  1. Let's take our Bibles and go to Numbers

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  2. chapter 21. Numbers 21.

  3. I'm going start off by acknowledging

  4. there is a lot here.

  5. And I I wish that we could go and we

  6. could have I guess divided it up more

  7. and um

  8. given more exhaustive attention to each

  9. and every detail, but I feel like the

  10. Lord would have us to to see the

  11. transitional aspect to chapter 21.

  12. Um, as we came to chapter 22, we saw

  13. Moses and Aaron in their own form of

  14. rebellion against the Lord, striking the

  15. rock instead of speaking to it. And then

  16. them being turned away from the promised

  17. land as well. Aaron and Miriam both die

  18. in chapter 20. They come to Eden, Edom,

  19. and seek passageway through their

  20. brothers, the descendants of Esau. And

  21. they are turned away back toward the Red

  22. Sea.

  23. And up to this point through Exodus and

  24. Leviticus and Numbers, we've seen the

  25. previous generation

  26. continuously complain and rebel and

  27. their unbelief and being turned away

  28. from the promised land when they were

  29. right there.

  30. And uh I mentioned last week that that

  31. chapter 20 starts a transition where

  32. it's going to tell us why the leadership

  33. of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam are not

  34. there as they are entering into the

  35. land. And now chapter 21, there's a

  36. drastic shift

  37. from rebellion and defeat and unbelief

  38. and all of those things to faith and

  39. victory and life and satisfaction

  40. and [snorts] conquest. Even by the end

  41. of this chapter, Israel taking their

  42. first possession. And I think that that

  43. the Lord inspired this to all be

  44. organized this way. Like I said, it

  45. would been easy to deal with each and

  46. every section, but I think there's a a

  47. specific movement God wants us to see in

  48. this text. And so, if you'll stand once

  49. you found your place there, we'll read

  50. Numbers 21 and we'll read the majority

  51. of the chapter. We'll jump around a

  52. little bit because there's a lot of

  53. names that are really hard to pronounce

  54. of cities and regions, and I'm sure

  55. it'll just inspire you majorly to hear

  56. those. So,

  57. let's just begin in Numbers 21. I want

  58. you to listen as we're as we're going

  59. through this. I want you to listen and

  60. pay attention to the differences

  61. throughout this chapter than what we

  62. have seen through the wilderness

  63. journey. So, let's look at Numbers 21:1.

    Numbers 21:1

  64. And when the king Aar the Canaanite,

  65. which dwelt in the south, heard tell

  66. that Israel came by the way of the

  67. spies, then he fought against Israel,

  68. and took some of them prisoners. And

  69. Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and

  70. said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this

  71. people into my hand, then I will utterly

  72. destroy their cities. And the Lord

  73. hearkened to the voice of Israel and

  74. delivered up the Canaanites and they

  75. utterly destroyed them in their cities.

  76. And he called the name of the place

  77. Horma.

  78. I'll mention this a little bit later,

  79. but Hora should stand out to you because

  80. 38 years ago when they when when they

  81. were turned away from the land because

  82. of their unbelief to go in, God said,

  83. "Go back into the wilderness and they

  84. said, "No, we will go up." And the

  85. Amalachites and the Canaanites fought

  86. against them and chased them to Horma.

  87. So Horma is a place of defeat. And yet

  88. now it turns to a place of victory. Look

  89. at verse four.

  90. Then this becomes a little more

  91. familiar. And they journeyed from Mount

  92. by the way of the Red Sea to

  93. compass the land of Edom. And the soul

  94. of the people was much discouraged

  95. because of the way. And the people spake

  96. against God and against Moses. Wherefore

  97. have you brought us up out of Egypt to

  98. die in the wilderness? For there is no

  99. bread, neither is there any water. And

  100. our soul loathe this light bread. And

  101. the Lord sent fiery serpents among the

  102. people, and they bit the people, and

  103. much people of Israel died. Now notice

  104. this. Therefore, the people came to

  105. Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we

  106. have spoken against the Lord and against

  107. thee. pray unto the Lord that he take

  108. away the serpents from us. And Moses

  109. prayed for the people. And the Lord said

  110. unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent,

  111. and set it up upon a pole, and it shall

  112. be, it shall come to pass that everyone

  113. that is bitten when he lookth upon it

  114. shall live. And Moses made a serpent of

  115. brass, and put it upon a pole. And it

  116. came to pass that if a serpent had

  117. bitten any man, when he beheld the

  118. serpent of brass, he lived. And now it

  119. moves to their journey south to the Red

  120. Sea. And then they'll go around Edom and

  121. head north. And what I want to point out

  122. uh to this to you from this is in verse

  123. 16.

  124. It says, "And from thence they went to

  125. beer, that is the well whereof the Lord

  126. spake unto Moses, gather the people

  127. together, and I will give them water."

