  1. Numbers chapter 17.

    Numbers 17 chapter mention

  2. Numbers 17. Once you found your place,

  3. you can stand as we give honor to the

  4. Lord's word.

  5. We're going to

  6. try something rather ambitious tonight.

  7. That is to cover chapters 17, 18, and 19

  8. in less than 50 minutes.

  9. And uh not sure if that will happen, but

  10. we're sure going to try.

  11. There's a reason for that. Number 16, we

  12. saw the rebellion against Moses, against

  13. Aaron,

  14. and the judgment that came out from God

  15. against Kora, Dayan, and Byum, as well

  16. as against the 250 princes that joined

  17. them, as well as 14,700

  18. Israelites

  19. who rebelled the very next day against

  20. them yet again.

  21. And what we're seeing is as part of

  22. their judgment for their rebellion

  23. against God when he was ready to bring

  24. them into the land, they're being turned

  25. back into the wilderness. And that

  26. entire generation will wander for 40

  27. years. And everyone that was 20 years

  28. and older will not get to see the

  29. promised land. They will die in the

  30. wilderness. We're seeing that happen in

  31. mass means in chapter 16.

  32. And as we come to chapter 17, what the

  33. Lord is doing is he gives Israel a sign

  34. that

  35. will establish once and for all that God

  36. has chosen Aaron and his sons. And so

  37. it's very interconnected

  38. what we saw last week that that they

  39. were really casting off Moses and Aaron.

  40. and when you cast off the priesthood

  41. that there is nothing to stand between

  42. you and death. That's what we saw. You

  43. need a priesthood. And so that theme is

  44. going to continue here um in chapters

  45. 17, 18, and 19. So let's just read

  46. chapter 17 for now and then we'll get

  47. into chapter 18 and 19 in the course of

  48. the message. So Numbers chapter 1 verse

    Numbers 1:7

  49. 7 or 17 verse1.

  50. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

  51. "Speak unto the children of Israel, and

  52. take of every one of them a rod

  53. according to the house of their fathers,

  54. of all their princes, according to the

  55. house of their fathers, 12 rods. Write

  56. thou every man's name upon his rod. Thou

  57. shalt write Aaron's name upon the rod of

  58. Levi.

  59. For one rod shall be for the head of the

  60. house of their fathers. and thou shalt

  61. lay them up in the tabernacle of the

  62. congregation

  63. before the testimony, which is the ark

  64. of the covenant, where I will meet with

  65. you. And it shall come to pass that the

  66. man's rod whom I shall choose shall

  67. blossom, and I will make to cease from

  68. me the murmurings of the children of

  69. Israel, whereby they murmur against

  70. you." And Moses spake unto the children

  71. of Israel, and unto every one of their

  72. princes gave him a rod, a piece, for

  73. each prince won according to their

  74. father's houses, even 12 rods, and the

  75. rod of Aaron was among their rods. And

  76. Moses laid up the rods before the Lord

  77. in the tabernacle of witness. And it

  78. came to pass that on the marorrow Moses

  79. went into the tabernacle of witness. And

  80. behold, the rod of Aaron for the house

  81. of Levi was budded, and brought forth

  82. buds, and bloomed blossom, and yielded

  83. almonds. And Moses brought out all the

  84. rods from before the Lord unto the

  85. children of Israel. And they looked and

  86. took every man his rod. And the Lord

  87. said unto Moses, "Bring Aaron's rod

  88. again before the testimony to be kept

  89. for a token against the rebels, and thou

  90. shalt quite take away their murmurings

  91. from me, that they die not." And Moses

  92. did so, as the Lord commanded him, so

  93. did he. Now, Israel recognizes

  94. by this demonstration that God has done

  95. that they are in the wrong. That God has

  96. made his choice clear and they have

  97. rebelled against him and they have seen

  98. what happened to those who had rebelled

  99. against them in the previous chapter.

  100. And so now here's their response in

  101. verse 12. And the children of Israel

  102. spake unto Moses saying, "Behold, we

  103. die. We perish. We all perish. Whosoever

  104. cometh anything near unto the tabernacle

  105. of the Lord shall die. Shall we be

  106. consumed with dying?

  107. See, they're concerned now that all of

  108. them are going to die and the chapter

  109. ends with a question. When something

  110. ends with a question, it demands an

  111. answer. And that is what God gives them

  112. in chapters 17 or 18 and 19. And so

  113. that's what we'll look at tonight. The

  114. title of the message is a priestly

  115. provision for a perishing people. Let's

  116. pray one more time. Lord, I just want to

  117. ask you to bless your word to make it

  118. clear. I pray you'd help us to focus on

  119. the main idea that you want to get

  120. across through these chapters. and I

  121. pray for your grace to communicate them

  122. clearly that our hearts would be open

  123. and ready to understand. It's in Jesus

  124. name I ask. Amen. Thanks for standing.

