  1. Let's go in our Bibles to Numbers

    Numbers 20 chapter mention

  2. chapter 20.

  3. Numbers chapter 20.

    Numbers 20 chapter mention

  4. And once you found your place in Numbers

  5. 20, you can stand and we'll read our

  6. text together.

  7. We're going to cover the whole chapter,

  8. but for our reading, we're just going to

  9. read the the first 13 verses. That's

  10. really where the focus of our message

  11. will be um tonight. And uh the really

  12. verses 14- 29 are the fallout of verses

  13. 1 through13. And so that's really where

  14. we want to focus our time. This leaps us

  15. forward in time to the end of the

  16. wilderness journey. So 38 years forward

  17. and understand the 40 years. It includes

  18. the one year at Sinai and it includes

  19. the one year that that took them to get

  20. from they they left during the second

  21. year. And so there's a little bit of

  22. wiggle room there. But I think God

  23. counts the the first uh couple of years

  24. as time served for that generation

  25. because uh we we know from Numbers 33

  26. that we come to the the death of Aaron

  27. at the end of this chapter. And uh that

  28. takes place uh in the 40th year is what

  29. it says. And so uh we're we've advanced

  30. forward now uh 38 years from our last

  31. text in chapter 17, 18, and 19. And uh

  32. this is really a pivotal time in the

  33. book of numbers because it marks the

  34. transition from the older generation to

  35. the next generation. And we're going to

  36. see some leaders passing off the scenes.

  37. Uh and then we're going to see some

  38. further accounts where the rest of that

  39. unbelieving generation is dying off. And

  40. then when you get to Numbers 26, you

  41. have the new census and that brings in

  42. the new generation. And there's a final

  43. preparation at the end of Numbers and

  44. then into Deuteronomy as well for that

  45. final generation before they uh the new

  46. generation before they head into the

  47. promised land in the book of Joshua. And

  48. so that's where our text is is sat here

  49. between these two generations. And so

  50. let's begin reading in chapter 20 verse

  51. one.

  52. Then came the children of Israel, even

  53. the whole congregation into the desert

  54. of Zen in the first month. And the

  55. people abodeed in Kadesh, and Miriam

  56. died there, and was buried there. And

  57. there was no water for the congregation.

  58. And they gathered themselves together

  59. against Moses and against Aaron. And the

  60. people choed with Moses and spake,

  61. saying, "Would God that we had died when

  62. our brethren died before the Lord?" Now,

  63. let me just mention this while we're

  64. here. It refers to that generation as

  65. their brethren, not their fathers. So

  66. that tells us there's still a remnant of

  67. the old generation that is still leading

  68. the chiding and the strife against Moses

  69. and Aaron. And so that clues you into

  70. the the main the main drivers of this

  71. issue are from that old rebellious

  72. generation still. And so they say in

  73. verse number four, "And why have ye

  74. brought up the congregation of the Lord

  75. into this wilderness that we and our

  76. cattle should die there? And wherefore

  77. have you made us to come up out of Egypt

  78. to bring us unto this evil place? It is

  79. no place of seed, or of figs, or of

  80. vines, or of pomegranates, neither is

  81. there any water to drink." And Moses and

  82. Aaron went from the presence of the

  83. assembly unto the door of the tabernacle

  84. of the congregation, and they fell upon

  85. their faces. And the glory of the Lord

  86. appeared unto them. And the Lord spake

  87. unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and

  88. gather thou the assembly together, thou

  89. and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto

  90. the rock before their eyes, and it shall

  91. give forth his water, and thou shalt

  92. bring forth to them water out of the

  93. rock. So thou shalt give the

  94. congregation and their beasts to drink.

  95. And Moses took the rod from before the

  96. Lord as he commanded him. And Moses and

  97. Aaron gathered the congregation together

  98. before the rock, and he said unto them,

  99. "Hear now, ye rebels, must we fetch you

  100. water out of this rock." And Moses

  101. lifted up his hand, and with his rod he

  102. smoked the rock twice, and the water

  103. came out abundantly, and the

  104. congregation drank, and their beasts

  105. also. And the Lord spake unto Moses and

  106. Aaron, because ye believed me not to

  107. sanctify me in the eyes of the children

  108. of Israel. Therefore, ye shall not bring

  109. this congregation into the land which I

  110. have given them. This is the water of

  111. Meabbah because the children of Israel

  112. strove with the Lord and he was

  113. sanctified in them. Now verses 14

  114. through 21 are going to detail the

  115. refusal of Edom for Israel to pass

  116. through their land over to the plains of

  117. Moab. It's going to force them backwards

  118. to the Red Sea and all the way around

  119. Edom before they can come to the plains

  120. of Moab near Jericho. And then in verses

  121. 22 through verse 29, it records the

  122. death of Aaron, signifying that God

  123. is going to judge them when they don't

  124. believe and obey him. And so I want to

  125. speak on this subject tonight, the

  126. tragic message of unbelief. The tragic

  127. message of unbelief. May God bless his

  128. word. You can be seated and we'll get

  129. into our passage.

