  1. You can remain standing. Take your

    Acts 22 chapter mention

  3. chapter 22.

  4. Acts chapter 22 will be our text this

    Acts 22 chapter mention

  5. morning.

  6. We're in a series for our guests and new

  7. folks. We've been in a series for over a

  8. year now. We're in sermon number 53

  9. through the book of Acts. And uh we've

  10. gone verse by verse, paragraph by

  11. paragraph, and seen the spread of the

  12. gospel. The main idea that Luke wants to

  13. get across is that Christ's work

  14. continued by his spirit through his

  15. witnesses from Jerusalem to Rome. And

  16. we've been on that journey here through

  17. the book of Acts and we have embarked on

  18. the final section which is Paul's

  19. testimony before the people of Israel,

  20. the council at Jerusalem,

  21. Roman kings and governors and eventually

  22. we'll end up at Rome in his appeal to

  23. Caesar. We saw last week Paul's or last

  24. time I guess a couple weeks ago now that

  25. Paul was arrested in Jerusalem. He was

  26. falsely accused of teaching the Jews to

  27. abandon the law of Moses, of speaking

  28. against the Jews, of speaking against

  29. the temple. He was accused of bringing

  30. an Ephesian gentile man into the inner

  31. court of the temple.

  32. And he was misidentified as an Egyptian

  33. assassin by the Roman tribune.

  34. And so Paul has had a case of mistaken

  35. identity and false accusations. And now

  36. he is requesting from the chief captain

  37. of the Roman guard that he could speak

  38. to the people, the mob that had just

  39. arrested and ruthlessly beaten him. And

  40. if you'll look at verse 40, our text

  41. this morning will be from chapter 22:es

  42. 1- 22. But I want to begin in chapter

  43. 21:40.

  44. It says, "And when he had given him

  45. license, Paul stood on the stairs and

  46. beckoned with the hand unto the people.

  47. And when there was made a great silence,

  48. he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue,

  49. saying,"Men and brethren, fathers, hear

  50. ye my defense, which I make now unto

  51. you." And when they heard that he had

  52. spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they

  53. kept the more silence. And he saith, I

  54. am barely a man which am a Jew, born in

  55. Tarsus, a city in Cissia, yet brought up

  56. in this city at the feet of Galiel, and

  57. taught according to the perfect manner

  58. of the law of of the fathers, and was

  59. zealous toward God, as ye all are this

  60. day. And I persecuted this way unto the

  61. death, binding and delivering into

  62. prisons both men and women. And as also

  63. the high priest doth bear me witness,

  64. and all the estate of the elders, from

  65. whom also I received letters unto the

  66. brethren, and went to Damascus, bring

  67. them which were there bound unto

  68. Jerusalem for to be punished. And it

  69. came to pass that as I made my journey

  70. and was come nigh into Damascus about

  71. noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a

  72. great light round about me. And I fell

  73. into the ground and heard a voice saying

  74. unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest

  75. thou me? And I answered, Who art thou,

  76. Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of

  77. Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And

  78. they that were with me saw indeed the

  79. light, and were afraid, but they heard

  80. not the voice of him that spake to me.

  81. And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And

  82. the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go

  83. into Damascus, and there it shall be

  84. told thee of all things which are

  85. appointed for thee to do. And when I

  86. could not see for the glory of that

  87. light, being led by the hand of them

  88. that were with me, I came into Damascus,

  89. and one Ananas, a devout man according

  90. to the law, having a good report of all

  91. the Jews which dwelt there, came unto

  92. me, and stood and said unto me, Brother

  93. Saul, receive thy sight. And the same

  94. hour I looked upon him, and he said, The

  95. God of our fathers hath chosen thee,

  96. that thou shouldest know his will, and

  97. see that just one, and shouldest hear

  98. the voice of his mouth. For thou shalt

  99. be his witness unto all men of what thou

  100. hast seen and heard. And now, why,

  101. terest thou? Arise and be baptized and

  102. wash away thy sins, calling on the name

  103. of the Lord. And it came to pass that

  104. when I was come again to Jerusalem, even

  105. while I prayed in the temple, I was in a

  106. trance, and saw him, saying unto me,

  107. Make haste, and get thee quickly out of

  108. Jerusalem, for they will not receive thy

  109. testimony concerning me. And I said,

  110. Lord, they know that I imprisoned and

  111. beat in every synagogue them that

  112. believed on thee. And when the blood of

  113. thy martyr Steven was shed, I was also

  114. standing by and consenting unto his

  115. death, and kept the raignment of them

  116. that slew him. And he said unto me,

  117. Depart, for I will send thee far hence

  118. unto the Gentiles. And they gave him

  119. audience unto this word. and then lifted

  120. up their voices and said, "Away with

  121. such a fellow from the earth, for it is

  122. not fit that he should live."

