  1. We'll be in Numbers 26. I actually want

  2. you to start in Numbers 14. I want to

  3. just read a passage here that will help

  4. refresh our memories before we move into

  5. the final section of the book of

  6. Numbers.

  7. Once you found your place, if you'll

  8. stand as we give honor to God's word.

  9. Numbers chapter 14 is where we'll start

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  10. and then we'll move over to chapter 26.

  11. Numbers 14

  12. is the fallout of the bad report brought

  13. back by the spies about the land of

  14. Canaan, about their faithlessness, their

  15. disobedience, and their rebellion. And

  16. you'll remember that God pronounced a

  17. judgment upon that previous generation

  18. 38 years prior to where we are at now in

  19. the book of Numbers. And I want to just

  20. read a few verses beginning in verse 30

  21. that'll remind us of exactly what God

  22. said because you're going to hear some

  23. repeated statements from this as well

  24. that'll pertain to our text tonight.

  25. Numbers 14:30,

    Numbers 14:30

  26. the Lord says, "Doubtless, ye shall not

  27. come into the land concerning which I

  28. swear to make you dwell therein, save

  29. Caleb, the son of Japona, and Joshua the

  30. son of Nun. But your little ones, which

  31. ye said should be a prey, them will I

  32. bring in, and they shall know the land

  33. which ye have despised. But as for you,

  34. your carcasses, they shall fall in this

  35. wilderness. So, let's go now to chapter

  36. 26.

  37. And it's always our favorite part of the

  38. book of Numbers when we get to read a

  39. bunch of names in Numbers, right? That's

  40. what Numbers 26 is. It's the new census

  41. of the next generation. So, 38 years

  42. later, that entire generation has now

  43. died off completely. As you notice in

  44. verse one, it says, "And it came to pass

  45. after the plague." The plague goes back

  46. to chapter 25 and verse 9 when it says,

  47. "And those that died in the plague were

  48. 204,000."

  49. 24,000 people died in that plague. And

  50. it's almost like that was the final wave

  51. of death and judgment for the previous

  52. generation.

  53. And so now God is beginning with the

  54. second generation. The same way that he

  55. began the last generation at Sinai,

  56. which is with a counting up of the men

  57. that are able to go forth to war, as

  58. well as the Levites. But we're also

  59. going to notice that it points forward

  60. to the fact that it's time to go into

  61. the land. And then we'll see finally at

  62. the end of the chapter some statements

  63. that reflect what we read in Numbers 14.

  64. So, we're not going to read the entire

  65. chapter, 65 verses of a bunch of names

  66. and numbers. Uh, but we'll jump around

  67. here a little bit. Let's go and begin

  68. reading though in verse number one. And

  69. it came to pass after the plague that

  70. the Lord spake unto Moses and unto

  71. Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest,

  72. saying, Take the sum of all the

  73. congregation of the children of Israel,

  74. from 20 years old and upward throughout

  75. their father's house, all that are able

  76. to go to war in Israel. And Moses and

  77. Eleazar the priests spake with them in

  78. the plains of Moab by Jordan near

  79. Jericho. Take the sum of the people from

  80. 20 years old and upward as the Lord

  81. commanded Moses and the children of

  82. Israel which went forth out of the land

  83. of Egypt. And so now it's going to begin

  84. with Reuben there in verse five. and it

  85. will continue to give names and numbers

  86. as well as some of the random accounts

  87. and stories that we've seen in the book

  88. of numbers. Now, let's go to verse

  89. number 51.

  90. Verse 51.

  91. These were the numbered of the children

  92. of Israel, 600,000

  93. and 1,730.

  94. So 61,730

  95. people, men that are able to go forth to

  96. war. Verse 52. And the Lord spake unto

  97. Moses, saying, "Unto these the land

  98. shall be divided for an inheritance,

  99. according to the number of names. To

  100. many thou shalt give the more

  101. inheritance, and to few thou shalt give

  102. the less inheritance. to everyone

  103. uh shall his inheritance be given

  104. according to those that were numbered of

  105. him. Notwithstanding, the land shall be

  106. divided by lot. According to the names

  107. of the tribes of their fathers, they

  108. shall inherit. According to the lot

  109. shall the possession thereof be divided

  110. between many and few. Now in verse 57

  111. through verse 61, it's the numbering of

  112. the Levites, which will uh number as we

  113. see in verse 62, those that were

  114. numbered uh of them were 20 and 3,000,

  115. all males from a month old and upward.