  130. We're all familiar with the phrase

  131. actions speak louder than words, right?

  132. You can tell your wife that you love her

  133. all you want, but there's something

  134. about getting her a bouquet of flowers

  135. or a box of chocolates that just makes

  136. those words go further. You know, your

  137. actions speak louder than words. You can

  138. tell your kids that you love them. But

  139. when you take your son on a camping trip

  140. and you have some man time, that action

  141. is going to demonstrate that love in

  142. greater ways. You might say, "I love my

  143. church." But when you're there every

  144. service, when you're serving faithfully

  145. and regularly in ministry, when you're

  146. checking in on people and praying for

  147. them, when you're giving to meet their

  148. needs, then your actions really tell us

  149. what you think and how you feel about

  150. your church family. See, our actions

  151. send a message to other people. I wonder

  152. what message unbelief

  153. sends to others.

  154. What message do we send our family when

  155. we panic over our finances?

  156. What message do we send our co-workers

  157. when we're constantly complaining about

  158. how bad we have it? What message do we

  159. send our church when we constantly harp

  160. on how expensive it is in our area, how

  161. impossible it is to get a building or to

  162. become self-supporting? You know what?

  163. What message do we send with that

  164. unbelief?

  165. What message do you send when you give

  166. up on your marriage or when you've lost

  167. a family member? Or when you see a

  168. particular region or country or state as

  169. closed off for the gospel? Or what if

  170. you give up on a lost family member?

  171. See, unbelief

  172. sends a tragic message about God to

  173. others. And I think that explains why

  174. God takes unbelief seriously

  175. as seriously as he takes it here in

  176. Numbers 20.

  177. Because when Israel complained about

  178. having no water, the Lord instructs

  179. Moses and Aaron to speak to the rock.

  180. and he promised them that it would give

  181. forth its water. But in frustration,

  182. Moses takes his rod and he strikes the

  183. rock twice. And when God rebukes Moses

  184. and Aaron, he first and foremost

  185. addresses the fact that they believed

  186. him not.

  187. That the real problem here was their

  188. unbelief. And by their unbelief, they

  189. have now categorized themselves with the

  190. unbelieving generation that was turned

  191. away from the promised land. And it's

  192. only natural that they would face the

  193. same consequences.

  194. And they do. Moses tries to gain entry

  195. near Jordan through Edom and is turned

  196. away.

  197. And Aaron is brought into Mount

  198. and there he dies.

  199. And what it's supposed to show us is

  200. this. God takes unbelief

  201. seriously

  202. and so should we.

  203. Why does God take it so seriously?

  204. What is the tragic message that is sent

  205. to others by our unbelief? That's what

  206. we want to see together in our text

  207. tonight.

  208. We find as we come to chapter 20 that

  209. Israel's faith is waning in the

  210. wilderness. That Israel is back at

  211. Kadesh after 38 years of wandering in

  212. the wilderness. The last time they were

  213. here at Kadesh was when Moses sent the

  214. 12 spies in to spy out the land. 10 of

  215. them came back and they said, "Well, the

  216. land is really good, but the giants are

  217. too big and the walls are too high and

  218. the armies are too strong. we cannot go

  219. up and take the land. Because of their

  220. unbelief, they were turned back to the

  221. way of the Red Sea and wandered in the

  222. wilderness for 40 years until everyone

  223. 20 years and older died except for

  224. Joshua and Caleb. But what about Moses

  225. and Aaron and Miriam? They're the

  226. national leaders of the nation of Israel

  227. and nothing has been said yet about

  228. whether or not they will go in with the

  229. people. Why? Because they were 20 years

  230. old and up, right? Well, as as Israel

  231. comes to this point in time, they would

  232. think surely Miriam and Moses and Aaron

  233. are going in with us. And yet what we

  234. find in verse number one is that while

  235. they're in Kadesh this time Miriam dies

  236. there and is buried there. This gray

  237. though she had her own issues of

  238. rebellion at times she was a prophetus

  239. is what the Bible says. She was a

  240. songwriter and and functioned in the

  241. praise of Israel and wrote that great

  242. song following the parting of the Red

  243. Sea and victories that they experienced.

  244. She was a leader of their nation and she

  245. has died. But what about Moses and Aaron

  246. and that's really what this chapter is

  247. intended to address.

