  7. message. Good, good. So good to see a packed

  8. house. Before I jump into our talk today, two

  9. things. If you did not get a communion element

  10. or you did not get a Sour Patch Kid, put your

  11. hand up now because that's all going to take

  12. place at the end of our gathering. I don't want

  13. to interrupt the end of our gathering. So if

  14. you need communion and you need a Sour Patch

  15. Kid, I know it doesn't sound like it makes sense,

  16. but it will, I promise. Bear with me. Put your

  17. hands up. There you go. Our team will come around.

  18. They're coming now. Mike Swain, a previous banana,

  19. you know, we got it. So just keep it up. There

  20. we go. All right, bring it back. That's not freedom

  21. to talk. Just put your hand up. All right. I

  22. don't want to be your teacher here. I don't want

  23. to be your teacher. I want to be your leader.

  24. All right. I want to share with you about Jonah.

  25. All right. We also have a group. I want to let

  26. everyone know. We also have a group of people

  27. leaving today for North Carolina. They're heading

  28. down for a week to serve and to repair houses

  29. that were destroyed a few years ago when all

  30. the floods came through near the Asheville area.

  31. So we have a whole team of people headed to North

  32. Carolina for this week for construction. So if

  33. you could be praying for them, please do. And

  34. I'm going to open in prayer now as they're handing

  35. out all this stuff so that we can refocus and

  36. bring ourselves back. Is that cool? All right,

  37. let's pray. Jesus, we invite you into this place.

  38. Holy Spirit, come. God, open our minds, our hearts,

  39. our ears to receive your truth today, God. May

  40. we see a little of Jonah in all of us, God. May

  41. we leave this place different and open us up,

  42. God, to your truth this morning. And bless that

  43. van as they're heading to North Carolina, God.

  44. May they have just supernatural encounters with

  45. people. May we hear testimonies of all that you

  46. did through their lives, not just serving, but

  47. pointing others to you. We're grateful, God,

  48. for all that you're doing in our community of

  49. faith. In Jesus' name, amen. All right, so for

  50. those of you that haven't been here, if you're

  51. new, welcome. We're glad you're here. We're in

  52. the fourth and final week of our series, God's

  53. Scandalous Mercy, A Journey Through Jonah. And

  54. if you have been here, I don't know about you,

  55. but this has been a great series thus far, right?

  56. Do you think so? I have learned so much about

  57. Jonah, but more importantly, I've learned a lot

  58. about myself. Today we'll be reading from the

  59. fourth and final chapter of the book. But before

  60. we jump in, let's take a look at this recap that

  61. I found on YouTube from Jonah himself. Are you

  62. ready? Let's watch. What's up, fam? Jonah here.

  63. So God said, go to Nineveh. Yeah, hard pass.

  64. We're running. Wish me luck. Just booked a one

  65. -way trip. Destination, not Nineveh. Let's see

  66. if this works. Okay, so, apparently there's a

  67. huge storm up top. Me, I'm vibing down here.

  68. Nap game strong. Hit subscribe for more travel

  69. updates. Turns out this storm, kind of my fault.

  70. Should I just jump? Welp. Booked a trip to Tarshish.

  71. Now I'm getting unbooked. Overboard we go, I

  72. guess. See ya. So, quick update. Inside a giant

  73. fish now? Yep. Should've just listened to God.

  74. My bad, Lord. Super sorry. Lesson learned. Lord,

  75. I was wrong. Please forgive me. I will go to

  76. Nineveh. Just deliver me from this place. Okay

  77. update out of the fish alive praise God Nineveh

  78. here I come after some serious cleanup All right

  79. in Nineveh about to preach Super excited. Can't

  80. you tell? Yeah, I mean either All right So Jonah

  81. was called by God to go and preach the city of

  82. Nineveh. The Assyrian people were, of course,

  83. his sworn enemies. Jonah said, no, thank you.

  84. Booked a trip to Tarsus, more than 2 ,000 miles

  85. away from Nineveh. God sends a storm to stop

  86. Jonah. The storm was so frightening that the

  87. sailors, fearing their own lives, commit to following

  88. God and throw Jonah overboard to quiet the storm.

  89. Jonah then finds himself in the belly of a large

  90. fish for three days and three nights. He repents,

  91. and God has the fish vomit Jonah back on the

  92. shore of Joppa. God speaks to Jonah a second

  93. time, and last week we learned that God is a

  94. God of second chances. He goes to Nineveh and

  95. preaches what could be the worst and shortest

  96. sermon ever recorded. Five words, you are going

  97. to burn. In one of the greatest miracles ever

  98. recorded in the Bible, God uses that sermon to

  99. convict the people. They all turn back to God

  100. from the least to the greatest. We see one of

  101. the greatest revivals in all of human history

  102. take place. And the people in the city of Nineveh

  103. celebrate God's mercy for giving them a second

  104. chance. And I believe if God can do that miracle

  105. in Nineveh, he can do it anywhere. Because God

  106. is a God of second chances. And as a community

  107. of faith, we believe that God wants to do the

  108. same thing through us in the tri -state area.

