Eagle Christians 1

House, we're going to serve the Lord.

Joshua 24, 15.

That's what you want to do.

So, you teach them in speech, you teach them in signs.

And here's the third thing.

Deuteronomy 6.

You teach them in surroundings.

You are to make sure your children are in the right surroundings to be able to soar like an eagle.

You need to know who their friends are.

You need to know the places they're going.

You need to know all that.

I was so involved in my daughter's and son's life, they were thought I was Dick Tracy in their life.

Is that not true, Susan?

Oh, it was terrible.

No, it wasn't terrible.

It was great.

You know what?

I involved myself with them.

I got involved.

We had basketball courts at my house.

We had swimming pools at my house.

All for one reason.

I wanted to control the surroundings of my children.

To bring them up and the nurture and admonition of God.

So that's my charge to you parents.

To make your children eagle Christians.

Let's pray.

Father, we love you.

We thank you for each and every one of these families here that are represented and these precious children.

God, grow them up to be champions and eagles for your honor and your glory in Jesus' name.

I want you to turn with me in your Bibles this morning to Isaiah chapter 40, verse 31, and then we're going to go to 1 Samuel 17.

Isaiah 40:31

1 Samuel 17.

Today and tomorrow.

Today and tomorrow.

Today and next week, I'm going to be bringing a message on eagle Christians.

And I was, in fact, when Benji asked me, he said, What are you doing?

I said, Well, I really want to, God's laid on my heart to just talk about an eagle Christian.

We don't hear that kind of challenge anymore.

And so today and next week, we're going to look at probably one of the greatest eagle Christians in the Bible.

David, a man after God's own heart.

Who, hey, not only was he a man after God's own heart, Acts 13, 22, but Acts 13, verse 36, that David completed God's mission for his life.

Acts 13:36

And then he died.

So he lived that eagle life.

And by the way, it was not all pretty.

He had his ups and downs, just like we all do.

Life is not always lived on the mountaintop.

Can I get an amen?

In fact, I'm convinced after 40 plus years of ministering and serving the Lord, listen to me.

I am convinced you spend more days in the valley than you do on the mountaintop.

Which makes the mountaintop more enjoyable.

It really does.

But in Isaiah 40, 31, one of my, I love this verse, it says, But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.

They shall mount up wings as eagles.

They shall run and not be weary.

They shall walk and faint not.

Now, there's four things in that one little verse that describes the eagle Christian.

And then we're going to go to 1 Samuel 17 and look at it.

First of all, we see that an eagle Christian has energy.

He has energy.

Hey, living for the Lord takes a lot of energy.

Amen.

It really does.

You see Paul constantly pressing toward the mark.

I fight the good fight.

I mean, it takes a lot of energy to be an eagle Christian.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall, here it is, number one, renew their strength.

It takes energy.

Number two, it takes elevation.

Look at mount up wings as eagles.

You know what that means?

That means that you and I ought to soar above the world.

In other words, we ought not to let all the junk in this world bring us down.

Can I get an amen?

We ought to set the example.

We ought to take the high road, not the low road.

We ought to be the example.

When people think about Christians, they ought to think about you.

Teenagers, when people think about what is a real Christian, they ought to call you out by name, Callie.

They ought to call you out by name, Ella.

So, what is an eagle Christian?

They have energy, they have elevation, and number three, they have enthusiasm.

Notice what it says.

And let us run and not be weary.

They're not going to quit.

They're not going to give up.

They may get knocked down, but they're going to get back up.

Proverbs 24, 17.

The righteous fall seven times, but they get back up.

They're not going to quit on you.

You can count on them when the going gets tough.

They're going to be there.

They're not going to walk out on you.

They're not going to get their feelings hurt.

Well, let me put it another way.

They are going to get their feelings hurt.

We all get our feelings hurt.

But they don't let their feelings control their actions.

Can I get an Amen?

Amen.

You hang in there.

Just get back up and keep fighting.

When you've done all you can do to stand, stand.

Ephesians 6.

They're enthusiastic.

And then number four, they're enduring.

They endure.

Walk and faint not.

They don't quit.

So let me take you now to 1 Samuel 17 and show you, show you an example.

