  1. Let's take our Bibles and turn to

  2. Numbers chapter 35.

    Numbers 35 chapter mention

  3. Numbers 35.

  4. Just two more sermons from the book of

  5. Numbers, including tonight. Next week,

  6. we have church at camp on Thursday

  7. nights. And so, we won't be meeting here

  8. on Thursday. We'll be meeting at the

  9. special chuck wagon service up at camp.

  10. If you're interested in that, let me

  11. know. I'd be glad to get you the address

  12. for it. The the uh you want to be there

  13. 4:30. The dinner starts at 5:00 and then

  14. the service will be at about uh 6:00 or

  15. so and and then you can head home. It's

  16. about an hour south of here up in the

  17. foothills. So, I encourage you to come.

  18. That's always a great time together. Uh

  19. Numbers chapter 35. I guess I should

    Numbers 35 chapter mention

  20. turn myself there. And then uh yeah,

  21. then the following week we'll be closing

  22. out our series in Numbers. And then

  23. we'll be taking a step away on Thursday

  24. nights from the Old Testament to spend I

  25. don't know it'll probably be six months

  26. to a year in the book of Hebrews

  27. somewhere in there on Thursday nights.

  28. I'm looking forward to that to seeing

  29. the fulfillments of some of the things

  30. that we've studied in Genesis, Exodus,

  31. Leviticus, and Numbers as as much of

  32. Hebrews refers to these four books that

  33. we've covered thus far. And so we're

  34. greatly looking forward to that here in

  35. just a a couple of weeks away. Numbers

    Numbers 35 chapter mention

  36. chapter 35 and we're going to read the

  37. entire chapter uh tonight as it

  38. continues in the context here at the end

  39. of the inheritance. We saw the borders

  40. drawn last week and there's one name

  41. that's missing from uh the tribes in

  42. chapter 34 and that's the tribe of Levi.

  43. And the reason why is because Levi is

  44. not given a tribal allotment because the

  45. Lord is their inheritance. Nevertheless,

  46. those who serve in the tabernacle need a

  47. place to live. And so God provides that

  48. for them here. But we're going to see

  49. that this chapter is about much more

  50. than the Levitical inheritance, though

  51. it's directly connected to it. So let's

  52. begin reading in chapter 35 of the book

  53. of Numbers, verse one. And the Lord

  54. spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab

  55. by Jordan near Jericho, saying, Command

  56. the children of Israel, that they give

  57. unto the Levites of the inheritance of

  58. their possession cities to dwell in, and

  59. ye shall give also unto the Levites

  60. suburbs, for the cities round about

  61. them. And the cities shall they have to

  62. dwell in, and the suburbs of them shall

  63. be for their cattle, and for their

  64. goods, and for all their beasts. And the

  65. suburbs of the cities, which ye shall

  66. give unto the Levites, shall reach from

  67. the wall of the city, and outward a

  68. thousand cubits roundabout. And ye shall

  69. measure from without, the city on the

  70. east side 2,000 cubits, and on the south

  71. side 2,000 cubits, and on the west side

  72. 2,000 cubits, and on the north side

  73. 2,000 cubits, and the city shall be in

  74. the midst. This shall be to them the

  75. suburbs of the cities. And among the

  76. cities which ye shall give unto the

  77. Levites, there shall be six cities for

  78. refuge, which ye shall appoint for the

  79. manslayer, that he may flee thither, and

  80. to them ye shall add 40 and two cities.

  81. So all the cities which ye shall give to

  82. the Levites shall be 40 and eight

  83. cities, and them shall ye shall ye give

  84. with their suburbs. And the cities which

  85. ye shall give shall be of the portion of

  86. the children of Israel. From them that

  87. have many, ye shall give many. But from

  88. them that have few, ye shall give few.

  89. Everyone shall give of his cities

  90. according to the le unto the Levites

  91. according to the inheritance which he

  92. inheritth. And the Lord spake unto

  93. Moses, saying, "Speak unto the children

  94. of Israel, and say unto them, when you

  95. come over Jordan into the land of

  96. Canaan, then ye shall appoint you cities

  97. to be cities of refuge for you, that the

  98. slayer may flee thither, which killleth

  99. any person at unawares, and they shall

  100. be unto you cities for refuge from the

  101. avenger, that the manslayer die not

  102. until he stand before the congregation

  103. in judgment. And of these cities uh

  104. which ye shall give, six cities shall ye

  105. have for refuge. And ye shall give three

  106. cities on this side Jordan, and three

  107. cities which ye shall give in the land

  108. of Canaan, which shall be cities of

  109. refuge. These six cities shall be a

  110. refuge both for the children of Israel,

  111. and for the stranger, and for the

  112. sojourer among them, that everyone that

  113. kleth any person unawares may flee

  114. thither. And if he smite him with an

  115. instrument of iron, so that he die, he

  116. is a murderer, the murderer shall surely

  117. be put to death. And if he smite him

  118. with throwing a stone, wherewith he may

  119. die, and he die, he is a murderer, the

  120. murderer shall surely be put to death.

