Hello, I'm Pastor Crayton, and thank you for tuning in to U Sun Churches Podcast.

We're a gospel centered church in Port Perry, Ontario, proclaiming the true and life-giving word of Jesus as we love and serve our neighbors.

May God bless you today through his life-giving word.

Well, good morning.

Brothers and sisters, welcome to New Song Church.

We're here proclaiming the true and life-giving word of Jesus as we love and serve our neighbors.

And this morning we are going to participate in the lessons and perils of our service.

This is a service we look forward to all year long.

And we get to carry that tradition forward this morning by listening to the good news we find in God's Word, that God loves the world and saves the world by reconciling us to himself through our Lord Jesus.

And we are going to respond in wonder and in adoration through the sacred music that we are going to take in today.

Our kids are going to be invited to participate in our new song Kids program for a portion of today's service.

Everything you need to worship with us this morning is going to be in your bulletin.

I invite you to worship with us as the people of God as we take in this wonderful story of God's love for us together.

So please hear this invitation.

In the name of God, who has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved son, we welcome you.

Grace to you and peace.

We are gathered together to proclaim and reclave in our hearts the good news of the coming of God's kingdom.

And so prepare ourselves to celebrate with confidence and joy the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We pray that we may respond in penitence and faith to the glory of his kingdom, its works of justice, and its promise of peace, its blessing and its hope.

May God of his grace and mercy grant to all his people a new trust in his good providence and a new obedience to his worship and praise.

Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever endeavor.

Amen.

And may the Lord, when he comes, find us watching and waiting now and at all times.

Amen.

Let us pray.

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us.

And as we are sorely hindered by our sins from running the race, that is set before us.

Let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be honor and glory now and forever.

Amen.

Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, be merciful and gentle, and to you be praise and glory forever.

Your light has shone in our darkened world through the childbearing of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Grant that we who have seen your glory may daily be renewed in your image and be and prepared like her for the coming of your son, who is the Lord and Savior of all.

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you shall eat of it, you shall surely die.

Then the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone.

I will make him a helper fit for him.

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept, he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.

And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.

Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.

She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.

Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

All the things that are that future years shall see evermore and evermore when the merchant grace conceived your grace and the pain of world speaking on first reveal his safer space and water for the heights of heaven, each of his praises, our millions both before him, and destroy our God and king.

But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die, for God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.

And she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the Lord walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, Where are you?

And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself.

And he said, Who told you that you were naked?

Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?

The man said, The woman whom you gave to me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.

And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this that you have done?

The woman said, The serpent deceived me and I ate.

The Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field.

On your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring.

He shall bruise your head, you shall bruise his heel.

And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

Then the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil.

Now lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat and live forever.

Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.

He drove out the man, and at the east of the Garden of Eden, he placed a cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amod, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jonathan, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, the kings of Judah.

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken, and children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.

The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib.

But Israel does not know.

My people do not understand.

Ah, a sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, the offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly.

For they have spoken, for they have forsaken the Lord.

They have despised the Holy One of Israel.

They are utterly estranged.

Wash yourselves.

Make yourselves clean.

Remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes.

Cease to do evil.

Learn to do good.

Seek justice.

Correct oppression.

Bring justice to the fatherless.

Come now.

Let us reason together, says the Lord.

Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.

Though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.

But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword.

For the mouth of the Lord has spoken to the children.

Let it be eating you.

I will not ask, and I will not, but the Lord does attack me.

And he said, Here then, O house of David, is it too little for you to weary men?

That you weary my God also?

Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a son.

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.

He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.

Lord, we thank you for our youngest brothers and sisters for the gift of your word that we get to hear upstairs and downstairs as well.

Bless our youngest brothers and sisters as they head to their program.

Lord, would they know your love and your kindness and your joy?

In Jesus' name we pray.

Amen.

The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.

And he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with his breath, and the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loin.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together, and a little child shall lead them.

The cow and the bear shall graze, and their young shall lie down together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

The nursing child shall play over the whole of the cobra, and the winged child shall put his hand on the adder's den.

They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain.

For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.

Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

A voice cries, In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.

Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low.

The uneven ground shall become level and the rough places a plain.

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

A voice says, Cry.

And I said, What shall I cry?

All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.

The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows on it, surely the people are grass.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

Go on up to a high mountain.

O Zion, herald of good news, lift up your voice with strength.

O Jerusalem, herald of good news, lift it up, fear not.

Say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God.

Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him.

Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.

He will tend his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with Yang.

And the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind, but be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create.

For behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness.

I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people.

No more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress.

No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days.

For the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.

They shall build houses and inhabit them, they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

They shall not build and another inhabit.

