morning. How are you guys today? Good. Listen,

Tracy, you were handpicked to do announcements.

Welcome. If this is your first time here, man,

you're in for a treat. I don't know why, but

you are. Not because of me, but because of God's

Word. If you're joining us online, thank you.

Whether you're at home or on a transatlantic

flight to the Middle East, I don't know. Thank

you for joining us. The Holy Spirit's going to

be here again today. I can hear him buzzing.

I can hear him buzzing in the background. Hear

that? It's always awesome when I get to lead

the message after acoustic worship because there's

something intimate about just sitting, not quietly,

but... solemnly in the presence of God. So, guys,

I'm going to jump right in, okay? And I'm going

to take you kind of a little into the behind

the scenes of what happens here at the church.

See, every year around November, December, we

sit down and we write these message series. We

plan out the entire year, okay? We map out every

single month, every single series. There he is,

you hear him? Most of the time when we do that

in November, December, we come up with a great

series title. Like Under Armour was our series

about the armor of God, right? Or Stretch Thin,

which was about a whole series about mental health

issues that run rampant in our society. We did

inked, where we debunked some Old Testament misunderstandings.

Some of the time, we know the topic, but we don't

have a title. Like the month before, last, we

did Holy Spirit, right? We knew we wanted to

talk about the Holy Spirit, but we didn't have

a title. Then, when we were designing the poster,

someone mentioned, hey, we say, come Holy Spirit,

literally every time we meet. There's our title.

It was a no -brainer to call that series Come

Holy Spirit. And in other times, we have a placeholder

title. We know the topic. We have a good idea

what we will be talking about. We have an idea

what the title will be. But we are open to allowing

the Holy Spirit to speak to us and guide us and

often redirect us. This series that we are in

is called Pastor's Picks. It's one of those instances.

The working title that we put in for this series

was called Handpicked. Let me pause for a second

because every year in August we have a series

similar to this because Chris goes out of town.

Now, we're in the third week of the month, the

third consecutive support pastor. It's bringing

the message. Some of you have been coming for

the past two weeks and still haven't met Chris

Slaughterbeck, who is our lead pastor. Why? Hopefully

you figured out Chris is on vacation. Now, you

only have one more week. You get to deal with

me today. Chris will be back next week, I promise.

I'm not sure if you were clapping for me or for

Chris coming back. To be the lead pastor of this

size church or of any church is a largely stressful

job. Couple that with the fact that God has told

us multiple times in the Old Testament, in fact,

commanded us to rest. Further driven home by

God himself, modeling rest on the seventh day.

And Jesus modeling rest time and time again in

the New Testament. So Chris. And as importantly,

all of you, all of us, don't just deserve a time

of rest. God expects us to take time to rest

in him. But understand, Stephen, Rhett, and I,

we aren't just fill -ins for an absent pastor.

Stephen was hand -picked by God to teach us how

to read the Bible. Rhett was handpicked by God

to help us dive deeper into an understanding

of what it means to worship. When we changed

the name of the series to Pastor's Picks, and

we decided that each of the three of us would

get to choose the topic for our week, the word

handpicked just wouldn't escape my head. I prayed,

and God said, Rudy, handpicked is the message

I want you to speak. So today, I'm going to bring

a message titled, Handpicked by God. God's going

to bring this message, so without further ado,

let's invite him into this space. Come Holy Spirit.

God, we know that you are in this space all week

preparing for this morning. God, we know that

you handpicked each and every person to sit in

every single seat that they are sitting in this

morning, God. God, I ask that you just speak

through me. Allow your word to penetrate the

hearts of every person in the seats and every

person online. God, we thank you for the rest

that you have allowed our lead pastor to take,

bringing him back next week just to speak a powerful

message to us next week. But for today, God,

just allow us to lean into your presence. In

Jesus' name, amen. All right. So, today I want

to open the message by looking at Peter's opening

salutation in his first letter. Oftentimes what

we do is we read a book of the Bible. When we

open that book, we look at the first chapter

and we skip through a lot of it. Right? We skip

through Matthew because we don't care who begot

who, who begot who. We skip through the introduction

because we just want to get to the good stuff.

