Well, good morning, everyone.

So good to see everybody here for our Summer Jam series.

If you're joining us from home, thank you for welcoming us into your home.

Reminder, this series is about discovering God in our everyday life.

The songs that have been chosen for this series are simply tools

that we use to assist us in discovering God's truth for our everyday lives.

We at HCV are in no way telling you to go out and download Tracy Chapman,

but if you want to, go for it. It's a pretty good song.

Two weeks ago, we kicked off this series by discussing loneliness

through the song Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day.

Last week, we heard Give It Away by the Red Hot Chili Peppers,

and we were challenged to live a generous life.

You heard Give Me One Reason, a song written and recorded

by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman.

This is, in fact, Chapman's biggest U.S. hit to date,

reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996.

It's also her biggest hit in Australia, Canada, and Iceland,

for those of you that wanted to know.

I found it interesting that they keep charts in Iceland.

I didn't even know they listen to music there.

Ironically enough, Chapman first performed this song

six years previous to its release when she was a musical guest

on the Christmas episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1989.

Chapman actually earned a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song

for the song Give Me One Reason, and upon hearing the song,

everyone immediately focuses on a collapsing relationship, right?

A relationship where the other partner isn't taking it seriously.

It could be a marriage.

It could just be a girlfriend or boyfriend.

Who knows?

And so many people relate directly to that theme and to those lyrics.

However, I kind of felt a nudge by God to take today's discussion

in a little different direction, and here's why.

In an interview with Charlie Rose on the BBC in 1995,

before the release of this famous song, Chapman shared this.

I actually felt like I had enough of the music business.

It was wonderful to have success on the first record,

and it created so many opportunities for me.

It made my life better on a material level.

So all that was really great, but it also kind of caused stress

for a person who likes to be kind of private.

See, her second and third albums did not find the success

of her initial hit, Fast Car,

and it really made Tracy Chapman begin to question life.

She would even go on to say in the interview,

I want to do something other than be in a business

that sometimes doesn't seem like it values the artistic side,

focusing only on money.

See, what if, what if it took six years for Chapman to release this song

because there's actually a deeper message

where we have to be open-minded enough to receive it and notice it?

What if she is talking about life,

although this is clearly disguised to make you believe she sings about love?

Truth is, there comes a point in most everyone's life

where the pressure to be a person that is making a difference

outweighs what we are actually doing with our life.

Where do I fit? Where do I belong? What's the meaning of life?

See, Tracy Chapman sings passionately about the negative emotional thoughts

she is feeling towards life.

Give me a reason to stay here, she sings.

I don't want to leave you lonely.

You've got to make me change my mind.

What if Tracy Chapman is pleading to be given her life back,

to be set back on a correct course that is making a difference?

I learned that she truly was a deeply caring person.

She wanted the world to be a better place,

and she wanted to be a person that made a difference within the world.

However, she also struggled with the reality that there was war,

and people starving, and people going without,

and she was constantly confronted with that every day,

and it made her heart long for change.

Don't we all deal with that?

Simply turn the news on, and there's not a lot of good news out there,

and suddenly we can find ourselves questioning life.

What is the meaning of life?

Why am I here? What am I called to do?

Question this morning.

How would you live your life differently if you only had 30 days to live?

What would change? What people would you connect with?

I kind of reflected on that this week,

and I began to realize that the majority of things that I do in life

on a weekly basis that I constantly am saying yes to would absolutely change,

because the time with my family, time with my friends,

the time here with all of you sharing the good news,

challenging you to grow, it's very special to me,

and that is in fact what really matters.

But what would change in your life?

How would your life be different if you only had 30 days to live,

which leads us to our first thought this morning, you see.

Human existence is but a breath.

In Psalmist writes this in Psalm 39,

Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.

Remind me that my days are numbered, that my life is fleeing away.

My life is no longer than the width of my hand.

An entire lifetime is just a moment to you.

Human existence is but a breath.

See, friends, we aren't promised tomorrow.

In fact, Jesus challenges us that we're not even to worry about tomorrow.

Don't think about it. Don't focus on it.

You know, I'm a person that really takes care of myself.

I believe in diet. I believe in exercise.

I believe in healthy living. And why do I do that?