They shall not plant and another eat.

For like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity, for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord, and their descendants with them.

Before they call, I will answer.

While they are yet speaking, I will hear.

The wolf and the lamb shall graze together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food.

They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, says the Lord.

All praise, eternal Son to thee, whose advent sets thy people free, whom with the Father we adore, and Holy Spirit forevermore.

Amen.

When we first meet old man Marley, he's frightening, silent, mysterious, and menacing.

Marley has been constantly salting the walkway of his home with a snow shovel.

So naturally the neighborhood kids whisper to one another about the shovel slayer and often scream as Marley approaches them.

But Kevin McAllister, left home alone, you got that?

Left home alone, begins to see another side to Marley.

Brooding, perhaps, but lonely and misunderstood.

Years previous, he's exchanged regrettable words with his adult son in the heat of the moment.

Both declared that neither cared to see the other anymore.

But even after all these years, Kevin intuits that this isn't true for Marley.

Kevin asks him, why don't you call him?

Marley replies, I'm afraid if I call, he won't want to talk to me.

But Kevin presses.

Well, how do you know?

And Marley answers quietly, I don't know.

I'm just afraid he won't.

And when Kevin slyly asks if he's a little too old to be afraid, Marley replies, You can be a little old for a lot of things.

But you're never too old to be afraid.

Many of us know that fear, don't we?

Perhaps we in our experience of broken relationships, we know what it's like to long for reconciliation with the one that we love, the one that our heart longs for.

But the fear of rejection keeps us silent, keeps us alone, keeps us estranged.

That fear, that fear of rejection, that fear of loneliness is at the heart of what the Bible says is the human problem.

At the deepest level of this human problem, as the Bible understands it and understands it, is not ignorance, it's not a lack of morals, it's not a lack of effort, it's estrangement.

Estrangement from the God who made us, estrangement from the God who loves us, resulting in guilt and fear and separation.

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, and our first two readings this morning, tells us that God created human beings in his image for a loving relationship, for meaningful work, for covenant obedience, and for joyful communion with one another, with creation and with himself.

But as we saw, our first parents rebelled, choosing their own self-will and isolation over communion with God and alienation from God entered into the world.

Ever since, humanity has lived east of Eden, estranged from God, and estranged from one another.

And how does God respond?

Not with lightning, not with annihilation, but with mercy.

Even in judgment, God promises redemption, redemption through a promised child, the woman's offspring, through whom reconciliation would come.

See, at the heart of the Bible, there is not a story about humanity climbing its way toward God, but about God seeking after his estranged people, determined to reconcile them to himself because of his great love for them.

That theme comes into sharp focus in the prophet Isaiah.

The book of Isaiah records the ministry of Isaiah, son of Amos, who was proclaimed who proclaimed God's word primarily in Judah and Jerusalem in the 8th century BC.

Isaiah speaks honestly about sin and estrangement, yet he dares to proclaim hope.

Though your sins are like scarlet, he says, they shall be white as snow.

Through warnings of impending judgment and promises of salvation, Isaiah is announcing God's ultimate plan to reconcile his people with himself and ultimately reconcile the world through a coming messianic king.

But how will this reconciliation be secured?

Isaiah answers, Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.

See, a promised offspring, a child will secure the reconciliation of God's people.

From David's fallen line, God will raise a spirit-filled king.

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

The promise of this coming child, this Savior King, proves that God's disposition towards us estranged sinners is not glee at our downfall, is not good riddance, but compassion for our predicament.

Comfort, comfort, my people, says your God.

Isaiah looks forward and sees God's reconciliation reaches its fullness in a renewed and restored creation.

For behold, I create new heavens and new earth.

Be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create.

All that was lost by our first parents is restored through this coming Savior.

So we arrive at Christmas and ask the most important question we can.

Luke does not leave us guessing.

God fulfills these promises in Jesus Christ.

God enters history humbly, born of Mary, taking our human nature upon himself.

In Christ, God is truly God with us.

Mary leads our response to God's amazing grace and reconciliation with wonder and praise.

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior, for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

And so the Savior is born among the lowliest in Bethlehem, and angels announce the good news that we have longed to hear since we have been east of Eden.

Glory to God in the highest.

And on earth, peace among those with whom He is pleased.

Peace on earth.

Mercy mild.

God and sinners reconciled.

This is the heart of the Bible.

This is the heart of the Christian faith.

Humanity does not lift itself up to God.

God comes down to us.

In Jesus Christ, God lives the faithful life we failed to live, bears our guilt at the cross, conquers death by his resurrection, and reconciles estranged people like us to himself.

Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling.

At the end of Home Alone, Kevin looks through a window and sees old man Marley reunited with his son.

