  1. We're going to take our Bibles now and

  2. turn to Numbers uh chapter 31. Numbers

  3. 31.

  4. Really intended to uh preach this entire

  5. chapter, though it's a lengthy one.

  6. There's a lot involved here, but I know

  7. what we're going to deal with in the

  8. first part of this chapter has some

  9. significant

  10. um apologetical

  11. implications for us, especially where we

  12. live here in Boulder regarding the

  13. justice of God in the conquest of

  14. Israel. And so instead of just rushing

  15. through these things, I really wanted to

  16. take some time tonight to just kind of

  17. pastor us through our way of thinking

  18. about this because our plan is to go to

  19. Deuteronomy and then Joshua. And we're

  20. going to get to the conquest. And

  21. there's going to be some things that

  22. make you squirm a little bit and make

  23. you wonder what's going on here. And why

  24. is God calling for this? And I want you

  25. to know that there are Bible answers and

  26. they're always rooted in the theology

  27. and character of our God. We want to

  28. base our belief and our understanding

  29. not on how we feel, not on what culture

  30. thinks, but on what God reveals of

  31. himself. And so, we're going to do our

  32. best to do that tonight. We're just

  33. going to cover uh verses 1 through 18

  34. for our text tonight. If you found your

  35. place, if you'll stand as we give honor

  36. to reading God's word together from

  37. Numbers chapter 31 and verse number one.

    Numbers 31 chapter mention

  38. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

  39. Avenge the children of Israel of the

  40. Midianites.

  41. Afterward shalt thou be gathered unto

  42. thy people. And Moses spake unto the

  43. people, saying, Arm some of yourselves

  44. unto the war, and let them go against

  45. the Midionites, and avenge the Lord of

  46. Midian. Of every tribe, a thousand

  47. throughout all the tribes of Israel

  48. shall ye send to the war. So they were

  49. delivered out of the thousands of

  50. Israel, a thousand of every tribe,

  51. 12,000 armed for war. And Moses sent

  52. them to the war, a thousand of every

  53. tribe, them and Phineas the son of

  54. Eleazar the priest to war with the holy

  55. instruments and the trumpets to blow in

  56. his hand. And they wared against the

  57. Midionites as the Lord commanded Moses.

  58. And they slew all the males. And they

  59. slew the kings of Midian beside the rest

  60. of them that were slain, namely Elvi and

  61. Reim, and Zur and her and Reeba, five

  62. kings of Midian. Balam also the son of

  63. Baor they slew with the sword. And the

  64. children of Israel took all the women of

  65. Midian captives and their little ones,

  66. and took the spoil of all their cattle,

  67. and all their flocks, and all their

  68. goods. And they burnt all their cities,

  69. wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly

  70. castles with fire. And they took all the

  71. spoil, and the prey, both of men and of

  72. beasts. And they brought the captives

  73. and the prey and the spoil unto Moses

  74. and Eleazar the priest and unto the

  75. congregation of the children of Israel

  76. under the camp at the plains of Moab

  77. which are by Jordan near Jericho. And

  78. Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the

  79. congregation of the princes of the

  80. congregation went forth to meet them

  81. without the camp. And Moses was wroth

  82. with the officers of the host, with the

  83. captains over thousands, and captains

  84. over hundreds, which came from the

  85. battle. And Moses said unto them, "Have

  86. ye saved all the women alive? Behold,

  87. these caused the children of Israel

  88. through the council of Balum to commit

  89. trespass against the Lord in the matter

  90. of Peor. and there was a plague among

  91. the congregation of the Lord. Now

  92. therefore, kill every male among the

  93. little ones, and kill every woman that

  94. hath known man by lying with him. But

  95. all the women children that have not

  96. known man by lying with him, keep alive

  97. for yourselves.

  98. So I think you can see here from these

  99. final verses why many people would

  100. struggle with this text.

  101. And we're going to touch on why this

  102. command is given. I want to um just

  103. start by

  104. saying that

  105. God is perfect in all his ways,

  106. righteous and holy.

  107. And anytime and and let me let me just I

  108. guess let me start by saying it this

  109. way. Modern civilization

  110. is far more heavily shaped by

  111. Christianity and biblical ethics than

  112. anyone cares to admit

  113. because what we see in this text was at

  114. one time normal, especially prior to

  115. Christianity spreading around the world.

  116. And so I want you to have that in mind

  117. as we go through this. But we're going

  118. to deal, I think, with some reasons in

  119. this text that clue us in into how God

  120. works through the conquest and why he

  121. orders these commands. And so, I'm going

  122. to ask God one more time to just help us

  123. understand tonight. Lord, we certainly

  124. need your grace and I need your help and

  125. communicating well and clearly. And the

  126. reason why I

  127. tremble

  128. at this message is not because at all of

  129. how people might take it, but it's

  130. because we are speaking of your

  131. character

  132. and of your nature, your holiness,

  133. and your justice.

  134. And I certainly want to say nothing that

  135. would minimize nor go beyond who you

  136. are. And so I just pray for an abundance

  137. of wisdom to communicate the truth of

  138. your word. And I pray that by your grace

  139. we might understand it clearly and have

  140. a better perspective on texts like

  141. these. It's in Jesus name I ask. Amen.

  142. You can be seated. The title of the

  143. message tonight is Awaiting the Avenger.

  144. Awaiting the Avenger. [snorts]

  145. In your experience,

  146. who is the most likely to face the

  147. consequences?

  148. The one who provokes

  149. or the one who is provoked?

  150. Usually, it's the one who is provoked.

  151. Because I learned very early on in a

  152. house with three boys that if I

  153. retaliate to one of my brothers, I will

  154. be the one to get in trouble.

