Justified! Just Faith It! | Dr. John Ewart

You're going to hear from God today as we share from his word

about important issues facing your life that can guide you

according to the Bible. Well, marry Mommy's day.

Amen. Yeah.

Thank you all very much. Hey, thanks for being here on

Mother's Day. Appreciate you all.

It's a right and honorable and biblical thing for us to do to

honor our mothers and fathers. So I'm glad we could do that for

a moment. I know that you're ready to take

mom to lunch. And so just bear with me for a

few minutes, please. A very important message today.

Maybe you're going to make your mom cook.

Surely not. Surely not.

I don't know who Shirley is, but tell her no.

You know, my mother was just not a very good cook.

I know some of you, a great mom cooks, bless her heart.

And she knew that she, she, she cooked like 5 really good

things. Now, I married a woman who's an

incredible cook. And one of the things that she

does is she also makes my mom's five things for me.

She'll do that at holidays and she'll do that at special

moments. And I, I, I'm at those moments,

all bets are off. I'm gorging myself.

I've just, I've probably send the scent of gluttony on those

days because I'm going to eat about all I can eat on those

special moments with those special dishes.

I was thinking about that. You know, later this year, we're

going to go down to Brazil, about 40 of us.

And we're going to have the opportunity to go to a Brazilian

steakhouse. I don't know if you've been to a

Brazilian steakhouse, a real 1, a real Brazilian steakhouse, a

steakhouse or a show. Roscaria is a, is an all you can

eat meat fest. I mean, this is fantastic.

You got a green card or a red card and you keep that green

card and they just keep bringing you meat.

They just keep bringing you meat and they'll sit there and

they'll carve it off and put it on your plate and put it on your

plate until you just like to die from the meat sweats, you know,

like to pass out. So you all, you all hungry, you

all getting there. Well, the passage in Romans 3

today is a lot like that, frankly.

I mean, it's just verse after verse full of of real meat for

us to chew on. According to one theologian and

commentator, Leon Morris, who's written a pretty brilliant

commentary on Romans, he says it's possibly the most important

single paragraph ever written. It's a pretty powerful

statement, isn't it? So incredible, incredibly

important that we need to carefully study it today as we

continue in our series justified in our study of Romans, Martin

Luther adds about this passage. Martin Luther says it's the

chief point and the very central place of the epistles and of the

whole Bible. I mean, you got to go, wow.

I mean, that's pretty heavy. And so we need to pay close

attention. Now for those of you who are our

guest, we've been studying the book of Romans verse by verse

for the last several weeks and we've already been told by the

Bible that we are all great sinners.

Doesn't matter your background, doesn't matter who you are, that

this is a universal problem of humanity that we do things that

are contrary to God's word and God's will.

And so we need to be very careful in our culture today, in

our world today to we talk about being a self-made man or a

self-made person. Be very careful about trying to

be a self-made person because too often you're going to end up

worshiping your own maker, just yourself.

Jonathan Edwards, the great catalyst for spiritual awakening

in our nation in years past. So if there would be ground for

you to trust in your own righteousness, then all that

Christ did to purchase salvation and all that God did to prepare

the way for it is in vain. And so we recognize already, and

we've already seen that Christ has already performed the needed

saving work. The universal problem has a

solution. The universal problem of sin has

already been solved by Jesus. But, and that's what, by the

way, what makes the gospel, what we would call good news for

those who may not be familiar with that or even great news.

But the question then for us is how do I receive, how do I

personally receive the benefit of that great news?

You've heard testimonies, you you all hear evidence about

every week with people being baptized and sharing their

testimonies. The baptism doesn't save them.

They're testifying of Christ who has already saved them.

But you hear this evidence, you see these testimonies every week

of how they received this. And So what we see is, is that

we have to believe it. We truly must faith it.

We just need to faith it. Look at chapter 3, verse 21.

Let's dive into this because we, we got to cover some territory

here. And I want to get you out in

time to make mom go home and cook you a big meal.

So surely you're not doing that. I know Taco Bell, Waffle House,

right? That's it.

Romans 321. Be funny if you see me there.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from

the law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it.