  121. Or if he smite him with an hand weapon

  122. of wood, wherewith he may die, and he

  123. die, he is a murderer. The murderer

  124. shall surely be put to death. the

  125. revenger of blood himself shall slay the

  126. murderer when he meetth him he shall

  127. slay him. But if he trust but if he

  128. thrust him of hatred or hurl at him by

  129. lying of weight that he die or in enmity

  130. smite him with his hand that he die. He

  131. that smote him shall surely be put to

  132. death for he is a murderer. The revenger

  133. of blood shall slay the murderer when he

  134. meetth him. But if he thrust him

  135. suddenly without enmity, or have cast

  136. upon him anything without lying of

  137. weight, or with any stone wherewith he

  138. may die, seeing him not, and cast it

  139. upon him that he die, and was not his

  140. enemy, neither sought harm, then the

  141. congregation shall judge between the

  142. slayer and the revenger of blood

  143. according to these judgments. I want to

  144. pause for just a moment to just catch us

  145. up here that what we're talking about is

  146. the difference between manslaughter and

  147. murder. And I want you to notice the

  148. congregation's

  149. responsibility in this there in verse

  150. 24. It says, "The congregation shall

  151. judge between the slayer and the

  152. revenger of blood according to these

  153. judgments. And the congregation shall

  154. deliver the slayer out of the hand of

  155. the revenger of blood. And the

  156. congregation shall restore him to the

  157. city of his refuge, whether he was fled,

  158. and he shall abide in it unto the death

  159. of the high priest, which was anointed

  160. with the holy oil. But if the slayer

  161. shall at any time come without the

  162. border of the city of his refuge,

  163. whether he was fled, and the revenger of

  164. blood find him without the borders of

  165. the city of his refuge, and the revenger

  166. of blood killed the slayer, he shall not

  167. be guilty of blood. Because he should

  168. have remained in the city of his refuge

  169. until the death of the high priest. But

  170. after the death of the high priest, the

  171. slayer shall return into this land of

  172. his possession. So [snorts] these things

  173. shall be for a statute of judgment unto

  174. you throughout your generations in all

  175. your dwellings. Who so killth any

  176. person, the murderer shall be put to

  177. death by the mouth of witnesses, but one

  178. witness shall not testify against any

  179. person to cause him to die. Moreover, ye

  180. shall take no satisfaction or ransom

  181. price for the life of a murderer which

  182. is guilty of death, but he shall sur be

  183. surely put to death. and ye shall take

  184. no satisfaction for him that has fled to

  185. the city of his refuge, that he should

  186. come again to dwell in the land until

  187. the death of the priest. So shall so ye

  188. shall not pollute the land wherein ye

  189. are. For blood it defileth the land, and

  190. the land cannot be cleansed of the blood

  191. that is shed therein, but by the blood

  192. of him that shed it. Defile not

  193. therefore the land which ye shall

  194. inhabit wherein I dwell. For I the Lord

  195. dwell among the children of Israel. The

  196. title of our message tonight is

  197. guardians of human life. Guardians of

  198. human life. Our theme series this year

  199. has focused on how we manage the

  200. responsibilities that God places in our

  201. hands to magnify his glory. That's how

  202. we hear well done. We've talked about

  203. how to do that in practical areas of

  204. life. Whether we talked about singleness

  205. back around Valentine's Day and how to

  206. manage your single years to glorify God.

  207. We've talked about womanhood on Mother's

  208. Day and manhood on Father's Day. And of

  209. course, through our life connection

  210. series, we've talked about stewarding

  211. things such as time, health, energy, and

  212. even our thoughts. And tonight, although

  213. our message comes from the our series in

  214. numbers, it very well could fall under

  215. our well done series because it covers

  216. one of the most sacred responsibilities

  217. that God places into our hands. And that

  218. is the protection of human life. The

  219. protection of human life. While Numbers

  220. 35 deals with cities, I hope you realize

  221. it's about much more than cities. It's

  222. about Israel's responsibility to be

  223. guardians of human life. It's about how

  224. they judge between murder and

  225. manslaughter. How they deal with them

  226. reflects the justice of the God who

  227. dwells in their midst. [snorts] God is

  228. not just concerned that Israel gets the

  229. land, as we've seen over the last couple

  230. of weeks. He's concerned that they keep

  231. the land. And I don't just mean in the

  232. way that they they [snorts] continue to

  233. live in it, but in the way they watch

  234. over it, protect it, and keep it pure in

  235. this particular instance from innocent

  236. blood. God said the shedding of innocent

  237. blood defiles

  238. the land. And so guarding human life was

  239. a sacred responsibility that God

  240. entrusted to Israel. And guarding human

  241. life is a sacred responsibility that God

  242. still entrusts to his people today.

  243. Whether we're talking about the lives of

  244. your family, your wife, your kids,

  245. you're responsible to protect them, to

  246. watch over them. It could be the

  247. responsibility that we have to care and

  248. protect the unborn lives in our society.

  249. If God calls you into the military, it

  250. can involve protecting the lives of your

  251. brothers and sisters in arms. It can be

  252. defending your nation against the

  253. vicious attacks of its enemies. There's

  254. a responsibility there to care for your

  255. own people.

  256. As an employer, it could be the

  257. responsibility of implementing safety

  258. features at job sites to ensure that

  259. that that there's not as much danger as

  260. what there could be. Whether it's all

  261. the scaffolding and the railings that

  262. they put up there, ensuring a safe work

  263. environment. Hey, if you're a Christian

  264. and you're a boss, God calls you to care

  265. and protect human life.

  266. >> [snorts]

  267. >> And so when it comes to murder and

  268. manslaughter,

  269. let me clarify that we're not called to

  270. be vigilante uh revengers

  271. of blood as we may have read in our

  272. text, but to utilize the justice system

  273. that God has made available to us that

  274. he's put in our hands. We're to make

  275. good use of that. But what we know is

  276. that God calls his people to be

  277. guardians of human life. With God's help

  278. tonight, I hope to show you first of all

  279. why we should be guardians of human

  280. life. But then I also hope to show us

  281. how we can be good guardians of human

  282. life in our day and time in our context.

  283. Particularly what is your role? What is

  284. your responsibility

  285. in guarding human life today?