  128. Then Israel sang this song, "Spring up,

  129. O well, sing ye unto it." The princes

  130. digged the well, and the nobles of the

  131. people digged it by the direction of the

  132. lawgiver with their staffs. And from the

  133. w wilderness they went to Mata. And so

  134. then it's going to chronicle their

  135. journey to the border between uh the

  136. Moabites and the Amorites.

  137. Now look at verse 21. And Israel sent

  138. messengers unto Sihon, king of the

  139. Amorites, saying, "Let me pass through

  140. thy land. We will not turn into the

  141. fields or into the vineyards. We will

  142. not drink of the waters of the well, but

  143. we will go along by the king's highway

  144. until we be past thy borders." And Sihon

  145. would not suffer Israel to pass through

  146. his border. But Sihon gathered all his

  147. people together, and went out against

  148. Israel unto the wilderness. And he came

  149. to Jahaz, and fought against Israel. And

  150. Israel smote him with the edge of the

  151. sword, and possessed his land from Arnon

  152. unto Jabbek, even unto the children of

  153. Ammon. For the border of the children of

  154. Ammon was strong. And Israel took all

  155. these cities and dwelt in all the cities

  156. of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all

  157. the villages thereof. For Heshbon was

  158. the city of Sihon, the king of the

  159. Amorites, who had fought against the

  160. former king of Moab, and taken all his

  161. land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

  162. And then it's going to give this

  163. expression of Proverbs that declares the

  164. triumphal conquering of Sihon over Moab.

  165. And then it issues a warning in verse

  166. 29. Woe to thee, Moab, you people of

  167. Kimosh. And the reason why is because

  168. the ones who had conquered, the

  169. Moabites, have now been conquered by

  170. Israel. It's saying, there is a strong

  171. army coming your way. Now look at verse

  172. 31.

  173. Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the

  174. Amorites, and Moses sent to spy out

  175. Jazar, and they took the villages

  176. thereof, and drove out the Amorites that

  177. were there. And they turned and went up

  178. by the way of Bashan. And Og, the king

  179. of Bashan, went out against them, he and

  180. all his people to the battle at Edrii.

  181. And the Lord said un Moses, "Fear him

  182. not, for I have delivered him into thy

  183. hand, and all his people unto the his

  184. land, and his land, and thou shalt do

  185. unto him as thou didest unto Sihon, king

  186. of the Amorites, which dwelleth

  187. Heshbon." So they smoked him and his

  188. sons and all his people until there was

  189. none left him alive and they possessed

  190. his land. And so what you see throughout

  191. this chapter is victory,

  192. rebellion remedied to life, water coming

  193. from a well and rejoicing that follows,

  194. and conquest and possession. A big

  195. difference from the rest of what we have

  196. seen. And so I want to speak to you

  197. tonight on this subject. Moving forward

  198. from rebellion to conquest. Moving

  199. forward from rebellion to conquest. May

  200. God bless his word. You can be seated.

  201. [clears throat]

  202. How do you move forward from failure?

  203. Watched some of the Olympics this week

  204. and there have been some crushing

  205. defeats. watched a couple hockey games

  206. yesterday that both went to overtime and

  207. Canada came out victorious and the US

  208. came out victorious and Sweden and uh

  209. Czecha both came out on the losing end

  210. and two teams were celebrating and two

  211. teams were defeated staring in

  212. disbelief. [snorts]

  213. US figure skater and gold medal favorite

  214. Amber Glenn was left in tears and

  215. devastation after nailing a triple axle

  216. followed by two other triples and then

  217. when she was supposed to do one final

  218. triple.

  219. She lost focus, opened up her arms, and

  220. only did a double and lost seven

  221. potential points, which pushed her from

  222. the gold medal running all the way down

  223. to 13th place. And when she finished her

  224. her performance, she was there on her

  225. knees, and you could just see the tears

  226. flowing from her eyes. There's a very

  227. similar outcome for gold medal favorite

  228. Ilia Malanin of the US as well. He's

  229. been nicknamed the quad god for nailing

  230. quadruple axles and being the first one

  231. in history to do so in competition. And

  232. he does multiples of them. He did six

  233. quadruples in one competition at one

  234. point. And so he came into this Olympics

  235. as a 21-year-old and the favorite to win

  236. the gold. And yet, as he finished his

  237. short program, he knelt there at center

  238. ice with his hands buried in his face

  239. after multiple falls. He said

  240. afterwards, "I just lost focus."

  241. And afterwards, both of them expressed

  242. the shock and disappointment as Ilia

  243. said, "I blew it." In his own words and

  244. Amber, you could hear her crying to her

  245. coach right afterwards, saying, "I had

  246. it." She was this close. She's the first

  247. uh female US skater to land a triple

  248. axle in the Olympics since uh 2018 I

  249. believe and before that it had been

  250. since the mid 2000s. And so there was

  251. something special about these two

  252. skaters that was going to bring the US

  253. back to Olympic prominence in figure

  254. skating. And yet both they both after

  255. all the training, after all the hard

  256. work, the years of competing and

  257. perfecting uh their work, they come to

  258. that moment and fall short. I can't

  259. imagine how you move forward from a

  260. failure and a disappointment like that.