  109. We have a big God -sized vision to see the kingdom

  110. of God invade the hearts of people all the way

  111. from Virginia up into Pennsylvania. Just this

  112. year, we've nearly baptized 200 people and we

  113. are believing that many more will come in the

  114. coming months. But here is what is tough about

  115. the book of Jonah. If the story ended in revival,

  116. It would be perfect. It would be the Disney ending.

  117. Unfortunately, it doesn't end in celebration

  118. or revival. Jonah has one last plot twist, which

  119. leads us to our first thought. It's possible

  120. to follow God's commands and not reflect his

  121. love. Think about it. The whole nation, from

  122. the king, the richest... in the city to the very

  123. poorest turned to God. And how do you think Jonah

  124. responded? Well, Jonah was a preacher. He was

  125. similar to me. This national revival breaks out.

  126. I can tell you right now that if everyone in

  127. this gathering turned and declared that Jesus

  128. is their Lord and began following him, I would

  129. be celebrating and doing backflips. It would

  130. be like hitting a walk -off home run in the bottom

  131. of the ninth inning for me personally. If all

  132. of you, Get me into a relationship with Jesus

  133. today. It would be one of the greatest days that

  134. I've ever celebrated. But Jonah, Jonah preached.

  135. They repented. And what did he do? Well, let's

  136. learn. Jonah 4, 1 through 3. This change of plans

  137. greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry.

  138. See, Jonah wasn't happy. Jonah wasn't worshiping,

  139. right? Everyone in Nineveh is celebrating. The

  140. Bible tells us that all the angels were celebrating.

  141. Even us today are declaring this is a miracle.

  142. We are celebrating the fact that hundreds of

  143. thousands of people came into a relationship

  144. with God, but not Jonah. Now the Hebrew word

  145. used for Jonah's reaction is the word ra. Everyone

  146. say ra. Doesn't that kind of sound angry? Right?

  147. It sounds negative. Well, ra is translated as

  148. exceedingly evil. And it's actually the same

  149. word God used to describe the Ninevites in chapter

  150. 1. The Ninevites were ra, exceedingly evil. And

  151. now you see Jonah's reaction to God's mercy is

  152. ra. And you begin to wonder, how can he have

  153. that type of reaction? Let's continue. So now

  154. he begins to complain to God. He complained to

  155. the Lord about it. Didn't I say before I left

  156. home that you would do this, Lord? That is why

  157. I ran away to Tarshish. I knew that you are a

  158. merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry

  159. and filled with unfailing love. It's amazing.

  160. He's complaining about God's characteristics.

  161. The things that we celebrate, Jonah's what? He's

  162. complaining about them. You are eager to turn

  163. back from destroying people. Just kill me now,

  164. Lord. I'd rather be dead than alive if what I

  165. predicted will not happen. Now, after reading

  166. those words this week, I made it begin to thought

  167. about Jonah. It's like, really? I mean, this

  168. is God. And you're going to be upset and angry

  169. and screaming at God? And it's really easy for

  170. us to throw shade at Jonah until we put ourselves

  171. in his shoes. And that's what I want to challenge

  172. you to do today. Remember in week one, I told

  173. you about the Ninevites, how they would rape

  174. the women, they would murder the kids, they would

  175. take over an entire area, they would kill the

  176. soldiers, putting their heads on top of the cities.

  177. Scholars tell us that it's possible, in fact,

  178. very likely, that some of Jonah's own family,

  179. possibly his mom and his dad, his grandparents,

  180. maybe some relatives, that they were tortured,

  181. killed, and murdered by the Ninevites or the

  182. Assyrians. So when we're looking at Jonah, we

  183. have to realize there's history, painful history.

  184. And we all need to acknowledge that Jonah eventually

  185. did what God asked him to do. God told him to

  186. go and preach to the Nevites. He did it. He did

  187. the will of God, but he wasn't happy about it.

  188. And what did he preach? 40 days from now, you

  189. better turn or God will destroy you. And Jonah

  190. is simply showing us a problem that all of us

  191. have. He shows us that it's possible for us to

  192. follow God's commands and not reflect his love.

  193. It's possible to do what God wants, but to do

  194. it with the wrong attitude, with negativity and

  195. wrong motives. And it could be any number of

  196. different ways in our life as we are in a relationship

  197. with Jesus. I've seen it greatly in the church

  198. when it comes to money. Once a year, I do a three

  199. to four week series on money and giving and tithing,

  200. and it's constantly pushback, pushback, pushback.

