  1. Amen. I encourage you to take your

  2. prayer list and pray for your fellow

  3. members here uh this coming week. Want

  4. do want to mention that we do have

  5. Easter tracks and door hangers as well

  6. on the welcome table. Um we'll be doing

  7. those next week, but there are some if

  8. you want to do your own neighborhood,

  9. your own block or whatever that might

  10. be. We wanted to make those available to

  11. you as well. Let's take our Bibles and

  12. go to Numbers chapter 23.

    Numbers 23 chapter mention

  13. Numbers 23 as we'll continue in our

  14. series here through the book of Numbers,

  15. God's way in life's wilderness. We're in

  16. the account about uh Balum. Balam is a

  17. pagan soothsayer who is hired by the

  18. Moabites and the Midionites to curse

  19. Israel in hopes of gaining an advantage

  20. and victory over them. God, however,

  21. told Balam not to curse Israel because

  22. they are blessed. Balam decides to go

  23. anyways and the Lord sends his angel to

  24. get in his way with a drawn sword in his

  25. hand. And Balam's donkey turns into the

  26. wilderness and then crushes his foot

  27. against the wall and then plops down

  28. right underneath him. One of the most

  29. humorous stories in the Bible. God opens

  30. the mouth of the donkey. The donkey

  31. begins to talk to Balam and be like,

  32. "Why are you hitting me? Have I ever

  33. acted this way?" And Balam says, "Well,

  34. no." And then it says, "God opened his

  35. eyes and he saw the angel of the Lord

  36. and it says he fell flat on his face

  37. before God." God told him to go ahead

  38. and go, but only speak what the Lord

  39. says. And so last week we looked at his

  40. first two oracles that really were

  41. designed to communicate this to Bailac

  42. that Israel can't be cursed because

  43. God's blessing can't be reversed. That's

  44. what we saw in those first two oracles.

  45. What we're looking at tonight is the

  46. final oracles that Balam gives. It's

  47. actually uh one oracle and then a series

  48. of four at the very end. And what God is

  49. doing is he's offering Israel some

  50. assurance of the outcome of his

  51. blessing. That's what we're looking at

  52. tonight. So let's look at Numbers

    Numbers 23 chapter mention

  53. chapter 23. We'll begin reading in verse

  54. 27. And then we'll read through the end

  55. of chapter 24.

  56. Bible says, "And Bailac said unto Balam,

  57. come I pray thee, and I will bring thee

  58. unto another place, per adventure it

  59. will please God, that thou mayest curse

  60. me them from thence." And Bailac brought

  61. Balam unto the top of Peor that lookth

  62. toward Jeson. And Balam said unto

  63. Bailac, "Build me here seven altars, and

  64. prepare me here seven bulocks, and seven

  65. rams." And Bale did as Balam had said,

  66. and offered a bulock and a ram on every

  67. altar. And when Balam saw that it went

  68. that it pleased the Lord to bless

  69. Israel, he went not as other times to

  70. seek for enchantments, but he set his

  71. face toward the wilderness. And Balam

  72. lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel

  73. abiding in his tents according to their

  74. tribes. And the spirit of God came upon

  75. him. And he took up his parable and

  76. said, Balam the son of Bor hath said,

  77. and the man whose eyes are open hath

  78. said, he hath said, which heard the

  79. words of God, which saw the vision of

  80. the Almighty, falling into a trance, but

  81. having his eyes open. How goodly are thy

  82. tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O

  83. Israel. As the valleys are they spread

  84. forth, as gardens by the river's side,

  85. as the trees of lime alows which the

  86. Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees

  87. beside the waters. He shall pour the

  88. water out of his buckets, and his seed

  89. shall be in many waters, and his king

  90. shall be higher than Aag, and his

  91. kingdom shall be exalted. God brought

  92. him forth out of Egypt. He hath as it

  93. were the strength of a unicorn. He shall

  94. eat up the nations, his enemies, and

  95. shall break their bones and pierce them

  96. through with his arrows. He couched. He

  97. lay down as a lion, and as a great lion,

  98. who shall stir him up? Blessed is he

  99. that blessth thee, and cursed is he that

  100. cursseth thee? And Balac's anger was

  101. kindled against Balam. And he smote his

  102. hands together. And Bailac said unto

  103. Balam, I called thee to curse mine

  104. enemies, and behold, thou hast

  105. altogether blessed them these three

  106. times. Therefore now flee thou into thy

  107. place. I thought to promote thee unto

  108. great honor, but lo, the Lord hath kept

  109. thee back from honor. And Balam said

  110. unto Bailac, "Spake I not also to thy

  111. messengers, which thou sentest unto me,

  112. saying, If Bailac would give me his

  113. house full of silver and gold, I cannot

  114. go beyond the commandment of the Lord to

  115. do either good or bad of mine own." But

  116. what the Lord saith, that will I speak.

  117. And now, behold, I go unto my people.

  118. Come therefore, and I will advertise

  119. thee what this people shall do to thy

  120. people in the latter days." And he took

  121. up his parable and said, "Balam the son

  122. of Bor hath said, and the man whose eyes

  123. are opened hath said, he hath said,

  124. which heard the words of God, and knew

  125. the the knowledge of the most high,

  126. which saw the vision of the Almighty

  127. falling into a trance, but having his

  128. eyes open. I shall see him, but not now.

