It's great to be here.

If you guys look at your sermon notes, you'll see that we only have five things to talk about, and there aren't too many verses there.

But I do want you to turn in your Bible to Isaiah chapter 40 and flip over to Numbers chapter 14.

Those are going to be two passages that we read today, Isaiah 40 and Numbers 14.

Just a couple of weeks ago, September 8th came and went without a lot of fanfare or pomp and circumstance.

Nobody really even acknowledged that day, even though it was an anniversary of a very important event in the history of our country.

You see, September 8th marked the 50th anniversary of President Ford issuing proclamation 4311, granting a full and unconditional pardon to Richard Nixon for any crimes he may or may not have committed as President of the United States.

But you guys already had your government sermon a couple of weeks ago, and that wasn't even the most important event of the day.

Because you see, way out west in Twin Falls, Idaho, at the Snake River Canyon, I think we have a picture.

There was a man, an ABC Wide World of Sports was set up as Evil Knievel was going to attempt to propel himself a quarter mile in the air across the canyon and land safely on the other side.

He had this one-man rocket, I think we have a picture of that, called a sky cycle.

And it was steam-powered and it was on this ramp, and he was going to literally fly.

It was a task so dangerous that Evil Knievel had his tombstone pre-made before he climbed into this thing.

Now, as the story goes, when this sky cycle blasted off, the emergency parachute activated almost as soon as they got off the ramp.

And the country watched as Evil Knievel floated down and crashed into the canyon.

He only suffered minor injuries.

I think he broke his nose, and in the interviews, he was upset that he didn't complete his task.

That wasn't the only stunt that Evil Knievil ever did.

A few years before, he jumped 140 feet on his motorcycle over the fountains at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

And he landed, but then he flipped over and rolled on his head, and the motorcycle landed over him, and he broke 40 bones that day.

There was another time he jumped 14 Greyhound buses at King's Island in Ohio, and he successfully landed that jump.

Evil Knievel was must-see TV back in the mid and early 70s.

You could get a little playset with a figurine of him in his white jumpsuit with the American flag and a cape.

You could get a motorcycle.

You could even get one of these sky cycle things and shoot it in the air.

And there was more than one mom who scalded her child saying, What do you think?

You're evil can evil?

Now, as many jumps as Evil did, and he did 300 on his Harley Davidson XR 350 motorcycle.

He's known more for the crashes than he is for the jumps that he actually landed.

The human body has 206 bones.

And evil canival holds the Guinness Book of World Record mark for the most broken bones in a body.

433 breaks and fractures, he's credited with.

A voice said to Isaiah to cry out, and Isaiah said, What shall I cry?

All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.

The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of the Lord blows upon it.

Surely the people are grass.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.

You know, I'm not sure that Knievel even would have agreed with his own quote in his later years, because what happened to him a couple of years after the Snake River Canyon, he was going to jump a pool of man-eating sharks in Chicago in conjunction with the release of the Jaws movie.

And in a practice jump, he crashed on the landing ramp and ran into the cameraman and bystanders and injured other people, and he never really jumped again.

He just kind of lived out his life in obscurity.

Grass withers and flowers fade, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

When Pastor Rick invited me to preach here today on the intersection between the contend sermon series and the revelation sermon series about the letters to the seven churches, it took the Lord about two minutes to say, Dave, you're going to preach about contending for my glory.

Why do we contend for our family and for right sex and against racism and for widows and orphans and for the faith and for the government?

The why we contend for all that is that God may be glorified.

So let's pray and we'll get into the message.

Lord, thank you for this privilege you have given me.

And my prayer is simply this that here in this place, you may be glorified today.

In Jesus' name, amen.

To talk about contending for the glory of God, I think that we need to start by defining contend.

And Pastor Rick last week defined contend as to strive earnestly or struggle for something.

Contend means to strive earnestly or struggle.

Glory means to bring admiration, praise, honor, respect, and delight for something that is magnificent or beautiful.

So if we read them together, contend for the glory of God means to strive earnestly and struggle to bring praise, respect, delight for the beauty and magnificence of God.