  155. Whether it's throwing a pingpong paddle

  156. at them after they have been jerks or if

  157. it's throwing the second punch after

  158. they landed the first one, the second

  159. person gets in trouble. You see this as

  160. well as a sports fan. There are

  161. countless times that you'll see [snorts]

  162. uh the first person to throw the punch

  163. gets off scot-free, but the second

  164. person to throw the punch ends up

  165. getting the flag or the penalty. That's

  166. what happens. You know, sometimes,

  167. can't that seem true in your spiritual

  168. life as well?

  169. I want you to think about the fact that

  170. we live in a wicked, godless world that

  171. seeks to allure you and provoke you to

  172. sin.

  173. And that provocation in and of itself is

  174. sin. Trying to drag people into it,

  175. whether it's through entertainment and

  176. media or if it's through addictive

  177. substances or the worldwide web of

  178. entangling lust. Evil is out to seduce

  179. you.

  180. And [snorts] when you succumb to

  181. temptation and you choose to sin, you're

  182. often left to face the consequences of

  183. your own sinful actions. Make no

  184. mistake, even when seduced, your sin is

  185. your choice.

  186. Your sin is your choice. And so we face

  187. the consequences. But in the back of

  188. your mind, have you ever wondered, "I

  189. know I sinned. I know I deserve the just

  190. punishment for my sin. But Lord, what

  191. about those who provoked me?

  192. What about this evil world that seeks to

  193. allure me and seduce me? Why do they

  194. seemingly get off scot-free while I'm

  195. left with the fallout alone?"

  196. Sometimes that's how we can feel.

  197. Let me be clear that while there is

  198. enough sin in each of us to categorize

  199. us not as victims but as perpetrators,

  200. we can still wonder if God will avenge

  201. us of this evil world that fires its wy

  202. darts at us.

  203. >> [snorts]

  204. >> Well, we see this answer played out

  205. before us in Numbers 31.

  206. As numbers shifts back to the narrative

  207. plot, we're reminded from chapter 25

  208. that when Balam could not curse Israel,

  209. he counseledled the Moabites and the

  210. Midianites to seduce Israel into

  211. violating their covenant relationship

  212. with God, particularly through sexual

  213. immorality and idolatry.

  214. And the fallout of that seduction and

  215. that sin [snorts] was that thousands in

  216. Israel

  217. died when they succumbed to it. 24,000

  218. particularly

  219. died by a plague that broke out. And

  220. that plague was only stayed by the

  221. priest Phineas who offered atonement by

  222. killing Zimry and Cosby who were the

  223. leaders of the rebellion in that time.

  224. [snorts]

  225. And so there are so many here that died

  226. and faced swift judgment. But the text

  227. leaves you at that time for four

  228. chapters wondering what about the

  229. Midianites?

  230. What about their kings and their men who

  231. led in this seduction?

  232. What about Balum who counseledled them

  233. to do so? Who tried to curse Israel? How

  234. is it that 24,000 of God's people who

  235. were seduced into this sin? How come

  236. they died while the rest seem to get off

  237. scot-free?

  238. Well,

  239. it actually reminds me of the greater

  240. cosmic conflict

  241. between the seed of the serpent and the

  242. seed of the woman in Genesis 3

  243. when God cursed the ground and told men

  244. that he would that Adam and Eve that

  245. they would die and said that her seed

  246. would be bruised on the heel by the

  247. serpent. seed, but ultimately he would

  248. crush and triumph over the serpent's

  249. head with symbolic imagery to speak of

  250. the fact that the one who would redeem

  251. and save mankind from this sin and

  252. seduction at the hand of the serpent

  253. would be a wounded victor. And of

  254. course, that pictured the Lord Jesus

  255. Christ.

  256. Yet, what we know is that Satan is still

  257. free.

  258. that Satan is still wandering about as a

  259. roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

  260. Christ died. Yes, he was risen again.

  261. He's ascended into heaven, and we thank

  262. God for that. But this evil world is

  263. still infiltrated and moved and deceived

  264. by the devil and his hosts of demons.

  265. And they are working with everything

  266. they can still today to seduce the

  267. people of God into ruinous destruction

  268. in their lives. That's what he seeks to

  269. do. [snorts]

  270. Trying to deceive you into being

  271. unfaithful to God.

  272. And when we sin today, we face those

  273. consequences. But we ask, when will

  274. those who have seduced us be held

  275. accountable for their end of this deal?

  276. In Numbers 31, here's what we find. God

  277. avenges Israel of the Midionites at

  278. last. The day of judgment has come. And

  279. it reminds us that when the enemies of

  280. God seduce his people into sin, their

  281. judgment may be delayed,

  282. but it will come. And when it comes, it

  283. will be final.

  284. It's what we see in this text, and it's

  285. the hope that we have in Christ. The

  286. question is, how? How does God avenge

  287. his people of the seduction of their

  288. enemy? That's what we want to look at

  289. tonight. I want to show you first of all

  290. that it is the Lord who is the one that

  291. avenges his people. If we look at verse

  292. number one, it says, ' And the Lord

  293. spake unto Moses, saying, Avenge the

  294. children of Israel, of the Midionites,

  295. and afterward thou shalt be gathered

  296. into thy people. This is the final

  297. mission of Moses before his final

  298. message in Deuteronomy,

  299. and it's to avenge him, avenge Israel of

  300. the Midianites. And so what we have here

  301. is that it's the Lord giving Moses this

  302. final mission to carry out the vengeance

  303. of God. If we were to go back to chapter

  304. 25 at the very end, God told him, "Vex

  305. the Medidionites, but then all of a

  306. sudden it goes into a new census and it

  307. goes into instruction." And so they're

  308. counting the whole nation. I imagine

  309. that took quite a bit of time. And then

  310. they're dividing up how the the the

  311. princes are and where the land is going

  312. to go to. And then you have the dispute

  313. with the daughters of Zilofahad. And

  314. then you have instruction about vows and

  315. you have instruction about holidays and

  316. worship. And imagine some of these

  317. things took time. We don't know exactly

  318. how much time transpired. But but the

  319. way that Moses as he narrates the book

  320. of numbers is he indicates there was a

  321. pause that God said vex them but not

  322. yet.

