  1. And I'll ask you to take your Bibles and

  2. turn to Acts chapter 19. You can remain

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  3. standing as we read our text together

  4. from Acts chapter 19. And then we'll

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  5. have you be seated at that point.

  6. As we come to Acts chapter 19, we're

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  7. going to close out the chapter today.

  8. And we've seen thus far God's done a

  9. very powerful work in Ephesus.

  10. The church was established there on the

  11. clear and consistent teaching of the

  12. word of God. And what it resulted in was

  13. the decline in the magic oult. And what

  14. we're going to see in our text today is

  15. that the power of Christ also leads to

  16. the decline of idolatry.

  17. And so we're going to read verse 21

  18. through verse 41.

  19. Acts chapter 19 verse 21.

    Acts 19:21

  20. After these things were ended, Paul

  21. purposed in the spirit when he had

  22. passed through Macedonia and Teaya to go

  23. to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been

  24. there, I must also see Rome." So he sent

  25. into Macedonia two of them that

  26. ministered unto him, Teimoththeus and

  27. Aras. But he himself stayed in Asia for

  28. a season. In the same time, there arose

  29. no small stir about that way. That way

  30. refers to the Christian movement. Says

  31. in verse 24, "For certain ma a certain

  32. man named Demetrius, a silver smith,

  33. which made silver shrines to Diana,

  34. brought no small gain unto the

  35. craftsmen, whom he called together with

  36. the workers of like occupation, and

  37. said, Sir, ye know that by this craft we

  38. have our wealth. Moreover, ye see and

  39. hear that not alone at Ephesus, but

  40. almost throughout all Asia, this Paul

  41. hath persuaded and turned away much

  42. people, saying, that they be no gods

  43. which are made with hands, so that not

  44. only this, our craft is in danger to be

  45. set at not, but also that the temple of

  46. the great goddess Diana should be

  47. despised, and her magnificence should be

  48. destroyed, whom all Asia and the world

  49. worshipeth.

  50. And when they heard these sayings, they

  51. were full of wrath and cried out,

  52. saying, "Great is Diana of the

  53. Ephesians." And the whole city was

  54. filled with confusion. And having caught

  55. Gaes and Aristarus, men of Macedonia,

  56. Paul's companions in travel, they rushed

  57. with one accord into the theater. And

  58. when Paul would have entered in unto the

  59. people, the disciples suffered him not.

  60. and certain of the chief of Asia, which

  61. were his friends, sent unto him,

  62. desiring him, that he would not

  63. adventure himself into the theater. Some

  64. therefore cried one thing, and some

  65. another, for the assembly was confused,

  66. and the more part knew not, wherefore

  67. they were come together. And they drew

  68. Alexander out of the multitude, and the

  69. Jews putting him forward. And Alexander

  70. beckoned with the hand, and would have

  71. made his defense unto the people. But

  72. when they knew that he was a Jew, all

  73. with one voice about the space of two

  74. hours cried out, "Great is Diana of the

  75. Ephesians." And when the town clerk had

  76. appeased the people, he said, "Ye men of

  77. Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth

  78. not how that the city of the Ephesians

  79. is a worshshiper of the great goddess

  80. Diana, and of the image which fell down

  81. from Jupiter? Seeing then that these

  82. things cannot be spoken against, ye

  83. ought to be quiet, and to do nothing

  84. rashly, for ye have brought hither these

  85. men, which are neither robbers of

  86. churches, nor yet blasphemers of your

  87. goddess. Wherefore, if Demetrius and the

  88. craftsmen which are with him, have a

  89. manner a matter against any man, the law

  90. is open, and there are deputies, let

  91. them imple one another. But if you

  92. inquire anything concerning other

  93. matters, it shall be determined in a

  94. lawful assembly. For we are in danger to

  95. be called in question for this day's

  96. uproar, there being no cause whereby we

  97. may give an account of this concourse.

  98. And when he had thus spoken, he

  99. dismissed the assembly.

  100. The title of this morning's message is

  101. reshaping the identity of a city.

  102. reshaping the identity of a city. Let's

  103. pray and ask God to bless his word one

  104. more time.

  105. Our father, we need the help and

  106. guidance of your holy spirit to

  107. understand the truth of your word. I

  108. pray that you would give clarity.

  109. I pray that you would bring conviction

  110. that we would truly understand and

  111. believe and apply the words of this

  112. text.

  113. I pray that as believers we would be

  114. strengthened in our conviction for

  115. evangelism.

  116. And I pray for the lost that they would

  117. be convicted of the grace and mercy of

  118. Jesus Christ that they too might be

  119. saved, forgiven, and forever changed.

  120. It's in Jesus name I ask. Amen. Thank

  121. you for standing in honor of God's word.

  122. You may be seated.

  123. Major cities are often identified by

  124. what they're known for. I want you to

  125. think about what Los Angeles is known

  126. for. Hollywood, right? Disney, the

  127. Lakers, of course. In Washington DC, it

  128. might be government, monuments, and

  129. museums. in Detroit, cars,

  130. manufacturing.

  131. Nashville is synonymous with country

  132. music, right? San Francisco with Silicon

  133. Valley and the 49ers.

  134. For Boulder, it could be a number of

  135. things. Of course, at the top of the

  136. list would probably be the Flat Irons.

  137. That's kind of our staple. Everybody

  138. recognizes that that comes from Boulder.

  139. We're known for hiking trails, for bike

  140. lanes, and for the buffaloos.

