Exploring the Depths of Psalm 8: A Messianic Perspective

And hopefully he's able physically to be here and make it

next week.

If not, we will be in Joshua again.

One more message out of the Book of Joshua and then we'll be

done, which is sad.

I've enjoyed the Book of Joshua.

Psalm 8 is one of my favorite psalms.

It is a psalm of David.

It is a song.

Remember that.

Now, the book of Psalms is a book of songs.

It's Israel's songbook.

And this particular Psalm, Psalm 8 is a messianic psalm.

It is speaking and prophesying concerning the Messiah who would

come one day.

Now the Messiah has already come.

Jesus Christ came 2,000 years ago.

And we are approaching the Christmas season, even though some

of you have already put up Christmas lights, which is against

the rules.

There are rules in place.

That's supposed to be it.

Thanks.

You'll notice our church hasn't put up any Christmas stuff

yet.

And that's because I'm just a hard.

No, I don't know.

Anyway, I'll stop.

Because some of you.

You're saying, well, he just doesn't love Jesus and.

No, no, I haven't commercialized Christmas in any way.

Oh.

Anyway, we go back.

I'm being sarcastic, and sometimes sarcasm will come back

to bite you.

But this psalm does speak about Jesus Christ.

It's a Masonic psalm.

It's speaking about him coming, and especially here, speaking

about him reigning.

Him reigning.

One day he will be king.

And they just.

The choir just helped me out with the message this morning.

Psalm of David.

A wonderful messianic psalm.

Let's look at it.

Verse 1.

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the

earth.

Who has set thy glory above the heavens?

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength

because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and

the avenger.

When I consider thy heavens, just think about David.

Maybe.

I know.

We know he was a shepherd.

Maybe he's under a tree, he's looking over his sheep.

He's looking at the stars in the heavens.

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon

and the stars which thou hast ordained.

What is man that thou art mindful of him or the Son of Man?

That word Son of Man there is particularly speaking about dust

frail, the Son of Man that thou visitest him.

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels and

has crowned him with glory and honor.

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands.

Thou hast put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, yea,

and the beasts of the field, and the fowl of the air, and the

fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths

of the sea.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth.

Let's pray.

Heavenly Father, Lord, we love you.

And Lord, we do thank you for sending your son, Jesus Christ in

this world, making him a little lower than the angels, him

humbling himself in order that he might die on the cross for us,

that we might have eternal life.

But Lord, we know one day he will rule and reign.

Lord, we're looking forward to that day.

We're looking forward to the blessed hope, looking forward to

his appearing in Jesus name.

Amen.

In Psalm 2, we have man's rebellion against God.

And in Psalm 8 we have again the ultimate that ultimately man

will control the earth.

And by that means the God man, Jesus Christ.

This psalm possibly was written by David after he had killed

Goliath.

That's kind of what the Jewish historians have marked down.

Commentators have said this particular psalm is mentioned in

the New Testament several times.

At least four Matthew 21, which we'll talk about that in a

moment.

And Hebrews two.

Those two we will go over, but also First Corinthians 15 in Ephesians,

chapter one.

Remember, I always like to point out when we talk about an Old

Testament scripture being found in the New Testament that the

New Testament writers wrote.

In light of that, you already know your Old Testament.

And though we are New Testament saints, we must understand

that the New Testament is built upon the foundation of the

Old Testament.

If you truly want to understand the New Testament, you

must understand and read the Old Testament.

And again, it's just like building a house.

You put a foundation down first.

The foundation is so, so important to the rest of the structure.

If your foundation isn't right, the rest of the structure

is not going to be right.

And so that's the same thing.

The interpretations of the New Testament doctrines come into play

and are very important that we get it right.

And the way we get it right is by having a good foundation and knowing

our Old Testament.

Again, one more time, the New Testament writers wrote, in light

of that, you already know your Old Testament.

So this particular Psalm is found four times in the New Testament.

In Psalm 8, we have the importance of man by way of God's

special creation of him.