And that's what we're going to be looking at today and next week.

We will be in 1 Samuel 17.

And we're going to look at one of the greatest ego Christians ever to walk the planet.

Probably, if not, the most talked-about story, it's in the top three or the top two, is David and Goliath.

How many of you have ever heard about David and Goliath?

That's what I thought.

And if you haven't, but I shouldn't say that used to, you know, but now people don't even know who David and Goliath are.

We are now living in a society in America that, you know, everybody says we're the Bible Belt.

Not anymore.

We can be called the Bible Belt, but it's not like it was 30 years ago.

I mean, I talk to people all the time that do not know who Moses is, who the disciples are, who David and Goliath are.

Yeah, I'm serious.

The millennial generation, there's a lot, and children that's never heard those stories.

They were never brought up in church.

They were never brought up in vacation Bible school, which we're going to have the end of July.

They've never been brought up in the things of God, like we just challenged the parents to do.

They don't know.

But in 1 Samuel 17, one of the most talked about miracles or battles or circumstances in the Bible, and I'm going to tell you what I get excited as I was, I've been studying all week on 1 Samuel 17.

As we look at the progression of David, where he starts and where he finishes, is such a great example for young people and older people.

Because David didn't start at the top.

He was not born, hey, hey, into influence.

He was not born into money.

He was not born into prestige.

He was not born into power.

He started at the lowest bottom rung of the ladder.

A shepherd boy.

We're going to look at the four key ingredients that made him an eagle Christian next week.

You don't want to miss that message as we deal with the first part, middle part of this chapter.

But today we're going to look at basically verses 22 through 29, which describes an eagle Christian.

I want to give you the description of an eagle Christian.

And then next week we'll see the key to being an eagle Christian.

Okay?

So number one, let's look at it.

Verse 22.

And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage and ran into the army and came and saluted his brethren.

And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath, by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words.

And David heard them.

And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were sore afraid.

And the men of Israel said in verse 25, Have you seen this man that has come up?

Surely to defy Israel?

Is he come up?

And it shall be that the man who kills him, the king, will enrich him with great riches, will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

Now that's a pretty good reward, materialistically thinking.

One, he's going to be rich overnight.

Two, he's going to get a wife, one of the king's daughters.

Three, his whole family will no longer have to pay taxes.

Hello.

Now, fleshly speaking, that ought to encourage anybody.

I'm going to get a good-looking woman, I'm going to get rich, and I don't ever have to pay taxes.

Now it doesn't get any better than that.

Amen.

That's what it says.

But what did the men do?

They fled.

They ran from Goliath.

They could care less about all the wealth.

They could care less about not having to pay taxes.

They could care less about marrying a beautiful woman.

You know why?

They were scared.

Fear had driven them to shut down.

That's exactly what's trying to happen in America today.

Fear, Satan, is trying to shut us down.

And bless God, we're not going to let him do it.

Amen?

We're not going to let him do it.

God's not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind.

The righteous are bold as a lion.

Proverbs 28:1.

Proverbs 28:1

And so here David is.

I meant.

And David spake to the men, saying, What shall be done to the man that kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach for Israel?

For who is this uncircumcised?

That word means, who is this?

Actually, if you go on and we'll see next week, as an enemy, Goliath tells David, you come to me as if I'm a dog.

You come to me with a sling.

Well, actually, he didn't see the sling.

You come to me with a stick.

Because that's all he had, if you remember.

I meant, we know Saul tried to put his armor on him.

That didn't work, and we'll talk about that.

But all he had was, and so, oh, Goliath says, You come to me as a dog.

Well, guess what?

That's exactly what he meant when he said you uncircumcised Philistine.

You nothing but a dog.

You think you're a champion.

You're nothing.

That's what he meant.

You're nothing.

And then notice what he says.

That he should defy their armies, live God.

Do you realize he here this was?

Now let me remind you how big Goliath was.

History or research says he was either anywhere from nine feet to twelve feet.

They vary, three feet.

But nine feet, can I tell you is pretty high.

How many of you have nine-foot ceilings and homes?

We do.

Okay, his head hit your ceiling.