But today, I'm going to challenge you that the

good stuff is in the first part of 1 Peter. So

in the introductory paragraph of his first letter,

1 Peter, it goes like this. And I'm going to

read all of it, so just hang tight. Peter, an

apostle of Jesus Christ, to God select. Exiles

scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus,

Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. I had

to look up how to pronounce some of those names.

Those who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge

of God the Father through the sanctifying work

of the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ

and sprinkled with his blood. Praise be to God

and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his mercy,

he has given us new birth into a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from

the dead and into an inheritance that can never

perish, never spoil, never fade. This inheritance

is kept in heaven for you. You who by faith are

shielded by God's power until the coming salvation

that is ready to be revealed, to be revealed,

to be revealed in the last time. In all of this,

you greatly rejoice. Now, though now for a little

while you may have had to suffer grief in all

kinds of trials, these have come so that the

proven genuineness of your faith, of greater

worth than gold, which perishes even though refined

by fire, may result in praise, glory, and honor

when Jesus Christ is revealed. That you have

not seen him, you love him. And even though you

do not see him now, You believe in him and are

filled in an expressible and glorious joy, for

you are receiving the end result of your faith,

the salvation of your souls. So say the Lord,

or however they end it. So I'm going to jump

right into point one, but before Aidan puts the

point on the Sky Bible, I know how many of you

are. Some of you just sit there and don't even

look at the outline and whatever, you just listen

to the pastor. Others of you, if you're like

me, sit at the ready with your pens, ready to

fill in those blanks with maybe a tinge of anxiety

that you're going to miss a blank. Please put

your pens down and don't fill in the blank until

I tell you. Okay? Are you ready to not write

anything? Point one. Please know this. Jesus.

calls you. Didn't write, don't write anything

yet. I want you to make this personal. I don't

want you to write the word you. Write the word

me. These are your notes. Jesus calls me. Now

you may write. Back to 1 Peter 1. Peter, an apostle

of Jesus Christ, to God's elect. Exiles scattered

throughout the providence of those five things.

Who have been chosen, chosen according to the

foreknowledge of God the Father through the sanctifying

work of the Spirit to be obedient to the blood

of Christ. I'm going to jump back to that word

scattered. The word scattered comes from the

Greek word diaspora. I looked that one up too

and I probably butchered it. Diaspora. That word

means to sow throughout. Like a farmer that intentionally

spreads his seeds. The figurative meaning of

the word diaspora is to distribute in foreign

lands. Folks, we are scattered with a purpose.

A farmer doesn't just Throw out the seed. He

places them purposefully. You have a purpose.

And we are all put in different places, in different

situations for a godly purpose. And in the phrase,

who have been chosen? That word chosen comes

from the Greek word eklego or a different form,

eklegomai. Butchered that one too. That word

eclego means to select. Folks, you are a child

of God. You are selected by God. You are handpicked

by God. You are adopted into his family through

the resurrecting power of our Lord and Christ

Jesus. You are called. Which leads us to point

two. You don't have to wait for me. You are his

partner. and his partner. Now, this may sound

familiar. If any of you are here the last time

I spoke, the last message I did was called Partnering

with the Holy Spirit. So this message is kind

of a sequel to my last message. Go back to YouTube

and listen to it. During that message, I called

myself a knucklehead. In fact, I have a history

of self -deprecation. And my message is, it's

because I want you to know that I'm no different

than anyone else in here. After that message,

no less than three of you approached me, called

me out. So this part of the message is for you,

Michaela, for you, Dodie, and for you, Jim Cannon.

You're right. I am not a knucklehead. Although,

if you hang out with me for about a week, or

if you talk to Carrie, I truly know that my identity

is not knucklehead. My identity is in Jesus.

In fact, when I speak to people about their identity,

to youth, to young adults, to old adults, especially

Christians, I remind them that their identity

is in Jesus. Jesus. Your identity isn't your

job. Your identity isn't boyfriend or girlfriend,

husband or wife. It's not mom or dad. Your identity

isn't softball player. It's not guitar player.

Your identity doesn't lie in your sexual identity

or in your gender. All of those things are part

of who you are. But your identity is son of God.

