  1. Let's take our Bibles and go to Numbers

  2. 25.

  3. Numbers 25.

  4. And uh once you found your place, you

  5. can stand and we'll give honor to

  6. reading God's word together from our

  7. text in Numbers 25:18 verses. We'll read

    Numbers 25:18

  8. the entire chapter. or once you've found

  9. your place there, I want to just begin

  10. reading from Numbers 31 because it will

  11. help establish the context of what's

  12. going on here.

  13. So, we'll be in Numbers 25, but let's

  14. look first at Numbers 31.

  15. Just one verse here. Numbers 31:16.

    Numbers 31:16

  16. It says, "Behold, these caused the

  17. children of Israel through the council

  18. of Balum to commit trespass against the

  19. Lord in the matter of Peor, and there

  20. was a plague among the congregation

  21. of the Lord." You can lose your place

  22. there. I point that out because Balam is

  23. not mentioned in our text. But what

  24. we've seen these last few weeks is that

  25. Bailac, the king of Moab, hired Balum to

  26. curse Israel. And he was unsuccessful.

  27. Every time he tried, no matter where he

  28. stood, no matter which part of the

  29. congregation he was looking at, he could

  30. not curse Israel because God had

  31. declared them blessed.

  32. So Balum counseledled Bailac and the

  33. Moabites.

  34. There is one way to turn God against

  35. Israel and that is to entice them to

  36. immorality

  37. and idolatry. And so he counsels them

  38. them to do this. And so I want to set

  39. that context because this is going to be

  40. wild coming right off the mountain where

  41. God has declared his blessing on these

  42. people.

  43. and it comes crashing down very quickly.

  44. But there's some context to that. Now,

  45. let's look at Numbers 25:1.

    Numbers 25:1

  46. And Israel abodeed in Shidam, and the

  47. people began to commit whoredom with the

  48. daughters of Moab. And they called the

  49. people unto the sacrifices of their

  50. gods. And the people did eat and bow

  51. down to their gods. And Israel joined

  52. himself unto Baal Peor. And the anger of

  53. the Lord was kindled against Israel. And

  54. the Lord said unto Moses, "Take all the

  55. heads of the people, and hang them up

  56. before the Lord against the son, that

  57. the fierce anger of the Lord may be

  58. turned away from Israel." And Moses said

  59. unto the judges of Israel, "Slay ye

  60. everyone his men that were joined unto

  61. Baal Peor. And behold, one of the

  62. children of Israel came and brought unto

  63. his brethren a Midionitish woman in the

  64. sight of Moses and in the sight of all

  65. the congregation of the children of

  66. Israel who were weeping before the door

  67. of the tabernacle of the congregation.

  68. And when Phineas the son of Eleazar the

  69. son of Aaron the priest saw it, he rose

  70. up from among the congregation and took

  71. a javelin in his hand and went after the

  72. man of Israel into the tent and thrust

  73. both of them through the man of Israel

  74. and the woman through her belly. So the

  75. plague was stayed from the children of

  76. Israel. And those that died in the

  77. plague were 24,000.

  78. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

  79. Phineas the son of Eleazar, the son of

  80. Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath

  81. away from the children of Israel, while

  82. he was zealous for my sake among them,

  83. that I consume not the children of

  84. Israel in my jealousy. Wherefore say,

  85. Behold, I give unto him my covenant of

  86. peace, and he shall have it and his seed

  87. after him, even the covenant of an

  88. everlasting priesthood, because he was

  89. zealous for his God, and made an

  90. atonement for the children of Israel.

  91. Now the name of the Israelite that was

  92. slain, even that was slain with the

  93. Midionitish woman, was Zimra, the son of

  94. Salu, a prince of a chief house among

  95. the Simeonites. And the name of the

  96. woman, Midionite woman that was slain

  97. was Cosby, the daughter of Zur. He was

  98. head over a people and a chief house in

  99. Midian. And the Lord spake unto Moses,

  100. saying, "Vx the Midianites, and smite

  101. them, for they vex you with their ws,

  102. wherewith they have beguiled you in the

  103. matter of Peor, and in the matter of

  104. Cosby, the daughter of the prince of

  105. Midian, their sister, which was slain in

  106. the day of the plague, for Peor's sake."

  107. And what we read from verse chapter 31

  108. was that vexing of the Midionites. It

  109. was when God's vengeance was issued out

  110. justly on those who played their role in

  111. deceiving Israel in this matter. So what

  112. you see is this. Israel is deceived yet

  113. they are judged. And the ones who

  114. deceived them are also judged. Therefore

  115. God is just to all who sin. Now, we're

  116. going to focus specifically tonight on

  117. the action that Phineas takes in this

  118. text. And so, the title of our our

  119. sermon tonight is the catalyst for

  120. dealing with sin. The catalyst for

  121. dealing with sin. May God bless his

  122. word. You can be seated. And we'll

  123. consider this text tonight.

