Believe it or not, it's a very snowy Sunday and

this is only the second time in 20 years as a

community of faith that we had to cancel for

a winter storm. Today will be a beautiful day

of rest. and if you have little ones, fun in

the snow. So I want to encourage you, take advantage

of the downtime, have a positive attitude, nothing

to worry about, and create memories that will

last a lifetime. I still remember my kids flying

down Cannon Hill on an inner tube blow -up at

very high speeds. The happiness, joy, and of

course a little fear on their faces is what life

is all about. So be adventurous. Get out in the

snow and enjoy it. And let's open in prayer this

morning. Holy Spirit, come. God, use this message,

use these words. I'm thankful for the ability

to broadcast live and reach every single person

that's not only in our community of faith, but

is a part of our community of faith. Change us,

God. Open our ears. Allow us to receive and be

challenged by your spirit this morning. In Jesus'

name. Amen. So this morning, I would like you

to pause. Close your eyes and go back to the

time when you met Jesus for the very first time.

Now, if you're watching this broadcast and you're

thinking to yourself, I'm not sure I ever met

Jesus or if I'm in a relationship with him, I'm

going to encourage you, simply close your eyes

and invite God to reveal himself to you because

I believe he will. For those of you in a relationship

with him, think about the difference Jesus has

made in your life. This morning, I woke up early

around 4 a .m., was praying and reflecting on

how insecure I was, how I was lost. Simply walking

through life focused on myself, no purpose, no

meaning. Wasting the time that God had given

me on endless pursuits of selfish pleasure and

gain. numbing my pain and regret with any substance

or person that it would allow me to escape. Then

I met Jesus. I'll never forget the Sunday the

Holy Spirit led me to that church, to that encounter,

to the freedom, the meaning, to living an abundant

life. This morning I found myself thanking God,

praising God for my salvation. For my new life,

my heart was so full of gratitude to God, to

Jesus, for the Holy Spirit. And it was in that

moment I realized I had to invite you into that

same encounter. To pause. To remember what God

has done for you and how he has changed your

life. Not asking him for anything, whether it

be a new car. You know, God, my car is 16 years

old. It's breaking down. Another light is on.

Not asking him for a new job. God, my job, it's

destroying me. Open up a new opportunity or a

breakthrough. God, I need this relationship,

this marriage healed and changed. Simply thank

him for what he's already done. I mean, think

about it. He led us out of the dominion of darkness

and into the kingdom of light. And I thought

about how God invited me into a relationship

with him. It wasn't about me earning it with

my good deeds. It wasn't about whether I grew

up in church or not. It wasn't about how I dressed

or looked on the outside. It was simply about

Jesus and what he did for me, for us, for the

world. And quite often, if we're honest, for

those of us in a relationship with Jesus, we

forget to thank God for that relationship, for

that freedom, for this new life, because we're

too busy asking him, begging him for the next

best thing that we want. Rather than waking and

thanking God for where he has brought us out

of, how he has supernaturally changed us, changed

me, changed you. God, we are so thankful for

how you provide a way for us to experience abundant

life. We are thankful that you brought us out

of darkness and into a family, a community of

life, a community of faith that is bigger than

any one person. See, God did not call us into

a relationship with him for us, meaning he did

not call us to be consumers. He called us into

a relationship with him to be sent. to be sent

to others in need just like I was, just like

you were. God called us into his kingdom to work

through us, to use us to be representatives to

others who don't yet believe and are searching

for meaning and significance in this life. And

listen, if you don't believe this about yourself

today, It's my prayer as we jump into the book

of Matthew that God would reveal that call to

you this morning, which leads us to our first

thought. See, Jesus gives his followers the authority

to do the stuff. Now, some of you are thinking,

do the stuff? Chris, what do you mean by that?