  141. But I want to draw our attention this

  142. morning to one particular fact that is

  143. well known across the country. And that

  144. is that Boulder is known as one of the

  145. least religious cities in all of

  146. America.

  147. Top three for the last 20 or 30 years.

  148. More than 65%

  149. within our city limits identify as

  150. non-religious altogether.

  151. Out of that minority,

  152. less than 2% are what we might call

  153. gospelbelving Christians. That eternal

  154. salvation and the forgiveness of sin is

  155. by grace alone through faith alone in

  156. Christ alone. Not of works, not of

  157. sacrament, not of baptism, but of Jesus

  158. Christ alone. Less than 2%.

  159. That means that in the city limits of

  160. Boulder, there are less than 2500

  161. bornagain Christians.

  162. That might seem astounding because we do

  163. recognize that there is some gospel

  164. influence here and there are some good

  165. gospel preaching churches in Boulder.

  166. But consider this for a moment that in

  167. our congregation

  168. less than 30% of us live in the city

  169. limits of Boulder. And if that's true of

  170. our church, it's bound to be true of

  171. other churches here in Boulder as well.

  172. Boulder's identity would be

  173. overwhelmingly defined as non-religious.

  174. And so we might ask,

  175. can Boulder's identity

  176. ever be reshaped from non-religious

  177. to Christian?

  178. Is it possible for Boulder to ever

  179. become synonymous? Not with the Flat

  180. Irons, not with non-religion, not with

  181. the Buffaloos, not with bikes and trails

  182. and the recreation that we get to enjoy

  183. here. But what is it possible for

  184. Boulder to ever become synonymous with

  185. Christianity

  186. in the name of Christ?

  187. Or is it a lost cause?

  188. While it may not seem possible right now

  189. in this moment, what takes place in

  190. Ephesus gives us some real hope because

  191. Ephesus was known for the goddess Diana.

  192. In the Greek, it's Artemis.

  193. Ephesus was synonymous with this

  194. goddess. Her temple was four times the

  195. size of the Athenian Parthonon that we

  196. talked about back in chapter 17. larger

  197. than the size of a football field with

  198. pillars ascending 60 feet up in the air,

  199. many of which are still standing in the

  200. ancient ruins of Ephesus today.

  201. It was known for it. In fact, this

  202. temple was one of the seven wonders of

  203. the ancient world. And so, Ephesus was

  204. known for Diana. But what we find is two

  205. and a half years into Paul's ministry,

  206. Christianity has begun to reshape

  207. Ephesus.

  208. The occult has declined as we saw last

  209. week. And now we see that the silver

  210. idol trade was collapsing. And there was

  211. real concern that Diana and her temple

  212. would come to nothing. And you know

  213. what? Eventually it did. Because over

  214. time by the end of the second century

  215. Diana's or Ephesus was known as for

  216. major Christian influences.

  217. Some of the early church fathers were in

  218. Ephesus.

  219. John pastored in Ephesus. Timothy

  220. pastored in Ephesus. And so there were

  221. great leaders even in the initial days

  222. following the apostles.

  223. But then by the end of the 4th century,

  224. Diana's temple was in ruins. It came to

  225. nothing.

  226. Ephesus became known for Christianity.

  227. And if Christianity could reshape

  228. Ephesus then, I want to assure you today

  229. that it can re it can reshape Boulder

  230. even in this time. Maybe not in our

  231. lifetime, but if Boulder is ever going

  232. to be reshaped and known for Christ, it

  233. must begin here the same way it began

  234. there.

  235. How does Christianity

  236. reshape a city's identity? That's what

  237. this text shows us today. In fact, it

  238. develops it in a couple of different

  239. ways. First, it's going to show us how

  240. Christianity did reshape Ephesus,

  241. but it also shows at the same time how

  242. Christianity did not reshape Ephesus.

  243. And so, our message is going to be

  244. broken up into these two points. how it

  245. did reshape Ephesus and how it did not

  246. reshape Ephesus. Let's begin with how a

  247. city is reshaped. And here's what we

  248. find that Ephesus's identity was

  249. reshaped through conversion. It was

  250. reshaped through conversion. Before we

  251. get there, I want to note a key shift in

  252. the book of Acts as we have studied

  253. through this these first 19 chapters. In

  254. verse 21 and 22,

  255. it speaks of how Paul was purposed in

  256. the spirit to return to Jerusalem. And

  257. he said, "After I have been there, I

  258. must also see Rome." This follows a very

  259. similar pattern to Luke's gospel in

  260. chapter 9 when Jesus said when it says

  261. that Jesus set his face toward

  262. Jerusalem. And from that point,

  263. everything uh from Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  264. through Luke chapter 24 was moving its

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  265. way toward Jerusalem, culminating in the

  266. death and the resurrection of Jesus

  267. Christ and finishing with him sending

  268. his witnesses out to proclaim the gospel

  269. to the nations. And we see a similar

  270. shift here. Remember the outline of the

  271. book of Acts in chapter 1:8 says that

  272. they would be witnesses in Jerusalem,

  273. Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost

  274. part of the earth. We saw Jerusalem,

  275. Judea, and Samaria in the first eight

  276. chapters. And then going into chapter 9

  277. and primarily chapter 13 and on, it's

  278. about the uttermost part of the earth.

  279. But the primary focus for Theophilos,

  280. the man to whom this narrative is

  281. written, he is a Roman official.

  282. And so Luke is showing how the gospel

  283. came to Rome through Paul's ministry and

  284. through the witnesses of Jesus Christ.

  285. And so from this point forward, the

  286. narrative is going to shift toward

  287. Paul's journey first to Jerusalem where

  288. he is arrested and tried in the likeness

  289. of Jesus Christ and then is sent to Rome

  290. where the book ends with him preaching

  291. freely even while under house arrest.

