change me to 970-00. Thank you and enjoy the message. And finally I have the lucky, lucky
-
honor of introducing our Hub City worship for the start of our June series which is Summer Jams.
-
And today's song is going to be The Maker by Daniel Lin-Wa.
-
I stand with arms wide open, I've run a twisted line,
-
I'm a stranger in the eyes of the maker.
-
Well I could not see, for the fog in my eyes,
-
And I could not feel, for the fear in my eyes.
-
From across the great divide, in the distance I saw a light,
-
John Baptiste walking to me with the maker.
-
My body, my body's been tampered with,
-
From alarm and dangerously.
-
I can't work with bills of paper, to turn my head away, I'm not a stranger in the hands of the maker.
-
Mother John, have you seen the homeless dog?
-
Standing there with broken bones, I have seen the flanking sun,
-
There are worries still beating, burning in the eyes of the maker.
-
I sit burning in the eyes of the maker.
-
I sit burning in the eyes of the maker.
-
Over and over again, from your sleep.
-
Over and over again, from your sleep.
-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep, from your sleep.
-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep.

-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep.
-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep.
-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep.
-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep.
-
Oh, river of rust, from your sleep.
-
And the first one is this, we have to daily choose to put to death our old sin nature.
-
Now one of the most positive words in the Bible has a negative connotation within our society.
-
In fact, our society has actually made it a negative word.
-
Do you want to hear what it is?
-
It's the word repent.
-
See repent doesn't mean repent.
-
Turn or burn that you hear in a growl from the man standing on the street corner.
-
Or repent is not the words you read on a banner that a woman is walking through a large crowd
-
of people with on New Year's Eve saying, you sinner.
-
That's not repent.
-
That's not repent. And that's not what God is trying to communicate to us.
-
Let me define it for you.
-
Can I define it for you?
-
This is repent.
-
I'm walking in this direction and I choose to go the other way.
-
Now is that a negative word?
-
That's what repentance is.
-
I'm walking in one direction, suddenly realize there's a better way and turn and go that way.
-
How do I know that?
-
Well, look at Acts 3, 19 to 20.
-
Now, everyone say now.
-
That means daily.
-
Repent.
-
Repent means, oh my gosh, people.
-
You know I'm an educator, right?
-
Repent means, thank you.
-
Now daily repent or turn of your sins and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped away.
-
Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord and will,
-
he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah.
-
I want you to hear this more than the very first time.
-
I want you to hear this more than the very air that I'm breathing this morning.
-
You can be refreshed today.
-
You are not a stranger in the eyes of the maker.
-
We can't control our circumstances but we can control what is happening inside of us.
-
And it all comes down to a choice.
-
See, David wrote these words after committing adultery and after having the husband of the woman
-
he committed adultery with, killed.
-
Not two of the best choices that he ever made in life but he wrote these words in Psalm 51.
-
Wash me clean of my guilt.
-
Curify me from my sin.
-
See, every single day I,
-
I, Chris needs to choose to put to death my sin nature.
-
Right?
-
I need to bury it.
-
For example, I have this tendency to be very impatient.
-
Very impatient.
-
And if I let that go in the wrong direction,
-
I suddenly can find myself becoming angry quickly.
-
See, I'm a leader and I like to take over things but the bad thing about that is
-
the bad thing about this quality that I have and that God has given me is that I tend to take on things
-
that I shouldn't take on because I want to or that others put on me.
-
For example, I could find myself driving to an appointment that I may be a few minutes late for
-
that I didn't really have time to schedule but I scheduled it anyway because I felt bad for this person
-
and I happen to get stuck behind a person that's not driving as fast as I need to be driving
-
and I get to that appointment and that can quickly lead me to sin because I'm impatient
-
and because that person is too old, shouldn't have a driver's license, is driving way too slow.
-
So that's anger, judgment.
-
Uh, let's see here what else.
-
Let's just say it's sin.
-
It's just sin.
-
It's a bad attitude.
-
It's just a lot of things rolled into one.
-
Amen? All right.
-
Now I know none of you have ever been there.
-
What we need to do though is we need to get rid of that old sin nature.
-
We got to give it to God.
-
Jesus, I'm giving you my day.
-
Lead me to take on what you have for me, not what someone else needs from me.
-
See, when you know your weakness,
-
when you know your struggle, whatever it is that's from the old sin nature,
-
you have to daily give it to God and you have to ask the Holy Spirit to control it.