  286. I want you to notice first of all that

  287. Israel's guardianship is placed within

  288. the context of Levitical inheritance.

  289. Now again because the Lord was the

  290. Levites inheritance, he did not give

  291. them a tribal lot. They were blessed to

  292. uh serve in the transportation, the

  293. setup and the services of the

  294. tabernacle. They were blessed with close

  295. proximity to God. In fact, in their

  296. wilderness journey, they lived directly

  297. around the tabernacle of God. And so

  298. that was a huge blessing for them. On

  299. top of that, we've studied how God gave

  300. them the tithes of Israel that they get

  301. to distribute amongst them a tenth of

  302. Israel's produce, their livestock, the

  303. meat from their sacrifices. And so, uh,

  304. though Levi was not given a large land,

  305. they were given a rich inheritance.

  306. But at this point, they still need a

  307. place to live because when they get uh

  308. crossover Jordan, they come into Canaan,

  309. they're not going to live in tents

  310. around the tabernacle anymore. God also

  311. intends for them to have a permanent

  312. dwelling place and also a place where

  313. they can keep their livestock. And so

  314. God tells them that they're going to

  315. live in cities within the tribal

  316. inheritance of God's people. And so

  317. therefore, God commanded Israel to give

  318. the Levites a total of 48 cities and

  319. suburbs. This word translated suburbs is

  320. the a word for pasture lands. That it's

  321. where they can uh keep their whether

  322. they build barns or stables, whatever it

  323. might be, but where they can keep their

  324. livestock and and store their produce

  325. and all of those things. That's what

  326. their the suburbs are for. And so God

  327. says that they're to he gives these

  328. measurements here and it could be a

  329. little bit confusing. It says that

  330. they're to measure uh out from the wall

  331. outward a thousand cubits all the way

  332. around which would be about 1,500 ft.

  333. And then it gives a second measurement

  334. uh that says 2,000. And so which is it?

  335. I think we're missing something that

  336. they understood that more than likely

  337. what's going on here is that that it's

  338. it's the idea that it's going uh 2,000

  339. cubits squared. So you got 1,000 going

  340. this way, 1,000 going this way, and

  341. 2,000s uh going all the way around. More

  342. than likely, that's what's going on. So

  343. God gives them basically a a a city that

  344. is about 3/4 of a square mile is what

  345. they get to have just as the Levites.

  346. And so [snorts] the purpose of these

  347. cities now is for the Levites, number

  348. one, to have a place to dwell and a

  349. place to keep their livestock. That's

  350. what the text tells us. But I want to

  351. draw our attention to something that

  352. Levi's dispersement among the tribes is

  353. actually a fulfillment of Jacob's curse

  354. upon Levi in Genesis chapter 49.

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  355. If you were with us back then, years

  356. ago, you might remember that Simeon and

  357. Levi brutally slaughtered the city of

  358. Sheckchum because they defiled their

  359. sister. And uh Jacob told them that you

  360. have made me to stink before the

  361. inhabitants of the land. And at J

  362. Jacob's deathbed when he was blessing

  363. his sons, he said that Simeon and Levi

  364. are instruments of cruelty.

  365. He said, "I will divide them in Jacob

  366. and scatter them throughout Israel." And

  367. what we find as we go into the

  368. inheriting of the land of Canaan is that

  369. Simeon does not get its own tribal

  370. allotment. Simeon is kind of absorbed

  371. into the tribe of Judah. And then we

  372. have the Levites only receiving cities,

  373. but their cities are all throughout the

  374. people of Israel. But I want you to

  375. notice the grace of God.

  376. Because when Israel worshiped the golden

  377. calf back at Mount Si and it was time to

  378. for Moses to draw a line in the sand and

  379. say, "Who is on the Lord's side?

  380. Remember who stood with Moses? The tribe

  381. of Levi. And the tribe of Levi executed

  382. at the command of the Lord 3,000

  383. covenant breakers. And God promised at

  384. that time to bestow a blessing upon

  385. them. And when we came to the book of

  386. Numbers, that blessing was they would be

  387. the ones to serve in the holy place.

  388. They would be the ones who would not

  389. inherit a land but would inherit the

  390. Lord. And what you see God doing here is

  391. that he has reversed this curse that

  392. Jacob had put on them and turned it into

  393. a blessing for the tribe of Levi.

  394. Now the once cruel tribe will become a

  395. refuge for guilty sinners.

  396. [snorts] It's amazing. I'm thankful that

  397. God gives grace even to guilty people.

  398. I'm thankful that he can turn

  399. generational curses into generational

  400. blessings. That your past doesn't have

  401. to define your future because God gives

  402. grace in Jesus Christ.

  403. God gave Levi 48 cities among the 12

  404. tribes. And he designates that six of

  405. them are to be called cities of refuge.

  406. And so now we turn to God's instruction

  407. regarding these cities. In verse number

  408. nine,

  409. the Lord commands Israel to select six

  410. cities of refuge when they cross over

  411. Jordan. And he gives two purposes for uh

  412. or excuse me, he gives a particular

  413. purpose for these cities. If you look at

  414. verse uh number 11, it says, "Then ye

  415. shall appoint you cities to be cities of

  416. refuge for you, that the slayer may flee

  417. thither, which killleth any person at

  418. unawares, and they shall be unto you

  419. cities for refuge from the avenger, that

  420. the mansllayer die not until he be he he

  421. stand before the congregation in

  422. judgment." And so these cities of refuge

  423. are to be a place of refuge for the

  424. mansllayer from the avenger of blood.

  425. The manslayer is a man who committed

  426. what we know today as manslaughter or

  427. homicide. That it's a person who who did

  428. not premeditate his actions.

