Have you ever missed something very important?

A deadline, a time frame, something you were supposed to know.

Well, uh, July 30th, I was working, dispatching, moving crews, and Heather called, and I talked to her for a few moments.

It was early in the morning.

Didn't think much about it, other than her tone seemed a little different when she was getting off the phone.

Heather called a second time.

About an hour later, I'm like, she knows I'm working.

Why would she call me a second time?

And just a little bit later, my my mind kicked in.

I looked down at the calendar and I said, man, you understand?

It was her birthday.

So I called her the third time.

I walked, I literally went into a closet, so I was away from anybody else, and I said, Hey, gotcha.

And she was like, I don't think so.

She knew.

I knew that I had been added and I had forgot something very important.

Well, when we think about that, Paul wrote this letter after he sent Timothy to check on his this newly formed church.

And this church is a miracle.

Scripture in Acts, we'll talk about it next week.

Three Sundays, he's with this church and they're formed.

Can you imagine this church being formed in three weeks' time?

Well, there were some questions that Timothy brought back from that visit, and some questions were things like, are we missing something?

Has something happened and we were not privy to it?

Some questions from the church.

Has Jesus returned and we missed it?

Will it happen in our lifetime?

What if we die before his return?

What of our loved ones who have gone on before us?

Did they just miss it?

Are they just done?

And so all of these questions are part of the reason that the books to 1st and 2 Thessalonians that we'll look through were written.

And so I want you to, as we start, we're gonna go in the middle of the book, chapter 4, we're gonna backtrack next week and so on.

But we're starting because of these questions.

What if?

What has happened?

And I want you to know, church, my desire through these next several weeks is to bring to you this hope for the hour.

Would you pray with me?

Father, we love you.

We are so thankful, God, for the opportunity to get into your book.

And God, I pray that it would do its work.

That we pray that for the next few moments and for the next several weeks, God, that you would allow us the freedom of clarity.

Allow us peace as we hear from you and your spirit, God, and we pray that you would eliminate any distractions.

Help us to understand hope in this hour.

We love you in Jesus' name.

Amen.

Look down there at 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

1 Thessalonians 4 · chapter mention

We're gonna look at verse 13 through 15.

The first thing this morning is a certain resurrection.

In verse 13, it says, But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus.

For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

First thing I want you to notice it says, Don't be ignorant.

You ever thought somebody was ignorant?

Easy.

This is church.

The word is Agneo, and it is not without information, but those who, by disinclination of information, they hear it, but choose to not let it process.

One man said that his dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree, and his friend said to him, I know how to fix that.

He said, Here is some black electrical tape.

That does it for me, right?

On your car.

He said, Here's some electrical tape.

That is ignorance.

In the few weeks of Paul's ministry to the Thessalonica church, he emphasized that Jesus, who had died, resurrected, and ascended and would return.

But these church members struggled as to what to look for.

What would the conditions be?

And what of what they said, their loved ones.

Now, when I think about the world that we're in today, this is part of what God started to burden my heart.

I was going a different direction for the next eight weeks, and when the war in Iran broke loose, God began to turn my heart towards these passages.

And I wanted to share with you hope because of the state of our world.

Rachel Bronson said this: thinly veiled threats of nuclear weapons remind us that the world and the escalation of conflict by accident, intention, or calculation, even the possibility of conflict spinning out of control is high.

So when this war broke loose, God began to stir me that we needed to be reminded that there was hope for the hour.

Because this happens, right?

You've seen it happen in your generation before, if you're old enough.

You've seen war and you've seen rumors of war and you've seen things like this sort of take place on the world stage.

And when that happens for a week or two or three weeks, people begin to question and think and wonder what if?

What will be?

What about us?

And so, where do we turn?

Church, I want to submit to you, this is where we turn.

Because not once or twice or three times, but prophetically with a hundred percent accuracy, this book has predicted the events that have happened.

He says, Don't be ignorant or lack understanding.