-
Just let me, can I be honest with you?
-
See your sin nature, my sin nature, our sin nature, it's like a zombie.
-
For many of you, it's like a zombie apocalypse.
-
See, you bury it and then suddenly in the middle of the night,
-
it's right back there.
-
And God's saying, give it to me.
-
Romans 8, 12 to 13.
-
Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, and please be aware,
-
Paul is writing to you and me in this letter.
-
He's not writing to those outside of the church.
-
You have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
-
For if you live by its dictates, you will die.
-
And please understand, Paul's not talking about heaven or hell here.
-
When Jesus forgave your sins, he forgave all of them.
-
Past, present, and future.
-
I mean, think about it, the sins you haven't yet committed
-
are already paid for by Jesus' actions on the cross.
-
I don't know about you, but that's pretty good news.
-
Amen.
-
See, Paul is writing about the quality of life here on earth
-
and how we live in the present.
-
He's writing about the quality of life here on earth
-
and how we live our lives every day.
-
He continues, if through the power of the Spirit,
-
you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature,
-
you're gonna what?
-
You will live.
-
The daily choice.
-
God, I give you my anger.
-
God, I give you my lust.
-
God, I give you my impatience.
-
God, I give you my negativity.
-
Holy Spirit, overcome me with joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control.
-
See the difference?
-
Take it, God.
-
Fill me with your qualities.
-
Which leads us to our next step.
-
Friends, we have to daily choose to release our path
-
and take another step forward.
-
Again, listen to David here, Psalm 51, 7.
-
Purify me from my sins and I will be clean.
-
Wash me and I'll be whiter than snow.
-
See the first step, the first step that we did,
-
the old sin nature is about washing on the outside.
-
Getting rid of the outside.
-
David now references the inside.
-
He says cleanse me from the inside, God.
-
Cleanse me of those issues that I've been carrying around for way too long.
-
You know, those hurts, those pains, those addictions, that unforgiveness, those habits.
-
Oh, I need this.
-
Lies.
-
Because they're not God's best for your life.
-
See, in our daily time with God,
-
we have to not only ask God to help us with the issues that we know we have,
-
like we did in step one,
-
but we have to listen as well.
-
We have to ask, speak to God about the issues of the old nature.
-
We have to ask God and listen to the Holy Spirit about what he wants to change.
-
Holy Spirit, what do you want to change in me today?
-
And see, this is where the hard part is for many of you.
-
Because it's not just you and the Holy Spirit, it involves others.
-
See, look at James 5-16 from the message.
-
Make this your common practice.
-
Daily practice.
-
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other
-
so that you can live together whole and healed.
-
The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with.
-
Amen?
-
See, when we're honest with others,
-
when we open ourselves up to others,
-
then accountability happens, then cleansing happens, then change happens.
-
Now, next month we're going to do this really new, cool, interesting series called Grace Bomb.
-
And see, there's been a lot of bombs going off in our culture lately,
-
and those bombs are all negative derivatives of hate, death, and destruction.
-
But that's just not God's best.
-
See, we believe in living in God's best,
-
and we believe that if we bomb people with grace,
-
they'll be overwhelmed with this love and life change will happen. Amen?
-
So it's our goal next month, for the month of July,
-
to launch five Grace Bomb groups.
-
You say, what's that mean, Chris?
-
Well, we want five people or couples to host five groups in their house,
-
and this is how I saw it.
-
You know, I thought bigger.
-
I think backyard, barbecue, fire pit, hanging around,
-
talking about Jesus and how you can bomb people with grace.
-
Doesn't that sound like fun?
-
Like, who would go to that? I would go to that, wouldn't you?
-
Like, some of you wouldn't go to that?
-
Yeah, I feel bad for you.
-
You really don't want to have fun.
-
You need to go find one of those churches that don't have fun.
-
Like, I want to have fun in here.
-
So here's what it takes.
-
It takes five people to step up and say,
-
I want to be a Grace Bomb group leader.
-
Okay?
-
And I believe there's five people in here or couples that want to be a Grace Bomb.
-
Doesn't that just sound cool? Grace Bomb group leader.
-
Like, that just sounds cool.
-
And there's this guy over here on my left named Rudy.
-
Can you stand up, Rudy? Some people don't know you.
-
He's got these cool sunglasses on and an Elvis shirt.