  261. And that's really the question that

  262. we're left asking when we come to the

  263. end of Numbers 20. Because Israel has

  264. come so close to entering the promised

  265. land, not once but twice, only to be

  266. turned away because of rebellion and

  267. unbelief. [snorts] 38 years later,

  268. they're back at the same spot in Kadesh.

  269. And because of their own rebellion, even

  270. Moses and Aaron are turned away back

  271. toward the Red Sea. And now Israel is

  272. going in the opposite direction. And

  273. we're left wondering how do they move

  274. forward from yet another failure, a

  275. great failure.

  276. And we we ask will Israel ever respond

  277. right? Will they ever get to the

  278. promised land? Will they ever have

  279. victory?

  280. But as we come to chapter 21, we see the

  281. tide turn immediately as Israel gains

  282. victory over a Canaanite king in a place

  283. where they were once defeated by

  284. Canaanites.

  285. >> [snorts]

  286. >> Though Israel rebels again, they repent.

  287. They acknowledge their sin and God

  288. provides a remedy to give life to those

  289. who had been sentenced to death. They

  290. end up in the plains of Moab where they

  291. drink from a well and rejoice in it.

  292. Where they conquer two Amorite kings and

  293. take their lands and their homes as

  294. their possessions. Numbers 20 was

  295. characterized by death, rebellion,

  296. defeat, a and uh and and and uh thirst

  297. and and all of those things. While

  298. Numbers 21 is characterized by victory,

  299. life, satisfaction, and conquest. It's a

  300. contrast between two generations that

  301. shows us how this next generation is

  302. going to move forward from the time of

  303. rebellion to a time of conquest. There's

  304. a lot of land to be conquered by this

  305. generation.

  306. And here we begin to see how a

  307. rebellious people is going to move

  308. forward to conquer and lay hold of what

  309. God promised to give them. And the way

  310. that Israel moves forward is the same

  311. way that you and I must move forward in

  312. our lives. Because we're born rebels,

  313. sinners against God, defeated by sin,

  314. sentenced to death. We are spiritually

  315. hungry and thirsty and dry. And when you

  316. get saved, the tide begins to turn. But

  317. you quickly find that living the

  318. Christian life is not as easy as you

  319. once thought. That old ways die hard.

  320. >> [snorts]

  321. >> You still have lapses of faith, moments

  322. of sin, moments of rebellion, moments

  323. when you are seeking satisfaction from

  324. the empty wells of this world. There are

  325. times when these moments can lead us to

  326. failure and we wonder, how are we ever

  327. going to get there?

  328. You know, conquering sin

  329. feels a long way off for some.

  330. Being satisfied in life, in your

  331. relationship with God seems like a long

  332. ways away for you. Trusting him seems a

  333. long ways away. And so we ask, how do we

  334. move forward from our moments of

  335. failure? How do we move forward from

  336. rebellion to conquest?

  337. And the answer for us is unfolded in our

  338. text in these four different scenes.

  339. They all draw the same conclusion.

  340. In the first scene, the Lord gives

  341. Israel victory in the place of defeat.

  342. They're attacked. We read in chapter 21

  343. verse 1, they're attacked by a Canaanite

  344. king. And he takes some of the

  345. Israelites captive. And now it's at this

  346. point that we've come to expect Israel

  347. to grumble and to complain and to say,

  348. "Why have you let us out here to be

  349. conquered by our enemies?" It's when you

  350. see the strong army that just came and

  351. attacked them and took prisoners away

  352. and they were left defenseless. Or you

  353. would say, "We can't do it. They're too

  354. strong." And yet in this generation, we

  355. see a completely different response.

  356. Instead of speaking against the Lord,

  357. Israel speaks to the Lord. Look at verse

  358. two. And Israel vowed a vow unto the

  359. Lord and said, "If thou wilt indeed

  360. deliver this people into my hand, then I

  361. will utterly destroy their cities." So

  362. now they're speaking to the Lord. And

  363. this sounds like a test. You know, we we

  364. we try our best not to live this way and

  365. to say, "Well, God, if you'll do this in

  366. my life, then I'll do this uh for you."

  367. You know, sometimes we look down on

  368. that. But I want you to understand that

  369. what's going on here is a vow of faith.

  370. that what they are doing is they are

  371. taking action

  372. trusting God to do something for them.

  373. And in response to what God does for

  374. them, they want to do something for him.

  375. God, if you will deliver this people

  376. into our hands, then we will utterly

  377. destroy their cities. And this this

  378. phrase utterly destroy, we need to be

  379. familiar with it throughout the con

  380. conquest because of the fact that it

  381. means to devote to destruction is what

  382. it literally means. And what they are

  383. doing is they are dedicating the spoil.

  384. They are dedicating the land. They are

  385. dedicating the properties. All of that

  386. is being completely destroyed in

  387. dedication to the Lord. That's the idea

  388. of this phrase, utterly destroying them.

  389. And so God, if you will deliver them

  390. into our hands, everything belongs to

  391. you. That's what they're saying. It's a

  392. vow of faith. And notice what happens in

  393. verse three. And the Lord hearkened to

  394. the voice of Israel and delivered up the

  395. Canaanites. And they utterly destroyed

  396. them and their cities. And he called the

  397. name of the place Horma, a word that

  398. means devoted.