Well, doing the stuff is a key phrase shared

and taught by Vineyard founder John Wimber when

this movement of churches was birthed. The core

idea from Wimber was followers of Jesus should

reach out to others using the power of the Holy

Spirit. Not just knowing about it or reading

about it, but literally living it. Now in the

book, The Quest for the Radical Middle, which

I recommend you to read, John told a story about

he and his wife Carol visiting a church early

in a spiritual journey. Now this was immediately

after he had spent considerable time reading

the four gospel accounts on the life and ministry

of Jesus. Following the service, John approached

the pastor and asked him, Sir, so when do we

do the stuff? The stuff, said the pastor, what's

the stuff? You know, John replied, the stuff

in the Bible, like healing the sick and casting

out demons, that stuff. Oh, replied the pastor.

We don't do this stuff. We believe they did it

back in biblical times, but we don't do it today.

With a rather confused look on his face, John

would go on to say, and I gave up drugs for this?

See, Wimber was all about reading the gospel

accounts and living them as Jesus lived. Today,

we read and focus on Matthew chapter 10, verse

Matthew 10:1

1. Notice, Jesus called his 12 disciples together

and gave them authority. Authority to cast out

evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease

and illness. The disciples were given authority

to do the stuff. To live the way Jesus lived.

And I believe we, you and I, if you're in a relationship

with Jesus, have been given the authority and

power to do the same. Mark chapter 16 verse 15

Mark 16:15

reads, and then he told them, go into all the

world and preach the good news to everyone. Anyone

who believes and is baptized will be saved, but

anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.

These, notice, miraculous signs will accompany

those who believe. Did you hear that? These miraculous

signs will accompany those who believe. See,

Jesus empowered his disciples to do miraculous

works. I believe Jesus empowers us, those in

a relationship with him, for miraculous works.

See, Jesus never had in mind that he was the

only one who, being filled with the Spirit, would

heal and perform miraculous signs. He always

intended for his followers to do them as well.

How can we participate in bringing the power

and presence of God into our daily lives? Let's

read Paul in Romans chapter 15 verses 18 through

Romans 15:18–19

19. In this way, I have fully presented the good

news of Christ. Now notice, Paul makes it clear

that any miracle he ever did was through the

power of the Holy Spirit. See, he was giving

God the credit. He also said, That the goal of

the miracles was to lead people into a relationship

with God. It wasn't about him receiving praise

or him being lifted up. It was about people responding

to the good news of God's kingdom invading our

lives and our community. Church. God empowers

us to do the stuff, which leads us to our second

thought. See, Jesus intentionally uses people

who are not very impressive. Let's continue in

Matthew chapter 10, verses 2 through 4. Here

Matthew 10:2–4

are the names of the 12 apostles. First, Simon,

also called Peter. Then Andrew, Peter's brother.

James, sons of Zebedee. John, James' brother.

Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas. Matthew, the tax

collector. James, son of Alphaeus, Thaddeus.

Simon, the zealot. Judas Iscariot, who later

betrayed him. 12 names, 12 dudes. Who are they?

Well, in this group, we first see four uneducated

fishermen. Also in this group is a man who was

a radical fanatic, a zealot, who would have been

carrying a weapon ready to pull it out against

any Roman authority because he believed in overthrowing

the government by force. There was Thomas, who

had this bad reputation for being a doubter that

will stick with him for the rest of his life.

Matthew, a tax collector, a very wealthy man,

who betrayed his own people and was despised

everywhere he went. A couple of nobodies, James,

the son of Alphaeus and Thaddeus, that no one

knows much about, including scholars, because

history does not tell us much about these two

men. Then there was Judas Iscariot. who was the

only one of the 12 not from Galilee, Jesus' original

area of ministry. So he was an outsider added

to the team, and he would be the one that eventually

betrayed Jesus. Why am I telling you about these

men? Notice, there are no all -stars on that

list, right? Jesus gathered a group of less than

or forgotten people that would go on to change

the entire world. No all -stars, just uneducated

people, a rich atheist, a radical revolutionary,

a few no -names, oh yeah, and a betrayer. A reminder

that God calls people from all socioeconomic

statuses and that Jesus can use anyone that is

fully surrendered to him. See, this group gives

me hope and can give you hope that we can be

used by God. That all of us can be used by God.

Paul again writes in his letter to the church

in Corinth, 1 Corinthians 1, verse 27. Instead,

1 Corinthians 1:27

God chose things the world considers, notice,

foolish in order to shame those who think they

are wise. And he chose things that are powerless,

powerless, to shame those who are powerful. See,

God has a way of picking people that the world

would never choose. Now, you may have had words

spoken over you from a parent. or a teacher,

or a coach saying you would never amount to nothing.