  248. They seem to be faithful.

  249. They seem to do everything right for the

  250. most part. I mean, they had their lapses

  251. of judgment and their times of grumbling

  252. and complaining as well, but they were

  253. also interceding uh on behalf of God's

  254. people. And God had even said, "I'm

  255. going to start over with Moses." And and

  256. so you you you've got this perspective

  257. that Moses and Aaron, they're God's

  258. chosen leaders. We've just seen that

  259. here over the last few chapters that

  260. when Kora and his company rebelled

  261. against them, God established that they

  262. were his chosen prophet and priest and

  263. Israel must submit to him. So why didn't

  264. they get to go in? Was it because of the

  265. rebellion of the previous generation

  266. that they were grouped in with them?

  267. That's what this is designed to show us.

  268. What we find is that after Miriam's

  269. death, it says in verse two that there

  270. was no water for the congregation. And

  271. so they gather themselves against Moses

  272. and Aaron and they offered that familiar

  273. whiny complainy uh uh uh complaint

  274. against Moses. It says in verse three,

  275. "And the people choed with Moses." Choed

  276. is a cool word. It just simply means to

  277. contend with them, to have strife with

  278. him, to fight or quarrel against him.

  279. And so they they come against Moses and

  280. Aaron again and they said would God we

  281. would have died in the wilderness with

  282. our brethren. It would have been better

  283. than here in this place. Even they say

  284. they say why did you bring us out here

  285. anyways to die in this wilderness? They

  286. said why did you bring us out of Egypt

  287. in the first place and you brought us to

  288. this what they call in verse 5 evil

  289. place. They say this is no place for

  290. seed and this is no place for figs and

  291. for vines and for pomegranates and no

  292. neither is there any water to drink.

  293. This place is horrible. Why have you

  294. brought us here?

  295. But what the text tells us later is that

  296. their strife is not really with Moses.

  297. Their strife is with the Lord.

  298. After 38 long years of wandering,

  299. God has not yet fulfilled his promise

  300. and they are growing weary and they are

  301. growing impatient and their faith in

  302. God's promise is waning in this

  303. wilderness.

  304. So Moses and Aaron do what they normally

  305. do. They go to the tabernacle of the

  306. Lord and they fall down on their faces

  307. before him and the glory of the Lord

  308. appears. Now over the last several

  309. chapters when the glory of the Lord

  310. appears that means something bad is

  311. coming. But God is gracious and he is

  312. long-suffering and he is good even when

  313. we are not. And we see a shift here that

  314. God wants to do something for Israel and

  315. that is to instill faith in them. How?

  316. by providing water for them even in a

  317. time when they're striving against him.

  318. How is he going to do this though in a

  319. very similar way that he has before? He

  320. tells Moses, "I want you to take the rod

  321. and I want you to go and speak to the

  322. rock and it's going to bring forth its

  323. water and this is how you'll bring forth

  324. water and help all the congregation to

  325. drink and their cattle." So, I brought

  326. the rod back because I know that you all

  327. have great memories. And two years ago

  328. when we were in Exodus, you remember

  329. that I brought the rod from Exodus 17

  330. and when they were at Refodm and this

  331. text echoes back that account with that

  332. previous older generation, how he

  333. brought them to the the rock at Refodine

  334. and God told him, I want you to strike

  335. the rock and it's going to bring forth

  336. its it want you to notice and I want you

  337. to notice in verse number eight that he

  338. says you're to take the rod and gather

  339. the the assembly together, thou and

  340. Aaron and thy brother, and speak ye unto

  341. the rock before their eyes." Now, here's

  342. the question. Why does the Lord tell

  343. Moses to speak to the rock this time

  344. instead of striking the rock?

  345. Well, normally where we want to start is

  346. with New Testament typology because in 1

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  347. Corinthians chapter 10, the Apostle Paul

  348. said that that rock that followed them

  349. in the wilderness, that rock was Christ.

  350. And so, uh, and so sometimes we'll look

  351. at this and say, "Okay, well then what

  352. this was doing is it was it messed up

  353. the picture because Christ was only

  354. smitten once on the cross and then we

  355. speak to him and there's relationship

  356. there." And so I I understand that.

  357. That's great New Testament typology, but

  358. I wonder if there's something in this

  359. context for these people that was

  360. significant to them that we miss when we

  361. rush too soon to New Testament typology.

  362. And I think that's the case here.

  363. The rod was a symbol of God's power

  364. before Mount Si.

  365. And so if you remember right when when

  366. Moses was in Egypt and he went before

  367. Pharaoh, he said he had the rod in his

  368. hand. He said, "Pharaoh, let my people

  369. go." And he said, "Who is the Lord that

  370. I should obey him?" And he put down the

  371. rod and it became a snake. And then the

  372. Egyptians put down their rods and they

  373. became snakes. And then Aaron's rod went

  374. and consumed their snakes and it

  375. demonstrated God's power over them. They

  376. touched the the water with the rod and

  377. it turned into blood. They they

  378. stretched it up to the sky and the lice

  379. would come forth and the frogs and the

  380. flies and the darkness and the hail and

  381. the thunder and all of those things. And

  382. then when Israel gets delivered from

  383. Egypt, they head out to the Red Sea and

  384. the Egyptian army is coming down and

  385. they're all freaking out. Uh they're

  386. going to kill us and and Moses says,

  387. "Stand still." Which means shut your

  388. mouth and see the salvation of the Lord.