Daughter of God. Child of God. Jump back into

1 Peter 1, this time in verse 3. Praise be to

the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In his great mercy, he has given us new birth

into a living hope through the resurrection of

Jesus Christ from the dead. And into an inheritance

that can never perish, spoil, or fade. This inheritance

is kept in heaven for you who by faith are shielded

in God's power until the coming of salvation

that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

When you partner with the Holy Spirit, you do

great things. Say it, I do great things. See,

I often think, self -deprecation again, I often

think. That when I partner with the Holy Spirit,

the Holy Spirit is getting a short end of the

stick. It's him in all his great power partnering

with little old useless me. But that's not the

truth. He uses me. He uses my experience. He

uses the knowledge that he has given me. All

of me, the best person for the job. Stephen's

teaching message came from what Stephen knows

and teaches our youth. The Holy Spirit doesn't

get the short end of the stick. He gets a son

of God in Stephen who actually uses his skill

set to teach the youth something. And then he

turned around and taught us how to read, break

down, and understand Scripture. God whispered

that pick to Stephen because Stephen was the

best person for the job. Rhett's message came

from everything Rhett has experienced in his

life, in music and outside of music. The Holy

Spirit doesn't get shortchanged. He worked through

Rhett, using Rhett's calling through music to

teach about worship. God prompted Rhett to pick

worship. Because Rhett was the best person for

the job. The last time I spoke, I told this story

about how God called me to pray for this random

man at the city park. When God called me to pray

with that random man at the city park, he was

just calling me into a conversation. A conversation

that was easy. Because I only had to talk about

things that I know. That guy that I talked to

was a musician. I am a drummer. Or identified

as one in my past. That man's son actually went

to the school that I taught at. We were able

to quickly fall into conversation based on what

we both knew. See, guys, when God calls you,

please know. That you already know what to do

when he calls you. You already have the tools

for it ready to go. And if you don't, he's going

to fill out and fill in everything you need.

As long as you take the step. And folks, the

Holy Spirit does not get the short end of the

stick. He gets a strong, mighty Son of God. Built

by God. Wearing the honor of God. Remember, you

might want to write this one down. We are the

hands of feet. Not yet. The calling isn't about

being a pastor or a math teacher or a restaurant

manager. It's about showing people the love of

Jesus. Here it is. The calling isn't the skill

set. The calling is using the skill set for the

kingdom. The calling isn't the fact that you

have a skill set even though you do. The calling

is, I'm going to use my skill set, me, Rudy,

all of me, to further the kingdom of God. 2 Thessalonians

3, but the Lord is faithful. He will establish

you and guard you against the evil one. And we

have confidence in the Lord about you, about

what you are doing, what you are doing. and about

what you will do. Those things are the things

that they commanded. May the Lord direct your

hearts to the love of God and the steadfastness

of Christ. Let me repeat what I said a moment

ago. When you partner with the Holy Spirit, you

do great things. So right now, I denounce that

I am a knucklehead. Will you do the same? What

negative word or association do you put on yourself?

What identity do you hang on to that is not of

God? So, we're going to do this together. If

you have a word or a picture, an identity that

is not of God, you're going to repeat after me.

I denounce right now that I am a blank. Ready?

Say it with me. Fill in your blank. Ready? I

denounce right now that I am a knucklehead. Now,

you're going to say this, depending on your gender,

which is only part of your identity. I am a son

of God or I am a daughter of God. Ready? I am

a son of God. Feel better? Now, whatever you

just prayed and denounced, don't let it back

in. Point three, he wants all of you. He wants

all of me. Now, I have a couple cool little photos

up here. So, Aidan, will you put the first photo

up here? If I gave you this rock as a gift, what

would you do with it? I might take the rock and

skip it across. It looks like a pretty good skipping

rock, right? I'd probably take it and skip it

across the pond. Thanks, Rudy, for a great skipping

rock. Let's look at this second rock. What about

this one? If I handed this rock to you, what

would you do with it? Paperweight? Cherish it.

Thank you, Lance. I love you. Name it. Pet rock.

