  1. then go to Hebrews chapter 4. We're

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  2. going to begin a new series tonight

  3. through the book of Hebrews. And it felt

  4. for a long time uh that this is the

  5. direction the Lord would take us in our

  6. midweek as we've gone through Genesis,

  7. Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. Now,

  8. we've studied much about the Old

  9. Testament, the Old Covenant, the

  10. sacrifices, and all of those things. And

  11. um Hebrews will show us that Christ is

  12. the complete fulfillment of all of those

  13. things. And so I think it's going to be

  14. a very helpful study on the heels of

  15. being in these uh books about the

  16. priesthood and the law. But I also want

  17. you to understand that there's a purpose

  18. to this book that's very significant to

  19. your life. And I I have been excited for

  20. the last several months to get into this

  21. study. and and I'm so excited for it.

  22. Well, as we begin a new series, we're

  23. not starting in chapter 1, verse one, uh

  24. because what I want to do tonight is to

  25. give us really an introductory

  26. uh message about what the entire book is

  27. about because it will really help set

  28. the direction for every text that we

  29. study if we realize the overall aim of

  30. the book. And so, that's what we're

  31. going to do tonight. And I think that

  32. chapter 4:14

  33. is going to give us a very succinct

  34. summary of what that purpose is. Have

  35. your Bibles ready tonight because we are

  36. going to flip a lot through the book of

  37. Hebrews because I want you to understand

  38. that what we preach here does not just

  39. come from the mind of your pastor, but

  40. it comes from the scripture. And so I

  41. encourage you to have your Bible each

  42. service and to read along and study

  43. along as we go. So let's read in Hebrews

    Hebrews 4:14

  44. chapter 4 verse 14.

  45. It says, "Seeing then that we have a

  46. great high priest that is passed into

  47. the heavens, Jesus the son of God. Let

  48. us hold fast our profession." Let us

  49. hold fast our profession. And so the

  50. title of this first message and of our

  51. entire series is hold fast to God's son.

  52. Hold fast to God's son. You may remember

  53. on June 24th that two massive

  54. earthquakes rocked the foundation of two

  55. cities in Venezuela. I remember the

  56. videos went viral online and was uh

  57. looking through and seeing that there

  58. are crowds in the streets that are just

  59. scrambling as as skyscrapers and

  60. apartments are rocking back and forth.

  61. And there were videos of people in

  62. underground garage and the dust is going

  63. and everybody's ducking and they're

  64. trying to find something to get a hold

  65. of and and as they're, you know,

  66. stumbling around, they're about to fall

  67. over. And there were videos of people

  68. that were swimming in their their pools

  69. and the waves are just going back and

  70. forth and they're trying to get out of

  71. the middle of the pool and get to the

  72. edge. And what you notice is that when

  73. the foundations of the earth are shaking

  74. back and forth, you're either going to

  75. grab a hold of something that's solid

  76. and sure or you're going to stumble and

  77. fall. Can I ask you when it comes to

  78. your life? What do you hold on to when

  79. life gets rocky?

  80. What do you hold on to when your world

  81. gets shaken? When danger is imminent?

  82. When doubt sets in and fear overwhelms

  83. you? What do you hold on to to find

  84. security and stability?

  85. Well, let's think about it for a moment.

  86. When the economy gets shaky,

  87. what are some things I'm going to be a

  88. little more interactive here tonight.

  89. What are some things that you cling to

  90. when your finances are going bad? What

  91. do you look to for security, for shelter

  92. and stability?

  93. [snorts]

  94. Your parents. Yeah. If your if your

  95. parents got money and you're out, you

  96. ask them, right? What else?

  97. Door Dash. Yeah. Get another job. Add on

  98. to that. What else?

  99. Prayer. Yeah, that's a good place to

  100. turn.

  101. People might turn to their 401k,

  102. withdraw a little bit early there, or

  103. look to that and just say, "Man,

  104. everything's falling apart. I've got to

  105. withdraw my 401k, invested in something

  106. else." And you start scrambling in that

  107. way. When marriage gets rocky and you're

  108. struggling, you might turn to a friend.

  109. You might turn to a confidant or there

  110. might be a need that to go to a

  111. therapist or something like that. When

  112. the uh world around you is in chaos,

  113. when your country is in decline, and

  114. when your state seems to be falling

  115. apart, what do you look to to be the

  116. hope to get things turned around?

  117. [snorts]

  118. What do we look to?

  119. November,

  120. right? Let's have another election.

  121. Let's try to get somebody else in

  122. office. Let's try to impeach or get them

  123. out of office. And so we can look to

  124. politicians to try to turn things around

  125. when our entire system gets uh shaky.

  126. What about when your faith gets shaky?

  127. [snorts] What about when the world rises

  128. against your faith? You might retreat to

  129. the safety of silence. just be quiet

  130. about your faith. Just go silent.