-
I don't know why he likes Elvis because we're singing Daniel Lin-Wild today,
-
but we'll forgive him for that.
-
He wants to meet with you at the Welcome Hub right after this so that you can host a group.
-
Is that okay?
-
And see, some of you need to step out and be a host.
-
And you say, well, Chris, I've never did a group before.
-
I can't lead a group. Yes, you can.
-
We give you all the material.
-
Like, we put it in your hand. We say, okay, this is what you do.
-
Take this material.
-
Pray. Read it.
-
Pray for each other.
-
Pretty simple, right?
-
All right, so I need five of you to see Rudy right after this at the Welcome Hub.
-
And if there's ten of you, even better.
-
And if there's twenty, let's get it on, right?
-
Let's go after it because it's a part of living a life of abundance,
-
which leads us to our next step.
-
We have to daily choose to pursue God's plan.
-
Psalm 51, 10 through 11.
-
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
-
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
-
Do not banish me from your presence and don't take your Holy Spirit from me.
-
We have to daily learn to pray.
-
Jesus, lead me. Guide me.
-
Jesus, I want to be used by you today to share the good news.
-
Romans 12, 2 says, don't copy the behavior and customs of this world,
-
but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think
-
and you'll learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
-
And here's the problem with our society.
-
See, our society and many people within the church that live within our society
-
believe that our plans are better than God's.
-
Well, that's not what I want to do, God.
-
This is what I want to do.
-
And see, within our society, there's a spirit of just individualism.
-
And they want to do what they want to do whenever they want to do it.
-
And that's just not God's best.
-
In fact, it's a lie of the enemy.
-
God's plan is good and pleasing and perfect.
-
And we want to challenge you to walk in those plans for your life.
-
And this is one way we're going to do it, man.
-
This summer is going to be incredible.
-
I feel like God's going to explode in this place.
-
This is the first Sunday.
-
And typically, we had pray first on the first Sunday of every month.
-
Right?
-
When we started pray first, we'd come back here at 6 o'clock
-
and we'd pray for our community of faith, our community, our state,
-
our what country, the U.S. and the world.
-
I don't even know where we live.
-
Geez.
-
I live somewhere.
-
Don't know where.
-
Anyway, when we started pray first, we had 20, 30 people that would come.
-
Then it dwindled to 10.
-
Then it dwindled to 5.
-
And then the last time we did it was 2.
-
So in other words, a kind of lost team.
-
Like, I get it.
-
It's tough to come back on Sunday nights.
-
You've already been to church.
-
You check that box.
-
I'm good.
-
I'll pray, but I'm going to pray from home.
-
So I'm like, all right, cool.
-
We can do that.
-
So what we're going to do this summer is challenge you to take prayer walks.
-
So once a week, not once a month, we want to challenge you to go somewhere
-
and take a prayer walk.
-
And you say, well, Chris, what does that mean?
-
Well, you can go to Halfway Park, walk their beautiful natural trail over and back.
-
And the whole time you do it, pray.
-
Pray for yourself.
-
Pray for our community of faith.
-
Pray for our community.
-
And just take a walk and connect with God.
-
That's a good thing, right?
-
And see, it's also good you're connecting with God.
-
But we're also instilling in you healthy habits because what are you doing while you pray?
-
You're walking.
-
And guess what?
-
Someone you need to start walking.
-
OK?
-
All right.
-
There's no judgment here.
-
I'm just saying it's good for you.
-
It's good for you to walk.
-
And we need to get out there and walk.
-
And if you need a reason to start walking, why not pray and walk?
-
That's the best reason possible.
-
So I want to challenge you once a week to go into your neighborhood,
-
go to Fairgrounds Park, go to Robinwood Medical Center and walk their halls.
-
I don't really care where you go.
-
And spend time praying and walking.
-
Well, Chris, how long should I do that?
-
As long as the Holy Spirit tells you to.
-
Five minutes, ten minutes.
-
You can find yourself on the canal walking and praying at maybe an hour.
-
It's OK.
-
Prayer is a good thing that's going to impact and change your life.
-
Now, when it comes to purpose also, we believe that all of you have a role to play in our community faith.
-
You already heard me share today.
-
Start with why I would love to share with you about our church, why it began, where we're going, where God's leading us to.
-
I'll meet you in the family room right after this gathering so that you can plug in and become a part.
-
Remember, this is all about joy.