And if we can all agree that we'll just do that, then it's probably time to take up an offering and go home.

But if you're anything like me, every now and then I could use a few pointers.

So to contend better for the glory of God, we have five things that I want to look at.

And the first of them is remember God's characteristics.

There's three big words that start with the letter O that we use to describe God.

The first one is omnipotent, all-powerful.

The Bible tells us in Psalm 147 5 that great is our Lord and mighty is his power.

The prophet Isaiah talks about it as well in chapter 40.

Let's start with verse 28, and we're going to kind of go up.

Isaiah 40, 28 says this Have you not known?

Have you not heard?

The everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.

His understanding is unsearchable.

Look up a couple of verses at 22.

It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Skipping up a couple of more verses, Isaiah asks this question To whom then will you liken God in Isaiah 40, 18?

Or what likeness will you compare to him?

To whom will we liken?

The one who stretches out the heavens like a tent to dwell in and looks on men like grasshoppers?

The one who sits on the circle on the top of the earth, who created everything and did it without even getting tired?

Nobody.

There ain't nothing like him nowhere.

It took Job a while to come around, but at the end of Job, you see him say, Lord, I know that you can do all things, and no purpose of yours can be withheld.

There's nothing that God can't do, and I have no frame of reference for being able to do anything and create anything and not even getting tired while I do it.

That doesn't make any sense to me.

But that's who God is.

He is omnipotent, all-powerful, and he is worthy of glory.

That glory is worth contending for.

And that's just the first characteristic.

The second O-word is omnipresence.

That means God's everywhere.

In the modern age, we can do a lot of things at once.

We can sit at home and video chat somebody in another country, email our kids' school, and text your brother or sister across town, kind of all at the same time.

Technology lets us do some amazing, amazing things, but the fact remains I can only be physically present in one place at one time.

I can only personally observe with my own eyes one thing at a time.

Now, there are times when I try to be so many places with my technology that I end up not even really being where I am.

But that's not necessarily the crux of what we're going to talk about today.

Sometimes a person will get so overwhelmed with all your commitments and obligations, and in just pure frustration and almost breakdown, you'll admit this truth of humanity.

I can't be in two places at once.

But you know what?

What you cannot do, God can.

The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good, Proverbs 15, 3 tells us.

To quote a race, Stephen's song, he's everywhere.

He's everywhere.

The prophet Jeremiah, God told him this can anyone hide in secret places that I shall not see?

Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?

King Solomon, when he was dedicating his temple, said, Will God indeed dwell on earth?

The heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him.

God is everywhere.

He has no problem being two places at once.

But not just that.

God has no problem being in all the places, at all the onces.

Past, present, and future places.

Isaiah 57 tells us that God inhabits eternity.

With the Lord, one day is as a thousand years.

God doesn't have our time and space restrictions and limitations.

Like he told Moses in Exodus, I am.

He just is.

And he's worthy of glory.

The third characteristic that you need to remember is God is omniscient.

I think that's how you say that.

I'm not certain.

It means all-knowing.

You know, there was a time in my life when I believed that I knew everything.

And as I progressed into my middle and late teenage years, I became quite confident that I did, in fact, know everything.

And I even tested the theory out.

And here's how I did it.

Sometimes you have the old guy that comes up, and the old guy will tell the young teenager, boy, I wish I knew what I know now, when I was your age.

It seemed like every two or three days the old guy was coming up and telling me this.

So finally, I was a little bit of a smart elect kid, but also genuinely curious, and I started asking the old guy, can you tell me what it is that you wish you knew when you were my age?

Because I would like to know.

And nobody could tell me.

And that just added fuel to my fire that I did, in fact, know everything.

Now later on, I realized there's so much to know, I can't possibly know everything.

And so I kind of stuck my head in the sand for a while and quit learning and growing.

And that didn't work out too well either.

The point of all of this is that we as people are constantly getting new information and learning, thinking, God isn't.

He doesn't get any new, surprising information.

He knows everything.