And we'll cover that in a moment.

In Genesis chapter one, verse 26, we have that God placed Adam

into the garden to have dominion over the earth, dominion

over the animals, But Adam sinned through his selfishness.

He took of the tree.

He was not deceived like Eve, but he took of it willfully and thus

plunged all of us into sin.

We are all selfish by nature because of Adam's sin.

As is written, there's none righteous.

No, not one.

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

And so though Adam was put in creation and made distinct above

all other of the creation, he fell into sin.

So this psalm, though it's talking about man, is in view of

talking about Jesus Christ.

So as you read it, you go, okay, that applies to man, mankind,

but ultimately it applies to Jesus Christ, who will rule and reign

over the whole earth, who will have dominion over the whole earth.

Amen.

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands.

Thou hast put all things under his feet.

Does mankind have all things under his feet?

This side?

Mankind?

No.

Will Jesus Christ have all things?

Yes, all things under his feet.

So you can.

This psalm has two applications.

One to mankind, and then one, of course, to Jesus Christ.

Ultimately, it's talking about Jesus Christ.

It's a messianic song speaking of the future Messiah and now the

Messiah that's already come.

So we see these two things, understanding that Jesus Christ is

perfect man.

Jesus Christ came to this earth and lived a life without sin.

He was the perfect man and ultimately will be king.

So let's get into this.

We preached on this particular psalm before.

Again, one of my favorite psalms.

Look at verse one.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth.

That word excellent means incomparable, nothing like Him.

He is Jehovah, L O R D. He is Lord, capital L O R D. He is Lord.

He is the self existent one.

He is wholly other.

That means he's transcendent.

There's no one like him.

And to ultimately understand who he is, we're incapable of it.

Now, I'm thankful that God wants us to know him, or else he

wouldn't have given us the wonderful scriptures.

Right?

In fact, his desire is that we know him more and more.

But to know him perfectly, to know him to the nth degree that it

can't happen.

Because our finite minds cannot understand an incomprehensible

God, an infinite God.

He is again wholly other.

And it says, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth.

And right now we know that that's not true.

His Name isn't excellent throughout the whole earth.

His Name isn't proclaimed throughout the whole earth.

In fact, many times it's profane.

In fact, the majority of the time it's profane.

Someone even recently, as of yesterday, I heard somebody take

the Lord's name in vain.

And I'm going, really?

You choose that word?

You choose that word or that phrase.

God's name is profane.

And it's also being systematically deleted from our society.

It's crazy, isn't it, that bringing up the name of God, especially

bringing up the name Jesus Christ is frowned upon in the political

realm in schools many times.

And I'm thankful for some conservative school systems around

here, but there are multiple majority of school systems around

the country that you being a Jesus follower will not go well.

Some courtrooms now and some even in Congress who won't take the

oath upon a Bible and proclaim the their allegiance to God.

It's crazy, isn't it?

Y' all wake up.

It's crazy, isn't it?

His name isn't proclaimed throughout the whole earth, but one

day it will be.

One day it will be.

How excellent is thy name.

That word again, excellent, it means.

Again it says, look at again there it says, how excellent is thy

name in all the earth.

Who has set thy glory above the heavens Fixed or set above the

heavens, above the sun, the moon and the stars?

Again, one day he will.

His name will be proclaimed.

It will be honored.

And I love Philippians, chapter two.

What a chapter.

Paul says, hey, look on every man's things, not your own self.

In other words, don't be selfish.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

We ought to, we ought to be selfless.

And then he gives examples of that.

He talks about Jesus who humbled himself and became a servant

and humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death

of the cross.

He says, follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Here's how Jesus lived his life.

Humbly as a servant.

Therefore, Paul said Philippians chapter 2.

Philippians 2 · chapter mention

He has been given a name which is above every name, that at the

name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess

of things in heaven, of things in earth and things under the earth,

that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Every knee one day will bow.

Every Jew one day will bow to Jesus Christ.

They will accept him as the Messiah one day.