-
Right, David?
-
Wash me.
-
Clean me.
-
Create in me.
-
And finally, our final step, daily choose to live a life of impacting others.
-
Psalm 51, 12 to 13.
-
Restore to me the joy of your salvation.
-
Now, some of you are like, well, what is it?
-
What is joy to your salvation?
-
What does that even mean, Chris?
-
It's the next sentence.
-
Make me willing to obey you.
-
Then I will teach your ways to rebels and they will return to you.
-
See, my life begins to impact others when I reach out to those that are lonely, when I reach out to those that are poor and give to them,
-
when I grab a hold of the addicted and invite them in.
-
We make a difference when we reach out to people in need.
-
You will never experience the joy of your salvation until you do something for other people.
-
If you're not doing anything for other people, there's no joy of salvation because you're not sharing it.
-
Now, some of you are like, well, Chris, of course you're sharing the joy of your salvation.
-
You're a pastor.
-
You're on the stage.
-
It's your job.
-
You're supposed to write up these sermons that tell us about the joy of your salvation.
-
You know what I'm going to say to you?
-
Don't ask me.
-
Okay?
-
When you leave here, go find Mike Shriver.
-
He's out in the parking lot parking cars.
-
Say, Mike, why are you helping to park cars?
-
Go find Frank or Pete.
-
Pete gave you a bulletin or Frank held a door open for you and high-fived you on the way in.
-
Why are you giving me a bulletin?
-
Why are you holding doors?
-
How about Nikki?
-
She made you a cup of coffee and put it in your hand.
-
Go talk to Cheryl or John or Tim.
-
They're teaching your kids.
-
And say, why are you doing this?
-
And you know what they're going to say?
-
No, it's not service work.
-
It's to give back to God.
-
It's bigger than volunteerism.
-
It's about sharing the good news of the gospel with other people that want to hear it,
-
hoping that they can make a difference in the lives of others.
-
Amen?
-
And that's all good news.
-
It's our desire that you do the same.
-
You say, well, Chris, what does this have to do with the song that I heard this morning?
-
Well, Daniel Lemoy wrote about homeless daughters.
-
Right?
-
And those homeless daughters are referencing the prostitutes.
-
And notice they were standing with broken wings.
-
Church, don't forget about the people that are hurting in our world.
-
Don't walk away from them.
-
Don't turn your head.
-
Don't judge them.
-
Hebrews 13, 16 says, don't forget to do good and to share with those in need.
-
These are the sacrifices that please God.
-
Notice from the message, make sure you don't take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good.
-
Share what you have with others.
-
God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship, a different kind of sacrifice that takes place in the kitchen, the workplace, and on the streets.
-
See, none of this happens.
-
None of this happens unless you make and take these steps each and every day.
-
It's a daily choice.
-
See, my dream is not that you show up here on Sundays.
-
That's not my dream.
-
Now, do I want you to come here on Sundays?
-
Do I want to have sick services?
-
Do I want to have multiple places and plant churches?
-
I want to do that because I want to see God's kingdom invade this place.
-
But I don't want to see you just show up on Sundays and go through the motions.
-
I did that for 22 years of my life and it got me nowhere.
-
I want to see you show up, begin making the difference in the lives of others, and walking in God's plan for your life.
-
Because that's the good news.
-
See, joy is more than a feeling.
-
It's a way of living.
-
And so many of us aren't walking in it.
-
But God is inviting you into that encounter today.
-
Now, this past Wednesday, I checked off a bucket list item and I got to see one of my favorite bands live down at FedExField.
-
I got to go see Coldplay.
-
It was a really cool experience because all my kids went with me.
-
Not all of them, but my older kids went with me.
-
It was Zoe's graduation gift.
-
My wife was supposed to go with me, but we had an unfortunate accident at home and she had to take care of our Nolan.
-
And that's okay.
-
That's a part of being a mom or dad.
-
And it's funny, you go to these concerts, right?
-
A hundred thousand plus people fill in a stadium.
-
Probably one of the best shows, if not the best show I've ever been a part of in my life.
-
But more importantly, it drew me closer to God.
-
And you're like, what?
-
What do you mean it drew you closer to God?
-
I had encounters with Jesus at that concert that I've had nowhere else.
-
And you're like, really?
-
Yeah, this is the lyrics from one of their songs.
-
God gave you style and gave you grace and put a smile upon your face.
