Walking for the World

Greetings, everybody. Thank you for joining us for

this episode. My name is John Ewart.

I'm the senior pastor at Inglewood Baptist Church here in

Rocky Mount. And we're so thankful that

you've been listening to this. You know, we've been

broadcasting and these episodes in a way to to try to help you

as you're praying or, you know, we originally started with the

idea that you would be walking, maybe in your neighborhood,

walking the dog, walking with your spouse or friends, And

maybe you're walking around the mall.

Maybe you're driving and you're listening to these, or maybe

you're just sitting in your living room and having your

quiet time and listening through this and using these as prayer

guides. I hope you go back and listen to

all the episodes. We've tried to cover different

areas of prayer. And today we have a special one.

I think we're going to be praying for the world.

We're going to be praying for missions, which is near and dear

to my heart. I have a background in missions

and, and my teaching role at the seminary in the past has been in

that world. So this is something I'm very

excited about. Inglewood has had a history of

missions over the years. It has a foundation of that.

And so that's something we certainly want to build upon,

continue to, to enhance and then to get even more people to

participate. So not only in our trips and our

projects, but just in our, our prayer support and our giving as

well. So it's, it's a big part of the

DNA of our church. So if you're not a part of a

church anywhere else, I hope you'll come and be a part of

what we're doing here. I'm, I'm excited to be joined

today by, by someone you've, you've heard him before.

Charles, thanks for being here. It's great to be here.

Charles served overseas in missions and that was our

missions pastor for many years. Then we're also joined by our

student pastor, Dylan Anderson. Thank you for being here.

Thank you, Pastor John, looking forward to.

It Dylan has also served overseas and leads many of our

mission trips with our students and we're excited about his

input. Let me just give us a brief

introduction as you start driving or walking.

So get those feet going or, or get your prayer, prayer wheels

and moving in your living room there.

You know, one of the things that we, we believe here is that an

essential discipleship at Inglewood is that a disciple of

Jesus would participate in missions.

But they would also do that with a sense of urgency and a sense

of sacrifice that there's a, a passion involved with this.

And what does that mean? You know, missions often gets

confused. Sometimes a lot of stuff gets

kind of defined as missions. There's some different words

that we use. You know, we have the idea of

God's mission with no S on the end, and that's an unchanging,

non debatable thing that God creates.

We don't get to decide God's mission.

He does that. His mission is to bring himself

glory and for us to join him in redeeming the nation's.

This is a biblical a word and will of God kind of issue.

So the church doesn't decide its mission, but the church does

participate in missions in order to help fulfill that mission.

So part of what we do is we have, we have various projects

and prayer, prayer issues and every Sunday we're praying for

unreached people groups as well as trying to get people

involved. So missions is something that we

do to participate in the mission.

And then you have the idea of evangelism.

And what's the difference between missions and evangelism?

I used to get asked that in Class A lot.

You know, I, I, I do it this way.

It's pretty simple. I, I divide things into 3

categories. Yet pre evangelism, evangelism

and post evangelism. And in pre evangelism, you're

building the relationships. You could do social ministry,

pray for people, develop the relationships that you want to,

to build those bridges. Evangelism itself is actually

verbally sharing the gospel. You're talking about a cross,

you're talking about a resurrection, you're talking

about what Jesus did for us. And then post evangelism after

somebody's saved, obviously you have discipleship and follow up

that needs to take place in missions.

All three of those things happen and often the definition of

missions would include some cross cultural element, although

in today's world that's getting a little more vague because with

globalization, you'll have people in your neighborhood from

different cultures speaking different languages.

And so that doesn't necessarily mean you have to go to a

different country to be engaged that way.

Although we often think of international missions as the

the primary part, but we also have North American church

planting as well as our our own local projects and evangelism.

So to kick us off, as you begin your walk and you're you're

looking around at the neighborhood you're walking

through or you're driving and noticing people in other cars or

walking along the sidewalk, or even if you're just sitting in

your den. I want to read a couple passages

for you. And then you can begin their

prayer time. And we'll give you a moment to

do that. A very familiar, well known

passage in missions is called the Great Commission.

When you look in the Gospels, you'll find and in the book of

Acts, you'll find versions of this Matthew 28 is the most

common. So let me read that verse 18.