Why?

Because that would be hopeless.

If you don't understand this, then that is what hope is like.

Or being hopeless is like.

You know, last week we celebrated Easter.

But as Amanda said, resurrection hope is continuous.

And he says, Don't be ignorant as someone without hope.

So let's talk about this certain resurrection.

Letter A is the conditions of the departed.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 15, 16 through 19, it's sort of this passage and it mirror a little bit.

1 Corinthians 15 · chapter mention

I'm going to read those verses for you.

It says, For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen.

And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile.

You're still in your sins.

Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most pitiable.

And so it talks about the hope that we have in the resurrected Christ.

And if he did not, what we celebrated last week, if that did not happen, if that did not take place, our faith is in vain.

Christianity is in vain.

This church service means nothing but church.

He rose from that grave.

And so what Paul is trying to tell the church here is that those who have fallen asleep, he uses the word sleep there.

He says, I don't want you ignorant about those in verse 13 and 14, those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

The word sleep is a euphemism for death.

When we fall asleep at night, we lose consciousness, right?

But we don't cease to exist.

We lose mental consciousness.

We fall asleep, but those in Christ, they'll lose a physical life, but they won't cease to exist.

I know this is a lot.

We're going to get somewhere.

John MacArthur said, Heaven is a perfect place made for a perfect people that are made perfect.

The soul of the deceased, the Bible says to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord.

The soul of the deceased is experience in perfection in the presence of Jesus Christ.

This is what the Thessalonians were struggling with.

They feared that their dead would miss out or that they would somehow miss out.

And Paul went to task to correct this speculation.

Paul said, I desire in Philippians to go and be with the Lord.

Why would Paul say, I go to be somewhere if that place was not a better place?

He said it would be better for me.

But he said, I'm here, and that's better for you that I can have ministry.

Why did he have that desire?

And here's the truth for all of us: because we are built homesick for Eden.

We're built homesick for our home.

God created us in the image of God, and we are homesick for the place that we belong.

The dead in Christ, he says here, are at peace.

So their condition, one, he says to the church, they're at peace.

They're coordinates, let her be, of the departed.

Again, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Death is the soul's form of transformation to the eternal state.

Luke 23, 43, he says to the thief on the cross, you will be with me today in paradise.

Okay, to be with Jesus.

So the coordinates, he told the thief, you're going to be in a place until Jesus comes again in the sky.

Romans 8, 1 says, Now there is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

This is important.

Eighty times in Paul's letters, he says, in Christ Jesus.

Why does that matter to the coordinates of the dead in Christ?

Those who have gone before us that are in Christ Jesus, I think it's generally not as important the place, the holding place till heaven come as they're in Christ Jesus.

Do you understand that, church?

I don't know a whole lot about the place, but I know about the who of the place.

And I think that is just as important.

So let's look at the second part.

A coming rapture.

Look down at verse 16 and 17.

It says, For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

And thus shall we always be with the Lord.

Therefore, comfort one another with these words.

The Bible says the Lord will descend from heaven.

What promise is he keeping by descending from heaven?

Well, Amanda mentioned it in John 14.

He says, I'm going to prepare a place for you, and if I go to prepare a place, I will come again and receive you unto myself.

And so this promise of the coming rapture, letter A is this.

It's a sudden command.

In 1 Corinthians 15, if you want to turn back there, he says, In a moment, in a twinkling of an eye, that sudden command.

And here it says, We'll be caught up.

How fast is the twinkling of your eye?

Pretty fast.

There's some people who might want to live through this life and say, you know what?

I'm going to wait to get things kind of right with God till later in life.

I'm going to wait for a day.

Can you imagine that?

In the twinkling of the eye, this all takes place, and they say, now, all right?

Go ahead and blink.

How fast is that?

Have you ever tried to say a prayer that fast?

Dear Lord, I better say it's too late.

The twinkling has taken place.

In a moment.

Some reject the doctrine of the rapture.