  399. And so that was the city that was given

  400. to God. God upheld his end. And now

  401. Israel upholds their end. They utterly

  402. destroy and devote the city completely

  403. to God. And I want to remind you again

  404. that Hora is the place where they were

  405. chased to after rebelling against the

  406. Lord and going up against the

  407. Amalachites and the Canaanites. And

  408. there were many people who died as they

  409. were chased to this place called Horma.

  410. This place of defeat has now become a

  411. place of victory after Israel looked to

  412. the Lord. They look to the Lord. That's

  413. what we see in this first scene.

  414. [snorts] Now, in this second scene,

  415. they revert to their old rebellious ways

  416. and God brings judgment. But what we see

  417. is that the Lord offers life from the

  418. sentence of death. And so in verse

  419. number four it says, "And they journeyed

  420. from the mount from Mount which

  421. was where Aaron died by the way of the

  422. Red Sea to combass the land of Edom.

  423. [snorts]

  424. And the soul of the people was much

  425. discouraged because of the way." This

  426. word discouraged, it's the idea that

  427. they were running short. They were

  428. growing impatient.

  429. You ever been tired of waiting on the

  430. Lord? I just want my job now. I just

  431. need some money now. I just want to get

  432. married now. And so there can be all of

  433. these ways that we're impatient and it

  434. feels like God I mean think about this

  435. for a second. They just defeated a

  436. Canaanite army in the southern border of

  437. the promised land. Everything is primed

  438. for them to go in and take the land. God

  439. has even shown that if they will trust

  440. in him and go and and and and go after

  441. the Canaanites that he's going to

  442. deliver them into their hands. So

  443. everything is primed for Israel to move

  444. forward. And yet they end up going

  445. backwards toward the Red Sea. And it's

  446. the route of having to go around Edom by

  447. way of the Red Sea and then all the way

  448. back up north. That is what discourages

  449. them. They have become impatient with

  450. God's plan. And anytime you become

  451. impatient with God's plan, if you're not

  452. careful, it can begin to wallow up into

  453. bitterness and it can lead you to say

  454. stupid things and to do stupid things,

  455. which is what Israel does in verse

  456. number five. And the people spake

  457. against God and against Moses. Wherefore

  458. have you brought us up out of Egypt to

  459. die in the wilderness? For there is no

  460. bread, neither is there any water. And

  461. our soul loatheth this light bread. That

  462. literally means our soul is detested

  463. by this worthless food.

  464. See, they are treating the Lord and his

  465. provision as worthless and contemptable.

  466. God responds in verse 6. And the Lord

  467. sent fiery serpents among the people and

  468. they bit the people and much people

  469. died.

  470. This part looks like it looks so

  471. familiar to the old generation and what

  472. they experienced and how they responded.

  473. But this time, Israel repents and the

  474. Lord offers life to those bitten. It

  475. says in verse number seven, "Therefore

  476. the people came to Moses and said, we

  477. have sinned, for we have spoken against

  478. the Lord and against thee. Pray unto the

  479. Lord and that he take away the serpents

  480. from us." And Moses prayed for the

  481. people. This word prayed, it means to

  482. advocate, to mediate, to to go between

  483. us and God. Moses, we need you to

  484. intercede on our behalf that God would

  485. take away the serpents. But notice, I

  486. want you to notice what they are doing.

  487. They are not coming against Moses as

  488. they recently have and said, "You have

  489. killed the people of the Lord." They're

  490. not doing that. They are recognizing

  491. their sin and they're acknowledging that

  492. we need Moses to go to the Lord on our

  493. behalf. We need to look to the Lord in

  494. this time of suffering, this time of

  495. consequence. And it says in verse number

  496. eight, "And the Lord said unto Moses,

  497. make thee a fiery serpent, and set it up

  498. on a pole, and it shall come to pass

  499. that everyone that is bitten when he

  500. lookth upon it shall live." And Moses

  501. made a serpent of brass and put it on a

  502. pole. And it came to pass that if the

  503. serpent had bitten any man when he

  504. beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

  505. This is a very unusual remedy. No

  506. sacrifice is mentioned. No means of

  507. atonement is mentioned. And because the

  508. Lord, no incense is offered. remember

  509. when the fire of the Lord came out.

  510. Aaron went out into the middle of them

  511. and he held up a censor with incense and

  512. that made atonement for the people and

  513. then the plague stopped. But we don't

  514. see any of that. Why is that? I think

  515. God is wanting to reveal and teach his

  516. people something about himself.

  517. I want you to think for a second this

  518. pole with a brass serpent on it. He

  519. tells him, "If you've been bitten by the

  520. snake, look up at this snake and you

  521. will live." Now, who sent the fiery

  522. serpents?

  523. The Lord did. When they are looking at

  524. this serpent of brass,

  525. it would remind them of the Lord's

  526. judgment.

  527. And I think what God is getting across

  528. to Israel here is this. It's a great

  529. paradoxical truth that the one who has

  530. sentenced you to death is the same one

  531. who can give you life.