  292. But eventually Paul will lay down his

  293. life there and be beheaded for the

  294. gospel. And so I want us to understand

  295. that now we are shifting toward the

  296. final section. But before Paul departs

  297. from Asia, he wants to visit and before

  298. he goes back to Jerusalem, he wants to

  299. visit the churches in Macedonia and

  300. Aaya. He wants to uh confirm them and

  301. strengthen them in their faith. And then

  302. he's going to head for Jerusalem. And so

  303. it tells us in verse 22 that he sends

  304. Timothus and Aras on to Macedonia and

  305. Neaya before him, but he stayed in Asia

  306. for a while. And notice in verse 23 that

  307. it says, "And the same time there arose

  308. no small stir about that way." You know

  309. what that means? This was a huge

  310. disturbance that took place particularly

  311. it broke out over the Christian faith.

  312. We'll not take the time to read every

  313. verse in this text again. We've already

  314. done that. And so I'll just summarize

  315. some of the story. There's a silver

  316. smmith by the name of Demetrius

  317. and he makes a profitable living

  318. crafting shrines for the worship of

  319. Diana. He calls a group of craftsmen

  320. together that are joined in the same

  321. occupation and he voices his concern

  322. with them over the economic impact of

  323. Paul's ministry.

  324. It was having a huge impact on their

  325. business. And he says to them, "Sers,

  326. you know that by that you know that by

  327. this craft we have our wealth." It says

  328. there in verse 26, "Moreover, ye see and

  329. hear that not alone at Ephesus, but

  330. almost throughout all Asia, this Paul

  331. hath persuaded and turned away more uh

  332. much people, saying that they be no gods

  333. which are made with hands."

  334. It's kind of like what we read from

  335. Psalm 115 this morning when the writer

  336. said that the gods of the idols of the

  337. people, the heathen, that they are gods

  338. made with hands. They have eyes but they

  339. don't see. They have ears but they don't

  340. hear. They have noses but they don't

  341. smell. They have a mouth but they can't

  342. breathe through their throat. They're

  343. idols. The word idol literally means

  344. vanity, empty. And so he's saying that

  345. Paul is is going around all of Asia

  346. saying that these gods that we worship,

  347. these shrines that we make out of silver

  348. every single day and every single week,

  349. that they're not really any gods.

  350. They're they're just they're fake. And

  351. so what is this going to do? But we

  352. understand this, of course, that this

  353. tracks with what Paul preached at Athens

  354. because he said there that we know that

  355. the gods of this world that are made

  356. with men's hands, God's not like that.

  357. God is not made with men's hands. But we

  358. also understand that Paul didn't just

  359. preach that idols aren't real, that

  360. they're not real gods. Paul preached the

  361. gospel of Jesus Christ. He preached that

  362. all are sinners and have come short of

  363. the glory of God. That there is none

  364. righteous, know not one. He has he

  365. preached that all of us in our sin stand

  366. condemned before a holy God. But you

  367. know what else he preached? that Jesus

  368. Christ is the son of God who is sinless

  369. and he came to earth and he lived a

  370. sinless life and he died on a cross and

  371. shed his blood to make an atonement for

  372. the sins of all mankind that we might be

  373. sprinkled clean from our sins that we

  374. would be forgiven and washed and made

  375. pure and holy. He said that that that

  376. Jesus Christ rose again from the dead.

  377. And that he proved his power over death,

  378. hell, and the grave. And and he called

  379. them to turn from their idols to faith

  380. in Christ so that they might be forgiven

  381. and have eternal life. That is what we

  382. call the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  383. And Paul preached that message in such a

  384. way that was so persuasive that

  385. throughout all of Asia, people were

  386. turning away from their idols and

  387. turning to faith in Jesus Christ. They

  388. were converted from idolatry to

  389. Christianity.

  390. And notice the impact this had in verse

  391. 27.

  392. Demetrius says, "So that not only this,

  393. our craft is in danger to be said it

  394. not, but also that the temple of the

  395. great goddess Diana should be despised

  396. and her magnificent should be destroyed,

  397. whom all Asia and the world worshipeth."

  398. So many converts were experiencing such

  399. real change that it risked running the

  400. craftsman out of business. Not because

  401. they they came and smashed all the

  402. idols, but because they simply stopped

  403. frequenting the shops. It was no longer

  404. important to them. They stopped going to

  405. the temple and giving offerings for

  406. Diana and worshiping Diana. And so they

  407. are desperately concerned that all of

  408. their craft and their wealth and the

  409. worship of Diana is going to come to

  410. nothing because of how many people are

  411. being changed by the message that Paul

  412. preaches.

  413. See, Christianity

  414. began to reshape Ephesus through real

  415. conversions that brought real change to

  416. people's lives.

  417. Let me ask you this. What does it look

  418. like when you convert a gas vehicle to

  419. an electric vehicle? Do you just take a

  420. sticker and slap it on there that says

  421. electric vehicle and boom, it's now an

  422. electric vehicle?

  423. No. You've got to remove the gas engine

  424. and all of its components and you got to

  425. replace it with an allect electric drive

  426. train. drive train drive train. Sorry, I

  427. said that three times and it still

  428. sounded wrong every time. You got to

  429. replace the whole engine that runs the

  430. whole system. And so too, real

  431. conversion is not just wearing the label

  432. of a Christian.

  433. It is when God brings real change to

  434. your heart. when you stop frequenting

  435. the places that you used to go and you

  436. stop buying the things and wasting your

  437. money on the things you used to waste it

  438. on. It's when you let the bottle go and

  439. you let the drugs go and you let the

  440. magic go and the clubs go like we talked

  441. about last week was happening here in

  442. Ephesus. It's also where you let the

  443. worship of the old gods go completely.