  201. Does God really tell us to deal with money? And

  202. then he convicts us, and then we give a little,

  203. but we don't really want to, and then we're upset

  204. at the messenger. It's Chris's fault. You're

  205. justifying tithing. It really isn't biblical.

  206. Jesus never spoke about it. Then begrudgingly,

  207. Right? To clear our conscience, we throw a $20

  208. bill in. You know, it's a hard issue, church.

  209. I talk about it because Jesus talked about money

  210. nearly more than anything else when it comes

  211. to topics because he knew that money was the

  212. closest thing to our hearts. Or it comes to service.

  213. I challenged all of you last week, serve in our

  214. community of faith. Give your time, right? And

  215. maybe you are here and you're serving and you're

  216. committing your life to serving and you're serving

  217. in the kids or the welcome team, whatever it

  218. may be, but what's your home life like? Are you

  219. being harsh and negative at home, but being happy

  220. and smiling here? Or it could be the exact opposite

  221. saying, okay, God, I'll go to church. I'll go

  222. to church. I'll show up, but I don't have time

  223. to serve. I'll go to church, but someone else

  224. can take care of my kids. I'll go to church,

  225. but I can't show up early and high five people.

  226. Or then it's the other factor where we judge

  227. others because of their big sins. while we harbor

  228. pride and bitterness and prejudice in our own

  229. hearts. You know, God knows our hearts, church.

  230. He knows our attitudes. He knows everything that

  231. goes in and out of our mouth, what we say, what

  232. we think. And he's challenging us to get real

  233. before him, to identify ourselves, that there's

  234. times in our life where we serve, yes, where

  235. we do the things of God, but our heart is just

  236. in the wrong place. And when it comes to love,

  237. 1 John 4, 8 and 20 says, but anyone who does

  238. not love does not know God, for God is love.

  239. If someone says, I love God, but hates a fellow

  240. believer, that person is a liar. For if we don't

  241. love people, we can see how can we love God whom

  242. we cannot see. It's possible to follow God's

  243. commands and not reflect his love. And the story

  244. continues, which leads us to our second thought.

  245. Selfishness and unforgiveness lead us away from

  246. God. Jonah chapter four, verses four through

  247. five, the Lord replied, is it right for you to

  248. be angry about this? Then Jonah went out to the

  249. east side of the city and made a shelter to sit

  250. under as he waited to see what would happen to

  251. the city. So picture this. Jonah preaches one

  252. of the worst sermons ever recorded. He gets out

  253. of town, leaves town, goes up on a hill east

  254. of the city, and he's hoping that the city will

  255. be destroyed. And it's interesting that this

  256. very specific direction is in the Bible. One

  257. more time. Which direction did Jonah go? East.

  258. He went east. And this is important because in

  259. the Bible, anyone who travels east, this is often

  260. a picture or represents moving towards exile

  261. and bondage. Many times in the Bible, when someone

  262. travels east, they're moving away from God's

  263. will because of selfishness and unforgiveness.

  264. Let's look at a few examples. You got Adam and

  265. Eve in Genesis 3, 24. After sending them out

  266. of the garden, The Lord God stationed mighty

  267. cherubim, notice where, to the east of the Garden

  268. of Eden so that they would not come back in.

  269. Genesis 4, 16. So Cain left the Lord's presence

  270. after killing Abel, and notice where he settled,

  271. in the land of Nod, which was the east of Eden.

  272. Genesis 13. Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan

  273. Valley to the east. east of them. He went there

  274. with his flocks and servants, but the people

  275. of this area, notice, were extremely wicked and

  276. constantly sinning against the Lord. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 8 chapter mention

  277. chapter 8, then he brought me into the inner

  278. courtyard of the Lord's temple at the entrance

  279. to the sanctuary between the entry room and the

  280. bronze altar. There were about 25 men with their

  281. backs to the sanctuary of the Lord. They were

  282. facing east, bowing low to the ground and worshiping

  283. not the Lord but the Son. What did Jonah do?

  284. He didn't obey God. Then he listened to God with

  285. impure motives. And then he finds himself going

  286. east, probably because we now know he's not trusting

  287. God again. And this is where it gets personal.

  288. Jonah was a prophet. and he claimed to follow

  289. God. All throughout the book, if you were to

  290. read the four chapters, you can read that Jonah

  291. called God his Lord and the Lord. He believed

  292. in God, but in this case, he turned his back

  293. to God. He moved away from him. God, I claim

  294. you and your ways, but once again, he turned

  295. his back toward God, hoping that God would destroy

  296. the city. And it's not uncommon to see that in

  297. the church today, unfortunately. People will

  298. say, hey, Jesus saved me. And they know him by

  299. name, but they have not made him Lord of their

  300. life. Meaning they want to remain in control

  301. of their own life. They want to do what they

  302. want. They don't want to submit to God's authority.