  532. And and and so when God brings his

  533. judgment, his discipline, and his

  534. chastisement into your life, the

  535. tendency is to turn and run, to turn and

  536. hide. But God is communicating to his

  537. people that when you are under the

  538. discipline because of your sin, that you

  539. need not look away from the one

  540. disciplining you, but you need to look

  541. to the one who is disciplining you

  542. because he is the one who can give you

  543. life even when you are under the

  544. sentence of death.

  545. God is calling his people to look to him

  546. to have life from death. [snorts] That's

  547. the third scene.

  548. Now it moves to a fourth scene. So the

  549. Lord gave Israel victory when they look

  550. to him. He now gives them life when they

  551. look to him. And as we come to this

  552. third scene, we find that Israel

  553. rejoices when the Lord gives water to

  554. them.

  555. This is a very interesting scene. What

  556. happens in is in verse 10, it begins to

  557. tell you about their journey uh going to

  558. north now. So they're they've been at

  559. the Red Sea. Now they're heading back

  560. north toward the promised land and they

  561. come to the river Arnon which is serves

  562. as a border between the Moabites and the

  563. Ammonites or the Amorites. and they come

  564. to this border and they're still in this

  565. dry and and and barren desert. And they

  566. come to a place in verse 16 that is

  567. called beer. This word beer, it's not

  568. like Budweiser. It's a Hebrew word that

  569. means a well, a well of water. And so

  570. why is it called the well? And it says

  571. in verse 16, that is the well whereof

  572. the Lord spake unto Moses, gather the

  573. people together, and I will give them

  574. water. Notice here that they need water.

  575. But there's no rebellion.

  576. There's no uprising.

  577. There's no fear. There's no grumbling.

  578. There's no complaining. The Lord simply

  579. comes. And there's no rock, by the way.

  580. There's there's no water in sight for

  581. them at this point. And yet the Lord

  582. says, "I will give them water." And

  583. evidently God told them that he wanted

  584. the princes to dig. Just I mean just

  585. imagine it. This desert flat land

  586. there's no water inside. You got all of

  587. these people and the Lord says tell the

  588. princes to start digging.

  589. And so they do start digging with their

  590. staffs. Now a staff is not a great

  591. digging tool in a hard clay dry desert.

  592. But they start digging. I imagine this

  593. took a lot of work and I imagine that

  594. there was a lot of man, I don't know

  595. about this, but you got 12 princes and

  596. they're all digging at this and Moses is

  597. digging at this and and all of a sudden

  598. as they as they hit something, water

  599. starts to gush out and it springs forth

  600. and it's in abundance enough to be able

  601. to to water the entire uh nation of

  602. Israel and all of their animals and all

  603. of that. And look at what happens in

  604. verse 17. Then Israel sang this song.

  605. Spring up, O well, sing ye unto it. The

  606. princes digged the well. The nobles of

  607. the people digged it by the direction of

  608. the lawgiver with their staffs.

  609. And so here's here's the point. I

  610. believe the people are thirsty.

  611. God provides water when they trust him

  612. in a dry and desert place to just start

  613. digging and they strike proverbial gold

  614. and the water starts coming out and and

  615. oh this is huge. For the first time

  616. since they left Egypt to this day 40

  617. years the people rejoice in the

  618. provision of God. That was astounding to

  619. me that going through this they've not

  620. the water came out of the rock. You

  621. don't see any rejoicing. The mana came

  622. from heaven. You don't see any rejoicing

  623. of praise to God. You don't see any

  624. songs written there. That Miriam wrote a

  625. song in the song of Moses after they

  626. crossed the Red Sea. But when it comes

  627. to the the daily provision of God, you

  628. never see them rejoicing until this

  629. moment. It signifies a great shift in

  630. these people. [snorts] God says dig.

  631. They start digging. They obey the Lord.

  632. Water comes up. They rejoice in God's

  633. provision. He satisfies their thirst.

  634. And [snorts] so now you've seen that

  635. Israel's eyes once again are on the

  636. Lord. They continue to look to him for

  637. victory, for life, and now for

  638. sustenance. And then we come to this

  639. fourth scene where the Lord gives Israel

  640. victory in their first conquest.

  641. It begins to track their journey further

  642. to the north to where they come to the

  643. the border of of Sihon, an Amorite king.

  644. And and the Amorites here are

  645. represented by two city kings. Sihon,

  646. the king of Heshbon, and then Og, the

  647. king of of Bashan. And I want to take

  648. some time to place this in the overall

  649. narrative. In Genesis 15, the Lord told

  650. uh Abraham that his descendants would be

  651. would live in another nation and serve

  652. them and after 400 years he would bring

  653. them out. God told Abraham about the

  654. Egyptian bondage. He told them about

  655. that and he he gave a reason in Genesis

  656. 15 and that was that the iniquity of the

  657. Amorites was not yet full. that their

  658. wickedness and their evil had not yet

  659. reached a point where God's mercy could

  660. not uh could not violate his justice and

  661. therefore he must act. It's important

  662. for us when it comes to this conquest to

  663. keep in mind that the Canaanites and all

  664. those other itites and the Amorites were

  665. so wicked God was raising up Israel to

  666. displace them and destroy them because

  667. of their sin. Evidently, after 470

  668. years, the Amorites have reached that

  669. point and the Lord brings Israel to

  670. their borders. And I want you to notice

  671. the parallelism between Sihon and Edom.