Let's look at the last rock. What might you do

with this rock? Ah, there's gold in this one.

I'm keeping this one. Aidan, put all three images

up there. What if I told you that all three of

these rocks had gold in them? One, two, and three,

guess what? They all have gold in them. What

if I told you rock one had gold? You're diving

in that pond and searching for the gold rock.

Right? You're taking that paperweight and melting

out the gold. Can I suggest that each and every

person here has a golden treasure inside of you?

Some of us have gold that shines through more

than others, but all of us have it. Will you

receive it? When you take these rocks out of

the mine, when you take them out of the riverbed,

you have to take the whole rock to get the treasure

inside. God wants the whole rock. He wants all

of you. The dirty parts of the rock and the shiny

parts of the rock. Just know the more you live

with Jesus and your heart and the Holy Spirit

guiding you, the more your golden treasure shines

through. But also, oftentimes, it's the dirty

parts that people are going to relate to. It's

the raw, pure dirt that attracts people to you,

especially when you have the gold shining through.

1 Peter 1 .9, for you're receiving the end result

of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Give

them all of your faith, he will give you all

of himself. That inheritance includes your salvation.

Romans 8, 17, and if children, then heirs. If

you're a child of God, then you are heir of God

and fellow heirs with Jesus, provided we suffer

with him in order that we may also be glorified

with him. You are a child of God. That inheritance

is yours, but you have to surrender and submit,

give up, and give in to God. Do that and you'll

be glorified. Let me tell you a fun story about

Kingston. And some of you as parents might have

a similar story. When Kingston was little, we

would take him to get ice cream and he never

wanted to eat ice cream. We had to force him

to try ice cream. Anyone have a kid like that?

We had to force him to try ice cream. Now, when

he finally started getting ice cream, he would

get Superman ice cream. If you don't know what

Superman ice cream is, it looks like crazy vanilla.

But every different color is a different, nasty,

horrible flavor. But he absolutely loved Superman

ice cream. I love cotton candy because I'm a

child. Well, I won't identify with that. I love

chocolate marshmallow. So I'm like, Kingston,

man, you got to try this chocolate marshmallow.

Kid, it is so good. No, I don't want chocolate

marshmallow. It's brown, ugly. I want pretty

Superman ice cream with all the colors. I'm telling

you, kid. I'm telling you, dude. I'm telling

you, little man. Try the chocolate marshmallow.

You're going to love it. Not going to do it.

Until that day he gave in. Gave up the Superman

and tried the chocolate marshmallow. And now

he loved it. One of his go -to flavors is chocolate

marshmallow. And me. Being the kind, loving,

gentle father I am, said, see? I told you so.

If you listen to your father, I know what's best.

How many of you are still eating Superman ice

cream? Listen, if you listen to the father, he

knows what's best. Some of you don't want to

give it up. Give it up, man. And give in to the

God, your Father, your Savior, Jesus, your Father,

the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, the Father, whatever.

If you lean into him, you'll be glorified in

him. That got me all worked up. I've got to take

a drink. Now, if you read my email this past

Thursday, you saw that this conversation grew,

or this message grew out of a conversation that

Carrie and I had a few months back. We were contemplating

what it means to be a child of God. And we couldn't

articulate it. We couldn't, like, I knew in my

heart what it meant, but I couldn't articulate

it. I'll tell you, it's okay to not know all

of the things. It's okay not to have a definition

for every word. It's okay to not have an answer

to every time someone asks you a Bible question.

But once the question is posed, you got to find

the answers. Look at Peter, the man who wrote

this book. Long before he wrote the letter 1

Peter, he didn't truly understand Jesus' calling.

Jesus even looks at him and says, get behind

me, Satan. Ouch. But I firmly believe that Peter

grew in his time with Jesus. And he continued

to grow in his spirit after Jesus left. So that

by the time he wrote this letter, he knew exactly

what it meant to be a child of God. And exactly

what it meant to walk out God's calling. The

only way you will know what it means to be a

child of God is to spend time with Jesus and

be guided by the Holy Spirit. I challenged you

in that email to read these scriptures. The one

that I started at the top is one of those scriptures.