  124. When I worked at the Sherno paint

  125. company for 10 years, did a lot of

  126. commercial work with epoxies.

  127. And uh the the epoxies were very a very

  128. hard finish. And so you would use them

  129. on industrial railings or garage floors

  130. and even airport hangers is what we uh

  131. used a lot of epoxy on. and getting that

  132. that hard finish, it requires a

  133. particular chemical reaction that is

  134. caused by a catalyst. And so when we

  135. sold these paints, they would often have

  136. a part A and a part B. And sometimes it

  137. was a gallon to gallon ratio, sometimes

  138. it was a a quart of catalyst to a gallon

  139. of product. And so you have this this

  140. part A and part B. Now, if you take the

  141. part A and you brush it out on the floor

  142. by itself, it's never going to dry.

  143. Never. And so, it'll come off the floor

  144. in sheets. It'll stick to everything

  145. that touches it and it's just a mess.

  146. Did we ever have painters who forgot to

  147. mix the catalyst? Yes, we did. And it

  148. was an absolute disaster for them to try

  149. to get that product off the floor. It

  150. was just a sticky mess. But when you

  151. take the catalyst and you mix it with

  152. it, it causes this chemical reaction

  153. that accelerates the dry time and causes

  154. it to dry ultra hard. Hard enough to

  155. handle even airplane traffic. Catalysts

  156. cause reactions.

  157. And just as catalyst causes a reaction

  158. in epoxy, there is a catalyst that

  159. caused Phineas to react the way he does

  160. in this text. Balam counsels the

  161. Moabites to seduce Israel into gross

  162. immorality and idolatry so that God will

  163. turn against them. And Israel swallows

  164. that bait, hook, line, and sinker. And

  165. what happens is God's wrath comes

  166. against them. And God orders the princes

  167. of Israel to go and slay every person

  168. that has joined themselves to the

  169. Moabitete god Baal Peor. But not just to

  170. kill them, but to then impale them and

  171. hold them up in the air in the sight of

  172. God against the sun is what it says.

  173. What this is is a public display that

  174. those of you who break God's covenant

  175. and sin against him like this, the

  176. sentence for you is death.

  177. And right in the middle as the order is

  178. going out, this man, this prince of the

  179. Simeonites brings a daughter of the

  180. prince of the Midianites

  181. directly by the house of God in Moses's

  182. sight and in the sight of the people.

  183. And he takes her to the tent of his

  184. brethren to do what you could only speak

  185. of

  186. in dark places.

  187. It's wicked.

  188. But while the rest of the congregation

  189. is weeping at the tabernacle door,

  190. something takes place within Phineas

  191. that moves him to rise up and take a

  192. javelin in his hand and to go into the

  193. tent and to kill them both.

  194. And we look at a reaction like this and

  195. we almost feel like it's harsh, like

  196. it's an over reaction. And yet what we

  197. read in the text is that it is a

  198. reaction that God says made atonement

  199. for sin. a reaction after which God

  200. commends Phineas and gives him a

  201. covenant of an everlasting

  202. priesthood.

  203. His action stopped a plague among the

  204. people.

  205. The emphasis of this particular chapter

  206. is really placed on what led Phineas to

  207. take decisive action

  208. against sin.

  209. That's really what it's about. That

  210. there was a particular catalyst that

  211. accelerated his decision in this moment

  212. to take drastic action against this sin.

  213. The reason that matters to you and I

  214. tonight is because as New Testament

  215. believers, we too are called to take

  216. decisive action

  217. against sin. We are called to deal

  218. decisively with it. Now, we all

  219. recognize that just because we are

  220. blessed in Christ, as we've seen over

  221. the last several weeks, it doesn't mean

  222. that none of us will ever sin again. It

  223. doesn't mean that any of us are perfect.

  224. We're simply forgiven. And so that means

  225. that we all know that while we strive to

  226. be like Jesus, we will always fall

  227. short. And so what really matters is how

  228. we deal with sin when it comes.

  229. Do we tolerate it? Do we sweep it under

  230. the rug?

  231. Or do we take decisive action in our

  232. lives personally?

  233. You see what about at church even

  234. in a world where everyone is a sinner?

  235. It's easy for us to sympathize with

  236. sinners because we are one of them.