  131. Or what about when the word of God

  132. confronts you with something different

  133. than you always thought? That you always

  134. believed one thing, but then you come to

  135. study the scripture on your own and

  136. you're you're thinking, did I have that

  137. right or is there something else that

  138. God is saying in this text? Sometimes

  139. that can be shaky in your life and

  140. you're wondering is what I've always

  141. believed is it still true?

  142. Or when churches change or when core

  143. doctrines of the Bible are forsaken and

  144. online influencers are gaining massive

  145. followings that seem to be leading

  146. others astray. And sometimes you can be

  147. concerned that you'll be sucked up into

  148. something that isn't true, something

  149. that deviates from God's word.

  150. See, it's in those moments that we seek

  151. shelter,

  152. safety, and stability.

  153. But I want to challenge you tonight that

  154. you want to be sure that what you're

  155. holding on to is not something that is

  156. flimsy, something that is fragile, or

  157. something brittle, but rather that what

  158. you are holding on to, what you are

  159. clinging to is something that is a

  160. solid, sure foundation.

  161. one that can truly give you the

  162. stability and security that you're

  163. looking for. The author of Hebrews would

  164. like to tell you that what you need to

  165. grab on to, what you need to cling to,

  166. what you need to uh hold fast to is the

  167. son of God, Jesus Christ.

  168. [snorts] See, Hebrews, we're going to

  169. see is much more than a letter. As we

  170. look at the New Testament epistles,

  171. that's what the word epistle is, is it's

  172. a formal letter written by one author to

  173. a particular audience or group of

  174. people. But what we're going to find is

  175. that Hebrews is much more than a letter.

  176. It's really a sermon. It's a sermon.

  177. It's a sermon written to a certain group

  178. of people whose faith was on shaky

  179. ground. And at the end of his letter, he

  180. called them to bear with his word of

  181. exhortation.

  182. The word exhortation, it it means to to

  183. coach up. It means to to strengthen, to

  184. shore up or to uh to encourage.

  185. And so what it means is that this letter

  186. was written as a sermon to encourage

  187. these Christians in their faith in

  188. Christ.

  189. This is a written sermon meant to be

  190. read aloud is what you can tell from it.

  191. And what it does is it carefully uses

  192. Old Testament scripture to make

  193. arguments about Jesus Christ. And all

  194. along the way it's giving applications

  195. to those arguments. What we must do with

  196. what we've learned and what we must do

  197. according to the author of Hebrews is to

  198. hold fast to Jesus Christ to cling to

  199. him when life gets shaky. Thus, the

  200. title of our series is hold fast to

  201. God's son.

  202. The author argues here that every

  203. believer

  204. must hold fast when life gets shaky. And

  205. my prayer during this series on Thursday

  206. nights is really twofold. Number one is

  207. that you would come to know and value

  208. Jesus more than ever before.

  209. This book teaches us more about the

  210. person and ministry of Jesus Christ than

  211. any other book of the Bible. It is all

  212. about Jesus.

  213. But then number two is that knowing him

  214. more

  215. when when your life goes into turmoil

  216. that you would cling wholeheartedly to

  217. Jesus. That's our goal in this

  218. particular series. And so in this

  219. introductory message, I want to give you

  220. what I believe is the sermon of Hebrews

  221. in one sentence, but we're going to

  222. unfold it in three movements. First,

  223. we're going to consider this call to

  224. hold fast to God's son. And then we're

  225. going to see two reasons why you should

  226. do that. And these are coming directly

  227. from this letter to the Hebrews. And so

  228. let's first consider the fact that

  229. Hebrews is a call to hold fast to the

  230. son of God. To best understand this

  231. letter, we need to understand why the

  232. original audience needed to hold fast to

  233. Jesus. Let's just consider this as you

  234. go into a new book. Who is the author of

  235. Hebrews? Now, in my Bible, and and yours

  236. may say this as well. In my Bible, if I

  237. go back to the beginning, it says the

  238. epistle of Paul, the Apostle to the

  239. Hebrews, there's one problem with that.

  240. Paul doesn't identify himself in this

  241. letter like he does in every other

  242. letter that he wrote. And so, early

  243. tradition came to accept that the author

  244. was Paul. But what you find in in

  245. chapter 2 and verse two is that the

  246. author claims that they had heard that

  247. himself included had heard about Jesus

  248. from those who heard him. The apostle

  249. Paul and all the other apostles heard

  250. directly from Jesus. And so that pretty

  251. much eliminates anyone who had personal

  252. encounter with Jesus, including Paul

  253. himself. And so the answer that we're

  254. going to take is rather simple. We don't

  255. know who the author is cuz he never

  256. identifies himself.