The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all

who believe and I just have a few things I want to talk about

what faith in Christ leads to because and you'll see them on

the back your your Worship guide or you can download them online.

But faith in Christ truly is the only true path.

But it's the true path to several things.

First of all, it's the true path to being right.

And so after describing in previous verses our horrible

sinful condition, Paul now gives glorious hope.

Just look at the 1st 2 words of this verse, this first verse

here. But now, in other words, in

contrast to what we've been talking about, now there's hope.

Since we made such a mess of ourselves, how in the world

could a holy righteous God ever declare us as right?

Job asked the question in Job 9. He said truly I know that it is

so, but how can a man be in the right before God?

I mean God himself must intervene.

This is the only way this works. God himself must intervene to

rescue us from his own wrath. And that's why it says, but now

the righteousness of God has been manifested and the way that

verb is written in the in the original language, it means that

God made his righteousness to be manifested.

He did this. We couldn't do this, we couldn't

make this happen. We couldn't force him to do

this. We could not achieve

righteousness on our own. We could never become

righteousness enough to fulfil the demand by God because of our

sin. So God had to provide the

required God kind of righteousness through his Son

that that verb manifested in its original meaning means to shine

or to light up. It can refer to the rising of

the sun. So God literally has to light up

or he lit up his righteousness so that we might be able to see

it, so that we might be able to have access.

Says the Old Testament spoke of it, but then we recognize Jesus

fulfilled it. Paul writes to several churches

about these matters and Ephesians chapter 2 he says, but

Ephesians 2 · chapter mention

now in Christ Jesus you were once were far off have been

brought near by the blood of Christ to the Colossians in

Colossians 1. He is now reconciled in his body

of flesh by his death in order to present you holy and

blameless and above reproach before him.

So God's righteousness is manifested it literally.

It's invading the world so that we can see it.

But now, through the Messiah, Jesus can change everything.

So we were lost with no hope. We had no way to do this.

There was no way this was going to have, no way I could be

right. But Christ Jesus did what we

could never do for ourselves. And so through our faith union

in him, we can have right standing before God.

And so though we are not righteous in ourselves, God

chooses to act. God chose to act to see us as

right in Christ Jesus if we just have faith in Him, if we

believe, Philippians 39 says, and be found in him.

Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but

that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness

from God, that depends on faith. Faith's a big word.

You might be here and you believe things about Jesus, but

you don't believe in Jesus. And so this is an important

message for you to listen to for a few minutes.

We are given a righteousness. We cannot earn it.

We're given this righteousness. We are justified as a

theological word for it. We're justified in Christ.

Wayne Grudem, who writes, who has written many books, he's a

theologian, has a systematic theology about this thick that

those of us who teach in seminaries or work through

seminary education, almost all have probably read that book or

been exposed to it. He defines justification this

way. It's an instantaneous legal act

of God in which he thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ's

righteousness as belonging to us and declares us to be righteous

in a sight. It's an amazing transaction that

takes place. Faith in Jesus and believe in

Him. Faith in Him.

You said as a verb, faith in him, believe in him.

That's all the word believe means in the English

translations of the Bible. It just means to have faith.

Faith in Jesus and God can declare you forgiven.

He can declare you justified. He can declare you in right

relationship with Him, not because of you, not because of

something you do, but based upon the sinless life, the death, the

resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.

Again, Paul writes to the churches about this.

He writes to Corinth and he says for our sake he made him to be

sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the

righteousness of God. But don't mistake this.

This is not some easy beliefism. This is not some light generic

faith or knowledge about Jesus. This is a true belief in a

specific particular person, Jesus Christ and what he's done.

The word faith or to believe means to trust.

It doesn't just mean to know, it means to trust in, it means to

depend upon, it means to commit to.

This is an entire being experience.

This isn't just some knowledge thing.

I mean, there are people who don't believe in Jesus as the

Lord and Savior, who believe in Jesus as a historical person.

He was a good prophet. He was a moral teacher.

He was actually somebody who lived.

I mean, there's a lot of evidence that points to the fact

that somebody named Jesus lived and died and that that he was

real. And so people believe that, but

they don't believe that he can do anything for them.