  237. So, we don't feel qualified

  238. to be a judge or to take action against

  239. anyone's sin, to confront anyone,

  240. because I know I've got holes in my own

  241. life. That's often how we feel. And yet,

  242. what scripture calls us to do is not to

  243. sympathize with sinful man, but to

  244. sympathize with a holy God, a God who

  245. knows no sin, a God who can't identify

  246. with sin because he never has sinned.

  247. Yet he calls us to stand with him and

  248. not with sin.

  249. And so

  250. when sin gets into the camp, we are

  251. called to take decisive action. Now, not

  252. the same way that Phineas did.

  253. That's not what we're talking about.

  254. Taking javelins to church members' homes

  255. because of their sin. That's not what

  256. we're talking about.

  257. uh but we do want to take decisive

  258. action with the same spirit with which

  259. Phineas did.

  260. And so just as there was a catalyst that

  261. caused Phineas's reaction,

  262. there is a catalyst that causes us to

  263. react decisively

  264. towards sin. And that's what I hope to

  265. show you from this text tonight is what

  266. it was that caused this reaction. And

  267. that should cause us not to tolerate sin

  268. in our lives or in our church, but to

  269. deal decisively with it. We clearly see

  270. that God is angry with Israel because of

  271. their sin.

  272. Whordedom with Moab led Israel to commit

  273. spiritual adultery with Baal Peor, the

  274. god of the Moabites. It says in verse

  275. number one, Israel abodeed in Shidam and

  276. the people began to commit whoredom with

  277. the daughters of Moab. This is just the

  278. beginning. That tells us this is going

  279. somewhere. But this is where it started.

  280. They began to take the Midianite women

  281. to themselves, which was strictly

  282. forbidden in the law. They were only to

  283. marry within the nation because and this

  284. is what God said back in Exodus that

  285. their their daughters will turn your

  286. hearts against your God and to their

  287. gods. That was God's warning. And that's

  288. exactly what happens in this text. They

  289. began to commit whoredom with the

  290. daughters of Moab. H whoredom is a word

  291. that carries a wide swath of sexual

  292. immorality. Fornication,

  293. adultery, homosexuality,

  294. prostitution, everything is included in

  295. what this word whoredom means. And now

  296. having joined up with the Moabitete

  297. women, it says in verse two that they

  298. call the people unto the sacrifices of

  299. their gods. So they've married these

  300. women or they've brought these women

  301. into a polygamous relationship with

  302. their wives. There's all kinds of

  303. grossness coming on. And now the

  304. Moabitete women are saying, "Hey, why

  305. don't you come sit with us and check out

  306. our sacrifices?" And so they go, but

  307. then it doesn't stop there. It says

  308. there in verse number two that the

  309. people did eat. The word sacrifices

  310. is that word for the communal covenantal

  311. sacrifices. This means they were sitting

  312. down and eating a meal of communion to

  313. make a covenant with this God. And

  314. therefore it says at the end of verse

  315. two, bowed down to their gods.

  316. This sin has spread widely and it has

  317. escalated quickly and it has profained

  318. God's name because in verse number three

  319. it says Israel joined himself under Baal

  320. Peor. Baal Peor is the God of the

  321. Moabites. This word joined is the idea

  322. of a yoke. The wooden yoke that you put

  323. around two animals necks that the the

  324. plowman you holds on to the res from

  325. that and they work together. That what

  326. this is saying is they took the yoke

  327. covenant they had with God and they cast

  328. it off and they put on a yoke with Bale

  329. Peor. And now they who have been called

  330. and sanctified as a holy people and a

  331. god have profained the name of their god

  332. by joining up with this other god of

  333. evil and wickedness. And thus it says in

  334. verse number three, the anger of the

  335. Lord was kindled against Israel.

  336. God tells Moses, "Send the heads of the

  337. people to go and bring the people and to

  338. kill them because of this and then to

  339. hang their bodies up as a testimony that

  340. if you go this way, that will be your

  341. sentence." And the sentence would be

  342. death. The only thing that can turn away

  343. God's wrath from sin is the sentence of

  344. death.

  345. Why God is fiercely angry with their

  346. sin.

  347. Sin

  348. God still gets angry with it today.

  349. Why? For the same reasons. Sin spreads,

  350. doesn't it? Israel, this I'm sure this

  351. started with just a few people, but it

  352. quickly spread to where over 24,000 died

  353. by a plague.

  354. Sin, if you tolerate it, spreads like a

  355. contagious disease, plaguing everyone

  356. who touches it. Because sin can spread

  357. into your marriage. It can spread down

  358. to your children. It can even spread

  359. throughout a church. Sin spreads, but

  360. also sin escalates.