  303. And this is not God's best. Because simply when

  304. people do that, they're saying that we believe

  305. in Jesus. We love Jesus with our spoken words,

  306. but our actions simply don't line up. Our lives

  307. are not producing good fruit. And Jesus said

  308. this, one day people are going to be like, Hey,

  309. I called on you, Jesus. I did these works in

  310. your name. I went to church in your name, God.

  311. I did all these things, Jesus. And Jesus will

  312. look back and say, I've never known you. Because

  313. they personally haven't made him Lord of their

  314. life. They haven't prioritized that relationship

  315. Monday through Saturday. And unfortunately, I

  316. wonder if there's anybody here, and I can pastorally

  317. say, I love you, and that's why I'm saying this.

  318. Do you claim God with your lips, but you live

  319. with your back towards him? And the good news

  320. is simply this. All you have to do is turn. That's

  321. all God is inviting you to. He's inviting you

  322. back to himself. So here we got Jonah, and I'm

  323. actually starting to understand him a little.

  324. And the reason I'm understanding him is because

  325. I see a little bit of Jonah in myself. What is

  326. Jonah ultimately doing in this situation? He's

  327. throwing a tantrum. He's acting like a child.

  328. And if you're anything like me, we're all the

  329. same way. We get frustrated. We get aggravated.

  330. Things don't go our way. And then we get negative

  331. and spew venom at the people we love. We make

  332. judgments and we say things we regret. He was

  333. hurting. He was frustrated. He's mad. He's uncomfortable.

  334. Things were not going his way. And now he finds

  335. himself baking in the hot sun, which leads us

  336. to our next thought. Humanity wants God's blessings,

  337. but pushes back on God's growth. Jonah chapter

  338. four, verse six. And the Lord God arranged for

  339. a leafy plant to grow there. And soon it spread

  340. its broad leaves over Jonah's head, shading him

  341. from the sun. This eased his discomfort. And

  342. Jonah noticed now how he changes his attitude

  343. was very. grateful for the plant. So first God

  344. provides a fish to save Jonah from the sea. Now

  345. God provides a plant to cover him, and he was

  346. very happy, extremely grateful. And the Hebrew

  347. word used here was the word weizma, and it means

  348. to rejoice greatly or exceedingly overjoyed.

  349. In other words, this isn't like finding $20 in

  350. your pants pocket. I mean, that's a good day

  351. that we can smile about. But the word used here

  352. in the Hebrew, Jonah was celebrating that he

  353. won the lottery. That's the type of joy he was

  354. experiencing. He was exceedingly overjoyed. And

  355. why was he happy? Because of God's blessings.

  356. God sent a plant to shade him from the sun and

  357. he was happy. Not. Not because of the people

  358. that turned to God. Not because of the hundreds

  359. and thousands of people that were saved because

  360. of God's mercy. It was all about him. And that's

  361. the part that makes me uncomfortable because

  362. that's me. Jonah loves receiving God's blessings,

  363. but notice what he's doing. God's going to now

  364. teach him a lesson. Jesus is the good teacher.

  365. God wants us to grow, but sometimes allowing

  366. us to walk through the wilderness and tests.

  367. God is about to give Jonah an object lesson.

  368. And Jonah didn't like the lessons. He's like

  369. many of us. He wants to skip the lessons and

  370. get right to what? Get right to the blessings.

  371. Give me the blessings, God, but I'm not ready

  372. to change. Jonah 4, 7 through 8, but God also

  373. arranged for a worm. The next morning at dawn,

  374. the worm ate through the stem of the plant. and

  375. it withered away. And as the sun grew hot, God

  376. arranged for a scorching notice, east wind, negativity,

  377. frustration to blow on Jonah, the sun be down

  378. on his head until he grew faint and wished to

  379. die. Death is certainly better than living like

  380. this, he exclaimed. So what is happening? Jonah

  381. is having a pity party. He's throwing another

  382. tantrum. And in our eyes, we're thinking, this

  383. is pathetic. And as you read this story, We're

  384. so quick to criticize. But it's incredible that

  385. the Bible includes all these details about his

  386. emotions. It's very real. I mean, think about

  387. it. Jonah's all over the place. He's up. He's

  388. down. He's happy. He's sad. He's celebrating.