  129. I shall behold him, but not nigh. There

  130. shall come a star out of Jacob, and a

  131. scepter shall rise out of Israel, and

  132. shall smite the corners of Moab, and

  133. destroy all the children of Sheth. And

  134. Edom shall be a possession. Seir also

  135. shall be a possession for his enemies.

  136. And Israel shall do valiantly. Out of

  137. Jacob shall come he that shall have

  138. dominion, and shall destroy him that

  139. remainth of the city. And when he looked

  140. on Amalecch, he took up his parable and

  141. said, "Amalec was the first of the

  142. nations, but his latter end shall be

  143. that he perish forever." And he looked

  144. upon the Kennites, and took up his

  145. parable, and said, Strong is thy

  146. dwelling place. Thou putest thy nest in

  147. a rock. Nevertheless, the Kennites shall

  148. be wasted until Asher shall carry thee

  149. away captive. And he took up his parable

  150. and said, 'Alas, who shall live when God

  151. doeth this? And ships shall come from

  152. the coast of Kdum and shall afflict

  153. Asher and shall afflict Eber, and he

  154. also shall perish forever. And Balam

  155. rose up and went and returned to his

  156. place. And Bailac also went his way.

  157. Interesting and somewhat difficult

  158. language and terms to understand. And

  159. that's because this is poetic

  160. parallelism in this discourse that he is

  161. giving. It's not always the way that we

  162. talk, but I believe that God will help

  163. us to make it clear what he's getting

  164. across. So the title of our message

  165. tonight is rest for the blessed. Rest

  166. for the blessed. And so let's pray one

  167. more time. Ask God to help us. Lord, I

  168. just want to ask you one more time to

  169. give us clarity on this text. I need

  170. your help to speak it in a way that

  171. would be clear and in a way that would

  172. be practical and helpful. And certainly

  173. we want to glorify our savior Jesus

  174. through it. For every word of God will

  175. ultimately speak toward him. And so help

  176. us to do that just tonight. In Jesus

  177. name I pray. Amen.

  178. Whenever you're worn out, what's the one

  179. thing that you really want? It's rest,

  180. right? Just long for rest. ice cream.

  181. Okay, that's one thing that you could

  182. want. But I would say most of us would

  183. probably say rest. I mean, think about

  184. when you get home from a 12-hour shift

  185. at work, your feet are sore, your ankles

  186. are popping, your knees are aching, and

  187. and you're you're you might have a

  188. headache as you're heading home, or it

  189. might be that you even dozed off a

  190. little bit as you were heading home

  191. because you're just exhausted. Well,

  192. then you can come home and when you get

  193. home, your wife's ready to talk, the

  194. kids are ready to play, the dogs up in

  195. your face, and and you're just like,

  196. "Man, just give me a moment here to kick

  197. back and rest." That's how we can feel.

  198. Or after a long week of work and study

  199. and exams and projects, you maybe clock

  200. out on Friday and you're coming to the

  201. weekend and you sometimes the only thing

  202. that really sounds appealing to you is

  203. the pillow and your bed. just want to

  204. get some sleep. Or you might go on a

  205. Disney vacation, you know, because you

  206. go on vacation to rest, right? And so

  207. you go to Disney and you do three parks

  208. in three days and you're you've walked,

  209. you know, dozens of miles throughout the

  210. course of that week. And if you don't

  211. take a couple days at the end of that

  212. week to rest and recover, by the time

  213. you get home and you head back to work,

  214. you'll feel like you just want to go

  215. back and get some rest. That's what

  216. you're still longing for. Well, just as

  217. we long for rest when we are worn out,

  218. after 40 years of wilderness wanderings,

  219. Israel is worn out. I think as we've

  220. come through this journey with Israel,

  221. we could see many of the reasons why

  222. they, as a nation, have endured slavery

  223. for 430 years. They've wandered in the

  224. desert for 40 years, camping out,

  225. scraping and clawing for resources,

  226. enduring rebellion, plagues, suffering,

  227. and death in the wilderness. They've

  228. been opposed by their brothers, the

  229. They faced some battles. They've walked

  230. thousands of miles and have dealt with

  231. hunger and thirst plenteously along the

  232. way. And I think it'd be safe to say

  233. that they were worn out. And what their

  234. souls are really long for at this stage

  235. of the journey as they are right on the

  236. other side of the Jordan River is for

  237. that land of rest that has been promised

  238. to their fathers. That's what they're

  239. longing for. But we know of course that

  240. what stands between them and rest is the

  241. book of Joshua. Battles to fight, giants

  242. to face, walls to destroy. There's a lot

  243. that they are facing ahead, cities to

  244. conquer. and and it's kind of like

  245. coming home from a long day expecting to

  246. rest only to find conflict. That's what

  247. it feels like at the end of this

  248. journey. And you know what? That's a lot

  249. of times what the Christian life is

  250. like, isn't it? There are times in our

  251. lives when we can be worn down by

  252. whether it's work or whether it's

  253. conflict in our lives or whether it's uh

  254. just the the daily struggle of life, the

  255. battles that we face. We're we're

  256. longing for rest and then another battle

  257. comes. Another battle battles with sin,

  258. battles with spiritual opposition or

  259. internal fleshly demons, so to speak,

  260. dark thoughts,

  261. wars with anger, lust, pride,

  262. selfishness.