So believing about Jesus is not the same as faithing in Jesus.

So we're not right before God because we work for him somehow.

We're right before God because we trust in the work that Jesus

Christ has already done. So if you love being right all

the time, anybody know that person?

If you love being right all the time, I know people who are

often wrong, but never in doubt. Think about that for a minute.

Could be on some people's tombstones, I know.

But if you like being right all the time, trust in Jesus and

you'll be made right for all of eternity.

It's the only way, the only way you're going to get there

because He's the only true path to being right.

Listen to Romans 322, the second-half of that verse 22,

for there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short

of the glory of God. A verse that many of us know and

we would actually use as we share the gospel with somebody,

but we often forget verse 24. Don't just memorize verse 23,

memorize verse 24 too. And are justified by His grace

as a gift to the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

This is massive. So not only is he this path to

being right, just faith in Christ is the only true path to

freedom. Listen everybody, and remember

the context of Romans. You have Jews and Gentiles

making up this church, and Paul's been spending a lot of

time in these first chapters talking about the needs of both

of these groups. And so everyone, Jew and Gentile

alike, fall short of God's glory and require God's grace gift

found in Christ alone, because there's only one true path to

eternal freedom. And and you got to see and

understand what some of this means for the the word used for

sin Here it is, is the most commonly used Greek verb and it

means to miss the mark. But we, we, we missed the mark

in a couple of different ways. And so we can fall short.

It can mean like falling behind in a race.

Everybody else has left you behind.

Or it can mean that you never reached the goal, you never

reached the the the finish line. Or it could mean, and this is a

common illustration, that it's like an arrow that you shot

that's always shooting short of the target.

And so this is the idea of falling short.

We never get there. We never get there on our own.

And and I want you to think with me because you're going to miss

the target in at least two different ways.

One way is bad aim. Sometimes we're not shooting at

the right things, we shoot at the wrong things in life.

The people, people think that they can handle this on their

own. They think they can do this

themselves. I'm a self-made person.

I can do this. I'm pull myself up by my own

bootstraps and handle life all by myself.

I don't need God. And so they have the wrong aim.

Their aim is themselves. They are their God or something

else has become their God. Money or power or popularity or

whatever it is and they're shooting at the wrong target.

And notice in this verse, it's very clear we're fall short of

something very specific. We fall short of the glory of

God. That's the target.

My target is to bring God glory. Now don't miss this because what

that suggests is, is that we don't understand God's glory.

We fall short of it. We don't understand Him.

We don't understand what He deserves from us.

So think about how we articulate God's mission here at Inglewood.

We say this very clearly. God is going to bring glory to

himself, and we're to join him in redeeming the nation's.

Because here's the bottom line. God will bring glory to himself

with or without me, with or without you, and with or without

Inglewood. But He wants us to be a part of

it. He wants us to bring Him glory.

And when we sin, we fall short of doing that.

We're not glorifying God in our sin, so we're falling short of

this. But another way we miss or fall

short of the target is through a lack of power to shoot the arrow

at its intended mark. In the Lords picture, somebody

who's taking good aim at the target, but their bowstring is

not strong enough to drive the arrow all the way to the target,

and it falls short. See our personal strengths not

enough. Our personal efforts are not

enough. Our works are not enough.

My own efforts are not enough. The arrow is always going to

fall short. I cannot save myself.

I'm always going to fall short. And in our sin, we miss.

We miss God's glory. We fall short of who we're

supposed to be of, of the reason you exist, the reason you

breathe today, you're falling short of that.

You're missing that target. And it's interesting too,

because even the verb tense, oh, I could go deeper.

Sorry, I sound like a professor this morning, But the verb tense

here is even exciting because it means that the lost people who

are doing this are doing nothing but this.

Don't miss that. They're doing this over and over

and over and over and over and over and over again because

they're living for something else.

This is all they do. They're, they're preoccupied

with this. Their whole life centers around

doing something else other than bring God's, bring God glory.

They're bringing them self glory.

They're, they're, they're selfish, they're self-centered,

they're worried about everything this world has to throw at them.