  123. As Paul gives his defense of his

  124. ministry for Jesus,

  125. I want to preach to you a message

  126. entitled A Trustworthy

  127. Witness. A trustworthy witness. Let's

  128. pray. Our heavenly father, we ask for

  129. the help of your holy spirit to

  130. understand the truth of your word. May

  131. he shine the light of truth upon this

  132. scripture. And I pray that you would use

  133. it to solidify

  134. our faith in what we know and believe.

  135. And I pray that it would convince the

  136. lost of their need of Christ. In Jesus

  137. name I pray. Amen. Thank you for

  138. standing in honor of God's word. You may

  139. be seated.

  140. Today all of us are seated in a jury box

  141. in a courtroom in Jerusalem.

  142. Paul the Roman c or the Roman captain is

  143. seated as the judge. And over here you

  144. have somebody representing the people of

  145. Jerusalem.

  146. On this side, you have Paul, an apostle

  147. of Jesus Christ.

  148. He's been ruthlessly beaten by a mob,

  149. chained and carried away before the

  150. judge who identifies him as an Egyptian

  151. assassin.

  152. He's been accused of speaking against

  153. the Jewish people. An accusation of

  154. anti-semitism.

  155. You might say that he speaks against the

  156. Bible. He speaks against the temple of

  157. God. He's charged with even polluting

  158. the temple by bringing this Ephesian man

  159. into the inner court. He's known for

  160. preaching throughout Jerusalem and the

  161. Roman Empire that Jesus of Nazareth is

  162. the Jewish Messiah.

  163. that he came and suffered for our sin on

  164. the cross, [snorts] that he was buried

  165. in a tomb and rose again the third day,

  166. that he ascended into heaven and is

  167. seated at the right hand of God,

  168. something that seemingly would fall

  169. under blasphemy.

  170. [snorts]

  171. The question in all of our minds is

  172. something along these lines. How can we

  173. trust

  174. what this man is saying?

  175. How can we believe that what Paul

  176. testified to about Jesus of Nazareth is

  177. really true?

  178. How can we trust that he is a faithful

  179. Jew as he claims to be when he's done

  180. all these other things?

  181. Why should I believe that Jesus is the

  182. Messiah? Why should I believe that he is

  183. the only way to salvation? Why should I

  184. believe that Jesus rose from the dead?

  185. You see, Paul is not the only one on

  186. trial here.

  187. The gospel is on trial. The Christian

  188. faith is on trial. Because if Paul is

  189. not a credible witness and carries no

  190. divine authority, then the gospel that

  191. he preached can be dismissed entirely.

  192. But with these questions on our mind,

  193. Paul asks the chief captain if he can

  194. speak to us.

  195. He is granted permission and he stands

  196. up to give his defense and he tells us

  197. why we can and should trust the witness

  198. that he gives.

  199. The testimony that he makes.

  200. Onethird of the New Testament was either

  201. written by Paul or about Paul. And many

  202. of the core New Testament doctrines of

  203. the church came directly from Paul's

  204. letters, particularly about our

  205. salvation through Jesus Christ.

  206. Most of Acts narrates Paul's missionary

  207. journey. See, Paul was not just a side

  208. note to the Christian as an apostle. He

  209. was the stones on which the foundation

  210. of the church was built after Christ.

  211. And so if Paul is not a credible

  212. witness, if Paul does not carry divine

  213. authority, if Paul has gone rogue and

  214. invented his own religion, then his

  215. gospel cannot be trusted.

  216. And if his gospel is false,

  217. then what happens to our faith? [snorts]

  218. What hope do we have if Jesus did not

  219. die for our sin in our place?

  220. What hope do we have if he did not rise

  221. from the dead and if he did not promise

  222. to give eternal life to all who will

  223. believe?

  224. Well, thankfully we don't have to doubt

  225. Paul's ministry.

  226. And we can and should trust Paul's

  227. message. Why?

  228. What grounds do we have to know that

  229. Paul's ministry was real and that his

  230. message was true?

  231. I introduce you to Paul's defense.

  232. Paul gives us two reasons why we ought

  233. to believe and trust what he says.

  234. First, it's because of who selected him,

  235. who selected him as a witness. But then

  236. number two, it's who sent him as a

  237. witness. That's what we find in our text

  238. this morning. who selected Paul and who

  239. sent Paul. Let's first begin with

  240. looking at who selected Paul.

  241. Paul begins his defense by recounting

  242. where he came from. We read how he spoke

  243. to them in the Hebrew tongue which they

  244. would have spec expected him being born

  245. in a Roman colony like Tarsus that he

  246. would speak to them in Greek in the

  247. common man's language. but instead he's

  248. chosen to speak to them in their

  249. religious language, Hebrew. And so it

  250. says to us in verse two that when they

  251. heard him speak in the Hebrew tongue,

  252. they kept them more silent. They were

  253. very interested to hear what this

  254. well-educated man had to say in their

  255. native tongue.

