  1. Numbers 27 as we continue here in our

  2. series God's way in life's wilderness.

  3. Uh last time we covered the uh second

  4. census in the book of Numbers that marks

  5. the uh death of the entire previous

  6. generation that was faithless in the

  7. wilderness and a new beginning so to

  8. speak. starting where they left off

  9. where in this final section uh God gives

  10. them a census. God gives them some

  11. instructions. There's some narratives

  12. sprinkled through as we've seen

  13. throughout the book of Exodus and or

  14. Numbers. And as you go through uh

  15. Numbers, that's what you notice is it's

  16. like Israel is in God's classroom and

  17. he's teaching them and then they have

  18. some exercises and they fail some tests

  19. and he corrects them and begins teaching

  20. them again. And and that's what you see

  21. patterned throughout the book of Numbers

  22. from location to location. And now we're

  23. at the plains of Moab near Jordan by

  24. Jericho. That's where they're at here

  25. for the remaining part of Numbers as

  26. well as the entirety of the book of

  27. Deuteronomy. They're ready to go into

  28. the promised land. And uh I want to just

  29. remind us from the census in Numbers 26.

  30. If you'll look back at Numbers 26:52,

    Numbers 26:52

  31. it says this, "And the Lord spake unto

  32. Moses, saying, "Unto these the land

  33. shall be divided for an inheritance

  34. according to the number of names." And

  35. so I want to start off with this just to

  36. to pry this into our minds here as we

  37. come to Numbers 27.

  38. God had promised to give that generation

  39. that came out of Exodus an inheritance

  40. in the land of their fathers

  41. because of their faithlessness and their

  42. rebellion. However, they did not get to

  43. receive or experience that inheritance.

  44. But you know what God did? He promised

  45. then that their little ones would

  46. that all of that their so in other words

  47. the fathers didn't actually lose their

  48. inheritance

  49. their inheritance was just transferred

  50. to their children

  51. and what we come to in numbers 27 is a

  52. unique case that God needs to settle

  53. with the children of Israel as to how

  54. this land will be divided in this

  55. special circumstance. stance. So let's

  56. look at numbers 27 beginning verse one.

  57. Then came the daughters of Zilofahad,

  58. the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead,

  59. the son of Manasseh, the son of Meir,

  60. the son of Manasseh, of the families of

  61. Manasseh, the son of Joseph. And these

  62. are the names of his daughters, Mala,

  63. Noah, Hogla, and Mila, and Tza. Now this

  64. should be familiar to us because they

  65. were mentioned back in numbers 26 verse

  66. uh 33. It mentions that he had no sons

  67. but he had these five daughters. So now

  68. once the census is completed it's

  69. bringing us back to these women. So look

  70. at verse two.

  71. And they, the daughters of Zilofahad,

  72. they stood before Moses and before

  73. Eleazar the priest, and before the

  74. princes and all the congregation by the

  75. door of the tabernacle of the

  76. congregation, saying, "Our Father died

  77. in the wilderness, and he was not in the

  78. company of them that gathered themselves

  79. together against the Lord, in the

  80. company of Kora, but died in his own

  81. sin, and had no sons.

  82. Why should the name of our father be

  83. done away from among his family because

  84. he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a

  85. possession among the brethren of our

  86. father. And Moses brought their cause

  87. before the Lord. And the Lord spake unto

  88. Moses, saying, The daughters of

  89. Zilofahad,

  90. speak right. Thou shalt surely give them

  91. a possession of an inheritance among

  92. their father's brethren, and thou shalt

  93. cause the inheritance of their father to

  94. pass unto them. And thou shalt speak

  95. unto the children of Israel, saying, If

  96. a man die and have no son, then ye shall

  97. cause his inheritance to pass unto his

  98. daughter. And if he have no daughter,

  99. then ye shall give his inheritance unto

  100. his brethren. And if he have no

  101. brethren, then ye shall give his

  102. inheritance unto his father's brethren.

  103. And if his father have no brethren, then

  104. ye shall give his inheritance unto his

  105. kinsmen that is next to him of his

  106. family, and he shall possess it, and it

  107. shall be unto the children of Israel a

  108. statute of judgment, as the Lord

  109. commanded Moses. And so what what's

  110. going on here is that God promised the

  111. inheritance would be passed to the

  112. children. And the question now is you've

  113. got these five daughters that are very

  114. zealous about this. They don't want

  115. their father's name to be cut off. They

  116. don't want him to lose his inheritance.