  125. You can be seated.

  126. God created every one of us with an

  127. instinct to survive.

  128. There's something in our brain that is

  129. like an alarm system so that it's

  130. constantly scanning for threats and

  131. whenever danger is detected our bodies

  132. shift into survival mode. you know,

  133. adrenaline begins to flow and your heart

  134. rate increases and your breathing

  135. accelerates and you know those stories

  136. of people who can lift cars when they're

  137. trying to save someone and and they they

  138. don't feel any pain. I think of how uh

  139. Bo Nicks a few weeks ago had broken his

  140. ankle and then went on to play a few

  141. more plays through that without really

  142. feeling the pain. That's what adrenaline

  143. uh can do for you. And so uh when when

  144. you talk about adrenaline, it's like the

  145. body saying in that moment, living

  146. matters more than comfort. Living

  147. matters more than comfort. And all of

  148. this takes place without a conscious

  149. thought about any of it. See, God

  150. designed us in such a way that whenever

  151. death becomes a serious threat, our most

  152. pressing cry is, "How can I survive? How

  153. can I live? And that's what Israel's cry

  154. is here in Numbers 17. They've been

  155. surrounded by death because they've been

  156. asking the wrong question. Who's in

  157. charge? Who's in charge? Remember Aaron

  158. and Miriam

  159. asked about Moses being in charge? And

  160. they were soundly rebuked. And now you

  161. have Kora, Dayan, and Abram bringing

  162. this great rebellion and saying, "You

  163. take too much upon you, Moses and Aaron,

  164. who died and made you king. Who made you

  165. a prince over us?" That's what they are

  166. concerned with. Who's in charge? And

  167. then their rebellion against them. Kora

  168. and his company were swallowed up by the

  169. earth. The earth split open and they

  170. fell and it covered them. We also found

  171. that 250 of the princes were consumed by

  172. the fire of the Lord and that 14,700

  173. died by a plague.

  174. Now God is using this sign to plainly

  175. demonstrate that he had chosen Aaron and

  176. that they were in rebellion and now they

  177. know that they are in trouble. And so

  178. they cry out there in verses 12 and 13,

  179. we die. We all die. Shall we be consumed

  180. with perishing

  181. with dying?

  182. That's their heart cry of survival mode

  183. in this moment. The most important

  184. question for them is no longer who is in

  185. charge, but how can we live? That's

  186. their question.

  187. They want to know how we can come near

  188. to this holy God and possibly survive.

  189. Isn't that what all of us want though?

  190. to live in God's presence,

  191. to have access to him unhindered.

  192. We want to live with him both now and

  193. draw near to him forever. That's what we

  194. want. We want eternal life with him, to

  195. be in the new creation when the Lord's

  196. tabernacle is with men, as Revelation 22

  197. says. That's where we all want to be,

  198. living in God's presence.

  199. But we also know that God is infinitely

  200. holy and we are not.

  201. That we have times of sin,

  202. times of rebellion.

  203. And what we know is that when we feel

  204. filthy,

  205. we don't feel fit for God's presence.

  206. We don't know how we can possibly live

  207. in God's presence. not only today but

  208. forever. How could God accept such

  209. unholy people into his holy presence?

  210. And yet that is exactly what our heart

  211. longs for.

  212. Eternal life in God's presence with no

  213. sin and no death. But here in lies the

  214. question, how can we who sin and die

  215. come near to God and live?

  216. Well, only the one who created us with

  217. that longing is able to fulfill that

  218. longing.

  219. And that's what numbers 17-19 is really

  220. about.

  221. Chapter 17 proposes that question.

  222. Who can draw near to the tabernacle of

  223. the Lord? Because whosoever cometh

  224. anything near to the tabernacle of the

  225. Lord shall die. Shall we be consumed

  226. with dying? That is their problem. We

  227. can't live in God's presence

  228. in chapters 18 and 19 is God's reply to

  229. their question.