  116. For they were not numbered among the

  117. children of Israel, because there was no

  118. inheritance given them among the

  119. children of Israel. These are they that

  120. were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the

  121. priest who numbered the children of

  122. Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan

  123. near Jericho.

  124. But among these there was not a man of

  125. them whom Moses and Aaron the priests

  126. numbered when they numbered the children

  127. of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

  128. For the Lord had said of them, "They

  129. shall surely die in the wilderness."

  130. There was not left a man of them save

  131. Caleb the son of Japa and Joshua the son

  132. of Nun. The title of our message tonight

  133. is God Always does what he says. God

  134. always does what he says. May God bless

  135. his word. You can be seated. We'll get

  136. into our message.

  137. Whenever someone fails to keep their

  138. word, you lose confidence in what they

  139. say. Maybe your boss has promised you a

  140. pay raise time and time again only for

  141. it to never come. And so the next time

  142. he says it, you're like, "Yeah, I'll

  143. believe it when it hits my bank account.

  144. Just stop telling me. Just do it." You

  145. know? Or maybe your husband promised you

  146. an anniversary getaway, but for the

  147. third consecutive year, something came

  148. up and now you're just thinking, I don't

  149. think that trip is ever gonna happen.

  150. That was just for you, Dad. I seriously

  151. had you in mind as I was thinking this.

  152. You might remember as a kid, now I'm

  153. going to pick on myself a little bit.

  154. You might remember as a kid being on the

  155. road with your parents. You're fighting

  156. in the back seat with your brother or

  157. sister and your dad says you wait till

  158. we get home, you know, and now you're

  159. just dreading for the next hour and a

  160. half until you get home of what's going

  161. to happen. And then you get home and you

  162. go to bed and dad never comes. He forgot

  163. to punish you. You know, I remember that

  164. happening a few times. And of course,

  165. when that happens, you're not going to

  166. go remind them, you forgot to punish me.

  167. And I've done that a few times as a dad

  168. myself, too, where I think this last

  169. Sunday, I forgot to discipline. And so,

  170. it's coming tonight, right? Just

  171. teasing.

  172. Don't we often make promises

  173. or issue warnings that we fail to follow

  174. through on?

  175. I think all of us have struggled with

  176. that in our lives. We get busy. We

  177. forget. Sometimes the people around us

  178. are left wondering if we will really

  179. follow through on what we say because we

  180. don't always keep our word. But I want

  181. to tell you tonight that God is not like

  182. us.

  183. God always does everything he says. When

  184. he says he will bless, he blesses. When

  185. he says he will curse, he curses. When

  186. he says he will judge, he judges. But

  187. thank God when he says he will save, he

  188. saves. I'm thankful for my salvation

  189. that God does what he says. That when

  190. you trust Jesus Christ as your savior

  191. and God calls you his own and forgives

  192. your sin and promises you eternal life,

  193. he keeps his word because he's a

  194. faithful God.

  195. But God's faithfulness to his word

  196. also warns us because when God says that

  197. he will judge you if you reject his son,

  198. he will judge you if you reject his son.

  199. All of God's warnings and all of God's

  200. promises come to pass because God always

  201. keeps his word. And that's really what

  202. we find happening in Numbers 26.

  203. You see, many times when we come to a

  204. record of genealogies and numbers, our

  205. eyes roll back a little bit. Or if

  206. you're in your personal Bible reading,

  207. you skip over these and go to the more

  208. exciting parts and the stories like

  209. we've been in here in the middle of

  210. Numbers. But I want us to make sure that

  211. we realize that even genealological

  212. records like this have theological

  213. significance for us even today. Even

  214. today, this census

  215. foreshadows that after 40 years of death

  216. in the wilderness, a conquest is still

  217. coming. An inheritance still awaits. It

  218. shows that God keeps his promises and

  219. fully intends to do so. But it also

  220. recalls God's warning to the previous

  221. generation that every one of them would

  222. die in the wilderness because of their

  223. rebellion and their faithlessness.

  224. Numbers 26 reveals really the

  225. fulfillment of God's warning to judge

  226. the old generation

  227. and his promise to bring their little

  228. ones in. That's what we see fulfilled in

  229. Numbers 26. See, unlike us, God follows

  230. through on every promise and every

  231. warning he ever makes. Every one of

  232. them. Why is it important to understand

  233. that? And what difference should it make

  234. in this next generation? And what

  235. difference should it make in our lives?