  117. Not because he was not a sinner, but

  118. because he simply had no son. It doesn't

  119. seem right that his name would be erased

  120. just because he doesn't have a son.

  121. That's really the problem that's being

  122. brought here. And so what you what we

  123. can gather from this is that Israel,

  124. these ladies in particular, they want to

  125. know God's will for their family. They

  126. want to know what happens to their

  127. father's inheritance in light of the

  128. fact that he has no son. But this

  129. transcends only this family because

  130. there going to be others who have no

  131. sons. So, does the man's name get cut

  132. off? Does he lose his inheritance? This

  133. is what it's dealing with. God wants the

  134. inheritance to continue to go within the

  135. family line. That is God's will. But

  136. they must make sure they get God's will,

  137. God's way. And so, the title of our

  138. message tonight is God's will, God's

  139. way. Let's pray one more time and ask

  140. God to help us. Father, I pray that

  141. you'd please speak through your word

  142. tonight and give us clarity and

  143. understanding that we may know that this

  144. is not just a message for Israel, but

  145. it's a timeless truth for us today. So,

  146. we ask for your help in Jesus name.

  147. Amen.

  148. How devastating is it to come so close

  149. only to fall short?

  150. to come so close but fall short. To get

  151. to the conference championship

  152. only to break your ankle on one of the

  153. final plays and miss out on the chance

  154. to lead your team to a Super Bowl. So

  155. close.

  156. or to get to overtime of game seven of

  157. the Stanley Cup finals only to give up

  158. the cup clenching goal in overtime.

  159. You're just a split second away from

  160. glory and you'll never be remembered

  161. after it. It's just a split second. Or

  162. what about getting to the marriage altar

  163. only to be left standing alone?

  164. so close.

  165. I think of men in ministry who are

  166. faithful their entire lives and within

  167. months of retirement

  168. commit a moral failure lose their

  169. marriage and lose their ministry.

  170. You're like, they're they're in their

  171. 70s.

  172. They're this close. They've been

  173. faithful for a lifetime. But somewhere

  174. along the line in these last months, in

  175. these last years, they fell short. It's

  176. tragic. It's devastating to come so

  177. close to winning, so close to finishing,

  178. and so close to achieving your dreams

  179. only to fall just short. It's got to be

  180. an immensely devastating feeling.

  181. I can't help but imagine that that's

  182. what it felt like for a teenager when

  183. Israel first came to Kadesh Barnea when

  184. they were there on the borders of

  185. Canaan. They've made their way from

  186. Egypt through all the plagues. They've

  187. they crossed the Red Sea as like a 15 or

  188. 16year-old and saw God do all these

  189. amazing things and they've heard about

  190. the promises and they've seen the hand

  191. of God and now they're right there on

  192. the cusp at 18 years old. But their

  193. father's faithlessness

  194. caused them to be turned away from the

  195. promised land and to wander for 38 years

  196. as their grandparents and their parents

  197. and their uncles and their aunts

  198. perished in the wilderness.

  199. You were so close only to be turned

  200. away.

  201. One thing, if you are part of that

  202. group, one thing that's been solidified

  203. in your mind is probably this. I'm not

  204. living like my parents did.

  205. I don't want to make the same mistakes

  206. that they did. I I don't want my

  207. children to be turned away and to suffer

  208. as I have and to watch me and my

  209. brothers die in this wilderness. I'm not

  210. going that way. We're going to trust

  211. God. We're going to do what he tells us

  212. to do. He's going to lead us in. He's

  213. going to fight our battles. And he's

  214. going to divide the land to us. This

  215. next generation we're going to see is a

  216. generation of great faith. Though they

  217. themselves are not perfect, while their

  218. father's generation has been

  219. characterized by sin, evil, and

  220. rebellion, their generation will more or

  221. less be characterized by righteousness

  222. and faithfulness to do what God tells

  223. them to do. And they are the ones who

  224. inherit the land. They have faith. They

  225. have passion. They earnestly desire to

  226. lay hold of the promises of God to their

  227. fathers. That's really what we see here

  228. in Numbers 27.