  257. And the reality is there can be all

  258. kinds of discussion about it. But it

  259. really doesn't matter because if it did,

  260. the Holy Spirit would have inspired him

  261. to identify himself.

  262. And so what we can gather about this

  263. author though is number one, he had a

  264. masterful understanding of the Old

  265. Testament scriptures. Masterful

  266. understanding. He knew about all of the

  267. old covenant practices, the priesthood,

  268. the sacrifices. He knew very intricate

  269. details involved in the book of Exodus

  270. that many of us would not know or would

  271. glance over if we were just reading it

  272. on our own. And so he had a masterful

  273. understanding of the Old Testament. But

  274. even better was he had a unique gift

  275. from God to be able to see how they

  276. directly related to the person and

  277. ministry of Jesus Christ. We gather that

  278. about him through this letter. We also

  279. gather that he has a pastor's heart.

  280. That what he sees is a particular group

  281. of Christians that are beginning to fade

  282. in their faith. They're beginning to

  283. grow weary. They're beginning to turn

  284. aside and his shepherd's heart is coming

  285. to them uh to with the staff to correct

  286. them and to lead them back in the way

  287. that they need to go. He has a pastor's

  288. heart.

  289. But who is this particular group of

  290. people that he's addressing? The most

  291. obvious answer is that they were Jewish

  292. Christians. After all, the letter is

  293. called to the Hebrews. And so that tells

  294. us that these are Jewish people. But it

  295. because of the Jewish nature of this

  296. letter, even the special attention to

  297. the priesthood of Jesus, some have come

  298. to believe that he's actually addressing

  299. a group of Jewish priests who had

  300. converted to Christianity just as we saw

  301. in Acts 6:7 where it says, "A great

    Acts 6:7

  302. company of the priests in Jerusalem

  303. became obedient to the faith." And so

  304. it's very possible that these are a

  305. group of priests who are now beginning

  306. to shrink back from their faith in

  307. Jesus. Well, why would they do that?

  308. They have a lot to lose. Because being a

  309. priest would garner you great wealth,

  310. great status and prosperity as well as

  311. uh protection. Because once you come

  312. under the people of Christ, you become a

  313. part of people that your people, your

  314. peers vehemently persecuted.

  315. They had a lot to lose.

  316. What we do know is that they were Jewish

  317. Christians who suffered immensely

  318. shortly after their conversions. Would

  319. you turn to Hebrews chapter 10 over just

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  320. a few pages to chapter 10 and verse 32?

  321. [snorts]

  322. Chapter 10:32 he said listen to what the

  323. author says to them but call to

  324. remembrance the former days in which

  325. after ye were illuminated that's a word

  326. way of talking about they came to see

  327. the light of Jesus so they they've

  328. become Christians now he says after that

  329. ye endured a great fight [snorts] of

  330. afflictions partly whilst ye were made a

  331. gazing stock both by reproaches and

  332. afflictions and partly

  333. whilst ye became companions of them that

  334. were so used. For ye had compassion of

  335. me and my bonds, and took joyfully the

  336. spoiling of your goods, knowing in

  337. yourselves that you have in heaven a

  338. better and an enduring substance. So,

  339. you can tell that early on they suffered

  340. for Jesus immensely. And not only that,

  341. but they partnered with those, they

  342. identified with those who were suffering

  343. for Jesus. And so they were people who

  344. knew something about suffering. We also

  345. know that they've been saved for a good

  346. while because if you go back to Hebrews

  347. uh chapter 5

  348. and verse 13

  349. or verse 12, excuse me, he says this,

  350. for when for the time ye ought to be

  351. teachers, you have need that one teach

  352. you again, which be the first principles

  353. of the oracles of God. He says, 'You've

  354. reached a time in your Christian life

  355. where you should be teaching others, but

  356. you still have to be schooled in some of

  357. these elementary principles of Jesus.

  358. And so, we know they've been saved for a

  359. good while.

  360. But we also know that as time went on

  361. and more persecution uh came and as life

  362. got rocky, they began to weaken and they

  363. were on the verge of stumbling in their

  364. faith. Go back over to chapter 12. Now,

  365. I told you we're going to bounce around

  366. a lot. So, have your Bibles ready. Go to

  367. chapter 12. I want you to see who this

  368. audience is.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  369. Chapter 12, verse number 12. Look at

  370. this encouragement he gives him after

  371. all of this fleshing out who Jesus is.

  372. He says, "Wherefore, lift up the hands

  373. which hang down and the feeble knees."

  374. You get that picture that it's like

  375. someone who is just downtrodden and

  376. they're shaky. They're wobbly. And he

  377. says, "No, no, let's lift up the hands

  378. that hang down, and let's strengthen the

  379. feeble knees." In verse 13, he says,

  380. "And make straight paths for your feet,

  381. lest that which is lame be turned out of

  382. the way, and let it rather be healed."