  361. What we notice is this clear escalation

  362. from whoredom to sacrifice to covenant

  363. to idolatry.

  364. And in our lives personally, sin often

  365. follows the same escalation. Sexual sin

  366. often starts with pornography and it

  367. escalates to fornication, adultery,

  368. homosexuality. And when none of that

  369. satisfies, it escalates further into all

  370. forms of wicked deviance. That's how it

  371. goes.

  372. Addiction can often start with a little

  373. bit of tobacco and then it can you you

  374. go after dabble a little bit in

  375. marijuana and in shrooms and soon enough

  376. that hit is not strong enough and that's

  377. when people make their way to ecstasy

  378. and to opioids and to heroin and cocaine

  379. and meth and fentinol. It it's a buildup

  380. of resistance. Why? Because sin

  381. escalates in our lives.

  382. Often times

  383. a little irritation between you and your

  384. spouse

  385. can escalate into harsher words and

  386. escalate into greater volume and

  387. escalate into abusive language. Sin

  388. spreads and sin escalates. But listen,

  389. sin profains God's name among his

  390. people. When you identify as a Christian

  391. or when you are a pastor or Christian

  392. influencer, your and your sin goes

  393. public. It profains the name of God and

  394. it leaves a nasty taste about God in the

  395. mouths of the lost. just today came

  396. across my news feed on Fox 31 that out

  397. in Fort Lutton there was a man who

  398. served on the nursery ministry there who

  399. is arrested at church for 25 counts of

  400. assault on a child

  401. 25

  402. that started somewhere

  403. sin escalates

  404. and when it escalates among God's people

  405. it profains God's name. God takes it

  406. seriously and so must we see. Sin

  407. spreads. It escalates. It profaines

  408. God's name. And therefore, God is justly

  409. angry about it.

  410. Because God is just and holy, sin must

  411. be dealt with.

  412. And the kind of decisive action that God

  413. called for in this text is the kind of

  414. decisive action that Phineas takes.

  415. You get a picture here that Phineas's

  416. heart is after God's heart

  417. because what happens is this this

  418. command has gone forth to kill the

  419. guilty

  420. and no sooner than the the order has

  421. gone out. People are at the tabernacle

  422. and they are weeping because of the

  423. death that is spreading through them.

  424. The plague because of the sin because of

  425. the defilement of God's people and God's

  426. tabernacle. Moses and the and the

  427. congregation that is not guilty in this.

  428. They are drawing near to the tabernacle

  429. of the Lord. And the Bible says in verse

  430. number six, "And behold,

  431. when you see the word behold in the

  432. Bible, it means,

  433. look at this. Can you believe this?

  434. Watch this." And it tells us according

  435. to verses 14 and 15 that this prince

  436. among the Simeonites, one of the tribes

  437. of Israel, that he brings a daughter who

  438. was of a prince in Midian and brings her

  439. right by the tabernacle in the sight of

  440. Moses in the sight of congregation to

  441. the tent of his brethren to do what can

  442. only be interpreted as wicked

  443. immorality.

  444. perversion

  445. and as this I mean think about this

  446. blatantly

  447. unashamedly

  448. openly walks by the house of God where

  449. the glory of God is hovering above it

  450. and the people of God are weeping at its

  451. door and he goes highhandedly right in

  452. front of them all and brings this woman

  453. to the tent of his family and it's at

  454. this point something began to well up

  455. with Infinineas.

  456. And he, it says, he rose up. He rose up

  457. and he took a javelin in his hand and he

  458. went after them into the tent. And in

  459. the act of sin itself, he struck the

  460. javelin through them and through him and

  461. through her through her womb, through

  462. her belly. And it says at the end of

  463. verse number uh eight, the plague was

  464. stayed from the children of Israel.

  465. Nevertheless, those that died in the

  466. plague were 24,000.

  467. See, the fact that the plague was

  468. stopped from going any further tells us

  469. that Phineas's decisive action turned

  470. the Lord's wrath away from Israel.

  471. Why did Phineas take such decisive

  472. action

  473. when everyone else was weeping at the

  474. tabernacle?

  475. What was going on in him that caused him

  476. to rise up javelin in hand and take

  477. action against this sin? In verses 10

  478. through13,

  479. what we find is the Lord commends

  480. Phineas specifically

  481. for his zeal. Would you look at verse

  482. 10? And the Lord spake unto Moses.