Well, because I want to be around for my children.

I want to take care of my family.

I want to meet my grandchildren.

But here's the reality.

Next week, I could climb on an airplane and that plane could go down.

Today, I could climb in my car and head home and suddenly find myself in an accident.

Next week, I could become sick and within six months pass away.

I mean, some of you think I'm going to have a heart attack every Sunday that I'm sharing.

The possibilities are endless.

And see, friends, that's why it's so important to live life 100% in the moment.

See, we've got to be willing to give thanks to God all of the time.

We don't want to come to that point in life where we question and say,

give me a reason to stay here. Give me a reason, God.

James 414 says, how do you know what your life will be like tomorrow?

Your life is like a morning fog. It's here a little while and then it's gone.

Friends, life is brief. We're here a little while and gone.

And there's these three divine turning points that I'm praying that God's Spirit just unleashes into your heart this morning.

Three divine turning points that if all of us look at them and focus on them,

we would find ourselves a reason to be here, a reason to stay here in this life, which leads us to our next song.

See, we need to turn when into now.

Each and every day we need to ask God to take over our lives and turn our whens into now.

There are so many people that are literally wishing their life away,

saying such things that, well, when such and such happens, then life will really matter.

One day when everything is just perfect the way I want it to be, then I can serve God.

There are so many people within our society that are making these when then statements.

If you're a single person, maybe you've heard yourself say, one day when I get married, then I'll be happy.

And maybe the person who's out of shape, well, I'm out of shape.

If I just lose some weight, Chris, then I'll begin to exercise.

One day when I get out of debt, then I'll start to give.

Then I'll make a difference in those that are less fortunate.

One day when my career is established and my family is financially strong, then I'll volunteer to coach my children in sports.

One day when my kids are older, then I'll invest in my marriage.

But there's just not enough time now.

See, the problem, friends, this morning is we have to realize is that then rarely comes.

It's just a bunch of words. When then?

And see, the challenge this morning is we have to allow ourselves to turn.

Those statements in the now.

And God desires that we do that.

I mean, if you haven't realized it, life flying by.

Yesterday, we had two of our good friends, actually our neighbors from Syracuse.

They came down to visit their son in D.C. and they had an extra day.

They popped into the cornhole tournament. They wanted to see the building.

And they wanted to see all that God was doing in our community of faith.

And Kathy came up to me and gave me a hug.

And we started sharing and reminiscing about the children and see our oldest children.

Her youngest, my oldest son, were best friends, like just childhood best friends.

And she looked back at me and she goes, can you believe that we have children so old?

My oldest son is 22 years old.

You know what I said, I look back at her and said, can you believe I have a son so young?

See, I started all over.

I don't know if you remember that or not, but we just got to talk.

And as you show me pictures of the boys together and it just really makes you step back

and reminisce the good old days of Syracuse.

You know, where our children grew up playing wiffle ball in the street.

And it was a dead end street and the whole neighborhood would come out and play wiffle ball.

And they'd hit them off people's houses. And it was it was just fun.

But it feels like a lifetime ago.

Friends, life just flies by.

You who say today or tomorrow, we are going to a certain town and we'll stay there a year.

We will do business there and make a profit.

How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow?

See, here's the problem, friends.

Many of us were just so busy.

We're busy, worried about the next thing that we have to do that we forget about what's right in front of us.

You know, maybe this is God's assignment for you that no matter where you are,

if you're with your wife, if you're with your husband, if you're with your kids,

if you're with a good friend, if you're with people at work, if you're with a classmate,

no matter where you are, make sure you're all there.

Make a point to be present, be all in.

If you have children, you know, don't take the phone outside with you.

Work can wait till tomorrow. Your children need your time.

Engage with them.

If you're with your spouse and you're spending quality time, turn the TV off.

The next episode isn't going anywhere. It's in the cloud.

And be present, fully engaged with them.

If you're talking with someone at work or school, make them feel special

because of the way you're engaging them in conversation.

Make them feel important.

Wherever you are, be there.

Turn the whens into nows.

Just tell them you start living because if you don't, life's going to be gone.

Psalm 118, 24. This is the day the Lord has made.