  256. Paul says in verse three, "I am verily a

  257. man which am a Jew. I'm not a Gentile.

  258. I'm a man like you. We are family." He

  259. says, [snorts] "Although I was born in

  260. Tarsus, that Roman colony in Cissia, I

  261. was brought up I was raised in this city

  262. right here in Jerusalem. And not only I

  263. raised in Jerusalem, I was brought up at

  264. the feet of Galial, a renowned Pharisee

  265. rabbi.

  266. He learned from the best of the best,

  267. the most religious among the religious.

  268. At other places, Paul called himself

  269. blameless according to the law in those

  270. days. He says here that he was taught

  271. after the perfect manner of the law of

  272. the fathers. And he says that he was

  273. zealous toward God as ye all are this

  274. day. Paul says, "One day I had stood in

  275. your shoes.

  276. I was exactly like you. In fact, more

  277. zealous than you from this standpoint."

  278. He says in verse four, I persecuted this

  279. way. This way refers to the Christian

  280. faith. I persecuted Christians unto the

  281. death, binding and imprisoning both men

  282. and women.

  283. He says, you could look to the high

  284. priest in verse 5. and the whole council

  285. of the elders because I received letters

  286. from them to go to Damascus with

  287. authority to bring anyone who believed

  288. on Jesus Christ back to Jerusalem bound

  289. to be punished.

  290. I was so zealous for God that I

  291. persecuted Christians even to death.

  292. In fact, Paul was such a zealous

  293. Pharisee that it says back in Acts

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  294. chapter 8 that he breathed out

  295. threatenings and slaughter. It's as if

  296. persecuting Christians was what Paul

  297. lived for. The very breath that he

  298. breathed

  299. was to kill Christians.

  300. But Paul tells them how he was radically

  301. changed from a persecutor of Christians

  302. to a preacher of Christ. How did that

  303. happen? He says in verse number six,

  304. "And it came to pass that as I made my

  305. journey and was come nigh unto Damascus

  306. about noon, suddenly there shone from

  307. heaven a great light round about me, and

  308. I fell to the ground and heard a voice

  309. saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why

  310. persecutest thou me?" I wonder in this

  311. moment if Paul was wondering who this

  312. was.

  313. Perhaps faces of people he had

  314. persecuted began to flash for his

  315. through his eyes. Memories began to come

  316. back.

  317. But he's not left guessing for long

  318. because

  319. he says in verse number eight, "Who art

  320. thou, Lord?" He knows that whoever this

  321. is shining with a light of glory upon

  322. him and calling to him down out of

  323. heaven is none other than the Lord. The

  324. question is, who is he? and he said unto

  325. me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou

  326. persecutest.

  327. This man that Paul sought to stomp out

  328. has now arrested his attention on the

  329. Damascus road and revealed himself not

  330. to be a body stolen out of a tomb by his

  331. disciples, but to be the risen and

  332. living and ascended Lord of heaven and

  333. earth and over all creation.

  334. I'm Jesus of Nazareth.

  335. [snorts]

  336. He says to him in verse number nine,

  337. "And they that were with me saw me light

  338. and were afraid, but they heard not the

  339. voice of him that spake to me." This

  340. appearance of Christ was specifically

  341. and extraordinarily for Paul himself.

  342. He says this in verse 11 or verse 10.

  343. And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord? And

  344. the Lord said unto me, arise and go into

  345. Damascus, and there it shall be told

  346. thee of all things which are appointed

  347. for thee to do. Paul was appointed to

  348. persecute Christians in Damascus. And

  349. yet this encounter with Christ has

  350. altered the the the entire direction of

  351. his life.

  352. Another appointment awaiting him. He has

  353. a new Lord that he is calling upon here.

  354. A new authority over his life. And this

  355. encounter with the risen Christ changed

  356. him forever. And I say to you today that

  357. such should be the case in every

  358. believer's life.

  359. See, when when you encounter Jesus

  360. Christ and you believe on him and accept

  361. him as your savior, it ought to change

  362. the course of your life because you not

  363. only accept him as savior, you are

  364. called to submit to him as Paul does

  365. here as Lord. Can I ask you? You may

  366. have accepted Jesus as your savior, but

  367. is he your lord?

  368. Has he changed your life, altered your

  369. direction?

  370. Has he taken you out of the kingdom of

  371. darkness and translated you into the

  372. kingdom of light as the apostle Paul

  373. said in the book of Colossians?