  483. Chapter 25:10.

  484. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

  485. Phineas, the son of Eleazar, the son of

  486. Aaron the priest, hath turned away my

  487. wrath from the children of Israel. while

  488. he was zealous for my sake among them

  489. that I consumed not the children of

  490. Israel in my jealousy. God has revealed

  491. himself time and time again to be a

  492. jealous God. When we look at jealousy, a

  493. lot of times we're thinking about, you

  494. know, college age kids and this guy gets

  495. jealous over this girl that he wants to

  496. go out with cuz his friend wanted to go

  497. out with. That's not the kind of

  498. jealousy we are talking about. God

  499. rather is like a jealous husband whose

  500. bride has been enticed by another lover

  501. whose bride has been assaulted by

  502. another lover whose whose wife that's

  503. how he refers to Israel he has made this

  504. covenant relationship with them and he

  505. is as their husband and they are as his

  506. bride and he is very jealous for them

  507. that is why God tells them to vex the

  508. Midianites at the end of the chapter

  509. after is because they are a a other

  510. lover who has enticed Israel into a

  511. spiritually adulterous relationship with

  512. their God.

  513. But Phineas

  514. has a burning zeal for God that moved

  515. him to take dramatic and decisive action

  516. that turned God's wrath away from

  517. Israel. And so, you know what God does?

  518. He makes a covenant with Phineas. It

  519. says in verse number 12, "Wherefore say,

  520. behold, I give unto him my covenant of

  521. peace, and he shall have it and his seed

  522. after him, even a the covenant of an

  523. everlasting priesthood." And so God is

  524. now promising to this man who turned

  525. away God's wrath by making this

  526. atonement. He is promising that his seed

  527. being a a grandson of Aaron will forever

  528. have the high priesthood.

  529. That's a tremendous honor among the

  530. nation of Israel. Why does God bestow

  531. such honor upon him? It says because he

  532. was zealous for his God and made an

  533. atonement for the children of Israel.

  534. Made an atonement for the children of

  535. Israel.

  536. See, the catalyst that led to Phineas's

  537. decisive action

  538. was a burning zeal for God.

  539. See, Phineas's zeal for God led him then

  540. to deal with sin.

  541. And and God's wrath can only be turned

  542. away by dealing with sin because God is

  543. holy and God is just. So, he can't just

  544. overlook sin. He can't just let it go

  545. because then he would not be just. He

  546. would not be holy. Sin must be dealt

  547. with. And the punishment for sin is

  548. death and then eternal judgment in hell.

  549. Unless

  550. unless there is a priest who is zealous

  551. for God who rises up to make atonement

  552. for sin. And just as Phineas's zeal led

  553. him to decisively deal with sin, there

  554. was another priest whose zeal led him to

  555. deal decisively with sin. And that is

  556. the Lord Jesus Christ. Because you'll

  557. remember that after his triumphal entry

  558. into Jerusalem, Jesus goes to the temple

  559. and he sees the money changers extorting

  560. the people, turning the father's house

  561. into a house of merchandise. And

  562. something welled up within the son of

  563. God that caused him then to take a whip

  564. in his hand and to go into the temple

  565. and to flip over the money tables and to

  566. crack that whip and to chase those

  567. religious leaders out of the Lord's

  568. house. And it's at that point that the

  569. disciples remember that it was said of

  570. the Messiah in Psalm 69:9, "The zeal of

    Psalms 69:9

  571. thine house hath eaten me up."

  572. It was the zeal for God that led Jesus

  573. to cleanse the temple to take decisive

  574. action. But listen, the same zeal that

  575. consumed Jesus in the temple then

  576. carried him to the cross because it was

  577. his zeal for the father's glory that led

  578. him to suffer and bleed and die on that

  579. cross to deal with all of our sin once

  580. and for all so that the gospel might go

  581. to all the nations and that all people

  582. everywhere might be forgiven of their

  583. sin and redeemed and then give their

  584. worship to God alone. It was the zeal

  585. for his father that consumed him in the

  586. temple and carried him to the cross to

  587. make an atonement for our sin. He dealt

  588. with it once and for all on that cross.

  589. The zeal for his father's glory led him

  590. to deal with our sin on the cross. And

  591. so I want to say to you that before you

  592. and I can ever deal with sin in our own

  593. lives, they must be dealt with once and

  594. for all on the cross. When you believe

  595. Jesus died for your sin and rose again

  596. and you confess your faith in Jesus

  597. Christ, God then considers your death

  598. sentence to be served by Jesus. That's

  599. his grace. And when you trust in him, he

  600. credits you with righteousness. And he

  601. no longer sees your sin because your sin

  602. was dealt with once and for all at the

  603. cross. Jesus made atonement. But listen

  604. very carefully. For that atonement to be

  605. applied to you. You must believe on him.