We will rejoice and be glad in it.

We will rejoice and be glad in it.

You know what that scripture, it means that we celebrate life.

We don't wake up looking at life as a drag.

No, we wake up and we invite the Holy Spirit to allow us to celebrate what He's given us.

I mean, look at Proverbs 27. Don't brag about tomorrow

since you don't know what the day will bring.

I mean, you may have the best plans for a perfect vacation,

but it's an eight-hour drive in the car with your kids.

You need to be focusing on God to allow your spirit to give me peace.

Turning points.

We need to turn our whens into now, which leads us to our next song.

Friends, we need to turn our intentions into actions.

I mean, if we're all honest and we look in the mirror,

most people have seriously good intentions about life, dreams, if you will.

But many haven't gotten around to doing anything.

Many allow those dreams and those intentions to pass them by.

James 4.17, remember, it is a sin to know what you ought to do and then don't do it.

I mean, that's one of those verses that people just kind of hop over.

That's in the Bible? Yep, right there it is.

Nicholas Murray Butler was the president of Columbia University in New York,

shared this at one of his commencement speeches.

The vast population of this earth may readily be divided into three groups.

There are a few who make things happen.

There are many more who watch things happen,

and the overwhelming majority who have no notion of what happens.

Every human being is born into the third and largest group.

It is for himself or herself, his or her environment, his or her education

to determine whether they will rise to the second or even the first group.

What are your good intentions?

What is it that God wants you to do that you haven't yet done?

I mean, think about it.

We're all called, if you're in a relationship with Jesus, to share the good news.

You know, maybe God wants you to reach out to someone who doesn't know Jesus yet,

and you keep putting it off.

They won't receive it. They're not ready.

How do you know?

Maybe God wants you to build a friendship with someone you don't like.

You know, maybe that someone needs encouragement.

Maybe that someone needs appreciated to be made to feel valuable, and you're the one.

Maybe you're called to reach out and thank that person that made a difference in your life,

and you haven't done it yet.

What good intentions haven't you followed through on?

I mean, you hear me week after week after week.

Maybe God wants to use your gifts, your talents, your abilities right here at HCV.

But yet, because of the pain, it's just so painful, Chris.

My last church, I just can't get over it. I'm scarred.

We're not that church.

Get over it.

Right? Well, it's not that easy. It is. It's called forgiveness.

We're all forgiven. Extend some forgiveness and serve.

You know, maybe God wants you to reconnect intimately with your spouse.

Okay? Do it. Stop making excuses. Stop blaming the kids.

Maybe God is calling you to reach out to one of those children that you wrote off that's hurt you.

Don't put it off. Don't live with regret.

Maybe someone has hurt you and God just wants you to forgive them so that you can walk in freedom.

Maybe you've hurt somebody and God highlights that in your life and you need to apologize.

What good intentions do you have that you haven't yet acted on?

Because let me tell you, if you don't act on them, you're going to be like Tracy singing that song,

give me a reason to live.

Regret is one of those things that will catch up to you.

I should have done this. I wish I would have done this.

If I only would have spent more time with my kids, I poured all my energy into gaining material success

and praise from other people.

Oh, it matters is praise from God.

I mean, friends, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us.

We have the difference to be able to bring his supernatural power into others.

Do it.

Stop allowing life to pass you by.

See, if we became a people, there's this verse that I always use in my pre-marital counseling

and there's this verse in the Bible that says never let the sun go down on your anger.

Don't let it go down. Forgive each other. Move forward.

Extend forgiveness, grace to each other. I believe in that verse 100%.

Well, what if, what if we never let the sun go down on things that we know we're supposed to get done?

We would be a people that are making a difference.

Look at Proverbs 3, 27 to 28 from the message paraphrase.

Never walk away from someone who deserves help.

Your hand is God's hand for that person.

Don't tell your neighbor, maybe some other time, or try me tomorrow when the money's right in your pocket.

I got a testimony to share with me on Tuesday.

A young lady sent me a text and she sent me a text saying, man, I had to share this.

Remember last week I shared about generosity and giving it away.

She was, I was out at the carnival with my family, with my kids and just walking around.

We were having a good time and I walked by the rubber ducky booth and there was this little, little boy,

you know, three, four years old and he, and she was walking by.