  444. That's what real conversion is.

  445. How do we know that? Because God

  446. promised first in J in Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  447. 31 and then in Ezekiel 11 and Ezekiel 36

  448. that the day was coming when man was so

  449. broken that he could not save himself.

  450. So God was going to send his servant. He

  451. calls him to be the Messiah of the

  452. world, the savior of the world. It says

  453. at that time that God would sprinkle his

  454. people clean from their sin. That he

  455. would remember their iniquities no more.

  456. But it also says that at that time he

  457. would remove their heart of stone that

  458. is hardened and rebellious and rejecting

  459. of God. And he would replace it with a

  460. heart of flesh. Can you imagine the

  461. difference between holding a stone and

  462. holding like a a a sticky figure that a

  463. kid has, you know, where you can maybe a

  464. squishy ball where you can move that

  465. around and it's pliable versus a stone

  466. that's rock hard. That's the image that

  467. God is getting. that that there here's

  468. the reason why we sin against God.

  469. Here's the reason why we rebel against

  470. God. Because we have a heart that is so

  471. hardened toward him that that there's

  472. nothing that can break us and bring us

  473. to be soft toward God. God says a heart

  474. change has to happen. I've got to remove

  475. the heart of stone and I've got to put a

  476. heart of flesh in there. But then God

  477. also said this. I'm going to put my

  478. spirit in them and my spirit will cause

  479. them to walk in my ways and keep my

  480. judgments. If you're in here this

  481. morning and you said, "All my life I've

  482. struggled to obey God." Let me ask you,

  483. have you trusted Jesus Christ as your

  484. savior? Because if you have not, you

  485. still have the old heart and that's why

  486. you struggle so hard to obey God. But

  487. through Jesus Christ, you can experience

  488. a full conversion and a full change of

  489. your heart where God removes the old

  490. system and puts in a whole new engine

  491. that drives a whole new way in your

  492. life. That's what God wants to do in

  493. Christ. Real conversion will bring real

  494. change to us for these Asian believers.

  495. It was putting magic shops and idol

  496. stores out of business in a way that

  497. eventually led to Diana's temple being

  498. left in ruins.

  499. Today,

  500. real conversions

  501. can put bars and dispensaries and clubs

  502. out of business.

  503. Real conversions can render other

  504. temples needless.

  505. Why? Because when you come to faith in

  506. Jesus Christ, it so changes you that

  507. they no longer get your business. And as

  508. more and more people convert to Jesus

  509. Christ, there are fewer and fewer people

  510. frequenting those businesses and

  511. therefore it renders them needless

  512. anymore. That's what was going on in

  513. Ephesus.

  514. How did this take place? It was through

  515. the simple conversion to faith in

  516. Christ. As Paul preached the word of

  517. Jesus Christ, as he proclaimed the

  518. gospel, people changed. Let me say this.

  519. Conversion doesn't mean you'll be

  520. sinless,

  521. but it does mean you'll be different.

  522. It'll bring change in your life. Can I

  523. ask you, have you been converted to

  524. Jesus Christ? I'm not asking if you go

  525. to church. I'm not asking if you've been

  526. baptized. I'm not asking if you if you

  527. carry the label on you as a Christian. I

  528. am asking you if you have been born

  529. again by faith in Jesus. If you have

  530. been born again of the Holy Spirit of

  531. God, is he changing you? Because in 1

    1 Corinthians 5:1

  532. Corinthians 5:1 17, the Bible says, "If

  533. any man be in Christ, he is a new

  534. creature. Old things are passed away and

  535. behold, all things are become new."

  536. Scripture knows no convert who does not

  537. change.

  538. And so you might ask today, well, how

  539. can I be born again? How can I have my

  540. my heart changed out to where I can love

  541. God and serve God? How can I have his

  542. spirit who changes my life? The Bible is

  543. very clear. You must repent and believe

  544. on the gospel of Jesus Christ. You must

  545. acknowledge before God that I am a

  546. sinner and I stand condemned before a

  547. holy God. and there's nothing I can do

  548. to change my own life. There's nothing I

  549. can do to be good enough after

  550. everything that I've done against God.

  551. And so, you have to recognize I can't

  552. save myself.

  553. But you must also believe that Jesus is

  554. the savior.

  555. You must believe that he came to earth

  556. from God, perfectly one with God, and

  557. died on the cross for your sin. that he

  558. paid the price for all your sin in full

  559. with one sacrifice. You must believe

  560. that he rose again from the dead and

  561. proved his power to give life to any and

  562. all who would believe. And the Bible

  563. says, "Whosoever shall call upon the

  564. name of the Lord shall be saved." You

  565. must repent of your sin. You must

  566. believe on Jesus Christ and you must

  567. call on him to forgive your sin and to

  568. save your soul. And friend, you can be

  569. born again today.

  570. God will forgive all your sin, wipe the

  571. slate completely clean. He will change

  572. your eternal destiny. He will give you

  573. eternal life. But he will also give you

  574. his spirit. And that spirit of God will

  575. begin to bring transforming change into

  576. your life. That's what we mean by true

  577. conversion. And when a city

  578. is reshaped for Christ,

  579. it's because its citizens are being

  580. reshaped by Christ.

  581. And so what that means for us today as

  582. believers is this. For people to be

  583. converted to Christ, they must hear the

  584. gospel of Christ.