  389. He's angry. He's worshiping. He's praising. He's

  390. screaming at God. He's all over the place. I

  391. don't know about you, but I can be just like

  392. that. In fact, while studying the book of Jonah,

  393. there's now expert research done on his personality

  394. that measured historic Jonah against today's

  395. personality types and different mindsets. Now,

  396. what I want you to do is I read these three different

  397. mindsets and approaches. See if you identify

  398. with any of these behaviors. The first one is

  399. this. He had erratic mood swings ranging from

  400. courageous obedience. to extreme dissatisfaction

  401. and anger, suggesting underlying frustration

  402. and the need to control. I know that's none of

  403. you, but I'll put a check for me. The next one

  404. is this. He had entitlement issues, focusing

  405. on his own views of justice and expecting God

  406. and others to operate within his parameters.

  407. The things that make you go, hmm. The third one,

  408. he had depressive symptoms manifesting from feelings

  409. of burnout, sadness, anger, and hopelessness.

  410. I don't know about you, but I just checked all

  411. three boxes. It's so easy to criticize this guy's

  412. emotional tantrums and drama. I get it. We're

  413. reading the story. But if we're honest and admit

  414. it, we are just like Jonah. I can obey God with

  415. great faith one moment and then ignore God and

  416. do my own thing the next. I can be in the presence

  417. of God, worshiping him passionately, authentically,

  418. with heartfelt song and dance on a Sunday morning.

  419. And then Monday, I can be apathetic, even act

  420. like he doesn't even exist. I can be completely

  421. obedient to the promptings of the Holy Spirit,

  422. praying for someone, seeing signs, wonders, and

  423. miracles break out as I pray. And the next day,

  424. God prompts me to do the exact same thing. And

  425. I say, no, that's the devil. I don't have time

  426. for that. We hate the lessons. But we sure do

  427. love the blessings. All of us can relate. It's

  428. kind of like these two plants from that object

  429. lesson. We can look at them and say, oh, this

  430. is definitely God's blessings. It's healthy.

  431. It's plentiful. It's growing. Oh, this is God's

  432. temptings. This is God's tests. This is God's

  433. wilderness. But what if we flip the script? And

  434. what if we said that abundant life is obedience?

  435. abundant life as walking through tests and seeing

  436. us come out stronger on the other side. When

  437. in reality, when we focus on self and selfishness,

  438. we're a dead, dying, withered plant that can

  439. go nowhere. That's why James 1, 2 through 4 says,

  440. Dear brothers and sisters, when trouble of any

  441. kind comes your way, consider it an opportunity

  442. for great joy. Not just joy, but great joy. Why?

  443. Because you know that when your faith is tested,

  444. your endurance has a chance to Grow. So let it

  445. grow. And when your endurance is fully developed,

  446. you will be perfect and complete, needing absolutely

  447. nothing. Let's all learn from Jonah on what not

  448. to do when God wants us to grow and change, which

  449. I believe he wants us to do every single day.

  450. Let's be grateful and joyful because as we walk

  451. through those testings, we receive God's blessings,

  452. which leads us to our fourth thought. Getting

  453. a second chance is easier than giving. A second

  454. chance. Jonah 4, 9 through 11. Then God said

  455. to Jonah, is it right for you to be angry because

  456. the plant died? Yes, Jonah retorted. Even angry

  457. enough to die. Then the Lord said, you feel sorry

  458. about the plant that you did nothing to put it

  459. there. It came quickly and died quickly. But

  460. Nineveh has more than 120 ,000 people living

  461. in spiritual darkness. Not to mention all the

  462. animals. Shouldn't I feel sorry for such a great

  463. city? And see, what is being exposed through

  464. Jonah's actions is a deeply seated racism and

  465. hatred that Jonah had towards his enemies, the

  466. Assyrians. And I get it. The Assyrians were a

  467. brutal group of people, the type of people that

  468. if they were alive today and we saw their actions

  469. on the news and their evil, I believe that many

  470. of us would pray for God to intervene, for God

  471. to get rid of them. But here's the issue when

  472. God intervenes. It may not be the way we want

  473. him to move. Remember, God is using Jonah as

  474. a mirror to reflect issues in our heart. And

  475. the reality is all of us have those people in

  476. our lives. It may not be the Assyrians, but who

  477. are those people in your life that God is calling

  478. you to give them a second chance? See, maybe

  479. these people, they dress a little different.

  480. Maybe they talk different, look different, vote

  481. different than you. Maybe it's people that sin

  482. different than you. Right? I sin, but not how

  483. they sin. Maybe it's someone that has hurt you

  484. in the past. A parent that wasn't there for you

  485. as you grew up when you needed them the most.

  486. Maybe it was a friend that betrayed you or a

  487. spouse that said for better or worse, but apparently

  488. didn't mean it. The book of Jonah is causing

  489. us to look in the mirror and that mirror is looking

  490. back at ourselves saying, who is it in your life

  491. that you're harboring bitterness and unforgiveness?

  492. And isn't it true that it's much easier to be

  493. forgiven by God than to extend forgiveness to

  494. those that have hurt us? Jonah, we see it. He's

  495. wrestling with God. He's now angry. He's angry

  496. that God extended mercy to a group of people.