  263. That's what we face. We face financial

  264. hardships, failing health, check engine

  265. lights,

  266. you know, and it seems like just as you

  267. come through one thing, you're coming

  268. into another thing. That's a lot of

  269. times how the Christian life feels. And

  270. sometimes we can feel so worn down by

  271. the battles that we wonder if victory is

  272. even achievable. If I'm going to get

  273. through this, how am I ever going to

  274. overcome sin? Will will evil ever leave

  275. me alone and stop tempting me and stop

  276. oppressing me? Will I ever find the rest

  277. my soul is longing for? That's what we

  278. could ask to. Well, in this text

  279. tonight, the Lord is offering assurance

  280. of victory to his weary people. He wants

  281. Israel to understand from these final

  282. oracles that they can have assurance of

  283. victory to come. That as they go in to

  284. conquer the promised land, they can know

  285. that victory will be achieved. And it's

  286. because of these two promises that God

  287. gives to Israel in these oracles. Now,

  288. you might say, "I don't see Israel in

  289. this text. This is Balum talking to

  290. Bailac, the king of Moab. And so, what

  291. does Israel have to do with this?" Well,

  292. who's reading numbers for the first

  293. time? Israel. And so, what's the reality

  294. is is camped down here in the valley.

  295. And something is going on up in the

  296. mountain that at this point they don't

  297. even know about.

  298. But they're going to find out. And the

  299. way they're going to find out is because

  300. of the sin that takes place in the next

  301. chapter. And it's going to reveal later

  302. in chapter 31 that Balam counseledled

  303. Bailac to send Israel into this sin. You

  304. can't curse him, so you might as well

  305. destroy him from within. That was kind

  306. of what happened. And so they're going

  307. to learn about Balum, and they're going

  308. to learn about what was going on. And as

  309. they come through this, they realize

  310. through these oracles that Balum makes

  311. under the spirit of God's power that God

  312. has promises for them. These promises

  313. are meant to assure them of present

  314. victories.

  315. But I want to tell you today that we're

  316. not just here to talk about Israel. Of

  317. course, God's word is profitable for all

  318. of us for instruction. We saw in 1

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  319. Corinthians chapter 10 that Paul refers

  320. to a number of things here in the

  321. wilderness journey. And it says these

  322. were our examples that we should not sin

  323. as they sinned but that we should trust

  324. God. And so we understand that numbers

  325. has valuable truth for us today.

  326. And the truth for us is found in the

  327. same promises that were given to them.

  328. What are they? Well, let's look at them

  329. together. I want you to see first of all

  330. that to assure Israel of victory, the

  331. Lord promised a guaranteed rest. a

  332. guaranteed rest. What happens here? I'm

  333. going to do this like we did last week

  334. and kind of summarize the narrative side

  335. of things. It's kind of like same story,

  336. second, third, and fourth verse. So, I'm

  337. just going to summarize these things.

  338. We're really going to focus on the

  339. prophetic oracles that uh Balam gives

  340. off here. And so, Bailac takes Balam to

  341. yet another place. This is what he's

  342. done. We'll try to curse them from here.

  343. Okay. Can't curse them from there. Let's

  344. go over here and try to curse. Nope.

  345. Can't curse them from there. So now he's

  346. saying, "All right, well, let's go over

  347. to this place and maybe it will please

  348. God." This is what Bail's asking. Maybe

  349. it will please God to curse them from

  350. there. And so he takes him there and he

  351. goes through the whole sacrificial

  352. system again of seven rams and seven

  353. bulocks on seven altars. And then Balam

  354. uh sees, however, as we move into

  355. chapter 24, that it pleased God to bless

  356. Israel. He understands this because of

  357. what God told him initially, but then

  358. also because of the angel of the Lord

  359. that stood in his way. And now through

  360. these first two oracles, he understands

  361. there's no enchantment, there's no

  362. magical curse or spell, no amount of

  363. divination that I can do to move God to

  364. curse this people. They're blessed. He's

  365. made up his mind. So it says that

  366. instead of this time seeking after

  367. enchantments that this time he just set

  368. his face toward the wilderness and he

  369. looked at Israel and it says that the

  370. spirit of God came upon him. And so this

  371. is not a prophetic oracle that comes

  372. from his own divination or enchantments.

  373. This comes straight from God.

  374. It says that he takes up his parable and

  375. the Lord gives him this vision of

  376. Israel's future and it begins to show

  377. and let me just give you kind of what

  378. this vision is in a nutshell. Israel

  379. will flourish into a powerful kingdom of

  380. rest. That's what it communicates.

  381. Israel will flourish into a powerful

  382. kingdom of rest. So let's look at it

  383. together in verse number three. and he

  384. took up his parable and said, and I want

  385. you to notice this. This is going to

  386. echo back to when the Lord got in his

  387. way and he fell flat on his face and he

  388. saw the angel of the Lord, which is like

  389. a visible manifestation of God there

  390. with a sword drawn in his hand. And so,

  391. it's going to echo back to some of that,

  392. but I want you to notice the that what

  393. this is doing is it's like piling on

  394. affirmation that this came from God. It

  395. says uh it says there in verse number

  396. three, Balam the son of Bor hath said

  397. and the man whose eyes are open hath

  398. said he hath said which heard the words

  399. of God which saw the vision of the

  400. almighty falling into a trance but

  401. having his eyes open. The idea is of

  402. falling into a trance is that he's not

  403. in control right now. Why? The spirit of

  404. God has come upon him is what it says uh

  405. back in verse number two. And so as the

  406. spirit of God comes upon him, he is

  407. speaking on God's behalf. And he says

  408. this in verse 5, "How goodly are thy

  409. tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O

  410. Israel." So he's looking out in the

  411. wilderness. And it tells us that he sees

  412. Israel camping tribe by tribe. And

  413. you'll remember that arrangement from

  414. the beginning of numbers where you've

  415. got uh God's tabernacle in the middle.