  429. Nevertheless, his actions resulted in

  430. someone's death, even if it was

  431. accidental.

  432. >> [snorts]

  433. >> When that happened, the nearest of kin,

  434. which is what the word avenger literally

  435. means, the nearest of kin was appointed

  436. to avenge the blood of his slain family

  437. member. And this was particularly true

  438. when it comes to murder. And so the

  439. responsibility of the next of kin is I

  440. it falls in line with God's first

  441. establishment that who so shedth man's

  442. blood by man shall his blood be shed.

  443. That comes from all the way back in

  444. Genesis chapter chapter 9:6 that after

  445. God flooded the earth in judgment for

  446. their wickedness and their violence, one

  447. of the first commands he gave to Noah

  448. and his family was anytime someone sheds

  449. a man's blood by man, their blood is to

  450. be shed. God confirmed that then in

  451. Leviticus

    Leviticus 24:1

  452. 24:1 17. And so the avenger of blood is

  453. responsible to bring justice for the

  454. death of his loved one. But because that

  455. in particular was applied to

  456. premeditated murder, God promised in

  457. Exodus 21:3 that he would appoint a

    Exodus 21:3

  458. place for the mansllayer to flee. And

  459. here in this chapter, God appoints that

  460. to be cities of refuge, six of them. And

  461. so you have these places where they are

  462. to uh flee. And in in verse 12, it tells

  463. us that the specific uh reason for this

  464. was so that uh they could flee until

  465. they stand in judgment before the

  466. congreg congregation. And so uh you

  467. might call it like a a [snorts]

  468. glorified holding place until trial

  469. comes. And so that's the purpose of

  470. this. And it's and it says specifically

  471. if you look at verse 12 in the middle of

  472. the verse that the manslayer die not. Do

  473. you see what God's doing here? He's

  474. ensuring that a person who has

  475. accidentally killed someone is not put

  476. to death before it is determined that it

  477. was not murder.

  478. Because as you can imagine, when the

  479. life of your loved one is taken, you

  480. want vengeance and you want justice and

  481. and they had this space for the avenger

  482. of blood to do just that. And God is

  483. concerned about guarding the life of the

  484. individual that he does not determine is

  485. worthy of death. He holds him culpable.

  486. He still must go to this city of refuge

  487. and he must stay there till he stands

  488. trial. And we're going to see in a

  489. minute that he must stay there even

  490. after the trial if he has committed

  491. manslaughter. And so it's not like God

  492. is letting him off scot-free. We'll see

  493. that here in just a moment. But the Lord

  494. commands them here to select three

  495. cities on the east side of Jordan and

  496. three cities on the west side of the

  497. Jordan. They're positioned strategically

  498. to be central so that they're they're

  499. everyone's as close to one as they

  500. possibly can be. The farthest person on

  501. one side is going to be the same

  502. distance as the farthest person on the

  503. other side. And so they're dis to be

  504. dispersed in this way. But then what the

  505. Lord does is he distinguishes for them

  506. the difference between murder and

  507. manslaughter. In verses 16 through verse

  508. 29,

  509. he defines murder as the knowing,

  510. willful, and intentional taking of human

  511. life. He begins by dealing with the

  512. instrument used. If you look at verse

  513. 16, it says, "If he smite him with an

  514. instrument of iron so that he die, he's

  515. a murderer. The murderer shall surely be

  516. put to death." It says, "And if he smite

  517. him with a with throwing a stone,

  518. wherewith he may die, and he die, he is

  519. a murderer. the murderer uh uh shall

  520. surely be put to death. Or if he smite

  521. him with an hand weapon of wood

  522. wherewith he may die, and he die, he is

  523. a murderer. The murderer shall surely be

  524. put to death. Let me just ask you for a

  525. second that if I took a pull of of solid

  526. iron and I whack somebody upside the

  527. head, is there potential that that

  528. person is going to die? Yes. And so even

  529. if you're even if you just get in a

  530. fight with someone and you didn't intend

  531. to kill them, if you're still using an

  532. instrument like that or throwing a stone

  533. at somebody that could cause death, then

  534. God still says that is murder. Why?

  535. Because you're using something that you

  536. know could cause death. He says that the

  537. murder is to be put to death. Well, then

  538. it says in verse 19, the revenger of

  539. blood himself shall slay the murderer

  540. when he meetth him. That he's to seek

  541. him out. And as soon as he comes across

  542. him, he's not to let him live. He's

  543. supposed to put him to death. And

  544. [snorts] then you see this in verse 20.

  545. Now it's looking at intention. But if he

  546. thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by

  547. lying in weight, ambush, plot,

  548. premeditation, that he die, or in

  549. enmity, hostility smite him with the

  550. hand that he die. He that smote him

  551. shall surely be put to death. He is a

  552. murderer. The revenger of blood shall

  553. slay the murderer when he meetth him.

  554. And so God makes it very clear that if

  555. an individual intentionally and

  556. irresponsibly takes somebody's life,

  557. then they are to face capital

  558. punishment. They're to face death. The

  559. revenger of blood is supposed to execute

  560. that justice.

  561. But then God turns here in verse number

  562. 22 to speaking of what we call

  563. manslaughter.