  230. It's the remedy for the death that

  231. surrounds them. And what God provided

  232. for Israel in these chapters is what you

  233. and I must have if we are to live in

  234. God's presence. I mean, if you're to

  235. really enjoy your relationship with God

  236. today, fellowship, prayer, and communion

  237. with him, but not only that, but to live

  238. forever with him. Apart from God's

  239. remedy, we would perish in God's

  240. presence. Well, what is his remedy? I

  241. want you to see first of all that the

  242. first thing that God provides is a

  243. continual priesthood. He provides a

  244. continual priesthood. We read in chapter

  245. 17 how God demonstrates his choice of

  246. Aaron and his sons to serve as priests.

  247. He tells Moses, "I want you to get a rod

  248. from every tribe, and I want you to

  249. write the prince's name upon their rod,

  250. and I want you to write an Aaron's name

  251. on the rod of Levi, and I want you to

  252. bring all of these rods into the Holy of

  253. Holies, and I want you to lay them

  254. before the ark of the covenant." And God

  255. tells him that that what I'm going to do

  256. is the one that I shall choose, that

  257. rod, that dead piece of wood is going to

  258. bring forth sprouts. That's how I'll

  259. make my choice clear. What is his intent

  260. in this? If you look at the end of verse

  261. 5, he says,"I will make to cease from me

  262. the murmurings of the children of Israel

  263. whereby they murmur against you, you

  264. plural, Moses and Aaron." And so what it

  265. is is they have had a track record of

  266. murmuring against Moses and Aaron for

  267. their leadership. And what God is going

  268. to do is he is going to give them a

  269. once-for-all sign that he has chosen

  270. Aaron and his sons in particular. And it

  271. will cause them to stop. Why? Because

  272. every single time that they decide to

  273. grumble against them and say, "Who died

  274. and made you king?" then go back to

  275. Aaron's rod and say, "God did." He's

  276. going to cease their grumblings and

  277. complainings.

  278. So Moses does what the Lord tells him to

  279. do. He gathers their rods. He goes and

  280. he lays them before the ark of the

  281. covenant. And the very next morning, he

  282. goes in to look at them. And if you look

  283. at verse 8, it says, "And it came to

  284. pass on the marorrow Moses went into the

  285. tabernacle of witness. And behold, the

  286. rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was

  287. budded and brought forth buds and

  288. bloomed blossoms and yielded almonds."

  289. It did a little bit more than sprout. It

  290. went through the full process overnight

  291. that while you've got these 11 dead rods

  292. laying there against the altar, there's

  293. only one that sprung forth into new

  294. life. And that was Aaron the priests.

  295. And so Moses takes his rod, this

  296. four-fold vindication that Aaron is his

  297. choice, and he brings it out to the

  298. people, and he gives all of them their

  299. rods. And it becomes unequivocally clear

  300. that Aaron is God's chosen priest. And

  301. then God tells him, I want you to take

  302. that rod and I want you to store it in

  303. the ark of the covenant and it is going

  304. to be a testimony from here on out to

  305. every generation of Israel that I have

  306. chosen Aaron.

  307. Well, now that God has made his choice

  308. clear, Israel recognizes

  309. their rebellion.

  310. They recognize what has happened that

  311. they've seen all the death that took

  312. place and they realized their own

  313. murmurings and complainings, their own

  314. roles in resisting Moses and resisting

  315. Aaron. And now they are at this

  316. conclusion that we're all going to die.

  317. God's going to take us all out. Are we

  318. going to be consumed with dying? And

  319. God's remedy to their question is found

  320. in what Aaron's priesthood was appointed

  321. to do. And that's where chapter 18 comes

  322. in. Would you look at verse one? And the

  323. Lord said unto Aaron, "Thou and thy sons

  324. and thy father's house with thee shall

  325. bear the iniquity of the sanctuary, and

  326. thou and thy sons with thee shall bear

  327. the iniquity of your priesthood." And so

  328. the the first thing that we see is that

  329. Mo Aaron and his sons, they are

  330. appointed to bear sin. To bear sin.

  331. Remember, the high priest has stones on

  332. his shoulders and 12 stones on his heart

  333. that represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

  334. And his responsibility was to bear not

  335. only their names, but the iniquity of

  336. their names in God's sight. And so, they

  337. needed Aaron's priesthood to serve as

  338. sinbearers.

  339. But then we're going to see some

  340. instruction about the rest of the

  341. Levites. It says in verse two, "And thy

  342. brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the

  343. tribe of thy father, bring thou with

  344. thee, that they may be joined unto thee,

  345. and minister unto thee, but thou and thy

  346. son shall minister before the tabernacle

  347. of witness, and they shall keep the

  348. charge and thy charge, and the charge of

  349. all the tabernacle. Only they shall not

  350. come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary

  351. and the altar, that neither they nor ye

  352. also die. and they shall be joined unto

  353. thee, and keep the charge of the

  354. tabernacle of the congregation, for all

  355. the service of the tabernacle, and a

  356. stranger shall not come nigh unto you."

