  1. We'll take our Bibles and go to Numbers

    Numbers 33 chapter mention

  2. chapter 33.

  3. Numbers 33, once you found your place

  4. there, you can stand as we read and

  5. give honor to God's word.

  6. We're coming down to the final

  7. instructions of God. This series has

  8. been entitled God's way in life's

  9. wilderness and

  10. I guess what you might call the main

  11. idea of this entire book is that God

  12. instructs Israel in his ways as he leads

  13. them through the wilderness to Canaan

  14. despite their failures. That's a loaded

  15. statement because man fails, but God

  16. remains faithful and patient and teaches

  17. and instructs us in his ways if we would

  18. but hear his voice. And now as we come

  19. to his final instructions, he's

  20. preparing them to enter the promised

  21. land and preparing them for life in the

  22. promised land. We saw last week the fact

  23. that how you got here is how you get

  24. home and that's by God's grace and

  25. through faith in him and

  26. uh then as we come to chapter 34 next

  27. week, God's going to give them a little

  28. taste of the future by showing them the

  29. borders of what their inheritance will

  30. be. But in between these two is our text

  31. tonight which is a clear command from

  32. God to them beginning in verse number

  33. 50. Numbers 33 verse 50.

    Numbers 33:50

  34. And the Lord spake in Moses in the

  35. plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho

  36. saying, "Speak unto the children of

  37. Israel and say unto them, When you are

  38. passed over Jordan into the land of

  39. Canaan,

  40. then you shall drive out all the

  41. inhabitants of the land from before you

  42. and destroy all their pictures and

  43. destroy all their molten images and and

  44. pluck down all their high places. And ye

  45. shall dispossess the inhabitants of the

  46. land and dwell therein. For I have given

  47. you the land to possess it. And ye shall

  48. divide the land by lot for an

  49. inheritance among your families. And to

  50. the more ye shall give the more

  51. inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall

  52. give the less inheritance. Every man's

  53. inheritance shall be in the place where

  54. his lot falleth, according to the tribes

  55. of your fathers ye shall inherit. But,

  56. if ye will not drive out the inhabitants

  57. of the land from before you,

  58. then it shall come to pass that those

  59. which you let remain of them shall be

  60. pricks in your eyes and thorns in your

  61. sides, and shall vex you in the land

  62. wherein you dwell.

  63. Moreover, it shall come to pass that I

  64. shall do unto you as I thought to do

  65. unto them. I'm going to preach tonight

  66. on the subject, The Troublesome End of

  67. Living With Sin. The Troublesome End of

  68. Living With Sin. May God bless his word.

  69. You can be seated and we'll get into our

  70. message.

  71. >> [snorts]

  72. >> We have recently learned

  73. >> [sighs]

  74. >> that our home has been invaded by

  75. spiders.

  76. We have about all of us woken up in the

  77. morning with bites on our legs, our

  78. arms, our necks, or wherever. Uh the

  79. other day, Jenna felt something crawling

  80. on her leg, and she captured that little

  81. spider and showed it to me, and that's

  82. the life we're living right now. I've

  83. seen them climbing on the walls, near

  84. the baseboards, in the bathtub. I've

  85. I've washed a spider down the drain,

  86. only to come back an hour later, and the

  87. itty-bitty spider climbed up the drain

  88. again.

  89. Saw that as well.

  90. >> [snorts]

  91. >> It's creepy to know these things are

  92. lurking in our home every single night

  93. as we go to sleep and that they'll be

  94. crawling all over me without me even

  95. realizing it.

  96. And of course, we all know of the tale

  97. that you swallow eight spiders in your

  98. lifetime, I think it is.

  99. But spiders irritate you, they scare

  100. you, they bite you, and if the wrong one

  101. gets you, it can even kill you. Brown

  102. recluse,

  103. black widow,

  104. those guys that are in the army in the

  105. Middle East, they come across those

  106. camel spiders. Have you seen those

  107. pictures of them holding them out like

  108. this and ah,

  109. no, thank you.

  110. >> [snorts]

  111. >> When your home is under invasion,

  112. you have one of two choices.

  113. Live comfortably with them

  114. or kill them.

  115. And where I'm at is I'm ready to get the

  116. smoke bombs and bomb those suckers out

  117. of our home.