  229. These five daughters, they are coming

  230. before Moses and the leadership with

  231. full confidence that the land is coming.

  232. And they said, "Give to us a possession

  233. among our father's brethren to carry on

  234. his name."

  235. And so what we find here is that they

  236. are diligently pursuing the promise that

  237. God had given them. They they are

  238. passionately seeking after God's will.

  239. They want to lay hold of God's will for

  240. their life. But what God makes clear is

  241. that the promised land is not theirs to

  242. take. It is God's to give.

  243. He determines who gets what. He

  244. determines where they inherit and how

  245. much they inherit. He is the one who

  246. divides the inheritance. And so God's

  247. will is for them to enjoy the land, but

  248. they must get God's will God's way. And

  249. I want to say to you that the same thing

  250. is true in our lives. That just as God

  251. had great things in store for Israel, he

  252. has great things in store for your life.

  253. That doesn't mean that life's always

  254. going to be easy. Just like we've seen

  255. with Israel, there are going to be

  256. battles to face. There going to be

  257. struggles they go through. There going

  258. to be times of doubt. There going to be

  259. tests of their faith. And and there will

  260. be in yours as well. But I hope you

  261. understand that God wants you to have a

  262. great relationship with him. One that is

  263. not clouded by fear, doubt, and guilt,

  264. but one that is immensely filled with

  265. joy, gratitude, and love.

  266. I hope you understand that God wants you

  267. to have a great marriage. That's his

  268. will for your life. He does not want

  269. your marriage to be miserable. He does

  270. not want every day to just be a

  271. miserable fight. He wants that marriage

  272. to be filled with joy. He wants it to be

  273. lifegiving.

  274. He wants you to have a great

  275. relationship with your kids. He doesn't

  276. want you to be alienated from them. He

  277. doesn't want you to struggle through

  278. that relationship. He wants you to have

  279. a good relationship with them.

  280. Can I say to you if you're in ministry

  281. that he wants you to have a fulfilling

  282. ministry.

  283. He doesn't want ministry, whether you're

  284. a pastor, missionary, or if you serve

  285. here in this church, he doesn't want

  286. your service to be a drag. He doesn't

  287. want it to be that every Sunday when you

  288. come to teach the kids, you're like,

  289. "Ah, here we go again. I don't want to

  290. do this." You know, that's that's not

  291. what he wants. No, he wants you to enjoy

  292. serving him. There are great things that

  293. God wants for you. Can I say to you that

  294. he has just the right job for you in

  295. just the right place at just the right

  296. time? He does. God wants us to enjoy his

  297. will. But just as Israel had to get

  298. God's will God's way, so must we. His

  299. will is not something we take for

  300. ourselves.

  301. It's something he gives to us.

  302. How do we get God's will God's way?

  303. That's the big question.

  304. As this new generation of Israelites are

  305. preparing for the conquest of Canaan, it

  306. begins with the new census. And God

  307. makes it clear that the land is going to

  308. be divided up to individual families

  309. based on the names of their fathers and

  310. the size of their family. That's what we

  311. read in Numbers 26. That's God was not

  312. not just uh counting the men for war,

  313. but he was counting the size of their

  314. families to know how to divide the land

  315. amongst their fathers. And so that's

  316. what is going on. But then of course

  317. this problem comes up with this man

  318. named Zofahad who had died in the

  319. wilderness with no sons. And yet God

  320. promised that their that that faithless

  321. generation, their little ones would

  322. inherit the land. But now because he has

  323. no sons, how can that promise be

  324. fulfilled? That's the big question. If

  325. God promised Zoofahad

  326. that his little ones would inherit the

  327. land, but he has no sons, will God's

  328. promise fail? That's really the question

  329. being brought to mind here. And so it

  330. presents this problem that will no doubt

  331. come up again with other men who do not

  332. have sons. What happens to their land?