  236. That's what we want to study tonight.

  237. And so, as we look at this text, we're

  238. going to see first of all how this

  239. census foreshadows two promises. Then

  240. we'll see it at how it looks back on a

  241. warning and then we will come to make

  242. three applications for us today. Two

  243. promises, one warning, three

  244. applications. Let's start with the

  245. promise here. The census foreshadows

  246. two promises. The first is a promise of

  247. conquest. We read there at the very

  248. start in verse one that the Lord tells

  249. Moses and Eleazar who is the new high

  250. priest as Aaron already died in the

  251. wilderness. He tells them to take the

  252. sum of all the men that are to go forth

  253. to war. Now question, why do you need to

  254. know how many you have to go into war?

  255. Well, it's because battles await you and

  256. wars are in front of you. And so in what

  257. this is communicating is that in spite

  258. of a 38-year delay and in spite of the

  259. death of hundreds of thousands, the

  260. nation is still intact and the conquest

  261. is still in front of them. That God is

  262. going to bring them into the land and he

  263. is going to lead them into battle and

  264. they will conquer and secure victory.

  265. That's what this foreshadows. Battles

  266. are coming but conquest will happen.

  267. The second promise is the promise of

  268. inheritance.

  269. As we look at this genealogical record

  270. um or this these numbers, we notice

  271. first of all a tie back to God's promise

  272. to Jacob as he went into Egypt. If you

  273. would look with me at verse number five,

  274. they start taking the the tabulation

  275. here and it's given now beginning in

  276. verse five. And just notice the way this

  277. is written. Reuben the eldest son of

  278. Israel, the children of Reuben. Hanoch

  279. of whom cometh the family of the

  280. Heanites, of Paloo, the family of the

  281. Palites, of Hezron, the family of the

  282. Hezronites, of Carmi, the family of the

  283. Carminites. These are the families of

  284. the Reubenites. And what I want to point

  285. out to you is that when we studied the

  286. census in Numbers 1, it it mentioned who

  287. the princes were of each tribe. And then

  288. it didn't give a family record. It just

  289. told you the prince and it told you

  290. tying this back to Numbers 1. Moses is

  291. taking it all the way back to Genesis 46

  292. when God appeared to Jacob after he

  293. realized Joseph was alive. Uh God

  294. appeared to him and he said to go down

  295. into Egypt for I will there make of thee

  296. a great nation. I will go down with thee

  297. into Egypt and I will also surely bring

  298. thee up again. He says I'm going to

  299. bring your children back out. And then

  300. it gives a genealogical record that is

  301. recorded exactly as it's recorded in

  302. this particular text. He's connecting

  303. this together that God is fulfilling his

  304. promise to Jacob to bring his children

  305. out because now they are by the Jordan

  306. River. That's where they are. They're

  307. about to cross in. God's about to

  308. fulfill his promise. So, you can see

  309. what's being foreshadowed here both in

  310. the conquest, but then also that the

  311. inheritance is coming. But then also it

  312. speaks back to Numbers 14 when God

  313. promised to bring their little ones that

  314. they thought would be a prey that they

  315. were going to suffer. They were going to

  316. put up with everything in the wilderness

  317. when they should have grown up in

  318. Canaan. They're going to end up

  319. suffering in the wilderness is what God

  320. said. But that generation that you said

  321. will be a prey to your enemies, I'm

  322. going to bring them in. God has now

  323. brought them through the wilderness to

  324. the banks of the Jordan River. And God

  325. fully intends to bring them in because

  326. in verse 52, look what it says. And the

  327. Lord spake unto Moses, saying unto these

  328. the land shall be divided for an

  329. inheritance according to the number of

  330. the names. The number of the names. What

  331. was the number of the names? If you look

  332. back at verse 51, what does it say?

  333. These were numbered of the children of

  334. Israel, 600,000

  335. and 1,730.

  336. And so you've got here 61,730.

  337. You know what the number was before?

  338. 63 or 603,550.

  339. A difference of 1,820.

  340. By the time you tabulate the Levites in

  341. who gained a thousand people, there's

  342. only a difference of 820 people from the

  343. previous generation to this generation.

  344. What is that telling us? That even after

  345. 38 years of death in the wilderness,

  346. Israel is just as strong today. That

  347. they have not diminished, they have not

  348. weakened, they have not passed or faded

  349. off the scene. know God has raised up

  350. this generation to bring them through

  351. just as he promised to the previous

  352. generation who fell in the wilderness

  353. because of rebellion. God is faithful to

  354. his promise and he's here to give them

  355. the land. It says that they are going to

  356. cast lots for the land and that they are

  357. going to determine who receives what

  358. based off whether they are large or if

  359. they are small. They'll receive an

  360. inheritance in proportion to their

  361. number. But what this is supposed to

  362. show us and show this next generation

  363. who's reading this is that God has kept

  364. his word that he has done what he

  365. promised to Jacob in Genesis 46. And he

  366. has done what he said he would do to

  367. their fathers in in Numbers chapter 14.

