vibrant response. So good to see you. If you're

us into your space. It's so good to be home,

to be back in the saddle. We had a great vacation.

I'm rested. And I'm ready to jump back into advancing

the kingdom of God. Dare I say, friends, that

God is moving in our community of faith. Last

Sunday, I attended our annual pool party and

baptism, and we baptized 52 people. 52 people

publicly declared that they are now following

Jesus. Last night, We saw hundreds of people

gather to declare they were all in for our worship

night and back to school bash where we prayed

over the teachers and the students so that they

would go be a light into their schools. It's

funny, you're away on vacation and you don't

realize how much you miss it until you attend

a baptism like that. Last Sunday evening, Jess

and I were sitting in bed and we were just discussing

what we saw and how we experienced it. We had

three people from our Hagerstown health care

location, God bless you guys, that got baptized

in their wheelchairs. And we literally found

ourselves in our bed talking and weeping over

the experience. excitement and the joy of pastoring

a church that's seeing people come into a relationship

with God. It's so exciting to be a part of. A

big thank you to Stephen and Rhett and Rudy for

stepping in and leading our Sunday gatherings

in my absence. It's so refreshing to know that

I can take a break and trust that God is going

to mightily use each of them in a special way.

So this morning, Pastor's picks for the month

of August continues, and I have chosen to spend

the final two weeks of August focusing on money,

finances, and stuff. Now, some of you, right,

you're sitting there, and immediately upon hearing

that topic, you're thinking, come on, Chris.

You just got back from vacation, and you're going

to talk about money in church. Well. Money impacts

every area of our life. If we're to think about

an ordinary day of each of our lives, like an

ordinary day, like tomorrow being Monday, money

is a big part of it. We spend our day accumulating

or trying to earn money. We spend other parts

of our day spending our money. And then the rest

of the day, or at least a big large portion of

it, are the worries that come along that is associated

with... Money. So if we're honest, money consumes

a lot of our lives. And see, once we begin to

follow Jesus, he invites us to make him Lord

of our life. And some of you are thinking, what's

that mean? Well, it just means he becomes the

number one priority in our life. And this includes

everything. Not just our spiritual life of prayer

and Bible reading and worship, meditation, encouragement

on Sunday mornings or in groups. See, our relationship

with Jesus is to be holistic. It's to include

all of our lives, our relationships, our children,

our jobs, our service, our hobbies, our sports,

and yes, even our money. But there's a tendency

for us to separate our finances from our relationship

with Jesus. See, quite often as people, we want

to hold on to our money with a clenched fist.

But when we try to control our money and our

finances and our own strength, we quickly learn

it's to our detriment when we try to handle money

independent of God. Because after all, we have

a heavenly father that is a good father. We have

a savior that is very, very wise. We have the

Holy Spirit which reveals God's plans and purpose

to us every single day. In fact, As you read

through the gospels, you quickly realize that

Jesus' instructions for how we should live our

everyday lives, he promises it will release abundance

into our life. Why would we not want abundance

for our finances? Now please understand, I've

been pastoring this church for 19 years now,

and probably for the first 12 or 13 years, I

very rarely spoke about money. And it wasn't

because... I didn't think money was a valuable

topic. Rather, I didn't want the perception of

our community of faith or our church to be the

one that they just want my stuff. They want my

money. Rather, I wanted our perception as a church,

as a community of faith to be, no, they give

it all away to serve people and to see our community

of faith be a change agent for God's kingdom.

However, over the last five or six years, God

has been changing my life. And I've gained an

understanding of the importance of this topic

in the church, which is you and me. Because,

just like I said earlier, it impacts our everyday

lives. So these next two Sundays are all about

what God wants for you in the area of your finances.

Not what we want from you, but what God wants

for you. And in order for us to understand the

importance of our finances and our everyday lives,

we have to see life differently. We have to see

and look through life with a kingdom lens. Now

this past Monday, I had an eye appointment with

the eye doctor. And as I was going through the

tests, I quickly realized that I was losing my

sight. I couldn't even read the first line on

the first card. Now, I didn't know this, but

he had to switch down a card so it was like jumbo

-sized letters so I could read the first line.