  333. Is it a free-for-all?

  334. Is it first come, first serve? Who gets

  335. to claim that man's land? And the Lord

  336. resolves this problem by giving them a

  337. new law. A new law. And what it shows

  338. them is how they can have God's will as

  339. they inherit the promised land. And how

  340. they can do so God's way. I want you to

  341. see first of all that to have God's

  342. will, you got to want God's will. That's

  343. the first thing that we notice here

  344. about these five daughters. They wanted

  345. it. They they they come to Moses and

  346. Eleazar and bring their case uh before

  347. them and and they they want to uh they

  348. want to understand what's to happen with

  349. their father's inheritance. If you

  350. notice there in verse number three, they

  351. said this before Moses and all the

  352. congregation. our father died in the

  353. wilderness and he was not in the company

  354. of them that gathered themselves

  355. together against the Lord in the company

  356. of Kora but died in his own sin. And so

  357. what they recognize here that what this

  358. does it echoes back remember the

  359. rebellion of Kora and in the census it

  360. calls that back to mind again that you

  361. had those sons of Reuben um uh Dayan and

  362. Abram who gathered with him and remember

  363. how God judged them because of the

  364. rebellion. The earth opened up and it

  365. swallowed not only them but their wives

  366. and their children and all they had.

  367. That was God's judgment saying, "Because

  368. of this brash, high-handed rebellion

  369. against my leader Moses and my priest

  370. Aaron, you will not have an

  371. inheritance." He cut off Dayan and

  372. Abram's names from the inheritance of

  373. Israel.

  374. And so that's what happened with them.

  375. And these these ladies come before

  376. Moses. They say, "Our dad wasn't

  377. involved in that. He did not sin in such

  378. a way that that God judicially cut his

  379. name out. Rather, he died in his own

  380. sin. It was his own faithlessness just

  381. like the rest of the generation." But

  382. here's the problem. He had no sons. And

  383. so the risk now is that his name will be

  384. erased from the people of Israel.

  385. And yet God had made this promise that

  386. his little ones would inherit the land.

  387. And so they asked in verse number four,

  388. why should the name of our father be

  389. done away from among his family because

  390. he hath no sons? Give unto us therefore

  391. a possession among the brethren of our

  392. father. And so what's going on here is

  393. culturally the sons would carry on the

  394. name of the father. that the inheritance

  395. it would be known as Zafahad's

  396. Zealafahad's land and then the sons

  397. would carry that on. But when it comes

  398. to the daughters, they would marry into

  399. another family's inheritance. And so the

  400. the father would give a dowy an an

  401. abundant gift to his daughter and then

  402. his financial responsibility over her

  403. would cease. She would come under the

  404. care of her husband and her husband's

  405. father and their inheritance. And so

  406. that's normally how this would work. So

  407. if these five ladies are to marry

  408. someone else, you know what it means?

  409. They get to have inheritance still

  410. through their husband, but their fathers

  411. dies off. And that's what they're

  412. worried about. The word when you see why

  413. should the name of our father be done

  414. away? It literally means to trim. The

  415. idea is that that you've got the list of

  416. names here and his name gets snipped off

  417. the bottom. And so they're saying

  418. there's a real problem here of and but

  419. notice this that they're not on a power

  420. trip here. They're not saying, "Well, we

  421. we want something for ourselves."

  422. They're concern about the name of their

  423. father. It's about the fulfillment of

  424. God's promise to their father. What you

  425. see in these women is a heart of faith,

  426. believing the inheritance is coming, but

  427. also a passion for God's will to be

  428. done. It's for God's will to be done.

  429. It's for their father. And because then

  430. what would happen is if they receive the

  431. inheritance of their fathers and then

  432. they have multiple sons, then they could

  433. give that their father's inheritance to

  434. one of their sons and then he could

  435. carry on his name. And you know what

  436. ends up happening? Zilofahad's name is

  437. mentioned again in the Chronicles. That

  438. means that his name was not cut off

  439. throughout all of Israel's Old Testament

  440. history. It was preserved by what God

  441. does here. But what I want to point out

  442. to you is that these ladies want what

  443. God had for their father and for his

  444. family. That unlike their father and his

  445. unbelieving generation, they are

  446. speaking of the land as if it's already

  447. conquered. That's that's faith. It shows

  448. this generation is is built different.