  389. And he takes that rod and he stretches

  390. it up over the Red Sea and the waters

  391. part. Israel walks across on dry ground.

  392. And when they get to the other side, he

  393. stretches out the rod again and the

  394. waters enclosed the Egyptian army. And

  395. God delivered them. They go a little

  396. further into the wilderness. And that's

  397. when you get to Refodm and he takes the

  398. rod and strikes the rock and it brings

  399. forth water that feeds all of them. And

  400. then right after that, Amalecch came,

  401. began to war against Israel in the

  402. wilderness, began to take the fringes

  403. and the elderly and the weak and the

  404. sick. And they go began to fight with

  405. Amalecch. And Moses goes up into the

  406. mountain and he holds the he holds the

  407. rod up over his head. And as long as the

  408. rod was held up, then Israel prevailed.

  409. But when he got tired and he had to

  410. rest, then Amalecch prevailed. And so

  411. Aaron and her came and they they held

  412. that his arms up so he could keep the

  413. rod up and they won. And and he called

  414. he built an altar there and called it

  415. Jehovani which means the Lord my banner,

  416. my standard. And it it demonstrated that

  417. that rod was the symbol of God's power

  418. to deliver Israel and bring them out of

  419. Egypt. It's a symbol of his power.

  420. Then Israel comes to Sinai

  421. and what you notice after Sinai

  422. is that the rod is almost obsolete.

  423. You don't hear anything or see anything

  424. about it. You have the the almonds

  425. budding upon it to demonstrate God's

  426. choice of Aaron as priest. And where did

  427. God tell him to keep that? In the ark of

  428. a covenant.

  429. That it was to be a sign. now not just

  430. of God's power in the past but of God's

  431. choice of Aaron a sign to a rebellious

  432. nation and this account here is the only

  433. other time you see the rod in the

  434. wilderness journey again when it was so

  435. prevalent in their exodus and so

  436. prevalent on the way to Mount Si yet now

  437. all of a sudden the the rod isn't the

  438. primary instrument that God is using to

  439. to communicate and demonstrate his power

  440. to his people why because at Mount Si

  441. God began to speak through his word

  442. through Moses. He gave them the law. And

  443. in that law, he gave them covenant

  444. promises. And now they not only have the

  445. rod of God's power, but they also have

  446. the promises of God. And God in that has

  447. promised that if they will walk in his

  448. ways and obey him and believe in him, he

  449. will bring them into the promised land

  450. and they will experience all of the

  451. blessings that he had promised to their

  452. fathers.

  453. And so when you consider this, I think

  454. what's happening here is God is teaching

  455. Israel a very specific lesson.

  456. As Moses stands there with the rod of

  457. God in his hand, but then he doesn't use

  458. it and he speaks to the rock, I think

  459. God is communicating this to Israel.

  460. My promise is just as dependable as my

  461. power.

  462. that everything they had seen God do

  463. throughout the wilderness, all of that

  464. power is packed behind the spoken

  465. promises of God. And he wants them to

  466. know that when Moses speaks to that

  467. rock, that his the word coming out of

  468. the mo out of Moses's mouth has just as

  469. much power as when he struck the rock

  470. and the water came out. And so what

  471. they're going to see in this is they're

  472. going to equate God's word with God's

  473. power. And therefore, what God is doing

  474. is he is presenting Aaron and Moses with

  475. an opportunity to lift God up as

  476. completely trustworthy to Israel. That

  477. they can lay hold of his promise that

  478. they can trust when they're in their

  479. wilderness, he's going to provide for

  480. them. And when they go into the promised

  481. land, he's going to bring them in and

  482. he's going to fight for them. And all

  483. the power that he showed in the past is

  484. going to be present with them in the

  485. future through his spoken word. his

  486. promise is as good as his power. I think

  487. that's what God is getting across.

  488. That just as he worked powerfully to

  489. bring Israel out, he'll work powerfully

  490. to bring Israel in.

  491. But what happens?

  492. Well, Moses and Aaron fail to do what

  493. God tells them to do. He starts off

  494. good. It tells us in verse 9 that Moses

  495. took the rod of God as the Lord

  496. commanded him. And that's about as far

  497. as his obedience goes. He gathers the

  498. congregation before the rock. And I want

  499. you to notice what he says in verse

  500. number 10. And Moses and Aaron gathered

  501. the congregation together before the

  502. rock. And he said unto them, notice

  503. first of all, he does not speak to the

  504. rock as God commanded. He speaks to the

  505. people which God did not command. And

  506. what does he say to them?