  585. What did Paul do? He preached Jesus

  586. Christ. He told them, "The gods that you

  587. are worshiping are not real. They're

  588. stone. They're silver. They're

  589. materials. They're they're the work of

  590. men's hands. They're something that why

  591. let me just ask. Why would you fall down

  592. and worship something that a man had to

  593. make?

  594. Does that make any sense?

  595. Or why not worship a God who made all of

  596. us?" Because that's who the God of the

  597. Bible is. And so we're Paul calls them

  598. and we're called to call this world

  599. where we do have a majority of

  600. non-religious people here in Boulder,

  601. but we do also have people who worship

  602. at Buddhist temples and at Hindu temples

  603. and at Muslim mosques and and worship

  604. other gods that we are called to boldly

  605. proclaim that there is one God and that

  606. is the God of the Bible, the creator of

  607. the universe and there is one redeemer

  608. and that is Jesus Christ his son who

  609. gave his life on the cross and that we

  610. must turn away from the idols that we

  611. worship. ship and worship Jesus Christ

  612. alone.

  613. We're called to call this world to

  614. convert to Christ. And what that means

  615. is we must boldly and consistently

  616. engage people with the gospel.

  617. Whether that's through all church

  618. outreach here at Boulder Valley, or if

  619. it's personally sharing the gospel

  620. around town, if it's taking some tracks

  621. off our welcome table and distributing

  622. those throughout your week, or if we're

  623. talking about building some friendships,

  624. whether it's at a restaurant or a

  625. grocery store, or it could be joining up

  626. with a hiking or cycling group, just to

  627. build some relationships in the

  628. community.

  629. But here's the truth. As we

  630. intentionally share the gospel and more

  631. and more people turn from their sin and

  632. turn from idolatry and turn from

  633. unbelief to Jesus Christ, you know

  634. what's going to happen? It's going to

  635. begin to reshape this city

  636. to where the the bars are not one of the

  637. most lucrative businesses in Boulder

  638. anymore. To where the idol shops

  639. downtown have no reason to sell them

  640. anymore because nobody's buying them.

  641. We're not talking about trying to hurt

  642. people economically, but we're just

  643. talking about the change that Jesus

  644. brings that it can reshape the entire

  645. identity of a city in Boulder just like

  646. it did at Ephesus.

  647. Let me be clear though, we may not see

  648. it in our lifetime,

  649. and neither did Paul's generation.

  650. What you're seeing here are the seeds

  651. being sewn that would grow to the point

  652. where by the end of the fourth century

  653. Diana's temple's in ruins. The idol

  654. shops are nowhere to be found. And the

  655. same thing is true here that what we are

  656. doing in this generation is sewing the

  657. seeds in a very non-religious city so

  658. that one day they might grow to be

  659. changing the city completely and

  660. reshaping its identity to where Boulder

  661. is known for Christ and nothing else.

  662. Conversion is how the city is reshaped.

  663. But this text also highlights how cities

  664. are not reshaped. And that's what

  665. follows. While Ephesus was reshaped

  666. through conversion, what we see in the

  667. rest of the text is that its identity

  668. was not reshaped through coercion. It

  669. was not through coercion. Let's look at

  670. it together. Beginning verse 28.

  671. After Demetrius voices his concern, the

  672. craftsmen, it says, were full of wrath.

  673. And they started to cry out. They

  674. started to chant, "Great is Diane of the

  675. Ephesians." Great is Diane of the

  676. Ephesians. They're saying, "Paul's going

  677. to go out there and he's going to

  678. proclaim the greatness of this way of

  679. Jesus, of Christianity. We're going to

  680. go out and combat that by chanting great

  681. is Diane of the Ephesians." We've got to

  682. hold on to power. We've got to make sure

  683. that everybody stays here. Why? Notice

  684. the motivation.

  685. So that we can stay wealthy.

  686. That's their motivation. They don't want

  687. to go out of business.

  688. And so they begin to stir up this tumult

  689. in the middle of the city. And if you

  690. notice in verse 29, it says the whole

  691. city was filled with confusion.

  692. Nobody even What happens is you've got

  693. this group of craftsmen. I don't know

  694. how many, maybe 10, 20, 30, that they're

  695. all chanting out. And then other people

  696. start joining in and before you know it,

  697. this crowd is expanding, expanding,

  698. expanding, but it's bringing confusion,

  699. not clarity.

  700. And then what happens is they grab

  701. Paul's traveling companions from

  702. Macedonia named Gaes and Aristotarkus

  703. and they take them into a 24,000 seat

  704. theater and people begin to flock to the

  705. theater and and the crowd begins to grow

  706. and there's all this ruckus and crowds

  707. cheering and chanting all kinds of

  708. things and Paul is ready to go into the

  709. theater and try to defend these men and

  710. take advantage of the opportunity to

  711. preach Christ. No doubt. But the

  712. disciples said, "Paul, don't go in

  713. there. They're going to kill you." But

  714. it wasn't just the disciples. It tells

  715. us that there were some of the chief of

  716. Asia

  717. that were his friends

  718. through Paul's ministry over two and a

  719. half years. It touched everybody from

  720. the top to the bottom. And he even

  721. gained some friends among the chief

  722. people of Asia. That's talking about the

  723. elites. They're called the Asiaarchs.

  724. They were people who presided over

  725. events and and Olympics and things like

  726. that in the region or the province of

  727. Asia. So these were very highly

  728. influential people and yet Paul was able

  729. to become friends with them though it's

  730. not indicated that they were converted.