  564. It says in verse 22, "But if he thrust

  565. him suddenly without enmity or cast

  566. anything or cast upon him anything

  567. without lying of weight or with any

  568. stone wherewith he may die, seeing him

  569. not, and cast it upon him that he die,

  570. and was not his enemy, neither sought

  571. his harm." Then shall the congregation

  572. judge between the slayer and the

  573. revenger of blood according to these

  574. judgments. These judgments refers to

  575. what God just determined the difference

  576. between murder and manslaughter. And so

  577. the idea here is that if you're walking

  578. with a friend and you trip and you

  579. stumble and your sword sticks the other

  580. person and they die, that that's not

  581. intentional. It was a complete accident,

  582. a freak accident. Or if you're you're

  583. removing stone from the upper story of

  584. your house and you throw it off a roof

  585. and you didn't say for or anything like

  586. that. Somebody walks under it and it

  587. lands on them and kills them, but you

  588. never saw them. Did we read that? That's

  589. what it's talking about. That it's

  590. something that's not intentional, not

  591. planned out, not preconceived. It's a a

  592. complete accident. He says, "Then the

  593. congregation

  594. shall judge between the slayer and the

  595. revenger of blood according to uh these

  596. judgments." And so he's talking about

  597. now how you deal with the man's

  598. slaughter as opposed to the murder. And

  599. so as we read through these next few

  600. verses, uh look there. So it says in

  601. verse 24 that that he's to judge between

  602. them. And then it says in verse 25, "And

  603. the congregation shall deliver the

  604. slayer out of the hand of the revenger

  605. of blood, and the congregation shall

  606. restore him to the city of his refuge,

  607. whether he was fled." And so you get the

  608. chronology here that if a person

  609. accidentally kills somebody like that,

  610. then they are to flee immediately, drop

  611. everything you're doing, and go

  612. immediately to the city of refuge, lest

  613. the avenger of blood come and kill you.

  614. and you're to stay there until you can

  615. arrange a hearing before some of the

  616. congregation. So then they will you'll

  617. stand before them and they discern was

  618. this murder or was it manslaughter?

  619. Okay, it was a manslaughter. And so the

  620. congregation discerns that. But then he

  621. says the congregation is responsible to

  622. ensure that he makes it back to his city

  623. of refuge without the avenger of blood

  624. killing him. Why? God doesn't deem him

  625. worthy of death because of a freak

  626. accident. But neither does God leave him

  627. unpunished

  628. because it says there in verse number 25

  629. at the end of the verse, "And he shall

  630. abide in it until the death of the high

  631. priest which was anointed with the holy

  632. oil." And so now he has to stay there

  633. confined to the boundaries of this city

  634. and its suburbs. And he says stay there

  635. until the death of the high priest.

  636. Now, if the high priest dies a week

  637. later, that's great for you. But if the

  638. high priest was just in installed and

  639. anointed, then that could be a a long

  640. while before he dies. What What is this

  641. in particular about? Well, what we

  642. understand here is that while God does

  643. not hold a manslayer uh punishable by

  644. death, he does hold him uh uh culpable

  645. for it. that the shedding of blood only

  646. the shedding of blood can atone for the

  647. sinner. And so the the city of refuge

  648. might be considered this glorified

  649. prison where he is held under sentence

  650. of divine providence.

  651. That what both the avenger and the

  652. person who committed the crime is

  653. trusting in is that God will issue a

  654. just sentence. that whenever the high

  655. priest dies of natural causes, God will

  656. have determined at that point that it

  657. was time served. And so then he can be

  658. released at that point. Now what we

  659. understand is that the shedding of blood

  660. can only be atoned for by the shedding

  661. of man's blood. But instead of

  662. automatically requiring the death of the

  663. manslayer, God considered the natural

  664. death of the high priest

  665. as [snorts] atonement for the guilty.

  666. This is almost sort of like a jubilee

  667. for the guilty that when the high priest

  668. dies, all the guilty in all the cities

  669. go free. Just like the 50th year of

  670. Jubilee. That's the sense that you get

  671. here. And I just want to point out what

  672. a glorious picture that is of our

  673. redemption. The book of Hebrews chapters

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  674. 6 through8 paints Jesus number one as

  675. the refuge to whom we have fled in our

  676. guilt. We sang it in that first verse of

  677. how firm a foundation ye saints of the

  678. Lord has laid for your faith. It is

  679. excellent uh word. What more can he say

  680. than to you he had said who to Jesus for

  681. refuge have fled. That comes from

  682. Hebrews chapter 6 that Christ is our

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  683. place of refuge where we are protected

  684. from the guilt that comes upon us. But

  685. it is also according to Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  686. 7 and 8 that the death of our high

  687. priest is what sets us free from the

  688. guilt of our sin. And so we have a God's

  689. grace to us foreshadowed by his grace to

  690. the man's slayer in this very chapter.

  691. But I want you to notice in verse number

  692. 26 that it says, "But if the slayer

  693. shall at any time come without the

  694. border of the city of his refuge,

  695. whether he was fled, and the revenger of

  696. blood find him without the borders of

  697. the city of his refuge." And the

  698. revenger of blood killed the slayer. He

  699. shall not be guilty of blood because he

  700. should have remained in the city of his

  701. refuge until the death of the high

  702. priest.

  703. And so God warns here as well that this

  704. man must remain there. And if he leaves

  705. and the revenger of blood kills him, the

  706. revenger of blood will be free from

  707. guilt. Why? Because he despised the

  708. grace of God and left his refuge. He

  709. left his refuge.

  710. And so he says that after the death of

  711. the high priest, the slayer shall return

  712. to the pos land of his possessions. So

  713. these things shall be for a statute of

  714. judgment unto you throughout your

  715. generations in all your dwellings. Who

  716. so killleth any person, the murderer

  717. shall be put to death. But notice the

  718. final two instructions here from God.

  719. that first of all if a person is put to

  720. death it is only to be by the mouth of

  721. witness says there in verse 30 he says

  722. that that uh in verse in verse number 30

  723. but one witness shall not testify

  724. against any person to cause him to die

  725. and so that protects the individual from

  726. one false accusation leading to their

  727. death. Do do you see what God is doing

  728. here? He is instituting statutes that

  729. are intended to protect life.