  383. He's calling them back to Christ,

  384. because Christ is where they will find

  385. the strength for their weak knees and

  386. their broken feet, and where they'll

  387. find healing from the persecution that

  388. they have endured.

  389. We could say that they were experiencing

  390. similar struggles that you go through

  391. your life when it gets shaky. That we're

  392. when you're you're in financial ruins

  393. and you can't find a job and the car

  394. breaks down again. How do you feel when

  395. that's going on? Your hands are probably

  396. hanging low. Your feet are probably

  397. getting wobbly in that moment. Or when

  398. you're going through some serious family

  399. problems. When it seems like your spouse

  400. is your enemy or like your parents are a

  401. train wreck or or or like your kids

  402. won't have anything to do with you,

  403. that's how you can feel weakened. Or

  404. when your faith is shaken by the moral

  405. failure of a mentor in your life or the

  406. changing winds of of doctrine or or or

  407. perhaps when persecution is on the rise.

  408. See, in those moments, we are tempted to

  409. doubt. We're tempted to draw back, to go

  410. quiet, to shrink back from our faith, to

  411. deconstruct at times, we might say. And

  412. we often seek safety and security. Think

  413. about this for a second. We often seek

  414. safety and security in other places

  415. because our faith hasn't seemed to

  416. provide it. That's what can happen. And

  417. that's where these believers were at.

  418. They're on the verge of turning away

  419. from Christ and seeking safety under the

  420. shelter and protection of the old

  421. covenant system

  422. because there under the old covenant

  423. they were protected from Rome. Under the

  424. old covenant they were protected from

  425. persecution.

  426. Under the old covenant they had mental,

  427. financial and physical stability in

  428. their lives. But the author is careful

  429. to remind them that apart from Christ,

  430. there is nothing but danger. Would you

  431. look over at chapter 10 again?

  432. Chapter 10 and verse 26.

  433. He says this, "For if we sin willfully,

  434. after that we have received the

  435. knowledge of the truth, there remainth

  436. no more sacrifice for sins, but a

  437. certain fearful looking for of judgment

  438. and fiery indignation, which shall

  439. devour the adversaries. He that despised

  440. Moses's law died without mercy under two

  441. or three witnesses. Of how much sarer

  442. punishment suppose ye shall he be

  443. thought worthy who hath trottened

  444. underfoot the son of God and hath

  445. counted the blood of the covenant

  446. wherewith he was sanctified an unholy

  447. thing and hath done despite under the

  448. spirit of grace. Do you catch what he's

  449. saying here? that when you come to the

  450. knowledge of who Jesus is and you have

  451. seen what he has done for you and you

  452. have come so close to the new covenant,

  453. when you turn away from him, all that's

  454. left for you is fiery indignation.

  455. Now, one of the things that we're going

  456. to wrestle with in the book of Hebrews

  457. is this. Can a believer lose their

  458. salvation if they turn away from Jesus

  459. Christ?

  460. Because what you're going to find is

  461. there are very real warnings about it in

  462. this book. Warnings that cause countless

  463. scholars to wrestle and grapple with it.

  464. But what I've come to find in studying

  465. this is that following each warning

  466. comes an affirmation

  467. that they are secure if they are

  468. genuinely in Christ. Would you look at

  469. verse 38 here of chapter 10? He says,

  470. 'Now the just shall live by faith, but

  471. if any man draw back, my soul shall have

  472. no pleasure in him. You see the warning

  473. there that God is not going to have any

  474. pleasure in somebody who turns back from

  475. his son. But notice what he says. But we

  476. are not of them who draw back under

  477. predition, but of them that believe to

  478. the saving of the soul. Chapter 6 is is

  479. one of the famous passages where he he

  480. he warns them that if you have come and

  481. you have tasted of the heavenly gift and

  482. you have partaken of the Holy Ghost that

  483. if you fall away it's impossible he says

  484. to renew them again under repentance but

  485. then at the very end of that chapter he

  486. says but we're persuaded of better

  487. things of you. So what he's

  488. communicating is that apart from Christ,

  489. there is great danger.

  490. But if you are in Christ, you are going

  491. to stay faithful to him and you have no

  492. danger to face.

  493. And so what we can tell is that they

  494. were struggling. They were drawing back

  495. from from Christ.

  496. And the only thing apart from Christ is

  497. danger. So let me summarize here. This

  498. audience is made up of Jewish Christians

  499. who are wavering in their faith because

  500. their foundations have been shaken by

  501. the things they've experienced in life.