Now, after struggling to read these lines, they

drop down the medical machine, you know, that

makes you feel like you're putting on Iron Man's

armor. And they begin to flip through the lenses,

and they ask you questions like one or three

or... So you've been to the eye doctor. Then

by the end of the session, I could see clear.

I was like, I was in my arm romance. I was like,

oh my gosh, Iron Man, I'm healed. I could see.

Only to learn from the doctor that I should be

wearing glasses all the time, every single day.

So next week, you will see me sporting a new

look for the foreseeable future. But what if

today... we take a look at the lens of our financial

life. And we see that our lens for giving determines

something about our life's pace, our life's spending,

and the outlook that we have. What if a clearer

vision for giving creates a clearer vision for

living our life because our focus impacts our

function? How we see life, how we walk through

life, it impacts who we are. And to see our finances

through a new lens, we have to see our giving

through a kingdom lens. And we will achieve this

by understanding what the Bible says about our

finances. Now, before I jump into these new lenses,

let's first answer a simple question this morning.

Why give? All right, Chris, I'm tracking with

you. Why should I give? Now, I'm going to miff

through these points rather quickly so that we

have an understanding, a foundation, if you will.

that God has something to say in the area of

our finances. First, giving makes us more like

God. Giving makes us more like God. John 3, 16,

for this is how God loved the world. He gave.

Everyone say, He gave. His one and only Son,

so that everyone who believes in Him will not

perish but have eternal life. See, God set the

example for all of us, not just us in the church,

but outside of the church. By allowing his son

to die so that humanity can have a relationship

with the creator. God was the first to give.

Next, giving draws us close to God. Matthew 6,

21. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires

of your heart will also be. You know, I mentioned

earlier that money and finances, they consume

a lot of our day. They can also consume our entire

life. If we allow them to. And Jesus here challenges

us. Prioritize him first. Giving is the remedy

for materialism. 1 Timothy 6 .18 Tell them to

use their money to do good. They should be rich

in good works and generous to those in need.

Always being ready to share with others. Materialism

is rampant in our society. Two words. Storage

bins. Or sea containers. We need to break the

chains of materialism. Giving strengthens our

faith. Proverbs 3, 5, and 9. Trust in the Lord

with all your heart. Do not depend on your own

understanding. In other words, don't make financial

decisions on your own. Honor the Lord with your

wealth and with the best part of everything you

produce. In other words, the first fruits. Giving

invests in God's kingdom, 1 Timothy 6 .19. By

doing this, they will be storing up their treasure

as a good foundation for the future so that they

may experience true life. See, God's kingdom

is the only kingdom worth investing in. Because

in the end, that's all that matters. Giving blesses

us in return, Luke 6 .38. Give and you will receive.

Your gift will return to you in full, pressed

down, shaken together to make room for more,

running over, poured into your lap. The amount

you give will determine the amount you get back.

Jesus promises all of us that our giving will

result in a life of abundance, of joy. Because

finally, giving releases joy, Acts 20, 35. You

should remember the words of the Lord Jesus.

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Now

that word blessed quite often is misunderstood.

Because when we think of blessed, we think, oh,

I have more stuff. But blessed is actually defined

as to be made holy or consecrated, endowed with

divine favor and protection. And the Greek definition

of the word blessed comes from the word makarios,

which describes a follower of Jesus as being

the receiver of God's provisions or favor. of

being an extension of his grace. And notice that

happens when we give, not when we take or we

get. Which leads us now, let's change those lenses

to discussing seeing giving or finances through

a kingdom lens. Five different lenses that will

transform our whole mindset on giving. And first

is the inspired giving lens. The inspired...

Giving lens is the moment in our life when we

see someone, not necessarily someone that we

know, in need, and suddenly our heart leaps within

our chest and our conscience speaks to meet that

need. You're behind someone in Walmart that's

checking out, they're counting coins, they're

setting stuff aside that they can't purchase

because they don't have enough money, and immediately

you say, put it on my bill. I want to meet that

need. That is the inspired. Giving lens. What

just happened? Our heart was inspired. The Holy

Spirit spoke to us to meet the need, to make

a difference, to give to someone else. Paul,

writing to the church in Corinth in 2 Corinthians

8, 7 -12, writes these words to all of us. Since

you excel in so many ways, in your faith, your

gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm,

and your love from us, I want you to excel, everyone

say excel, also in this gracious act of giving.