  357. And so here you have the priests that

  358. are bearing sin as they offer

  359. sacrifices, as they make loaves of

  360. bread, as they keep the the candle

  361. shining upon the 12 loaves of bread. And

  362. so they are bearing sin. But then you

  363. have the Levites whose duty is to

  364. protect the sanctuary that that they are

  365. responsible to live around the

  366. sanctuary. They are responsible to serve

  367. in the sanctuary to protect the altar,

  368. to protect the priesthood, to protect

  369. the entrance of the congregation to make

  370. sure that no outsider comes in. Why is

  371. that? Look at verse 5. And you shall

  372. keep the charge of the sanctuary, the

  373. charge of the altar, that there be no

  374. wrath anymore upon the children of

  375. Israel. Now, this echoes back to chapter

  376. uh number 16 and verse 46 where where

  377. Moses says that there is wrath gone out

  378. from the Lord and the plague has begun.

  379. And so what has just happened is that

  380. Kora and Dayan and Abram, they approach

  381. God with sensors.

  382. And the 250 princes from all the other

  383. tribes, they bring forth sensors before

  384. God to offer incense. question, who

  385. according to the law is permitted to

  386. offer uh incense?

  387. Only the priests,

  388. only Aaron and his sons. And so what you

  389. have is these men approaching God

  390. without the barrier of a priesthood. And

  391. what happens? The earth swallows some of

  392. them up. And the fire of the Lord comes

  393. out from the altar and consumes the 250

  394. princes. And the wrath of the Lord goes

  395. out against the rest of the people in

  396. their rebellion. And 14,700

  397. of them die. 15,000

  398. in a very short time. Why? They tried to

  399. approach God without the barrier of a

  400. priest.

  401. When I was in uh in after I graduated

  402. high school, I was working on a a

  403. Stuckco crew and uh I was here in

  404. Boulder working at a house actually and

  405. and I was working on the back deck and I

  406. was kind of leaning over in an awkward

  407. position and trying to mask off this uh

  408. this trim on the deck and and as I

  409. leaned over an exposed piece of wire

  410. went in my nose and this thing

  411. I felt it, you know. Could you imagine

  412. if the the current of that was higher?

  413. You know, I felt that. But if it was

  414. higher, I' i'd be dead meat. Why? Cuz I

  415. touched a live wire without a shield

  416. covering it. What God is doing is he is

  417. showing Israel that they cannot come

  418. into contact with a holy God without a

  419. shield or the holiness of God will

  420. consume them.

  421. And so he tells them that you need a

  422. priesthood,

  423. but this priesthood must be continual.

  424. And so how does he communicate that?

  425. It's really with the rest of the

  426. chapter, and we'll not go through the

  427. details again because we actually

  428. covered it in Leviticus. But what God

  429. reminds Aaron and his sons of is that

  430. all of the offerings of the children of

  431. Israel belong to them. Whatever is not

  432. fully dedicated and consumed on the

  433. altar of burnt offering is to be eaten

  434. by the priests. Whether it's the meat or

  435. if it's their first fruits or if it's

  436. the redemption of the firstborn or their

  437. first slings of animals or whatever it

  438. might be, whatever the children of

  439. Israel bring to offer to God, a portion

  440. of that belongs to Aaron and his sons.

  441. And then you go to verse number 20 and

  442. he talks about the Levites and he gives

  443. them the tithe of all the Israelites.

  444. And so the tenth of their harvest and

  445. the tenth of their first fruits and the

  446. tenth of their animals and the tenth of

  447. their money. And so all the tithe is

  448. brought to the temple and that goes to

  449. the Levites. And then he tells the

  450. Levites that they're to give a tithe of

  451. the tithe over to Aaron and the priests.

  452. Now why is this? Why is God reminding

  453. them and giving them these provisions?

  454. Well, he tells them that this is their

  455. inheritance. Why? So they can serve as

  456. priests. It's the reward for their

  457. ministry. It's the provision for their

  458. ministry.

  459. Why is that important? Well, it's

  460. because if the priests and the Levites

  461. have to go out and plow fields and sew

  462. seeds and reap harvests and make a

  463. living and provide for their families,

  464. then who will serve in the tabernacle?

  465. Who will offer sacrifices? Who will

  466. serve as that barrier or that shield

  467. that that enables them to draw near to

  468. God and live? See, God is establishing

  469. that for Israel to draw near and live,

  470. they must have a continual priesthood.