-
See, in so many people, they want to write off stuff.
-
Yet in reality, God wants to use everything.
-
God wants to use everything in your life to grow your relationship with Jesus.
-
But you just got to be open to receiving it.
-
You got to be open to growing in it.
-
You got to be open to changing.
-
And here's what I felt like the Holy Spirit whispered to me this morning to close this gathering.
-
God is inviting you to make a choice this morning.
-
Now, if you got a bulletin on your way in, open it up.
-
If you didn't get a bulletin, put your hand up.
-
Did anybody not get a bulletin? Put your hand up.
-
All right, Gary, can you get, is Gary in here?
-
Oh, he's not here. He left me.
-
Oh, he's got post-its. I was going to give him post-its.
-
Sorry, Gary bailed on us.
-
Geez.
-
Just judge him. It's okay.
-
Just judge him.
-
I'm just kidding. Don't judge him, please.
-
Anyway, in your bulletin, there's a post-it.
-
It's there for a purpose.
-
Okay?
-
I felt like God told me to put a post-it over your outline.
-
And that as I was sharing during this Sunday gathering,
-
he was going to be whispering in your ears that little area, not 10, 1,
-
that he desires for you to work on.
-
He desires for you to change.
-
He desires for you to give back to him.
-
So I'm going to invite the Holy Spirit to come.
-
All right?
-
We're going to listen to God for a minute or so.
-
After you listen to God, if he highlights something,
-
I want you to write it on that post-it.
-
And then I want you to look up here to this screen.
-
And I want you to take a look at that cross.
-
Okay?
-
All right?
-
I want you to look back down at your post-it.
-
I want you to look back up at that cross.
-
And then I'm going to have you ball it up
-
and throw it in the trash on your way out before you high-five me.
-
Because that's where it needs to be.
-
So Holy Spirit, come.
-
Speak to us this morning, God.
-
Whisper into our spirit, into our ears.
-
What is it that you desire for me to change this morning?
-
What is that one thing that you desire for me to focus on?
-
Habit, addiction, sin, an old nature, attitude.
-
God, give me the courage to write it down and give it to you, God.
-
And Holy Spirit, I invite, as this act of obedience happens, God,
-
that you literally, supernaturally remove it from my friends.
-
That you change us and you make us more like Jesus.
-
God, come now.
-
Come, Holy Spirit.
-
I want you to look up at the cross.
-
Look at what you wrote down.
-
Ball it up.
-
Ball it up.
-
That deserves to be in the trash as you leave this place.
-
Amen?
-
I said this during the first gathering, but this was a really good sermon.
-
And we needed to hear it.
-
Now if we could all go to that place of prayer.
-
There's some of you that have come in here that just, you're not in that relationship.
-
Maybe you've run away from God.
-
Maybe you've never started that journey.
-
Maybe you're just struggling.
-
You're sin.
-
God wants to set you free this morning.
-
Jesus is inviting you into that closeness.
-
So no one looking around, it's a private thing between individuals and God.
-
If there's anyone here like that, just flip your hand up.
-
Is there anyone here like that?
-
God.
-
We all just pray this prayer together.
-
Jesus, I'm broken.
-
I'm full of doubt.
-
Shame.
-
Regret.
-
Sin.
-
Change me.
-
I believe you're God's son.
-
I believe you died for me.
-
Fill me with the Holy Spirit.
-
And give me opportunities.
-
Back to others.
-
In Jesus' name.
-
Now listen, if you prayed that prayer, whether you raised your hand or not, text me, please.
-
Just put that number in, right change me.
-
I will follow up with you this week.
-
I'll be praying for you this week.
-
I'll give you next steps on how to grow this relationship with God.
-
If you're joining us from home, thank you for welcoming us into your home.
-
If you're here within our community of faith, I need you to do three things.
-
Okay, you ready?
-
Three things.
-
One, is God calling you to lead a grace bomb group.
-
If so, see Rudy at the welcome hub.
-
Okay.
-
Two, maybe you need to start this journey within our community of faith.
-
Because many of you are just, you show up, sit down, leave.
-
Show up, sit down, leave.
-
That's not growth.
-
God wants you plugged in and used to make a difference.
-
And three, okay, I need you to look at your neighbors.
-
Tell them how much God loves them and encourage them while I leave and get to the back door before you.
-
Can you do that?
-
All right. God bless you guys.
-
Thank you.