Every Buddhist will bow.

One day every Muslim will bow to Jesus Christ.

Every.

Every.

I can go through the list.

Everyone will bow.

Every atheist will bow to Jesus Christ.

Every communist will bow to Jesus Christ.

If you think atheism and communism don't go together, you

got something wrong with you?

Every Hindu will bow.

Every Satanist will bow.

Paul said, every knee shall bow that Jesus Christ is Lord.

He's boss.

To the glory of God the Father.

Everyone, all of us will humble ourselves before him.

How excellent is thy name in all the earth who has set thy glory

above the heavens.

Out of the mouth of babes.

We talked about this a few weeks ago.

It's amazing what children will say.

Sometimes children can say things that are profound, and you

go, where in the world did that child come up with that?

Amen.

Your child ever done that?

Maybe your grandkids are better at it than anybody.

Moses, who was saved by his parents and put there in the river.

And I don't have time to go through the whole story, but.

And there's a little child, a little baby cried.

And Pharaoh's daughter picked him up out of that of that river

and raised him.

That little baby Moses.

That little child Moses.

Not Syria, not Babylon, not some other great country.

It was Moses who defeated Egypt.

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings has thou ordained strength

because of thine enemies.

Again, it's amazing to me how to the mouth of babes, so many things

happen or so many things are said.

But it was Moses who humbled Egypt.

First Corinthians 1:27 says, and God hath chosen the weak things

1 Corinthians 1:27

of this world to confound the things that are mighty.

I want to remind every teacher, you don't know who you're

teaching.

You don't know what.

What that child will become.

Amen.

You may be.

You may be teaching the next DL Moody, and whatever the case is,

understanding that again, that they might steal the enemy and the

avenger.

That avenger there, Satan.

Can I remind you that Satan's a roaring lion seeking who may devour

that Satan is a deceiver and a liar.

He's a conniver.

He's the one trying to get you.

He's the one who's trying to take you down.

He's the one that's trying to destroy you.

You say, well, you talking about the boogeyman under the bed?

No, I'm talking about Satan, not the boogeyman.

Satan is real, and he doesn't like that you're trying to raise

your family right.

He doesn't like that you're trying to have a marriage that's

ideal and according to the Bible.

He doesn't like that you go to church.

He doesn't like any of those.

He doesn't like those things.

And he is fighting against that he is the avenger.

Jesus said in Mark 10:14, suffer the little children to come

unto me.

In Matthew 21:16 you have the reference of Psalm 8 that is referenced

Matthew 21:16

by Jesus Christ himself.

Jesus Christ comes into Jerusalem.

There, just a few days before he's about to be crucified.

He's riding on a donkey.

And as he approaches, and as he approaches Jerusalem, in the gates

of the city, adults get out in front of him and began to lay palm

tree leaves in front of his donkey and began to cry out, hosanna,

King.

Hosanna the king.

Hosanna the king.

And of course that was according to prophecy.

Hosanna to the son of David.

He entered Jerusalem as a king, or at least they cried out

to him as a king.

But when he enters the temple, he does a few things that the Pharisees

don't like.

He turns over the money, changers tables and he causes a big

stir.

And what happens is the children come in and they begin to

say Hosanna to the Son of David.

They began.

The children began to cry out.

And the Pharisees say to Jesus, hey, hey, hey, hey.

Do you need to stop them from saying that?

You need to get them to stop saying that.

And Jesus said, hey, if they stop, the rocks start saying it,

the rocks will start crying out.

And amazing.

And he quotes Psalm 8 out of the mouth of babes and sucklings.

He didn't finish the whole thought, but the Pharisees knew the

scripture.

Think maybe he was calling them the Avenger?

Yeah, not the Avenger like in the comics.

Avenger like isn't the enemy not steal the avenger and the enemy.

The Pharisees knew exactly what he was quoting and what he was

saying.

I just love it.

Jesus had no problem confronting the Pharisees, but big

things come in small packages.