  731. He built relationships.

  732. He had friendships with some secular

  733. people in high places

  734. and they were concerned for Paul's

  735. safety as well because they persuaded

  736. him. They begged him, don't don't

  737. adventure into the theater. And so Paul

  738. did not. But I want you to look at this

  739. in verse number 33 or verse 32. It says

  740. this. Some therefore cried one thing and

  741. some another thing. For the assembly was

  742. confused, and the more part knew not

  743. wherefore they were come together.

  744. Let me let me give you a modern

  745. paraphrase of what that means.

  746. There's all this ruckus going on. It's

  747. like a downtown uh protest breaking out

  748. at Pearl Street. And the crowd just

  749. keeps growing bigger and bigger and

  750. bigger. Not because anybody knows what's

  751. going on, but because they just like the

  752. commotion and they like the the

  753. protesting and all of that. And then all

  754. of a sudden it moves down to Flesome

  755. Field. And you got a stadium full of

  756. people there and they're bringing these

  757. Christians before everybody and and

  758. everybody's cheering and you got this

  759. side cheering great as Diana and this

  760. side cheering something else and that

  761. side and it's just chaos going on. And

  762. it says nobody, the majority of them

  763. didn't even know why are we here.

  764. And so then it tells us that the Jews

  765. put forth a man by the name of Alexander

  766. to give a defense. Here's likely what's

  767. going on. The Jews, as we've seen in

  768. Acts, are ever more distancing

  769. themselves from the Christian movement.

  770. It's like, look, none of us really know

  771. why we're here, but I just want to be

  772. clear, it's not our fault. That's kind

  773. of what's going on here. And yet, when

  774. the crowd realizes this guy's a Jew,

  775. because they they hated the Jews, just

  776. like many people hate the Jews today,

  777. they they they they started they shouted

  778. him down. You can read it for two

  779. straight hours nonstop. They cried out,

  780. "Great is Diane of the Ephesians. great

  781. as Diana of Ephesians. I mean, a a crowd

  782. of thousands of people.

  783. This is utter madness going on right

  784. now. And yet, what we find is the town

  785. clerk steps up and he's able to quiet

  786. the crowd

  787. and he he calms them down by basically

  788. saying this.

  789. Everyone knows that Ephesus is a

  790. worshshiper of Diana.

  791. In other words, Ephesus is known for

  792. Diana. Everybody knows that. Nobody can

  793. deny that. And so, why are you worried

  794. about this? If I could give you a a

  795. modern paraphrase of this, quit freaking

  796. out and don't do anything stupid.

  797. You can read it. He says, "Be quiet.

  798. Don't be rash." You know, and so what

  799. what he says, here's here's really the

  800. highlight. Let's read it.

  801. In verse number 36, he says this,

  802. "Seeing then that these cannot be spoken

  803. against, ye ought to be quiet and to do

  804. nothing rashly. For ye have brought

  805. hither these men, which first of all are

  806. neither robbers of churches." What does

  807. that mean? Here's the idea. They're not

  808. going to the temple of Diana and

  809. stealing the idols and smashing them and

  810. destroying things.

  811. They're not rioting.

  812. They're not stealing from the idol

  813. shops. They're not creating a public

  814. disturbance. It also says there also,

  815. "Nor yet blasphemers of your goddess."

  816. You know what Paul wasn't doing? He

  817. wasn't going to the steps of the temple

  818. and saying, "This God is fake and phony

  819. and you shouldn't be here." And and he

  820. wasn't there protesting and picketing

  821. about the worship of Diana. That's

  822. something that all of them can

  823. recognize.

  824. Sure, Paul was, you know, where where

  825. was Paul teaching? Let me just ask you

  826. if you remember where was Paul teaching

  827. in the school of one Tyrannis.

  828. He had rented out a building to be able

  829. to teach people about Jesus Christ. And

  830. there in that building he said things

  831. like

  832. the idols that are made with men's

  833. hands, they're they're no gods. There's

  834. one God and he's the creator of the

  835. universe. You could read Paul's sermon

  836. in Athens to kind of have a a stamp by

  837. stamp comparison of what Paul would have

  838. preached. He said, "They're not really

  839. gods, but there's one God who created

  840. all of men, and we've all sinned against

  841. him. But he sent his son, Jesus, to die

  842. on the cross to give his life for us so

  843. that we could be forgiven of our sin so

  844. we could be saved and receive the gift

  845. of eternal life." That's what Paul

  846. preached in the school in an acceptable

  847. way.

  848. He personally talked with people as he

  849. made tents is what we've seen here in

  850. chapter 19. And so Paul simply preached

  851. Jesus Christ to people, but he wasn't

  852. out in the streets creating a ruckus. He

  853. wasn't bringing a a political revolution

  854. of any type. And so he recognizes this.

  855. You shouldn't do anything rashly here.

  856. These guys aren't robbing churches.

  857. These guys aren't blaspheming your

  858. goddess. And so he says, "Wherefore, if

  859. Demetrius and the craftsmen which are

  860. with him have a matter against any man,

  861. the law is open and there are deputies.

  862. Let them imple one another. But if he

  863. inquire anything concerning other

  864. matters, it shall be determined in a

  865. lawful assembly. Do you get what he's

  866. saying here? If anything illegal is

  867. going on, bring them to the courts.

  868. There's a way we handle this. But you

  869. know what the implication is here?

  870. They're not doing anything illegal.

  871. They're not doing anything disruptive.

  872. In fact, you want to know what we found

  873. in the book of Acts? those who create

  874. the mobs, the stirs and the problems,

  875. the civil unrest. You know who it is?

  876. The opponents of Christianity.

  877. They're claiming the Christians are the

  878. problem. And yet they're the ones

  879. creating the problem. In fact, that's

  880. what the town clerk says in verse uh

  881. number 40. For we are in danger to be

  882. called into question for this day's

  883. uproar, there being no cause whereby we

  884. may give an account of this concourse.