1 John 3.20 tells us God is greater than us and he knows all things.

We see in Hebrews 4.13, no creation is hidden from his sight.

All things are naked and open to the one to whom we must give account.

David says two things in Psalm 134 and Psalm 94, 130 or 139, verse 4, not a word on my tongue, but behold, the Lord knows it altogether.

All the words on my tongue, God knows.

And even worse than that, Psalm 94, 11, the Lord knows the faults of a man.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God.

How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past finding out.

It is mind-blowing.

God is all powerful, he can do anything, he doesn't get tired, he's everywhere, every place, every time, and he knows everything, including every word I speak and every thought I think.

He's worthy of all glory and honor and praise.

But wait, there's more.

If any of you here knew every word that I speak, and every thought that I think, it is hard for me to believe that your opinion of old Dave Roper wouldn't change.

There are some of you who maybe know me a little better than others, and you're like, that's the truth of the sermon right there.

But let me tell you this: God knows every thought we think, every word we speak, and he still, according to the Bible, is love.

And despite him knowing all of my thoughts, God loves me.

And he loves you too.

And that might be the very most amazing part of it all.

When I think about God's characteristics, I get fired up.

He is worthy of contending for his glory.

Number two, to help better contend for God's glory, I want you to recognize God's works.

Recognize God's works.

The Bible tells us in Romans 1.20, since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead.

Since the creation of the world, we can see his invisible attributes.

Now I can't see all powerful and all-knowing.

I can talk about it, I can read about it, but I can't see that.

But what I can see is the things that are made.

So I want to talk just a minute about some of the things that are made that we need to recognize.

Psalm 19:1 tells us the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork.

If you want to see God's glory, look up at the sky.

In the sky there's the sun, and we've got eight or nine planets, depending on whether or not Pluto is in good favor with the scientist at the time.

And we have stars and we have asteroids, and they have something called space junk floating around out there.

And in the middle of all that is our home, the earth.

Perfectly situated, just close enough to the sun that we don't freeze to death, but just far enough away that we don't burn up.

And the sun or the earth rotates around the sun and it rotates on its axis while it's rotating around the sun, but the earth doesn't sit straight up and down.

That's how I would have done it.

But the way it is, it sits at a 23-degree angle.

And that 23-degree angle while it rotates lets us have different seasons.

So we can go to the beach or ski and grow food that we process and put in little packages.

The earth is perfectly situated as it's going around, and we're twin, we're spinning a circle while we spin a circle, and somehow we don't fly off of this thing.

The reason for that is the moon.

Now the moon gives us light at night, but the moon also has this force with the earth called a gravitational pull.

And the earth is just far enough away from the moon that the gravitational force of the earth pulling on the moon keeps us all on the ground.

But the earth is not so close to the moon that the moon pulling back on the earth shoots us out and starts pulling up the crust of the earth.

It's all just right.

They say that if the earth were much further away from the moon, we would be floating.

And if it was much closer, then we would be flying.

It's all set up just right.

Now, what about plants?

It's not just the skies and heavens that cry out for the glory of God.

Isaiah 6, 3 tells us, the whole earth is full of his glory.

God's invisible attributes are present in all of the earth.

So don't just look up, look around.

Back in school, and some of you probably have a little more experience with that even now than I do, we learned this big word called photosynthesis.

Here's a refresher, the best is what I understand.

Plants take in water and light and carbon dioxide, and then plants emit oxygen and energy.

And people and animals eat plants for energy and breathe oxygen.

And then we waste carbon dioxide.

And plants take in carbon dioxide and light and water and they emit energy and oxygen.

And people and animals eat plants and breathe oxygen.

Are you kidding?

Now, we can talk about this and we can define it and we can explain how it works, but take everything that I'm holding in my hands right now and go out and make a system like this.

And put all the pieces exactly like they're supposed to go after you make the pieces.

Go figure that out.

A quick Google search tells us that we cannot overestimate the importance of photosynthesis in maintenance of the life on earth.

If photosynthesis ceased, most life, as we know, would cease to exist.