  471. And that's exactly what he provides for

  472. them. And I want you to understand today

  473. that we are sinners, too.

  474. And we still need something to shield us

  475. from the holiness of God consuming us.

  476. And what we need is the same thing that

  477. Israel needed. And that was a continual

  478. priesthood.

  479. But wherein is our continual priesthood?

  480. Well, in the old covenant, God chose

  481. Aaron and his sons to serve as priests.

  482. But in the new covenant, God has chosen

  483. another priest. And if you were to go to

  484. Hebrews 5:4,

    Hebrews 5:4

  485. it says, "And no man taketh this honor

  486. unto himself, but he that is called of

  487. God, as was Aaron." That is pointing us

  488. back to this very account where God made

  489. his choice of Aaron clear that Aaron did

  490. not take the priesthood for himself. He

  491. was called of God and it was given to

  492. him. The author of Hebrews goes on to

  493. say, "So also Christ glorified not

  494. himself to be made a high priest, but he

  495. that said unto him, thou art my son."

  496. That Jesus did not take a priesthood for

  497. himself, but he was given a priesthood

  498. by his father. And in Hebrews 7 22 it

  499. says by so much was Jesus made a shity

  500. of a better testament or covenant and

  501. they truly were many priests because

  502. they were not suffered to continue by

  503. reason of death. You know what he's

  504. talking about there the ironic

  505. priesthood that they could not be the

  506. continual priesthood that Israel needed

  507. because they die. And so there had to be

  508. a constant transition and changing from

  509. priesthood to priesthood. And what that

  510. did is it showed that that priesthood

  511. was insufficient

  512. that it that it wasn't what we needed.

  513. And so the author of Hebrews goes on to

  514. say this of Jesus, "But this man,

  515. because he continuthth ever, hath an

  516. unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is

  517. also able to save them to the uttermost

  518. that come unto God by him, seeing he

  519. ever liveth to make intercession for

  520. them. See, the priesthood of Aaron only

  521. pointed forward to a greater fulfillment

  522. in the priesthood of Jesus Christ. See,

  523. Jesus is not just continual. He is

  524. eternal. He has no beginning and he has

  525. no end. He is the eternal son of God.

  526. And what this tells us is that he

  527. continues to live forever to make

  528. intercession for us to mediate our

  529. relationship with God to uh to cover our

  530. sins to bring our prayers to God to

  531. mediate unhindered access to God. That

  532. is what Jesus Christ does. Through the

  533. eternal ministry of Jesus, you as a

  534. believer can come near to God without

  535. being in survival mode.

  536. See that wire? If it's got that rubber

  537. shield on it, I don't mind coming near.

  538. I don't mind touching it. I can wiggle

  539. it. I can move it around. Well, listen.

  540. When when Jesus Christ is shielding your

  541. sin from the holiness of God, you can

  542. come near without fear, without guilt,

  543. and without shame. Because Christ ever

  544. lives to intercede for us. He is the

  545. mediator of a better testament, a better

  546. covenant. And what that means is even

  547. when you have sinned because of Christ,

  548. you can come near with confidence that

  549. if you will confess, he will forgive.

  550. That's who he is. Just as a shield

  551. enables us to come near a live wire,

  552. Jesus enables us to come near a holy

  553. God.

  554. See, for Israel to come near to God's

  555. presence and live, they needed a

  556. continual priesthood to shield them from

  557. God's wrath. And that's exactly what he

  558. gave them. But that's not all that God

  559. provided for them because that's not all

  560. that they needed. We find in chapter 19

  561. that God also provides not only a

  562. continual priesthood but he also

  563. provides a cleansing sacrifice.

  564. In chapter 19, God instructs Moses and

  565. Aaron to offer a hepher as a sin

  566. offering.

  567. But it's not an ordinary sin offering.

  568. What we find in chapter 19 does not

  569. match what is given in Leviticus chapter

    Leviticus 4 chapter mention

  570. 4 regarding the sin offering. This one

  571. is very different. If you look at verse

  572. one, it says, "And the Lord spake unto

  573. Moses, chapter 19:1 and unto Aaron,

  574. saying, This is the ordinance of the

  575. law, which the Lord hath commanded,

  576. saying, Speak unto the children of

  577. Israel, that they bring thee a red

  578. hepher without spot, wherein is no

  579. blemish, and upon which never came

  580. yoke."

  581. And so what God is calling them to do is

  582. to bring a red heer that is pure,

  583. undefiled and unused. It is wholly

  584. dedicated for this unique purpose.