  323. Vengeance will come but not yet.

  324. And Israel could not step out and avenge

  325. the Midioni themselves of the Midionites

  326. until God says go. And it's here that

  327. God says it's time to go.

  328. Now the idea of this word avenge is much

  329. more than mere retaliation. It's not God

  330. got in a furious anger and is giving

  331. them payback. This is a particular word

  332. that refers to just judgment for crimes

  333. committed. That's what it's talking

  334. about. just judgment for crimes

  335. committed. The way that a just judge

  336. would avenge a family of their killer,

  337. their f of their family members killer.

  338. That's what we're talking about here.

  339. Just judgment for crimes committed. But

  340. I want you to notice that while the Lord

  341. tells Moses to avenge the Midianites,

  342. the children of Israel of the

  343. Midianites, I want you to look at verse

  344. number three, what it says. And Moses

  345. spake unto the people, saying, "Arm some

  346. of yourselves unto the war, and let them

  347. go against the Midionites, and avenge

  348. the Lord of Midian." Do you see that

  349. shift?

  350. God says, "Avenge the children of Israel

  351. of the Midionites." But now Moses is

  352. saying, "Avenge the Lord of the

  353. Midionites." What is going on here? a

  354. Holy Spirit inspired tension to show

  355. that when this evil world seduces God's

  356. people,

  357. there is a vengeance that needs to take

  358. place.

  359. But at the same time, when God's people

  360. are seduced to sin, their sin is against

  361. God.

  362. That ultimately God is the one who is

  363. offended.

  364. The ultimate sin, the ultimate offense,

  365. the ultimate problem is not between man

  366. and man. It is about God. Why? Because

  367. God has entered into a covenant

  368. relationship with the children of

  369. Israel. He calls them his bride. He

  370. calls them his people. He calls them his

  371. firstborn son. These are all familial

  372. relationships. And what has happened

  373. here is the Midianites have seduced his

  374. people into adultery against him.

  375. Spiritual adultery.

  376. idolatry, sexual immorality, the the

  377. idea of everything they were doing there

  378. in the immorality and the eating of a

  379. meal and the idolatry, they made a

  380. covenant with the Midianites and their

  381. god, Baal. That would be like somebody

  382. seducing your wife away from you at the

  383. gym. It'd be like somebody seducing your

  384. husband away from you at work. Do you

  385. think there's going to be some vengeance

  386. going on within you? You know who the

  387. offense? Yes, they are offending with

  388. each other. But who's the ultimate

  389. offense against? You who's kept in the

  390. outside. You whose covenant has been

  391. broken in marriage. That's the picture

  392. that we're given here. In fact, when you

  393. when we look later at verse 16 and it

  394. says that they they brought them to

  395. commit trespass. That's literally what

  396. the word means is to break faithfulness.

  397. That's what the problem is here. And so

  398. Moses is careful to convey that although

  399. Israel was seduced, the ultimate offense

  400. is against God and he is the one who

  401. really deserves to be avenged.

  402. I think it's really important for us to

  403. remember that even when we are seduced

  404. into sin, we need to recognize that

  405. there is enough sin in our own hearts to

  406. lead us astray from God. The Bible says,

  407. "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am

  408. tempted of God." For God cannot be

  409. tempted with evil, neither tempteth he

  410. any man. But it says, "Every man is

  411. tempted when he is drawn away of his own

  412. lust and enticed." You know what that

  413. means? In each and every one of us,

  414. there's some kind of lust, some kind of

  415. inordinate desire, inordinate affection

  416. for something that God doesn't want for

  417. us, for something that God has forbidden

  418. us from. And that what happens is when

  419. that lust within us meets temptation at

  420. the perfect moment, the Bible says it

  421. conceives sin and sin when it is

  422. finished bringeth forth death. That's

  423. what Israel has experienced.

  424. Those 24,000

  425. had enough lust going on within them as

  426. we've seen throughout the wilderness

  427. journey. It didn't take much. But when

  428. the Midianites came and said, "Hey,

  429. let's make intermarriages and we'll eat

  430. this covenant meal and then we can uh

  431. worship the same God and and that was

  432. all they needed." Why? Because there was

  433. enough lust in their hearts. And so we

  434. need to realize that while seduction may

  435. come, what we do is we have lust in our

  436. hearts and sinful desires in our hearts

  437. that brings us astray from God at the

  438. perfect moment of temptation. And

  439. therefore, rather than blaming the

  440. seduction, we need to look inside at the

  441. lust in our own hearts and recognize

  442. that the real person who's been offended

  443. is not me. It is God.

  444. I am not a victim to seduction.

  445. I am a perpetrator of sin,

  446. just like Israel was here. That's what

  447. Moses is recognizing here.

  448. And so, he calls for a thousand from

  449. each tribe. He sends them to war along

  450. with Phineas who's the son of Eleazar.