Hello.

Huge.

Huge.

He was so big, so strong that his armor weighed between 125 to 150 pounds.

His spear was over 75 pounds.

I mean, he was huge.

King Saul, King Saul was seven feet.

He was the biggest man in Israel.

The big champion for Israel.

Where was he when Goliath was coming out twice a day, 40 days in a row?

He was in his tent.

He was scared to death.

If anybody ought to be taking him on, it ought to be Saul.

The leader.

As goes the leader, hey, goes the army.

They were all running.

Fear.

Fear.

And then notice what he says in David.

And the people answered him, So shall it be done to the man that kills him.

And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard when he spake unto the men, and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why comest thou hither?

And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness?

I know thy pride and thy naughtiness and thy heart, for thou art come down.

Hey, that thou mightest see the battle.

And David said, What have I done now?

Is there not a cause?

Now you've got to realize there's a lot of animosity with the oldest brother against the little brother, the youngest brother.

You know why?

Because when you go back and you read these two chapters, 15, 16, and then read 17, getting ready for next week, you're going to see David had been secretly, by Samuel, anointed to be the next king.

And guess what?

Eliab and his three brothers that are now serving in the army, they were there when that ceremony took place.

Now let me tell you who was the big strong one of the of the uh seven children.

Eliab.

He was the hero of the bunch.

He was David's hero.

There's no doubt in my mind.

He looked up to his eldest brother.

I mean, here he is, the strong one.

And now, hey, he's no longer chosen to be the king.

He's, hey, David, David was kind of outdoing him a little bit.

And not only that, then in chapter 16, David becomes one of the many uh armor bearers.

He's summoned to the king to be an armor bearer.

See, the Lord was setting all this up.

So now he's jealous that he's been summoned by the king, even though he was sent back to take care of the sheep.

I mean, so there's jealousy here, and then notice what happens with jealousy.

Eliab starts judging David's motives.

He didn't get the facts.

He didn't ask him why he was here.

He just started telling him why he was here.

Sounds like some news to me.

I didn't care about the facts.

Eliah, Eliab didn't care about the facts.

He was jealous, burning with jealousy.

He's upset for two reasons.

One, he's jealous of David, but secondly, he's convicted by what David said.

In other words, David said, Why are y'all being a coward and not going out there and fighting the giant?

Hello.

I mean, the Lord's just bam, aliah, bam, aliah, bam.

So he's retaliating with bitterness and jealousy.

We see that every day.

What's going on in America now?

Same thing.

What goes on when you're upset and mad at someone or mad with me, the preacher?

Hey, when I'm mad and upset, a lot of times it's jealousy.

A lot of times it's just attitude.

Oh me, can I get an OME?

Help me here now.

And so instead of I don't want the facts, I want to tell you off.

Amen?

I don't want a fact when I'm mad.

I don't care about the facts.

I just want to get you.

And that's exactly what we see with a laugh.

Now, real quick.

That's a good introduction.

What, the preacher's gonna just get me?

No.

Seven things I saw in David.

But what I'm gonna give you today is the high points, and then next week we're gonna go in and show you how these characteristics, these character traits of David were made.

You don't get character overnight.

Can I get an amen?

You don't just decide you're gonna reach out here, okay?

I'm gonna have character.

That doesn't work that way.

It takes years to develop and build.

Can I get an amen?

But it starts a while ago dedicating your children to the Lord.

It starts right then.

Right then, church.

I promise.

I promise.

Number one, eagle Christians do not run from adversity.

1 Samuel 17, verse 24.

1 Samuel 17:24

Well, look at verse 22 and 23 again.

And David left his carriage in the hand of a keeper.

He didn't just, he made sure his carriage was intact and someone was watching after the carriage.

That's responsibility.

And notice he ran into the army and came and saluted his brethren.

He honored them.

And he talked with them.

And behold, there came up the champion in the Philistine of Gathgolize by the name, uh by name out of the armies of the Philistines and spake according to the same words.

And David heard them in verse 24.

And all the men of Israel, hey, when they saw the man, fled from him and were sore afraid.

They came out.

They came out.

Jehovah, Jehovah, Jehovah.