  585. Now some of you are wondering what is

  586. the esqueological connection

  587. of the red heers that were purebred in

  588. Texas and then shipped to Jerusalem.

  589. Does it have any significance regarding

  590. the end of the world and the third

  591. temple and all of that?

  592. I'm gonna sadly disappoint you. What we

  593. are reading in this chapter is the only

  594. mention ever of the red heer in all of

  595. scripture.

  596. So what that means is

  597. I don't know. There's nothing that the

  598. Bible gives me to suggest that this has

  599. anything to do with the end of the world

  600. or a reconstructing of a third temple or

  601. the tribulation period or the

  602. antichrist. That none of that is the

  603. point of the red heer. I say all that so

  604. it does not distract you and make you

  605. wonder why isn't he addressing the red

  606. heers in Jerusalem? Well, there you go.

  607. I just did and it means nothing right

  608. now.

  609. So, what is this red hepher all about?

  610. Well, let me tell you first what they're

  611. supposed to do with it. It's it's very

  612. unique. They're actually to take the red

  613. heer outside of the camp. They usually

  614. slaughter the hepher or the the bulls,

  615. the goats. They usually slaughter them

  616. at the door of the tabernacle of the

  617. congregation and then they pour out the

  618. blood at the altar and they offer the

  619. fat and the inwards and then they take

  620. the rest out and dispose of it. That's

  621. that's usually what they do with the sin

  622. offerings. But with this particular one,

  623. they bring the heer outside of the camp

  624. and they they kill it out there and in

  625. the sight of the priest and the priest

  626. brings the blood of the red heer not

  627. inside the tabernacle of the

  628. congregation but outside the door and he

  629. sprinkles it seven times toward the door

  630. of the tabernacle and then that's his

  631. role. They take they go in, they take

  632. the hepher in and somebody else places

  633. the hepher completely on the altar of

  634. burnt offering. They don't divide it.

  635. They don't only offer the fat. Nobody

  636. eats the rest of this. It's burned

  637. wholly and completely on the altar. The

  638. priest then takes a piece of cedarwood

  639. and hissup and a scarlet thread and

  640. throws it onto the altar along with the

  641. hepher. And then the priest is done. the

  642. priest must go and wash himself and wash

  643. his clothes and he remains unclean for

  644. the rest of that night. Now there's some

  645. and then the same thing with the person

  646. who who uh put it on the altar that he

  647. as well has to wash his clothes and

  648. bathe and be unclean for the rest of the

  649. night. Well then somebody else who is

  650. clean after the hepher is burned he

  651. takes the ashes of the hepher and he

  652. takes it outside the camp to a clean

  653. place where the ashes are usually poured

  654. out. But it says this time that he is to

  655. store them up, that he is to keep these

  656. ashes there in the clean place. And so

  657. that's what the the ordinance is up to

  658. this point. What it it like it's very

  659. unique. It's very different. The ashes

  660. are not poured out. They're stored. The

  661. whole animal is burned. The priest is

  662. unclean immediately after for the rest

  663. of the night as is the person who burned

  664. it. So there's a lot of unique stuff

  665. going on. Well, what was the unique

  666. purpose of this particular offering?

  667. Look at verse 11 of chapter 19. It says,

  668. "He that toucheth the dead body of any

  669. man shall be unclean seven days. He

  670. shall purify himself with it," that

  671. references the ashes. On the third day,

  672. and on the seventh day he shall be

  673. clean. But if he purify not himself the

  674. third day, then the seventh day he shall

  675. not be clean. And and so what do they do

  676. with these ashes? Look at verse 17. It

  677. says, "And for an unclean person, they

  678. shall take the ashes of the burnt hepher

  679. of purification for sin, and running

  680. water shall be put thereto in a vessel.

  681. And a clean person shall take hissup and

  682. dip it in the water, and sprinkle it

  683. upon the tent, and upon all the vessels,

  684. and upon the persons that were there,

  685. and upon him that toucheth a bone, or

  686. one slain, or one dead, or a grave. And

  687. so, do you catch what's going on here?

  688. They take some of the ashes from that

  689. heer and they put them in, let's just

  690. say, a jar. And then they find a running

  691. stream of water. And they take that jar

  692. and they let that running water come

  693. into it and form this mixture. And what

  694. it pictures is that God's provision of

  695. life is now conquering the death of that

  696. heer. And so it mixes with the ashes.

  697. And now they can take this watery

  698. mixture and they dip his in like a

  699. paintbrush and they fling it on the

  700. person that's unclean. They sprinkle

  701. them with it as well as every vessel

  702. that is unclean. Now, why have they

  703. become unclean?