  451. Eleazar is the high priest. But Phineas,

  452. remember when he made atonement when he

  453. was filled with zeal and that man was

  454. carrying that woman, that one woman to

  455. the tent of all of his brothers and his

  456. family. I mean, you can put it together

  457. here what's going on there. When he saw

  458. them walk blatantly through the

  459. tabernacle and the congregation to

  460. commit lewd, wickedness, he couldn't

  461. take it anymore. He rose up. He took the

  462. javelin and he killed them both in the

  463. act. And God says that that stayed the

  464. plague because it made atonement. How

  465. so? The wages of sin is death.

  466. Phineas makes atonement. What did God

  467. do? He made a covenant with Phineas that

  468. he would be a priesthood before the Lord

  469. and his descendants for all of his

  470. generations. And look who is leading the

  471. way in this war there in verse number

  472. six. It's Phineas, the son of Eleazar.

  473. He's got the holy instruments in his

  474. hand. He's got the trumpets. We studied

  475. that earlier in this book as well. That

  476. the trumpet blast would signal to Israel

  477. that God is going before them as they

  478. hear the sound of that trumpet echo

  479. through the mountains and the valleys

  480. and out into the battlefield. They would

  481. see God is leading our way. Do you see

  482. what the picture is presenting?

  483. The Lord is leading the vengeance, not

  484. Israel.

  485. God has called them to do this.

  486. And so they make war against them. And

  487. [snorts] it says that as they wared as

  488. the Lord commanded, they slew all the

  489. males. Every adult male was killed in

  490. this war. And then it mentions these

  491. five kings. One of them, you'll notice,

  492. is named Zur. That is the father of

  493. Cosby. These kings are more like tribal

  494. princes. It's he's called a prince back

  495. in chapter 25. And so it's not like

  496. these are necessarily city kings. Uh

  497. because the when you study the

  498. Midionites, they're more like a nomadic

  499. tribe spread out all throughout the uh

  500. the the Egyptian, the Sinai Peninsula,

  501. Arabia, up into the land of Moab, the

  502. land of Canaan. They're spread out

  503. everywhere. And so these would be like

  504. the princes of the tribes of Israel. So

  505. there's five particular uh Midianite

  506. tribes that are involved in this. And

  507. one of them was caused by his father and

  508. he is killed. And at the end of verse

  509. number eight, it says, "And Balam also

  510. the son of Bor, they slew with the

  511. sword." Why? Because he was the one

  512. leading this charge. He counseledled

  513. them, consulted with them. After seeing

  514. that all three times he tried to curse

  515. Israel, it was impossible for him to

  516. curse them because they were so blessed.

  517. You know what he did? He said, "Here you

  518. go, Bailac, king of Moab. Here you go,

  519. Midionite elders. This is how you can

  520. get Israel to trip up. Have them break

  521. their covenant with God, and God will

  522. turn his back on them, and you'll be

  523. able to destroy them." That's really the

  524. intent in Balam's heart. And therefore,

  525. he [snorts] too is justly killed in this

  526. war. It says in verse 9, "The children

  527. of Israel took all the women of Midian

  528. captives and the little ones and the

  529. spoil of their cattle, their flocks,

  530. their goods, and burnt all their cities

  531. wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly

  532. castles with fire. They took the spoil

  533. and all the prey both of men and of

  534. beasts. And they brought the captives

  535. and the prey and the spoil to Moses and

  536. Eleazar the priest, but to the whole

  537. congregation back at the camp in the

  538. plains [snorts] of Moab near Jericho."

  539. And so they are bringing a swift

  540. and a devastating judgment on these

  541. Midianite tribes. Why? Because they had

  542. risen up against God's people and

  543. seduced them.

  544. The Lord is ordering that his people be

  545. avenged of the seduction of the

  546. Midionites.

  547. Just judgment for crimes committed.

  548. >> [snorts]

  549. >> And so we find in this chapter that

  550. while God delayed his judgment, it

  551. eventually came and Israel avenged the

  552. Lord and the Lord avenged Israel of

  553. Midian. And I want to say to you that

  554. just as God led the way in avenging

  555. Israel, we can trust God to avenge us as

  556. well of this wicked world that seeks to

  557. lure you, that seeks to seduce you, that

  558. seeks to suck you in and destroy your

  559. life and destroy your marriage and

  560. destroy your family. That sin that's

  561. constantly pulling in the direction.

  562. Listen, I don't want to absolve you from

  563. guilt. Keep this in your mind. And

  564. there's enough sin and lustful desires

  565. within us that all it takes is the

  566. perfect moment of temptation and will go

  567. exactly the way that the longing of our

  568. heart wants to go. But there is

  569. something to be said for this world that

  570. seeks to draw you in.

  571. And what we can trust is that God will

  572. bring vengeance.

  573. He will [snorts] listen. We are not

  574. called to wage holy wars against an evil

  575. world.

  576. We are called to resist the devil. We

  577. are called to stand strong in our faith.

  578. We are called to endure hardships and

  579. persecution. And we are called to flee

  580. this world's seductive system as God

  581. called Israel in the book of Isaiah to

  582. come out of Babylon. They weren't even

  583. in Babylon yet. Why was he telling them

  584. to come out? because Jerusalem was

  585. acting like Babylon. And he was saying,

  586. "Come out of this evil world's system."

  587. And so, we're called to flee it. We are

  588. not commanded to riot in the streets,

  589. nor mob at the White House, nor attack

  590. abortion clinics, nor to judge ethnic

  591. groups.

  592. We are called to preach Christ.

  593. We are called to expand his heavenly

  594. kingdom. Not by waging war with the

  595. sword, but by waging war with the word.