If that is you, God chooses you. See, God wants

to use you to change the lives of the people

in your sphere of influence. See, Jesus first

calls people. He calls you and me to what? To

himself. Then he calls us to look out. He says,

look out and see that the harvest is ripe. And

that simply means we see differently in God's

kingdom. And then what does he do next? He tells

people to go to church, listen to a good sermon,

and do nothing for the kingdom of God. Is that

true? Of course not. It's false. There are too

many followers of Jesus that think that is what

following Jesus is all about. I'll just check

a few boxes during the week. I'll go to a Sunday

gathering. I'll read a few verses of the Bible.

I'll pray over dinner. Friends, there is so much.

which leads us to our third thought this morning.

You see, Jesus sends out his followers with a

mission. Let's continue in Matthew chapter 10,

Matthew 10:5–8

verses 5 through 8. Jesus sent out the 12 apostles

with these instructions. Don't go to the Gentiles

or the Samaritans, but only to the people of

Israel, God's lost sheep. Go and announce to

them that the kingdom of heaven is near. Heal

the sick, raise the dead. Cure those with leprosy.

Cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received.

See, God sent his disciples out, and he gave

them instructions. He just didn't send them out

lost, blind, and wondering. And God calls his

followers to himself. He opens their eyes to

see the needs of the world around them. He sends

them out, but he doesn't just send them out.

He empowers them, guides them to the people that

are in need. See, God calls us and sends us out

to first serve our families. What about our children?

You know, to raise them up to be world changers,

difference makers for God's kingdom. Will you

respond to that calling, fathers? Will you step

up and make a difference in your children's lives?

And some of you may be looking through this camera

thinking, well, Chris, my marriage is struggling.

It's falling apart. We're not communicating.

Well, there's hope. Jess and I are leading the

marriage course. We're bringing it back in the

new year. On Friday nights, it starts in February.

I want to encourage you, be sure to register

next week. God calls us. He sends us to the people

in our sphere of influence, our coworkers, our

classmates, our families that we've been connecting

with at the athletic fields or different games.

God calls us and sends us to our local community.

People living in our neighborhoods, shopping

at Walmart. What about the homeless at the Reach

Cold Weather Shelter? That's right, HTV is serving

there this week. We need your help. There's still

spots to be filled. Go to the QR code. Again,

scan the QR code. And reach out to Kelsey and

serve those that are less fortunate than us this

week. What about the forgotten that are left

in local nursing homes and recovery houses? What

are we to do? Well, Jesus told us. He said, go

and announce to them that the kingdom of heaven

is near. Now, isn't it interesting? Haven't we

heard those words before? Yes. If you're reading

the gospel accounts, it's true. Jesus shared

the same words. John the Baptist shared those

same words. God is challenging you and me. He's

challenging us that our message should be just

like his. God is challenging us. Church, I want

your social media posts to reflect my message,

my words of hope, my love for humanity. See,

what people read on our social media feeds should

not be divisive or negative. They should be pointing

people to Jesus as we live on mission for him.

Which leads us to our final thought this morning.

See, God provides his followers everything needed

to ease the suffering of others. Friends, you

have something to offer others. It doesn't matter

your age, your gender, your economic status,

where you live, what you drive. God desires to

use us. Listen to Jesus' words. Again, Matthew

Matthew 10:8

chapter 10, verse 8. Give as freely as you have

received. Give as freely as you have received.

And what have we received, church? We've received

abundant life, new life, forgiveness, grace.

And God challenges us. He says, use your resources.

Use your prayers, your love, your time, your

stuff, your finances. Just a simple smile, a

hug, a high five can change a person's life.

Look out, look around for opportunities to ease

the suffering of others. 2 Peter tells us, chapter

1, verse 3, by his divine power, God has given

us everything. Say everything we need for living

a godly life. We have received all of this by

coming to know him, the one who called us to

himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.