They'll say the word rapture is not in the Bible, Pastor.

They are right.

The word Trinity is also not in the Bible.

And if you reject that, you're going to miss out on the rapture and the second coming.

The word rapture is the Latin word rapdis.

It comes from the Greek word harpazo, which is the phrase caught up.

Bible says that no man knows the day or the hour.

It's interesting throughout your life and mine, you'll see all kind of weird people show up and claim to know the day or the hour, right?

And with 100% accuracy, they've all been wrong.

So if anyone here wants to tell me the day or the hour, I'm glad to listen to you, but I'm going to categorize you with these folks.

Weird.

Weird.

It says there's three sounds.

That's just interesting information: a shout or a calling of attention, the voice of the archangel Michael, and a trumpet.

Trumpet's important because Exodus 19, there's a verse in Numbers.

A trumpet signals God's descending.

But Titus 2.13 says this.

It tells us to live ready, looking for that blessed appearance.

This sudden command, letter B, is a sovereign catching up.

I want you to turn to Matthew 27.

I want you to see the preview.

Matthew 27.

Verse 51 and 52.

It says, Then behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earthquaked, and the rocks were split.

Listen to this, highlight this.

You might have ran over this and just became elevator music.

And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised and coming out of the graves after his resurrection.

Can you imagine this?

Imagine you're walking around in that city that day and you say, I just think I seen my dead Uncle Bob.

Weird.

Right?

This was a preview.

This will be a miraculous celebration.

And people think about this, and it's hard not to think about it in these terms, but bones have been scattered, right?

The deceased in your life, people are scattered, and all of a sudden it says, in the moment, in a twinkling of the eye, that north, south, east, west, instantly, people will come together.

The dead in Christ will rise.

People say, Well, what about cremation, Pastor?

What about ashes spread at sea?

As if God is in heaven going, Michael! We've got a femur in Iowa.

We've got a kneecap in Saskatchewan.

I assure you, church, that God who said, Let there be light, that same God is not concerned about how to gather dust.

Omniscience knows every molecule.

Omnipotence reassembles instantly.

And that's what it says.

It says we're caught up.

I was thinking about this this week.

I don't know if I can verify this just yet, but a few years ago, a company put out a tennis shoe that I think you may receive in that moment.

You may receive your owns, Benji.

Right?

Heather might look at Amanda and say, Amanda, you know I'm on cloud nine.

And Amanda will look at Dave and say, I'm over the moon, Dave.

And Dave will say, you know, I'm walking on sunshine.

And it'll all be true.

David Jeremiah said, When Jesus comes back in the rapture is to take the church.

Romans 8:1, I said this earlier, there is now therefore no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.

I'm going to share a few contrasts because I do understand and hear me, this doesn't affect salvation, does it affect our worship.

But I understand that some people don't look at the rapture the same way, or some people believe that the rapture and the second coming are synonymous.

I don't hold that belief.

I'm okay if you do.

But I think there are some contrasts to here.

In the rapture, the Bible says that in the rapture, he comes in the air.

In the second coming, it says that he comes on earth.

In the rapture, and that's Zechariah 14, 4.

Rapture, he comes for his bride.

In the second coming, it says he's coming with his bride.

And I can understand how you would get they come in the air, and then he comes with them.

I understand.

I don't agree, but I understand.

In the rapture, it says he comes like a thief in the night.

In the second coming, it says the whole earth will see him.

In the rapture, he comes before judgment.

In the second coming, he comes with judgment.

So people ask this to a pastor often.

Will we go through the tribulation?

This is one of the scriptures that I struggle with on that, and why I believe that we will not.

Revelation 3.10 says, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming to the whole earth.

So, what are you saying, Pastor?

I believe where it says there is now, therefore, no condemnation.

That there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.

Now, we can disagree.

And if you want to meet me in the lobby, that's fine.

There are tertiary differences.

Doesn't affect your salvation or worship of CCW.

And if you want to go through tribulation, you can.