  502. That's who they are. And now they are

  503. seeking shelter, stability, and security

  504. apart from Christ in an old system that

  505. only leaves them in the danger of

  506. judgment if they are not really in

  507. Christ.

  508. And so that's the audience. Well, what

  509. is the author's solution for these

  510. people?

  511. It's very simple.

  512. Hold fast

  513. to God's son. Hold fast to God's son.

  514. Yes, life is shaky,

  515. but don't stop clinging to Christ.

  516. Yes, you're experiencing pain and

  517. suffering, but cling to Christ. Yes,

  518. there's persecution mounting against

  519. you, but cling to Christ. Yes, there may

  520. be safety in those other things, but

  521. cling to Christ. That is his message to

  522. them. Let's let's see it though from the

  523. text. The refrain to hold fast to Christ

  524. is the repeated application to every

  525. argument presented about Christ's

  526. identity and his ministry. Go back to

  527. chapter 2 verse one. This time we'll

  528. make our way through through the the

  529. book here. If you look at chapter 2

  530. verse one, he says this. Therefore, we

  531. ought to give the more earnest heed to

  532. the things which we have heard, lest at

  533. any time we should let them slip. What

  534. does that sound like? Lest at any time

  535. what you were holding to should slip out

  536. of your hands. He's calling to hold

  537. fast. Look over at chapter 3 verse

  538. number six. But Christ as a son over his

  539. own house, whose house are we if we hold

  540. fast the confidence and the rejoicing of

  541. the hope firm unto the end. Look down at

  542. verse 14. For we [snorts] are made

  543. partakers of Christ if we what does that

  544. say? Hold the beginning of our

  545. confidence. What does that say?

  546. Steadfast unto the end. The idea of hold

  547. fast means grab on and don't let go.

  548. That's the idea here. hold and steadfast

  549. there. Look at chapter 4:14 that we read

  550. at the beginning of our message tonight.

  551. Seeing then that we have a great high

  552. priest that is passed into the heavens,

  553. Jesus the son of God, let us, what does

  554. that say? Hold fast our profession.

  555. Look over at chapter 6 verse 18. Chapter

  556. 6 18. that by two immutable things in

  557. which it was impossible for God to lie,

  558. we might have strong consolation, who

  559. have fled for refuge to what?

  560. >> Lay hold upon the hope set before us.

  561. That hope in Christ. Look over at

  562. chapter 10 now. Verse 23.

  563. Chapter 10 verse 23.

  564. [snorts]

  565. He says, "Let us what? Hold fast the

  566. profession of our faith without

  567. wavering, for he is faithful that

  568. promise. Look down at verse 35.

  569. What does those first three words say?

  570. Cast not away. Let me ask you this. If

  571. something is in your hand

  572. and you cast it away, is it still in

  573. your hand? So, you see this repeated

  574. application over and over and over

  575. again? What we're going to see is is

  576. that the author's structure to this

  577. sermon is this. Here's who Jesus is.

  578. Here's what Jesus did. So, hold on to

  579. him. That's what you see time and time

  580. again. And so, I want to say to you that

  581. no matter what you're going through, the

  582. shelter and the stability and the

  583. security that you need the most is found

  584. only in Jesus Christ.

  585. Because when everything is falling apart

  586. and and when everything isn't going the

  587. way that you thought it would and when

  588. everything seems against you and it's

  589. just pain and suffering and weakness and

  590. people turn their backs on you, you know

  591. who's still there? Jesus Christ. He's

  592. unmovable. He's eternal. So in those

  593. moments, do not draw back. Do not shy

  594. away. Do not drift in your faith because

  595. the most stabilizing and securing force

  596. in the entire universe, I submit to you,

  597. is the one who made it. The one who made

  598. it, and that's Jesus Christ.

  599. Now, why is that?

  600. What is it about Jesus that makes him

  601. the stabilizing force that you need to

  602. cling to? The author of Hebrews is going

  603. to make two primary arguments.

  604. Number one is that Jesus is God's

  605. greater word to mankind. Jesus is God's

  606. greater word to mankind. At this time, I

  607. want to draw your attention to our our

  608. title slide here and explain the

  609. intentionality

  610. behind this. The setting here is the

  611. first century uh temple in Jerusalem.

  612. But I want to point out that it's

  613. looking into the Holy of Holies, which

  614. represents the earthly dwelling place of

  615. God. But I want you to remember the

  616. words that Jesus said, "Destroy this

  617. temple and I will raise it up again in

  618. three days." The temple of which he

  619. spake, it says, was his body.

  620. See, I want you to go back to Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  621. chapter 1 verse one.

  622. Excuse me. Chapter 1 verse uh three

  623. speaking of Jesus, it says this, who

  624. being the brightness of his glory and

  625. the express image of his person. Do you

  626. know what that means? Jesus is the

  627. dwelling place of almighty God. The

  628. fullness of who God is dwells in the

  629. body and person of Jesus Christ. He is

  630. the temple of God. In fact, that's a

  631. point that will be made uh later on in

  632. chapter 8, that he's the greater

  633. tabernacle.