  606. You must accept his payment for your sin

  607. by faith.

  608. Once you have done that, once you have

  609. trusted Christ, once your sin has been

  610. dealt with on the cross, Jesus then

  611. frees you not only from sin's penalty,

  612. but from sin's power in your life. That

  613. is why the apostle Paul said in Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  614. chapter 6, "Let not therefore sin reign

  615. in your mortal body." That you are no

  616. longer the servants of sin. Christ broke

  617. the chains of sin to free you to live

  618. righteously before him. He made you a

  619. new creature. Therefore, old things are

  620. passed away. All things are become new.

  621. He took out your heart of stone and put

  622. in a heart of flesh. He gave you his

  623. Holy Spirit who causes you to walk in

  624. God's ways, to keep God's commandments,

  625. and to live for God's glory. Friends,

  626. that is the power that Christ has given

  627. you through faith in him. He dealt with

  628. sin's penalty and he freed you from

  629. sin's power. And now if you walk in sin,

  630. it is only because you choose to.

  631. It's no longer your master.

  632. And so the catalyst then

  633. to deal with sin

  634. is a burning zeal for God's glory. The

  635. same thing that was true for Phineas is

  636. true for us. that it is a zeal for God

  637. that will lead you to deal with sin.

  638. It's a zeal for God. That zeal that

  639. consumed Jesus in the temple and the

  640. zeal that carried Jesus to the cross is

  641. the same zeal that he calls for among

  642. his people. In Revelation chapter 3,

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  643. Jesus writes to the indifferent,

  644. apathetic,

  645. lukewarm church from Leodysia

  646. and he corrects them and he calls them

  647. to buy from him to seek from him to look

  648. to him and they finishes with this

  649. command. Be zealous therefore and

  650. repent.

  651. He calls them not to let sin be

  652. tolerated, not to let it fester beneath

  653. the surface of their church, but he

  654. called them to rise up like Phineas did

  655. with this great zeal and to repent of

  656. it, to do away with it, and to turn back

  657. to Jesus Christ.

  658. That's what he calls the church to do.

  659. And so I want to say that if a church,

  660. if a Christian or if a church ever

  661. becomes tolerant of sin, it is because

  662. it lacks a zeal for God.

  663. And that's true for me and it's true for

  664. you. If we ever grow comfortable with

  665. tolerating sin, we must check our zeal

  666. because we know that our zeal is not

  667. there.

  668. What we need to understand is because

  669. Jesus's zeal for God led him to deal

  670. with our sin that we should have a

  671. burning zeal for God's glory that leads

  672. us to deal zealously and decisively with

  673. our own sin. It should lead you to take

  674. drastic action when drunkenness has

  675. overtaken your life. that yes, it starts

  676. with getting on your knees before God in

  677. repentance to acknowledge that that

  678. alcohol has been my master for far too

  679. long. But don't be content to weep at

  680. the tabernacle's door. It's time to rise

  681. up and take action, to pour the bottle

  682. down the drain, to seek some counseling,

  683. to get involved with a group, to try to

  684. get victory over that. You got to take

  685. drastic action and deal decisively with

  686. it. Friend, if you have struggled with

  687. pornography or sexual sin, you need to

  688. come clean first before God, but you

  689. need to take drastic action in your

  690. life. You need to you need to get some

  691. accountability in your life. You need to

  692. come clean, whether it's before your

  693. spouse or before a close godly influence

  694. in your life or even if it's before your

  695. pastor, and seek counsel to get through

  696. that. God's plan for your life is not to

  697. indulge yourself and apologize and do it

  698. again the next day. God's plan for your

  699. life is to free you completely from it.

  700. But I wonder how many who are enslaved

  701. to sexual sin are willing to take

  702. drastic action in their lives. How many

  703. are willing to take the javelin to their

  704. phone or to their computer? How many are

  705. willing to to uh move out, to uh to to

  706. come clean, to uh get help, to get an

  707. accountability app on your phone or

  708. something of that nature, but to deal

  709. decisively with it, to not be content

  710. living in this in this life of of of

  711. saying, "God, I'm sorry. Please forgive

  712. me." And then doing it again, and God,

  713. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. And doing

  714. it again. know to take drastic action

  715. that will help free you completely from

  716. it. If you have anger issues that you

  717. know profains God's name at work or at

  718. school or at home where people look at

  719. your life and you identify as a

  720. Christian and yet you're extremely

  721. judgmental, you're extremely shortfused

  722. and can snap like that.

  723. It's time to take drastic action.

  724. You need to acknowledge it's not just

  725. how you've always been. It's not just

  726. how you were brought up. No. No. When

  727. Christ saved your soul, he freed you

  728. from that.