  118. I don't know many people who are content

  119. to live comfortably in a home full of

  120. spiders.

  121. But it seems that many Christians are

  122. content to live comfortably with their

  123. sin.

  124. Much like spiders, sin can invade your

  125. life.

  126. It can breed other sins and spread

  127. throughout your home, and it can bite

  128. you, and if deadly, can even kill you.

  129. Sin is deadly.

  130. Can I just ask tonight without accusing,

  131. ask for some self-examination.

  132. How comfortable are you

  133. living with the lust in your heart?

  134. The constant diving into the impurities

  135. of the internet or social media.

  136. Have you grown

  137. comfortable living in sexual sin?

  138. Has it become so common to you that you

  139. don't even resist anymore?

  140. >> [snorts]

  141. >> Have you grown comfortable with your

  142. anger?

  143. Does it seem like it's no big deal? Do

  144. you treat it like it's just who you are

  145. and that you'll never change?

  146. Have you grown so comfortable with the

  147. perversions of society that everything

  148. is just a joke now?

  149. Do you tolerate filthy communication as

  150. the Bible calls it?

  151. Profanity or using God's name in vain?

  152. >> [snorts]

  153. >> Have you grown

  154. so comfortable with materialistic

  155. idolatry called covetousness

  156. to where you're always pursuing what you

  157. don't have?

  158. Are you comfortable with the sin of

  159. discontentment?

  160. >> [snorts]

  161. >> You see, when we reach a point where we

  162. are calling these small sins

  163. or little white lies or just a quick

  164. glance,

  165. I'm concerned that we have grown too

  166. comfortable

  167. living with sin.

  168. >> [snorts]

  169. >> When it comes to sin in your life,

  170. you have two choices.

  171. Let it stay

  172. or drive it out.

  173. And that's the choice that Israel is

  174. faced with as they come into the

  175. promised land.

  176. God promised to give them the land of

  177. Canaan,

  178. but to take possession of the land,

  179. they've got to first dispossess the

  180. inhabitants of the land, namely the

  181. Canaanites.

  182. The Canaanites have already been

  183. condemned under God's judgment for their

  184. immoral practices, their idolatry, their

  185. child sacrifice, and what God is doing

  186. is he is using Israel to judge them.

  187. While [snorts] God instructs them to

  188. kill all the men in battle, he tells

  189. them here that they need to drive out

  190. the inhabitants of the land.

  191. That he says, "Don't live with the

  192. Canaanites.

  193. Don't get comfortable around their

  194. practices and around their worship, but

  195. to be they he they are called to drive

  196. them out and to destroy it all."

  197. Now, you and I do not wage holy war

  198. against nations,

  199. but we are called to wage a holy war

  200. against sin in our lives.

  201. Why can't we get comfortable

  202. living with sin?

  203. Why is it important for us to put sin

  204. to death, as the Bible says, to drive it

  205. out and to destroy it from our lives?

  206. And it's for the same reason that God

  207. instructs Israel to drive out the

  208. Canaanites in this text.

  209. God brought Israel out of Egypt into

  210. Canaan for a redemptive purpose.

  211. A redemptive purpose.

  212. I first once again want to point out the

  213. literary context on both sides of this

  214. text. We covered last week that Moses

  215. recorded the journeys of Israel, their

  216. journey from Egypt to Jordan, where they

  217. are on the banks of the promised land.

  218. And on the other side, chapter 34, is

  219. the tracing of the boundaries of their

  220. inheritance. And so, if you get the

  221. picture here, Moses has this account

  222. sandwiched between where God's brought

  223. them from and where God's bringing them

  224. to.

  225. And what this text does is it reminds

  226. them that God did not bring them out of

  227. Egypt and into Canaan so that they could

  228. live with the Canaanites.

  229. That's not what it was about.

  230. Rather, God brought them out to redeem

  231. them from bondage.

  232. He didn't want them to He didn't bring

  233. them out of the idolatry of Egypt and

  234. the oppression of Egypt just to bring

  235. them to Canaan where they could practice

  236. the idolatry of the Canaanites and be

  237. oppressed by the Canaanites. That was

  238. not God's plan and so the Lord commands

  239. them here to drive them out. It says in

  240. verse number 15, the Lord spake unto

  241. Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan

  242. near Jericho. We see this repeated

  243. throughout this book as they have

  244. reached the final leg of their journey.

