  1. Let's take our Bibles and go to Numbers

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  2. chapter 16. [snorts]

  3. Numbers 16. It's been a few weeks since

  4. uh we've been in our study in Numbers.

  5. They have spied out the land, rebelled

  6. against the Lord, and were turned back

  7. into the wilderness. God gave them some

  8. instructions for how to deal with sin,

  9. as well as the offerings that they will

  10. offer when they come into the land.

  11. >> [snorts]

  12. >> And as we come to Numbers 16 now, it's

  13. really the first account of them back in

  14. the wilderness. And I don't think it's

  15. any surprise to any of us that it's an

  16. account of rebellion because that's how

  17. the wilderness wanderings went. We are

  18. going to cover the entire chapter. Um

  19. we'll not read it all at this time.

  20. We'll read a good portion of it. We'll

  21. jump around a little bit. So if you

  22. found your place, if you'll stand as we

  23. give honor to God's word, we'll begin

  24. reading in verse one.

  25. [snorts]

  26. Bible says, "Now Kora, the son of Isar,

  27. the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and

  28. Dayan and Abram, the sons of Eliab, and

  29. Anne, the son of Paleth, sons of Reuben,

  30. took men. And they rose up before Moses

  31. with certain of the children of Israel,

  32. 250 princes of the assembly, famous in

  33. the congregation, men of renown. And

  34. they gathered themselves together

  35. against Moses and against Aaron, and

  36. said unto them, Ye take too much upon

  37. you, seeing all the congregation are

  38. holy, every one of them, and the Lord is

  39. among them. Wherefore then, lift ye up

  40. yourselves above the congregation of the

  41. Lord. And when Moses heard it, he fell

  42. upon his face. And he spake unto Kora

  43. and unto all his company, saying, Even

  44. tomorrow the Lord will show, who are

  45. his, and who is holy, and will cause him

  46. to come near unto him. Even him whom he

  47. hath chosen will he cause to come near

  48. unto him. This do take you sensors Kora

  49. and all his company and put fire therein

  50. and put incense in them before the Lord

  51. tomorrow. And it shall be that the man

  52. whom the Lord doth choose, he shall be

  53. holy. Ye take too much upon you, ye sons

  54. of Levi. And so you can see we have

  55. another honor contest going on here.

  56. Kora and his company are saying that

  57. Moses and honor Moses and Aaron have

  58. taken this honor for themselves. Moses

  59. is saying the only ones who get honor

  60. are the ones that God chooses to give it

  61. to. He says, "So, we're going to let God

  62. sort this out." And so, he deals with

  63. Nathan, Dayan, and Abram and and calls

  64. them to come and they refuse to come.

  65. And uh then the next day, Moses sets up

  66. really a contest over who God is going

  67. to choose to give honor to. So let's

  68. look at verse 18. It says, "And they

  69. took every man his sensor, put fire in

  70. them, and laid incense thereon, and

  71. stood in the door of the tabernacle of

  72. the congregation with Moses and Aaron.

  73. And Kora gathered all the congregation

  74. against them unto the door of the

  75. tabernacle of the congregation. And the

  76. glory of the Lord appeared unto all the

  77. congregation. And the Lord spake unto

  78. Moses and unto Aaron, saying,"Separate

  79. yourselves from among this congregation,

  80. that I may consume them in a moment."

  81. And they fell upon their faces, and

  82. said, "Oh God, the God of the spirits,

  83. of all flesh, shall one man sin, and

  84. wilt thou be wroth with all the

  85. congregation?" And the Lord spake unto

  86. Moses, saying, "Speak unto the

  87. congregation, saying, Get you up from

  88. about the tabernacle of Kora, Dayan, and

  89. Abram." And Moses rose up, and went unto

  90. Dayan and Abram. And the elders of

  91. Israel followed him. And he spake unto

  92. the congregation, saying, "Depart, I

  93. pray you, from the tents of these wicked

  94. men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest

  95. ye be consumed in all their sins." So

  96. they got up from the tabernacle of Kora,

  97. Dayan and Abram on every side. And Dayan

  98. and Nyram came out and stood in the door

  99. of their tents and their wives and their

  100. sons and their little children. And

  101. Moses said, "Hereby ye shall know that

  102. the Lord hath sent me to do all these

  103. works, for I have not done them of my

  104. own mind. If these men die the common

  105. death of all men, or if they be visited

  106. after the visitation of all men, then

  107. the Lord hath not sent me. But if the

  108. Lord make a new thing, and the earth

  109. open her mouth, and swallow them up with

  110. all that appertain unto them, and they

  111. go down quick into the pit, then ye

  112. shall understand that these men have

  113. provoked the Lord. And it came to pass

  114. as he made an end of speaking all these

  115. words that the ground clave aunderder

  116. that was underneath them. And the and

  117. the earth opened her mouth and swallowed

  118. them up and their houses and all the men

  119. that appertained unto Kora and all their

  120. goods. They and all that appertained to

  121. them went down alive into the pit, and

  122. the earth closed upon them, and they

  123. perished from among the congregation.