And then there came that 12-foot giant, and he would call them out by name, you Israelites army, the great God of Jehovah.

Where are you?

Come fight me.

And he would do his thing.

Boom, boom.

Fight me, I'll take on the great, I'll whip anybody you sin.

And instead of saying, in the name of Jehovah, charging, you know what they went?

They went, they ran back into the tents.

Strong army.

All talk, no do.

I know a lot of Christians like that.

A lot of talk, but no do.

I used to do this.

Talk's cheap.

Talk's cheap.

So David didn't run from adversity.

In fact, when you look at chapter verse 40, and he took his staff in his hand, chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, which he had even in the script, and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.

And when you look on down, he began, there's no doubt, began to run toward Goliath.

He never, hey, he got to the battle, ran to the army, got time to take on the Goliath, ran toward the adversary.

Ladies and gentlemen, we in today's society, right now, this is not a time to go run and hide.

It's a time to stand in the gap lovingly and kindly.

But hey, if God be for us, who can be against us?

I'm not running.

I have preached every Sunday.

And I'll continue to not running.

I told Benji, I said, I'm going to be here at church every Sunday.

I don't care if I preach to the chair by myself, and I did a couple of Sundays.

Man, I saw all of you.

I saw Carolyn sitting there.

I saw where y'all sit, y'all get in the habit.

Now, this has messed up some of your seating.

Because some of you, Garrett's a little too, y'all a little too far back up there.

But hey, I just I made up my mind.

And then Elaine gave me the idea to do a drive in service.

I said, shoot, yeah, I'll get on the back of the truck and preach.

And we'll beep for amen.

Beep beep.

People are still talking about that.

Hey, we're not gonna run, folks, away from the adversary.

We're gonna run.

Toward him.

The gates of hell will not chabil against the church.

That is not the church being on the defense, that's the church being on the offense.

It's not Satan attacking the church.

It's the church attacking the gates of hell.

I hope every morning when Satan gets up, hey, he sees Danny Love and he says, Oh no! Oh no! He's up! He's up.

CCW's up! Oh no! They're gonna attack their community with the gospel.

Amen.

We're gonna attack it with the ice cream truck.

Jesus is awesome.

By the way, we've got a new ice cream truck.

Ha ha! Not a new one, but a 2004.

We've been wore the other one out.

Ben, our mechanic, said, I think you better be thinking about getting another truck.

That's okay.

We wore it out.

One of the greatest ministries we've ever had.

Would you not agree, Church?

Rick's been after me for two years.

He finally got what he wanted.

He got him a new truck.

Amen.

He's over there.

I waited till she is on her last leg.

And we're still gonna use her.

We'll drive her down there for the ball games and still use it to give out ice cream.

We're not gonna put her out to pasture.

That sucker's gonna keep working.

Keep going! Keep pressing.

Number two.

Oh, by the way, Proverbs 28, verse 1.

Proverbs 28:1

The wicked flee when no man pursues, but the righteous are bold as lion.

Number two.

Eagle Christians will be rewarded when they stand up for God.

Revelation 22, 12 says, Behold, I come quickly, and my word is with me to give every man according to his work.

Now listen, his work shall be.

Did you hear that?

Hey, your work, not mine.

I can't do it for you.

You can't do it for me.

Romans 14, 12 says, at the judgment seat, every knee's gonna bow and get an account of himself to God.

Amen.

We are the ones that are going to be held accountable.

And we've got to realize that.

So you've got to hang in there, folks.

You've got to give it all you got.

You really do.

And then number three, eagle Christians show up in desperate situations.

Woo! I like that.

They're not frozen in fear, they're not traumatized.

They're not dismayed, discouraged, and defeated.

They're not disabled by dread or by the opposition.

1 Samuel 17, 11, and 12.

When Saul and all Israel heard the words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, discouraged, frightened, greatly afraid.

You know what brings on this paralyzing and disabling?

Number one, because you don't depend on the Lord's help.

If you'll see in this whole chapter, when we look next week, I'm gonna look at the king, Saul, and the shepherd, David.

And King Saul was making every decision in the flesh.

Every decision in the flesh.