Now I'm not commanding you to do this, but I

am testing how genuine your love is by comparing

it with the eagerness of the other churches.

You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus

Christ, though he was rich, yet... For your sakes,

he became poor so that by his poverty, he could

make you rich. Here's my advice. It would be

good for you to finish what you started a year

ago. Last year, you were the first who wanted

to give, and you were the first to begin doing

it. Now you should finish what you started. Let

the eagerness you showed in the beginning be

matched now by your giving. Give in proportion

to what you have. Whatever you give is acceptable

if you give it eagerly. And give according to

what you have, not what you don't have. A few

things I want us to notice from these words.

First, Paul promises us nothing in response to

our giving. Notice, he doesn't say, when you

give, God's going to rain down gold bars from

heaven. He doesn't say anything about God blessing

us. Why? Because we don't give to get, we get

to give. reminds the church of their initial

excitement to give, to make a difference. Now

he wants to compel them, to inspire them, to

continue to live in that way every single day.

And he even writes, I'm not commanding you to

do this. Rather, I'm testing your hearts. I'm

testing your attitude on giving. Paul says to

give based on what you have, not what you don't

have. That's freedom for many of us. See, when

we gather together, there should never be this

feeling of shame or guilt around the area of

giving. This is why I tell you what to give.

I don't tell you, hey, you give this amount.

I say be convicted by the Holy Spirit and allow

him to tell you what to give. We are simply called

to steward what God gives us. We can't be comparing

our giving to what others give. Some of us steward

a lot more than others of us. Our goal should

be participation in the kingdom of God. An inspired

giving lens is one where we're participating

with HTV to give God and his kingdom the opportunity

to advance throughout the tri -state area. A

question we can ask ourselves today around the

inspired giving lens is, what does God want me

to do with my stuff? Whose stuff is it? Ah, now

in a room like this, we're going to say, oh yeah,

it's all God's. Oh, it's all God's. But here's

reality. Typically, when referencing what we

own, it's my stuff. And I'm going to do with

it what I want. So the question is, what are

you doing with it? Which leads us to our next

lens, the obedient giving lens. See, we move

from the inspired giving lens, the initial step,

Of the Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts to

meet a need to make a decision to consistently

and obediently give to God's kingdom. Paul continues

to write to the church in Corinth and he writes

this. 2 Corinthians 9, 6 -8. Remember this. A

farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a

small crop. But the one who plants generously

will get a generous crop. And remember though,

I want to pause there. Remember what Paul said

earlier. based on what you have, not on what

you don't have. See, God is not keeping a chart

in heaven of who gives a lot and who gives a

little. Let's continue. You must each decide

in your own heart how much to give. Don't give

reluctantly in response to pressure, for God

loves a person who gives tearfully. I want to

pause there for just a second. As I was reading

those words this week, I began to ponder. about

our offering time, about the opportunity that's

given to us to give back to God. What if, on

a Sunday morning gathering, we actually cheerfully

gave with excitement? In other words, Rhett prays

for the offering, the welcome team starts to

collect, and people are saying, yeah, let's go!

Could you imagine that? Now, some of you are

thinking, Chris, that's a little weird. I've

never seen that in a church before. But my question

is, why not? Because Paul's words just said God

loves a cheerful giver, an excited giver. That

actually should be our response every single

Sunday. I shouldn't have to manipulate you by

passing a basket around to think, oh man, I've

got to give. No, we should be excited and passionate

and happy about our gift. Maybe next week. Continuing

on. And God will generously provide. Notice,

when we're cheerfully giving, what's he going

to do? Provide for everything we need. Then you

will always have everything you need and plenty

left over to share with others. So in this letter,

Paul is challenging the people to first, right,

give. Cheerfully. Be excited about it. But if

you were to read the whole letter, you have to

remember, Paul is writing this letter to the

very first church. So the people in this church,

they're new believers. They're trying to figure

out this Jesus thing. Right? He's telling them,

get rid of sin. Get rid of infidelity. Get rid

of greed. Be respectful to one another. Pray

for one another. But he wastes no time in addressing

the issue of money. Why? Because Paul knew what

Jesus taught. That money should be a blessing,

not a burden for our lives. Right? We don't give

out of compulsion or guilt. We give out of the

blessings that God gives us every single day.