God has given us everything we need. Everything

we need to start serving others and pointing

them to Jesus. We have to remember provision

follows faithfulness. What does that mean? Provision,

God provides, follows faithful people. And again,

it starts in your home. serving your family.

It moves into our community of faith, serving

others in our community of faith, out into our

sphere of influence and into the greater community.

James chapter 2 verses 15 through 16 reads, suppose

James 2:15–16

you see a brother or sister who has no food or

clothing and you say, goodbye, have a good day,

stay warm and eat well, but then you don't give

that person any food or clothing. What good does

that do? What good does that do? See, when we

step out in faith, God provides as we are obedient

to listen and serve. Listen and serve. Which

leads us to our action steps this morning. Faith

is spelled risk. R -I -S -K. And again, another

familiar saying from Vineyard founder John Wimber.

And our first step this morning in stepping out

and taking a risk is, friends, you have to be

filled with the Holy Spirit. We have to be empowered

to be sent. We can't do it on our own strength.

And dare I say, we won't do it. on our own strength.

We'll be too fearful. We'll be too overwhelmed.

And friends, we don't want to point people back

to ourselves. We want to point people to Jesus.

Ephesians chapter 5 verse 18. Don't be drunk

Ephesians 5:18

with wine because that will ruin your life. Instead,

be filled with the Holy Spirit. Be full of the

Spirit. As we daily walk with the Spirit, our

focus shifts to God's kingdom. Our focus shifts

to people in need of hope, meaning, and forgiveness.

Acts chapter 4 verse 31. Notice, after this prayer,

Acts 4:31

as they were together praying, the meeting place

shook and they were all filled with the Holy

Spirit. But they weren't just filled with the

Holy Spirit. They didn't keep it to themselves.

Notice, they preached the word of God with boldness.

When they were full of the Spirit, they shared

the word of God with boldness. But Chris, I don't

know enough. Of the Bible to preach with boldness.

There's no way I could get on a stage like you.

Good. Okay, I get it. It's intimidating. But

you do know your story. You know your testimony

and how your life is different and changed. Think

about how he opened this gathering. How God brought

you close to him. Radically changed your life.

How has your life been changed? And that's all

you have to share. We learn from a blind man

sharing these words in John chapter 9. I was

John 9 · chapter mention

blind, but now I see. I don't know if he's the

Savior. I don't know his name. But I was blind,

and now I see. Right? This was spoken by a blind

man that was miraculously healed by Jesus. And

it signifies the spiritual enlightenment, the

opening of eyes, the changed life. It represents

moving from ignorance and sin or darkness to

an understanding of what Jesus has brought to

us. How he's changed us. It's not about a biblical

debate. It's about your story. It's about your

hope. And remember, what does it look like? To

live a life full of the Spirit? Well, Galatians

Galatians 5 · chapter mention

chapter 5 tells us, verses 22 to 23. But the

Holy Spirit, being full of the Spirit, produces

this kind of fruit in our lives. It's this fruit

in your life. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self

-control. And see, church, when we live with

those virtues, people pay attention to our lives.

They're drawn to us. They desire to be close

to us. And remember, next Sunday, we kick off

our Holy Spirit class right here in the main

auditorium, 6 o 'clock. Rick and I will be leading

the class every Sunday night for the entire month

of February. Just show up. You don't need to

sign up. Just show up. Pack this house. Learn

what it means to be full of the Spirit, which

leads us to our next step. We're full of Spirit,

and then we listen. Romans chapter 8 verse 16.

Romans 8:16

For his spirit joins with our spirit to affirm

that we are God's children. And you say, well

Chris, what's that have to do with listening?

Well, we have to take time to be refreshed by

the Spirit, to understand who we are, to understand

how God changed us, to pay attention to the Holy

Spirit. See, He speaks words of life, of truth

into our spirits. He speaks words of hope and

meaning. It lifts us up. He illuminates the Bible

so that we are changed from the inside out to

what? To reflect Jesus to others. And as we walk

in obedience, see, God reveals his plan and his

purpose for our lives. 1 Corinthians 2, verse

1 Corinthians 2:10

10. But it was to us that God revealed these

things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches

out everything and shows us God's deep secrets.