David was making every decision in the spirit.

Big difference, folks.

Big difference.

Jesus says, I'm the vine, you're the branches.

He that abideth in me.

Hey, he that abideth in me can do all things.

I can do all things through Christ, which strengthens me.

Philippians 4.13.

If God be for us, say it with me.

Romans 8.31.

So we see that.

Number two, the lack of faith.

Saul had no faith.

His faith had gone because of sin, and you see that in chapters 15 and 16.

Because he had sinned by going into the priest's position and offering up sacrifice because he was ready to go into battle and Samuel wasn't there, so he decided he'd take on the priest's role.

That was a major mistake.

And then the second major big sin he did was when he was fighting the Malachites and destroying them.

God told him, don't take any of the spoil.

Destroy it all.

Take nothing.

But he didn't.

So Saul is making decisions with a quenched spirit, with no spirit guiding and directing.

Everything he's decision he's making is fleshly, and he's frightened to death because he's not depending on God.

And David, on the other hand, a little shepherd boy, he's saying, why are y'all so cowardly bowing down to this?

And they never, David never acknowledged him as a champion.

I like that.

He didn't see him as a champion, he saw him as a dog.

He's coming to him with a stick and a sling.

Not once did he acknowledge him as a champion.

But he acknowledged the God of all gods, the king of kings and the Lord of Lords, God himself as the champion.

You come to me with a spear and a shield and a sword.

I come to you in the name of Jehovah.

Big difference.

Big difference.

Big difference.

And then number three, discouragement.

They had him really discouraged.

And let me remind you, chapter 41 of Isaiah, verse 10, fear thou not, for I am with thee.

Be not dismayed.

Same Hebrew word, don't be discouraged.

For I am thy God, I will strengthen thee.

Yea, I will help thee.

Yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

God's got you.

Hey, he's holding you up with his right hand.

And if God is holding me and you up, how can we ever be frightened and afraid and run from the enemy?

How can we?

We can't.

We better not.

We need some ego Christians.

Can I get an amen?

And then number four, prayerlessness.

Not once do you see Saul saying, hold a prayer meeting.

Jesus said, men ought to always pray and not to faint.

Luke 18, 1.

Jeremiah 33, call unto me and I'll answer thee and show thee great mighty things which thou knowest not.

It was not the promise of a wife or the money that enticed David.

It was the reputation of God that motivated David.

You know what David was upset about?

Two things.

One, the lack of faith with the soldiers and King Saul.

And two, the lack of faith in God.

I didn't trust God.

Trust in the Lord with all thy heart.

Lean not on thy own understanding.

In all those ways, acknowledge him.

And he will direct the path.

Number four, look at another characteristic of an ego Christian.

Eagle Christians always speak up.

Whew! That's been one of the weakest characteristics of Christians.

We don't speak up enough.

I'm not talking about rioting and destroying anything, but hey, there's nothing wrong with a peaceful demonstration.

I agree with that.

I'm all that's that's our our rights constitutionally.

We can speak up.

We have the right to peacefully speak up.

And I'm ex, I get so discouraged because we've got so many dynamic Christian educators and qualified Bible scholars and leaders.

I'll tell you what we need.

We need a Holy Ghost revival with politicians.

We need to start lecting men and women of God that really believe this book, church.

Somebody asked me who you're voting for.

I said, I'm voting for those that stand for the Word of God.

That's who I vote for.

You say, well, how do you know that?

You look at their voting record.

You look at their voting record.

I've always done that, have I not, honey?

Always.

I'm a biblicist, not a Democrat, not a Republican.

I'm a Biblicist.

That's my party.

We gotta speak out.

Listen to what he said in verse 26.

And David spake to the men and stood by him, saying, What should be done to the man that kills this Philistine?

Takes away the reproach from Israel.

For whom is the uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of God?

Man, he had the facts.

He had the truth.

He asked great questions.

Nobody wants to sit down and really debate the real facts of the problems.

They just want to push their agenda.

Let's get to the truth.

Can I get an AB?

Let's help.

I want we won't we want great change for the good of all people.

David asked the right question.

Is there not a cost?

Watching online, is there not a cause?