  596. What do we see in Acts? The triumph of

  597. God's word. Going into cities and

  598. reshaping an the identity of the city of

  599. Ephesus and reshaping the identity of

  600. Corinth and reshaping eventually the

  601. identity of Athens. You see, the word of

  602. God triumphs everywhere it goes. All

  603. throughout the book of Acts, that is

  604. what the church is called to do. And

  605. throughout Christian history, people

  606. have gotten that a little mixed up. And

  607. they've turned to Old Testament passages

  608. and used it to to warrant the

  609. displacement and the abuse of indigenous

  610. tribes and to wage war and crusades

  611. against other countries and to claim

  612. sacred territory. But I want you to know

  613. this that in the New Testament, God's

  614. people are not called to operate that

  615. way.

  616. We are called to preach the gospel of

  617. Jesus Christ.

  618. [snorts]

  619. The word of God repeatedly tells us,

  620. "Vengeance is mine. I will repay, saith

  621. the Lord." And so what we see in this

  622. text is that the vengeance against the

  623. Midionites came directly from the

  624. command of the Lord. But the Lord gives

  625. no direct command to his church to

  626. retaliate or to pay back against this

  627. evil world. We are called to live

  628. faithfully and to endure hardness and

  629. persecution and suffering and to leave

  630. vengeance in God's hands. That's what

  631. we're called to do.

  632. And so we can trust that although right

  633. now God's vengeance may be delayed, it

  634. will come. And I promise you when it

  635. comes it will be final. And that's what

  636. we see in the rest of this text.

  637. Moses and Eleazar in verse 13, the

  638. princes of the congregation, they go out

  639. of the camp to go and meet with the army

  640. that is coming their way. And notice it

  641. says in verse 14, Moses was wroth with

  642. the officer the of the host the with the

  643. captains over hund thousands and

  644. captains over hundreds which came from

  645. the battle. Why was he wroth? It says

  646. and Moses said unto them, have ye saved

  647. all the women alive?

  648. Have you saved all the women alive?

  649. Moses is angry that they have not killed

  650. all the women.

  651. That sounds strange to us that he would

  652. be so furious,

  653. that he would be so angry

  654. about this. We live in a modern world,

  655. as I mentioned at the beginning, that

  656. has been heavily reshaped by Christian

  657. ethics, whether an unbelieving world

  658. recognizes it or not.

  659. What we saw and heard that happened to

  660. Israel by the hands of Hamas on October

  661. 7th a few years ago was shocking to us,

  662. jarring

  663. to us.

  664. Images that won't be released

  665. because they're not things that we are

  666. accustomed to seeing.

  667. But what took place on that day was a

  668. normal outcome for ancient wars.

  669. Just read about the ancient Babylonians,

  670. Assyrians,

  671. and Persians.

  672. I'll not go into the brutal details

  673. because the Bible doesn't because I

  674. don't think it's needful for us to focus

  675. on the gore.

  676. But there's a reason Jonah hated

  677. Nineveh. And it was because of the way

  678. they treated Israel when they destroyed

  679. them.

  680. It was brutal.

  681. There's a reason why nearly every

  682. ancient war uh movie is rated R for its

  683. violence and gore. And I would tell you

  684. this, no modern movie measures up to

  685. what it really was.

  686. [snorts]

  687. In this particular time, the idea of

  688. saving the women and the children would

  689. have been seen as merciful.

  690. And yet Moses is furious.

  691. And in verse 17 and 18, he tells them to

  692. go back and kill every male among the

  693. little ones.

  694. That means the men who are children, the

  695. little boys.

  696. It says they were to kill every woman

  697. who was not a virgin and to only spare

  698. the virgin girls.

  699. At this point, our modern eyes and ears

  700. cringe.

  701. How can a holy and loving God

  702. effectively call for the genocide of an

  703. entire people group? I'm going to make

  704. it clear that this particular instance

  705. is not a total genocide

  706. because of the fact that this is five

  707. tribes of the Midionites, not all of

  708. them. [snorts] We're going to make that

  709. case. But the reality is is when we go

  710. into the conquest of Joshua,

  711. God is going to command them to utterly

  712. kill everyone and save alive nothing

  713. that breathes.

  714. [snorts]

  715. Does God hate ethnic peoples?

  716. Does God call for the obliteration and

  717. genocide of entire families in a way

  718. that is unjust and immoral?

  719. There's a world today that struggles to

  720. believe in God because that's what they

  721. think.

  722. [snorts]

  723. And we as believers

  724. need to know how to respond to them.

  725. And I want to make you aware of the

  726. fact, as if you're already not, that

  727. though you respond as biblically as

  728. possible, if people are looking for a

  729. reason to hate God, they sure will find

  730. it.

  731. But I want you to rest assured in your

  732. faith that God is holy and God is just

  733. and God makes all things right.

  734. I want to build a case in this message

  735. that I believe is consistent in

  736. scripture and it contains two key

  737. truths. Number one, God does not

  738. discriminately

  739. nor arbitrarily judge ethnic peoples.

  740. God does not select a certain group of

  741. people and say, "I hate you and

  742. therefore I'm wiping you out." That's

  743. not who God is. Truth number two,

  744. God indiscriminately

  745. and justly judges wicked

  746. people.

  747. God does do that.

  748. It doesn't matter what people group

  749. you're from, what language you speak,

  750. what skin color you have.

  751. God judges sin.

  752. It is just, it is right, and it is

  753. across the board.

  754. Let me point to some things, five facts

  755. that I believe reveal these two truths.

  756. Number one, fact one, God already judge

  757. 24,000 Israelites

  758. by plague.

  759. Did God hate Israel?

  760. No. That was his people.

  761. Then why did he judge them?

  762. Because they sinned wickedly.

  763. Because they committed adultery

  764. and child prostitution.

  765. because they ate a covenantal meal with

  766. a God who is worshiped that way.