  374. Has he changed your life?

  375. Have your relationships been submitted

  376. to him? Has your lifestyle become

  377. submitted to him? Are you living now

  378. still for the pleasures of sin and the

  379. pleasures of your own desires? or are

  380. you living for the pleasure of Jesus

  381. Christ and his call on your life?

  382. Paul's life was changed. He was

  383. converted. He was saved through this

  384. encounter with Jesus Christ. But I also

  385. want you to notice that Paul was

  386. selected by God to be a witness of

  387. Christ. If you look with me at verse

  388. number 11, he says this. And when I

  389. could not see for the glory of that

  390. light, being led by the hand of them

  391. that were with me, I came into Damascus,

  392. and one Ananas, a devout man according

  393. to the law, having a good report of all

  394. the Jews, uh, which dwelt there, came

  395. unto me, and stood and said unto me,

  396. Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the

  397. same hour I looked upon him, and he

  398. said, Watch this, church. And he said in

  399. verse 14, "The God of our fathers hath

  400. chosen thee."

  401. Do you understand the case that Paul is

  402. building here? He has spoken to them in

  403. a Hebrew tongue. He has identified

  404. himself as a Jew, zealous as could be

  405. for the law of God, caring about God's

  406. honor and God's glory, religious in the

  407. temple. And he says that he has this

  408. encounter with Christ and God brings him

  409. Christ sends him to this man Ananas who

  410. himself is a devout Jew.

  411. All the Jews testify that this man is a

  412. good faithful Jew

  413. and he told me the God of our fathers

  414. chose me.

  415. The case that he's building here is

  416. this. Christianity is not a man-made

  417. offshoot of Judaism. It is the

  418. fulfillment of the Jewish faith.

  419. Judaism finds its end in Jesus Christ,

  420. the Jewish Messiah is what Paul is

  421. saying. [snorts]

  422. But notice what he was chosen for in

  423. verse 14. The God of our fathers hath

  424. chosen thee that thou shouldest know his

  425. will.

  426. You know what that means? Everything

  427. that happened surrounding Jesus Christ

  428. was according to God's will.

  429. See, God had planned before the world

  430. was ever created, knowing that if he

  431. gives man a free will, man will

  432. certainly choose to sin. Why? Because

  433. man is not God and man cannot be

  434. perfect. And therefore, he planned

  435. before time ever began that he would not

  436. send an angel, that he would not send an

  437. ordinary man, but that he would send his

  438. only son, perfect, holy, in perfect

  439. unity with the Trinity, the divine son

  440. of God, would come and take on human

  441. flesh and lay his life down on the cross

  442. as a sacrifice for the sins of all

  443. mankind so that man could be restored to

  444. the blessing of God and reconciled to a

  445. right relationship with God through This

  446. man identified in the Old Testament as

  447. the just one.

  448. God called him my righteous servant who

  449. shall fulfill all my will. He's

  450. identified in the Old Testament as the

  451. holy one, the righteous one, the just

  452. one. And Ananas tells Paul in verse 14

  453. that God had chosen him to know his will

  454. and to see that just one. Paul not only

  455. heard, but what this tells us is he saw

  456. the glory of Jesus Christ risen from the

  457. dead. He saw him, but he also heard from

  458. the voice of his mouth. But notice why

  459. Paul was selected by the God of their

  460. fathers. Verse 15. For thou shalt be his

  461. witness unto all men of what thou hast

  462. seen and heard. God selected Paul to be

  463. a witness of Jesus Christ.

  464. So Ananas tells him in verse 16, "And

  465. now, why terest thou? Arise and be

  466. baptized and wash away thy sins calling

  467. on the name of the Lord." And we know by

  468. Paul's testimony, he did just that.

  469. See, when Paul was converted, he was

  470. also selected by God to witness of Jesus

  471. Christ. You want to know what that

  472. means? That Paul did not hatch a plan on

  473. his own. That Paul did not invent

  474. Christianity or make up these doctrines.

  475. Paul was not seeking Jesus Christ. He

  476. was seeking to destroy his followers. He

  477. told the Jews that I was just as zealous

  478. as you are this day. What had they done?

  479. mobbed him, beat him, attacked him,

  480. bound him, carried him off. He said, "I

  481. was just where you are. And what changed

  482. was I saw the risen Christ and the God

  483. of our fathers

  484. selected me."

  485. Selected me. You know what that means

  486. for you today, believer?

  487. It means that the words that we read

  488. from Paul, the messages that he

  489. preached, the accounts of his life, the

  490. letters he wrote, it means this, that

  491. they can all be trusted.