And they're not focusing on who they need to focus upon.

So we fall short of God's glory and sin over and over.

So how in the world, how can I find freedom from this never

ending cycle? It's like an addiction.

And the, the bottom line is what Paul's going to say to us is she

can't not by yourself. No way you're ever going to get

free on your own God. You must do it.

God is manifesting the opportunity and it says, and we

can be justified in this passage.

See God issues a judicial decree to declare those who are in

Jesus Christ justified through faith in Him.

See now the image of a judge would have been really clear to

people who lived in Rome. They wouldn't have a problem

with this because the imperial governor said on an elevated

blue and white platform made out of marble called the bema.

Some of you've heard that word before when you talk about

second coming stuff. But he'd sit upon the bema or

the seat of judgement. Paul stood before a bema in

Corinth when people falsely accused him of things, and he

was found innocent. One day too, we will all stand

before the bema, seat of the Creator and Judge of the

universe. And so we recognize that since

we all fall short of God's standard, then they're the only

way we're going to get out of this.

The only way we can be free is we're going to have to be

justified by some other means. I'm never going to muster up

enough strength to do this on my own, right.

So by His grace, as a gift, people struggle with that.

They want it to be harder. Sometimes the only way to obtain

freedom is to receive it as a gift from Him.

We're declared just as a gift by His grace through the redemption

of the Lord Jesus Christ, though we personally stand guilty, I

mean completely devoid of righteousness before God in and

of ourselves. We, we are declared just by this

incredible, miraculous, supernatural transfer of the

account from Jesus to me. And so then he says through the

redemption, there's another word that is in Christ Jesus.

The word redemption literally comes from the idea of paying

the price necessary for freedom. Often times it comes from the

image of slavery or indentured servanthood.

Christ paid the price necessary to free us from the bondage and

the debt of sin because the only way to avoid debtors prison, the

only way to be not be put to death as a a debtor who couldn't

pay his debt was for somebody else to pay your debt.

Somebody had to pay the bill. And God's perfect holiness

demands payment. Now see if people don't like

that because they just want God to be loved, well, God is

perfect love. God is also perfect truth.

He's also perfect holiness and all parts of those things much

more, but all parts of that perfect nature have to work

together. And so the demand for sin has to

be paid. And we are hopelessly unable to

pay enough to secure our own freedom out of our own goodness.

There's just not enough in there.

We need a Redeemer to pay our debt.

And, and frankly, that's the gospel.

The good news is we have a Redeemer and his name is Jesus

and he's paid the price completely for us.

Now, surely, surely at this moment, on Mother's Day, right

now, right here, right now, surely because of that, you want

to receive this gift and believe like you've heard others testify

about, surely what's stopping you?

God paid the price. He paid the full price to

himself by himself. He did it himself to satisfy the

demands of his own holy, righteous nature.

I mean, what an incredible story.

And since the wages of sin is death, the Bible says we'll see

that verse here in a little while.

In our study, the redemption price that had to be paid was

also death, the death of God's own Son, God's incredibly

gracious gift. It's a free gift being offered

to us, but it cost God everything Peter wrote about it.

Listen, Peter says, knowing that you were ransomed from the from

the feudal ways inherited from your forefathers, not with

perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious

blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Our freedom comes by His grace, and you cannot earn His grace.

You have to receive it as a gift, not the meticulous

observance of your religion won't get it.

You can be here every single time the doors open.

That's not enough. You can actually be in a Connect

group every week and you should be.

But that's not enough. We have to trust, We have to

believe. We have to commit.

We have to faith in Jesus so that meticulous observance of

religion won't do it. Salvation is not about trying

harder. Salvation is not about doing

more. It's about receiving God's grace

and being absolutely transformed.

In fact, there's an old creed, you know, it's been around

forever. But people will say this.

People will still say this to me sometimes.

God helps those who help. Who?

Yeah. That's neither the gospel nor is

it in the Bible. It's not true.

There's a price to pay for us to be purchased into freedom, a

price to pay for God's wrath. We were bought with a price.