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  368. God has done what he said. And so God

  369. kept two promises that are foreshadowed

  370. in this census. Conquest and

  371. inheritance,

  372. victory

  373. and possession. That's what he's

  374. promised them. Now let's look at the

  375. warning together. And this is at the

  376. very end verses 63 to verse 65. Remember

  377. that in Numbers 14, the Lord warned the

  378. previous generation that because of

  379. their faithlessness and their

  380. disobedience, he would judge them in the

  381. wilderness and they would never see the

  382. land. And that warning is recalled

  383. throughout this census. If we look at

  384. verses 9 through 10, look at what it

  385. says. And let's see if some of these

  386. things sound familiar.

  387. and the sons of Eliab, Neule, and Dayan,

  388. and Abram.

  389. This is that Dayan and Abram, which were

  390. famous in the congregation, who strove

  391. against Moses and against Aaron in the

  392. company of Kora. When they strove

  393. against the Lord, and the earth, opened

  394. her mouth, and swallowed them up

  395. together with Kora. And when that

  396. company died, what time the fire

  397. devoured 250 men, and they became a

  398. sign. The idea of the sign here is they

  399. became a warning to others. Do not rebel

  400. against God and against his leadership

  401. or judgment will follow. They were

  402. assigned to the next generation. I I

  403. didn't mention this, but when you

  404. consider even the very beginning here

  405. where it refers to Eleazar versus Aaron,

  406. that too is a reminder that Aaron has

  407. already died in the wilderness because

  408. of his own rebellion with Moses at the

  409. waters of Mebaha. eventually, and we're

  410. going to see in chapter 27 that God

  411. tells Moses, "Go up into the mountain

  412. and look at the land because you're

  413. going to die up there." That comes the

  414. very next chapter. And so, you have

  415. that, you have Dayan and Abram and the

  416. the and Kora as well. But then, if you

  417. look at verse number 14, it says this,

  418. "These are the families of the

  419. Simeonites,

  420. 202,

  421. and 200." I want to point out to you

  422. that the Simeonites have lost over

  423. 37,000

  424. people since the first census.

  425. Why is that? In chapter 25, we read

  426. about a prince of a chief house of the

  427. Simeonites named Zimai. And he took a

  428. daughter of a prince of the Medidionites

  429. caused by to his family is what it says

  430. to his brethren. We realize that

  431. families are much larger than what we

  432. consider like our immediate family. This

  433. is talking about to his brethren the

  434. other Simeonites. And it said that as a

  435. result of their sin, 24,000 died in the

  436. plague. Evidently, the majority of those

  437. who died in the plague were those who

  438. were related to the Simeonites because

  439. of their involvement in this. I mean,

  440. it's massive. They lost about 25,000

  441. more people than the next the next

  442. tribe. And so, there was a massive

  443. decimation. Why? Because of idolatry and

  444. immorality in the wilderness.

  445. But then we go all the way forward to

  446. verse 61

  447. and it says this. And Naab and Abaihu

  448. died when they offered strange fire

  449. before the Lord. Remember that all the

  450. way back to Leviticus 10. These two sons

  451. of Aaron. They died at Mount Si. Why?

  452. They did not follow God's command. We

  453. could also mention the one who broke the

  454. Sabbath and was stoned because he broke

  455. the Sabbath. And there were others

  456. mentioned throughout this wilderness

  457. journey that just shows us that this

  458. previous generation was marked by sin

  459. and rebellion. And as a result, they

  460. were judged by God just as God said they

  461. would be. And we're reminded of this

  462. clearly in verses 63- 65.

  463. It says, "These are they that were

  464. numbered by Moses and Eleazar the

  465. priest, who numbered the children of

  466. Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan

  467. near Jericho. But among these, there was

  468. not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron

  469. the priest numbered when they numbered

  470. the children of Israel in the wilderness

  471. of Si. For the Lord had said unto them,

  472. they shall surely die in the

  473. wilderness." And there was not left a

  474. man of them save Caleb the son of Japona

  475. and Joshua the son of Nun. And as I

  476. mentioned in chapter 27, God's going to

  477. pronounce that Moses is going to die

  478. there as well.

  479. But I wanted to point out that this is

  480. the exact wording that God gave to them

  481. 38 years ago in Numbers 14.

  482. It's showing us that God always does

  483. what he says.

  484. He always fulfills his promises and he

  485. always fulfills his warnings as well.