Read it. We're going to use that scripture again

right now to hear what Peter has to say, what

it means to be a child of God. So let's look

at our action steps. What does it mean to be

a child of God? First, you have to align yourself

with Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God. He is the

example. Aligning yourself with Jesus gives you

all the power of the Holy Spirit. Being a child

of God means that you get to use all the tools

the Holy Spirit has given you, just like I talked

about in the park. Tools to relate to people,

to see people, to lift people up, to help people

heal. All the power. 1 Peter again, this time

in chapter 2. You who have been chosen according

to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through

the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient

to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood.

Being sprinkled with his blood means to be free

of bondage and sin. To align yourself with Jesus

also means to hate sin, be an enemy of sin. It's

not about your sin. It's about my sin. Don't

hate that guy's sin. Hate my sin. Take the focus

off the sin of everyone else and focus on my

sin. Remember the plank in my own eye? It doesn't

mean we can't lift up and encourage our brothers

and sisters. Understand your sin. Do an inventory

of your sin. Keep doing an inventory. Then atone

for those sins and align yourself with the truth,

with the Bible, with the Word, with the Holy

Spirit, with Jesus. Being a child of God means

walking out His will for me. Me. 1 Peter, this

time, 1 and verse 6. In all this you greatly

rejoice, though now for a little while you may

have had to suffer grief and all kinds of trials.

These trials have come so that to prove ingenuous

of your faith, the greater worth of gold which

perishes, even if refined by fire, may result

in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ

is revealed. Romans 12, 17, that other scripture

in the email that I gave you, it says it this

way. If indeed we share in his sufferings, in

order that we may also share in his glory. We

share in his sufferings, share in his glory.

I used to read this to mean that as a Christian

we would endure suffering. That old school Christian

mentality that almost causes us to look for suffering.

Right? To manufacture suffering. To work out

suffering. I took it to mean we would be mocked.

We would be chastised to be a Christian. And

I still believe that all of that is part of it.

But I was convicted. I had an aha moment reading

the scripture the past couple weeks. In this

life there will be suffering. Ecclesiastes 4

.10 says we will have suffering. Jesus himself

in John 16 .33 tells us we will have trouble.

All of us have lived lives with Jesus and without

Jesus. And we know that suffering, troubles happen

no matter what relationship we have with Jesus.

We will have suffering. You can choose to suffer

with Jesus or suffer without Jesus. I'm going

to choose to suffer with Jesus by my side. Being

a child of God means you got Jesus by your side.

And family, ladies and gentlemen, with mental

health being a huge issue in our society, I'm

telling you right now, please do not suffer in

silence. Get a friend. Get a support group. Get

prayer here today at the end of this service.

Find people to walk alongside. Life happens.

The world bears down. The enemy attacks. Find

your concilium, your Christian family to walk

with. When Jesus told Peter to feed his sheep,

he was also telling each of us to do the same.

Being a child of God means to take care of each

other. Speaking of caring for God's children,

you guys know we have an awesome kids wing, right?

As we're transitioning from the end of summer

to the beginning of a new school year, the number

of children is greatly, steadily rising, and

the number of teachers is doing the opposite.

So while you are praying about being called,

I want to encourage you for the next couple days.

Take time to pray and ask God if helping in a

kid's wing is something you might be called to

do. Churches die when they don't take care of

their children, when they're not leading up the

next generation. So, so far I've given a couple

of examples highlighting what it means to be

a child of God. I didn't give you an exhaustive

list. We could talk all day, listing plenty of

characteristics. You guys know I talk too much

anyway. So I'm going to leave you with one last

scripture to help you align with Jesus. This

is another aha moment that I had. Think about

the Last Supper in the upper room. In Matthew

26, Jesus is with his disciples in the upper

room. Starting in verse 20. When evening came,

Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve.

And while they were eating, he said, Truly I

tell you, one of you will betray me. They were

very sad and began to say one after another,

surely you don't mean me, Lord. One after another.