  416. The cloud of God's glory is over it and

  417. then you've got the kind of like a

  418. square formation here that as they are

  419. camped around the tabernacle of God. And

  420. so he sees their encampment and he says,

  421. "Man, this is beautiful. This is

  422. beautiful. How goodly are thy tents and

  423. thy tabernacles, oh Jacob." And so this

  424. tells us this first part is going to be

  425. talking about the camp of Israel. And

  426. here's what he says in verse 6. As the

  427. valleys are they spread forth as gardens

  428. by a river's side, as the trees of lines

  429. which the Lord hath planted, and as

  430. cedar trees beside the waters. You get

  431. this picture here. This big beautiful

  432. lush green valley, a a flowing river

  433. coming through it, trees flourishing

  434. around it, the fragrant of these the

  435. fragrance of these line allows. And so

  436. he he is seeing Israel as a lush

  437. flourishing camp. They have multiplied

  438. and they are spreading forth throughout

  439. this valley. And really what this is is

  440. it is a present blessing of promise

  441. fulfilled. That what he is proclaiming

  442. here is that God has multiplied them

  443. just as he said he would to Abraham,

  444. Isaac, and Jacob. He's fulfilled that

  445. promise. Now, just as we've seen in

  446. these previous oracles, it focuses here

  447. on the fulfilled promise of God that

  448. they are a lush, thriving, flourishing

  449. kingdom. But now it's going to say that

  450. they will be a powerful kingdom of rest.

  451. It says in verse 7, he shall pour the

  452. water out of his buckets. That's like an

  453. abundance of of water that that he's

  454. going to overflow the bucket here and

  455. his seed shall be in many waters. And so

  456. the idea is that it's going to continue

  457. to flourish. It's going to continue to

  458. grow. It's going to continue to to flow.

  459. And then it says, "And his king shall be

  460. higher than Aag, and his kingdom shall

  461. be exalted." Aag is like a title of the

  462. Amalachite kings, just like Pharaoh was

  463. a title of the Egyptian kings. And so

  464. it's talking about this Aagite dynasty

  465. here that would have been very powerful.

  466. And if you remember who Amalecch is,

  467. Amalecch is that nomadic tribal

  468. scavenger group that attacked Israel in

  469. the wilderness. and they they they

  470. prayed on the weak and on the feeble and

  471. the old that were in the back, you know.

  472. And so God said, I'm going to have war

  473. with Amalecch throughout her

  474. generations. And so this is this is

  475. saying that there's a king that's going

  476. to come who's going to overpower this

  477. Amalachite dynasty. It says his kingdom

  478. shall be exalted above the others.

  479. Here's the question. How will this

  480. nomadic tribe of Israelites

  481. continue to grow and flourish into an

  482. exalted kingdom with an exalted king?

  483. Verse number eight, God brought him

  484. forth out of Egypt. He hath as it were

  485. the strength of a unicorn. We talked

  486. about this last week. This is not a

  487. magical horse with a rainbow horn coming

  488. out of its snout. This word translated

  489. unicorn is a wild, untameable,

  490. undomemesticated ox that if you can

  491. imagine like the bull riding ones where

  492. where they're just going crazy and

  493. bucking and and the idea of the horns is

  494. that it's got these massive ferocious

  495. horns that push everything out of the

  496. way. Balam says under the spirit of God,

  497. that is what their God is like. that as

  498. he brought them out of Egypt and has

  499. brought them through the wilderness and

  500. is bringing them into Canaan, he is

  501. going before them like this ferocious

  502. beast and he's knocking everything out

  503. of their way. That's how they're going

  504. to grow. That's how they're going to

  505. flourish. Not because of who they are or

  506. what they've done, but because of who

  507. God is and what God does. The result of

  508. God leading them forth is this. He shall

  509. eat up the nations, his enemies, and

  510. shall break their bones and pierce them

  511. through with his arrows. All of this

  512. language is not the language of

  513. continual battle. It's of finished

  514. battle. It's of conquering. It's of

  515. destroying their enemies. And so,

  516. because God is leading their way, Israel

  517. is going to conquer.

  518. And so, so then here is the end result

  519. of this. In verse 9, he couched. The

  520. idea is that he kneelled down. The

  521. imagery here is of a lion. So I want you

  522. to think for a moment. Get the image of

  523. your mind as we saw in the oracle last

  524. week when the lion rose up and the lion

  525. went out and would not return and rest

  526. until he had conquered his prey. That's

  527. what we saw last week. And now this week

  528. he says he's coming back and he's

  529. kneeling down and he's lying down. And

  530. who shall stir him up? Now, this is

  531. interesting. This is a direct quote from

  532. Jacob's blessing upon Judah at his

  533. deathbed in Genesis 49. Direct quote. It

  534. says, "Judah is like a couching lion.