  497. We saw that Jonah knew God's character. He knew

  498. that God would forgive. And friends, in today's

  499. world of social media and news, we're constantly

  500. bombarded with opportunities for our hearts to

  501. be corrupted with hate. judgment, and unforgiveness

  502. towards others. Jonah didn't have an issue with

  503. receiving a second chance from God. We see it

  504. all through his life. But he did have an issue

  505. with giving a second chance to others. And we

  506. have to realize that all of us have a little

  507. hypocrite in our hearts. How do I know that?

  508. Brene Brown writes this in her book. I thought

  509. it was just me. The biggest potential for helping

  510. us overcome shame is this. We are those people.

  511. Truth is, we are the others. Most of us are one

  512. paycheck, one divorce, one drug -addicted kid,

  513. one mental health illness, one sexual assault,

  514. one drinking binge, one night of unprotected

  515. sex, one affair away from being those people,

  516. the ones we don't trust, the ones we pity, the

  517. ones we don't let our kids play with, the ones

  518. bad things happen to, the ones we don't want

  519. living next door. What is she saying to all of

  520. us? We're quick to see the faults in others,

  521. but so easily the myths false in our own life.

  522. We judge others by what they do, but we judge

  523. ourselves by our motives. We judge others by

  524. what they do, but we extend grace to ourselves

  525. when we need it after making a bad decision,

  526. choice, or reaction. And Jesus warns us in Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  527. chapter 7, why worry about a speck in your friend's

  528. eye when you have a log in your own? How can

  529. you think of saying to your friend, let me help

  530. you get rid of that speck in your eye when you

  531. can't see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite.

  532. Get rid of the log in your own eye, then you

  533. will see well enough to deal with the speck in

  534. your friend's eyes. And when it comes to God

  535. giving grace, it's our decision. The fact that

  536. we even think that we're capable of making that

  537. judgment shows that we're hypocritical. and shows

  538. that we have no business harboring unforgiveness

  539. and anger towards others. Jonah's story is our

  540. story. And that's why it makes it difficult to

  541. read, which leads us to our fifth and final thought.

  542. God is for us, but not just us. God is challenging

  543. us through the book of Jonah to see that God

  544. is a God for all people. He is the God of creation.

  545. And this book is challenging us to see that we

  546. cannot allow our prejudices nor our politics

  547. to determine who God can and can't love. It's

  548. for us. God is not just for us. He is for all

  549. people, and he desires to see all people come

  550. into a loving relationship with him. We read

  551. in Jonah 4 .11, but Nineveh has more than 120

  552. ,000 people living in spiritual darkness, not

  553. to mention all the animals. Should not feel sorry

  554. for such a great city. I mean, you see God challenging

  555. Jonah, open your eyes. This is truth. There were

  556. people in that great city that were not committing

  557. the horrible atrocities that the soldiers are

  558. doing and have done to the Israelites. And that's

  559. why Jesus taught us in Matthew 5, you have heard

  560. the law that says, love your neighbor and hate

  561. your enemy. But I say, Jesus says, love your

  562. enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

  563. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6, 12, we are not

  564. fighting against flesh and blood enemies. Let

  565. me read that again. We are not fighting against

  566. flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers

  567. and authorities in the unseen world, against

  568. mighty powers in this dark world, and against

  569. evil spirits in the heavenly places. And remember,

  570. when Paul wrote those words, it wasn't theoretical.

  571. Jesus' followers were being stoned, murdered,

  572. imprisoned, and persecuted. Yet Paul says, if

  573. they are flesh and blood, And even if they're

  574. hurting you, God is for them. God is for those

  575. people. Translation, if your enemy is made of

  576. flesh and blood, they are not your enemy. They

  577. are not your enemy. And I wanted to make this

  578. as real as possible for all of us living in 2026

  579. in the United States of America. I'm going to

  580. flip some images up on the screen. And as you

  581. see these images, see how your heart responds.

  582. Let's look at our first one. The person in that

  583. car driving is not your enemy. Even if they cut

  584. you off and even if they're driving slow in the

  585. left -hand lane, they are not your enemy. The

  586. same person that goes through the express lane

  587. with a cart full of groceries, they are not your

  588. enemy. They're not your enemy. I mean, they're

  589. not thinking clearly, but they're still not your

  590. enemy. To keep it going, HCV, these people are

  591. not your enemies. They're really easy to hate,

  592. but they're still not your enemies. Let's keep

  593. it going. The rich and powerful in our world

  594. are not your enemies. And they're also not your

  595. saviors. But you also have to remember, it's

  596. not just the rich and the powerful. It's the...