  507. here now ye rebels.

  508. Well, do you notice what he's doing

  509. there? He is categorizing the people as

  510. different from himself

  511. that you are the rebellious. And so what

  512. he's doing is he is he's setting himself

  513. apart from the rest of the people. And

  514. then it says this, must we fetch you

  515. water out of this rock? Now Moses is

  516. establishing himself and Aaron as the

  517. agents of their provision.

  518. And so what does Moses do? Notice this

  519. in verse 11. He lifted up his hand.

  520. Now that may not seem important at

  521. first, but I think there's a connection

  522. here to Numbers chapter 15 when it talks

    Numbers 15 chapter mention

  523. about presumptuous sins.

  524. and a presumptuous sin. That word

  525. translated presumptuous, it literally

  526. means with lifted up hand. The idea is

  527. high-handed sins. It it it establishes

  528. to us when Moses lifts up his hand that

  529. there is a a rebellious spirit going on

  530. in him. And I'm not the only one to call

  531. him a rebel. Deuteronomy says that he

  532. rebelled. And later in this chapter, it

  533. says that Aaron rebelled as well. And so

  534. there's there's a rebellion going on in

  535. Moses's heart here because his spirit is

  536. provoked to anger by this people. And it

  537. says that he lift up his hand and with

  538. his rod he smoked the rock twice. Now I

  539. don't know if this was a bang bang or if

  540. it was a bang.

  541. Nothing's happening. Let's try again.

  542. Bang. And then

  543. the water still gushes out in spite of

  544. Moses's rebellion and Aaron's rebellion.

  545. See, the the problem here wasn't the

  546. water. God wanted to provide for his

  547. people. He wanted to show them that he's

  548. trustworthy. And so, he still gave them

  549. what they needed. They got the outcome

  550. that they wanted,

  551. but God did not get the outcome that he

  552. wanted.

  553. Because instead of setting God apart

  554. as somebody that Israel could trust,

  555. instead of giving them the picture that

  556. his promise is as dependable as his

  557. power, now they have not put their eyes

  558. on the Lord, they have put their eyes on

  559. themselves. Now the people see them as

  560. fetching water out out of the rock for

  561. them. Now they see them as separate and

  562. distinct from the congregation in a

  563. category of their own. And so while they

  564. got the results they wanted, God did not

  565. get the results that he wanted.

  566. And so he he rebukes Moses and Aaron in

  567. verse 12.

  568. And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron.

  569. And here's first and foremost, because

  570. ye believed me not.

  571. Now, if I'm being honest, I really

  572. wrestled with this verse for hours and

  573. even days over the last couple of weeks.

  574. What does this mean? They did not

  575. believe him.

  576. This is Moses and Aaron.

  577. They've seen the miracles of God.

  578. They've they've interceded for the

  579. people and seen God answer their

  580. prayers.

  581. They've seen God do miracles and signs

  582. and wonders.

  583. Surely they believed that if they spoke

  584. to the rock, the water would come out. I

  585. don't think that was the problem of

  586. their their belief. And so, as I as I've

  587. wrestled with this, what does this mean

  588. they didn't believe him? And what is

  589. really the the problem here that it

  590. finally hit me this afternoon

  591. that when it comes to what God is doing

  592. here,

  593. God is seeking to instill faith in his

  594. people by giving them this picture in a

  595. time when they're dealing with a lot of

  596. death. In a time when they're really

  597. worn out by the circumstances of life.

  598. In a time when Miriam has died. In a

  599. time when they don't have any food and

  600. they don't have any water, in this time

  601. when they are weary and worn and dry,

  602. God is wanting to instill faith in them

  603. to say, "You can trust me. Don't rebel

  604. against me because you can trust me."

  605. And I think here's what's happening.

  606. Moses after 40 long years of putting up

  607. with this people and their rebellion

  608. against God, I think Moses has come to a

  609. place where he doesn't believe

  610. anything that the Lord will do

  611. will bring this people to trust in him.

  612. The Lord can do nothing

  613. to give this rebellious people faith in

  614. him.

  615. And because of that, it didn't matter

  616. how they got the water. He in a fit of

  617. rage and a moment of anger, as the word

  618. of God says, spake unadvisedly with his

  619. lips. He spoke rashly toward the people.

  620. He doesn't demonstrate that God is

  621. loving and caring and good. He doesn't

  622. demonstrate that God can be trusted. He

  623. gets their eyes off of God and gets

  624. their eyes on him and says, "This isn't

  625. going to work anyways to give them

  626. faith. So, must we just get you water

  627. out of this?" And he strikes the rock

  628. twice and he gets what he wants. But God

  629. does not get what he wants.

  630. He wants his people to put their faith

  631. in him.