And truth from the lips of a child so many times is so illustrative

or so transparent, it's amazing.

David in verse three talks about the wonderful universe that

God's created.

He said, when I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,

the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained, remind you this

morning that God created it all.

That the Son is a circuit riding preacher reminding us there

is a Creator, God created it all.

And David was in a wonder about it.

What a marvel creation truly is.

And we know from scripture, the New Testament, that Jesus Christ

is the primary agent of the Godhead creation.

In other words, John 1 says, in the beginning was the Word, and

the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Same was in the beginning with God speaking of Jesus Christ.

And all things were made by him, Jesus Christ.

And without him was not anything made that was made.

And we could go to Hebrews chapter one and we could go to many

other New Testament scriptures that point out that Jesus Christ

was active in creation.

In fact, he was the primary activity agent of the three.

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

It was Jesus Christ who's the primary agent of the Godhead, who

created all things.

I believe that it was Jesus Christ's voice you would have heard,

let there be light.

I believe that God created all things, created everything and set

them in order.

David was in awe about it.

And if David was in awe about creation, we ought to be even more

in awe about creation because we have more information.

In fact, we have much more information than David had.

Isn't that amazing?

God created all things in six days, six 24 hour days.

There is no gap theory, there is no day age theory, all those heretical

in nature, not according to the scripture.

God created all.

Well, you're one of those early earth people.

I'm early Earth because the Bible is.

And there's just as much evidence of an early earth as there

is an old.

As I've said many, many times from the pulpit, takes more faith

to believe in evolution than it does to believe in creation by

a savior, by God.

You see, the evolutionists believe in eternal matter.

That little speck of dust or that little speck of dust is as little,

the science book used to say, as little as the period at the end

of the sentence on this page, 4 billion years ago.

Now it's like there are so many different theories about when,

how long ago it was 4 billion, 5 billion, 6 billion, whatever it

may be.

But can I tell you that evolution and creation by a heavenly

father do not, do not mix.

God created it all.

You either believe in eternal matter or you believe in the eternal

master.

You either believe that God created all or gu did.

It's either God or goofy.

It really is.

I know that's very simplistic, but it really is.

It comes down to that.

And I just believe the Bible.

I just believe God created it all.

If there is a design, there has to be a designer.

And I know the chief architect of the universe, the word ordained

there means set or placed to, to put in order.

John Wesley, who started the Methodist movement, he said this.

He said God created the heavens and the earth and didn't

even half try.

I would say to you that God created the heavens the earth and

exerted no power.

In other words, he exerted power, but he didn't use up any of

the power he has.

God cannot.

He's as powerful as he has ever been.

What a God we serve.

What a powerful God who created all things.

And then verse four, he companioned us.

He's mindful of us.

He remembers us.

What is man that thou art mindful of him?

In light of creation, in light of the sun, moon and stars, in light

of the vast universe of millions of universes and trillions

of galaxies and all the things that.

It's amazing, the space that never ends.

What is man that thou art mindful of him?

David said, or the Son of Man without visiteth him.

Why would you remember us?

Why would you consider us?

Why would you think about us?

David said, us.

Mortal man, frail man, weak man, frail mankind.

But God is mindful of our weaknesses.

And God sent His Son into this world.

Not to condemn the world, but to the world through him might be

saved.

God gave his only Son in order that we might have eternal life.

That's the God of the universe.

That's the God who created all things.

When Adam fell, it was the Son of Man who came.

Can I remind you there's a man sitting at the right hand of the

throne of God, The God man.

Imagine, there's a representative of the human race

sitting at the right hand of the throne of God.

He's the God, man.

Just as much God as though he'd never been man.

Just as much man as though he'd never been God.

He's the God man.

He visits us.

He cares for us.

He attends to us.

That est at the end means continually.

He didn't just create all things and wind it up like a clock

and throw it into space, never to return and never to look upon

his creation.

No, he says he visits us.

Continually visits us.

He cares for you.

He's not very far from you.

As the song said just a moment ago, he's ever with us.