  245. That they're in the plains of Moab.

  246. They are by Jordan. They're beside the

  247. Jordan River and they're near Jericho.

  248. Jericho is the first city that they

  249. conquer in the promised land. What all

  250. of this is telling us is they are almost

  251. there.

  252. But before they can go in and conquer,

  253. they need to heed God's instruction and

  254. God's instruction to them here is in

  255. verse 51, "Speak unto the children of

  256. Israel and say unto them, when you are

  257. passed over Jordan into the land of

  258. Canaan, then you shall drive out all the

  259. inhabitants of the land before you and

  260. destroy all their pictures and destroy

  261. all their molten images and quite pluck

  262. down all their high places and you shall

  263. dispossess the inhabitants of the land

  264. and dwell there in for I have given you

  265. the land to possess it." He tells them

  266. to drive them out and dispossess it.

  267. Those are the same exact Hebrew word.

  268. The idea is to take possession by

  269. dispossession.

  270. What exactly is God talking about? I

  271. want you to imagine with me for a moment

  272. that you own a home and you've been

  273. renting it out to some renters for quite

  274. some time. But the time comes when

  275. you're ready to pass that home on to

  276. your son or daughter as an inheritance.

  277. And so you give them the keys, but

  278. there's a problem. The renters won't

  279. leave.

  280. They've become squatters at this point.

  281. And your plan when you give that home to

  282. your son or daughter is not for them to

  283. move in with the squatters and just kind

  284. of settle in with them. No, you've got

  285. to evict them.

  286. And that's the idea of what God is

  287. talking about here. He has a land of

  288. inheritance that he wants to give to his

  289. firstborn son as he called them back in

  290. Egypt, the nation of Israel. But the

  291. problem is right now is there is a

  292. wicked people dwelling in the land and

  293. God says, "I don't want you to just go

  294. in the land into the land and live among

  295. the Canaanites and learn their practices

  296. and and become a part of their system."

  297. No, you need to drive them out. You need

  298. to destroy their sculptures and destroy

  299. their idols of gold and silver and you

  300. need to knock down their their

  301. mountainous high places where they

  302. worship their gods and offer their

  303. children as sacrifices. All of that

  304. needs to be brought down and destroyed.

  305. Why?

  306. God didn't bring them out of Egypt for

  307. them to live amongst the Canaanites.

  308. He says, "Here's the keys.

  309. Now go and dispossess them.

  310. Go and drive them out and take

  311. possession of the land that I am giving

  312. you." God brought Israel out for a

  313. redemptive purpose, to free them from

  314. bondage to Egypt, to separate them as a

  315. holy nation that can display the glory

  316. of God to the heathen around them that

  317. they too might believe that the Lord, he

  318. is God.

  319. Is that not what we've seen in Exodus,

  320. Leviticus, and Numbers?

  321. It's God's purpose for them.

  322. But can I also tell you

  323. that God's redemptive purpose for them

  324. is God's redemptive purpose for you?

  325. That God sent his son to pay the price

  326. for your sin to bring you out of bondage

  327. to sin. That you would not live under

  328. its reign and its dominion any longer,

  329. but that you would be freed from it.

  330. He did not free you from sin so that you

  331. could live comfortably with your sin.

  332. That wasn't his plan.

  333. He redeemed you from it by the blood of

  334. Christ. He freed you from the tomb of

  335. sin by the power of his resurrection. He

  336. freed you from your flesh and from the

  337. dominion of Satan so that you would no

  338. longer live there.

  339. Just so you'd be free.

  340. He separated you

  341. to be part of his chosen people and he's

  342. called you to display his glory to the

  343. lost around us so that they might

  344. believe on his son and become part of

  345. his people as well.

  346. You've been saved for a redemptive

  347. purpose.

  348. And listen, when God saves you, he calls

  349. you by his spirit to mortify the deeds

  350. of your flesh. Mortify means to put to

  351. death. To drive it out.

  352. See, when

  353. when I want you to listen to some of the

  354. things that Paul calls believers in

  355. Colossians to mortify.

  356. Fornication, uncleanliness, inordinate

  357. affection, evil concupiscence. Those are

  358. all big words for all forms of sexual

  359. immorality and purity.

  360. He speaks about mortifying covetousness,

  361. which he calls idolatry.