  634. Now, I want you to notice the cross

  635. there. The cross represents the identity

  636. and the finished work of Jesus Christ,

  637. what he accomplished through his death

  638. on the cross. And I want you to notice

  639. how the cross is positioned above these

  640. Old Testament relics. there on the left

  641. side you have the angels.

  642. Hebrews 1 and two uh says that Jesus is

  643. proven to be greater than the angels.

  644. And then in chapters chapter 3, he's the

  645. greater Moses represented by the two

  646. tablets of stone, the ten commandments

  647. there. In Hebrews 4, Jesus is greater

  648. than a greater captain than Joshua, who

  649. leads us to a greater rest than Canaan

  650. represented by the grapes there. He's

  651. better. He's greater than Joshua. and

  652. his rest is greater than Canaan. Then

  653. chapters 5-8 show that Jesus is a

  654. greater priest than Aaron ministering in

  655. a greater tabernacle in heaven mediating

  656. a greater covenant in the new covenant

  657. and which is represented by the

  658. candlestick and the priestly

  659. breastplate. And then in Hebrews uh nine

  660. Jesus is the greater sacrifice than all

  661. the sacrificial animals represented

  662. there by the lamb. Hebrews 10 reveals

  663. Jesus to be the better, newer, and

  664. living way into God's presence.

  665. And so here you have the cross. Jesus

  666. ranks above the old covenant relics.

  667. Notice the the temple veil seated at the

  668. foot of the cross. What happened when

  669. Jesus cried out, "It was it is

  670. finished," and he gave up the ghost. He

  671. breathed his last breath. What

  672. immediately happened at the temple?

  673. Do we remember

  674. the veil was torn in two from the top to

  675. the bottom? You know what nature does?

  676. It would weigh down and tear from the

  677. bottom to the top. You know why it tore

  678. from the top to the bottom? God tore it.

  679. signifying Hebrews is the only book in

  680. the Bible that gives us this

  681. understanding and analogy that when God

  682. tore the temple veil into through the

  683. death of c of of the cross he made a new

  684. and living way into God's presence and

  685. that is through Jesus Christ

  686. through Jesus Christ and so now we enter

  687. God's presence by faith in him and so

  688. what we can see is that [snorts] the

  689. primary very reason the author argues as

  690. to why uh uh we should hold fast to the

  691. son of god is because he's the greater

  692. word that he's the the message that god

  693. has given in the gospel of Jesus Christ

  694. it provides for you a greater minister a

  695. greater leader a greater priest a

  696. greater atonement a greater forgiveness

  697. and not only a greater way to god but

  698. the only way to go that is what Jesus

  699. has provided

  700. See, the son of God provides you with a

  701. greater stability, a greater shelter, a

  702. greater security, and a greater

  703. salvation, not only than Judaism, but

  704. over everything else. That he's greater

  705. than money. He's greater than your job.

  706. He's greater than your boss. He's

  707. greater than your problems. He's greater

  708. than your bank account. And many of you

  709. would say, "Amen." It's not that hard.

  710. But he's greater than all of that. He's

  711. greater than your health problems. He's

  712. greater than your family problems. He's

  713. greater than any political power or

  714. governors or or presidents or kings.

  715. He's greater than any podcaster, false

  716. prophet or fallen mentor.

  717. See, people and material things, they

  718. all come and go. But as the author of

  719. Hebrews says, Jesus Christ is the same

  720. yesterday and today and forever. Amen.

  721. >> In Hebrews chapter 2, he says that they

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  722. shall all change like a garment, but you

  723. remain the same.

  724. Jesus

  725. is the one that you should cling to.

  726. He's the greater word from God. [snorts]

  727. That's why you should hold fast. But

  728. then there's a second argument in the

  729. book of Hebrews,

  730. and that is that Jesus is not only God's

  731. greater word, but he is God's final

  732. word. is God's final word. Would you

  733. look at chapter 1 verse one? And this is

  734. where we'll start here in a couple of

  735. weeks. Chapter 1 verse one. God who at

  736. sunundry times and in diverse manners

  737. spake in time past unto the fathers by

  738. the prophets. Question. Do the prophets

  739. have some good words from God?

  740. Absolutely.

  741. God used the prophets to speak to Israel

  742. in tremendous ways. He gave them signs.