  672. In chapter 20, Moses seeks passageway

  673. through Edom and they refused them and

  674. God told them not to meddle with the

  675. and because they are their

  676. brothers and so he sent them back by the

  677. way of the Red Sea. But what we notice

  678. here in verse 21, it says, "And Israel

  679. sent messengers into Sihon, king of the

  680. Amorites, saying, Let me pass through

  681. thy land. We will not turn into the

  682. fields or into the vineyards. We will

  683. not drink of the waters of the well, but

  684. we will go along by the king's highway

  685. until we be past thy borders." And Sihon

  686. would not suffer Israel to pass through

  687. his border. But Sihon gathered all his

  688. people together and went out against

  689. Israel into the wilderness. And he came

  690. to Jahaz and fought against Israel. And

  691. Israel smote him with the edge of the

  692. sword and possessed his land from Arnon

  693. unto Jabbok, even unto the children of

  694. Ammon. For the border of the children of

  695. Ammon was strong. It says in verse 25,

  696. "And Israel took all these cities, and

  697. Israel dwelt in the all the cities of

  698. the Amorites in Heshbon and in the

  699. villages thereof." Let me draw your

  700. attention to what this is. communicating

  701. God gives Israel a significant victory

  702. over a powerful king and for the first

  703. time they are inhabiting fields that

  704. they had not sown, cities they had not

  705. built and are dwelling in houses they

  706. had not built. That was the promise of

  707. God that he was going to bring them into

  708. a land and give them fields they had not

  709. plowed nor swn and he was going to give

  710. them cities and homes they had not

  711. built. God is fulfilling his promise to

  712. this generation. And this victory over

  713. Sihon is significant for the rest of

  714. Israel's conquest.

  715. I mentioned if you look at verse 26 it

  716. says for Heshbon was the city of Sihon

  717. the king of the Amorites who had fought

  718. against the former king of Moab and had

  719. taken all his land out of his hand even

  720. unto Aron. So Sihon proved to be more

  721. powerful than the king of Moab. And he

  722. says in verse 27 wherefore they that

  723. speak in proverbs say come into Heshbon

  724. let the city of Sihon be built and

  725. prepared. But there's a fire gone out of

  726. Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon.

  727. It hath consumed R of Moab, and the

  728. lords of the high places of Arnan. And

  729. so it it's this is a proverb that

  730. communicated the triumphant victory of

  731. Sihon over R, the king of Moab. But now

  732. it says in verse 29, woe unto thee,

  733. Moab, thou art undone, oh people of

  734. Kimosh. Kimosh was the god of Moab that

  735. they offered child sacrifices to. Very

  736. lewd wickedness there. But it says, "He

  737. hath given his sons that escaped and his

  738. daughters into captivity into the hand

  739. of Sihon, king of the Amorites." So Sion

  740. has taken capture the children of Moab.

  741. But now verse 30 says, "We have shot at

  742. them. Heshbon has perished even into

  743. Dibbon. He have laid them waste even

  744. unto Nafa now which reacheth unto

  745. Mediva. This all sounds really weird. It

  746. sounds strange. It sounds complicated to

  747. us. But basically this is a song that

  748. Israel took from the people of Sihon and

  749. employed for themselves to say, "Watch

  750. out Moab. Sihon conquered you and we

  751. conquered them." It's instilled them

  752. with faith. And and you know what

  753. happens in chapter 22? Bailo, the king

  754. of Moab, is terrified of Israel and he

  755. hires Balam to curse Israel. But God

  756. won't let him because God is on their

  757. side. That's what all this is building

  758. toward. And then you go on to verse 31

  759. and it says, "Thus Israel dwelt in the

  760. land of the Amorites and Moses sent out

  761. uh sent to spy out Jeser and they took

  762. the villages thereof and drove out the

  763. Amorites that were there. And so there's

  764. a complete conquering of the Amorites

  765. going on here. And it says in verse 33,

  766. "And they turned and went up by the way

  767. of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan,

  768. went out against them, and he and all

  769. his people to battle at Edrad." So now

  770. another war has come. And you almost get

  771. the sense that Israel is wondering,

  772. "How long is this going to last?"

  773. Because in verse 34 it says, "And the

  774. Lord said unto Moses,"Fear him not, for

  775. I have delivered him into thy hand and

  776. all his people and his land, and thou

  777. shalt do unto him as thou didst unto

  778. Sihon, king of the Amorites, which dwelt

  779. at Heshbon." So they smote him and his

  780. sons and all his people until there was

  781. none left him alive. And they possessed

  782. his land. Notice that they [snorts]

  783. possessed his land.

  784. This land

  785. of Sihon and of Og and of the Amorites

  786. will become the first tribal allotment

  787. to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half

  788. the tribe of Manasseh.