Consistency, church, is important in life. I

am a person of habits. I love my habits because

I've learned that habits change my life. Right?

I'm healthy. I made exercise a priority. I eat

right. I take care of myself. I have made that

a habit and a consistent pattern in my life.

Because, see, consistency over time changes our

desires. That's why Jess and I, right, we have

our offering or our tithe taken out of our paychecks

before we even receive our pay. Like, it's gone.

10 % gone because we want to give above and beyond

what God has set an example of what giving should

be. We want to be generous givers. And the same

happens in our relationship with Jesus. Right?

What is the sign of a mature believer or a mature

follower of God? Let me tell you what it's not.

It's not that you can quote 41 verses of the

Bible. It's not that you can give me an interpretation

of Revelation chapter 3 or when the end times

Revelation 3 · chapter mention

are coming. It's not that you can fast four weeks

out of the year. It's not even that you're on

the prayer team. None of those. The sign of a

mature believer is consistent obedience over

the course of your life. Being an example of

Jesus by your words and your actions to your

family, your friends, and your community. And

see, obedience is the key to experiencing the

life of abundance that Jesus promised. A question

we can ask ourselves regarding this lens, what

do I do with God's stuff? Because see, what you're

going to learn is, these five lenses, they're

a trajectory that changes our very outlook. First

we ask, what do I do with my stuff? Now we're

asking, what do I do with God's stuff? Because

when we recognize that it's all God's, then we

begin to change, which leads us to our next giving

lens, the intentional giving lens. Jesus speaking

to us in Luke chapter 14, verses 28 to 30. But

Luke 14:28–30

don't begin until you count the cost. For you

would begin construction of a building without

first calculating the cost to see if there's

enough money to finish it. Otherwise, you might

complete and leave the foundation before running

out of money, and then everyone would laugh at

you. They would say, there's the person who started

that building and couldn't afford to finish it.

We have to be intentional in terms of our giving.

We have to consider that God has blessed us with

everything in his life. Now my giving has to

reflect what God has done for me. Why is this

important? This is very important because we

all live in a culture that tells us we need this

to be happy. We live in the Amazon Prime, one

-click, buy -it -now world. You're lying in bed.

You can't fall asleep. Your pillow is hard. It's

so uncomfortable. It's 1 o 'clock in the morning.

You wake up. You go to Amazon Prime. You watch

the video. This pillow will change your life

forever. It's cooling, it's soft, you will sleep

like you never have before. With this one click,

for $125, your life will be changed. It arrives

in two days, you sleep on it in one night, only

to realize the $16 Walmart pillow is just as

good. Every time you check out a store, if you

still go to a store, what do you see? More stuff

for you to buy while you wait in line. A question

to ponder for the obedient giving lens is, what

am I giving to God, if anything? God is challenging

us that giving is important and is a priority,

which leads us to our next lens, our fourth lens,

the spiritual giving lens. Now I'll be expanding

on these verses from David next Sunday when I

discuss and break down his prayer. 2 Samuel 24,

24 reads, I will give it all to you, your majesty,

and may the Lord your God accept your sacrifice.

But the king replied. So David, he was looking

for a place to make a sacrifice to God. He finds

this man that was willing to give him his land

and give him everything he needed to make this

sacrifice. But notice David's response. No, I

insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt

offerings to the Lord my God that have cost me

nothing. So David paid him 50 pieces of silver

for the threshing floor and the oxen. David is

not going to make a sacrifice to God, right?

Based on someone giving him the sacrifice. He

purchases the land. He purchases the material

to build the altar. He purchases what he needs

to make the sacrifice. Then he makes the sacrifice.

David made prayerful consideration. Before he

made the offering before God. Because that offering

cost him something. This is important. Because

in our spend it now culture. That says hey you

earned it. Spend it on whatever you want, however

you want, even if it means going into debt. Let's

be honest. Living on a budget and prioritizing

giving rather than receiving goes against what

our society believes. It goes against everything

that our society believes. But when we separate

our finances from our spiritual life, you know

what that is? That's manipulation. That's control.