  730. Whether we are talking about a a person

  731. who who has accidentally killed someone,

  732. he is still held culpable and

  733. responsible for it, but he is not put to

  734. death unnecessarily for it. He is

  735. protected by the congregation from the

  736. revenger of blood putting him to death

  737. when it was not murder. God even says

  738. that that even a a person who who is

  739. murdered who has murdered is only to be

  740. put to death if there is more than one

  741. witness lest there be false accusations.

  742. And so as you come through all of this,

  743. what it's communicating is that God

  744. establishes the congregation of Israel

  745. to be the guardians of human life.

  746. He says in verses 32 and verse uh in

  747. verse number 31 and verse 32 that no

  748. satisfaction, no ransom payment is to be

  749. accepted in exchange for the murderer's

  750. death or in exchange for the

  751. manslaughterers's city of refuge. That

  752. they are both to serve their sentence as

  753. God said with no ransom payment made.

  754. And so God is calling Israel to be the

  755. guardians of human life.

  756. They are to select the cities of refuge.

  757. They are to judge between the murderer

  758. and the manslayer. They are protect the

  759. manslayer until he reaches his city of

  760. refuge. They are to ensure that the

  761. avenger of blood puts the murderer to

  762. death and and that he clears him from

  763. the blood if he kills the manslayer who

  764. left the city of refuge. God wants his

  765. people to guard human life. The question

  766. is why? God gives two reasons here at

  767. the very end of the chapter. It says

  768. first of all in verse 33, "So ye shall

  769. not pollute the land wherein ye are. For

  770. the blood, for blood it defileth the

  771. land, and the land cannot be cleansed of

  772. [snorts] the blood that is shed therein,

  773. but by the blood of him that shed it."

  774. And so if one person ends a man's life,

  775. then someone else is to end that man's

  776. life. And this is a neverending cycle

  777. that if there's continuous murder and

  778. continuous manslaughter with no

  779. consequences, it's going to defile the

  780. land by the death of innocent blood. So

  781. God says, you're to guard human life.

  782. But I think the primary reason is here

  783. in verse 34.

  784. Defile not therefore the land which ye

  785. shall inhabit, wherein I dwell. For I,

  786. the Lord, dwell among the children of

  787. Israel.

  788. The Lord who lives in their midst is the

  789. Lord who gave human life. He alone can

  790. order the taking of human life because

  791. he alone gave it. The Lord is the one

  792. who made us in his image after his

  793. likeness. And because God values human

  794. life and because God dwells in their

  795. midst, he calls them to be the guardians

  796. of human life within their congregation.

  797. [snorts] Now, what does a text like this

  798. have to say to a congregation like ours?

  799. Because we're not a political kingdom.

  800. We are not a god orained justice system.

  801. We're not called to put people to death

  802. or to be uh vigilante avengers of blood.

  803. Nor is it our responsibility to harbor

  804. mansllayers in our homes and in our

  805. cities. That's not God's instruction to

  806. us. And so for us to understand what God

  807. has for us, we have to cut through the

  808. precise political implications to see

  809. the broader spiritual implications which

  810. I believe is this. God calls the people

  811. among whom he dwells to be guardians of

  812. human life.

  813. The people whom he dwells. [snorts] A

  814. church is a congregation of people in

  815. the midst of whom God dwells.

  816. [snorts] You see, Jesus told his

  817. disciples that when he departs, he was

  818. going to send a comforter, namely the

  819. Holy Ghost, who would dwell in us. But

  820. in the very same breath there in John

  821. 15, Jesus said, "I will dwell in them

  822. and the father will dwell in them." And

  823. what that means is if you're a bornagain

  824. believer, then dwelling within us both

  825. individually and corporately as a church

  826. is the triune God. The same God who

  827. dwelt in Israel's midst dwells with us.

  828. The church is called the temple of the

  829. living God. In the book of Revelation,

  830. Jesus is walking in the midst of his

  831. churches. And so we are a congregation

  832. among whom God dwells. And because God

  833. dwells with us, we too are called to be

  834. guardians of human life.

  835. But the question is, what does that look

  836. like for us today? Well, here in the

  837. United States in particular, this can

  838. carry some national and political

  839. implications.

  840. We have a unique opportunity to vote on

  841. governors and representatives who pass

  842. legislations, appoint judges, sign

  843. amendments and acts into law. And you

  844. you know how you can be a guardian of

  845. human life? You vote for the most

  846. pro-life judges, the most prolife

  847. governors, the most pro-life

  848. representatives. Whether we are talking

  849. about protecting the unborn or if we're

  850. talking about in general seeking justice

  851. on those who do wrong, that nobody who

  852. kills someone should be roaming the

  853. streets within a matter of months. And

  854. yet here we have much catch and release.

  855. Why do we have catch and release?

  856. Because for generations now we have

  857. appointed judges who don't protect life.

  858. because if they take a hard stance on

  859. protecting life, it can be political

  860. suicide.

  861. God has given us the ability to vote on

  862. that. And listen, as Christians here in

  863. a very deep blue, not just liberal, but

  864. socialistic state now, it can feel like

  865. it's hopeless. But listen, that does not

  866. absolve us our of our responsibility

  867. to let our voice be heard to ensure that

  868. we are putting our listen, we're not

  869. going to love every candidate and and

  870. and that's obvious, but we have a

  871. responsibility to protect human life to

  872. vote for those who who would do their

  873. best to do that. But you know what? We

  874. sometimes have the opportunity to vote

  875. against laws that devalue human life.