  743. He gave them wonders. They they did like

  744. what seems to us goofy little skits to

  745. illustrate God's word to him of God. God

  746. God rained uh fire from heaven to

  747. consume an altar through a prophet to

  748. prove that he is greater than the

  749. prophets of Baal and then their gods. He

  750. He's a God who stopped the rain for

  751. three years to make a point here of how

  752. desperately Israel needs him. God also

  753. prophesied of his son and of the

  754. crucifixion and of the resurrection and

  755. of a kingdom to come throughout. There's

  756. a lot of good words from the prophets.

  757. But look at verse number two.

  758. God hath in these last days spoken unto

  759. us by his son.

  760. By his son.

  761. God hasn't spoken to you through any

  762. ordinary person.

  763. He has spoken to you through his very

  764. son.

  765. We're talking about the message of the

  766. gospel. The message that Jesus came to

  767. bring redemption by grace alone through

  768. faith alone in Jesus alone.

  769. A a good a good word that through faith

  770. in Christ you can have that everlasting

  771. kingdom that is to come. You can have

  772. that everlasting inheritance. Your sins

  773. can be forgiven. You can be declared

  774. righteous before God. That's what God

  775. has spoken through Jesus Christ. But

  776. notice it says he hath in these last

  777. days spoken unto us by his son. You know

  778. what that indicates? He's the last word

  779. from God. You know what that means? It

  780. means that Joseph Smith's another

  781. testament of Jesus Christ is a false

  782. testament because God did not say his

  783. last word would be through Joseph Smith.

  784. It also tells us that God did not speak

  785. through Muhammad because his final word

  786. came through his son Jesus.

  787. [snorts]

  788. The call of Hebrews then is to hear and

  789. heed what God sent through Jesus.

  790. The word spoken through Jesus.

  791. Go to Hebrews chapter 2:1. Let's do

  792. another quick walk through here of

  793. Hebrews chapter 2 vers1. Notice this. It

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  794. says, "Therefore, we ought to give the

  795. more earnest heed to the things which we

  796. have heard." You catch that? God starts

  797. off by saying he has spoken through his

  798. son. And then right off the bat in

  799. chapter 2, therefore, we need to give

  800. heed. Do you know what that means? To

  801. hear and do what we have heard from him.

  802. Look at chapter 3:7.

  803. Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith,

  804. today if you will hear his voice, harden

  805. not your hearts. This is actually

  806. repeated again in verse 15. While it is

  807. said, today if you will hear his voice,

  808. harden not your hearts. And then again

  809. in chapter number four, it says the same

  810. thing. I'm trying to remember what verse

  811. it was. I didn't uh write it down. Uh

  812. but it says it again. Verse seven. again

  813. he limitth a certain day saying in David

  814. today after so long a time as it is said

  815. today if you will hear his voice harden

  816. not your hearts and so very early on

  817. he's getting this across to them because

  818. Jesus is the final word you need to hear

  819. his voice and do what he says cling to

  820. him hold fast to him let's go all the

  821. way forward to Hebrews chapter 12 okay

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  822. so Hebrews 1 started with God has spoken

  823. to us in these last days by his son.

  824. Now, Hebrews is coming to a close of the

  825. main theological section before some uh

  826. further uh final exhortations. And if

  827. you look at chapter 12, verse number 24,

  828. look what he says that you've come to

  829. Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant,

  830. and to the blood of sprinkling that

  831. speaketh better things than that of

  832. Abel. See that ye refuse not him that

  833. speaketh. For if they escaped not, who

  834. refused him that spake on earth,

  835. speaking of Moses, much more shall not

  836. we escape, if we turn away from him that

  837. speaketh from heaven.

  838. Do you see the clarity here? God spoken

  839. by his son. You need to hear him. See

  840. that you don't refuse him. If you

  841. ignore, if you reject, if you set aside

  842. God's final word, what is there left for

  843. you to turn to? That's his point.

  844. And so the book begins by saying, "God

  845. spoke to us by his son." And it closes

  846. with a command not to turn away from him

  847. that speaks from heaven. You know what

  848. this reminds me of? When the crowd went

  849. away from Jesus and Jesus turned to his

  850. disciples and asked them, "Will you go

  851. away also?" Do you remember Peter's

  852. response there?

  853. He said, "Lord, to whom shall we go? for

  854. thou hast the words of life.

  855. That's the call that the author is

  856. making to these believers who are shaky

  857. in their faith and they're beginning to

  858. draw back and to shrink away from and

  859. turn away from Jesus Christ. He's

  860. saying, "No, if you if you turn away

  861. from God's final word, you have no other

  862. word to turn to. There's no other

  863. sacrifice to to run to that can be

  864. greater than the sacrifice that the son

  865. of God made on the cross."

  866. Hebrews plainly states that if you walk

  867. away from the son of God who is his

  868. final word, you have nowhere else to

  869. turn. Thus, the message of Hebrews

  870. becomes clear. Hold fast to God's son

  871. because he is God's greater and final

  872. word. That's Hebrews in a nutshell. Hold

  873. fast to God's son because he is God's

  874. greater and final word.