And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven on earth

has been given to them, are given to me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them

to the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I've commanded you.

And behold, I'm with you always to the end of the age.

I always like to point out that the only way that the going and

the discipling and the teaching and the baptizing and all that

stuff in the middle, the only way that works is because Jesus

has all authority. So we depend upon his power, and

then he also promises that he'll always be with us.

So we depend upon his presence. So his power and presence make

all of our missions possible. And then you have the verse in

Acts 18, which is also very familiar, says, but you will

receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and

you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and, and in all Judea

and Samaria into the end of the earth.

And so we see this progression of command to, to go out into

the whole world, starting locally, working through the

region. Samaria would also represent

people who aren't like you and ending up in the end of the

earth. So, so even as you begin your

prayer time right now, think about a world of, of lostness,

think about the world of need and think about your own

participation. Begin to pray, to ask God to, to

show you his presence and to show you his power.

And we'll give you a moment to begin praying, and then we'll

come back. The.

The. The.

The. The.

Now, as we move forward, I want us to pray, first of all, for

those who are already participating in missions.

Charles and Dylan both have experience, as do I, living

overseas. And so I'ma let Pastor Charles

kick us off here. But Charles, talk to us a little

bit about how we could pray for those who are already

participating in missions. Yes, that's a great place to

start. We can use Acts 1/8 as a as a

guide. Jesus said you will be my

witnesses. And then he says in Jerusalem

and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

So I like to make it personal. I like to say, what is my

Jerusalem? What is your Jerusalem?

So as you're praying right now, what is your Jerusalem and

praying for those who are already participating in

missions in your communities, in your context, in your area,

where you live? Hopefully it's you.

Hopefully you are that Jesus said you will be.

So for us as believers, we are impacting our community.

We are sharing the gospel. We are engaging others right

there, right here where we live. And then we think about the

local church and hopefully your local church.

I know Inglewood, we say about Inglewood.

We are a church serving the Rocky Mount, Nashville, Red Oak

and surrounding areas. We desire to make an impact

right here where we are. When I talk to people many times

I tell people this is our community, this is where we

live. This is where we as God's people

at Inglewood Baptist Church live and play and work.

And so we want to make a difference and we have

ministries that we can participate in and do it with

urgency and sacrifice to make a difference right where we live.

So as you're praying, pray for your church and your local

church and the local churches around us that we are engaging.

There are many local churches in the Rocky Mountains, surrounding

areas that are engaging and making a difference and on

mission with God. And then I'm thankful for the

Christian organizations that we get to partner with.

I think about your choice Resource Center is 1 making the

difference, touching lives, sharing the gospel with those

who come to them and those they get to to witness to and

participate in ministry with. And then I think about a

Christian adoption services. That's a ministry that we

partner with and they're making a difference with families who

want to adopt and make a difference and want to make a

Christian impact in families. And then I think about the

chaplains, the Christian chaplains that work in hospitals

and I think about the the principles and the head masters

that we have right here in Inglewood and different local

churches who know Jesus Christ and are making a difference

right where they are. So what I like to do is call

people by name and call schools by name that I know that there's

Christian witnesses and, and pray for the churches.

We need to be praying for one another as we're making the

impact because we're here for the mission of God.

And then Judea, your Judea and my Judea, I think is our

surrounding areas outside of where we live.

It could be our state, North Carolina.

I think it also can be our country.

It's right where we live. And I'm so thankful that we

partner with North Carolina Baptist, the North Carolina

Baptist Convention. And they have so many

ministries. I think about one Baptist on

Mission, Pastor John and Pastor Dylan that work with people who

are going through troubled times, going through that have

experienced disasters, natural disasters and other kind of

disasters. And we get to minister and share

the gospel and, and show acts of love and kindness with the power

of Jesus Christ. I think about the aging adult

ministry that our North Carolina Baptist participate in.

And so I'm very thankful. And I think about our Bible

colleges and our seminaries in North Carolina and, and beyond

and pray for them by name. Remember them.

Remember that that God is actively working today in our

world, in our country, in our community.

And so then we think about, as Pastor John mentioned, Samaria,

your Samaria, that's the ones that tend to be overlooked and

neglected. Maybe the homeless in our area,

it could be the orphans or the widows or the widowers.