Corinthians. First Corinthians tells us the

most expensive gift ever conceived or offered.

And he is offering you that free gift.

My friends, I kid you not right now on Mother's Day right here

at Inglewood Baptist Church right now and my prayer, we,

some of us have been begging for this all week.

I'm telling you, a couple of us have been burdened all week for

this to where we we're praying right now that your heart and

your mind are being pierced by the Holy Spirit to where you

know these words are true, but you got to be willing to receive

it. Verse 25, whom God put forward

as a propitiation. There's your big word for the

day, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood to

receive, to be received by faith.

This was to show God's righteousness because in His

divine forbearance He had passed over former sins.

It was to show His righteousness at the present time so that He

might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in

Jesus. The third thing you got to see

is faith in Christ is the only true path to justice.

You'll see what I mean. God put forward Christ Jesus,

God the Son. His sacrifice involved far more

than just a physical death, though.

He died on the cross. And that blood sacrifice was,

was, was a part of this. But there's also this idea of

propitiation. And this is a hard word because

to be honest with you, there's not an adequate English

translation for this word, either in the Greek or frankly

in the Hebrew, where it actually comes from in the beginning.

But the idea of a propitiation is to appease the wrath of God

towards sin. And so the Son of God bore the

penalty from God the Father and paid our price.

We should have had to pay. We should have been on the

cross. So what you call this is a penal

substitution. In other words, He substituted

himself so that we didn't have to die on a cross.

We don't have to suffer eternal death if we'll believe in Him.

He was our substitute. But this word also refers in the

Old Testament to the mercy seat in the Tabernacle or the temple.

In fact, the Hebrew word kapuram, from which they get the

holiday Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is is a part of what

this word meaning comes out of. So you had this annual special

blood sacrifice that was only that was made in the Holy of

Holies to appease God and to pay the ransom for the nation of

Israel's sin. And so the word propitiation can

basically mean the cover of atonement to appease the wrath

of God toward our sin. There was also a scapegoat, if

you'll remember, and they would lay their hands upon the

scapegoat, symbolically laying all their sins upon this animal,

and then they would cast it out into the wilderness so that

would bear their sins away from them, as far away as possible,

to take away their iniquities. So we stand before a judge, a

perfect judge, whose wrath has to be satisfied.

This price has to be paid, and the only just price and penalty

is death. So the crucifixion of Jesus was

the sacrifice, it was the public sprinkling of blood, much like

in the day of, on the Day of Atonement at the altar and the

mercy seat. Here we see the the sprinkling

of blood to pay our penalty. So my only hope, my only hope,

the only hope, the only true path, the only hope is to be

declared just and acceptable to God by the precious gracious

gift that He's offering to you in Christ Jesus.

So we receive this gift through faith in Christ who took our

punishment, satisfying the heavenly courts requirement that

justice be served. And if someone doesn't take our

punishment, you got to hear me clearly.

I'm going to be as blunt and as clear as I can be.

If someone does not take our punishment, we are still under

God's wrath and we still must pay the price eternally for our

sin. Listen to what John says.

Listen to what Jesus says in John 3.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the

wrath of God remains on him. If you reject Christ, you're

still a target of God's wrath, whether you believe that or not,

because you have offended the King of the universe, and he

will punish your sin. Let me be even more clear.

You will go to hell to pay your own price.

That's not my belief alone. That's what the Bible teaches,

clearly. But the good news is praise the

Lord for good news. The good news is that Jesus

already satisfied the Father's righteous anger and wrath on our

behalf, and we can now have peace with God if we have faith

in him. We can be reconciled to and no

longer have the enemies of God. The Bible says, but mercy is

neither earned nor deserved. It it, it cannot be demanded.

It's only offered as a gift. It it can't even be

reciprocated. It can only be received.

Look at verse 27. It says, then, then what becomes

of our boasting? What you got to boast about?

Then it is excluded. By what kind of law?

By by a law of works? No, but but by the law of faith,

where we hold that one is justified by faith, that parts

from the works of the law. Or is God the God of the Jews

only? Is he not the God of Gentiles

also? Yes, of Gentiles also?