  729. But sometimes

  730. we want what we want. Sometimes we're

  731. more zealous about our sin than we are

  732. about God's glory. And that's when we

  733. know something isn't right.

  734. when I'm content

  735. to just tolerate it.

  736. I've lost my zeal for God.

  737. If we're ever tolerant of sin, if we're

  738. ever unwilling to deal decisively with

  739. it, we need to check our zeal. Let me

  740. say that I am zealous and jealous for my

  741. wife.

  742. If a man tries to entice her, allure

  743. her, assault her, or harm her, how do

  744. you think I'm going to respond to that?

  745. I'm going to rise up and I'm probably

  746. going to take something like a javelin

  747. in my hand and I'm going to go after

  748. them with everything that I have. Why?

  749. Because I love her. Because I'm zealous

  750. for her. Listen, God is jealous over you

  751. with a great jealousy. Why? His only son

  752. gave his life to redeem your soul from

  753. the very sins that have bound you for so

  754. long. And God loves you and brought you

  755. to himself. And he made this new

  756. covenant with you. And he's promised you

  757. eternal life. And he wants to fellowship

  758. with you. He wants you to experience

  759. closeness with him. And what he sees in

  760. your life is that something,

  761. another lover,

  762. another sin is enticing you, alluring

  763. you, harassing you, and assaulting you.

  764. And God is jealous over you. And that's

  765. why he sent his son Jesus. But I wonder

  766. how many of us are zealous

  767. for him. How many of us have such a

  768. burning zeal for God that leads us to

  769. decisive action in our lives?

  770. What about in our church as well?

  771. Well, a burning zeal for God's glory

  772. should lead us to deal decisively with

  773. sin in the congregation as well.

  774. I'm concerned that in our day and time,

  775. too many churches are too content to

  776. tolerate sin,

  777. to never confront it among its people.

  778. And the reason why is because we have

  779. this tendency to sympathize with sinners

  780. because we are among them. But God calls

  781. us to be zealous for his glory. He calls

  782. us to align ourselves and to sympathize

  783. with the violation of his holiness. How

  784. crude would it be when somebody has

  785. harmed a child that we would do

  786. everything that we can to try to defend

  787. their rights

  788. instead of the child. And yet, how many

  789. times when God is so harmed and offended

  790. by our sin that we don't care about him?

  791. And yet, that's what many churches do.

  792. But what the scripture calls us to do is

  793. to align with God.

  794. It goes without saying that we will not

  795. deal with sin just as Phineas does.

  796. Again, we're not calling for vigilante

  797. Christians to hunt down members at their

  798. homes with javelins and torches in hand.

  799. That's not what we're talking about. But

  800. it's called church discipline. See, we

  801. as a church, people have a hard time

  802. delineating between this. You see, in

  803. the Old Testament covenant, all of this

  804. like cutting off and putting to death

  805. and all that, the law establishes that

  806. the wages of sin is death.

  807. But the New Testament reveals to us that

  808. the gift of God is eternal life through

  809. Jesus Christ our Lord. Why? Because

  810. Jesus served the death sentence for us.

  811. Therefore, we do not have the right in

  812. and of ourselves to take justice into

  813. our own hands. He's given us a justice

  814. system to do that. But when it comes

  815. within the congregation of God's people,

  816. we are called to be zealous for God and

  817. to confront sin for the sake of his

  818. church's purity.

  819. What Jesus teaches first is one-on-one.

  820. That that church discipline is not just

  821. bringing people before the church,

  822. embarrassing them, shaming them, and

  823. kicking them out of the church. That is

  824. not what it's about. As well, when one

  825. brother over here comes to one brother

  826. over here and says, "Look, I love you,

  827. man, but I saw the way that you went off

  828. at your wife, and that was just wrong. I

  829. realize how frustrating it gets, but you

  830. got to understand she's a daughter of

  831. God. That's not how you talk to her.

  832. Nobody likes to be confronted, right? We

  833. we like to, especially here in America,

  834. we demand our rights. We demand our

  835. freedoms. Don't judge me. You know, we

  836. got all that going on. But yet Jesus

  837. told us that if a brother offends, you

  838. go directly to them and you say, "Hey,

  839. that's wrong." It's it's when a sister

  840. sees another sister coming out of a bar

  841. in a drunken stouper and you call her up

  842. and you go and visit with her and say,

  843. "Hey, I I I know you're going through

  844. some hard stuff, but I saw you come out

  845. of the bar. Were you drunk?"