  876. And [snorts] I can remember years ago, I

  877. think I was fresh out of high school. It

  878. was one of the first elections that I

  879. could vote in here that there was an

  880. amendment called the Brady Amendment.

  881. And what had happened is a a somebody

  882. that I knew that attended a sister

  883. church in Frederick at Tritown Baptist

  884. Church. She had been pregnant and was

  885. hit by a drunk driver and it took the

  886. life of her baby. and they ruled that it

  887. was not a homicide nor was it a murder

  888. because of the death of that child. And

  889. so therefore, uh, she was able to work

  890. with political organizations to get

  891. petitions signed and to get it on the

  892. ballot to pass the Brady Amendment. And

  893. all that the Brady Amendment did was it

  894. presented the the opportunity to protect

  895. life in the womb in that particular

  896. instance. that if a drunk driver hit a

  897. pregnant woman and it took the life of

  898. that child, then the person could be

  899. charged with vehicular homicide. It was

  900. that specific of a law.

  901. And yet our state did not pass it. And

  902. [snorts] the reason why is because they

  903. knew if we recognize personhood in a

  904. child in that situation, we have to

  905. recognize personhood in all situations.

  906. And people chose their rights over

  907. protecting human life.

  908. We as believers have opportunities

  909. to vote for things like that that will

  910. protect human life. And unfortunately

  911. here in the state of Colorado, we may

  912. not win. But that should not deter us

  913. from casting our vote in favor of life.

  914. [snorts] We ought to do that.

  915. But it also could carry some

  916. implications into uh different public

  917. fields. I think of the fact that if you

  918. uh worked in the legal field, whether as

  919. a lawyer or as a judge, it would give

  920. you the responsibility to safeguard

  921. human life to the fullest extent that

  922. the law allows, whether it is for the

  923. guilty or the the victim. We see that in

  924. this text. Person is guilty of

  925. manslaughter. And yet, you're to protect

  926. that person's life as well. And so, we

  927. would have that opportunity. If you

  928. worked in law enforcement, you could

  929. view that as more than a job, but as a

  930. responsibility from God to protect uh

  931. human life as well. Uh it would be to to

  932. protect both the innocent and the guilty

  933. in that situation. This also implies

  934. that should and this is something that

  935. can be difficult for us to decipher as

  936. New Testament believers.

  937. But should your life or the life of

  938. someone you love be tragically taken,

  939. this means that you do not overlook

  940. culpability

  941. even out of a spirit of forgiveness.

  942. that listen, it may be that you have a

  943. sincere like I I just think of of an

  944. instance where if your kid was riding a

  945. bike and somebody was was not, you know,

  946. they're they're not paying attention or

  947. anything like that a but yet they take

  948. that child's life by hitting them with

  949. their car.

  950. You may forgive them.

  951. But what this shows us is that God calls

  952. us at the same time to ensure that life

  953. is protected, that life is guarded.

  954. And so that that means in that kind of

  955. situation that we do have a

  956. responsibility to report. We have a

  957. responsibility to go to the justice

  958. system and even in those instances to

  959. express perhaps the spirit of

  960. forgiveness of that person but also to

  961. recognize that I value life because my

  962. God values life and therefore judge I

  963. defer to you for what you would see to

  964. be a just sentence for this individual.

  965. That can be hard in this world that we

  966. know we're called to turn the cheek. But

  967. turn the cheek doesn't refer to the

  968. taking of life. [snorts]

  969. We've got a responsibility to be

  970. guardians of human life. God is a God of

  971. grace and forgiveness, but he is also a

  972. God who values life and justice.

  973. But now I'm going to take a turn

  974. [snorts] to something that might seem

  975. like a hot take initially.

  976. But I'm going to ask you to follow along

  977. with me. That this is not just true in

  978. the national political sphere, but it's

  979. also true spiritually within the church.

  980. That we are responsible not just to

  981. guard physical life, but also to guard

  982. spiritual life. Now, I don't think that

  983. any of us in here are guilty of murder.

  984. At least I don't know. If you are, you

  985. probably need to tell me. Um, I I don't

  986. even know that any of us are guilty of

  987. manslaughter in our lives. It it could

  988. be that somebody's been through that.

  989. But I also want to draw our attention to

  990. how the New Testament speaks not of

  991. physical murder, but of spiritual murder

  992. within the church.

  993. Let me give you a few things here.

  994. Number one, you can commit spiritual

  995. murder with your hatred.

  996. Listen [snorts] to the words of Jesus in

  997. Matthew 5:21. Ye have heard that it was

    Matthew 5:21

  998. said by them of old time, thou shalt not

  999. kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be

1000. in danger of the judgment. But I say

1001. unto you that whosoever is angry with

1002. his brother without a cause shall be in

  1003. danger of the judgment.

1004. Listen to what first John 3:15 says. He

    1 John 3:15

1005. that loveth not his brother abideth in

1006. death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a

  1007. murderer.

  1008. I didn't say that.

1009. The Bible says that. Now, that doesn't

1010. mean that you're literally killing

  1011. people,

1012. but with your hatred toward them,

1013. [clears throat] they're as good as dead

1014. to you. And Christ calls that spiritual

  1015. murder.

1016. And within a church family, we are

  1017. responsible

1018. to keep blood, so to speak, out of the

  1019. congregation.

1020. We're responsible to guard ourselves

1021. from hatred that we might have to

1022. somebody else because of their

1023. personality or because of how they may

1024. have hurt us. We're called not to murder

1025. them spiritually by our hatred. You can

1026. also destroy your brother or sister with

1027. your words. Listen to Galatians 5:15.