  597. It's the politicians. They are not your enemies.

  598. And it's not just them. This group is not your

  599. enemies. They are flesh and blood. But unfortunately,

  600. in our current political culture, there is deep

  601. division and hatred between both. And we can't

  602. allow that deep division and hatred to enter

  603. into our hearts. In the same way, these people

  604. are not. We cannot allow CNN and Fox News to

  605. tell us who we can love and hate. God determines

  606. who we love. Therefore, these people aren't your

  607. enemies. Next slide. Thank you. And if it's not

  608. these people, it's not these people either. Neither

  609. one of them are your enemies. If they are made

  610. of flesh and blood, they are not our enemies.

  611. And we have to stop allowing politics and prejudice

  612. determine who and how we love. And listen. And

  613. listen, if any of those images made you feel

  614. uncomfortable in any way, then the book of Jonah

  615. is for you and me. And God is saying, I am a

  616. God of all humanity and desire that all people

  617. come into a relationship with me. Because we

  618. have to remember Romans 5 .10. For since our

  619. friendship with God was restored by the death

  620. of his son, while we were still his enemies,

  621. we will certainly be saved through the life of

  622. his son. We used to be enemies with God. And

  623. now I'm God's friend. And therefore, we are challenged

  624. to allow our hearts to be friends with all people

  625. throughout the world, which leads us to ponder,

  626. what is God trying to show us through Jonah?

  627. Well, it's one simple truth. Church, we need

  628. to choose to forgive. We need to choose to forgive.

  629. Jonah chapter 4 verse 11, but Nineveh has more

    Jonah 4:11

  630. than 120 ,000 people living in spiritual darkness.

  631. Not to mention all the animals. Should not feel

  632. sorry for such a great city. Now, hear me out.

  633. Many scholars believe that that number that God

  634. is referencing there is the number of innocent

  635. women and children that were alive currently

  636. in Nineveh. Remember, that city had more than

  637. 600 ,000 people, and God is calling Jonah back

  638. to his heart. He's saying, you have to come back

  639. to my heart. Jonah was so angry that he wanted

  640. to die, and God is trying to show him that bitterness

  641. and unforgiveness is literally killing him from

  642. the inside out. And it's been said that holding

  643. on to bitterness and unforgiveness is like lighting

  644. yourself on fire and hoping the smoke annoys

  645. the person next to you. Bitterness and unforgiveness

  646. only hurt you and me. Does it make us any better

  647. to hold on to anger and unforgiveness toward

  648. that parent or spouse? No. It just makes us angry

  649. towards our own children. Is the rage and negativity

  650. toward a coworker or classmate or boss making

  651. us a better person? No. It's just making us not

  652. good at our job. So what I want to do for you

  653. is I want to give you a simple example. Many

  654. of you were giving a Sour Patch Kid on the way

  655. in. Please open up your pack right now. If you

  656. did not get one, there's like six Sour Patch

  657. Kids in that pack. Give it to your neighbor,

  658. okay? Because Chris made a foolish mistake of

  659. purchasing Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish.

  660. The Swedish Fish, unfortunately, aren't sour,

  661. so I just need the Sour Patch Kids. So if you

  662. have one, put it in your hand now. And what I

  663. want you to do is, if you're able, I want you

  664. to put a Sour Patch Kid in your mouth and look

  665. at your neighbor's reaction to the sour. Ready,

  666. set, go. Okay, you see where I'm going with this.

  667. Okay. Typically, I get it, work with me. Typically,

  668. when we put something sour in our mouth, our

  669. face suddenly turns, like, what was that? And

  670. our initial reaction when we put sour in our

  671. mouth is to spit it out. Now, unfortunately,

  672. with candy, it turns sweet, so it doesn't quite

  673. fit the example. But we want to spit something

  674. out of our mouth that's sour. Why is it when

  675. it comes to bitterness and unforgiveness in our

  676. hearts, we want to hold on to it and stew over

  677. it and stew over it and stew over it to make

  678. ourselves more angry and upset? Because it's

  679. a choice that we want to heap negativity on the

  680. person that hurt us. When in reality, God is

  681. challenging us to let go of bitterness and unforgiveness.

  682. Matthew 6. If you forgive those who sin against

  683. you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But

  684. if you refuse to forgive others, notice, your

  685. heavenly Father will not forgive your sins. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  686. chapter 4 tells us, church, get rid of all bitterness,

  687. rage, anger, harsh words, slander. as well as

  688. all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind

  689. to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,

  690. just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

  691. And the best way, church, to move past bitterness

  692. and unforgiveness is to release it to God. And

  693. that's why I'm skipping next week and moving

  694. communion to this week. Because see, for many

  695. of us, we think that communion is just something

  696. we do at church. When in reality, Jesus left

  697. this as an ordinance to the church. And an ordinance

  698. means something that we should do regularly to

  699. remember what God did for us. The bread represents

  700. Jesus' broken body on the cross. The juice represents

  701. his shed blood for what? The forgiveness of our

  702. sins. And the Bible very clearly tells us that

  703. before you take communion, before you drink the

  704. juice, search your heart. So what he tells us

  705. to do, he says, look in the mirror and if there's

  706. any unforgiveness or bitterness or anger or rage

  707. in your heart, towards anyone, towards a parent,

  708. a spouse, a son, a daughter, a group of people,

  709. whatever it may be, that we're to lay that down

  710. before we drink that juice because we just learned

  711. what Jesus said to us. Our Father in heaven can't

  712. forgive us until we've what? Forgiven others.