See, God first searches our hearts. He wants

us to be right with him. He points out the issues

that need changed. But then I believe he reveals

to us, he speaks to us, people in our sphere

of influence that are in need, that are desiring

more in this life. And then we are their representatives.

And as we listen, God empowers us to share Acts

Acts 1:8

1, verse 8. But you will receive power when the

Holy Spirit comes upon you. You, church, will

be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere

in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria. and

to the ends of the earth. We need to first be

filled with the Holy Spirit. We need to listen,

which leads to our third step. You need to overcome

fear. When Jesus called and sent his disciples

to go in Matthew chapter 10, though it's not

Matthew 10 · chapter mention

recorded, I can guarantee there was some nervousness

and fear. I mean, those men, they had been walking

with Jesus for roughly two years now. They saw

these signs, these wonders, these miracles. And

now Jesus looks at them and says, hey, go do

the same. I mean, that's intimidating. I mean,

we're talking about God here. Remember, Jesus

was fully man and fully God. So these men, they're

literally watching God change lives. And then

suddenly Jesus turns and looks at them and says,

all right, now you go and do the same thing.

That's intimidating. And listen, there's not

a Sunday. that goes by that I'm not questioning

my ability to stand on this stage. That I'm not

wondering if I have the goods to deliver on God's

Bible. You know, this is God's written word.

It can be intimidating to share God's truth with

you. It can be overwhelming. And there's not

a Sunday that goes by that I don't walk up to

this stage and I touch my forehead and I pray,

Holy Spirit, come. I want this to be your words,

not mine. I want the people to receive your truth,

not Chris's good news, but Jesus's good news.

So I get it. Stepping out can be intimidating.

It can be overwhelming. But that's when we need

to turn to God because he reminds us in Joshua

1 .9, church, this is my command. Be strong and

courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged for

the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Isaiah chapter 41 verse 10. Don't be afraid for

Isaiah 41:10

I am with you. Don't be discouraged for I am

your God. I will strengthen you and help you.

I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

See, church, when we receive God's truth into

our spirits, then we have faith. It increases.

It grows. And then the courage comes to step

out, to be empowered. 2 Timothy 1, verse 7. For

2 Timothy 1:7

God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity,

but of power, love, and self -control. So in

Jesus' name, I speak no fear over our community

of faith, over our people here at HCV. And listen,

when you truly love people, silence is not an

option, which leads us to our fourth step. You've

got to step out. Acts chapter 3, verse 6. Peter

Acts 3:6

and John looked at him intently, and Peter said,

look at us. The lame man looked at them eagerly,

expecting some money. But Peter said, I don't

have any silver or gold for you, but I'll give

you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ,

the Nazarene, get up and walk. Amazing story.

Peter's just walking along and he's available.

He's living his life. He's filled with the Spirit.

He heard the cries of the lame man. I'm sure

that man had been laying there for years desiring

people to help him, to give him money so that

he could survive. Peter, he overcame that doubt

and that fear and he stepped out. And notice

Peter didn't even have any money. He didn't offer

the man that was begging money. But what did

he have? He had hope. He had the Holy Spirit.

He had power. And notice Peter spoke with authority

in Jesus' name. Get up and walk. And it's like

the kingdom of God just broke into our world

and supernaturally changed this man. And friends,

when we step out, God honors our faithfulness

with abundance. Listen, it doesn't have to be

the miraculous either. It can be practical. Jesus

teaches us that truth in Matthew 25, verses 34

Matthew 25:34

and 40. Then the king will say to those on his

right, come. You were blessed by my father. Inherit

the kingdom prepared for you from the creation

of the world. For I was hungry and you fed me.

I was thirsty. You gave me a drink. I was a stranger

and you invited me into your home. I was naked.

You gave me clothing. I was sick and you cared

for me. I was in prison and you visited me. And

the king will say, I tell you the truth. When

you did it to one of the least of these, my brothers

and sisters who were in need, you were doing

it. To me. See, stepping out, I believe, is simply

living a life of love. Living a life of obedience.