  486. And so what does this mean for the next

  487. generation? Why do they need to

  488. understand

  489. that God always does what he says? that

  490. he follows through on every promise and

  491. every warning that he's ever made.

  492. Well, I think there are three primary

  493. applications to this next generation.

  494. The first is this. Because God always

  495. keeps his word, they can trust his

  496. promise.

  497. They can trust that he is going to give

  498. them victory in the land of Canaan. They

  499. can trust that he is going to give them

  500. the land of Canaan as well. And so

  501. because God keeps his word, they can

  502. trust his promise. But then number two,

  503. because God always keeps his word, they

  504. need to heed his warnings. They need to

  505. heed his warnings. God warned in the law

  506. that if Israel rebels, if they fail to

  507. keep his word, his Sabbaths, his feasts,

  508. his jubilees, that he will curse their

  509. land and they will be carried away

  510. captive into a land that is not theirs.

  511. And now that God has fulfilled his

  512. warning to their fathers,

  513. they can know he'll fulfill his warning

  514. to them as well. They must heed his

  515. warnings. But then I think there's this

  516. final application to them because God

  517. keeps his word. If they will trust his

  518. promise and heed his warnings, they will

  519. experience the fullness of the blessing

  520. of God in the land of Canaan. if they

  521. will trust his word and heed his

  522. warnings.

  523. See, these things in numbers were

  524. written for their admonition,

  525. lest they should sin as their fathers

  526. had sinned. But in 1 Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  527. 10, the Apostle Paul also says that to a

  528. church in Corinth, when speaking about

  529. the things recorded in the book of

  530. Numbers, including that plague where

  531. 24,000 people died, he said, "These

  532. things were examples for us. They were

  533. written for our admonition. You know

  534. what that word means? Our warning. Lest

  535. we should worship idols as they did.

  536. Lest we should commit fornication as

  537. they did. And so we need to be careful

  538. to be sure that we are following what

  539. the scripture tells us to in terms of

  540. obedience and holiness. And because of

  541. that and because of what Paul said, I

  542. think we are safe to say that the

  543. applications that Israel receives from

  544. this text are the same applications that

  545. we draw from it today who are in Christ.

  546. The fact that God keeps his word yields

  547. those same three applications. Number

  548. one, because God keeps his word, we too

  549. can trust his promises. We can trust his

  550. promise of victory. He's obviously made

  551. a ton of promises, but I'm just going to

  552. stick in line with the text here tonight

  553. that we can trust his promise of victory

  554. to us because when Jesus gave his life

  555. on the cross, he nailed our sin to his

  556. body on the tree. And that means that he

  557. judged all of your sins on the cross.

  558. Which means that you have no eternal

  559. judgment to face, no condemnation to

  560. come and no penalty before God. Even for

  561. the very sins you committed today,

  562. you're free from them.

  563. Now this doesn't mean that we should be

  564. casual about sin. This doesn't mean that

  565. we can sin freely with no consequence.

  566. But it means that because the price has

  567. been paid at any point in time, we can

  568. come before God and confess our sins and

  569. forsake our sins and have a guiltfree

  570. conscience before God. something that

  571. nobody has ever been able to have before

  572. God. Because not because we are perfect,

  573. but because Christ took the guilt and

  574. bore it in his body on the cross. We're

  575. free from it. Jesus defeated sin and he

  576. also conquered our flesh. Your flesh has

  577. been dethroned. It can't be your king.

  578. It can't be your master. It can't chain

  579. you or shackle you because Christ broke

  580. those chains and made you free. The only

  581. way that your flesh gets back on the

  582. throne is if you make way for it. But

  583. it's not because Christ wasn't

  584. sufficient. No, he's promised you and

  585. guaranteed victory over that sin. But

  586. you know what else he's done? Crushed

  587. the serpent's head. He crushed the

  588. serpent's head. That means that as Paul

  589. said in Colossians chapter 2 that he

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  590. triumphed over all principalities and

  591. powers and rulers of the darkness of

  592. this world. It says that he made a show

  593. of them openly. That's as if he paraded

  594. around Satan and his demons by casting

  595. them out and proving his power over

  596. them. And then when he suffered and died

  597. on the cross, he rendered Satan Satan

  598. powerless to bind you. Satan may oppress

  599. you. Satan may oppose you, but he can

  600. never have your soul. He can never steal

  601. the spirit from you. He can never take

  602. away the eternal life that's been

  603. guaranteed to you. Why? Because Christ

  604. brought the victory over him. He

  605. triumphed through his wounds.