  449. It foreshadows a generation that wants

  450. God's will. Unlike the previous

  451. generation who wanted to go back to

  452. Egypt, they want to go forward. And so I

  453. just want to say to you first of all

  454. that you ought to want God's will for

  455. your life. You ought to want God's will

  456. for your family to strive for and long

  457. after the kind of fulfilling marriage

  458. that God wants you to have. You ought to

  459. long for that. One that is loving, one

  460. that is selfless and lifegiving. Now,

  461. because we are fallen, we know that it's

  462. not going to be perfect. But God wants

  463. you to have a marriage where joy is the

  464. norm and conflict is rare. See, many

  465. times we've got that backwards. I want

  466. you to understand clearly today, that's

  467. not what God wants for you. He wants you

  468. to have a a marriage that is joyful. If

  469. you're single, let me just say that you

  470. don't want to settle for a a guy that's

  471. anything less than what God wants for

  472. you. Because if you settle for less than

  473. what God wants for you, uh you are going

  474. to have a hard time in that

  475. relationship. That man will not treat

  476. you right. He will he will try to

  477. control you rather than try to lead you

  478. according to God's word. But the kind of

  479. man that you want is one who will

  480. reflect Jesus to you. And if you're a

  481. single man, the kind of lady that you

  482. want is one who will respect you like

  483. Christ, like the church does to Jesus

  484. Christ. That's what the Bible speaks of

  485. that makes marriage work, a selfless,

  486. lifegiving relationship. And so you want

  487. to make sure that you want God's will

  488. for your life and not just yours. You

  489. want a job that not only meets your

  490. needs, but one that fully enables you to

  491. serve the Lord, to faithfully give to

  492. his work and to meet the needs of the

  493. gospel. I would also say that you want

  494. to serve in the ministry that God has

  495. for you. The place where you can find

  496. great joy in serving the Lord and

  497. edifying your church and reaching the

  498. lost. that there's no greater

  499. fulfillment than being in the Lord's

  500. will. That doesn't mean that that it's

  501. always that, you know, I grew up, you

  502. always hear that the safest place to be

  503. is in God's will. Well, sometimes God's

  504. will will lead you to the guillotine if

  505. you ask people like the Apostle Paul.

  506. And so, I'm not just going to say that

  507. if you're in God's will, everything's

  508. going to be perfect. Everything's going

  509. to be dandy. Everything's going to be

  510. rosy. But what you do have is the

  511. promises of God that you can cling to.

  512. That he'll be everything you need. that

  513. his grace will be more than sufficient

  514. for you. That he'll provide for your

  515. needs and he'll make sure that you don't

  516. go hungry and he'll make sure that you

  517. don't go thirsty. He cares for and

  518. provides for his own. You want to have a

  519. place that God has for you. You want

  520. God's will. I want to say that God is

  521. leading you into what's best and his

  522. will is worth pursuing just like it was

  523. for the daughters of Zilofahad. It was

  524. worth pursuing but also for the rest of

  525. the Israelites. Now understand that

  526. while what we have here is a ruling for

  527. the sake of these five daughters. Who is

  528. reading this all together? The children

  529. of Israel. And so God is even confirming

  530. here. The land is coming. And when it

  531. does, here's how you need to handle it.

  532. He wants them to pursue his will. But

  533. God's will is not something you can get

  534. your own way. It's something that we

  535. must get God's way. And so that brings

  536. us to number two, that to have God's

  537. will, you also need God's revelation.

  538. You need God's revelation.

  539. And the daughters of Zofha had it says

  540. in verse 5 that that Moses brought their

  541. cause before the Lord and the Lord spake

  542. unto Moses. You speak right. How nice

  543. would that be? If you're these ladies

  544. and you come before the Lord and this is

  545. beyond cultural norms. This was would

  546. have been very abnormal for women to

  547. come and demand an inheritance from

  548. their father. And so they come and then

  549. to hear God's approval. They're right.

  550. My will is not for this man's name to be

  551. cut off. My will is for it to be

  552. continued on. My will is for his little

  553. ones to inherit his possession. And so,

  554. yes, I want you, he says, give them an

  555. inheritance among their father's

  556. brethren, and thou shalt cause the

  557. inheritance of their father to pass unto

  558. them. And so, he he gives direction here

  559. that they are to receive the

  560. inheritance. They are to carry on their

  561. father's name. But then what we notice

  562. is that this doesn't just go for this

  563. single case. God gives a new revelation

  564. of how he wants them to handle the land.