  535. And as a great lion, who shall rouse him

  536. up?" is how it's worded in Genesis

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  537. chapter 49. What this is doing, what

  538. Israel would catch from this is that

  539. this is talking about a lion king who

  540. would rise up from the tribe of Judah

  541. and would lead Israel into battle and

  542. his brethren would go behind him. Now,

  543. by this point in the narrative, we have

  544. found that Judah is the captain of

  545. Israel. That Judah is the one leading

  546. the way. They're the first one to go out

  547. in the camp. They're the one who camps

  548. uh closest to the tabernacle. They're

  549. the banner that leads the way. And so

  550. Judah is now rising to the top here. And

  551. they are recognizing this that with God

  552. leading our way as an ox and with the

  553. lion of Judah leading our way as a king,

  554. we are all going to lie down and rest in

  555. this exalted kingdom. See what God's

  556. telling him? Rest is coming. Rest is

  557. guaranteed. This is the promise of God.

  558. the king will be exalted. You will

  559. conquer your enemies and you will lie

  560. down with him to rest. And then he

  561. finishes off with this familiar refrain.

  562. Blessed is he that blesseth thee and

  563. cursed is he that cursseeth thee. Those

  564. who lie down in this kingdom of rest

  565. under the reigning king will be blessed

  566. with Israel. But those who stand against

  567. this king and this kingdom like Moab and

  568. the Midionites and the Amalocites, they

  569. will come under a curse.

  570. And so the Lord's promise here to Israel

  571. is a guaranteed rest. And his desire is

  572. that this guaranteed rest would assure

  573. them of promised victory to come. Why?

  574. Because how are they going to lie down

  575. and rest in this land? How is this king

  576. going to be exalted and this kingdom be

  577. lifted up? How is that going to happen

  578. unless Israel has a successful conquest

  579. of the land? That's God's exact point.

  580. To assure them of victory by promising

  581. them a guaranteed rest. The outcome of

  582. God's blessing is that their enemies

  583. will be defeated and they will lie down

  584. to rest. And this future outcome can

  585. give them assurance of victory today.

  586. That they can have victory over Moab.

  587. They can face the Amalachites and the

  588. Canaanites and trust that walls will

  589. come down and giants will fall and

  590. armies will be destroyed. Because just

  591. as God has fulfilled his promise to

  592. multiply Israel into this flourishing

  593. nation, they can trust that God's going

  594. to fulfill this promise to bring victory

  595. and rest. So therefore, fight these

  596. battles today because on the other side

  597. is a lasting rest. That's the first

  598. promise the Lord gives, guaranteed rest.

  599. But Balam has another oracle to give.

  600. And in this second oracle, it provides a

  601. promise to assure them of how that rest

  602. will really come. And so to assure

  603. Israel of victory. Number two, the Lord

  604. promised not only a guaranteed rest, but

  605. he promises them a guaranteed rain. A

  606. guaranteed rain is coming. Bailac is

  607. furious

  608. in the middle. I I don't I almost wonder

  609. if this last series of oracles was

  610. actually part of the first because

  611. Bailac claps his hands in the middle of

  612. this thing as he's blessed is he that

  613. blesseth thee and cursed is he that

  614. curse thee. And it says bail smoked his

  615. hands together. Hey, knock it off. I've

  616. hired you to bless them and you've

  617. cursed them these three times now. He

  618. said, I would have given you great

  619. honor, but the Lord has kept you back

  620. from honor. Balam reiterates, I've told

  621. you and I told your messengers, even if

  622. you gave me your household of silver and

  623. gold, I could only say what the Lord

  624. tells me to say. Balam says,"All right,

  625. I'll go my own way. I'll return to my

  626. people. But I've got a final word for

  627. you. I'm going to tell you what this

  628. people shall do to your people in the

  629. latter days. Emphasize that word, the

  630. latter days. That means later, not now.

  631. It could, but it also has this

  632. connotation of in the future, but also

  633. in the end times. And so it signals to

  634. us early on that what we're about to

  635. hear has a distant uh fulfillment, but

  636. then it also has an even more distant

  637. fulfillment, an already but not yet idea

  638. to this. And so let's look at this final

  639. oracle here in verse 15.

  640. It says he took up his parable and said

  641. once again, Balam the son of BR hath

  642. said and the man whose eyes are open

  643. hath said he hath said which heard the

  644. words of God and knew the knowledge of

  645. the most high which saw the vision of

  646. the almighty falling into a trance but

  647. having his eyes open. Again, this comes

  648. from God. Notice verse 17. I shall see

  649. him but not now. I shall behold him but

  650. not nigh. He says, "I I see somebody

  651. coming, but he's not coming yet." Well,

  652. exactly who is it? He says, "A star.

  653. There shall come a star out of Jacob."

  654. Now, the heathen nations would use the

  655. word star to symbolically represent a

  656. king. And so, in his own understanding,

  657. he recognizes that a king is coming. But

  658. then it uses this word and a scepter

  659. shall rise out of Israel. And so you

  660. have this word scepter which is the

  661. royal staff. Now if you were to go back

  662. to Genesis 49 in the very same blessing

  663. that Jacob gives to Judah, he tells them

  664. this. The scepter shall not depart from

  665. the house of Judah until Shiloh come.

  666. Shiloh is a Hebrew word that means the

  667. one to whom it belongs. And so what that

  668. means is Judah is going to be a

  669. placeholder for a king to come. But then

  670. that even that king who receives the

  671. scepter will be a placeholder for

  672. another king to come. And so Balum is

  673. saying here that there is a king coming

  674. from Israel. And what will this king do?