It's just a joke.

Just a joke.

Okay?

But I can assure you Paul's purpose in writing about it, and John in Revelation, and Jesus in Matthew 24, was not to purport prophetic disunity.

He didn't want our eschatology disunifying the church.

Paul said, in fact, avoid vain babblings and foolish dissensions.

His desire was to produce hope.

And that's what I desired to share.

It made me think of number 505 in the hymnals when I was growing up.

505 for some reason had more energy and enthusiasm.

And as a seven, eight-year-old, looking at the old faces to me in that crowd at Pleasantville Baptist Church with dark wood pews and fire-armed pew seating, hideous.

And I looked up at their faces and they shouted these words, and I did not understand at the time.

At 44, as I reflected this week, I can understand the joy on the faces of those saints that's etched in my mind, and I can echo these words with them when the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more, and the morning breaks eternal, bright and fair, when the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore, and the roll is caught up yonder.

I'll be there.

Paul said, Young church, a day is coming.

Whatever you're going through, one day, hear me, church, whatever you're going through, whatever sickness, whatever turmoil, whatever tension, one day we're going to be caught up together with him.

And so he says, now disagree with one another on these words.

He says, So comfort one another with these words.

Let's look at the third thing.

Rest in the reassurance.

Verse 17 and 18, we'll read again.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Therefore, comfort one another with these words.

Letter A, as he was trying to share with this church about their questions, letter A is a reunion with loved ones.

A reunion.

You know, it sounds weird for me to say, but I enjoy is not the word, but the opportunity to preach at a funeral is something that I'll jump at faster than the opportunity to preach at a wedding.

I like both.

But at a funeral, like is a weird word, I'm sorry.

Uh, the opportunity, um, everyone at a funeral is thinking about last things.

Everyone there is sort of susceptible to a word from somebody.

They're looking for hope, and at a funeral, they're thinking about what is next.

And then they're thinking about what is most important with what I have.

And that perception is prime time for the Holy Spirit to come with a word.

And so when I think about those things, look at what he says here.

He uses the word, the King James Version of this, is ever will be.

And there we will ever will be.

That's permanence.

So to answer their question about their loved ones, we'll meet together in the air, and there ever we will be.

Hear me, church.

It says, we.

I got news for you, church.

We.

If you don't like church now, it's gonna be church forever in eternity.

We.

Christianity is not solidarity in eternity, it's we.

Psalms 116, verse 15.

Psalms 116:15

I'll quote this at many funerals.

How precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saint.

So at a funeral, you say, This is precious.

Why is it precious, Pastor?

Because at the final physical breath of this human existence, our fellowship is only interrupted.

Your last breath is only an interruption.

It's not terminated.

All those who know Christ will be reunited forever.

I got a picture of Callie that I want y'all to see.

One trip Heather took maybe it felt like 28 days.

She would tell me it was three weeks.

I don't remember.

She went to Texas and Callie was young.

And I flew, and I don't know what it is.

I don't know about y'all.

I could fly, I could fly out today and get back tomorrow.

And when I reunite with Heather, it would be like I'd been gone for a long time.

Oh, I'm so glad to see you again.

Like I made it through this flight, but flying does something like that.

And when I got to Calvin, I think, if I got this right, that this was one of the first times that I had been away from her as a child for a long time.

And this picture doesn't isn't the moment.

I just wanted to see her hugging me because that's what it was like.

So I got to her in Texas, got to Graham's house, and she saw me.

And she hadn't cried.

I've been on the phone with her, no real emotion.

But when she saw me in that lawn, she came to me quickly.

I grabbed a hold of her and it was it was a little bigger than that, but she squeezed my neck with a tight, I mean, like she was choking me on purpose, squeeze, and hugged me.

And her face, a little bit of glassiness in her eyes.

I might be, I might be exaggerating to say tears were flowing, but it feels like there were.

And she just held me and held me.