  362. He says, "You need to put off. You need

  363. to mortify anger, wrath, maliciousness,

  364. blasphemy, filthy communication, and

  365. lying." He mentions all those things. To

  366. the Ephesians, he calls them to put off

  367. theft, bitterness, slander, rioting, and

  368. violence. I mean, there's a lot of sin

  369. that the scripture calls us to put off,

  370. to put to death in our lives, and to

  371. drive out of our lives. And I'm

  372. concerned

  373. that we have become so scared of being

  374. legalistic that many churches refuse to

  375. preach about our responsibility

  376. to drive out sin from our lives.

  377. A lot of times the gospel that is

  378. preached today is simply the fact that

  379. God's going to do all the work for you.

  380. But in the Bible, we actually see God

  381. working with us to rid us of sin.

  382. You see, because some might say, "Well,

  383. only God can do that." And that is that

  384. is partly true, but I would say to you

  385. that God already has done and is

  386. continuing to do his role in your life.

  387. He sent his son to pay for your sin, to

  388. break the chains of sin, to renew your

  389. heart. He gave you his spirit who causes

  390. you to walk in his ways, but God works

  391. by his spirit with your will, which is

  392. why Paul calls believers

  393. to mortify the deeds of their flesh.

  394. It's why he calls them to put off the

  395. filthy rags of unrighteousness that we

  396. just mentioned here. Why would Paul call

  397. believers to do something that they

  398. cannot do at all?

  399. No, we see God working with fallen man

  400. to demonstrate his spirit's power to

  401. enable us to do what we could not do

  402. without him.

  403. But it doesn't leave us without

  404. responsibility, and I believe this is

  405. consistent

  406. in the scripture and particularly with

  407. our text.

  408. Because you might Well, you probably

  409. don't remember, but back back in Exodus

  410. 23, it's been a long time ago,

  411. God promised that he would send the

  412. hornets

  413. ahead of Israel.

  414. And that the hornets would drive out the

  415. inhabitants of the land. And And And I

  416. went back and read Exodus 23 today. Time

  417. after time after time, God says, "I will

  418. drive them out. I will drive them out. I

  419. will drive them out." But, in the very

  420. same paragraph, he says, "Thou shalt

  421. drive them out."

  422. See, God doesn't come into you and just

  423. remove all of your sinful desires and

  424. remove all of your flesh right now. No,

  425. what we are in right now is what we

  426. might call the wilderness of life. We're

  427. not yet in the land of rest where sin is

  428. eradicated, where our flesh is totally

  429. gone. No, right now we are in a testing

  430. period where God's spirit is working

  431. with our will to purify us and to

  432. conform us to the image of Jesus Christ.

  433. And therefore, we can't just sit back

  434. and expect, "Well, God's just going to

  435. clean up all my life." No, God convicts

  436. you,

  437. and you must choose to drive sin out of

  438. your life.

  439. It's what God calls Israel to do. It's

  440. what God calls us to do. He enables us

  441. by his power, but he also calls us to

  442. own our responsibility to drive out sin.

  443. Maybe we could put it this way. Our

  444. Father has given us the keys to the

  445. house in his son and in his spirit, but

  446. he calls us to evict sin with what he's

  447. given us.

  448. Now, the question is, why?

  449. Why must we drive sin

  450. out of our lives

  451. just as God called Israel to drive out

  452. the Canaanites?

  453. Well, in the last couple of verses here,

  454. beginning of verse 55,

  455. God warns Israel that if they let the

  456. Canaanites stay,

  457. it will make them pay.

  458. Would you look at verse 55?

  459. "But if we will not But if you will not

  460. drive out the inhabitants of the land

  461. from before you, then it shall come to

  462. pass that those which you let remain of

  463. them shall be pricks in your eyes and

  464. thorns in your side, and shall vex you

  465. in the land wherein you dwell.

  466. >> [snorts]

  467. >> Now, I have stepped on some goat heads

  468. in my life,

  469. and I have even stepped on some nails in

  470. my life,

  471. but I have never taken a goat head or a

  472. nail in the eye.

  473. I can't imagine that is comfortable in

  474. any way whatsoever.

  475. God says, "If you let these nations

  476. stay,

  477. do you catch that?