  675. It says there in verse 17, "He shall

  676. smite the corners of Moab and destroy

  677. all the children of Sheth." Now, there's

  678. debate here about all these different

  679. names and groups because some of these

  680. names share part of the Semitic line,

  681. the descendants of Sheim, which were

  682. blessed by God. And so, you're looking

  683. at this and and wondering, is this

  684. talking about the children of Seth or or

  685. And so, there's different ones that

  686. we're going to see that. But what I want

  687. you to understand in this poetic

  688. parallelism is when two names are given,

  689. they're referring to the same people.

  690. Israel and Jacob, Moab and Sheth, Seir

  691. and Edom, those both represent the

  692. Uh you'll have Asher and Eber.

  693. And so these are not those those

  694. descendants that were blessed under

  695. Shem. the we are to understand that

  696. these are different tribal groups in

  697. this immediate area that are

  698. interrelated to each other somehow. And

  699. so what he's saying here is here's what

  700. what the king is going to do to you bail

  701. and your people. He's going to smite all

  702. four corners. You know what that means?

  703. Total destruction. Is to conquer you.

  704. And then in verse 18, Edom who opposed

  705. Israel in the way. These are the

  706. descendants of Esau, Jacob's twin

  707. brother who had the blessing of God. And

  708. yet what we find is because of the

  709. rejection and oppression of

  710. Israel, they lose the blessing. That's

  711. why you have that prophetic statement in

  712. Micah that says, "Jacob have I loved,

  713. Esau have I hated." That it's because

  714. Edom made a conscious decision to oppose

  715. God's people and their brothers. And

  716. therefore God brings them under this

  717. same curse that Edom will be a

  718. possession and Seir will be a possession

  719. for his enemies. And it says this,

  720. Israel shall do valiantly. They're going

  721. to conquer valiantly. It says in verse

  722. number 19, because out of Jacob shall

  723. come he that shall have dominion. He

  724. will reign and shall destroy him that

  725. remainth of the city. Then he sets his

  726. eyes upon different tribal groups in

  727. that area. In verse 20, when he looked

  728. on Amalecch,

  729. that pesty group that continually fought

  730. against Israel and picked them off and

  731. and and and just went after them, the

  732. one that God said, "I'll have war with

  733. them." It says that this king is going

  734. to come up. And it says, "Amalecch was

  735. the first of the nations, but his latter

  736. end shall be that he shall perish

  737. forever. Destruction." Verse 21. and he

  738. looked upon the Kennites. Now, this is

  739. is a little strange because we've seen

  740. the Kennites before.

  741. Moses' father-in-law Jethro and his

  742. brother-in-law Hobab are Kennites. And

  743. so, these are people that have been

  744. friendly to the Israelites. They fall

  745. under the group of the Midionites. But

  746. the Midianites are conspiring in this as

  747. well. And so, thus far, we've seen it

  748. relatively favorably. And so look, it

  749. says he took up his parable and said,

  750. "Strong is thy dwelling place, and now

  751. put us thy nest in a rock." Think about

  752. an eagle's nest up on a cliff in safety

  753. and protection from all the other

  754. buzzards and thing animals that would

  755. want to harm it. It's saying you have

  756. this position that appears protected.

  757. This position that appears strong, and

  758. yet in verse 22, it says, "Nevertheless,

  759. the Kennite shall be wasted until Asher

  760. shall carry thee away captive." Then it

  761. says, "And he took up his parable and

  762. said, alas, who shall live when God

  763. doeth this? God is doing something and

  764. who stands a chance against him?" Says

  765. in verse 24, "Ships shall come from the

  766. coasts of Kdum." Kdum is a name that

  767. refers to seafaring peoples. So it

  768. whether it's the Philistines or people

  769. from Tarses or from Cyprus or Cree or Ty

  770. and Siden that they they would come and

  771. they would afflict Asher. So now Asher

  772. who carried away captive the Kennites he

  773. is now being afflicted and and Eber

  774. would be related to them. But then it

  775. also says and he those of the coast of

  776. Kdum shall perish forever. You know what

  777. this looks like? Kingdoms are going to

  778. rise

  779. but they're all going to fall under this

  780. king and under this people. And Balam

  781. concludes goes his own way and Bailac

  782. goes his own way.

  783. All of this communicates

  784. that this king who will come from Israel

  785. of the lion of the tribe of Judah will

  786. be empowered by God to conquer all of

  787. Israel's enemies. And as verse 19 said,

  788. he shall have dominion.

  789. The king will reign and Israel will

  790. rest.

  791. That's God's message to them. Why?

  792. because they got victories in or they

  793. got battles in front of them. And God

  794. wants them to know no matter how tall

  795. the the walls are, no matter how huge

  796. the giants are, no matter how vast the

  797. armies are, no matter how strong and

  798. fierce their weaponry may be, he wants

  799. them to know that you are going to have

  800. victory over every single one of them.

  801. Why? Because God is bringing them out of

  802. Egypt and into Canaan like this wild ox.

  803. And he's going to push everything out of

  804. the way that may get in the way. and

  805. he's going to establish them in this

  806. land and he's going to bring up a king

  807. who will bring them to rest. The

  808. question of course is who is this king?

  809. Who is this king?

  810. The specific king in view was David. Was

  811. King David

  812. because it was David who was chosen by

  813. God of the tribe of Judah. It was David

  814. who destroyed all of the Amalachites

  815. except for 400 who escaped.