  767. He judged them for their sin.

  768. Fact number two, this is not a complete

  769. annihilation of the Midionite people.

  770. [snorts]

  771. As I mentioned, the Midionites were

  772. nomadic tribe dispersed throughout the

  773. region of the Sinai Peninsula through

  774. Arabia, through Moab, and uh even into

  775. parts of Canaan as well. The Midionites

  776. of Canaan are still present to oppress

  777. Israel during the days of the judges.

  778. How is that possible if every one of the

  779. Midianite men was killed across their

  780. people group? [snorts]

  781. But then also

  782. we find that uh this was a targeted

  783. uh this this was targeted specifically

  784. at those tribes associated with Moab. If

  785. we go back to chapter 25, Bailac, the

  786. king of Moab, called together the elders

  787. of the Midionites,

  788. that is most likely referring to these

  789. five kings. One of them is mentioned as

  790. his daughter Cosby was the one brought

  791. before the congregation and before the

  792. tabernacle to commit this great

  793. wickedness and she was killed and the

  794. atonement was made. It is her father who

  795. is killed as a king or a prince in this

  796. text. And so I submit to you that it was

  797. targeted specifically at those tribes

  798. who latched in with Moab and were

  799. involved in this sin, this seduction.

  800. Fact number three, God did not hate the

  801. Midionites,

  802. nor the Moabites.

  803. Do you know where the Midianites came

  804. from?

  805. Midian was a son of Abraham through his

  806. wife Coutura.

  807. Do you know where the Moabites came

  808. from?

  809. The son of Abraham's nephew, Lot.

  810. The Moabites and the Midianites are

  811. technically family.

  812. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, was a

  813. priest of Midian. You know what that

  814. means? Moses's wife, Zapora, was a

  815. Midianite from the Arabian region.

  816. His kids had Midianite blood.

  817. Jo Moses, remember, invited his

  818. brother-in-law, Hobab, who was a

  819. Midionite, part of the tribe of the

  820. Kennites. You would have had here. Okay,

  821. if you go to verse number eight, here's

  822. how they would have been identified. The

  823. Evites, the Rikomites, the Zurites, the

  824. Herites, the Rebeites, if you were

  825. referring to their tribe. Just like you

  826. have the the tribe of Judah, the tribe

  827. of Simeon, the Simeonites. That's how it

  828. would be for Midian as well. The

  829. Kennites was Jethro's tribe of

  830. Midionites. You know what happens? The

  831. Kennites are able to inherit some of the

  832. land with the Jud with the the tribe of

  833. Judah and the Simeonites.

  834. Does that indicate to you that God just

  835. had arbitrary hatred for the Midionites

  836. because they were not Israelites? No,

  837. absolutely not.

  838. >> [snorts]

  839. >> In fact,

  840. God never told Israel to attack the

  841. Midionites in their conquest.

  842. And God directly told Israel not to

  843. meddle with the Moabites, that he would

  844. not give them the land of the Moabites

  845. because he had promised it to the sons

  846. of Lot, Moab and Ammon.

  847. And so that indicates to us that God was

  848. actually merciful to them in spite of

  849. the fact that they worshiped demonic

  850. gods as well. in spite of the fact that

  851. they had a host of immorality. God was

  852. not yet ready to judge them. They had

  853. not yet reached a level where the cup of

  854. his wrath was full. And so he was giving

  855. them time. And he was giving them mercy

  856. that maybe the the presence of Israel in

  857. the land of Canaan would serve as a

  858. witness to their brothers Midian and

  859. Moab and turn them back to Yahweh their

  860. God. God was actually being merciful to

  861. them. Well, then what changed? The

  862. Moabites and the Midionites inserted

  863. themselves into the equation by hiring

  864. Balum. And now through this matter of

  865. peor,

  866. they have tried to curse Israel and now

  867. they've seduced Israel into sin and

  868. idolatry. And that is what brought God's

  869. wrath to the full

  870. where he now calls them to judge the

  871. Midionites. That's fact number three.

  872. Fact number four,

  873. God judged Midian, therefore

  874. for their sin and not for their

  875. ethnicity.

  876. [snorts]

  877. The men are killed because of their

  878. roles in leading the people into sin.

  879. God holds men responsible for their

  880. families.

  881. >> [snorts]

  882. >> The non-virgin women are killed because

  883. Moses says in verse 16, "Behold, these

  884. caused the children of Israel through

  885. the council of Balum to commit trespass

  886. against the Lord in the matter of Peor,

  887. and there was a plague among the

  888. congregation of the Lord." these

  889. non-virgin women in the way that they

  890. dressed, in the way that they acted, in

  891. the way that they seduced these men into

  892. their sin, which led to 24,000 deaths?

  893. They must be held responsible

  894. is the reason why. If they live, what

  895. keeps them from doing not doing it

  896. again?

  897. And then you have the males among the

  898. little ones. the boy children. What is

  899. with this?

  900. Well, when you study the culture, the

  901. reality is that in a war culture like

  902. this, when those boys grow up, their

  903. responsibility

  904. is to avenge the blood of their fathers.

  905. But here's the thing.

  906. God's vengeance

  907. does not need to be avenged

  908. because God's vengeance is perfect.

  909. God's vengeance is just. God's vengeance

  910. is holy. The Midianites came in with all

  911. of their sinful ways and seduced Israel

  912. into spiritual adultery against God. And

  913. the punishment of adultery is death. And

  914. therefore the Israelites who committed

  915. adultery died. And the Midianites who

  916. committed adultery died as well. And you

  917. have the the 12,000 of Israel that

  918. represents the whole 12 tribes of

  919. Israel. That this this nation for the

  920. 24,000 who died, the whole nation is

  921. commissioned by God to avenge the blood

  922. of their fathers and their brothers who

  923. were seduced into this sin by the

  924. Midionites.

  925. And when God commands them to kill even

  926. the little boys,

  927. God is saying, "My judgment is final.

  928. There is no coming back

  929. when I judge

  930. for the seduction

  931. of my people."