  492. Because in God's sovereign grace and his

  493. infinite mercy, he chose Paul. He

  494. revealed his son to him in a way that

  495. was undeniable. In a way that Paul could

  496. do nothing but accept Jesus as the Lord

  497. and the Savior of his life. But God

  498. selected him to serve as an eyewitness

  499. of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We

  500. still read his witness today and you can

  501. trust it. Why? He wasn't appointed by

  502. man. He was not a self-aclaimed uh

  503. preacher of the gospel. No, he was

  504. divinely chosen by God who planned from

  505. the foundation of the world to bring

  506. redemption through his son Jesus Christ.

  507. Paul began his defense by showing the

  508. Jews that he was selected by God.

  509. But now Paul shifts his defense to his

  510. mission among the Gentiles.

  511. See, because let's think about this real

  512. quick.

  513. What what Paul has set up. If Paul is a

  514. Jew

  515. and he saw the Jewish Messiah and he was

  516. selected to be a witness by the Jewish

  517. God, then what is Paul doing ministering

  518. among the Gentiles? [snorts]

  519. Why is his ministry in Cissia and Syria?

  520. Why is it in Asia? Why is it in

  521. Macedonia? Why is it in Ao? If if this

  522. is a Jewish religion that comes from a

  523. Jewish God with a Jewish Messiah and a

  524. Jewish witness, then what is he doing

  525. among the Gentiles? That is the heart of

  526. their issue with Paul. It's as if he's

  527. abandoned the Jewish faith and gone to

  528. the Gentiles and is telling Jews

  529. everywhere and Gentiles to abandon the

  530. law and abandon the temple. And he

  531. doesn't care about polluting the temple

  532. and all those things. And what Paul is

  533. showing them is none of that is true. My

  534. Christian faith is not divorced from my

  535. Jewish faith. It is the fulfillment of

  536. it.

  537. So why is he ministering among the

  538. Gentiles? Well, that brings us to our

  539. second point that Paul was not only

  540. selected by God, but we find that he was

  541. sent by the Christ. Would you look at

  542. verse 17? It says, "And it came to pass

  543. that when I was come again to Jerusalem,

  544. even while I prayed in the temple, I was

  545. in a trance." Why is Paul saying even

  546. while I prayed in the temple, he's

  547. continuing this idea to turn upside down

  548. the the accusations that he's not a

  549. faithful Jew? Does a faithful Jew pray

  550. to God? Does a faithful Jew pray to God

  551. in the or does an unfaithful Jew pray to

  552. God in the temple? No. What's Paul

  553. doing? Praying in the temple. He's still

  554. showing them that that in my direct

  555. connection of my prayer to the God of

  556. our fathers in the house of the God of

  557. our fathers, I was in a trance and I saw

  558. him who Jesus Christ saying unto me,

  559. make haste and get thee quickly out of

  560. Jerusalem, for they will not receive thy

  561. testimony concerning me. Why is Paul no

  562. longer in Jerusalem?

  563. If this is a Jewish Messiah, if this is

  564. a selection from a Jewish God, if he

  565. himself is a faithful Jewish man, why is

  566. he not preaching in Jerusalem? Here's

  567. why. Because Isaiah 53 was fulfilled

  568. when the prophet said, "Who hath

  569. believed our report?" And to whom hath

  570. the arm of the Lord been revealed?

  571. He was despised and rejected of men.

  572. See, just as Jesus was rejected by his

  573. own in Jerusalem when Paul gave

  574. testimony of Christ in Jerusalem, he too

  575. was rejected by his own. And and Paul

  576. says, "I even objected a little bit in

  577. verse 19." He said, "And I said, Lord,

  578. they know that I imprisoned and beat

  579. every in this in every synagogue them

  580. that believed on thee. And when the

  581. blood of thy martyr Steven was shed, I

  582. also was standing by and consenting unto

  583. his death, and kept the raignments of

  584. them that slew him." You know what I

  585. think Paul is doing here? I I believe

  586. that Paul is is stating, "But won't my

  587. changed life

  588. affect their belief?

  589. Won't they believe if they realize the

  590. transformation

  591. that has taken place?" And yet, notice

  592. Jesus's response in verse 21. He says,

  593. "And he said unto me, Depart, for I will

  594. send thee far hence unto the Gentiles."

  595. See what Paul is conveying here is I

  596. came to Jerusalem

  597. and when I came to Jerusalem to preach

  598. Christ, Jesus appeared to me. This

  599. Jewish Messiah, the Christ said, "You

  600. need to leave quickly because my people

  601. will not receive your witness.

  602. Therefore, depart. I will send you to

  603. the Gentiles."

  604. Paul's defense before this Jewish mob is

  605. this.

  606. I was selected by the God of our fathers

  607. and I was sent by our Messiah.

  608. That's what he says. And because of

  609. that, they should have believed and

  610. accepted his report, but they did not.

  611. Look at verse 23 or verse 22. And they

  612. gave him audience unto this word. The

  613. idea that the Messiah sent the gospel

  614. away from the Jews and to the Gentiles.