You're controlling your own life. When we remove

the voice of the Holy Spirit to speak to our

hearts about our finances and our giving, then

we make it about our jobs, we make it about me,

we make it about our families, and we take God

out of the equation. But when we allow the Holy

Spirit to control our finances, right, when our

giving is surrendering control of our finances

to God, it changes everything, Proverbs 3, 9

through 10. Honor the Lord with your wealth and

with the best part, the best part of everything

you produce. Then he will fill your barns with

grain and your vats will overflow with good wine.

Now for the last six months, Jess and I have

been doing a two -year financial stewardship

initiative through Vineyard USA. Vineyard USA

got a $5 million grant from the Lilly Foundation.

So that their pastors, all the pastors in our

movement, can go through a two -year financial

stewardship initiative where we learn about budgeting,

where we learn about investing, where we learn

about retirement, so that as we get older, we

actually have something to live for. Now, a part

of this initiative, we actually have a financial

coach that meets with us every single month.

James and Amberlee Rich, our financial coaches,

are actually coming to the East Coast and will

be at HTV for a weekend seminar coming up in

September. We're calling it Money Talks. It will

be a Friday night and a Saturday morning to early

afternoon. Child care will be provided. And they

will be sharing the ins and outs of what it looks

like to budget, to live within your means, to

give and to give extravagantly, to see the kingdom

of God forcefully advance. I want to encourage

all of you, if you have an opportunity to jump

in on that weekend, be a part of it. You can

sign up at the Welcome Hub. We already have it

happening during our first gathering. We had

several families already signed up. It's an important

part of who we are. A question. for all of us

to ponder based on this lens. What does God want

me to give out of what he has provided? See how

we're changing the questions. We're changing

our outlook. This question now focuses on stewardship.

Not my stuff, but God's stuff. That God is in

control of every area of our life. Because remember,

God provided the job. God provides the income.

God desires that we give. Which leads us to our

final giving lens, the surrendered giving lens.

Paul, writing to his young protege Timothy, writes

these words. And it's rather lengthy, but I feel

that it really speaks to where we are as a culture.

1 Timothy 6, 6 -19. Yet true godliness with contentment

is itself great wealth. Notice that. Notice how

he starts it off. You should be content with

what you have. That that's godliness. After all,

we brought nothing with us when we came into

the world, and we can't take anything with us

when we leave it. I've done a lot of funerals,

and I've never seen a hearse pulling a U -Haul.

So if we have enough food and clothing, let us

be content. But to people who long to be rich

fall into temptation or trap by many foolish

and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin

and destruction. For the love of money, notice

that it says the love of money, not money. It's

the root of all kinds of evil. And some people

craving money have wandered from the true faith

and pierced themselves with many sorrows. Teach

those who are rich in this world. Look at your

neighbor and say, you are rich. Now look at your

other neighbor and tell them they're rich. Church,

we are rich. Teach those who are rich in this

world not to be proud, not to trust in their

money, which is so unreliable. Their trust. Should

be in God who richly gives us all we need for

our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to

do good. They should be rich in good works and

generous to those in need. Always be ready to

share with others. By doing this, they're throwing

up their treasure as a good foundation for the

future so that they may experience true life.

See, true freedom is understanding the church.

Everything we have, everything we own is from

God. He provides it. And he desires that we give

it back to him first so that we can continue

to make a difference for the kingdom of God.

Now, many of you know a few weeks ago, I shared

about God challenging my heart and giving me

a vision where we lead and take over Meredith's

Park for a night of worship this fall during

our Compassion Weekend. Do you guys remember

that? You were all excited about it. You were

cheering about it. You were just like, yes, we

need to do that. Well, I, believing that God

gave me that vision, took a step of faith and

said yes. I stepped out and rented the facility.

Only to learn that the cost of the event was

going to be much larger than I initially expected.