  932. And to this, the world would object.

  933. Who is God

  934. to kill these little children

  935. before they've even done any of that?

  936. And that brings us to fact number five.

  937. Only God and God alone has perfect and

  938. infinite knowledge

  939. of the past, of the present, and of the

  940. future.

  941. God knew what those boys would do. And

  942. let me just say it this way. God knew

  943. what those boys had already done.

  944. God knew how they were being brought up

  945. in this system. And God knew the lust of

  946. their own hearts. And God knew the

  947. prostitution that they would practice.

  948. And God knew the rape that they would

  949. practice. And God knew the warfare that

  950. they would wage as a wicked country. No,

  951. God God knows what every man will do.

  952. God knows what every man has uh does and

  953. what every man has done. And that makes

  954. him alone qualified to make this

  955. command.

  956. You know what that means?

  957. Unless Israel has a direct command from

  958. God, they cannot act in this way.

  959. And certainly the world that is without

  960. God has no permission from God to act

  961. this way. And if God's people, the New

  962. Testament church, has no command from

  963. God, then we cannot act that way either.

  964. Only God has perfect knowledge.

  965. And so we know that this is not

  966. arbitrary and indiscriminate genocide

  967. because God judged his own people for

  968. their sin first.

  969. It was not a complete annihilation of

  970. the Midionite people. God did not hate

  971. the Midionites. And God is judging them

  972. for their sin, not their ethnicity

  973. according to his perfect knowledge.

  974. And therefore, we gather that God does

  975. not discriminately or arbitrarily judge

  976. ethnic peoples.

  977. Rather, he indiscriminately and justly

  978. judges wicked people.

  979. And this argument, you might call it,

  980. carries its water throughout the

  981. conquest narrative.

  982. God does not judge the Canaanite tribes

  983. because of their ethnicity,

  984. but because of their wickedness.

  985. Think of their history.

  986. Noah cursed his grandson Canaan

  987. because like his father Ham, he deci he

  988. delighted in the disgraceful.

  989. Is how we talked about it in Genesis 9

  990. when none of you were here.

  991. He saw the nakedness of his father drunk

  992. in his tent after the ark.

  993. And people try to speculate into what

  994. all is going on there. it it's not clear

  995. and there's certainly not an indication

  996. that there was a homosexual act. What

  997. the indication seems to be is that Ham

  998. joked about his naked father passed out

  999. in his tent and his brothers walked

1000. backwards holding a covering and laid it

1001. over him. Why? Because they did not

1002. delight in the disgraceful like their

1003. brother Ham did. And indications are

1004. Noah saw the same tendencies in his son

1005. Canaan and he said, "Cursed be Canaan."

  1006. And evidently

1007. he c this pattern of delighting in the

  1008. disgraceful continued in Canaan's

1009. descendants until sodomy and child

1010. prostitution and beastiality and child

1011. sacrifice became a part of the

  1012. idolatrous worship of Baal.

1013. The things that they did are

  1014. unspeakable.

1015. Paul said that we should be ashamed of

1016. the things that the wicked do in

  1017. darkness.

1018. And so I would imagine that the Bible

1019. doesn't even scratch the surface of all

1020. the wickedness of the Canaanite people.

1021. And on top of that, God was patient and

1022. long-suffering with those people, not

1023. willing that they should perish, but

1024. that they should come to repentance. He

  1025. brought Abraham

1026. and Isaac and Jacob into the land of

1027. Canaan to be a witness and a light of

1028. faith unto those people. Melchisedc was

1029. a priest king of the most high God

1030. living in Jerusalem among the Jebusites

1031. and they did not listen to him. God even

1032. sent Israel into Egypt for 400 years

1033. because of the iniquity of the Amorites

  1034. was not yet full.

1035. God gave these nations ample space to

1036. repent, but they refused. And now God is

1037. bringing Israel in to be the instruments

1038. of his justice upon these people, not

1039. because of their ethnic identity, but

  1040. because of their wickedness.

1041. And I want to say that the utter

1042. destruction that they were condemned to

1043. is the utter destruction that all of us

1044. are condemned to because of our sin and

  1045. our wickedness.

1046. [snorts] The only saving grace that we

1047. have is the same saving grace that a

1048. Canaanite like Rahab had and that is to

1049. repent of our sin and to believe on the

  1050. salvation of God.

1051. See, God sent Jesus to provide the

1052. atonement for our sin so we could be

1053. forgiven. So that instead of facing the

1054. finality of God's judgment in death and

1055. hell, we can have eternal life in God's

1056. presence forever. That is what God has

1057. done for us. And apart from the saving

1058. grace of God in Christ, all of us stand

1059. condemned. Not because of our skin

1060. color, not because of our language or

1061. our genetic code, but because we are

1062. sinners. Just like the Midianites were

1063. and just like Israel was. And the

1064. [snorts] wages of sin from the very

1065. first couple that sinned to the very

1066. last couple who will sin always has been

1067. and always will be death.

1068. That's what all of us deserve.

1069. There's nothing in us that makes us less

1070. deserving of what the Midianites

1071. received in this text. That's what has

  1072. to change.

1073. This skeptical world has a victim

1074. mentality as though we're not that bad

1075. of people. But the Bible paints a very

1076. different picture. That God is

1077. infinitely holy in ways that our sinful

1078. minds cannot grasp. His eyes are too

1079. pure to even behold evil. And therefore,

1080. sin cannot even dwell in his presence.