  565. It says in verse number eight, "And thou

  566. shalt speak unto the children of Israel,

  567. saying, if a man die and have no son,

  568. then ye shall cause his inheritance to

  569. pass on his daughter. And if he have no

  570. daughter, then ye shall give his

  571. inheritance unto his brethren. And if he

  572. have no brethren, then ye shall give his

  573. inheritance unto his father's brethren.

  574. And if his father have no brethren, then

  575. ye shall give his inheritance unto his

  576. kinsmen that is next to him of his

  577. family, and he shall possess it. And it

  578. shall be unto the children of Israel a

  579. statute of judgment as the Lord

  580. commanded Moses.

  581. And so the re

  582. the reason that they need this law is

  583. because the land is coming. And because

  584. the land is worth pursuing,

  585. but it's a land that they want, but it's

  586. not a land that is theirs to take, it's

  587. God's to give. Therefore, to have God's

  588. will, here's what Israel must do. Follow

  589. God's word. That what God is saying here

  590. is that when a man dies without sons,

  591. his land is not up for grabs. His land

  592. is not to be sold to the highest bidder.

  593. You don't steal it. You don't cast lots

  594. for it. You don't auction it off. The

  595. only way to have God's will is to follow

  596. God's word. Anything outside of what God

  597. commands here will be considered theft.

  598. It'll be considered rebellion. It'll be

  599. considered sin.

  600. And so, the truth of the matter is this.

  601. To get God's will, God's way, you must

  602. follow God's word. That's what he's

  603. given us.

  604. Can I say that it starts with salvation?

  605. God is not willing that any should

  606. perish, but that all should come to

  607. repentance. The Bible says that God will

  608. have all men to come to the knowledge of

  609. the truth. And so that means that God's

  610. will for everyone is to be forgiven. And

  611. God's will for everyone is to be saved

  612. and to have eternal life. That is God's

  613. will. Listen, that is God's will for

  614. every single person in the city of

  615. Boulder and every person in the state of

  616. Colorado and in the United States of

  617. America and in Germany and in every

  618. country around the world. God's will is

  619. for every man, woman, and child to be

  620. saved.

  621. But that salvation and that forgiveness

  622. and that eternal life is no man's to

  623. take. It is only God's to give. And you

  624. can only have God's will if you follow

  625. God's word. He sent his son Jesus to die

  626. on the cross to atone for our sins. He

  627. raised him from the dead and he ascended

  628. into heaven and he seated Christ on a

  629. throne to rule and reign forever. And he

  630. commissioned his disciples to go into

  631. all the world and preach this gospel to

  632. every creature. That if you repent of

  633. your sin and believe in your heart that

  634. Jesus died for your sin and rose again,

  635. if you will call upon the name of the

  636. Lord, you can and will be saved. That is

  637. God's word. That is how you get God's

  638. will. God's way is through faith in

  639. Jesus Christ.

  640. He is the way, the truth, and the life.

  641. No man cometh unto the father but by

  642. him. He is the only way. We must then

  643. proclaim that one way that neither is

  644. there salvation in any other. For there

  645. is none other name under heaven given

  646. among men whereby we must be saved. as

  647. the apostle Peter said. And so we need

  648. to be sure that the message that we

  649. preach is not deviating from God's word

  650. because there's a lot of uh Christian

  651. circles that have perverted the gospel

  652. just as they had in Paul's day and why

  653. he had to write to correct it that they

  654. have said there are other ways to God.

  655. There are some who say that in the end

  656. God's love wins. And so it doesn't

  657. matter in this life if you place your

  658. faith in Jesus Christ when you die and

  659. when we all are gathered before him then

  660. everybody's going to see Jesus and

  661. they'll believe at that time and God's

  662. love will win out over his justice. I'm

  663. telling you that is not what the Bible

  664. teaches.

  665. Some are saying that you can get to God

  666. through all kinds of paths through Islam

  667. and through Buddhism and through

  668. Hindism. We're all just trying to find

  669. the same God in different ways. That is

  670. not what the Bible says. Jesus is the

  671. only way. And so, church, if we want to

  672. help people get God's will, we must

  673. bring them God's way. And that's through

  674. Jesus Christ.

  675. And so, to have the Lord's will, you

  676. must follow the Lord's word. And the

  677. same thing is true in your life as well.

  678. That if you want to truly have what God

  679. has in store for your life, you must

  680. follow his word.