Peter, surely you don't mean me, Lord. John,

surely you don't mean me, Lord. James, Andrew,

surely you don't mean me, Lord. And Philip and

Thomas and so on. Every disciple acknowledges

Jesus as Lord, Savior. Messiah. But look down

in verse 25. Then Jesus, the one who would betray

him, said, Surely you don't mean me, Rabbi. Judas

acknowledges Jesus as Rabbi, as teacher, which

he was. But he doesn't acknowledge him as Lord

and Savior. How do you acknowledge Jesus? Understand

that Jesus is the Lord and Savior. That's what

you need to be a child of God. He is not just

teacher, not just rabbi. He is not just carpenter.

He is not just man. He is King of Kings, the

Great Shepherd, the Lamb of God, the Light of

the World, Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor.

He's the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the

Last. But most importantly, out of all those

things, He is my Lord and Savior. The Lord and

Savior over my life. Now listen, when you identify

as a Christian, that means you wear the name

of Jesus on your heart. The name Christ is in

your identity as Christian. How do you acknowledge

Jesus? Which leads us right into our last action

step. Number two. Once you recognize Jesus as

your Lord and Savior, you will be transformed.

Romans 12, 1 and 2. Therefore, I urge you, brothers

and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer

your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing

to God. This is your true and proper worship.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world,

but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Then you will be able to test and approve what

God's will is, his good and pleasing and perfect

will. Christian, you have his name stamped on

you. First of all, it's not a renewing of our

minds, or it is a renewing of our minds, not

of our bodies. Trust me, I'm 50. Our bodies are

decaying. I know at 50 what has already started

to happen to my body. When I look at my mother

and my father, I see it in them. Except my father

does have hip replacement, so I guess. The renewing

of our bodies comes with our inheritance. The

renewing of our bodies comes right out of the

time, right around the time that Jesus will create

our new earth. But the passage tells us to be

transformed by the renewing of our minds. I love

this word transform. I prefer it to change. You

will be changed. You will be refined. But here's

why I like transform. Because I think of that.

Semi -rig named Optimus Prime, the Transformer.

He's rolling down the road as a semi -truck,

right? But when it's time to go into battle,

he transforms from a truck into a better version

of himself. Does he lose any part of himself?

No, he is reformed, reconfigured, refined in

such a way that he can fight the battle. Guys,

it's not about changing who you are. It's about

being transformed. Gold is heated. It's melted

and refined. Be transformed. Allow your gold

to shine through the dirt. Today, if you're ready

to be transformed, if you're ready to be part,

Of the family of God to become a child of God.

I want you to say this sinner's prayer with me.

Say this salvation prayer with me. Repeat these

words. If this is you, Rudy, it's time for me

to be transformed. I'm going to give up and give

in to Jesus. Let's do this together. Put your

hands out. And as a church family, repeat after

me. Jesus, without you I am lost. I am broken.

With you I am found. I am whole. I believe you

are the Son of God. I believe you died for my

sins. Open the door of my heart. Come into my

heart. Transform me. Make me new. Give me your

Holy Spirit to partner with. In Jesus' name,

amen. Now, I promised I would make it through

without crying, and I did. But if you are like

me these past couple weeks and you are struggling

with your identity, I want you to take a step

of faith and come up here. Step forward. If you're

struggling with what it means to be a child of

God, I have a scripture that I want to pray over

you. So I just ask anyone who is struggling to

stand up, come forward, and take a leap of faith

with me. In fact, everyone just stand with me.

And that way nobody gets singled out as they

come forward. If I wasn't preaching this message,

I would be standing right down front. Because

I myself have been struggling with these mental

health issues the past couple weeks. To the point

where I doubted I should even give this message.

But who better to give the message than somebody

who has been dealing with it? Who better to speak

the name of Jesus than people that are walking

through it? So if I can just have some men step

forward and put hands on men. And ladies step

forward and put hands on ladies. I want to read

you this scripture. I want to speak this Bible

passage over you. It comes from Roman 8. Romans

8, 14 and 15. For those of you, all of you, all

of us who are led by the Spirit, you are children

of God. The Spirit you receive does not make

you slaves. It does not make you weak so that

you live in fear again. Rather, the Spirit you

have received brought about your adoption to

sonship. And by Him we cry, Abba, Father. We

become extraordinary heirs of Jesus. While we're