Since God is one who will justify the circumcised by faith

and the uncircumcised through faith, Do we then overthrow the

Law by this faith? By no means.

On the contrary, we uphold the law.

So what we see in conclusion is that faith in Christ, very

simply, it's the only true path. There is no other.

The gospel should humble us. We didn't work for it.

We don't deserve it. We're not righteous on our own.

So we don't brag about being saved.

We're just thankful. We should be the most humble,

grateful people on the planet because of what God has done and

and remember the context here of Jew and Gentile.

The gospel also should unite us as believers in that humility.

Regardless of your background, regardless of what you used to

believe, regardless what you didn't believe, regardless of

where you where you're coming from.

We're one in Christ when we believe together, like the

church in the book of Acts, The gospel changed not only our

vertical relationship with God. The gospel changes our

horizontal relationship with one another, which is one of the

reasons that we say in our vision statement here that we

must be and make other disciples who love God and also who we

love others. And we work to fulfill God's

mission so we can rest in his grace.

We can rejoice in the work of Christ.

We while we still grow in him together, while we still learn,

while we still grow in our discipleship.

And we tell other people this incredible good news, but

listen, only by faith and only by faith in Christ, nothing

else, nobody else, no other source, only by faith in Christ

can you become all that you were created to be and fulfill your

life purpose. You want to know why you're

breathing today? Trust in Christ.

Christ is the perfect fulfillment.

He's the perfect fulfillment of the law.

He's the perfect fulfillment of the Scripture.

He's the perfect fulfillment of your life.

And so he's the only true path to transforming salvation.

Now, many of you know the song and many of you know the story,

but I was just reminded about the former slave ship captain

who was miraculously saved and actually became a pastor.

You know, John Newton did not write perhaps the most famous

hymn, at least in the last few centuries, in honor of his own

self-made righteousness. These verses resound from a

formerly empty soul that was filled from above.

Filled from above by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Amazing Grace. How sweet the sound that saved a

Wretch like me. Like me, like this one, I once

was lost but now I'm found. Was blind but now I see twas

grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears

relieved. How precious did that grace

appear? The hour, the hour, the moment,

the second I first believed. Been praying, been begging God

this week that this morning would be that first moment you

believed. I know that some of you have

come here to be with Mama or Grand Mama and you weren't

expecting anything other than endurance to get to lunch.

But my prayer for some of you is that you believe in Him, you

trust in Him, you commit to Him, and that you will be able to see

for the first time. Let Him remove your blindness

and let Him set you free. I just ask you to faith, to

faith in Him, to just faith in Him.

Father, I pray, Lord, that right now Your Holy Spirit would run

rampant in our hearts and minds. Father that Lord, we would be so

overwhelmed in the reality of Your presence that there would

be no doubt. Because, Father, my prayer is

for all of us to be able to say that when we've been there

10,000 years with you, bright shining as the sun, that we'll

have no less days to sing your praise than when we very first

began. My Father, I want everybody to

be there. So, Father, I pray if there's

somebody here right now who's never trusted in Jesus Christ as

Lord, Lord and Savior, their penalty has not been paid.

I pray, Father, this morning will be the morning of faith.

They'll understand You're giving them a gift of grace right now,

and they need to receive it. A Father in a moment when our

offering plates are past, Lord, I pray that this is much more

than some monetary moment that Father, when that plate is in my

hands, that I, I won't necessarily think about what

money is supposed to go in there or the next steps card that goes

in there. But Father, I'm also going to

think, what can I put before you, Lord?

What can I offer to you from my life?

How can I live for you in a greater way?

Maybe, maybe they need to be saved, Father.

Maybe they need to be baptized. Maybe they need to join the

church. Maybe they need to be praying in

a different way, Father. So I just pray, Lord, that

before we go, that Father, our focus will be not on going, but

on you right now coming to you. So Father, bless us as we have

this moment of invitation. Bless us, Father, as people come

forward to pray, to receive you, to learn about baptism or some

other commitment of discipleship, that Father, we

might honor you in all that we do Thank you, Father, in

Christ's name, Amen. May I ask you to stand?