See, it could be those that we just maybe they have addictions

and we tend to turn our back, society turns their back on them

or those with special needs and special abilities.

And so we as a local church and there are ministries.

I think about the North American Mission Board and I think about

again, Samaritan's Purse and different ministries, Christian

organizations that minister and to the homeless.

But how about us? How about we need to be thinking

about and know that there are local churches today like

Inglewood and others that are ministering to those that we

would consider Samaria. And so let's just pray, continue

to pray for those and call them by name as you're walking, as

you're sitting in your prayer time, maybe look up the North

American Mission Board, maybe look up your church website and

just be looking at the different ministries to these ones that

tend to be overlooked. And then your ends of the earth.

There are people beyond your immediate sphere and to the

outermost parts of the earth. I never forget, Pastor John,

that we as a local church are commanded to do all of this.

We, we don't just do our Jerusalem, we do not just

minister to all of Judea. We do not just minister to

Samaria, but to the outermost parts of the earth.

God has called us. And there are always, I think

about the IMB International Mission Board and I think about

a North American mission board right here and N International

Mission Board overseas and there's many, many other

agencies. I think about Transworld Radio

and I think about how they are sending the gospel by the

airwaves on radio and to places that are hard to reach and how

God's using them. And I think about Wythcliffe

Bible Translators, how God is using them in the world today.

And so thank God that God is at work and he is using US and he's

using believers around the world to touch.

So let's just take time as you're praying to remember it.

God is at work. And I was thinking about some

scriptures other than the ones Pastor John just mentioned, but

especially like Mark 1615. And Jesus said to his disciples,

go to all the world and proclaim the gospel.

Proclaim the gospel, whatever else we may do to proclaim the

gospel to the whole creation. And then Jesus said in John 2021

to them again, peace be with you as the Father has sent me, Even

so I am sending you. Here at Inglewood.

We remind each other that we are sent, We are the sent ones to

our Jerusalem, to all Judea, our Judea, Samaria, into the

outermost parts of the earth. Pastor John.

Yeah, thank you, Charles. You know, I was just thinking as

I was sitting here, I actually just got a WhatsApp from a good

friend of mine who's the leader of the National Mission Board of

Brazil and talking about how they're, they're trying to reach

out to over 5000 churches. And he also had a video of that

he sent me where they were ministering to one of the, I

believe it's 3000 islands at the mouth of the Amazon before it

flows into the ocean. And, and, and just the the the

need that's out in the world that we can see locally.

One of the things that I would just encourage you, which is

what you were saying is that don't just pray for all the

missionaries in the world. Don't just pray for all the lost

people in the world begin to identify individuals or

individual ministries. And there are thousands of

missions in entities out there, frankly, but the zero in on

those that your church is working with and that that your

church is really trying to partner with and begin to pray

for them. So don't just don't just listen

to announcements about them or don't just hear that we're going

to do something with somebody, actually lift them up in prayer

and lift up the missionaries. We have a global prayer hallway

here where we have missionaries that have been sent out from the

church. And so we have specific names of

people that you can pray for. So the more specific you are in

prayer life, the more fresh it is, the more proactive it is,

and the more the more you'll actually see fruit and results.

So I'm going to stop for a minute, let you take just a few

minutes to begin asking God to show you some of these specific

people or ministries and to take a few moments and begin lifting

them up an intercession. The.

The. The.

The. The.

Well, we've been praying for those who are already

participating in missions, but what about those who should

participate in missions, Right. And so one of the things we want

to do is spend a few minutes thinking about some ways we

could participate in missions and, and Our Calling to

missions. And so Pastor Dylan, help us

with this. You've LED a lot of people on

short term mission trips. You've also been part of

missions Agency. So talk to us a little bit about

how we should be involved in missions.

Yeah, Thank you. Pastor John, in the very

beginning, you were mentioning that participating in missions

is one of the essentials of discipleship here at Inglewood.

And if we're saying that participating in missions is an

essential of discipleship, that means we're expecting everyone

to be participating in missions in some way.

And 2nd Corinthians chapter 5, verses 17 through 21, Paul tells

us that we have been given the ministry of reconciliation.

God is reconciling the world to himself through Christ, and he's

given that ministry to us to join a part of his mission of

reconciling the world to himself.