They embrace.

And Marley tearful waves to Kevin.

Because we're reminded that real reconciliation is possible.

What's more, the Bible tells us, it is possible with God.

Not because of what we have done for God, but because of what God has done for us.

When we were lost, God sought us.

When we were guilty, God forgave us.

When we were estranged, God came to us in Jesus Christ.

Will we receive his embrace?

So perhaps you're here today and you're in the Christmas spirit.

And all of this makes for a beautiful and heartwarming story, and perhaps you think it's even a useful story for some individuals or for society generally.

But for many reasons, you think it it cannot be a true story.

And it would be unreasonable to pretend that it is.

And if that's the case, I am glad you're here because we welcome those who wrestle and question.

For those courageous enough to do so, may I offer one thought.

What greater news could you and I receive than the news that God loves you, seeks after you, reconciles Himself to you, and offers hope for your future and mine for all eternity.

So even while doubts and unanswered questions understandably remain, if given the choice, would we not want what to believe that this story is true?

And yes, wanting it to be true does not make it so.

But if reasonable people, many of whom stake their lives on it, believe that the story is true, isn't the possibility that the greatest news we could ever hear might be true?

Reason enough to investigate it?

Let me invite you to investigate.

Perhaps in doing so you'll be surprised by the reasonableness of Christian conclusions.

Or perhaps you'll come away more confirmed in your original thinking.

Either way, you risk only deeper understanding.

This Christmas, this coming year, endeavor to investigate Christ.

Or perhaps you hear this as someone who's been a Christian for a long time.

You've heard God's love for sinners proclaimed many, many times, and you believe that God in Christ has reconciled the world to himself, yet one thought lingers.

God may love sinners, but does he love me?

He may have reconciled the world to himself, but is his heart truly moved towards me?

Today we hear the good news of Christmas announced by the hosts of heaven to the lowliest.

Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.

This news is for you, and the joy is for all, including you.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

And Jesus Christ, God has come to be God.

With God with you.

Saint Augustine was right to pray, Thou omnipotent good, thou carest for every one of us, as if thou didst care for him only.

And so for all, as if they were but one.

God has not overlooked you.

God has not abandoned you.

We need not fear his rejection.

He has not left us as estranged or distant or alone.

God loves you, comes to you, dies for you, rises for you, and will one day come again for you.

And in Christ you can live with him forever as being reconciled.

As surely as God is with us in the manger, we will be with God in eternity.

As the Bible holds him out to us, look to Christ.

Look to Christ who reconciles us and see the very heart of God on display.

Look to Christ and see God with us.

And the virgin's name was Mary.

And he came to her and said, Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you.

But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.

And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.

And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.

And Mary said to the angel, How will this be, since I am a virgin?

And the angel answered her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

And behold, your relative Elizabeth, in her old age, has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

For nothing will be impossible with God.

And Mary said, Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.

Let it be to me according to your word.

And the angel departed from her.

In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah.

And she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leapt in her womb.

And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

And she exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leapt for joy.

And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.

For he who has is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name, and his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm.

He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy.

As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his offspring forever.

And Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria, and all went to be registered, each to his own town.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.

And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, and this will be a sign for you, and you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.

And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.

And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child, and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.

But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart, and the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

What a good call for us aside is sending his own with very holy we should pray to God with our Christmas day in Bethlehem or Bonat.

There was a blessed shepherd street, the fox of life and sweet, just in the sports king.

Will you not?

The invitation this morning was uh to investigate, and uh there's a few uh opportunities that we have.

I well first I want to invite you to come and join us and worship again uh as we head into this Christmas season.

Uh first is uh we've got Christmas uh uh eve at 10 a.m.

We're having a family service for for all ages.

Uh so all ages are welcome.

We're gonna be having a a puppet show, uh nativity uh play as well as uh some treats and hot chocolate and all those uh goodies.

Uh and then we're gonna be having an a choral service that evening at 7 p.m.

So if you want to come and hear our wonderful choir again, I invite you back on Christmas Eve at seven o'clock.

We will also have a Christmas Day service at uh 10 a.m.

And that's a beautiful uh quiet service uh together.

So please uh please do plan to join us.

And if you're looking for an opportunity to investigate or uh uh crisis a little bit further in the new uh in the new year, uh we have an opportunity coming up called Christianity Overboard, which is a seven-week uh uh introduction to what Christians believe.

That is an opportunity to just ask questions, to explore, to investigate together in a very like relaxed environment.

We're going to be meeting together at that place on Queen Cafe in uh Wednesday evenings in February and in March.

Uh lattes are on us, and it's a great way to meet folks, ask questions together.