Much larger. I began to question myself. God,

am I supposed to do this? Holy Spirit, did I

not hear from you? Was that the enemy? Was that

a distraction? Should I move forward? Should

this happen? Should this take place? And I began

to question hearing from God. Three days before

I went on vacation, I was working out on a Thursday

morning, and my phone began to ring. And please

understand, when I work out, I don't answer my

phone. And many of you know when I work, I don't

even talk to you because that's my time. And

I'm into habits and that's what I do because

that's my time. But as the phone was ringing,

I began to hear you need to answer that. I felt

God was speaking to me and told me to answer

it. So I did. On the other end of the line was

a friend and a local business owner who began

sharing with me that he was actually working

in Meredith Park that morning. And while he was

working in Meredith's Park, he looked over the

field and saw thousands of people worshiping

together to proclaim the name of Jesus over this

area. He went on to say that he would commit

$5 ,000 to the community night of worship during

the Compassion Weekend at HCV. I had no words

to respond. I had to walk to the back of the

gym because I was visibly weeping and crying

because I was questioning whether we should even

do the event. His words to me were, I'm getting

the ball rolling, more people will respond. And

that was the encouragement that I needed, that

God would provide the funds needed to make this

event a reality. That we are called to gather

churches together to celebrate the name of Jesus,

to declare revival in our lives and in this area.

To see hundreds of kids around the world hurting

and in poverty sponsored by people that are rich

in the faith. So to take it a step further, if

you're a business owner or you feel compelled

by the Holy Spirit to give towards this event,

The money that is dedicated to Gather 2025 will

become a reality and will grow directly to it.

If you are a business owner, everything can be

written off and the ball is already rolling.

I need about four more businesses to give $5

,000 to the event and it will be paid for. So

we must remember, God was the first to give.

And he desires that we give back to him first,

John 3, 16. For this is how God loved the world,

that he gave his one and only son so that everyone

who believes in him will not perish, but have

eternal life. I just want to let you know, this

church is here today because our family surrendered

it all to return to Hagerstown, our hometown,

to plan a church for people who typically don't

fit in church, to reach the forgotten. To reach

the outcast, to reach the sinner, to see the

broken healed, to see chains broken off of people's

lives, to welcome those on the outside into God's

family. That's what our community of faith is

all about. And please understand, 19 years ago,

when we moved back home, We sold our house in

Syracuse, New York, and we made 40 -some thousand

dollars. I don't know the exact amount. I'm not

going to say the exact amount because my wife

will tell me I'm lying. So I'm going to say 40

couple. Say 44, 45. Normally I say 50. She says

I'm lying, so I'll cut it down a little, okay?

The point was it's a lot of money to me. And

we took all that money and we invested it in

what you're sitting in. And this church is a

reality because our family surrendered it all.

And the question for you and for all of us is,

will we continue to surrender and give it all

back to God and give it to him first so that

we can experience true abundance? Our question

for our final giving lens, what does your giving

say about your God? What does your giving say

about your God? Because you must remember, we're

setting an example to our children, our grandchildren,

and the community about how great our God is.

And if we're not prioritizing Him with our finances

and giving to Him first, then we're telling them

He's not a priority. When in reality, we should

be setting an example that He's the most important

priority. Will you stand with me? So many of

you know that every single Sunday, I pray a simple

prayer because that's the most important surrender

that you could ever make. I believe God brings

people into our midst every single weekend that

are distant, far from God, have walked away from

God, that have never met him. And he invites

them to give their lives, to surrender their

lives to him, even on a Sunday when we talk about

money. So I'm going to pray a simple prayer.

I'm going to invite you all to pray it with me

because I believe people are going to come home

into God's kingdom this morning. Let's pray.

Jesus, I'm broken. I'm full of doubt, shame,

regret, sin. Change me. I believe you're God's

son. I believe you died for me. Make me new.

Set me free. Fill me with your spirit. Help me,

God, to serve you and give you everything. In

Jesus' name, amen. If you prayed that prayer

for the first time, see me, high -five me, hug

me, tell me, text me, do something so I can give

you some next steps and tell you how to walk

out this thing called a relationship with Jesus.

Now, before we go, there are several words of

knowledge. And these are specific. You have an

itchy skin condition on the lower part of your

left leg. You have pain on the right side just

above your hip and your stomach. You have right

shoulder tendonitis. You have pain in your right

believe that God moves. Healing happens in this

corner. Let me tell you that. You're going to

be hearing testimony soon of what God is doing

in this corner right here as people are getting

prayed for. So if you ever need prayer, find