  632. And so what God does is he tells them

  633. that because you believed me not to

  634. sanctify me in the eyes of the children

  635. of Israel,

  636. therefore ye shall not bring this

  637. congregation into the land which I have

  638. given them.

  639. Because they did not believe God.

  640. They did not take actions

  641. that set God apart in their eyes. as

  642. somebody they could trust.

  643. And so Moses and Aaron's unbelief,

  644. their faithless actions sent an

  645. unintentionally

  646. tragic message to Israel that we can't

  647. trust the Lord.

  648. We can't trust the Lord.

  649. And so the Lord tells them, you're not

  650. going to bring them in.

  651. Moses

  652. immediately sends messengers from Kadesh

  653. to Edom, appeals to him, "We are your

  654. brothers

  655. because Edom is the descendants of Esau,

  656. the brother of Jacob, the father of

  657. Israel.

  658. We're your brothers. You know how

  659. everything went bad with us in Egypt.

  660. You know how the Lord brought us out and

  661. now he's bringing us into the land of

  662. our fathers and we just want to pass

  663. through. We'll not eat anything. We'll

  664. not drink anything. We'll not go to the

  665. left hand or the right. We just want to

  666. pass through by the king's highway. And

  667. what this would have done is it would

  668. have take them on the shortest route on

  669. the southern border of Canaan is where

  670. they're at. through the borders of Edom

  671. straight to the borders of Moab which

  672. would lead them along the Jordan River

  673. and bring them close to the promised

  674. land.

  675. And what you find in the parallel

  676. accounts of Numbers 13 and 14 and this

  677. in numbers 13 and 14 when God said turn

  678. you and get you back into the wilderness

  679. they said we're going to go up anyways

  680. and they were destroyed by Amalecch and

  681. then they went back to the wilderness.

  682. And you see a similar direction here

  683. that when Moses is told, "You're not

  684. going in," he sends messengers that

  685. tries to bring them closer. But what

  686. happens is Edom refuses

  687. and he comes against them with a strong

  688. army. And it says in verse 21, "Thus

  689. Edom refused to give Israel passage

  690. through his border. Wherefore Israel

  691. turned away from him." Turn away is the

  692. same language as Numbers 14. when Israel

  693. was turned away from the border of

  694. Canaan and they were sent back by the

  695. way of the Red Sea. And what we're going

  696. to find in chapter 21 next week is that

  697. they had to go back by the Red Sea all

  698. the way around Edom and they didn't get

  699. to go in. Moses will later die on the

  700. plains of Moab near Jericho.

  701. And then we come to verse 22.

  702. They're in Kadesh. They depart from

  703. there and they go to Mount which

  704. is right on the border of both Canaan

  705. and Edom. And God tells Moses, "I want

  706. you to take Aaron and Eleazar up into

  707. the mountain, and I want you to strip

  708. Aaron of the the garments, the priestly

  709. garments, and I want you to uh put them

  710. on his son, Eleazar." We're having a

  711. transition of the priesthood here. And

  712. Aaron dies in the mountain of and

  713. he's buried there. And they they mourn

  714. him for 30 days. And it says in verse 24

  715. that it was because ye rebelled against

  716. my word at the waters of Meabbah. Ver

  717. verse number 13 tells us that this is

  718. the water of Meabbah because the

  719. children of Israel strove with the Lord

  720. and he was sanctified in them. Notice

  721. the outcome here. Because they believed

  722. him not to sanctify him in the eyes of

  723. the children of Israel in verse 12 and

  724. it says the end of verse 13 that he was

  725. sanctified in them. That means he

  726. sanctified himself. How did he do that?

  727. By showing the whole nation that

  728. unbelief

  729. will not be tolerated.

  730. Whether it's in the the the ordinary

  731. people or if it's in the leadership of

  732. God's people.

  733. Unbelief

  734. sends a tragic message.

  735. So God takes it seriously.

  736. What we find in this text that the Lord

  737. took Moses and Aaron's unbelief

  738. seriously because it failed to uphold

  739. the Lord's holiness.

  740. It failed to uphold the Lord's holiness.

  741. What does that mean exactly? This word

  742. sanctify, the idea of of upholding God's

  743. holiness in the sight of the people.

  744. Well, I think a way to think about it is

  745. like fine china. You know, at home,

  746. you've got dishes that you use every

  747. day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They

  748. go in and out of the dishwasher. They're

  749. ordinary. They're easily breakable.

  750. They're cheap. They're from the thrift

  751. store. You know, things things like

  752. that. They're just common. They're

  753. they're ordinary. But then if you've got

  754. some fine china where they've got a

  755. fancy trim around them or maybe they're

  756. themed after Christmas or Thanksgiving,

  757. they're expensive and valuable. They

  758. might be handwash only. Well, those are

  759. different. That's not ordinary dishes.