What a mighty God.

Jesus Christ left heaven, humbled himself, as I said before,

he made himself a man, humbled himself and became obedient unto

death, even the death of the cross.

He became flesh and dwelt among us, the Bible says, and we

beheld his glory, the glorious of the only begotten, the Father,

full of grace and truth.

He that is God became flesh.

The One who created all things became part of his creation.

The Creator became part of his creation.

What a loving, wonderful, caring God who willingly gave himself,

who willingly gave his life.

For us who willingly took the penalty of sin.

For us who willingly took the sin of all mankind upon himself,

went to the cross and died the death that I should have died.

He paid the price for sin that I should have paid for my own sin,

but he paid it for me.

He died in my place.

The sinless Savior, the sinless Creator of all things, the

Creator died for his creation.

That's the loving God we serve.

That's the loving God that lives in my heart.

That's the loving God that abides within me.

So thankful for the caring and loving God that we serve.

And that's what confounded David.

It's like I don't understand God.

Why in light of this vast creation, would you care for me?

Why, in light of the vast creation, would you acknowledge me

and visit us?

Then in verses 5 through 8, he speaks about the crowning us with

glory and honor.

Thou made him a little lower than the angels.

Can I remind you that God placed man and God created man as

and to have dominion over his creation.

Didn't make him a little lower than the beasts.

Mankind is not an efficient animal.

Mankind are not animals at all.

We are not animals.

We've been placed over the animals, above the animals.

Amen.

Listen, we've got some weirdos out there, and it's a crazy time

in which we live, and we need to be careful.

I mentioned this book before.

I'll mention it again.

It's Climate Change by the Answers in Genesis Group, the Ken

Ham Group.

It's a little pamphlet.

We have some, I think, in the bookstore.

If you would like to read about that climate change very, very

easily, you will find that America is being lied to by the left.

I mean, and again, it's not creation scientists who've said that.

It's real science, you know, not real scientists.

That's terrible.

It's secular.

Secular scientists.

Go back and read.

History tells us in the 11 and 1200s, the Earth was hotter than

it is today.

Very easily can be proven.

It has been proven.

And all you got to do is go read.

Just do some reading on your own.

I'm talking about historical facts, not somebody's opinion.

It's historically factual that the Earth was hotter in the 1200s,

1300s than it is today.

That's not an opinion.

So what does that say to you?

Somebody's lying to America.

Why?

For their own gain.

Amen.

I have no problem saying that from the pulpit and online.

Lying to America.

That's not a Republican thing.

That's not a Democrat thing.

That's A bad thing.

Why?

Why?

We say, well, why would they do that?

They worship the creature more than the Creator.

That's where we're at.

We are in the last days.

Romans tells us.

Timothy tells us, in the last days, they'll worship the creature

more than the Creator.

That's where we're at.

We have those in political positions who are a worshiper of

the planet.

And yes, Preacher, you saying we should just do whatever we want.

No, I've said this many times, too, that the days of changing the

oil in your car and going out in the back and pouring that oil

in your backyard, those are over.

You know, we've learned a few things.

Hello.

We have.

I mean, don't do that.

Don't do that.

We did that when I was a kid.

We lived out in the country, thought nothing about it.

You know, there's proper places to dispose of stuff and there's

things we know we shouldn't do.

Now we've learned.

Everybody with me?

We should take care of the creation that God gave us.

We should be good stewards of the creation that God gave us.

But don't jump off the cliff into some muck and mire and worship

the creature more than the Creator.

Be careful.

God has put mankind to have dominion over the animals.

That's why PETA really stands for people Eating Tasty animals.

And no owl and no fish should take somebody's job.

We're living in the last days.

Turn to one scripture with me and we'll be done.

Hebrews, and that's kind of a hard book to find in the New Testament,

so just look until you find it.

Hebrews, Chapter two.

Let's keep on.

If you find Timothy, you're getting close.

Hebrews Chapter two.

I do encourage you to get that answers in Genesis booklet on climate

change.