  816. There was uh it was him who subdued the

  817. Moabites, the and the

  818. Philistines. It was David who conquered

  819. valiantly and established the kingdom

  820. and whose son Solomon inherited a

  821. kingdom of peace and rest.

  822. But that rest was short-lived

  823. because David fell with Ba Sheeba. And

  824. his family tail spun into wickedness and

  825. immorality.

  826. And his son Solomon turned to many women

  827. and then turned to their gods. And the

  828. kingdom was torn into. And nobody from

  829. that Davidic line ever lived up to all

  830. that Balum said here.

  831. Therefore, the prophets, inspired by

  832. God, came to the conclusion that a

  833. greater son of David would come and

  834. would finish the job and would conquer

  835. their enemies and secure eternal rest

  836. for his people. And what the Lord is

  837. giving Israel is the assurance of

  838. victory today by promising a guaranteed

  839. rest under a guaranteed reign.

  840. And that promise to them because of the

  841. fallenness of David and of his line has

  842. been brought to us today in his son

  843. Jesus Christ.

  844. The Lord assures you and I of victories

  845. today by promising us as well a

  846. guaranteed rest under Christ's

  847. guaranteed reign. We have the same

  848. promises to us and the same asurances of

  849. victory today because Jesus came from

  850. the house of David and from the tribe of

  851. Judah. And he rode on a donkey into

  852. Jerusalem to bring rest to the kingdom

  853. of Israel. But of course, we know

  854. according to God's divine plan, they

  855. rejected his reign. They crucified him.

  856. But they did not take his life. For he

  857. laid down his life for himself, for our

  858. sin. And he paid the price for all of

  859. our sin, for all of humanity in all of

  860. time through the singular,

  861. allsufficient, perfect, sinless

  862. sacrifice of his own body and his own

  863. blood. And his blood is the atonement

  864. for all of our sin. But the third day,

  865. God raised him from the dead. And 40

  866. days later, he ascended into heaven. And

  867. where was he seated? on a throne. Do you

  868. know what that means? He reigns even

  869. now. And because he reigns today, you

  870. can have rest today. See, this is not

  871. just a promise for off in the future.

  872. This is a promise that makes a

  873. difference in your life today. Because

  874. in Hebrews chapter 4 and verse number

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  875. three, it says, "For we which have

  876. believed do enter into rest." The

  877. context of that verse is the wilderness

  878. context. The generation that could not

  879. go in because of unbelief. The author

  880. uses that to show that the way we enter

  881. into the final Sabbath rest of God is

  882. through Jesus Christ. It's through faith

  883. in him. And so therefore, in one sense,

  884. if you have trusted Jesus as your

  885. savior, then you have already entered

  886. into what is called Sabbath rest. It is

  887. a rest you have when works have ceased.

  888. >> You see that means that your salvation

  889. is not dependent on what you do, but

  890. it's dependent on what Christ has done

  891. already for you. He conquered sin when

  892. he died on the cross. He conquered death

  893. when he rose from the dead. And so

  894. therefore, we do not strive to be holy

  895. or to live righteously in order to

  896. obtain a greater blessing from God, a

  897. greater favor from God, a greater

  898. acceptance from God, or a greater rest

  899. from God. Because all of that has been

  900. secured through the finished work of

  901. Jesus Christ. The reason we live holy

  902. and blamelessly in this ungodly present

  903. world is not to be in God's favor or to

  904. have God's rest but because we are in

  905. God's favor and we do have God's rest.

  906. It should be the natural response of

  907. believers to enjoy God's rest in

  908. obedience to Jesus Christ.

  909. Why?

  910. Because Jesus reigns.

  911. Because Jesus reigns, you can rest.

  912. Well, then why do so many Christians

  913. struggle to be at rest? You ever been

  914. there before where you feel restless as

  915. a Christian?

  916. Where you you don't feel good in your

  917. conscience? you you you don't feel like

  918. you're really resting assured in your

  919. relationship with God. Well, I just

  920. wonder that perhaps it could be because

  921. spiritually speaking, we go to Disney,

  922. we call that rest.

  923. What do you mean by that? I mean this,

  924. some Christians turn to pornography and

  925. fornication and adultery and call that

  926. satisfaction

  927. because they pursue money endlessly,

  928. wearing themselves out with no

  929. relationship with God, never reading

  930. God's word, never spending time in

  931. prayer, missing worship all of the time,

  932. and call that pursuit of money. That's

  933. the fulfillment that I'm longing for.

  934. That's where I think I'll really find

  935. rest. Building that massive retirement

  936. portfolio so they can travel all around

  937. the world to the neglect of their

  938. relationship with God. And they think

  939. that is what will satisfy me. Some go to

  940. alcohol and say because it feels good to

  941. just have that buzz. Some will smoke

  942. weed and just say just to let the cares

  943. of life go and just to to just veg out

  944. for a little bit. Some will turn to the

  945. TV just constantly and to their screens

  946. all of the time thinking that that is

  947. what will provide them rest. And yet,

  948. you know what happens? Try to sit still

  949. for five minutes with nothing in your

  950. hands

  951. and you get restless. Why?

  952. We're going to things other than Jesus

  953. thinking they'll provide satisfaction.