1081. That's why they had to offer so many

1082. blood sacrifices for the presence of God

1083. to be there. Because without the

1084. shedding of blood, there is no remission

1085. of sins. And that's why the son of God

1086. had to come and shed his innocent,

1087. perfect, spotless blood to cover our

1088. sins. He paid the penalty of death so

1089. that we could have life eternal. It was

1090. necessary for us. Why? because we are

  1091. sinners.

1092. The only reason the plague stopped in

1093. Israel was because Phineas made

1094. atonement. And the only way that we can

1095. be saved is because Christ made

  1096. atonement for us.

  1097. But like Israel,

1098. we still have an evil world that seeks

  1099. to deceive us. [snorts]

1100. And when we fail, we often face the

1101. immediate consequences. And our souls

1102. are left wondering how long until the

1103. Lord avenges us of this evil world. And

1104. this text tells us number one that God

1105. will avenge his people. You can trust

1106. it. And number two, when God avenges his

1107. people, it will be final.

  1108. It will be done.

  1109. No more seduction.

  1110. No more deception.

1111. No more l No more lure and pulling away

1112. from God. Nothing else drawing your

1113. attention away from God. Nothing else

1114. claiming to satisfy you more than God.

1115. Nothing else claiming to be better than

1116. God. Nothing else claiming to be more

1117. powerful than God and greater than God.

1118. No, it will all be done. It will be

1119. final. But listen, it will not be a

1120. vengeance executed by our hands because

1121. vengeance belongs to the Lord.

1122. But what will happen is the scroll of

  1123. God's judgment

1124. will be placed in the hands of the lion

1125. of the tribe of Judah, the lamb as it

  1126. had been slain.

1127. And he will pour out his wrath and his

1128. judgment upon this evil world. And the

1129. Bible says that death and hell will give

1130. up their dead. And they will stand

1131. before a great white throne where the

1132. books are open. And they are justly

1133. judged for every evil work and for every

1134. seductive practice. And for every way

1135. they gave themselves over to the serpent

1136. and the great red dragon. And they will

1137. be judged for their sin and for all of

1138. those things and be cast into the lake

1139. of fire. Death will be done.

  1140. every evil king,

1141. every false prophet, every false

1142. religion, every demon, and that old

1143. serpent, the devil will be cast into the

1144. lake of fire. I'm telling you believers,

1145. God's vengeance will come. And when it

1146. comes, it will be final.

1147. Just as God avenged the Midionites, when

1148. Christ returns, he will avenge his

1149. people from their enemies by condemning

1150. their enemies to final judgment.

  1151. [snorts]

1152. This evil world often leaves us

1153. frustrated by its evil and seductive

  1154. practices.

  1155. >> [snorts]

1156. >> And far too often we read in the

1157. headlines about another pastor who's

  1158. succumbed to seduction.

1159. We find out about another church member

1160. who's been lured back into alcohol or

1161. into an adulterous relationship. Another

1162. marriage has been destroyed by

1163. pornography. We hear about it and you

1164. know what? Sometimes it could be you or

1165. it could be me who has been seduced into

1166. sin and our hearts groan as we wallow in

1167. the consequences. When will God avenge

  1168. us of this seduction?

1169. First of all, whatever the seduction may

1170. be, it does not absolve us of guilt.

1171. And as long as we play the blame game,

1172. we will never overcome it.

1173. How do we overcome this evil world? How

1174. do we overcome sin in our lives? It is

1175. only by the blood of Jesus Christ.

1176. We must repent. We must confess. We must

1177. recognize that our offense is against

1178. God and he's the only one worthy of

  1179. vengeance.

1180. But then you know what? We can trust

1181. that his vengeance will come

1182. that he will execute it upon evil once

1183. and for all. This text reminds us that

1184. although God's judgment is delayed,

1185. it will come. And when it comes, it will

  1186. be final. [snorts]

1187. If not for the blood of Jesus, all of us

1188. would fall under the final judgment. Can

1189. I ask tonight, will you

1190. will you fall in the final judgment?

1191. The only difference between those who

1192. stand and those who fall in the judgment

1193. day is whether or not your faith is in

  1194. Christ.

1195. Only he could make the perfect atonement

1196. for all of your sin. And if you'll trust

1197. in him tonight, all your sins can be

1198. forgiven. You can have eternal life. You

1199. can be freed from the judgment of sin,

1200. death, and hell. And he will deliver you

  1201. if you'll believe. Let's pray.

1202. Our heavenly father, our souls do groan.

1203. As Paul said, all creation groanth

  1204. at this evil world.

1205. And we know that we are sinners. And we

1206. know that there's enough in us to wander

  1207. far astray from you.

1208. But we all just get tired of the world

1209. trying to suck us back in under its evil

  1210. spell.

1211. And I'm thankful that we can have the

  1212. hope

1213. that one day vengeance will come.

1214. And so we lift our eyes [music] unto

  1215. you.

1216. And we ask that Christ with all of his

1217. power and all of his strength

1218. to deliver us from this [music] ungodly

  1219. present world

1220. that we might live holy and unblamably

1221. in your [music] sight before a world

  1222. that needs Jesus.

  1223. And so our cries

  1224. long for deliverance [music]

1225. and I'm thankful that we can trust that

  1226. it will come.

1227. I pray for those who may not know Christ

1228. as [music] their savior that they would

1229. believe on him today and be forever free

  1230. in Christ.

  1231. Thank you [music]

  1232. for being our avenger.

1233. And that as we await, we have [music]

1234. this promise from you. And it's in Jesus

1235. name that we give you the praise.