And it's a booklet, so don't take that much time to read it.

It'll be a blessing to you.

We ought to be good stewards of what God's given us.

But not wackos.

That's what I have in my notes.

But not wackos.

Hebrews, chapter 2, verse 6.

Hebrews 2:6

But one in a certain place testified, saying, what is man, that

thou art mindful of him, or the Son of man, that thou visitest

him?

Thou madest him a little lower than the angels.

Thou crownedst him with glory and honor, and did set him over the

works of thy hands.

Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet, for in

that he put all in subjection under him.

He left nothing.

That is not under him.

But now we see not yet all things put under him talking about

Jesus.

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for

the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor that

he, by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Aren't you glad of that?

He died forever man, for it became him for whom are all things

and by whom all things are all things, in bringing many sons into

glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through suffering.

And we could go on and on, but Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfillment

of Psalm 8.

And one day he'll ultimately fulfill the rest of the scripture.

One day every knee will bow.

One day every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

to the glory of God the Father.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth May

we, verse nine, proclaim his name.

May we as Christians let the whole earth know the good news that

Jesus Christ came 2,000 years ago, that he lived, he died, he rose

again.

In order that we might have eternal life, in order that our sins

might be forgiven, May we proclaim the good news.

David said, lord, why are you mindful of us?

Why do you think about us?

What is man that thou art mindful of him, the Son of man, that

thou visiteth him?

The Queen of England this is back in World War II, was a teenager

at the outbreak of World War II.

And soon as she was old enough, she asked her father, King

George vi to allow her to join the armed forces and serve and to

serve as Brit.

Sorry, to serve Britain as others were doing.

Her father finally allowed her to join the Auxiliary Territorial

Service as a private, the lowest rank.

She had a superior officer who would take pleasure in bossing her

and bullying her around.

It was Private Windsor do this and Private Windsor do that.

And she would reply, yes Sergeant, Yes Sergeant.

She was made a little lower than the non commissioned officer

for the sake of her service to her people.

But then on February 6th, 1952 she received word that her father

was dead.

From the moment on she was Queen of England.

She was no longer Private Windsor to be battered or badgered

by a small minded non commissioned officer.

But she was Her Royal Highness, Her Royal Majesty, Queen

Elizabeth ii.

She had entered into a position for which she had been born,

a position resigned temporarily for the call of duty.

But never again did the sergeant address her as Private Windsor.

Can I tell you?

Jesus Christ left the heavens, left the portals of glory, laid aside

his glory.

He who was rich became poor, that he might suffer for us, that

he may Die for us.

He might shed his blood for us.

I'm thankful he rose again, aren't you?

But one day he's coming again and the next time he comes, he won't

die for us.

The next time he comes, he won't shed his blood for us.

Next time he comes, he won't come as a lowly servant.

The next time he comes, there'll be blood upon his vesture,

but it won't be his blood.

He'll be trading out the grapes of wrath as he defeats the

enemy, as he defeats the avenger.

And he will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords forever and

ever and ever and ever.

That is our blessed hope.

He will return.

Let's all stand.

I have a verse invitation.

This morning.

I think about the song how great thou art, O Lord our God.

When I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands

have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power

throughout the universe displayed and when I think that God

his Son not sparing sent him to die I scarce can take it in that

on the cross my burden he gladly bearing he bled and died to

take away my sin.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me

home what joy shall fill my heart?

Then I shall bow and humble every knee, Bow every tongue shall

confess humble adoration and there proclaim my God who How great

thou art.

What a mighty God we serve.

Heavenly Father, we thank you Lord, for your love for us, in sending

your Son for us that we might have eternal life.

Lord, we thank you that you are mindful of your creation, that

you love us and you care for us.

Lord, I thank you that you have given your son's life for me.

And Lord, we're in awe of what you've done.

We're all in awe of the creation that you have created for

us to enjoy.

Lord.

May we never take that for granted.

And Lord, we're looking forward to the day of your return.