  789. God is moving his people forward from

  790. rebellion

  791. toward

  792. conquest. They're not there yet. They'll

  793. not be perfect from this moment on.

  794. We're going to see that. But God is

  795. moving this nation forward. And he is

  796. working along the way to deliver their

  797. enemies into their hands, to bring them

  798. to repentance, to restore them to life,

  799. to provide them water and sustenance,

  800. and to give them land. That is what God

  801. is doing here in Numbers chapter 21. And

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  802. what it communicates to us is this

  803. simple truth that Israel is going to

  804. move forward from rebellion toward

  805. conquest by looking in faith to the Lord

  806. their God.

  807. The way forward from rebellion to

  808. conquest is to live by faith.

  809. They have looked to the Lord for victory

  810. over the Canaanites.

  811. They had to look to the Lord to receive

  812. life from the sentence of death. They

  813. had to rejoice and look to the Lord for

  814. water from this well. And they had to

  815. look to the Lord to find land and

  816. possession over the Amorites.

  817. They're looking to the Lord. And the

  818. road that Israel travels is one that all

  819. believers must travel if we are to move

  820. from rebellion toward conquest.

  821. Because there is one to whom we must

  822. look if we are to move forward. There is

  823. one who can bring us from defeat to

  824. victory. There is one who can bring us

  825. from death to life. There is one who can

  826. bring us from thirst to satisfaction.

  827. There is one who can bring us from

  828. rebellion to conquest and that is the

  829. Lord Jesus Christ. See [snorts] Jesus is

  830. the one who brings us first from death

  831. to victory. Because just as Israel was

  832. defeated at Horma because of rebellion,

  833. our rebellion and sin against God leaves

  834. us defeated. It leaves us retreating

  835. with our tails tucked between our legs

  836. and it's like sin dominates and rules

  837. over our lives. But listen, when Jesus

  838. died on the cross for your sin and you

  839. trusted in him, he rendered sin a

  840. powerless entity in your life to where

  841. it should not have dominion over you.

  842. That is why Paul said in Romans chapter

  843. 6:12, "Let not therefore sin reign in

  844. your mortal body that you should obey it

  845. in the lusts thereof." He goes on to say

  846. that sin shall not have dominion over

  847. you. And so if you are ever defeated by

  848. sin, it's only because you have allowed

  849. yourself to be. He tells believers in

  850. Romans 6, don't let sin reign. You know

  851. what that means? Sin only has power to

  852. reign if you give it power to reign.

  853. Why? Because Jesus conquered it. Jesus

  854. brings us from defeat to victory. But

  855. then Jesus also brings us from death

  856. into unto life. [snorts]

  857. Because when Jesus spoke to Nicodemus in

  858. John chapter 3, he said these words unto

    John 3 chapter mention

  859. him. And as Moses lifted up the serpent

  860. in the wilderness, even so must the son

  861. of man be lifted up that whosoever

  862. believeth on him should not perish but

  863. have eternal life. Jesus says, "Hey,

  864. this is the exact picture of my

  865. crucifixion."

  866. The the the Lord God issued a sentence

  867. of death upon all humanity because of

  868. their sin. And yet the same Lord God

  869. sent his son to be lifted up on a cross

  870. to pay the penalty for sin so that all

  871. who would look to him in faith would be

  872. forgiven of their sin and would not

  873. perish but would have everlasting life.

  874. Jesus brings us from death to life

  875. through his own death on the cross for

  876. us. Just as those who were snake bitten

  877. carried a death sentence, you and I who

  878. were snake bitten by sin carry a death

  879. sentence as well. But the God who

  880. sentenced us to death has provided a

  881. means of life if we would but look to

  882. him is Jesus.

  883. [snorts]

  884. So Jesus brings you from defeat to death

  885. and he brings you or from defeat to

  886. victory and he brings you from death to

  887. life. But Jesus also brings you from

  888. thirst to satisfaction.

  889. Because in John chapter 4, he met a

    John 4 chapter mention

  890. woman at a well of water. And he said to

  891. her, "Whosoever drinkketh of this water

  892. shall thirst again. But whosoever

  893. drinkketh of the water that I shall give

  894. him shall never thirst, but the water

  895. that I shall give him shall be in him a

  896. well of water, springing up into

  897. everlasting

  898. life. Spring ye up, oh well. Sing unto

  899. it. The Lord quenches our thirst.

  900. Listen, friends, this world will always

  901. leave you unsatisfied

  902. and longing for more. Porn will always

  903. leave you longing for more. An affair

  904. will always leave you longing for more.

  905. Alcohol will always leave you longing

  906. for more. Drugs will always leave you

  907. longing for more. Do I need to go on?

  908. Every single vice that this world has to

  909. throw at you that says this will quench,

  910. this will satisfy, it never can, but

  911. there is one who can. And when you drink

  912. of his water, it springs up into you as

  913. a well unto everlasting life. You never

  914. thirst again. When you are looking to

  915. Christ in faith, he provides defeat from

  916. victory. He brings life from death. He

  917. brings satisfaction from thirst. But

  918. finally, Jesus is the one who brings us

  919. from rebellion to conquest. It's Christ.