She, she heard him say, hey mom, can I, can I play this?

Can I try to win a stuffed animal? Can I pull a duck?

And she said, no, we don't need money for that.

And she said immediately, I heard the Holy Spirit, I heard God say to me, give them $10.

And she goes, I turned right around, went to the mom and said here, will you please buy him this game and allow him to play?

She goes, I walked away just feeling so good.

And it wasn't about me doing anything, but it was just about hearing the excitement and the boys,

just anticipation of playing a rubber ducky game.

See, we never know what a simple act of kindness is going to do.

Which then leads us to our next thought, our next turning point, number four.

Friends, we got to turn a whole heart toward Jesus.

You know, at the end of the song of Tracy Chapman sings these words from the perspective of the other person in the relationship.

So she sings the, basically the majority of the song from kind of her perspective.

You know, hey, give me one reason to turn around.

Why, you know, should I come back?

Why shouldn't I?

And then at the very end, she flips it and speaks from the other person's perspective.

She says this, but baby, just give me one reason.

Give me just one reason why I should stay.

Because I told you that I loved you and there ain't no more to say.

See, I believe that's God speaking to you this morning.

God loves you and he wants you to hear that.

And there ain't no more to say.

He laid down his life for you and he desires his love and his grace and his forgiveness to just overwhelm you this morning.

In James 415, it tells us what you ought to say if you're in a relationship, Jesus.

If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.

That's called spirit led life.

You see, the problem today, there's too many people that are just turning a portion of their life toward Jesus.

You know, the fall was right around the corner and of course, late in the fall, kind of in the fall, you hear about the flu shots coming out.

Everybody goes and gets a flu shot every year.

Some do, some don't.

It's up to you, of course.

But when you go, the doctor injects you just a little bit of the flu, just a little bit.

And the theory is if you give just a little bit of the flu, it makes your body resistant to the whole thing.

Here's what I believe.

I believe in many churches across the United States.

There's people who've gotten a little bit of Jesus.

So many people say, yeah, I'm doing life on my own terms.

I pursue what I want.

Everything's good.

Hey, Jesus, give me a high five.

You know, we'll take a shot of Jesus here and there.

You show up to church, I'll give you an hour, Jesus.

I'll get my praise on.

I'll get that shot.

I'll give you a dollar as long as I get a little bit in return.

But I'm doing my own thing.

I'm only going to give you a little bit.

I'll listen to some worship music on the way to work, get my attitude right.

When I struggle, I'm going to ask you to help me.

Help me, Jesus.

See, here's the problem with a little bit of Jesus.

It makes you resist all of Jesus.

Just like your body resists that flu, getting a little bit of it.

If you just go after a little bit of Jesus, you're going to reject the whole thing.

And life is brave, friends.

You know, I share with you verse after verse, you're a mist.

Your life is no longer than your hand.

And we have to come to a point of saying, if you want to be successful in life,

if you want to make a difference in life, you got to give it all to him.

Can't just be about you doing your own thing.

You have to come to a point in life where you say, I don't want this sin to destroy my relationship anymore.

I want to know your truth, your power, your love, your grace, your mercy.

I want all of you, not just a little bit.

And see, there's this story in Mark chapter 12 that constantly challenges me and makes my heart break.

See, Jesus was having a conversation with different people and someone asked him,

hey, Jesus, what's some of the support and commandment?

Jesus said, well, you just love the Lord God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

And the second is like you love your neighbors yourself.

And one of the people that gathered there was a religious leader.

He looked on and said, Jesus, you have spoken the truth.

And I believe that truth and I'm living it.

That's when Jesus says some words that that always challenge me.

This is what the Bible said. This is Jesus response in Mark 12, 34.

Realizing how much the man understood, Jesus said to him, you are not far from the kingdom of God.

And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

See, Jesus is saying, hey, you're close, but you're not there yet.

And I'll just be honest with you, friends, one of my greatest fears for all of you,

anybody that walks into this place on a Sunday morning,

is that you're not far from the kingdom of God.

Sure, you're in church. You may understand some things about Jesus.

You may even have a testimony about what Jesus did in your life 30 years ago.