  885. And then he dismisses the assembly.

  886. I want to point this out to you. The

  887. town clerk's testimony verifies that

  888. Christianity did not take over Ephesus

  889. through a political revolution, a public

  890. disruption, or any kind of coercion.

  891. They were not forcing anyone to convert

  892. to Christianity.

  893. They were not saying turn or die like

  894. some religions do.

  895. So when you when you really think about

  896. this, what it tells us is that

  897. Christianity does not reshape a city's

  898. identity through coercion. It's it's

  899. through conversion, not coercion.

  900. See, Boulder will not be reshaped by

  901. Christians wreaking havoc in the streets

  902. or by protesting at the courthouse or

  903. vandalizing public spaces or or abortion

  904. clinics. That's not how cities are

  905. reshaped. Often times that creates more

  906. problems than it helps the matter. Now,

  907. we certainly have the right to

  908. peacefully protest. We have the right

  909. here in America to voice our opinion,

  910. but that is not what will reshape

  911. Boulder.

  912. We are not called to run into every shop

  913. on Pearl Street and tear down every

  914. colorful flag or to steal every magic

  915. book or to smash every idol. That's not

  916. what we're called to. And that's not

  917. what we see in the book of Acts.

  918. There might be some who say, "But what

  919. about the Crusades?

  920. What about settlers? What about

  921. colonization? Weren't Christians heavily

  922. involved in that or slavery or or or

  923. whatever?" Well, listen. I can concede

  924. that historically some Christian groups

  925. have used Old Testament scripture

  926. mistakenly to justify wars and violence

  927. and political revolutions. But what have

  928. we seen in the book of Acts?

  929. How has the kingdom of Christ conquered

  930. the Roman Empire?

  931. Was it through political revolution?

  932. Was it through chaos? Was it through

  933. rioting and disruption? What have we

  934. seen? No, you never see po Peter or Paul

  935. or Barnabas forcibly coercing people to

  936. convert. You never see them stir up the

  937. city. You don't see them smash windows

  938. or cause public disturbances. Here is

  939. what we have seen. Faithful public

  940. proclamation of the word of Jesus

  941. Christ.

  942. Because the power of Christianity

  943. does not lie in the strength of man but

  944. in the power of God's word about his

  945. son. Acts is about the triumph of the

  946. word of God. You know what we see at

  947. every turn? The word of God grew and

  948. increased mightily. We read it twice in

  949. this chapter.

  950. See, it's not us who reshapes the city.

  951. It's the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  952. Because the gospel is powerful enough

  953. that when idolattors and drunks and drug

  954. addicts and and people who are addicted

  955. to other things and the sexually immoral

  956. that that people that are that are

  957. sinners, the gospel is so powerful that

  958. it's able to persuade them of its truth

  959. to where they believe it and they

  960. confess Christ as their savior and then

  961. they burn the bridges to their past.

  962. like we saw last week and like we see in

  963. this, they stopped frequenting those

  964. shops. They stopped frequenting that

  965. temple. They stopped giving their money

  966. to it. And by default, as people are

  967. converted to Jesus Christ, a city was

  968. reshaped.

  969. And it happens the same way today.

  970. Eventually, Ephesus was no longer known

  971. for idolatry,

  972. but for Christianity.

  973. And I want to assure believers today

  974. that may be disheartened by what's going

  975. on in our state and in our country. The

  976. sharp decline of religiosity.

  977. The way that even after 5 years of

  978. ministry, we seem to be making barely a

  979. dent here in our city. I want to assure

  980. you today that what happened in Ephesus

  981. can happen here. Because the word that

  982. they preached then is the same word that

  983. we preach today. And the same spirit

  984. that empowered them is the same spirit

  985. that empowers us today. And the same

  986. Christ who transformed them is the same

  987. Christ who can transform people today,

  988. including you, my friend. He can change

  989. your life.

  990. Christianity reshapes a city's identity

  991. through conversion, not coercion.

  992. Boulder doesn't need a political voice.

  993. It needs a faithful witness of Jesus

  994. Christ.

  995. I ask you,

  996. will you be that witness?

  997. Will you step out by faith and share the

  998. gospel with people in this community?

  999. Will you reach the more than 98% who

1000. have yet to be born again in Christ?

1001. Will you make all church outreach a

1002. non-negotiable date on your calendar?

1003. Will you take some gospel tracks and

1004. pass them out all throughout this week

1005. wherever you go? Are you willing to

1006. devote time to personally studying the

1007. scripture so that you can share the

1008. gospel to be ready and prepared to face

1009. the questions that so many skeptics ask

  1010. today?

  1011. Some people say, "I'm I'm I'm just I

1012. just don't feel equipped to share the

1013. gospel. Can I just ask you, do you have

  1014. a Bible?"

1015. Because all you need to do is read about

1016. Jesus to be able to tell somebody about

1017. Jesus. The gospel is very clear. The

1018. gospel is very simple. All you must do

1019. is study even for yourself. Coming to

1020. church is great. Having a Bible study is

1021. great. Doing disciplehip is great. But

1022. but I'm asking you today, are you

1023. willing to put the time, the effort, and

1024. the energy into knowing Christ so that

1025. you can then make him known to others?

1026. Because that's what reshapes the city.

1027. Are you willing to put yourself out

1028. there and get involved in some kind of

1029. community group that will enable you to

1030. build relationships perhaps even in high

1031. places? You want to know why we feed the

1032. police department lunch a couple times a

  1033. year?