  704. Death.

  705. This sacrifice

  706. is meant specifically and uniquely

  707. to cleanse Israel from death.

  708. Why is that important?

  709. And why is that given in this particular

  710. place?

  711. It is because Israel is surrounded by

  712. death.

  713. Kora and his company were swallowed up.

  714. 250 were consumed by the fire of the

  715. Lord. 14,700

  716. have died by plague. Death is

  717. everywhere. They're going to experience

  718. much more death over the course of this

  719. wilderness wandering of 40 years.

  720. and they're going to uh the the problem

  721. right now is that they are completely

  722. surrounded by death.

  723. They have to bury and remove these

  724. bodies.

  725. And what it means is that there going to

  726. be a lot of people who are defiled by

  727. these dead bodies and the beds they

  728. slept on and the the the the vessels

  729. they drank out of and everything that

  730. they touched. The whole camp is defiled

  731. with death right now. See, Leviticus

  732. showed them that if they contact a dead

  733. body or anything a dead body has

  734. touched, they become unclean. But

  735. Leviticus did not provide the cleansing

  736. remedy for them. And now Israel is

  737. surrounded by death. And now it's no

  738. wonder that they are crying out in

  739. chapter 17, we're all going to die.

  740. We're all going to perish. because they

  741. realize this that the tabernacle of God

  742. is right there and his holy presence is

  743. right there. And if we come near him in

  744. this defiled state, we will be consumed

  745. just like everybody else has been in

  746. this situation. And so what they need is

  747. something that can cleanse them from

  748. death.

  749. something that like that living water

  750. from the river can conquer the death

  751. that they have encountered.

  752. They're crying out, "We're all going to

  753. die." Question, why do medical examiners

  754. wear masks when performing autopsies?

  755. Well, it's because although that body is

  756. dead, it can still release infection and

  757. disease and fluids and dangerous

  758. pathogens. There's and there's nothing

  759. that a living mortician can do to put

  760. life into that dead body. There's a lot

  761. that dead body can do to put death into

  762. that mortician.

  763. See, Israel needed cleansing because

  764. death defiles everything it touches.

  765. Let me clearly state that death poses no

  766. danger to God. Life that comes from God

  767. can overcome any power of death. This

  768. rather is giving us an earthly picture

  769. of spiritual realities

  770. because he there's a lot of references

  771. to Hebrews now because it deals a lot

  772. with what's contained in these chapters.

  773. Hebrews 9 tells us that the first

  774. tabernacle and the first priesthood and

  775. the first sacrifices and rituals were

  776. given as signs by the Holy Ghost to show

  777. that the way into the holiest of all had

  778. not been manifested.

  779. The fact that they are still restricted

  780. from coming into God's presence and

  781. living. The fact that they are still

  782. restricted. Just like in the Garden of

  783. Eden, the cherubim protected the way of

  784. the tree of life. They could not come

  785. into God's presence and live in the

  786. garden. And now that they have this

  787. tabernacle, they still couldn't come

  788. into the presence of the holiest of all.

  789. Is because Eden has not yet been

  790. restored. And Aaron is not the remedy to

  791. bring us back to Eden, to bring us back

  792. to close intimate personal contact and

  793. fellowship with God. There's something

  794. coming that is greater, something that

  795. gives us greater access to God. And so

  796. these rituals were signs that there was

  797. a greater tabernacle, a greater priest,

  798. a greater sacrifice, and therefore a

  799. greater cleansing that was coming in the

  800. Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:13 says

    Hebrews 9:13

  801. this. Listen, this this is the only

  802. other time in scripture the ashes of the

  803. hepher are mentioned. Listen, for if the

  804. blood of bulls and of goats, and the

  805. ashes of an hepher, sprinkling the

  806. unclean to the purifying of the flesh,

  807. how much more shall the blood of Christ,

  808. who through the eternal spirit offered

  809. himself without spot to God, purge your

  810. conscience from dead works to serve the

  811. living God. What the author of Hebrews

  812. connects is that the ashes of that

  813. hepher mixed with running water purified

  814. Israel outwardly and temporarily, but

  815. the blood of Jesus purifies us inwardly

  816. and eternally.

  817. that it's no longer touching a dead body

  818. that keeps you from coming near to God

  819. because the blood of Jesus Christ

  820. conquered death. When he rose from the

  821. dead, he proved that death could be

  822. defeated by himself. And so what this

  823. means is that for us to come near to

  824. God's presence and live, we not only

  825. need a continual priesthood, but we need

  826. a cleansing sacrifice. And the cleansing

  827. sacrifice as well is the Lord Jesus

  828. Christ. See, when he gave his life on

  829. that cross and was buried in that tomb,

  830. he became death for holy, totally, and

  831. completely as a sacrifice that was

  832. finished on the cross,

  833. brought to ashes, so to speak.