Tell me what he's doing now.

Because if you don't have a testimony about what he's doing now,

are you even in a relationship with him?

Or are you just giving him a little bit of your time?

So I want to challenge you this morning.

Do you know the power, the truth, the love of Jesus? And do you know it personally?

Because that scripture just screams out, you're close, but you're just not there.

You have a little bit, but you don't have all.

That's why we need to turn our when into now.

That's why we need to turn our intentions into actions.

That's why we need to give our whole heart to Jesus.

And friends, I'll just be honest with you, we need to do it now.

We need to live in the moment. We need to be present.

We need to be available for people.

Because friends, that's the meaning of life, and it won't allow us to go through life saying,

give me one reason to live.

Give me one reason to stay in this marriage.

Give me one reason to continue working.

Give me one reason. There's all these rea... you know, these...

It's about giving him your all.

So I just want to look at four simple ways of living in the moment each and every day.

That if we put this into practice, because this is what Jesus did,

we will live in that moment. And the first is this, you got to see people how they could be.

There's this blind man in Mark chapter 8.

Mark 8 · chapter mention

They arrived at Bethsaida and some people, they brought this blind man to Jesus and they say,

hey Jesus, touch him, heal him.

Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out to the village.

Let him out of the village, excuse me, then spitting on the man's eyes,

he laid his hands on him and asked, can you see anything now?

Now this is one of those miracles that, you know, I just can't explain.

I have no idea why he's spitting his eyes.

And in fact, you know something? I don't even want to know why.

I'm just... this is my interpretation. God told him to.

God told him to.

And I just want to encourage you, listen, Jesus didn't give up on this man.

You know, they brought this man, he was blind. Jesus didn't give up on him, took him to the side.

And he wanted this man to be healed.

And we have to realize extending grace is not about condoning

or accepting someone's unkind words, hurtful actions, or even their sins.

It is saying that there is more to them than their imperfections.

See friends, each and every person is created in God's image.

And even though we don't always act like Jesus, we still identify with him.

He is the light of the world. And what are we called to do?

We're called to reflect that light.

Truth. When I focus on others' faults, I dim their light, but I also dim my own.

Maybe the reason you're so negative in life is because you're just focusing on everyone else's faults.

We can never know someone's true intentions, but God wants us to assume the very best.

Because it will make our lives better. When we start judging others, guess what?

The judgment seeps into our heart and it begins to taint how we love.

True, genuine, unconditional love is transformational and it can transform even the hardest heart.

I don't care who the person is. Which leads us to our next step.

Look, you got to see growth as a process. Mark 8.24, the man looked around.

Yes, he said, I see people. Which he was blind and now he sees people,

but I can't see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.

Okay, so let me ask you a question. Is that still a miracle?

Yeah. I guarantee you that man's happier seeing trees walking around than nothing.

And see, we have to realize every step we take in life, every step we move closer to Jesus,

every change we make in life is supernatural. It's a miracle.

The Lord was up here sharing about testimony. You have a testimony.

And you say, well, I'm not really sure I did. Then change this week. You got a testimony.

You know, get rid of an addiction. Stop, you know, whatever it is that God's telling you to stop doing.

There's your testimony. Does that make sense? And it's supernatural.

I mean, the Bible tells us don't remain as children.

Our goal is that we develop the characteristics of Jesus, that we learn to love people and humbly serve others.

But so many Jesus followers, they grow older, but they don't grow up.

They're stuck in spiritual infancy and they want Chris to wipe their butts.

Is that enough of that at home? And it stinks.

And here's the reality. Spiritual growth, it's not automatic.

You know, people are going to get baptized today. It doesn't mean they're going to grow.

Spiritual growth takes intentional commitment. You got to decide you want to grow.

You got to make an effort to grow and you got to persist in it.

You got to stop making excuses. It's not my fault.

It's your relationship. So you got to want to grow, decide to grow and make an effort.

And then every step, if you suddenly view every step that you move closer to Jesus as a supernatural act of God, you'll want to change.

Which leads us to our next step. You got to see the potential for change.

Mark 8 25, then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again and his eyes were opened.

His sight was completely restored and he could see everything clearly.