  760. They don't go in and out of the

  761. dishwasher. They don't get get put on

  762. the table for every single meal. They

  763. are usually displayed in a nice glass

  764. china cabinet to show everybody who

  765. walks by these dishes are special.

  766. That's the idea of upholding the Lord's

  767. holiness.

  768. Moses and Aaron have been called to put

  769. God's glory and his holiness and his

  770. trustworthiness on display to Israel.

  771. And because of their unbelief,

  772. they have treated him like a common

  773. dish.

  774. They have they have they have

  775. disregarded what God told them to do.

  776. They have not spoken to the rock. They

  777. spoke to the people. He lifted up his

  778. hand. He said, "Must we fetch you water

  779. out of this rock?" He struck the rock

  780. twice. I mean, there's a and God says

  781. that they rebelled against him at the

  782. waters of Meabbah. And so there there is

  783. a a rebelliousness here that comes from

  784. their unbelief.

  785. They have failed to uphold God as holy.

  786. And because God uh because Moses and

  787. Aaron failed to believe, they dishonored

  788. his holiness and it brought his

  789. discipline into their lives.

  790. He took their unbelief seriously.

  791. And this text serves as a warning to all

  792. of us of the same reality

  793. that the Lord takes our unbelief

  794. seriously

  795. because it fails to uphold his holiness

  796. before others.

  797. How so? I I want to I want to just make

  798. clear here that holiness is a very

  799. general attribute for God, but it is his

  800. most supreme attribute.

  801. Because the word holy, it comes from the

  802. root word that means to cut. And the

  803. idea is like if you're taking a cloth

  804. and you're cutting it in half and you're

  805. putting this one over here and this one

  806. over here. That's the idea of the word

  807. holy. This one is different than this

  808. one. What that means with God's supreme

  809. attribute being his holiness is that he

  810. is in a category of his own when it

  811. comes to righteousness,

  812. purity,

  813. love, grace, mercy,

  814. trustworthiness.

  815. He's in a category of his own. There's

  816. nobody more reliable than God. Nobody

  817. more faithful than God. Nobody more

  818. dependable than God. There's nobody that

  819. you can trust with your life and your

  820. soul and your family and your job and

  821. your finances more than God. He's in a

  822. category of his own. That is the

  823. opportunity that Moses and Aaron had was

  824. to display for all of Israel that God is

  825. is categorically

  826. more trustworthy than anyone they've

  827. ever known and he's greater than

  828. anything they've ever seen. He they they

  829. were given this opportunity but because

  830. of their unbelief they failed to uphold

  831. the trustworthiness of God as

  832. categorically different than anything

  833. else.

  834. And so the tragic

  835. message of unbelief

  836. is that it displays to others as if God

  837. is not as trustworthy

  838. as he really is.

  839. I want you to think about it with me for

  840. a moment.

  841. When you don't trust the Lord and you

  842. complain all the time or you lash out in

  843. anger or you take matters in your own

  844. hands, your your actions send the tragic

  845. message that God can't be trusted.

  846. When your when your co-workers know that

  847. you're a Christian and all they hear

  848. about is how how bad your life is and

  849. how uncertain your future is and how

  850. miserable your job is, it sends a

  851. message to them that you can't that they

  852. can't trust the Lord to care for their

  853. needs because you're a devoted Christian

  854. and you can't trust the Lord for your

  855. needs. It sends a tragic message to

  856. them.

  857. An angry outburst like the one that

  858. Moses had against the people. Sends a

  859. message that you don't believe the Lord

  860. can improve this situation.

  861. That he cannot change your spouse. That

  862. he cannot change your children. That

  863. nothing you're doing is working and

  864. there's nothing that God can do that'll

  865. work. And so I'm just going to let them

  866. have it. That's what anger does.

  867. When you stop now, when you give up on

  868. church because a leader failed you,

  869. it tells others in your life that the

  870. Lord makes no difference because all

  871. Christians are hypocrites, especially

  872. the one who failed you.

  873. It sends that message. When you stop

  874. giving, when you reach hard times, it

  875. can send a message to your spouse that

  876. the Lord can't be trusted to provide for

  877. your needs.

  878. Now you listen, you may say you trust

  879. the Lord. You may post your complaint on

  880. Instagram as a prayer request and even

  881. throw the hashtag on hashtag trusting

  882. God.

  883. What it does is it displays to other

  884. people that you can't trust him with

  885. your needs,

  886. that you can't trust him with with

  887. what's going on in your life. It sends a

  888. strong message to others in your life

  889. about your Lord. And when unbelief sends

  890. the wrong message to others, God takes

  891. it seriously.

  892. And if we will not sanctify the Lord by

  893. our faith, he will sanctify himself

  894. through our discipline.

  895. That's what we see God doing with Moses

  896. and Aaron and the rebellious generation.

