed them.

David was a man of God. He was filled with the spirit of God.

And I'm going to tell you today, if God calls you, you can do it.

Another example, Moses. I got to watch that clock.

Moses, when God called him at the burning bush to deliver the Israelite nation,

what did Moses say to God?

I'm slow of speech. I can't do it. Maybe you could send somebody else.

And you know what God said to Moses when he tried to bring excuses to him?

He said, I made your mouth and I can do anything I want with it.

Yeah. So try excuses on God.

Yeah. If God calls you, you can do it.

Forget what is behind. The apostle Paul had to do that.

He said, the one thing I do is forgetting what is behind and I strain towards what is ahead.

Now, in that passage of scripture, the word talks about a leaning.

It's the kind of leaning that's pressing forward hard. It's the guy who's on

the track field and he sees the ribbon there.

You ever seen them running hard? When they got their chest out,

they're trying to hit that ribbon first. They're running hard.

Apostle Paul said that, forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead.

And it says in 14, I press towards the mark for the prize. I like that.

For the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus.

How many of you today, you don't have to raise your hands, but how many of you

feel like you're straining to be a Christian athlete, to be all that you can be for Christ?

Yeah. Yeah. I remember in boot camp.

There was a guy, he was a tall, strapping guy. They asked him to be our leader.

And you know what his words were?

I can't do it. I can't do it.

What? Step out there and do it.

Yeah. They found somebody else.

They found a friend of mine that came into boot camp with me. He did it.

Yeah. Wow. If God is calling you, you can do it.

Yeah. God will empower you for greater works of service, straining the head,

straining the head. I'm putting my all into it.

I'm not a half-hearted Christian. I want to be all that I can be for God.

I press towards the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

And Paul says he has not obtained it yet. He's still pressing towards the mark.

He's heaven bound. Paul is driving. Paul is running for the goal.

He's all out for Jesus. He's a runner that wants to hit the tapes.

His eyes are fixed on the goal.

He begins with his relationship with God and wants to carry it on and become

a stronger Christian, a stronger friend of God.

And I want to say to you today, with your intensity as you're running forward,

I want to say to you, run to God. Be a God chaser.

Run to God. Seek God first, not things. And Jesus said in Matthew 6,

33, seek first the kingdom of God and all his righteousness and all these things

of life will be added unto you as well. Do not worry about tomorrow.

Tomorrow shall worry about the things of itself. Each day has enough problems of its own.

And it's true. Amen. But most people are seeking after things.

And then if I have time left, I'll give it to God. No, that's not what it said.

It said, seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and he'll take care of all these other things. Don't worry about it.

God knows what you need even before you ask, but your priority is to seek him

first. You need to run hard after God.

And I say to you, I love the part out of Matthew 12, 30.

It says, Love the Lord thy God with all the heart, soul, mind, and Mark adds strength.

I believe your physicalness needs to be involved.

Love the Lord thy God with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength.

I think we need to have the things in God in mind. We need to run after God.

We need to chase after God.

James 4, it says, come near to God and he will come near to you.

Wow, what a goal to meet with a living God. How'd you like to have a burning

bush experience like Moses did?

Tell you what, you can have one. You cut time out.

You get up in the morning, wherever it is, where you're not going to be interrupted by anyone.

You begin to look into the word. You begin to quote scripture with God,

along God. I'm talking about speaking God.

When you're quoting scripture, you're speaking God.

So I would say to you in running after God, memorize scripture.

Some say, I can't memorize.

But don't raise your hand again. I don't want to embarrass anybody.

But the truth of it is, I bet you there's many of us here that can quote lines from movies.

But you can't quote a verse of God.

Yes, you can quote all kinds of lines. And I do with my friends.

Me and Les, we've seen Western movies. We do the quotes. But if that's all I

can quote, I'm in trouble.

I think we need to be memorizing the word. I remember when I was just a young

teenager, I was in Sunday school class, and they were talking about the end times.

And it comes out of Peter. That's where that comes from. Second Peter,

the full of it says, God is not slow in keeping his promise.

They're questioning about when is he coming back?

And so Peter says, God's not slow in keeping his promise. As some understand

slowness, he's patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish,

but for everyone to come to repentance.

So it's about the second coming, that passage of scripture, as you can read it in second Peter.

And I remember just as a teenager in Sunday school class, Ooh,

I kind of lit a fire under me. The Lord's return.

Am I ready? Am I ready? Am I all that I can be for God? Wow.

And I started memorizing scripture. They used to talk to us when I was a kid.

What happens if you go into a communist country? You know what they do?

They take your Bibles away.

They kill you for just a page of the Bible.

Yes. I thought, I'm going to memorize it in case they take my Bible away.

And some say, well, I got the internet.

Well, what happens if they shoot your satellite down and you don't have internet

and that's all you got? Do you actually have a Bible? Do you know the word of God?