And you, listen, if you haven't been a parrot yet, you don't know joy like having little arms and little legs squeeze on you, a death grip like that.

There was so much love in that feeling.

I've got another picture I want you to see because one day, church, I'm gonna hug my mom again.

And my mom could hug me, and everything felt right with the world.

I haven't hugged my mom for over ten years, and I'm gonna hug Mimi, Heather's grandmother, who just said Heather's name with a hum.

Oh, Heather.

And I'm so sorry, but many of you here, you're gonna hug your father, and you're gonna hug your mother, and you're gonna hug a spouse that you lost, and some of you, the saint that left too soon, you're gonna hug.

And I know that it's sad here, but you will embrace again.

And I was pondering this point this week, and things that God's brought in our path this year, and I went to visit my dad, and y'all know you've been praying, and my dad was on the burn unit.

He was on fire for a minute, and the effects of that have lasted over 60 days.

He's home now, he's he's doing a lot better.

But when I was in the hospital visiting him, and the whole rush of all of it, you know, everybody calling, trying to figure out what's what, and then they worry about infection, and it was deadly for a little bit.

You're just worried about this and that.

But when I went on that unit visiting with my dad and walked down the halls of the unit, folks, I saw some horrifying things.

I saw people who I believe are not alive anymore.

I saw people that my dad had burns from his back to his calves.

I saw people, their whole face was disformed.

And as I walk through that burn and I consider this church, can I say this?

Life is too short, church.

This life is too short.

And can I plead with you?

Is there something that you need to do?

Is there something that you need to say?

Is there something you need to fix?

Is there something that you wish were different?

Well, what about a step?

If we're going to be in heaven together, what do we need to do to be on earth together?

Before our reunion in the air, do we need a union on the ground?

John 17, Jesus' last prayer.

And I want to say this as a pastor.

Look, I love y'all.

And if you need me, if there's something there I will meet and sit with and talk through anything, I don't want to be wrong with you if something is wrong.

I want to be transparent.

I want to shepherd.

But in John 17, I say that because in John 17, Jesus' last prayer before he went to the cross was this.

He said, Father, let my church be as one.

Let them be unified here on earth.

Why would he care so much of that?

He says, Because by their love for one another, it will show the world that they are my disciples.

And I want you to see this in Ephesians chapter 5.

Ephesians 5 · chapter mention

You've heard this, you've heard it in weddings, but I want you to hear the closing of this little passage, verse 25 through 27.

Why is all that so important?

Husbands love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her, that he might, listen to this, highlight this, that he might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of the water by the word, that he might present her to himself, a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she would be holy without blemish.

When Jesus Christ one day steps out and that trumpet sets forth and he goes for his bride, the Ephesians verse says that he would find you and me and this body and this church without spot, blemish, or wrinkle.

I don't want to be wrinkled when Jesus comes for me.

I don't want to have one spot.

Can you imagine a bride getting ready for her wedding?

Joni Erickson Tata talks about she was quadriplegic and she had a big wheelchair and it was clunky.

And as she was wheeling down to Ken, her husband, the wheelchair got caught on the hem of her dress, and a big grease stain hit her dress, and she was just crushed in the moment, thinking about who she was, thinking about her deformities, thinking about her smudged dress, thinking about her big clunky wheelchair, she said.

And then she said, But I looked up at Ken and everything was wiped away when I saw my bridegroom.

Church.

Look at verse 18.

Letter B.

Verse 18 is residency with the Lord.

Therefore, comfort one another with these words.

Comfort one another.

Comfort.

A lot of people when they hear end times or eschatology or last days, they approach that with fear and trepidation.

Even the phrase end times, I think, seems ominous to people.

And honestly, I don't know if I like the phrase myself because it doesn't represent what I think.

I don't think it's really an end of times.

It's actually the beginning of all of time.

And but we say this and people approach it in this manner, and they say, it's hard to be comforted when I think of this.

And I think that we're thinking of it in the wrong lens.