  606. This is your victory.

  607. It's been promised in Christ. And

  608. because God keeps his word, you can

  609. trust his promise. That means in your

  610. life today, you do not have to bow

  611. before sin. It means that you cannot be

  612. bound by Satan. It means that you can

  613. trust in his promise of victory. But I

  614. also want to assure you that you can

  615. trust his promise of inheritance.

  616. Conquest has happened. Another greater

  617. conquest is coming and an inheritance is

  618. guaranteed to us. That is even eternal

  619. salvation, eternal life. God has

  620. promised that King Jesus will lead his

  621. saints into a final revolt against all

  622. the kingdoms of darkness. that he will

  623. destroy them all without us lifting a

  624. finger by merely the word of his mouth.

  625. He is going to divide after establishing

  626. his kingdom. He's going to divide the

  627. land in a new earth to both Israel and

  628. to the nations. He is going to establish

  629. his kingdom of rest, his kingdom of

  630. peace, his kingdom of righteousness. and

  631. we get to reign with him and serve him

  632. and worship him forever and ever. That

  633. is your inheritance, even eternal life.

  634. And as we read on Sunday in first Peter,

  635. that inheritance is incorruptible. That

  636. inheritance is undefiled. It fadeth not

  637. away. It is reserved for you in heaven

  638. who are kept by the power of God unto

  639. salvation. We learned that on Sunday.

  640. That inheritance to you has been

  641. promised. And because God always keeps

  642. his word, you can trust his promise.

  643. It's guaranteed.

  644. But then also number two,

  645. because God always keeps his word, we

  646. too must heed his warnings. We must heed

  647. his warnings. See, God has called us as

  648. his people to holiness,

  649. faithfulness,

  650. and obedience.

  651. And the reality is in modern

  652. Christianity,

  653. people are scared to preach specifics

  654. about holiness

  655. and sometimes even too scared to preach

  656. the clear commands of God to New

  657. Testament believers because we're

  658. worried about being too moralistic and

  659. not gospel- centered enough. But when I

  660. study the Bible, what I find is that the

  661. gospel transforms people still and it

  662. makes them holy and it changes how they

  663. look and it changes how they dress and

  664. it changes how they live and who they

  665. date and it changes all of those things.

  666. It's holiness. It's it's obedience. God

  667. calls us to be pure as singles, to be

  668. faithful in marriage, to be modest in

  669. dress. He calls us to be truthful with

  670. our tongue, to abstain from gossip and

  671. slander of others, to do everything

  672. without complaining.

  673. Did you know that's a command in

  674. scripture? Did you know that every time

  675. you complain, you are sinning against

  676. God, whether it's about stubbing your

  677. toe or it's about what your coworker did

  678. to you or what your boss did to you. Uh

  679. the apostle Paul wrote there in

  680. Philippians, do all things without

  681. murmurings and disputings and especially

  682. in the context of a local church.

  683. And yet in many churches, you'll have

  684. people complaining about the color of

  685. the carpets or the color of the

  686. himynelss or what kind of songs that you

  687. sing or or about this personality over

  688. here that I just don't get with and this

  689. click over here. And you can find

  690. believers just complaining about it.

  691. It's disobedience, friend. God's called

  692. you to a greater holiness than to

  693. nitpick your brothers and sisters in

  694. Christ. He's called us to use our tongue

  695. for good and not for evil. He commands

  696. us to flee from sin and to cling to

  697. Christ. He commands us to resist the

  698. devil and to love one another, to be

  699. humble, kind, and generous. He calls us

  700. not to be covetous and greedy after

  701. filthy lucer.

  702. He calls husbands to love their wives

  703. and wives to respect their husbands and

  704. children to obey their parents. And it

  705. doesn't matter what our culture thinks

  706. today. It matters what God says because

  707. God's word is timeless and eternal.

  708. We're called to live above reproach,

  709. blamelessly, and holy in this world

  710. today. But I do want you to understand

  711. that God calls us to holiness and

  712. obedience not so we can receive his

  713. promise, but because we've already

  714. received his promise. We do not work our

  715. way into favor and righteousness with

  716. God. But when we have Jesus Christ and

  717. the Holy Spirit living within us, that

  718. ought to change our lives. It ought to

  719. change how we treat people in our lives.

  720. It ought to change how we spend our

  721. money if it's wasteful or if it's

  722. invested well and going into the work of

  723. God. It ought to change our lives.

  724. Holiness and obedience is the natural

  725. outflow of every person who has believed

  726. the gospel and received the Holy Spirit.