There would be so little food in organic matter that organisms would disappear.

Like caterpillars.

There's one for you.

Just think about a caterpillar if you want to consider the glory of God.

A little worm that crawls around eating leaves and stems and twigs, and then it attaches itself to a tree.

And if you've ever studied the caterpillar, it attaches itself to a tree in the shape of a letter J.

And it completely liquefies itself.

And just at the right time, this caterpillar bust out of the cocoon and it's a butterfly that has no resemblance to the cocoon or the caterpillar at all.

What?

Are you telling me that God created something that's whole purpose was to come here to earth, live for a little while, and then completely die to itself, hanging on a tree in the shape of a letter J, so that something new and different and more beautiful might be created?

The Bible tells us if any man is in Christ, he's a new creation.

Old things have passed away, and all things have become new.

You want to see that verse in action?

Look at the caterpillar.

Listen, guys, all this here didn't just happen.

Somebody put this thing together.

Somebody designed it, and that somebody is way smarter than I ever hoped to be.

Creation cries out at the magnificence of God.

All you have to do is look around, and the glory of God is evident, and it's worth contending for.

I think the biggest problem we have in recognizing God's works is distraction.

You can look out the window and see the glory of God, but you can also look out the window and see things that were created by the creation.

Things like roads and cars and buildings and stores, really good things.

But sometimes they can keep us from appreciating how light and warmth and energy and water and air all work together to keep us alive on the planet.

And the distractions are getting closer and closer and more and more persistent in our lives.

We spend a lot of our life right now.

Looking at and working on things that people a hundred years ago had never even heard of.

I mean, it's progress.

Right?

But when we do that, we don't notice the inner workings of God.

And I believe the devil knows how wonderful the creation is, and he wants us distracted because the more attention we pay to the intricacy and the perfect design of this earth that we live on, I mean, the more that we're gonna recognize that God is worthy of glory.

I know it's cliche to say that sometimes you need to stop and smell the roses.

But sometimes you need to stop and smell the roses.

But if you do, be careful you don't get stung by a bee.

Because they're out there in the flowers getting their food and moving around doing this process called cross-pollination that helps the plants reproduce.

And the bees are doing all of this, cross-pollinating, even though their body is probably too heavy for their wings to lift them up off the ground.

But the scientists say that the bees' wings, the little bitty things, can lift that body because they move in the shape of a hurricane and it generates enough force to lift something they wouldn't otherwise be able to lift.

Come on.

Recognize God's works.

He is worthy of glory.

Number three.

Maybe nowhere more clearly than Isaiah chapter 42, verse 8, where God says this I am the Lord, that is my name, my glory I will not give to another.

Isaiah 42, 8.

God is primarily interested in being glorified, and he will not share that glory.

If we respect this purpose, we might start seeing different things happen in our prayer life.

We certainly don't want to pray against the glory of God, and we don't want to pray against God's will.

So how do we pray in accordance with God's glory, respecting that purpose that God has?

Let's take a look at Numbers chapter 14, and we're going to start in verse 11.

But before we get there, I want to tell you that this is an interaction between God and Moses.

Moses is talking to God, praying, and the children of Israel have refused to enter the promised land.

A lot of you guys know that I used to work at the group home, and when I worked at the group home, the kids called me a lot of things.

But to my face, usually they called me Mr.

Dave.

And sometimes they would say, That's my house dad.

That's my house parent.

There was a little joke when I did good things for them, I became good old Mr.

Dave.

Hey, Mr.

Dave, how you doing, Mr.

Dave?

There's good old Mr.

Dave.

That's my house dad.

But when they were mad, which happened more than you might believe.

Mr.

Dave no longer seemed to be able to exist.

They would call their social worker or they would report me to the office, and sometimes I would overhear the conversation, and they would reference good old Mr.

Dave as this man.

This man did this.

This man did that.

You gotta get me away from this man.

Strangely enough, Miss Amanda always got to keep her name.

But sometimes the kids would try to divide us, and they would go to her and say, Miss Amanda, how do you live with this man?

Now I tell you that to tell you this.