  920. Listen for a moment. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  921. chapter 2 verse14

  922. Paul says now thanks be to God which

  923. always caus us to triumph in Christ.

  924. Romans 8:37 tells us that Christ enabled

    Romans 8:37

  925. us to conquer suffering and persecution

  926. and hardship that we are more than

  927. conquerors through him who loved us. 1

    1 John 5:4

  928. John 5:4 and 5 tells us that Christ

  929. enabled us to overcome this world's

  930. system and all of its pressures that was

  931. through Christ. He says, "Faith is the

  932. victory that overcomes the world." 1

    1 Corinthians 15:57

  933. Corinthians 15:57 uh tells us that

  934. Christ enables us and gives us victory

  935. over death, hell, and the grave. He

  936. says, "Thanks be to God which giveth us

  937. the victory through our Lord Jesus

  938. Christ." Colossians 2:es 13 and 14 tells

  939. us that in Christ we conquer sin and its

  940. consequences and its condemnation as

  941. well as Satan and his demons because

  942. Christ has triumphed over them through

  943. the cross. Revelation is a book devoted

  944. to showing how believers and churches

  945. overcome in Christ. Revelation [snorts]

  946. 12, believers overcame the great red

  947. dragon by the blood of the lamb. In

  948. Revelation 17, the lamb overcomes kings

  949. and those who are with him are called

  950. and chosen and faithful, full of faith.

  951. That if your faith is in Jesus Christ,

  952. there is no king like Sihon. There's no

  953. king like Og who can stand against you.

  954. In Revelation 21:7, it says that he that

    Revelation 21:7

  955. overcomemeth shall inherit all things in

  956. his kingdom. The way we overcome

  957. rebellion, the way that we overcome sin,

  958. the way that we overcome death, the way

  959. that we overcome hell, the way that we

  960. overcome this evil world's system is

  961. always through the conquering lamb and

  962. king Jesus Christ.

  963. While your life without Christ was

  964. characterized by rebellion, defeat,

  965. thirst, and death, when you are with

  966. Christ, it is characterized by victory,

  967. satisfaction, life, and conquest. And

  968. it's not because of you, but because the

  969. one that you look to. Believers move

  970. forward from rebellion to conquest by

  971. looking in faith to Christ. So, what

  972. that means for you is that you ought to

  973. look to him when you're facing battles

  974. with sin.

  975. When when the devil is fighting you and

  976. tempting you, the way you battle is not

  977. in the strength of your own flesh. It is

  978. by getting on your knees and looking to

  979. the cross and looking to the Christ who

  980. hung upon it for the strength and the

  981. faith and the courage to defeat sin. You

  982. must look to him. Look to him when you

  983. need forgiveness. when you've already

  984. failed to come like Israel says, "I have

  985. sinned. I've sinned, Lord Jesus. Pray to

  986. the Lord for me. Intercede for me.

  987. Mediate for me. Advocate for me as the

  988. greater Moses that I may be forgiven."

  989. When you need revival, renewal, and

  990. refreshment. When you're hungry,

  991. thirsty, and dry spiritually, look to

  992. him. The well of life is there on your

  993. knees when you pour out your soul into

  994. Jesus.

  995. Acknowledge before him, Lord, it's been

  996. a long time since my heart and my soul

  997. has been moved by your grace. This

  998. world, I'm like a I'm like a sponge. I I

  999. come to church and and you fill me up.

1000. And I go out into this world and it

1001. squeezes you out of me. I'm thirsty.

1002. I need you to fill me. You look to him.

1003. You look to him. When this world's

1004. system is bearing down on you and Satan

1005. is fighting you hard and kings and

1006. governments and pandemics and death and

  1007. disease and everything that's

1008. representative of the sincursed world

1009. when it is waging war against your soul.

1010. You just need to turn to your conquering

1011. king because there's no battle he can't

1012. win. There's no king he can't conquer.

1013. look to him because Christ brings us

1014. from rebellion to conquest. We must look

  1015. to him in faith.

1016. [snorts] I don't know how Olympians move

1017. forward from a devastating failure.

1018. But I know how we do and that is on our

  1019. knees

1020. gazing upon the one who was lifted up

  1021. for our salvation.

  1022. trusting in him.

1023. The one who gave his life on the cross

1024. to free you from sin to quench your

1025. thirst, to give you life and to give you

1026. victory. That is the one that we look

1027. to. And so to move forward from

1028. rebellion all the way to conquest, we

1029. too must live by faith. Must live by

1030. faith. Father, we come to you tonight

1031. recognizing you are a trustworthy

  1032. God.

1033. Even when we sin and we're under your

  1034. discipline,

1035. you call us to look to you.

1036. You are the source of life,

1037. the source of victory, the source of

  1038. satisfaction,

1039. the source of our [music] conquest.

1040. I pray that you would help us to take

  1041. your word

1042. to bring it home to our lives

1043. to lift up our eyes [music]

1044. and look to our savior in Jesus name.

  1045. Amen.