And so the first thing that we can do is we can pray.

Everyone of us should be praying for missions.

And just like Pastor Charles said, we should be praying for

those who are already laboring in missions, thinking about our

missionaries, our local partners, our international

partners by name and, and working through those and

praying for those on a regular basis.

But also, as Matthew 938 says, we should be praying that the

Lord of the harvest would send out more laborers into the

harvest that God would begin to send out and call out more

missionaries to go and be a part of what he's doing in the world.

And then we also need to be praying for the lost by name.

We need to be thinking about the lost people in our community,

the people that we know in our as, as Charles said, our

Jerusalem, our Judea, those people that are close by us.

But then we also need to be thinking about those people on

the other side of the world. Here in a little while, we'll

talk about unreached, unengaged people groups.

We need to be calling out those those people, those places by

name and asking that the Lord would bring salvation to them.

But prayer is not where things stop.

We also are called to give, and so I would encourage you to be

giving to your local church. In Acts chapter 4, we see what

Acts 4 · chapter mention

when the local churches is selling their possessions and

they're pulling all their resources together and they're

bringing them and laying them to the feet of the apostles to be

distributed out to the different ministries that God has called

the church to. And so we here at Inglewood, we

support all kinds of organizations here locally and

internationally. We support missionaries that we

have sent out from Englewood Baptist Church.

And so we pray very diligently and seek the Lord on the places

that we would send the money that's been entrusted to us as a

congregation on how that is used.

I mean, and it allows us to be able to do things like mission

scholarships to help people go on short term mission trips here

through our local church. And so giving to our local

church is one of the best ways that we can support missions and

what God is doing in the world. But then also many of us will be

going and so there are many different ways and avenues to be

able to go. You can go on a short term trip

or a a midterm trip or even long term.

And so that we've got many short term trip opportunities that are

going to be coming up. We've got some local

opportunities with our church plant over in Tarboro with First

Love and with Jonathan and Brittany Taylor and their

family. But then later this year we're

going to have a missions month where we're going to be talking

about all of the short term missions opportunities over the

next year here at Inglewood where you can go either

somewhere locally in in North America or somewhere

internationally and serve the Lord for a short period of time.

But I'm even excited that we've got midterm opportunities as

well, where like some of our college students even next

summer are going to be going overseas and spending the summer

overseas with some of our missionaries.

And so there's all kinds of creative ways and avenues and

opportunities for you to be able to go and to be involved in

missions. And any of us would love to be

able to have a conversation with you about what those things look

like. And so the bottom line is every

one of us are called to participate in missions.

So how is it that God is calling you and your family to

participate in missions? And what if God might be calling

you to go long term yourself? It's a possibility that the Lord

might be calling you to pick up, sell everything that you have

and go somewhere else and serve the Lord in a vocational

capacity for missions. Man, one of my favorite quotes

of all time about just allowing the Lord to have full control

over our life is from Corey Tinbum.

Corey Tinbum, she said it this way.

She said hold everything in your hands lightly, otherwise it

hurts when God has the pry your fingers open.

And so God's got a plan for your life already.

And we need to hold our plans loosely and just tell the Lord

Lord, we are here and we're ready to do whatever it is that

you call us to do. Danny Aiken, the president of

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, who's preached at our

church here many times, this this quote does not originate

with him, but he says it all the time.

Don't ask why I should go. Instead, ask why should I stay?

And So what if the Lord might be calling you and your family to

go serve Him in some capacity on the other side of the world?

And so be praying and be open to the fact that God may be calling

you to vocational missions. And so if you're wrestling with

that man, your pastors would love to talk to you.

We'd love to be able to have a conversation with you about

walking through what that looks like.

And one of the best first steps is just to be able to go on a

short term trip. And so I'm really excited about

our missions month later this year where we'll be announcing

some of those short term trips where the Lord might use one of

those opportunities to be able to call you to go on the mission

field vocationally. Pastor John.

Yeah, thank you, Dionne. You know, it's really good to,

to think about. I, I almost dare you to pray

that way. You know, as you're, as you're

sitting in your prayer time right now, walking or driving,

I, I dare you to, to ask God those questions.

You know, why? Why am I not participating?

What prevents me from participating?