God loves Israel.

He always has, he always will.

In the Old Testament, we see God call Israel my firstborn son.

He references them as a special treasure, a holy people, people special to the Lord, people above all people, the one that the Lord has chosen for himself.

But in Numbers 14, Israel is not referenced as a special chosen possession.

Let's just look at this.

Numbers 14, verse 11.

Numbers 14:11

Then the Lord said to Moses, How long will these people reject me?

And how long will they not believe me with all the signs that I have performed among them?

I mean, God kind of goes, This man on the children of Israel is the way I see it.

And the next verse, I will strike them with pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.

God tells Moses, let's kill these off and make some more.

Anybody ever heard that before?

And Moses is here interceding for the children of Israel, and he's trying to keep God from killing them all off right there, one time, boom.

And he doesn't say, God, this is your special people.

He doesn't say they're your chosen possession.

He doesn't say they're your firstborn.

In fact, Moses prays, giving respect to the purpose of God to be glorified.

Let's look at verse 13.

Moses said to the Lord, Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by your might you brought these people up from among them, and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land.

They have heard that you, Lord, are among these people, that you, Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands above them, and you go before them in a pillar of a cloud by day and a pillar of a fire by night.

Now, if you kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of your fame will speak, saying, Because the Lord was not able to bring this people to the land which he swore to give them, therefore he killed them in the wilderness.

Moses says, God, if you do this, if you kill them all right here, that's not gonna do nothing for your glory.

They're not gonna believe you're as powerful as you are.

They're gonna think that you have limitations.

And guess what?

It worked.

Verse 20.

The Lord said, I have pardoned according to your word, but truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.

Now the children of Israel didn't get to go to the promised land, but they didn't all die right there.

They got the option to go walk around and wander around and kind of die naturally, I guess.

If you align your prayers with God's glory, you may be shocked.

You may be shocked at how the Lord starts working for the things you're asking for.

As truly as I live, God said, all the earth will be filled with my glory.

Number four, reflect God's magnificence.

Believers are called to display God's glory, but we cannot do it by ourselves.

Romans 3.23 tells us, you know the verse, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

There is nothing we can do to attain the glory of God except have faith in Jesus Christ who died and rose again that we might be saved.

Romans 6.23 tells us that the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.

So by accepting Jesus, you can attain God's glory, and there's no other way that you are going to get God's glory.

Jesus prayed on the night before he was arrested and crucified in John 17, and he says, Father, the glory you have given me, I have given them, that they may be one just as we are one.

God gave glory to Jesus, and when you accept Jesus, Jesus gives you the glory of the Lord through Christ.

Only way to get it.

But when you have it, you have a job to do.

1 Corinthians 6.20, glorify God in your body and spirit, which are God's.

Constantly use the body that God created and gave to you to bring him glory and reflect his magnificence.

How?

Pastor Rick talked about it some last week.

Spend time in the presence of the Lord.

We see another example from Moses when he went up on the Mount Sinai to get the commandments and he came down.

The Bible tells us in uh Exodus 34 that his face was shiny.

You know anybody, they're just shining.

There's some here.

They just can't help it.

They just shine.

You know why?

And spending time in the presence of the Lord.

We're called to do that.

Shine, reflect God's glory that you have in you.

Mary, when she was pregnant with Jesus, said this in Luke 1.46: My soul magnifies the Lord.

We're supposed to reflect God's image and magnify the Lord in our lives.

Only way to do it, spend time in the presence of the Lord.

Spend time in the presence of the Lord.

When Peter and John got arrested in Acts chapter 4, the people that arrested them, the Bible says, saw their boldness, perceived they were untrained, uneducated men, and they marveled and realized that these men had been with Jesus.

Anybody say that about you?

He can.

So when we contend, the thing that we contend for should always be secondary to the glory of God.

First and foremost, God be glorified.

And then, as Doris Day so eloquently put it many, many years ago, K Sera Serah.

Whatever will be, will be.

God be glorified, and whatever else happens is secondary.