Folks, it's time we we we we step back and ask the right question.

Amen.

And not be a sh don't be don't be don't allow political correctness to keep us silent.

Allow the truth to be spoken and ye shall know the truth.

Well, I'm about to have a oh, if I was 10 years younger, I'd just leap.

Hey, hey, ye shall know the truth and the what?

Hello.

It's time to get to the truth.

Not not fabricated stories or fabricated facts, they're facts.

And the facts are there, just nobody wants the facts because they hey, it dis it diffuses, defuse.

I got it.

It defuses their cause.

All of us are guilty of that.

Can I get an amen or oh me?

When I want my way, I don't really want Susan to start telling me the facts.

I don't want a fact because probably I'm wrong.

Hello.

Probably.

I just want my agenda.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

And I'm not picking, throwing stones at anybody.

I'm preaching the truth, folks.

We've got, hey, you love this country.

It's time we've got to start standing up and asking the right questions and trying to solve the real problems.

Can I get an amen?

If you never solve the problems, you keep getting what you're getting.

I'm not taking sides.

I want to solve the problem.

Amen.

I'm a problem solver.

She'll tell you that.

I really am.

That's what I do.

You come to me, don't come to me if you don't want me to try to help you.

A lot of times, Sudden say, I don't need your help, I just need you to listen.

That's true.

But I'm a doer, I'm a fixer.

You got a problem?

Let's fix it.

That's what I do.

That's the way God made me.

So, ego Christians always speak up.

Hey, listen to Psalms 94, 16.

Who will rise up for me against evildoers?

Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

Pretty plain, isn't it?

1 Peter 3.15.

Hey, if any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.

Romans 1.16, I'm not ashamed of the gospel.

We got to speak up.

Number five.

Eagle Christians will always be criticized.

I'll be criticized for preaching like this.

I've been criticized all my life for preaching the truth, the unadulterated truth.

Now I've been guilty sometimes of doing it in the wrong attitude.

I have.

Folks, I'm telling you.

Spirit feel control preaching is the answer.

The word of God is the answer.

It really is.

It really is the answer.

It really is.

And we see that right here.

We see it with David.

His eldest brother criticized him.

You know what he criticized him?

What?

He criticized of pride, of neglecting his duty, and of wicked curiosity.

I'm not going to go into detail there because I'm going to do that next week.

We're going to look at this criticism in detail.

You know?

Where I get hurt the most after 40 years of ministry, you know who's hurt me the most?

It's not the enemy.

It's those closest to me.

That have turned on.

We're standing for the truth.

Even your own, Jesus said, your own household.

Well turn on.

Wow.

Woe unto you if all men speak well of you.

Luke 6.22.

I don't have a problem with that.

But when it comes to those I love the most and are closest to, when they turn on me.

David's sons turned on him, his king turned on him, his eldest brother turned on him.

Number two.

David was criticized by the king.

Now let me ask you, who did he uphold the most?

His heroes were his eldest brother in the army and the king.

The king of Israel.

Saul, he loved the king.

He had two opportunities to kill King Saul when King Saul was trying to kill him.

And he said, I will not touch God's anointed.

The king turned on him.

The king.

Saul made the mistake of leaving God out.

Saul viewed things only from a human standpoint.

That's why Saul was so pessimistic.

Goliath did not know God, but David did.

We see that.

And then the third thing, David was criticized by his enemies.

And again, Goliath.

Don't be intimidated in any way by your enemies.

Can I get an amen?

We don't have to be intimidated by our enemies.

Amen.

We don't have to be.

If God be for us, say it.

Again.

Who can be against us?

Nay, in all things we've been made more than conquerors.

Romans 8.37.

That's so good.

For the eyes of the Lord.

Are you ready for this?

For the eyes of the Lord.

And I love it.

He just keeps going on and says, hey, is there not a cause?

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show himself strong in the behalf of those heart who is perfect toward him.

Herein, thou hast done foolishness, therefore, from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

In other words, he's looking for people that'll be ego Christians to stand in the gap.

For Chelsea and Westover and all our surroundings.

It's us.

We want to be that.

Eagle Christians always see the cause.