If you can understand what, to me, the greatest moments I've had on this earth, be with my bride, worshiping Jesus.

There's some moments that we've had that his presence felt so real that you could touch it.

And I never wanted to leave that moment.

And the best I can understand, and I'm feeling that through a human, flawed, diseased body and mind, but I'm feeling it.

And one day I'm gonna know that in a whole different way.

And it's not gonna be a moment that I don't want to get out of through a flawed, diseased, messed up mind.

It's gonna be eternity.

And so there's nothing on this earth that I can compare with that and go, you know what?

I got a house, I got a car, I got a promotion, my kids are happy with me today.

Nothing like being in the presence of God, so much so.

I want you to see this passage in Exodus.

Why is there hope in it?

Residency with the Lord.

In Exodus 33, 1 through 3, in chapter 32, the Israelites had created the golden calf.

And Moses comes down from the mountain, and then the Lord says this in verse 1 through 3, and then we'll look at verse 13.

Then the Lord said to Moses, Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying to your descendants, I will give it, and I will send my angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites and the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites, Hivites, Jebusites.

He says, Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey.

Hear this, church.

For I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.

God says to Moses, I'm my promise is sure.

I said it, I'll do it.

But I'm not gonna be a part of this.

Where everybody's serving some idol.

I'm not wanted, I'm not going.

Well, thank goodness for Moses.

Look down at verse 13.

Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in your shite, your sight, show me now your way, that I may know you and I may find grace.

And consider that this nation is your people.

And he said, My presence will go with you, Moses.

My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

Then Moses said to him, If your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.

For how then will it be known that your people and I have found grace in your sight?

Except you go with us.

So shall we separate your people and I from all the people who are upon the face of the earth?

Verse 17.

So the Lord said to Moses, I'll do this thing that you have spoken, for you have found grace in my sight, and I know you by name.

Moses said, If you're not going, I'm not going.

He said, I don't want the land, I don't want the victory, I don't want the blessing without your presence.

The scripture says, Thus we shall always be with the Lord.

I want you to think about this.

Who loved you in spite of you?

Who had grace for you?

Who has forgiven you?

Who didn't stop at giving his only son for you?

Who is worthy of your heart?

Who is worthy of your worship?

I know this when my heart stops and my breath terminates and my eyes close shut, when I'm absent from this body, I will be with the presence of the Lord.

His presence.

Imagine, church, imagine seeing his face, imagine hearing his voice.

Imagine holding Jesus' hands.

Imagine thanking him for the cross.

Imagine seeing perfectly.

Imagine feeling with completion.

Imagine perfect peace.

Imagine understanding intellectually with perfection.

Imagine this, church.

Not one more ache.

Imagine no more pain.

Imagine not one more tear.

Imagine no more frustration.

Imagine no more tension.

Hey, imagine no more Mondays.

Imagine no more rainy days.

Imagine no more needing a nap.

Like the songwriter wrote, Church.

I can only imagine.

I can only imagine.

Sharing a portion of Revelation 22.

This sermon's entitled, Behold He Comes.

In Revelation 22, God gave John the weathered exile of the island of Patmos, a vision.

And hear me, this is through a flawed man who lived in a flawed world, but God gave him a vision of something that we could try to understand.

And he said, From a pure river, from the throne of God, there will be no more curse in this place.

And the people that come there, they shall see the face of God and reign with him.

Then he said, Behold, I'm coming quickly.

In verse 8, he said, He's John said, I saw these things and I fell down in worship.

In verse 12, it says, Whatever work you're going to do, do it for the Lord, because the Lord Jesus says, Behold, I'm coming, and I'm coming quickly.

In verse 17, it says, The Spirit and the bride say, Come.

And let him who hears this say, Come, and let him who thirst come.

Because in verse 20, he who testified to these things said, I'm coming quickly.

And John closed and said, Amen.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

I want you to bow your heads and close your eyes this morning.

We're excited you joined us for today's message.