  954. They'll provide fulfillment. They'll

  955. provide the rest that our weary souls

  956. are longing for. We have this tendency

  957. in our fallen fleshly nature to think

  958. that real rest is found somewhere

  959. outside of Christ's reign. When what the

  960. scripture says is that real rest is

  961. found under Christ's reign. When Christ

  962. reigns, you find rest.

  963. Can I ask you, does Christ reign over

  964. your life?

  965. Does he have dominion

  966. over your family, your home, your bank

  967. accounts?

  968. Does he have dominion over what you do

  969. with your time? Does he have dominion

  970. over your body? Does he get to tell you

  971. what you do with your life? Are you

  972. under his reign? I truly hope that you

  973. see that you can have rest, but it'll

  974. only be when Christ reigns.

  975. But this rest that we experience today

  976. is only partial, isn't it?

  977. Because just when you feel like you have

  978. rest,

  979. here comes another battle,

  980. another struggle with sin, another

  981. temptation,

  982. another another negative thought,

  983. another time of depression, another time

  984. of anxiety, another time of panic. And

  985. just when you feel like you should be

  986. settling in and should be having rest,

  987. you just continue to face conflict with

  988. this world of darkness. Listen, we have

  989. a measure of rest right now because

  990. Christ presently reigns. But we will

  991. rest fully when Christ returns.

  992. It's when he returns. See, Jesus can

  993. return at any moment. And when he does,

  994. he will conquer every evil king, every

  995. evil kingdom, and every evil soul with

  996. the word of his mouth. We won't have to

  997. worry about nukes when Christ returns.

  998. >> We won't have to worry about soldiers

  999. giving their lives on the battlefield.

1000. When Christ returns, that'll be done. We

1001. won't have to worry about terrorism,

1002. car bombs. We won't have to worry about

1003. the violence in our streets anymore

1004. because it will all be conquered. He

1005. will cast Satan and every false religion

1006. and every false prophet and every wicked

1007. soul into the lake of fire. And he will

1008. even cast death and the grave into the

1009. lake of fire. Death will be no more. No

  1010. more funerals.

1011. Praise God. No more miscarriages.

1012. No more losing and burying your children

1013. or your parents or your spouse. No more

1014. of that. Death will be finished. He will

1015. abolish sin, pain, and suffering

1016. forever. And he will create a new heaven

1017. and a new earth where Jesus reigns, God

  1018. abides, and you rest. That's what's

  1019. coming.

  1020. That's God's promise.

1021. His promise to Israel then still remains

  1022. for us today.

1023. You have a guaranteed rest under a

1024. guaranteed reign. And may those

1025. guarantees assure your soul as you face

  1026. the battles of today.

1027. You can look sin in the eye

1028. and say, "Christ has conquered you.

1029. You're powerless in my life.

  1030. You don't determine what I do today. I

1031. know that he reigns. I know the rest is

1032. coming. sin. You will not win this fight

1033. today because I am bowing my knees

1034. before the lion of the tribe of Judah.

  1035. Jesus is my king.

1036. When death comes, you can face it

1037. without fear, knowing just on the other

1038. side is rest and glory.

1039. When Satan opposes you, oppresses you,

1040. or haunts you with dark thoughts,

1041. or with bitter thoughts of your past

  1042. life,

1043. you can declare that sin has been

  1044. conquered by your king.

1045. If God doesn't hold it over your head,

1046. neither should you. It's finished in

  1047. Christ.

1048. Today, you may have seen this

1049. uh but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin

1050. Nau paraphrased from Will Durant's book,

  1051. The Lessons of History,

1052. and was acknowledging a somewhat what

1053. what we see as true in history. And this

1054. was his paraphrase. This is not the

1055. direct quote of the book, but he said

1056. this. History proves that unfortunately

1057. and unhappily, Jesus Christ has no

1058. advantage over Genghask Kong. Because if

1059. you are strong enough, ruthless enough,

1060. powerful enough, evil will overcome

  1061. good.

  1062. That's what history looks like, doesn't

  1063. it?

  1064. Evil reigns.

1065. David would ask, "Why the wicked prosper

1066. while I'm out here in this cave fending

  1067. for my life?"

1068. Sometimes it sure feels like evil

  1069. overcomes good,

1070. but that's not true. Because we know

1071. that in the end, we have a promise. evil

1072. will be destroyed. Righteousness will

1073. prevail and we will rest because Christ

  1074. will overcome evil.

1075. There's much advantage to Christ being

1076. your king. And so I just want to

1077. encourage you believers, fight today's

  1078. battles with faith,

1079. knowing that rest is guaranteed

1080. under the reign of Jesus Christ.

1081. Can I ask you finally tonight

1082. if you know for sure that you will enter

  1083. that rest?

1084. Because what Hebrews tells us is that

1085. the only way to enter that rest is

1086. through faith in Christ. It's not our

1087. good works. It's not our religious

1088. performance. It's not even our baptism

1089. or our church membership. It exclusively

1090. boils down to whether or not you have

1091. trusted in Christ alone for your eternal

1092. salvation. He alone paid the price. He

1093. said his final words on the cross, "It

  1094. is finished.

1095. Done. Paid in full. Nothing left to do

  1096. to trust him tonight.

  1097. Works will cease

1098. and you can rest in his salvation.

1099. And then you can fight those battles

1100. against sin, against those personal

1101. demons, so to speak, the conflict in

1102. your life with the assurance that you

1103. will rest and Christ will reign. So I

1104. encourage you to trust him today. Our

  1105. heavenly