  727. It's the natural outflow. Therefore,

  728. what God commands, we must obey

  729. or else

  730. he warns of discipline. He warns of

  731. discipline.

  732. God will never take away your salvation

  733. because you sin.

  734. Because he did not save you because you

  735. did not sin.

  736. He saved you by grace. He keeps you by

  737. grace.

  738. But the reality is just as God

  739. disciplined Israel in the wilderness,

  740. God warns his people today that he will

  741. discipline us when we fail to follow his

  742. commands.

  743. What does that look like?

  744. Well, we hope it doesn't look like it

  745. does in scripture, but if it's how it

  746. looks in scripture,

  747. it's a serious warning. Why? Ananas and

  748. Safh

  749. died in front of the whole church

  750. because they lied about an offering.

  751. Paul wrote to the Corinthian believers

  752. that some of them were sick and weak and

  753. had even died because they took of the

  754. Lord's supper unworthily.

  755. Something as simple as that.

  756. Even Jesus said that when a branch fails

  757. to produce fruit, he will prune it. But

  758. it's so that it will bring forth more

  759. fruit.

  760. And so the reality is that God says,

  761. even when you're saved, if you live in

  762. disobedience to me, I will discipline

  763. you.

  764. Does that bother you?

  765. Well, it's bothered Christians for a

  766. long time because the author of Hebrews

  767. had to say, "My son, despise not the

  768. chastening of the Lord." You know what

  769. chastening is? Discipline.

  770. It's when God pulls out the whooping

  771. stick on us because we've been bad. And

  772. and so that's what discipline is. And

  773. yet he says, "Despise not thou the

  774. chastening of the Lord." Well, why why

  775. wouldn't I I think little of the

  776. chastening of the Lord. He says, "For

  777. whom he loveth, he chastineth." Jesus

  778. said in Revelation 3:1 19 to the

    Revelation 3:1

  779. Leodysian church, "As many as I love, I

  780. rebuke and chasen."

  781. God disciplines us out of love because

  782. he knows that the sin that we are living

  783. in is not for our good and it's

  784. certainly not for his glory. He does not

  785. discipline us to hurt us. He does not

  786. prune us because he sees us as

  787. worthless. Sometimes you've got to prune

  788. a tree so that it will bring new life

  789. into it and sprout forth more leaves.

  790. And sometimes God's got to do that in

  791. our life. He's got to cut a relationship

  792. out of our life. Or he's got to cut some

  793. financial stability out of our life. Or

  794. maybe he even has to cut some health out

  795. of our life. We don't know exactly what

  796. it looks like, but all of those things

  797. are things that are mentioned in the

  798. scripture of what can come because of

  799. sin. But the reason God does it is to

  800. bring forgiveness and restoration

  801. through repentance that we may live for

  802. his glory once again. Despise not the

  803. chastening of the Lord. See, because God

  804. keeps his word, not only can we trust

  805. his promise, but we must also heed his

  806. warnings.

  807. But then the final application

  808. is that when we trust God's promise and

  809. when we heed his warnings, we experience

  810. the fullness of his blessings in Christ

  811. even today. I'm talking about a clean

  812. conscience before God. Wouldn't you love

  813. to have a clean conscience before God?

  814. to not go through your life fearing

  815. being caught or being weighed down in

  816. your life because you know you're not

  817. living right before God, but to just be

  818. able to come to church every Sunday free

  819. and clear knowing that your sin is

  820. forgiven, that it's under the blood,

  821. that you're not continually living this

  822. life of sin, and therefore you can sing

  823. God's praise without feeling like a

  824. hypocrite. You can put your offering in

  825. the in the box without acting like

  826. you're paying God off because of your

  827. sin. No, you can just enjoy praising and

  828. worshiping God. You can enjoy unhindered

  829. access to him. Men, did you know that if

  830. you're bitter against your wives, your

  831. prayers will be hindered?

  832. That's what the Bible says.

  833. And so, the reality is is if you are

  834. mistreating your wife, that can hinder

  835. your access to God.

  836. But when you are treating her the way

  837. that God tells you to and you're being

  838. loving and gracious and generous and

  839. kind toward her, then you can come

  840. before God in prayer knowing there's

  841. nothing that stands between us. How I

  842. mean, we sometimes we know when we've

  843. got sin going on in our lives and we

  844. come before God and and we feel like we

  845. got to just clean all of this out before

  846. we can have a relationship with him. And

  847. listen, that's a good place to start is

  848. with the confession of sin and the

  849. cleansing and the renewing of your mind.