1034. Well, we love him. We want to support

1035. him. But it's also allowed us to

1036. establish some valuable friendships with

1037. him to where I've been able to have

1038. personal conversations with our police

1039. chief who's not saved and with his chief

1040. of staff and with the deputy chief and

1041. with uh many others that are in the the

1042. the the 911 area of the police

1043. department. We've been able to meet our

1044. officers. We've been able to engage with

1045. them. Why do we do that? to build

1046. relationships and friendships with them

1047. in hopes of being able to share the

1048. gospel with them. If we do that as a

1049. church, let me ask you, why can't you do

1050. that on your own? Some of you have

1051. interests like cycling, hiking, pickle

  1052. ball, recreation. You've got you've got

1053. interests. Let me ask you, why not join

  1054. a group

  1055. intentionally

1056. in hopes of gaining friendships with

1057. people so that it might present the

1058. opportunity to share Christ with them?

1059. It might cost some money. It might take

  1060. some time.

1061. But shouldn't we use the resources God

1062. has placed in our hands to magnify his

1063. glory through Christ that he in the end

1064. we might hear, "Well done, thou good and

  1065. faithful servant."

1066. I think so. Cities are reshaped for

1067. Christ when citizens are reshaped by

1068. Christ. Can I ask you, is your life

  1069. being reshaped by Jesus?

1070. Have you trusted him as your personal

  1071. savior? Because only conversion,

1072. only a new heart and a new spirit spirit

1073. can break the chains that have bound you

1074. for most of your life. You say, "I've

1075. tried to get out of this. I've tried to

1076. end it. I've tried to even reconnect

1077. with God. I've tried to get back to my

1078. faith. I've I've tried all of these

1079. things." Look, you can do everything

1080. that you want, but what the gospel

  1081. preaches is done.

1082. It's been done by Jesus Christ. He has

1083. accomplished everything. That's why his

1084. final words from the cross were a great

  1085. cry. It is finished.

  1086. That literally means done.

1087. Out on the welcome table, we have some

1088. books that carry that title done. It

1089. shows you how Christianity is separate

1090. from every religion because every

1091. religion says do this and do that and do

1092. this and do that. And Christianity says

1093. Christ has already done everything

  1094. necessary.

1095. If you're here this morning and you say,

  1096. "I've been seeking change, but I can't

1097. seem to find it." Here's what the Bible

  1098. says. Acknowledge before God, I'm a

  1099. sinner, and I can't. I'm at my end. I've

1100. tried everything and I can't get through

1101. it. But I believe Jesus died to pay for

1102. all of my sin. And I believe he can give

1103. me the new heart and the new spirit that

1104. God promised. and I I believe he died

1105. and rose again. I ask you to forgive my

1106. sin and I ask you to save my soul. You

1107. know what God says? I will forgive you

1108. right here, right now. I will save you

1109. right here, right now. I will give you

1110. eternal life right here, right now. And

1111. I can break those chains if you'll fully

1112. surrender to me. God can do that today

1113. if you'll trust in him. It takes

  1114. conversion,

  1115. not trying.

1116. But you can be converted today through

  1117. faith in Christ.

1118. And what that means for us believers

1119. is we've got to preach Christ.

1120. I don't mean preach in the sense of just

1121. standing behind a pulpit at church. The

1122. word translated preach often means to

  1123. proclaim.

1124. It often means just to talk. What we see

1125. when when it talks about how Paul

1126. persuaded, you know what that word

1127. translated what it literally means?

1128. Converse with. It means he sat down and

1129. talked to people about Jesus. Any of us

1130. can do that. And you never know that as

1131. Boulder Valley Baptist Church gets

1132. serious about sharing the gospel. How

1133. that can bring so many converts that a

  1134. hundred years from now

1135. most of the bars in town have closed

  1136. down.

1137. The dispensaries have closed up shop.

1138. The clubs are done. Temples are trans

1139. transformed into churches a hundred

1140. years from now. Why? Not because

  1141. Christians rioted,

1142. not because we vandalized, not because

1143. we smashed idols, but because we

1144. preached Christ. And Christ was powerful

1145. enough to change so many hearts that

1146. they just stopped frequenting these

1147. places. And there was no more need for

1148. him. And Boulder is no longer known as

1149. the place you come to experience

1150. creation, but the place you come to know

1151. Christ. So Christians, preach Christ.

1152. Heavenly Father, we come before you this

1153. morning acknowledging that the power to

1154. reshape a city is not in us. It is in

  1155. your son, Jesus.

1156. And I pray that you would encourage us

1157. through this text and through what you

  1158. did at Ephesus

1159. to boldly proclaim Christ, to invite

1160. people to church, to take action in our

  1161. lives, to build friendships,

1162. to get to know people, and ultimately to

1163. share the gospel with them that they

1164. might too experience new life in Christ.

1165. I pray for those here this who might be

  1166. here this morning

1167. that they feel chained in darkness

1168. that maybe they've spent their whole

1169. lives bowing down to idols,

1170. bowing down to a bottle or to an needle,

1171. bowing down to sin and Satan.

  1172. And they've tried to escape. They've

1173. tried rehab. They've tried turning away.

1174. They've tried to get healed and get

1175. right and everything has failed,

1176. but they've not tried Jesus.

1177. And I pray that this morning they would

1178. experience the lifegiving hope of the

1179. gospel that Jesus brings to break the

  1180. chains

1181. to replace the entire system that moves

  1182. our lives

1183. to make them holy, righteous, and just

  1184. through Jesus.

1185. God, I pray that they would trust you as

1186. their savior today. In Jesus name I

  1187. pray.