  897. And so can I ask you church, what

  898. message are you sending by your actions?

  899. But I also

  900. think that God wants us to come away

  901. with something else too.

  902. And that is to understand

  903. that the Lord is wholly worthy of your

  904. trust.

  905. He's worthy of your trust.

  906. That's what he wanted to prove to Israel

  907. through this was that his promise is

  908. just as dependable as his power.

  909. And so I think God wants you to know

  910. today that he's worthy of your trust.

  911. And the greatest demonstration of that

  912. is the fact that he gave his only son

  913. for your salvation,

  914. for your redemption.

  915. that Jesus came and and and he always

  916. did those things that pleased his

  917. father, that he is the one who

  918. sanctified God, who always had him on

  919. the pedestal, who did everything for the

  920. glory of his father.

  921. Jesus lived a sinless life and he never

  922. failed one time. and he went to the

  923. cross to atone for your sin. And he rose

  924. again by his own power to accomplish

  925. your redemption. And when you trusted

  926. him as your savior, he brought you into

  927. his family. He called you his own and he

  928. promised you an eternal inheritance. But

  929. on top of that, he has promised you new

  930. covenant blessings of of closeness and

  931. access and relationship and provision

  932. and protection and care and security.

  933. And he invites you to partake in and to

  934. enjoy all of it. He wants that for you.

  935. This covenant redeemer, can I remind

  936. you, is the same God who created the

  937. whole universe with a word of his mouth.

  938. His word has always been powerful. So

  939. powerful to bring the worlds into

  940. existence out of nothing. He's still the

  941. same God who who brought the plagues

  942. upon Egypt, who parted the Red Sea, who

  943. brought mana in the wilderness and water

  944. from a rock. And he's the same king and

  945. the same Lord and the same redeemer who

  946. came and he restored the hearing to the

  947. deaf and gave sight to the blind and

  948. healed the crippled and raised the dead

  949. to life. And he's the same king who will

  950. return in great power and great glory

  951. and defeat all of his enemies and all of

  952. sin and all of evil and immediately in

  953. the twinkling of an eye change you into

  954. an immortal, incorruptible, sinless body

  955. that is capable of living in the

  956. presence of God for all of eternity. All

  957. of that power is packed into the

  958. promises of God's word and you can bank

  959. on them.

  960. God's given us his word to reveal

  961. himself

  962. so that we might trust in him.

  963. Even when you can't trust others, you

  964. can still trust the Lord. He is

  965. categorically

  966. different.

  967. He is holy in his love, holy in his

  968. faithfulness, holy in his

  969. trustworthiness. You can trust him no

  970. matter what.

  971. Unbelief

  972. fails to uphold God's holiness,

  973. but genuine trust magnifies his

  974. holiness.

  975. See, when when your friends, your

  976. family, and your co-workers see you

  977. calmly trusting the Lord through the

  978. most challenging and tragic of

  979. circumstances.

  980. It puts up a shiny display of God's

  981. glory that they can trust in the God you

  982. serve as well.

  983. When you stay with your spouse and pray

  984. for them no matter what, no matter how

  985. hard they are, it shows others that the

  986. Lord is worthy of their trust.

  987. When you remain faithful in church

  988. in spite of financial hardship, the

  989. health diagnosis, the loss or the

  990. suffering you put on display for all to

  991. see, your brothers and sisters in Christ

  992. who know everything you're going

  993. through.

  994. Your display of God's holiness and his

  995. categorically different trustworthiness

  996. shows your church family he's worthy of

  997. their trust as well. Yeah. So let me ask

  998. you again. What message are you sending

  999. to others by your actions?

1000. I would encourage you tonight that if

1001. you've been sending the wrong messages,

1002. you can come before the Lord,

  1003. acknowledge your unbelief.

1004. Acknowledge the message that it's

1005. sending to others and repent and seek

1006. forgiveness and it will be found. begin

1007. trusting the Lord and he can turn your

1008. actions and he can change he can he can

1009. change the message that you are sending

1010. in a way that brings others to trust in

  1011. him.

  1012. Unbelief

1013. brings bad decisions that dishonor God's

1014. holiness and brings his discipline.

1015. But he has proven himself trustworthy.

1016. So trust in him and send that message to

1017. others. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, you

  1018. are a trustworthy God.

1019. And I'm thankful that you put it on

1020. display for all of us to see.

1021. And I pray that whatever we might be

1022. going through in our lives

1023. that it would not so embitter us and

  1024. provoke us

1025. that we would not believe there's

1026. anything you can do about it.

1027. Rather, I pray that we would trust in

  1028. you.

1029. that we would accept the truth of your

  1030. word

1031. that you are on a different level

  1032. of trustworthiness.

1033. And so please help us to do that with

1034. everything we face in Jesus name. Amen.