And what do I mean by that? Read the Bible and

apply it to your life. Pray. Serve others. Give

your time. Give your money and talents. Forgive

others. Live in community with others. See, when

we start with that simple obedience, you know

what happens? Change happens. Change happens

in us, and then opportunities are presented to

us by God. But friends, we have to step out,

which leads us to our final step. You just then

share the good news. Matthew 10, verse 7. Go

Matthew 10:7

and announce to them, the kingdom of heaven is

near. Mark 16, 15. And then he told them, go

into all the world, church, and preach the good

news to everyone. And we have to understand the

gospel, the good news, it's not good advice.

It's power. It brings hope to the hurting. It

brings forgiveness to the broken. And it brings

life to the lost. Good news that isn't being

shared, you know what happens? It stops being

good news. And my challenge to you this week

is let your walk, your relationship with Jesus

back up your talk, back up your testimony. Romans

Romans 10:14–15

chapter 10, verses 14 to 15. But how can they

call on him to save them unless they believe

in him? And how can they believe in him if they've

never heard about him? And how can they hear

about him unless someone tells them? And how

will anyone go and tell them without being sent?

Friends, there is someone in your life who needs

to hear what Jesus has done for you this week.

I believe that. And remember, it's all about

you simply being available. And I want to challenge

you with this simple, short video. And I want

you to watch about an unknown part of a career

of an NBA superstar named Steve Nash. Let's watch.

For those that don't know, in the early 2000s,

Steve Nash won back -to -back MVP titles, which

puts him in very rare company in the NBA. And

in the first year that Steve Nash won the NBA

MVP, he actually only led the league in two statistical

categories. The first, which most people would

guess, is assists. He liked to share the sugar.

He liked to pass the pill. He liked to get other

people involved. Certainly the trait of a great

leader and a great teammate. But what most people

don't know is the second statistic that Steve

Nash led the NBA in that year were physical touches.

I'm actually talking about high fives, fist bumps,

and pats on the backside. Now, you're probably

sitting there wondering, how could I possibly

know that Steve Nash led the NBA in high fives,

fist bumps, and pats on the backside? Well, the

Phoenix Suns, who Steve Nash played for at the

time, were so enamored with this study that they

hired a full -time intern to count just for Steve

Nash. In the first game that the intern counted

for Steve Nash, he delivered 239 high fives,

fist bumps, and pats on the backside in one game.

239. He was a furnace of human connection. Now,

in the game of basketball, where physicality

is appropriate, it has been physiologically proven

that you can transfer energy to another human

being through physical touch. You can indeed

raise someone's game with a well -placed high

-five, fist bump, and pat on the backside. Just

to make sure I'm clear, and certainly HR compliant,

I'm not telling you guys to go patting each other

on the backside when you go to lunch, or patting

a customer on the backside when you leave their

house. But here's what I am telling you to do.

I want you guys to get innovative and creative

in thinking of appropriate ways that you can

make the same type of emotional deposit. Wow.

Simple. The same type of emotional deposit. All

you have to do is be available. All you have

to do is open your eyes to see that the harvest

is ripe, that people are in need. Our world is

broken, full of doubt, full of shame, full of

negativity, full of division. And we have the

answer. We have the hope. We have the meaning

that people are searching for. Will you step

out? And my challenge to you, if you're in a

relationship with Jesus, Who will hear the good

news through you this week? I believe God has

already highlighted someone in your mind or in

your spirit, and I want to challenge you. Step

out and share the good news this week. Invite

them to be a part of our community of faith next

Sunday as we gather again in person. Now, when

I started this talk this morning, I shared with

you that some of you may not. Be in a relationship

with Jesus or wonder if you are in a relationship

with Jesus. And I could not leave this opportunity

without offering you that relationship, that

new life, that abundance. So yes, I may be speaking

to you through the internet or through YouTube

or however it is that you're listening. But by

praying these simple words and meaning it in

your heart, God can radically invade your life

and change you right now. Will you pray with

me? Let's pray. Jesus, I'm broken. I'm full of

doubt, shame, regret, sin. Change me. I believe

you're God's son. I believe you died for me.

I believe you're alive today. Forgive me. Fill

me with your spirit. Fill me with your power.

Help me, God, to serve others. In Jesus' name,

amen and amen. Now, if you prayed that prayer,