  681. Let me just give a few examples that

  682. we've been talking about tonight. If you

  683. want to arrive at the marriage altar

  684. with your purity intact, then you need

  685. to set up some guardrails in your life.

  686. Guard rails that are patterned after

  687. God's word. You need to guard your eyes

  688. from wicked things. You need to keep

  689. yourself pure and flee fornication, as

  690. the Bible says. You need to set up some

  691. good boundaries for your relationships.

  692. If you want to be married, then like

  693. these five ladies, you need to bring

  694. your case before the Lord and you need

  695. to seek him and you need to follow his

  696. revelation, which by the way says, "Be

  697. not unequally yolked together with

  698. unbelievers." If that's true in

  699. business, don't you think that's

  700. certainly true in marriage?

  701. And so, if you're going to seek God's

  702. will, you must seek it God's way. And he

  703. has given us plain revelation for the

  704. kind of man, the kind of woman that you

  705. ought to look for in your life. And so

  706. if you want to have God's will, seek his

  707. face and follow his revelation.

  708. Can I say that if you want to have a

  709. fulfilling marriage, you might start by

  710. looking to God's word. It might do us

  711. well to seek what the creator of

  712. marriage says about marriage. Right? It

  713. sounds so simple and yet so often we

  714. want what we want no matter what God

  715. says.

  716. See, here's the truth. If your marriage

  717. is struggling, almost every single time

  718. it boils down to at least one, but more

  719. than likely both are failing to follow

  720. God's word. That's what it boils down

  721. to. She might be hyperritical of him and

  722. he might blow up at her. Neither of

  723. which, by the way, is a godly response.

  724. It might be that that he's selfish, full

  725. of pride. It might be that she

  726. constantly resists his leadership and

  727. treats him like a child.

  728. I don't think there's any man that likes

  729. being treated like a child. I don't

  730. think my son at seven years old likes

  731. being treated like a child. You know, no

  732. man likes that. And yet, sometimes after

  733. a wife has kids, she starts treating her

  734. husband like her child.

  735. Sometimes he probably acts like a child.

  736. But regardless, listen, regardless

  737. of how your spouse acts,

  738. God calls you to follow his word.

  739. And when both a husband and a wife are

  740. following God's word, you can have God's

  741. will. God's will is for you to have a

  742. wonderful, joyful, life-giving, faithful

  743. marriage. And you can know that God

  744. wants you to have it. And or you can

  745. know that you can have it because of the

  746. fact that God wants you to have it. God

  747. doesn't give us things that he wants for

  748. us without making a way for it to be

  749. attained. But he makes it clear to us

  750. that if we want to lay hold of his word,

  751. we can't just get it however we want to

  752. do it. We've got to follow his word and

  753. trust his word to guide us into his

  754. perfect will. And that's just as true in

  755. marriage as it is in anything else.

  756. It starts with following the Lord's

  757. word.

  758. If you want to have the kind of ministry

  759. that God wants you to have, it sure

  760. helps to follow his word.

  761. That as preachers of the gospel,

  762. it's helpful to base our preaching on

  763. the Bible.

  764. Because if we preach the word, we're not

  765. going to come up with twisted truth.

  766. We're not going to preach heresy. Why?

  767. Because we're going to be following what

  768. the word of God says.

  769. And by the way, if you follow the

  770. Bible's guidelines and qualifications

  771. for a pastor and a deacon, it's going to

  772. set up some things in your life that

  773. keeps you from stepping outside of those

  774. lines.

  775. And then sometimes our mind just goes to

  776. immoral issues. But the Bible says,

  777. "Don't be a striker either and not a

  778. brawler." Brawler doesn't just mean

  779. duking it out. Sometimes there are

  780. pastors that are harsh and mean and

  781. angry toward their congregation. But if

  782. we look at the qualifications of what a

  783. pastor is supposed to be, it'll keep us

  784. from lashing out at our members. It'll

  785. keep us having a loving relationship

  786. with them. It'll no doubt keep us from

  787. running off with other women than our

  788. spouse. It'll keep us within what God

  789. wants us to have in that ministry if we

  790. follow his word. It's true.

  791. I think every pastor and every

  792. missionary wants to have a successful

  793. ministry.