  615. That was the breaking point for them.

  616. They said, "No, I'm not listening to

  617. this anymore." And they said, "Away with

  618. such a fellow from the earth, for it is

  619. not fit that he should live." They

  620. called for his death.

  621. If my daughters are playing outside

  622. and I send my son to say, "Hey, go call

  623. the girls in." And he goes out to the

  624. sliding glass door and opens that up and

  625. he shouts outside, "Girls, come inside."

  626. What are they going to do? They're going

  627. to blow him off. They're they're going

  628. to say, "Says who?" You know, something

  629. like that. And and just not pay any

  630. attention to him. That's why I tell my

  631. son, "Hey son, go tell the girls that

  632. dad said it's time to come inside." Why?

  633. That carries authority behind it. It

  634. carries weight behind it. And you know

  635. what happens when he goes out there and

  636. says, "Girls, dad says to come in, they

  637. are obligated

  638. to believe him and to obey him." You

  639. know what Paul's doing here?

  640. He's saying, "I came to Jerusalem

  641. preaching Jesus and you rejected me. And

  642. Jesus sent me to the ends of the earth

  643. to preach his name among the Gentiles.

  644. And now I have come back to tell you

  645. this.

  646. Dad says so. [snorts]

  647. The God of our fathers

  648. stopped me in my tracks when I was ready

  649. to kill Christians left and right. Jesus

  650. showed up. I encountered him. I saw his

  651. glory. It blinded me. I heard his voice.

  652. He identified himself. He is the

  653. Messiah. He is the Lord. And he told me

  654. where I should go. And when I went, this

  655. devout Jewish man came to me and said,

  656. "The God of our fathers hath chosen

  657. thee,

  658. and the Messiah has sent me."

  659. They should have been obligated

  660. to believe and obey, but they were not.

  661. But why was the book of Acts written?

  662. It's good to go back to this every now

  663. and then. You find the answer in Luke's

  664. gospel

  665. 1:es 1-4 that Luke said he had written

  666. both his gospel and then his second

  667. volume the book of acts he had written

  668. them to a man named Theophilos that he

  669. might know the certainty of the things

  670. which he had been taught. And [snorts]

  671. that idea is what governs our

  672. understanding of this book. And so when

  673. we come to a text like this, we're not

  674. just supposed to be uh scared of

  675. rejecting Jesus like they were, though

  676. we'll get to that here in just a minute.

  677. God wants us to understand from this

  678. text that we have a reason to believe.

  679. We have a reason to be certain of what

  680. we have been taught. And the reason that

  681. he gives us here is because the witness

  682. of the gospel that we received from the

  683. apostle Paul, he was divinely selected

  684. by God and sent by Jesus Christ. And

  685. because he was, we should believe and

  686. obey what Paul says in the Bible.

  687. That's the point here. The gospel we

  688. receive from him is trustworthy.

  689. It came according to God's divine will.

  690. He sent his son through the lineage of

  691. David just as he said he would. He came

  692. unto his own people and he was despised

  693. and rejected just like God said he would

  694. be. He was wounded for our

  695. transgressions just as God said he would

  696. be. He took the punishment to bring us

  697. to peace with God just as God said he

  698. would. But he also raised Jesus from the

  699. dead. Just as David recorded by the Holy

  700. Spirit, "Thou will not leave my soul in

  701. hell, neither will thou sh suffer thine

  702. holy one to see corruption." What does

  703. that word holy one sound like? The just

  704. one, the righteous one. David was

  705. writing under the inspiration of the

  706. spirit to [snorts] of the Messiah to

  707. come. The just one that he would not be

  708. left in the grave, that he would not be

  709. left to decay, but he would rise from

  710. the dead. God did what he said. Jesus

  711. gave his life on the cross as a Passover

  712. lamb to atone for our sins and to spare

  713. us from the judgment of God to give you

  714. eternal life if you would but believe on

  715. him.

  716. When Israel rejected their Messiah,

  717. God selected and Christ sent witnesses

  718. like Paul to take this good news of the

  719. gospel message to all nations so that

  720. all people might hear and believe and be

  721. saved by the grace and mercy of God

  722. through Jesus. And because it all

  723. happened according to God's plan,

  724. because God selected Paul to know God's

  725. will, to see his son, and to hear his

  726. voice, and because Christ sent him to

  727. bear witness of his name, you can anchor

  728. your soul to everything that Paul has

  729. recorded by the Holy Spirit. You know

  730. what that means? That when Paul preached

  731. in Antioch in Acts chapter number 13,

  732. that through Jesus is preached unto you

  733. the forgiveness of sins. and by him all

  734. that believe are justified from all

  735. things. It means that if you've placed

  736. your faith in Jesus Christ, you can know

  737. this morning that all of your sins are

  738. forgiven, past, present, and future.