  875. [snorts] And so when your accounts are

  876. running low,

  877. hold fast to God's son.

  878. And as you go through the struggles of

  879. your marriage, hold fast to God's son.

  880. When your parents are a train wreck,

  881. hold fast to God's son. When your kids

  882. want nothing to do with you and have

  883. turned their backs on you, hold fast to

  884. God's son.

  885. When a when a tremendous mentor in your

  886. life falls in immorality, hold fast to

  887. God's son.

  888. When when the church that you went to

  889. changed completely, hold fast to God's

  890. son. As you study God's word and you you

  891. begin to think, maybe what I always

  892. thought isn't what God has said, just

  893. hold fast to God's son.

  894. Because sometimes in that moment you can

  895. feel shaky. You may not know where to

  896. go. But what you know is this. What is

  897. Chris? There there are so many things in

  898. the scripture that we can get bogged

  899. down and worried about if we don't have

  900. the interpretation right. But let's just

  901. stop for a second and consider

  902. everything that is clear. And that is

  903. this. You need God's son. He did

  904. everything necessary for you to be

  905. saved. So cling first and foremost to

  906. him. Trust in him. Depend on him to lead

  907. you into the future. Hey church, when

  908. our country goes off the rails, hold

  909. fast to God's son. If we get a building,

  910. hold fast to God's son. If we don't get

  911. a building, hold fast to God's son.

  912. Times will change. People will come and

  913. go, but Jesus Christ is the same

  914. yesterday and today and forever. So hold

  915. fast to God's son. He's the greater and

  916. final word from God.

  917. [snorts] You ever seen those tall I

  918. think they're called like guide

  919. communication towers? Those they're I

  920. mean it it looks like they're like as

  921. big as this pulpit, but they go up like

  922. a thousand feet. We have one of those

  923. that's for K Denver TV that broadcast

  924. digitally to this whole uh Boulder

  925. County, Weld County area. And it's

  926. [snorts] out there in Frederick. And as

  927. I drive to take my dog to the kennel out

  928. there, I go right by and I look at that

  929. thing and I'm like, "How in the world

  930. does that thing stand

  931. through through the craziest windstorms

  932. that we have and through every blizzard

  933. and lightning strikes that somehow this

  934. huge tower continues to stand there, 158

  935. ft tall and really not bigger than this

  936. square probably? How in the world does

  937. it do that? It's got all these thick

  938. gauge wires coming off it on every side

  939. going all the way up to the top and they

  940. are they [snorts] are anchored to a 15t

  941. deep block of concrete and it perfectly

  942. in tension form uh keeps that thing

  943. standing still through every storm that

  944. comes. Can I read one more verse to you?

  945. Let's go to Hebrews chapter 6.

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  946. Go to chapter 6

  947. verse 18. We read verse 18 earlier but I

  948. want you to see what follows.

  949. It says that by two immutable things.

  950. You know what that word immutable means?

  951. Unchangeable.

  952. By two unchangeable things in which it

  953. was impossible for God to lie. We might

  954. have a strong consolation who have fled

  955. for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set

  956. before us. Watch this. Verse 19. Which

  957. hope we have as a what does that say?

  958. Anchor of the soul. Both what?

  959. Sure and steadfast.

  960. That hope he's talking about is the hope

  961. you have in Jesus Christ.

  962. that when your soul is anchored

  963. completely to Jesus,

  964. it doesn't matter what storm comes into

  965. your life, you're going to stand firm.

  966. It doesn't matter when the cancer comes.

  967. It doesn't matter when someone you love

  968. dies.

  969. It doesn't matter when when the winds of

  970. change are going through Christianity or

  971. as we go from election to election and

  972. from power to power or job to job. It

  973. doesn't matter what's going on in your

  974. life. When your soul is anchored to

  975. Jesus Christ, none of those things can

  976. move you. Why? He is both sure and

  977. steadfast.

  978. So my prayer once again is [snorts] as

  979. we go through this study that you will

  980. come to know and value Jesus more than

  981. you ever have before.

  982. And then that knowing him,

  983. you would hold fast

  984. that no matter what comes, you stand

  985. firm in Jesus Christ.

  986. Let's pray. Our heavenly father, I'm so

  987. thankful for this precious book and I'm

  988. so looking forward in my personal life

  989. of growing in my knowledge of Jesus

  990. Christ, my understanding of what he's

  991. done for us and of who he is.

  992. And I pray that all of us would grow in

  993. our knowledge of your son. But I pray

  994. that knowledge would not just remain in

  995. our head, but that it would make it to

  996. our hearts and [music] into our lives.

  997. That we would see that because he is

  998. sure and steadfast, [music] he is the