  478. If you let them remain, if you let them

  479. stay, if you live comfortably with them,

  480. if you do not drive them out, then they

  481. will be like pricks in your eyes and

  482. thorns in your sides, and they will vex

  483. you." The word vex means to treat with

  484. hostility. They'll treat you as an

  485. enemy.

  486. This is how it works. If you let them

  487. live, and you let them stay, they will

  488. not reciprocate the same kindness to you

  489. that you showed to them.

  490. That's what he's telling them.

  491. They're going to rise up against you.

  492. But, here's a particular reason why.

  493. Because they will continue to worship

  494. their gods.

  495. And they will continue to practice their

  496. immorality,

  497. their idolatry. They will continue to

  498. burn incense in their high places, and

  499. they will teach you the ways of Canaan,

  500. is what God warns in other places. He

  501. said that they will be a snare. They'll

  502. be like a bear trap to you that will

  503. snag hold of you and pull you back. The

  504. warning here is that just like we saw

  505. with the golden calf at Mount Sinai, and

  506. just like we saw with the Midianites,

  507. Israel's heart will be turned toward

  508. those who are living among them, and

  509. they will learn their ways and walk in

  510. their ways, and the result is they will

  511. treat them with hostility and attack

  512. them in the process.

  513. But, then you have this in verse 56 that

  514. will bring them also

  515. under the discipline of God.

  516. Moreover, it shall come to pass that I

  517. shall do unto you

  518. as I thought to do unto them.

  519. See, God's judgment against the

  520. Canaanites

  521. is not because they were Canaanites.

  522. This is not an ethnic cleansing because

  523. God hates a people group.

  524. These people were wicked.

  525. And no one ought to find themselves on

  526. the side of defending child sacrificers

  527. and and and people who practice I mean

  528. unspeakable forms of of immorality.

  529. God says if my people

  530. begin to practice their ways,

  531. I will judge them

  532. as I am judging this people now.

  533. It'll bring God's discipline.

  534. >> [snorts]

  535. >> See, God told Israel to drive out the

  536. Canaanites

  537. because if they let them stay,

  538. it'll make them pay.

  539. They will pay the price.

  540. They will be judged. They will fall

  541. under God's discipline. They

  542. will end up with these pricks and thorns

  543. vexing them.

  544. And so I say to you that for the very

  545. same reason, you've got to drive sin out

  546. of your life.

  547. Why?

  548. If you let it stay,

  549. it'll make you pay.

  550. >> [snorts]

  551. >> You won't lose your salvation.

  552. That's already bought and paid for for

  553. by the blood of Jesus Christ.

  554. But nevertheless,

  555. sin has serious consequences

  556. to pay.

  557. We can be brought under the discipline

  558. of our heavenly Father.

  559. Where he allows judgment in our lives or

  560. he perhaps just allows us to go our own

  561. way until it ruins and destroys us. Why

  562. does he do that? Because he loves us and

  563. he wants to correct us and he wants to

  564. turn us back to him.

  565. See, when you live comfortably with

  566. sinful and selfish anger, it can quickly

  567. turn into a wildfire that burns your

  568. life to the ground.

  569. Your temper can cause you to lose your

  570. job.

  571. Your Your verbal abuse of your wife can

  572. beat her down to the desperate spot

  573. where it ends your marriage, destroys

  574. it.

  575. When anger makes itself at home in your

  576. life,

  577. it can even lead you to lay your hands

  578. on your kids

  579. or on your wife.

  580. Sin

  581. is brutal.

  582. It's an attacker.

  583. It festers. It spreads in your life.

  584. It brings you to ruin.

  585. What about bitterness?

  586. Is bitterness really a sin?

  587. It's something Paul said you need to put

  588. off.

  589. See, the Bible calls bitterness

  590. a root.

  591. What is a root?

  592. A root

  593. is underneath the surface,

  594. buried, where no one can see.

  595. But when it is fed, it sprouts forth

  596. with a trunk and leaves and fruits.

  597. This bitterness

  598. can become so deeply rooted in your

  599. life, it can become very difficult to

  600. uproot from your life.

  601. >> [snorts]

  602. >> And what can happen

  603. is before you know it, that hurt from

  604. your past,

  605. that painful experience, that deep

  606. betrayal that you experienced, it can it

  607. it can lead you to uh being a very

  608. skeptical, cynical, and critical person

  609. of everyone around you.