How could I best participate? Why is God not calling me to

missions instead of, instead of all the excuses for not going or

not participating? I want you to think about what's

holding you back. And, and I want you to take a

few moments just to pray about that as well as those that that,

you know, in the church. Maybe maybe you're listening to

this and you're one of those folks.

You're, you're going all the time.

You know, you're, you're part of the teams, you're, you're very

involved. And so we're so thankful for

you. But but think about the others.

We want to see a much higher percentage of our own

congregation participating. And then I would love to see

that happening in other church life too.

So pray about that for a few minutes.

The. The.

The. The.

One of the other areas we want to pray for is, is for lack of a

better way to put it, I want, I want to pray for the fruit of

missions. In other words, part of what we

want to pray for is that this will be effective.

You know, it's not just a matter of going on trips.

It's not just a matter of living overseas.

It's not just a matter of, of planning a church.

We actually want to see something happen at the end of

those things. We, we want to see spiritual and

Kingdom fruit being born. This whole time it's just been

providential. I've, I've been dialoguing on

WhatsApp as I've been recording this podcast with my friend in

Brazil. He was just sharing with me that

they're going to have a project down there in a, in a single

day. They're hoping to see 1,000,000

people saved on one day with thousands of churches working

together hitting the street. And so you think about that kind

of fruit and, and what we would expect.

And sometimes it's hard. You know, when you think about

international missions especially, it's hard to wrap

your head around billions of lost people.

You know, you hear these things. There are billions of lost

people. There are thousands of unreached

people groups. And sometimes it's hard to wrap

your head around that math. It's just kind of overwhelming.

Or you hear the name of an unreached people group.

You don't know them. It's hard for that to be

personal. It's hard for that to really

touch your heart sometimes. And sometimes it's just so big,

so nebulous too, that it's just kind of hard to wrap it around

there. So you got to break this down.

We got to break this down like eating the elephant.

You got to do this one bite at a time and you got to really begin

to focus on those specifics and to think about how in the in

this place or with this missionary, what they're doing,

what their next project is. And so it's helpful to expose

yourself to resources that would actually help you to do that,

like the Joshua project and other places you can go online.

There are apps where you'll get AI get a feed every morning for,

you know, a new unreached people group.

And of course, here at Inglewood, every Sunday morning

we're pointing out an unreached people group or we're featuring

one of our missionaries or we're reporting on one of our trips so

that we can personalize this and give you something specific to

kind of wrap your head around and pray about.

But here just a couple of categories to think about in

prayer. And then I thought, you know,

you guys jump in, but you know that I want you to think about.

Let me break it down to those 3 categories again.

Let's think about some of the pre evangelistic opportunities

to where we want to build the relationships we're building the

bridges we're trying to open the doors to, to the gospel So that

so we we might be involved in in some kind of social ministry

where we're doing something, you know, it could even be

construction. You know, we may be helping to

build something or to paint something or to prayer walk

something or, or it might be medical or it might be

educational, might be sports related to where you're doing an

activity to in order to build the bridge in order to establish

the relationship cross culturally.

That can be really important because in a lot of cultures

they're not going to receive an intimate conversation about

spirituality necessarily immediately.

They're they're going to want to know you a little bit 1st.

And so to be able to think through some of those pre

evangelistic moments and how to develop those.

And so some of our trips will even feature some of that to

where we're doing things to help the missionary on the field.

We're doing some things up front, providing the labor force

to do that in order to, to help them.

I mean, over the years I've taken guys on trips and they've

probably not shared the gospel much in their life.

And we talk about that before we go and our preparation.

But, but some of them are going to do construction.

Some of them are going because they have expertise and, and,

and engineering, you know, on how to, how to put up a, a

building of some kind or, or their coaches or all kinds of

backgrounds. And so guys, you got any

comments on any? This is pre evangelism.

Think about that for a minute. I was thinking, Pastor John, I'm

have to kind of go back to my South Africa days when I was

there overseas. And one of the things we did in

one of the villages and in the community and Inglewood helped

us with this, this Christian organization that was working

from their church actually wanted to have a little

Community Center. And so we came and helped them

with the construction of that. But then we for a few years

after that, we would come and help work that and have

opportunity to meet the people and people saw that we cared for

their, you know, for, for their village that we participated in

helping kind of raise the level of living a little bit.