  850. But how wonderful it is that if you're

  851. so trusting God's promise of victory and

  852. you're so uh careful to heed his

  853. warnings and to obey him that you can

  854. just come before God and humbly

  855. acknowledge, I know I'm a sinner. I know

  856. I don't belong in your presence, but

  857. thank God you've brought me in through

  858. Christ. And you can just start your

  859. prayer life clean with God. That's a

  860. blessing that Christ died to give you.

  861. It truly is.

  862. When you trust his promise and heed his

  863. warnings, it allows you to experience a

  864. vibrant prayer life, a satisfying

  865. marriage, a loving family, a faithful

  866. ministry, and really the list. We could

  867. go on on and on and on. There are

  868. manifold blessings in our relationship

  869. with Christ. But anytime we fall short

  870. because of unbelief and anytime we fail

  871. to obey him, we miss out on experiencing

  872. the fullness of the blessings that

  873. Christ provided for us.

  874. Trusting God's promise and heeding God's

  875. warnings can help you experience that

  876. blessing because God always keeps his

  877. word.

  878. I can struggle to follow through on

  879. that.

  880. I can put dates on my calendar that get

  881. pushed around.

  882. I can forget my brother's birthday.

  883. Hopefully not any of my kids or my wife,

  884. but a brother's okay, right?

  885. Sometimes I mentioned I'll forget to

  886. discipline my kids on the way home

  887. or to schedule that getaway for our

  888. anniversary. And so because because I

  889. fail and you know that when you fail,

  890. you leave people that you love dearly

  891. deeply disappointed in your life. And

  892. maybe that's been your whole life

  893. experience is everyone in your life,

  894. whether it was your father or if it was

  895. your mother or a friend or a brother,

  896. but but there's somebody in your life

  897. that always said they would do one thing

  898. and never did it. Or they said they

  899. would do one thing and then did the very

  900. opposite. There's someone in your life

  901. that has constantly failed you and it's

  902. brought you to a point where you even

  903. question, will God really do what he

  904. says? Friends, he always does what he

  905. says. He follows through on every

  906. promise and every warning he ever makes.

  907. In one sense,

  908. that is giving a deep sense of assurance

  909. that I know that no matter my sin, no

  910. matter what comes at me in life, God's

  911. true to his word. He's faithful to his

  912. promise. He's got victory for me. He's

  913. got an inheritance for me that is

  914. incorruptible and undefiled and fadeth

  915. not away. I know that I can rest in all

  916. of those promises. And in that sense, it

  917. gives us a great feeling of assurance,

  918. doesn't it?

  919. But it should also in another sense

  920. cause us to carefully live according to

  921. his word knowing he faithfully

  922. disciplines his children he loves.

  923. But if we'll trust his promises,

  924. heed his warnings, we can experience the

  925. blessings of Christ until he re returns

  926. to fulfill every promise that has yet to

  927. be done. He'll do it. If you're here and

  928. you're not a Christian, God has also

  929. given you both a promise and a warning.

  930. The promise is of salvation. That if you

  931. believe on his son who died on the cross

  932. to atone for your sin and rose again,

  933. God promises right here, right now to

  934. forgive your sin, to wipe your slate

  935. clean, to clear you of any and all

  936. guilt. He promises to give you his holy

  937. spirit who will change your life. He

  938. also promises to give you eternal life

  939. in his kingdom if you will believe. That

  940. is a wonderful promise of salvation.

  941. But he also gives a warning that those

  942. who reject his son and die in their sin

  943. will spend eternity in hell facing the

  944. judgment for their sin.

  945. God offers a promise. And if you receive

  946. that promise through his son by faith,

  947. he'll deliver you from death unto life.

  948. So if you've not trusted him, I

  949. encourage you to trust him tonight. If

  950. you're a believer, I encourage you to

  951. cling to his promise no matter what

  952. you're going through in life because

  953. he's faithful to his word. But I also

  954. encourage you to heed his warnings, to

  955. follow his word, to live under his

  956. authority. And as you trust his promise

  957. and heed his warning, you can experience

  958. the fullness of the blessings of Christ

  959. from now till he returns. Let's pray.

  960. Father, we thank you for your word and

  961. for its timeless truths and that even in

  962. something like this census, there is

  963. great theological truth about who you

  964. are. You are true to your word. Help us

  965. to trust your promise. Help us to heed

  966. your warnings and experience the

  967. blessings of Christ. I pray if there are

  968. those who are here tonight or under the

  969. sound of my voice that have not trusted

  970. Jesus as their savior, I pray they would

  971. believe the gospel and trust in him and

  972. be delivered from death into life

  973. tonight. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