  610. It can lead you to uh a person who has

  611. very deep-rooted anger issues, a lack of

  612. empathy and compassion toward others,

  613. an inability to rejoice with others.

  614. It can poison your relationship.

  615. It can

  616. It can embitter your your bitterness

  617. toward God can embitter your husband, it

  618. can embitter your wife and your children

  619. toward God as well, and you certainly

  620. don't feel like walking with God in

  621. those moments.

  622. You don't feel like reading His word or

  623. praying or or worshipping Him at church.

  624. Bitterness is a spreading thorn in your

  625. side that vexes your soul

  626. if you live comfortably with it.

  627. >> [snorts]

  628. >> What about lust?

  629. When you treat it like it's no big deal

  630. because everybody has done it, and it

  631. can poison your mind to where you can't

  632. look at a woman, not even in church,

  633. without a lustful thought.

  634. It can poison your marriage and perhaps

  635. even end it

  636. as it continues to spread and breed

  637. other sins in your life.

  638. You can find yourself caught up in a web

  639. of lies

  640. that gets so out of control

  641. that when it blows up, nobody can trust

  642. anything

  643. you say.

  644. So, do we understand

  645. the danger

  646. of getting comfortable

  647. with sin?

  648. When you let it stay,

  649. it makes you pay.

  650. Whether it's the

  651. the natural fallout of the consequences

  652. of your sin,

  653. or if it is the direct discipline that

  654. God brings in your life,

  655. that's the effect sin can have on you.

  656. It's a destructive

  657. force,

  658. and it brings you under God's

  659. discipline. Therefore, you must drive it

  660. out.

  661. Drive it out.

  662. Put it to death.

  663. Rid your life of it.

  664. Bury it 6 ft under.

  665. Pluck it down, destroy it, exterminate

  666. it. Whatever kind of verb that God uses

  667. here, he's saying you need to obliterate

  668. sin from your life. And you say, "Well,

  669. how in the world can I possibly do

  670. that?" God has broken you free from the

  671. chains of sin through his son.

  672. This is why Paul could say in Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  673. chapter 6, "Let not sin therefore reign

  674. in your mortal body that you should obey

  675. it in the lust thereof." It's not your

  676. captain. It's not your king anymore. If

  677. you choose to sin, you have no excuse

  678. other than you followed the desires of

  679. your heart.

  680. You have no excuse other than to say, "I

  681. sat comfortably in my sin. I was content

  682. to let it live there with me and get up

  683. close to me on the couch and to just let

  684. it roam through my home and and roam

  685. through my heart and do what it wants to

  686. do."

  687. It was your own choice. Why? How can I I

  688. possibly know that? Cuz Christ has made

  689. you free.

  690. Christ made you free.

  691. How do I rid my life of sin? How do I

  692. drive it out? Well, let me just say that

  693. first of all, you need to come clean

  694. about sin in your life.

  695. Continuing to pretend

  696. like it's not there

  697. will allow it to just continue to be a

  698. thorn in your eye.

  699. Prick in your side.

  700. >> [snorts]

  701. >> You can repent. You can confess. You can

  702. forsake that sin by the grace of God.

  703. You can experience his forgiveness

  704. and his enabling grace.

  705. Then you need to draw from the provision

  706. of his strength

  707. in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  708. If you've been comfortable living with

  709. sin,

  710. you need to pray more.

  711. >> [snorts]

  712. >> Because a consistent prayer life

  713. will not allow sin to fester

  714. in your life.

  715. It will allow not allow it to breed

  716. further sin in your life

  717. because your close contact with God will

  718. eventually bring you to a place where

  719. you know the sin stands between you and

  720. him.

  721. Where you know if you're allowing sin to

  722. root take root in your life that you

  723. can't genuinely come before God without

  724. being a hypocrite and act like

  725. everything is just fine. No, if you will

  726. spend more time in prayer and in close

  727. communion and fellowship with God, your

  728. close proximity will with him will begin

  729. to drive sin out of your life. You need

  730. to spend more time with the Lord.

  731. You might need to take drastic measures

  732. if necessary.

  733. Get counseling.

  734. Read a book about your particular sin.

  735. Get off social media or off the internet

  736. all together if that's what it takes for

  737. you to be free.