  739. That all of them are covered by the

  740. blood of Jesus Christ, you can know that

  741. God has declared you righteous in him.

  742. It's certain. It's settled. When Paul

  743. wrote in Romans 5:1, "Therefore, being

    Romans 5:1

  744. justified by faith, we have peace with

  745. God through our Lord Jesus Christ." You

  746. know what that means for you? That if

  747. you've trusted Christ as your savior,

  748. you are really at peace with God. Even

  749. when you don't feel at peace with God,

  750. Christ has made peace for you. It means

  751. when Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:8

    2 Corinthians 5:8

  752. that when you are absent from the body,

  753. you are present with the Lord. It means

  754. that if you've trusted Christ, then you

  755. can know without a shadow of a doubt

  756. that if your faith is in him, the moment

  757. you take your final breath in this life,

  758. you will take your next in the presence

  759. of Jesus Christ. Everything Paul said,

  760. you can trust and mark it down as true.

  761. Why? Because he was selected by God and

  762. sent by Christ. Therefore, his witness

  763. carries credibility and authority that

  764. you can trust in. believer, this ought

  765. to give you a strong sense of conviction

  766. in the things that we hear from Paul's

  767. mouth and read from his writings. And it

  768. should fill you with the boldness of the

  769. Holy Spirit to go into a city like

  770. Boulder, Colorado or the nations around

  771. the world and proclaim it not with fear

  772. and intimidation, but with boldness and

  773. courage. Why? Because we know it is

  774. true. Should strengthen your faith,

  775. believers.

  776. Now, let me speak for a moment to those

  777. of you who may be like Paul's Jewish

  778. audience.

  779. You're here. You're listening intently

  780. to the truth of the gospel today. And

  781. when God's redemptive plan is revealed

  782. unto you, you will respond in one of two

  783. ways. First of all, you could respond

  784. like Paul did.

  785. Paul was vehemently opposed to

  786. Christianity.

  787. But when he came face to face with the

  788. reality of the risen and resurrected

  789. Jesus Christ,

  790. what was his response?

  791. First of all, who art thou, Lord?

  792. Reveal yourself to me.

  793. He did not resist the voice he heard nor

  794. the shining light of glory that he saw.

  795. He said, "Who are you, Lord?" And when

  796. Jesus revealed himself, saying, "I am

  797. Jesus of Nazareth." What was Paul's next

  798. response? What shall I do, Lord?

  799. What shall I do?

  800. Paul was no longer fighting and

  801. resisting and opposing Jesus. Rather, he

  802. was submitting himself to whatever this

  803. glorious Lord required of him.

  804. You know what Jesus did?

  805. He didn't give it all to him from his

  806. own mouth in this resurre in this

  807. resurrection appearance.

  808. He told Paul, "Go to Damascus.

  809. Go to the house of this man named Judas

  810. and a man named Ananas is going to come

  811. to you." And consistent with the book of

  812. acts, Christ worked through a

  813. gospel.

  814. Ananas comes to him

  815. reveals that God had selected him to be

  816. a witness of Jesus Christ. And what does

  817. he say to him in verse number 16? And

  818. now why terest thou? Don't delay any

  819. longer is what that means. And he says,

  820. "Arise and be baptized and wash away thy

  821. sins, calling on the name of the Lord."

  822. Question, does this mean that baptism

  823. saves your soul? Does this mean that it

  824. literally washes away your sins? No.

  825. That would be inconsistent with the rest

  826. of scripture. The way this is literally

  827. written would be this. Arise and be

  828. baptized and wash away thy sins as you

  829. call on the name of the Lord as you

  830. call. See, Jesus didn't reveal

  831. everything to him. He knew who Jesus

  832. was. But at that time, what was Paul's

  833. question? What shall I do? And all that

  834. Jesus told him was, "Go to this place

  835. and I'm going to send you this witness."

  836. And when Ananas came, here's what here's

  837. what he told him. You need to be

  838. baptized

  839. and you need to wash away your sins as

  840. you call on Christ. Paul believed Jesus

  841. was risen.

  842. But Paul had not yet called upon Christ.

  843. He had come to this place where he knew

  844. of Jesus, but he needed to know what he

  845. was supposed to do.