And they saw that we cared. And but we have the local church

there in that area. And so God gave them

opportunities to share the gospel later and many people

came to Christ and churches were planted in those several of

those villages surrounding that. But that helping build that

Community Center was a was a open door for us to be able to

say, Hey, we care for you. Yeah, in Ecuador, where my wife

and I served, we did some very similar things, medical clinics

and those kinds of things just to show communities that we

care. But also for us individually.

We've talked about some ways that our that our church has put

trips together and those kinds of things to help build, to help

missionaries build bridges in different places.

But what about you and your personal life?

What are those bridges that you're building right now with

the people around you? I mean, just think about the

things that you enjoyed doing. High school football is one of

my favorite things. And so on Friday nights I get to

go hang out with a local high school football team and it

allows me to be able to build relationships with those young

men to try to get the opportunity to be able to tell

them about Jesus. But I know many people here

locally that play pickleball and other kinds of things that give

them the opportunities to be able to just to get to meet lost

people to do that work of pre evangelism, praying that the

Lord would give them an opportunity to be able to tell

somebody about Jesus. Yeah, in a previous episode, we

were talking about how to pray for lost people.

And I mentioned Colossians chapter 4, which is a a prayer

Colossians 4 · chapter mention

that Paul asked the church to pray for him while he was in

prison. And, and basically he's asking

them that they would pray that the window or the door of the

opening to the gospel would take place.

And so these opportunities are things to pray for.

And so whether it's an international context or a local

context for us to pray for these pre evangelistic activities that

many of our missionaries have to engage in, especially in some,

you got to think of some of our closed cultures and some of our

security situations to where you're not going to stand out on

the street and just proclaim the gospel easily in some countries,

in some cultures. And so they're going to be

working through all kinds of various platforms and means.

The key to that though, for pre evangelism is that you get to

the why. Here's why I'm doing this,

here's why we're doing this so that then you can begin to pray

for the evangelism itself. You're praying for people to be

saved and opportunities to actually share the gospel and

for people to be saved. So you want to pray for that as

well. So it's a very holistic idea.

You want to pray for each step along the way.

And then and then you you also need to pray just as diligently,

especially in missions for the post event.

This isn't just about evangelism.

It's also about discipleship. And so how do I, how do I

develop young believers? How do I develop a new church?

How do I develop people who are going to in a sense, take over

from me so that I don't need to be here as a missionary anymore.

They're they're able to lead themselves and I can go

someplace where there isn't anybody.

And so in the sense, how do I also pray for these post

evangelistic opportunities to disciple and develop in a way

that they'll continue to repeat the cycle?

And so it's not just a pre, it's not just the actual evangelistic

act that we've prayed for before in a different episode, but we

also want to think about what happens after that and how do I

continue the task and finish the task through leadership

development and exit. You guys got any comments about

that one? Yeah, I mean, Second Timothy 22

is one of those verses that just comes right to mind, those

things that you have heard from me in the presence of many

witnesses and trust of faithful men who will be able to teach

others. Also.

It's our job not just to make converts, but to make disciples,

multiplying disciples. And so it's our job not just to

see somebody come to faith in Jesus and see the Lord bring

them to salvation and see them baptized into the local church,

but it's our job to continue to invest in them.

And as the Great Commission says that Pastor John is already read

to teach them all of the things that Jesus has commanded us.

And so to walk alongside them as the church and help them grow in

their walk with Jesus, so that then they can go and turn around

and do the exact same thing. Yeah, so just don't be

overwhelmed by the vastness of it all.

I mean, 'cause you know, the idea of praying for missions can

be a huge idea. So.

So try to 0 in, as Charles and Dillon both said, too, try to 0

in on some specifics so that as you're praying, you can begin to

pray for people, places, activities that are near and

dear to your heart. And you can do that with a sense

of urgency and a sense of passion.

So take a few moments, ask God to show those to you, and we'll

be back in just a bit. You keep walking, you keep

praying and lifting up God's mission as we participate with

them through missions. The.

The. The.

and listen to all the others. These do tie together.

Especially go back and listen to our episode on praying for the

lost people. I think it would dovetail with

this really well. And, and also when you think

about discipleship, one of the things I really do want to do is