  738. If that's what it takes for you to

  739. display God's glory to your family, you

  740. need to you need to go to work with

  741. God's help and with the Holy Spirit on

  742. that anger that's deeply rooted in your

  743. heart. And yes, you may consider it to

  744. be generational because your dad was mad

  745. and your grandma was mad and and you

  746. have a history of anger and violence in

  747. your family. Listen, you can continue to

  748. let those things be an excuse for your

  749. anger or you can trust and obey God's

  750. word and accept the fact that the

  751. problem is not in what your parents did

  752. and who they were, but the problem is

  753. that your heart is not surrendered and

  754. submitted to God and his word.

  755. You've got to be real with yourself

  756. and acknowledge that the sin is wrong.

  757. That God's power can bring victory in

  758. your life.

  759. God would not call us

  760. to drive out and mortify sin

  761. if he did not enable us to do just that.

  762. You've got to trust him.

  763. Many of us are okay knowing

  764. spiders are in the house.

  765. Long as I don't see them.

  766. As long as they're not crawling on me

  767. and I don't feel them,

  768. I'm okay.

  769. But your own you might even say I can

  770. live with a few a few bites in that

  771. case.

  772. But only

  773. until you get the bite

  774. that finally kills you.

  775. >> [snorts]

  776. >> Many Christians are okay living with

  777. their sin.

  778. As [snorts] long as no one sees it, as

  779. long as no one finds out, I'll be good.

  780. But the problem is you never know when

  781. that particular sin will bite you that

  782. leads to your destruction.

  783. Drive it out.

  784. Don't let sin stay

  785. lest it make you pay.

  786. >> [snorts]

  787. >> But of course, without Christ, you'll

  788. never

  789. win the victory over sin.

  790. >> [snorts]

  791. >> It will dominate you.

  792. It will ensnare you and enslave you. It

  793. will be your king

  794. until you have a new king.

  795. See, in the if you die in your sin

  796. without Christ, you will perish

  797. in eternal destruction in hell.

  798. But when you trust in the finished work

  799. of Jesus on the cross,

  800. when you believe on him,

  801. you call upon His name and He saves your

  802. soul and redeems you out of that

  803. bondage. He breaks those chains of sin

  804. and he gives you his Holy Spirit who

  805. renews your heart and renews your mind.

  806. And friend, you can discover a whole new

  807. power that you never had before to drive

  808. drugs out of your life and to drive

  809. alcohol out of your life and to drive

  810. porn out of your life and bitterness and

  811. anger and gossip and every single sin

  812. that you've always struggled with your

  813. entire life. It can come to an end

  814. through Jesus Christ if you will believe

  815. on him.

  816. If you have believed on him,

  817. there's really no excuse

  818. for our sin.

  819. It's time to just confess it,

  820. repent, forsake it, and draw from his

  821. strength

  822. to drive out sin

  823. so that we don't have to pay

  824. the cost of its consequences.

  825. I encourage you with the power of Christ

  826. and the help of his Holy Spirit drive

  827. out sin.

  828. Heavenly Father,

  829. I thank you for your enabling grace

  830. and the strength that you wield in our

  831. lives [music] to break

  832. us free from these shackles of sin.

  833. Thank you for the gift of eternal life

  834. and the grace that you show to us when

  835. we repent

  836. and seek your forgiveness.

  837. And I want to pray for your people

  838. tonight

  839. that they would not

  840. be comfortably at home

  841. with sin.

  842. That they would recognize,

  843. believe, and accept the reality that you

  844. brought them out of it to free them from

  845. it.

  846. And I pray that they would seek your

  847. face,

  848. find forgiveness,

  849. and move forward

  850. from this sin that seemingly has them

  851. bound. [music] Help them, oh Lord, to

  852. experience freedom in Christ.

  853. And I pray for those who do not yet know

  854. the power [music] of Jesus.

  855. I pray that they would believe

  856. in his death and resurrection

  857. as the

  858. >> [music]

  859. >> solution

  860. to their problem.

  861. That they would believe, trust, call

  862. upon his name even tonight.

  863. God, I've already said it once tonight,

  864. but I'll say it again. Our eyes are upon

  865. you because we recognize that

  866. driving out [music] the sin in our lives

  867. can only be done with your help.

  868. And so we ask for it tonight in Jesus'

  869. name.

  870. Amen.