    Galatians 5:15

1028. But if you bite and devour one another,

1029. take heed that you be not consumed one

1030. another. That is in the context of how

1031. you talk to your brothers and sisters in

1032. Christ. He said there's potential to

1033. devour. What does that sound like?

  1034. Death.

1035. What about James 3:8? The tongue is an

    James 3:8

1036. unruly evil full of deadly poison. What

1037. does poison do? it kills.

1038. And so if we're to guard life, we can't

1039. hate our brothers and sisters in Christ.

1040. Nor can we weaponize our tongues against

  1041. them.

1042. But then the New Testament also says you

1043. can spiritually kill a Christian by

1044. violating their conscience. Listen to

1045. what Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  1046. 8 10 and 11. He's talking in the context

1047. of of eating meat offered to idols and

1048. and doing things that that your

1049. conscience may be strong enough to do

1050. something that's not strictly forbidden

1051. by God. But there may be someone else

1052. whose conscience is very sensitive to

1053. that and they they can't eat that

1054. particular thing or drink that

1055. particular thing. And so they they can't

1056. do that without violating their

1057. conscience. That's the context. He says

1058. this, listen to what he says. For if any

1059. man see thee which has knowledge, sit at

1060. meat in the idol's temple, shall not the

1061. conscience of him which is weak be

1062. emboldened to eat those things which are

1063. offered to idols? And through thy

1064. knowledge shall the weak brother, here's

1065. the word, perish for whom Christ died.

1066. He says that when you when your actions

1067. cause a brother or sister in Christ to

1068. violate their conscience, when you tell

1069. them something is okay to do, when the

1070. spirit of God has not led them that

1071. that's okay to do, he says you can cause

1072. your brother to spiritually speaking

1073. perish that it can destroy them. It can

1074. ruin them spiritually. Paul reiterates

1075. the same thing in Romans chapter 14

    Romans 14 chapter mention

1076. verse verse 15 where he says but if thy

1077. brother be grieved with thy meat now

1078. walkest thou not charitably. He says

1079. this destroy not him with thy meat for

  1080. whom Christ died.

1081. And so there are actually actions that

1082. we can take against our brothers and

1083. sisters in Christ that the Bible calls

  1084. perishing, murder, and destruction.

1085. But we're called to be the guardians of

1086. human life. Not just physically, but

1087. also spiritually. My mind went to Acts

    Acts 20 chapter mention

1088. chapter 20 when we talked about the

1089. elders of the church at Ephesus and how

1090. they were called to to guard the flock

1091. against wolves that would not spare the

1092. flock. You know what that means?

1093. Spiritually destroy them and ruin them.

1094. And so pastors that are unwilling to put

1095. out uh unbelievers that are causing

1096. havoc in the church or false prophets

1097. that are deceiving people in the church.

1098. If a pastor is unwilling to do that,

1099. he's not guarding the lives of God's

  1100. people.

1101. And so just as Israel was called to

1102. guard physical life within their

1103. congregation, we are also called to

1104. guard spiritual life within our

1105. congregation. How do we do that? Keep

1106. wolves out. Don't harbor hatred in your

1107. heart toward fellow Christians. Rather,

1108. be forgiving of them. Guard the

1109. conscience of your fellow believers.

1110. Watch your words toward one another.

1111. Why? Why should we care so much about

1112. the lives of of each other within a

1113. congregation? Well, it's for this simple

1114. reason. God dwells in our midst.

1115. God dwells in our midst.

1116. And [snorts] spiritual murder can defile

  1117. God's temple. Listen to 1 Corinthians

1118. chapter 3:16. Know ye not that you're

1119. the temple of God, and that the spirit

1120. of God dwelleth in you? If any man

1121. defile the temple of God, him shall God

1122. destroy. For the temple of God is holy,

  1123. which temple ye are.

1124. God dwells in our midst. And because God

1125. dwells in our midst, he calls us to be

  1126. guardians of life.

1127. God so valued our lives that he gave his

1128. only son to die on a cross to shed his

1129. blood for our sin. And he has invited us

1130. to flee to Christ for refuge.

1131. But he also gave his life to set us

  1132. free.

1133. That's how much God values your life and

1134. the lives of your fellow brothers and

1135. sisters in Christ. And because God

1136. valued our lives, we must do everything

1137. we can to be guardians of life, both in

1138. our earthly citizenship and in our

1139. heavenly citizenship. And so I encourage

  1140. you believer, don't defile God's

1141. dwelling place by being careless with

1142. lives for whom Christ died.

  1143. Rather, follow God's instructions.

1144. Guard human life in public, at home, and

1145. especially at church, knowing that a

1146. holy God dwells in our midst.

1147. If [snorts] you're here tonight or if

  1148. you're listening online and you're not a

1149. Christian, I would invite you tonight to

  1150. seek refuge in Christ,

1151. that he is a refuge to whom you can flee

1152. and be protected from God's wrath

1153. against your guilt, but he's also one

1154. who gave his life to set you free from

1155. it. And if you'll trust in him tonight,

1156. your sins can be forgiven and you can be

1157. set free from the guilt of your past.

1158. and you can receive an eternal

1159. inheritance with God as well. Church,

1160. let's be guardians of human life. Our

1161. father, we thank you for your word and

1162. for its truth and its warnings and

1163. instructions to us and how we need a

  1164. message like this

1165. to keep your dwelling place pure from

  1166. defilement,

1167. pure from hatred and anger. and death.

1168. And I pray that you would help us to

  1169. ponder in our hearts

1170. of how we look at human life

1171. both in the public square but also here

1172. within the church. I pray that we would

1173. care for life as much as you do. Would

1174. you help us to do just that? In Jesus

  1175. name I pray. Amen.