  713. In other words, get rid of the roof that you're

  714. putting over yourself and open up your connection

  715. with God. Will you stand with me? So before we

  716. take communion, I want to share a little instructions

  717. with you. We're going to share in the bread together

  718. and celebrate God's broken body, Jesus' broken

  719. body on the cross. But before we drink the juice

  720. together, I want to pray a simple prayer giving

  721. you an opportunity to lay down any unforgiveness

  722. and bitterness in your heart. And I want to encourage

  723. you. You may have been holding on to it for years

  724. and this is your opportunity to leave this place

  725. free. Stop making excuses. Stop putting it off.

  726. Lay it down. Let God have it so that you can

  727. live and walk in abundance. This can be an incredible

  728. celebratory day for many of you. But again, it's

  729. a choice. God desires that we choose to forgive.

  730. On the night that he was betrayed, Jesus took

  731. bread, broke it, gave it to his disciples and

  732. said, take, eat, this is my body, which is broken

  733. for you. Do it in remembrance of me. Let's remember

  734. Jesus on the cross. Likewise, after supper, Jesus

  735. took the cup of wine, said, this is my blood,

  736. which is shed for you and for many. For the forgiveness

  737. of sin, shrink it often. And when you do, do

  738. it in remembrance of me. Let's pray together,

  739. church. Holy Spirit, come. Search our hearts.

  740. If there's any unforgiveness, bitterness, anger,

  741. rage, reveal it now in Jesus' name. And now say,

  742. I choose as an act of my will to forgive. Lay

  743. it down. Lay it down. Lay them down. Lay them

  744. down. Let's drink. God, we are grateful for freedom.

  745. We celebrate the ability to extend forgiveness

  746. and grace and mercy to others. Allow for us to

  747. see in Jonah ourselves, but more importantly,

  748. to change and not live like Jonah, but live like

  749. your son, Jesus. And we're grateful for all you

  750. do. In Jesus' name, amen. Now, there are several

  751. words of knowledge. Hold on, we're not done.

  752. That I wanna share with you before we go, and

  753. then we're gonna pray a simple prayer. Our prayer

  754. team will be on my left and my right for any

  755. of these issues. If these are you, believe that

  756. God wants to work a miracle in your life. You

  757. have confusion in your mind about a decision

  758. that's leading to anxiety. You have right hip

  759. pain. You have muscle spasm in your right leg.

  760. You have left inner ear pain. You have pain radiating

  761. from your lower back to the base of your neck.

  762. You have forgiveness and bitterness issues that

  763. you need to lay down. So if any of those are

  764. you, our prayer team will be here to pray with

  765. you or any other need that you may have. And

  766. now like we always do as a community of faith,

  767. we're gonna pray a simple prayer. And for some

  768. of you, when I was talking about professing Jesus

  769. with your mouth, but not living like him, this

  770. prayer is for you. It's all about the relationship.

  771. It's all about putting him first and prioritizing

  772. making Jesus Lord of your life. And if you've

  773. never made that decision, this decision is for

  774. you also. And we'll all pray together. Let's

  775. pray. Jesus, I'm broken. I'm full of doubt, shame,

  776. regret, sin. Change me. Forgive me. I believe.

  777. You're God's son. I believe you died for me.

  778. I believe you're alive today. Make me new. Set

  779. me free. Fill me with your spirit. Help me, God,

  780. to serve others. In Jesus' name, amen. So listen,

  781. if you prayed that prayer, see me, hug me, see

  782. Rudy. We're gonna give you some next steps. We're

  783. gonna get you baptized. We want to lead you into

  784. a relationship with Jesus. Next week for May,

  785. we kick off text to talk, and we're going to

  786. be focusing on reading the Bible and prayer so

  787. that our relationship with Jesus can grow and

  788. flourish. It's going to be a great month of growing

  789. closer to God. God bless you guys. I'm going

  790. there to say goodbye to everyone. Have a great

  791. week. Cut off my lifetime I was stuck up in that

  792. grind Not knowing you gave your life for mine

  793. You don't wanna turn water into wine Please fix

  794. my heart and the things inside
