Welcome to our Build Back series.

This Sunday and every Sunday this month we are interviewing volunteer leaders in our

church to find out why they serve and to learn more.

My name is Ashley Torres and this is my husband.

Michael Torres.

And we're here to talk with you this morning.

Okay so question for Mike.

In what ways do we serve here at HCV?

We serve, you serve in the cafe and I serve on the transportation team and the safety

team.

How long have you been serving cafe?

So I've been serving cafe since we entered the new building and one of those first team

up Sundays I joined the cafe team which is ironic because I don't like coffee but I love

serving on cafe.

So those are the teams that we serve on.

We also serve in a lot of HCV events right?

Yes.

The backpack giveaway, the Thanksgiving dinner and the shoes.

When we do Angel Tree, a donut drop, we've given away flowers and the square.

Just anytime that we have the opportunity to serve we come out.

Hey by the way how did you get into serving?

I got into serving through team up and I think it was one of those days that Chris changed

everything up and made Kelsey go from the hub to inside the auditorium and I picked

cafe but do you remember how you got signed up for transportation?

By you.

You were kind of voluntold.

I was in the shower where you have your best thoughts and one day God just said Mike's

going to drive the van when we get the van so I called him in the bathroom and I said

hey guess what you're going to drive that van.

And I do have a little bit of background in it because I drove for college.

You drove that college van a lot.

And so that's how we started serving on the teams that were on.

So big question, why do we serve, why do you serve?

We serve because we feel closer to God.

Serving others just helps us, it helps with also our two children.

Getting them, bringing them in to serve on our teams and help showing them that there's

people that you won't even recognize that just need to be helped.

Yeah I think it's the best way to bring glory to God and I find serving as worship for me.

Even when I don't want to wake up really early on a Sunday morning I feel called to be there

and you know kind of once you get into it there's so much joy that comes from serving

others.

So any advice you would give to the people in our church?

Just do it.

I know that sounds really really simple but jumping in, getting uncomfortable, being comfortable

with being uncomfortable and trying something new, meeting people.

We have tons of teams, try one out, it's not for you, pick another one.

Yep and just be able to be uncomfortable.

You know it was the same way for me.

I was uncomfortable and then I got into a team and now I feel like it's a family.

Yeah.

There's no impossible.

I believe that you are working now.