I'm talking about getting serious about the things of God. And it's not hard to memorize really.

I always used to do it on three by five card before I had a phone.

I'd just write the verse out.

And every day I'd memorize three or four words up to the first comma.

Next day I'd add to it. I'd add to it. I'm still adding to it.

I've memorized several passages since I retired and I'm getting to be an old

guy. I got more gray hair than most of you. And I can memorize.

You can too. Memorize the word. Here's the latest one I memorized. I love it.

And this is kind of my vision. For everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.

How then can they call upon the one they have not believed in?

And how can they believe in the one in whom they have not heard?

And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written,

how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.

That's my retirement verse.

Yeah. Memorize the word of God. Know it frontwards and backwards.

Preach God. When you begin your prayer time, you start. Oh, I got several passages

of scripture I quote every day to the Lord as I begin.

Cause in scripture, I use the Lord's prayer as my outline.

Hallowed be thy name. I stop right there and quote a lot of scripture to the Lord that I know.

And I like to break it down scripture for God, the father, God,

the son, and God, the Holy spirit.

I like to quote it to him. I like to run it, run through my ears.

I need to be reminded every day.

Yes. Run to God. Get excited about God. Oh, I love my grandsons. Oh, I'm excited.

Papa says, mom says quit wrestling, but Papa says, throw them to the mat.

I love that. I love that spirit. Memorize the word, come near to God,

run to God through Jesus Christ.

Jesus made it clear to his disciples that he was the only way to God.

In John 14, 6, I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no man cometh to the Father but by me.

Yes. Run to God through Jesus Christ. Proclaim it. Proclaim it loudly.

Yes, we want to know Christ. And I think I want to underscore today that we

need to know Christ and not know about Christ.

Those that have heard me preach many times have heard this before.

And she's passed on now, but I always said that I know the Queen of England, but I don't know her.

I just know of her. I don't know her. I'm not a citizen of hers. She has no power over me.

And so a lot of you today are name droppers. We talk about movie stars.

We talk about sports athletes as if we know them.

You don't know them. You never even met them.

Yeah. And some people today, they can talk a good talk when it comes to God

and Jesus, but they've never met him.

Jesus said, behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone opened the door,

I will come in and eat with him and he with me.

I pray today for my family members and friends today. May they hear your voice.

May they hear your knock, Jesus.

Keep knocking. May they invite you in.

When they come to invite Jesus Christ into their heart, they know God.

They don't really know God until they invite Jesus in.

Run to God through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.

I don't know about you, but I am concerned these are the last days.

In the verse in 2 Timothy 3, 5, it says, in the last days.

Now, I like this one speaks to me more than any other because the other ones

speak about the world and how they are.

But it says in Scripture, this is speaking to the Christian.

It says, in the last days, they will have a form of godliness.

But they deny the power of God.

You know, when I was here, I had, they're not here now, but there was some people

that did not like I had prayers, the key to power.

They had thrown the baby out with a wash. And it's true. Christians have abused power.

But the truth of it is we need God's power to be born again.

We need God's power to be a good witness. We need God's power.

Amen, there's the power. They woke me up.

We need power of God. Prayer is the key to power. We need power today.

And in scripture, it tells us that. And I love what Jesus said to the disciples

about tearing in Jerusalem.

This is what he said. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon

you to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, to the ends of the earth, at Mountain View.

Wherever I preach, I always pray that I add that on to that verse.

I pray that today for here, Lord, may your power come upon you that I could

be your witnesses at Mountain View today.

We need the power of God. And I shared already what Paul told Timothy.

God did not give us a spirit of timidity. Because a lot of times,

oh, I can't do that. Yes, you can.

By the power of God, you can do it. Not in your own strength,

but you call upon the power of God.

Whatever God's calling, you can do

it. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power.

Oh, that's in there. That's in the Bible. A spirit of love and sound mind.

Or I think it says self-discipline is another translation, maybe the NIVs.

Anyway, God wants us to have his power. So we run to God through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, we do it. By the power of the Holy Spirit.

We need God's power to help us. We need to embrace the high calling of God and

that we can do God's good, his pleasing, and his holy will.

And God has something in mind already for you.

And I'm not going to go into this. I'm going to bring it to a close here,

but Ephesians, we know Ephesians 2, 8, 9, for saved by grace through faith and

not of works as any man should boast.

But most Christians don't know 10, for we are God's workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do.

Let me ask you, do you know your good work?

It may be you're a home builder in the name of Jesus. Maybe you're working in

the police force for the name of Jesus, but God has called you to do that.

But do you know what God's called you to do?

It may be in the church, may be out of the church, may be both.

Everybody needs a job. Rob and I raised four daughters.

They were born into our family. They didn't get into our family by works,

but they were born into the family. But whenever we had a family work day, guess what?

They're all that are working. And I think the same way God looks at his children.

Hey, you're a part of the family.

Find what you're called to do and do it. Yeah, I believe in that.