  846. And what the Bible teaches is that for

  847. you to be saved first, the Bible teaches

  848. that you must repent,

  849. you must acknowledge that this is what

  850. that word means. Acknowledge that the

  851. way you were going was wrong. That your

  852. opposition to God was wrong. Your

  853. involvement in devilish things was

  854. wrong. Your sin was wrong. Your your

  855. your opposition to Christianity was

  856. wrong. Your unbelief was wrong. You

  857. realize that everywhere my life was

  858. going like Paul was heading in the wrong

  859. direction and now I am turning to Jesus

  860. Christ because I believe that he is the

  861. right direction. That is repentance my

  862. friend. The Bible says you must repent

  863. and then you must believe that Jesus

  864. died for your sin and rose again from

  865. the dead. That he alone paid the price

  866. for your salvation. that he alone is the

  867. way to God as he said, "I am the way,

  868. the truth, and the life. No man cometh

  869. unto the father but by me." You must

  870. believe he is the only way.

  871. But then the Bible also says you must

  872. call upon his name. Is that what we see

  873. in this text

  874. that you need to arise,

  875. you need to be baptized

  876. and wash away your sin calling upon the

  877. name of the Lord.

  878. the calling upon the name of the Lord.

  879. If you study what Paul teaches in Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  880. chapter 10, what does he say? That if

  881. thou shalt confess with thy mouth the

  882. Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine

  883. heart that God hath raised him from the

  884. dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the

  885. heart man believeth unto righteousness,

  886. and with the mouth confession is made

  887. unto salvation. And in Romans 10:13,

    Romans 10:13

  888. Paul said, "For whosoever shall call

  889. upon the name of the Lord shall be

  890. saved." There's no magic prayer that

  891. saves you. It's simply the faith in what

  892. Jesus Christ did and the confession of

  893. your faith in him, calling on him alone

  894. for your salvation. The Bible says,

  895. "Whosoever shall call upon the name of

  896. the Lord shall be saved." Here's the

  897. idea. Paul knows who Jesus is.

  898. Paul believes that Jesus is the Jewish

  899. Messiah, his only way to eternal life,

  900. his only way of forgiveness. And as Paul

  901. stands there in the waters to be

  902. baptized, he confesses his faith in

  903. Christ, calls upon Christ. His sins are

  904. washed away and Ananas baptizes him to

  905. symbolize his union with Jesus and his

  906. death, burial, and resurrection as his

  907. sins have been washed away by the blood

  908. of Jesus.

  909. You can respond today

  910. as Paul did. That when you hear the

  911. gospel, instead of resisting, instead of

  912. rejecting, you're willing to submit to

  913. whatever God's word says for me to be

  914. saved. Repent, believe, and call on the

  915. name of the Lord, and you can be saved

  916. today.

  917. >> [snorts]

  918. >> Or

  919. you can respond like the crowd did in

  920. verse 22.

  921. It says,

  922. "And they gave him audience

  923. unto this word and then lifted up their

  924. voices and said, Away with such a fellow

  925. from the earth, for it is not fit that

  926. he should live."

  927. They rejected his word.

  928. It came to a point where something about

  929. Paul's gospel message

  930. crossed a line in their minds

  931. and they stopped listening.

  932. See, many people can be confronted with

  933. the gospel. And you may be that this

  934. morning where you're confronted with the

  935. gospel and yet there's something along

  936. the lines that you don't agree with,

  937. something that you're unwilling to to

  938. cross a line. And because of that, you

  939. may never call for the death of

  940. Christians like they did here,

  941. but you may just walk away and utterly

  942. reject it. I'm not going there. I don't

  943. want to give up my sin. I think that

  944. there's many ways to God.

  945. I don't think you can really know for

  946. sure. And therefore, you don't believe

  947. and you don't call. And when you do not

  948. respond to the gospel as Paul did, it

  949. leaves you under the eternal wrath and

  950. condemnation of God.

  951. But God is willing to save you now

  952. if you'll do what the Lord said. If

  953. you'll obey the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  954. believe on him, confess his name, call

  955. on him for salvation, you can be saved.

  956. How do you know that? How do you know

  957. that, Pastor Mark?

  958. Paul said it and Paul was selected by

  959. God and he was sent by Christ and

  960. therefore you can mark it down. This

  961. came from the God of the Bible who is

  962. the creator of the universe. He will

  963. forgive your sin and save you right now

  964. if you'll trust in his son Jesus.

  965. believers, that ought to anchor our

  966. faith in scripture and fill us with

  967. boldness to proclaim the gospel to

  968. others.

  969. And because it's true, I urge you to

  970. believe and call on Jesus today.

  971. Let's pray. Our heavenly father, we

  972. thank you for the saving gospel of your

  973. son that he atoned for our sins

  974. and promises eternal life if we do but

  975. believe.

  976. This is a message that you have

  977. validated time and time again through

  978. the countless witnesses that you sent

  979. and selected. [music]

  980. And I pray that as believers, we would

  981. anchor our faith to these truths we

  982. [music] hold. And I pray for those who

  983. have not believed on Jesus that they

  984. would understand and believe today. In

  985. Jesus [music] name I pray. Amen.