  834. And yet at his resurrection, it was like

  835. the living water of life from God that

  836. connected with with the death that he

  837. died and it provided for us a cleansing

  838. not only from sin but a cleansing from

  839. death itself. That's what Christ

  840. provided for us. And what the author of

  841. Hebrews makes clear is that the

  842. cleansing blood of Jesus is so great and

  843. it's so perfect and it's so holy that

  844. God accepted in the place of all of

  845. those old sacrifices including the ashes

  846. of the red hepher and that it is Jesus

  847. who cleanses you and sprinkles you from

  848. sin and death.

  849. Notice what the author of Hebrews said

  850. in verse 14 of chapter nine.

  851. He said that if the ashes of the hepher

  852. sprinkled the flesh, the blood of Christ

  853. sprinkled the conscience.

  854. Here's what that means.

  855. that you in

  856. can come near to God in spite of your

  857. sin without guilt,

  858. without shame,

  859. without fear.

  860. And that is why the author of Hebrews

  861. repeats multiple times in that letter,

  862. let us draw near.

  863. Christ bore the iniquity. Christ bore

  864. the guilt and shame. Christ bore our sin

  865. on the cross. so that we could come near

  866. to God and live.

  867. Let me say it this way. Jesus died to

  868. give you life. And he rose to bring you

  869. close.

  870. That's why we know we can draw near

  871. because in his death, he provided a

  872. cleansing sacrifice. But when he arose,

  873. he ascended into heaven. He was seated

  874. at the right hand of God. And he forever

  875. lives as a great high priest to make

  876. intercession for us. He is a cleansing

  877. sacrifice and a continual priesthood by

  878. whom we can come near to God as clean,

  879. holy, and righteous in God's sight.

  880. That's because of Jesus.

  881. He mediates your relationship with God.

  882. And therefore, you can draw near and

  883. live. You can draw near without guilt

  884. and shame because he has cleansed you.

  885. The only esqueological fulfillment that

  886. I see in these red heers

  887. is that because Christ has cleansed you

  888. from sin,

  889. you can rest assured that when he

  890. returns,

  891. that you'll be able to stand in the

  892. presence of God, when new Jerusalem

  893. comes and new creation comes and the

  894. tabernacle of God is with men, you will

  895. be able to live near God's presence.

  896. Why? Because he has continually mediated

  897. your relationship with God. And he

  898. offered himself as a cleansing sacrifice

  899. who conquered death.

  900. Believers

  901. can draw near God's presence and live

  902. because Christ is our continual

  903. priesthood and he is our cleansing

  904. sacrifice.

  905. He died to give you life and he rose to

  906. bring you close. So let us draw near.

  907. You don't have to wait for Christ to

  908. return to draw near to him. You can have

  909. a relationship with him even now. You

  910. can enter into the holiest of all with

  911. unhindered access to God through Jesus

  912. Christ. Listen, that is why we pray in

  913. Jesus' name. Amen. Because the scripture

  914. tells us that whatever we ask in the

  915. name of Jesus Christ, we shall receive.

  916. Why is that? Because he is the one who

  917. is mediating our relationship with God.

  918. He is the only reason we can draw near

  919. to God. He's the only reason that we can

  920. have eternal life. And so, what we ought

  921. to do is just walk with him and talk

  922. with him and pray and worship and

  923. commune with him throughout each and

  924. every day.

  925. Listen believer, I want you to be

  926. encouraged in this fact. In Christ, you

  927. do not just survive in God's presence.

  928. You thrive in God's presence.

  929. So, as the author of Hebrews says, "Let

  930. us draw near with a true heart in full

  931. assurance of faith, knowing that our

  932. continual priesthood and our cleansing

  933. sacrifice has paved the way for access

  934. to God now and forever more." Let's

  935. pray. Father, thank you for the truth of

  936. the gospel contained from cover to cover

  937. in your word.

  938. I'm thankful that you taught us who

  939. Jesus is,

  940. what he came to do and accomplish.

  941. You showed us the ministry role that he

  942. serves even today,

  943. interceding for us as a faithful high

  944. priest,

  945. having offered himself as a cleansing

  946. sacrifice.

  947. I'm thankful for the resurrection by

  948. which you have proven

  949. life can come from death.

  950. I pray that as believers we would ever

  951. draw nearer to you through our savior

  952. Jesus. It's in his name I pray.