On the night that he prayed in John chapter 17 before his arrest, Jesus said, Father, the hour has come.

John 17 · chapter mention

Glorify your son, that your son may glorify you.

He goes on a couple of verses later to say this.

I have glorified you on earth.

I have finished the work you've given me to do.

To contend for God's glory, the fifth thing is remain God's faithful servant.

Don't quit early.

Like Jesus prayed, I have finished the work you've given me to do.

We see Paul say, I fought the good fight, I've finished the race, I've kept the faith.

Have you finished the work that the Lord has for you to do?

I hope not.

Because if you're still on the planet, you're not done.

You might have decided that you're finished doing all the work that you're going to do, and you may not be willing to do any more.

But if you're still walking around, there's glory to contend for, and there is work to do.

Next week we're going to start Revelation 2 and 3, talking about the letters that Jesus gave to John for the seven churches in Asia Minor.

And it's a message of praise and a message of encouragement, correction, rebuking, warning.

But before we talk about the messages, I want to take just a minute and talk a little bit about the messenger, the Apostle John.

If there's anybody who was justified in wrapping up his earthly ministry, it was John.

We find him in Revelation on the Isle of Patmos.

He's been a follower.

He walked with Jesus.

He saw Jesus crucified, saw the empty tomb, saw Jesus resurrected.

We find him now, he's probably in his 80s when we see him in Revelation.

All of his friends have already been martyred, been killed off, received the reward, gone on to be with the Lord, to live as Christ and to die as game.

And here we have John.

And the historical writers tell us that they put him in exile on the Isle of Patmos because they couldn't figure out how to kill him.

Now I don't know.

If you can't figure out how to kill somebody, you're either really incompetent.

And trust me, the Roman Empire was not incompetent in the area of killing.

Or, or if you can't figure out how to kill somebody, that person ain't done working.

And so we see John here in the Spirit on the Lord's day, in exile, old man on the Isle of Patmos.

And even though he's an advanced age and probably tired, he's fixing to get a full slate of work to do.

He's got to write letters to seven churches, and he's got to write a whole book that we're still reading and anticipating, and he's got to see stuff that we haven't seen yet.

And I think some of his most important work was right there in his gray years.

Psalms 92 tells us those who are planted in the house of the Lord will flourish in the courts of our God.

They'll still bear fruit in an old age.

They'll be fresh and flourishing.

Don't ever think you're too old to do the work that God has given you to do.

Remain God's faithful servant.

Like Jesus and like Peter and like John.

Finish the work.

Contend for God's glory every day.

If you guys ever go to Butte, Montana, and you're on Harrison Avenue, you can see the Mountain View Cemetery.

And in the Mountain View Cemetery, you can see the tombstone of Evil Knievel.

Evil Knievel died in 2007.

His flesh is withered.

He's faded away and fallen like the flower of the grass.

Even his memory will soon be gone.

Getting ready for this sermon, I asked four teenagers, you know who Evil Knievel is?

Nobody'd ever heard of him.

I asked one lady who was born in the 80s, you know who Evil Knievel is?

She said, That sounds familiar, but I don't know.

Soon his memory will be gone, probably when my generation dies out.

Nobody's gonna remember.

This is his tombstone that you're seeing.

And he had most of this engraved in 1974.

You see him there on his motorcycle with his cape flying.

The other side of it has a picture of this sky cycle thing that he created.

And he had most of this done again in 74.

He's got words to live by on there: faith, health, education, love, work, honor, ability, and dream.

Those were his principles in 74.

But way on the bottom, I don't know if you can see it, but the very last thing it says that evil Knievel insisted be added to his marker in 2007 says, believe in Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Evil Knievil lived a life chasing all the glory that the world could find.

But not long before he died, he got saved.

And he gave his testimony at a TV church and got baptized, and hundreds surrendered to Jesus that day.

And he had to have this on his tombstone.

And now anybody that goes there to see about the world's most famous stunt man, you're gonna see those words.

Bones heal, chicks dig scars, pain is temporary, but glory lasts forever.

You know what?

Maybe evil can evil was right.