  846. Because God calls us to sobriety.

  847. And that's wrong. And when that person

  848. repents in that moment, you have helped

  849. them and you have helped maintain the

  850. purity of the church.

  851. If they don't repent, Jesus says to

  852. bring one or two others and get involved

  853. in that. And and if they still don't

  854. repent, then you bring it before the

  855. church. And if they refuse and they do

  856. not repent, then you put them out of the

  857. membership. You you cut them off. Why?

  858. Because you're treating them as if they

  859. are spiritually dead because they're not

  860. living as if they're spiritually alive

  861. in Christ.

  862. If they repent,

  863. you welcome them back. That's what the

  864. Bible teaches. Church discipline is

  865. about restoration. It shows believers

  866. the way you're living is not okay with

  867. God. He's still angry about sin. You're

  868. not going to lose your salvation, but

  869. you're sure acting like you don't have

  870. it. So, how should we treat you like you

  871. do have it? You need to get right. And

  872. it helps that person to be accountable

  873. to God to come and get right. And it

  874. keeps the church pure.

  875. Jesus called the church of Leo Leodysia.

  876. Be zealous therefore and repent.

  877. He calls us to that zeal. Zeal is the

  878. catalyst that leads us to deal with sin.

  879. But let me say to you that zeal can't be

  880. mustered up on your own. You don't just

  881. wake up one morning and say, "I'm gonna

  882. be zealous for God today. My life's

  883. gonna be completely changed. I'm never

  884. going back to that sin. I'm gonna take

  885. decisive action." You don't just wake up

  886. one morning and have that zeal. You

  887. can't fake zeal. Zeal must be

  888. cultivated.

  889. How do I cultivate zeal?

  890. Phineas.

  891. Why was he zealous?

  892. This zeal did not come impulsively in

  893. this moment. Who is Phineas?

  894. He is the son of Eleazar who is the son

  895. of Aaron the high priest. Now Aaron has

  896. already died in the wilderness. His son

  897. Eleazar

  898. has become the high priest which means

  899. Phineas is the son of the high priest.

  900. And what that means is that Phineas as a

  901. grandson of Aaron and a son of Eleazar,

  902. he has spent the vast majority of the

  903. last 40 years, I don't know how old he

  904. is, but at least the last 40 years in

  905. close proximity to the glory of God.

  906. He has spent his days in the tabernacle

  907. with the cloud right there.

  908. He has spent his days going inside to

  909. the holy place and preparing showbread

  910. and mixing incense and burning it on

  911. that altar and tending to the

  912. candlestick. He has spent his time

  913. blood splattered all over him because of

  914. the sacrifices for sin. Phineas has been

  915. in close contact with God and therefore

  916. he has understood the cost of sin and

  917. the magnitude of God's holiness.

  918. And it was this day after day after day

  919. cultivation

  920. of this zeal for God. There's close

  921. proximity to God.

  922. And so I want to say to you today

  923. that you cultivate zeal only through

  924. close proximity to God.

  925. It's when you spend daily consistent

  926. time in prayer, in fellowship, in

  927. worship, in reading his word, learning

  928. about him, discovering more of him. It's

  929. when you spend consistent time

  930. confessing before him on your knees even

  931. the littlest of sins in your life.

  932. It is that kind of closeness to God that

  933. cultivates a zeal for God that leads you

  934. to deal with sin.

  935. And so as a church, because God, because

  936. the Lord Jesus zealously dealt with our

  937. sin at the cross, may we zealously deal

  938. with sin in our lives and in our church.

  939. But that will only come

  940. as we together

  941. cultivate a closer relationship with

  942. God. Let's pray. Father,

  943. we're humbled by your grace to us in

  944. spite of our sin, in spite of our

  945. fallenness.

  946. That you are jealous for us,

  947. seeking to save us, deliver us from the

  948. enticement and allurement of sin.

  949. And we all are going to struggle with

  950. it. And this is not a message that says

  951. we can pick ourselves up by our own

  952. bootstraps

  953. and get it done and rid our lives of

  954. sin. This is a power that is only

  955. realized through the gospel.

  956. We need the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse

  957. us and to purify us from sin. And we

  958. need to draw closer to you. That's the

  959. best news about this is that if we are

  960. in Christ,

  961. we can cultivate this close relationship

  962. with you if we will but draw near. And

  963. so I pray for our church family tonight

  964. that we would all recognize that we are

  965. fallen, but our fallen nature doesn't

  966. mean we should tolerate sin.

  967. We need this zeal to deal decisively

  968. with it. You know what your people need

  969. tonight and I pray that we would humbly

  970. respond in faith and obedience to you.

  971. In Jesus name I pray. Hey.