  794. We want to reach as many people as we

  795. possibly can for Jesus Christ. But if we

  796. have to depart from God's word to get it

  797. done, then we have really inherited

  798. something

  799. that we have taken for ourselves

  800. rather than inheriting it from God.

  801. Sometimes you might get a little

  802. impatient and take a job for yourself

  803. because it's the one that you wanted

  804. because it pays more because it's the

  805. one that's available and because you

  806. gave up on waiting for God to give you

  807. the right one at the right time.

  808. It's hard when you're struggling

  809. financially. I mean, we've got several

  810. people in our church right now that are

  811. looking for work, and sometimes you can

  812. just get to the point where it's like,

  813. man, I I got to have something. I got to

  814. have something. And so then you can just

  815. take the first one that's there. But I'm

  816. just calling our people that are seeking

  817. jobs right now to diligently pray and

  818. seek God's face and bring it before the

  819. Lord and trust his revelation in the

  820. process that he can bring you to the

  821. right place the right time that'll meet

  822. your needs that'll enable you to

  823. faithfully serve God and be able to

  824. continue to give to missions and things

  825. like that.

  826. See God to have God's will, you must

  827. follow God's word. His will will never

  828. lead you in a way that contradicts his

  829. word. And so that tells us that his word

  830. is always the place to start.

  831. If you're ever seeking God's will and it

  832. goes against his word, you can know it's

  833. not right.

  834. Here's the problem for these daughters

  835. of Zilafad. There was no ruling on this.

  836. If if God had made it clear that if a

  837. man doesn't have any sons, then you give

  838. the inheritance to his daughters, that

  839. they could have just trusted that right

  840. then, right there. But because they

  841. didn't, they brought it to the

  842. leadership of the congregation and he

  843. brought it before the Lord. There's a

  844. principle to be said there that

  845. sometimes it's good when you're in a

  846. bind and you're not sure exactly what to

  847. do and when God's word is not very clear

  848. to seek pastoral help, to seek pastoral

  849. counsel. The pastor is not the Holy

  850. Spirit of God in your life. God gave you

  851. the Holy Spirit to discern things. And

  852. yet, God gives pastors a certain unique

  853. gift to be able to lead God's people.

  854. And so, sometimes it's helpful to get

  855. pastoral counsel on that and to have

  856. them bring it before the Lord as well.

  857. They had Moses bring it before the Lord.

  858. And you know what the Lord? Did he gave

  859. them revelation. And you know what he

  860. called them to do? To follow it. To

  861. follow it. And God does the same thing

  862. in our lives. I genuinely believe that

  863. all of us truly want God's will.

  864. But sometimes we don't always have the

  865. faith to wait or the faith to seek it or

  866. to pursue it like Zofahad's daughters

  867. had. But what we notice is from the very

  868. start, this generation displays great

  869. faith in what God will do. They trust

  870. that God is going to allow them to

  871. inherit the land by his own power. And

  872. God is careful careful to show them

  873. through this example that to have God's

  874. will, they've got to follow God's word.

  875. And so must you. And that's true whether

  876. it comes to your salvation or if it

  877. comes to marriage, work, or ministry.

  878. God knows what is best for each of us.

  879. And if you'll bring your case before the

  880. Lord and seek his face and follow his

  881. word, you can have God's will, God's

  882. way. Follow his word. Father, we thank

  883. you for your word and I am thankful that

  884. you have given us sufficient revelation

  885. and your word is always the place to

  886. start. But we also recognize that

  887. sometimes there may be things in our

  888. life that your word does not give clear

  889. instruction for.

  890. But you have given us your Holy Spirit

  891. who causes us to walk in your ways and

  892. to obey your statutes, your judgments,

  893. and your commands.

  894. And I pray that as your people, we would

  895. diligently bring every case before you,

  896. starting with what is plainly revealed

  897. in your word, and for the things we may

  898. not be so clear on, to seek your wisdom

  899. through the help and leadership of the

  900. Holy Spirit, to know and to seek godly

  901. counsel as well.

  902. I truly believe every person in this

  903. room wants your will.

  904. And I pray that your word would just

  905. help us a little bit tonight to show us

  906. how we can have it by your leadership.

  907. Help us to follow your word. I pray in

  908. Jesus name. Amen.