Jesus, he saw the potential in this man and completely healed him.

And he sees the same potential in me and you.

And he says, I want you, you know what he says? He says, Hey, vineyard.

I want you to go out and share the good news.

I want you to heal the sick, raise the dead.

Can you believe he said that to us?

I'm going to make sure God tells me to raise the dead.

I haven't been told to do that yet, but if God tells me to pray for a dead person, I will.

I haven't been told yet.

Care for those that are forgotten.

Right. Talks about bringing justice to people that are being trampled on.

That's what we're called to do.

And you have that potential in you. Jesus sees it in you.

You know, we're having a conversation with with Robert and Kathy yesterday.

They're like, man, this is amazing.

It's amazing what God has done through you. And, you know, you just what's happening at the at HTV is just incredible.

And people and lives change and baptisms and all this stuff.

Right. Incredible.

You know something? None of it would have ever happened if this guy up in Syracuse,

this little short Italian guy named John Elmer didn't see the potential in just an eye.

None of it.

But he saw the potential in us and he poured into us five years of what he learned and how he grew.

And he shook the religion out of us.

And we were able to become the people God wanted us to be.

And it took him to do that so that all this could happen.

You know what's cool?

You guys get to meet him on Labor Day. He's coming down to preach.

Yeah.

I was like, man, you got to come down here and preach like we're grandchildren for you.

You know, so he's going to come down and share on Labor Day.

You don't want to miss that.

But my point is you need to keep the door open with people, which leads us to our next step.

And it's the final one.

Just see and trust God's power.

Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again.

His eyes were open. His sight completely restored and he could see everything clearly.

Jesus sent him away saying, don't go back into the village on your way home.

See, friends, through a relationship with Jesus, you can grow and change in ways that are impossible to do without him.

That man can now see because of God's power.

And that's why it takes faith to do what God wants you to do.

You can't do it on your own. You're like, Chris, it's too hard. I'm fearful.

It's OK. Just take a step of faith.

See, anything you do in your own strength, chances are you're going to fail.

But God says, just step out of the boat.

See, when you come to Jesus, you acknowledge your weakness and your need for him.

And friends, what you have to realize, he turns our greatest weakness into strengths.

What you thought was your greatest weakness. For some of you, you're like, well, I'm single. I'm weak. I'm no good.

Be single and enjoy it.

And share the good news.

And stop saying you need to be married or you need to have a boyfriend. They're all lies.

Use God's power to stand and do what he's calling you to do.

We stand with me this morning.

You know, it's completely humbling to take what is thought to be a relationship song

and spin it into a story of life change that God wants for us.

And see, some of you are here this morning when I was talking about that, well, when then?

You're like, yep, that's me.

Or there's others here this morning and I was talking about those good intentions that you have and you're like, yep, that's me.

I want to pray for you right now because I believe that God wants to supernaturally overwhelm you with his presence and his power.

So you change. Stop making excuses.

I'm just thankful for each and every person for us.

I'm thankful, God, for a team that can sing a song and bring about your power.

But God, I'm more thankful for life change, God, that you want to radically change lives here this morning.

God, motivate people to turn their intentions into action.

And encourage people to stop making statements and excuses of, well, when this happens then?

Now, there's also those of you here this morning that when I was talking about giving your whole heart to God, you felt that nudge.

I haven't been in church in years. I've walked away from God, turned my back on God. I'm mad at God.

He's saying, just come home.

Come back into that relationship with me. Come into that relationship with me.

So if you could, people, no one looking around. It's a private thing between people and God.

Is there anybody here? This went just by. No one's going to call your name out. I'm not going to make it come forward.

It's a personal thing between you and God. We'll all pray together with you. Is there anybody here that says,

Hey, Chris, I need to give my whole heart to Jesus. And if that's you, just slip your hand up.

Yes. Come Holy Spirit. Yep.

Come Holy Spirit. Yep. Yep. Yep.

Hands all over the place.

You know, we all pray as a family. Let's all pray this prayer together.

Jesus, I'm a broken person in need of you.

Forgive me for my sin, my doubt, my regret, my shame, my past, my garbage.

I give it to you. Make me new.

Fill me with your Holy Spirit and set me free in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Amen.