  124. And all Israel that were round about

  125. them fled at the cry of them. For they

  126. said, "Lest the earth swallow us up

  127. also." And there came out a fire from

  128. the Lord, and consumed the 250 men that

  129. offered incense. And the Lord spake unto

  130. Moses, saying, Speak unto Eleazar the

  131. son of Aaron the priest, that he take up

  132. the sensors out of the burning, and

  133. scatter thou the fire yonder, for they

  134. are hallowed, the sensors of these

  135. sinners against their own souls. Let

  136. them make them broad plates for a

  137. covering of the altar. For they offered

  138. them before the Lord, therefore they are

  139. hallowed, and they shall be a sign unto

  140. the children of Israel. And Eleazar the

  141. priest took the brazen sensors wherewith

  142. they that were burnt had offered. And

  143. they were made broad plates for a

  144. covering of the altar to be a memorial

  145. unto the children of Israel, that no

  146. stranger which is not of the seed of

  147. Aaron come near to offer incense before

  148. the Lord, that he be not as Kora and as

  149. his company, as the Lord had said to him

  150. by the hand of Moses.

  151. And so now the next day, the whole

  152. congregation is going to gather together

  153. against them again and accuse them of

  154. killing the people of the Lord. The

  155. glory of the Lord comes down in the

  156. tabernacle, tells Aaron and Moses to get

  157. away from them because he's going to

  158. consume the whole congregation.

  159. It says in verse 47, Aaron took as Moses

  160. commanded and ran into the midst of the

  161. congregation.

  162. Behold, the plague was begun among the

  163. people. And he began and he put on

  164. incense and made atonement for the

  165. people, and he stood between the dead

  166. and the living, and the plague was

  167. stayed. Now they that died in the plague

  168. were 14,700

  169. beside them that died about the matter

  170. of Kora. And Aaron returned unto Moses

  171. under the door of the tabernacle of the

  172. congregation, and the plague was stayed.

  173. Title of tonight's message is follow or

  174. be swallowed.

  175. Follow or be swallowed. May God bless

  176. his word. You can be seated. We'll get

  177. into our message.

  178. [snorts]

  179. I think there's something in every

  180. person that in some way desires to be in

  181. charge.

  182. Don't we like to be in charge?

  183. Now, sometimes you may not want to be in

  184. charge because of the responsibility

  185. that that entails, but we like the

  186. prestige. We like the honor. We like the

  187. pay. Of course, who doesn't like telling

  188. people what to do? That's what we really

  189. like. You'd probably rather be the

  190. manager of a store than a cashier.

  191. You'd probably rather be the parent than

  192. the child. At least the kids wish that

  193. they were the parents in many

  194. situations. And of course, the oldest

  195. child, you'd rather be the oldest than

  196. the youngest, right? Because if you're

  197. the youngest, everybody's just always

  198. telling you what to do. You hear it from

  199. mom, you hear it from dad, you hear it

  200. from your siblings. And so there's

  201. nobody that you get to tell what to do.

  202. It's poor youngest children.

  203. Even from the fall of man, as part of

  204. the curse, the wife wants to be in

  205. charge of the husband.

  206. And the husband doesn't like that

  207. because he wants to be in charge. And so

  208. neither one of them want the other

  209. telling them what to do. He doesn't want

  210. to be mommed and she doesn't want to be

  211. daded, if that's a word. Fathered. There

  212. we go.

  213. That's a new word. It's a good one, I

  214. think. Dadded. [snorts]

  215. And so we don't like it when our boss

  216. gets on our case or when a coach gets in

  217. our face. We don't want anyone else in

  218. charge of our personal lives especially.

  219. Don't tell me who I can hang out with,

  220. what I can do, where I can go. Don't let

  221. the government impinge upon my rights

  222. and my freedoms. We would all say

  223. we want to be autonomous people, a law

  224. to ourselves, and therefore we're always

  225. in a fight to be in charge. And that's

  226. exactly what's going on in Numbers 16.

  227. Kora and his company are sick of taking

  228. orders from Moses and Aaron. They

  229. like, "Why have you exalted yourself

  230. above us? Who died and made you king?"

  231. Did you see that? Who made you a prince

  232. over us? They say, "You've taken too

  233. much upon yourselves. You've gone too

  234. far is what they said.

  235. Who put you in charge is really the

  236. question that they have. Well, according

  237. to Exodus chapter 3 and Exodus chapter

Exodus 3 chapter mention Exodus 28 chapter mention

  238. 28 and in Numbers 4, God put them in

  239. charge.

  240. God chose to give his law through Moses.

  241. He chose Moses to lead his people out of

  242. Egypt and he chose Aaron to be his

  243. anointed priest.

  244. And what follows in this text proves

  245. that God chose Moses and Aaron. And

  246. therefore, all the children of Israel

  247. must follow God's orders.

  248. They must follow the laws given at

  249. Moses's mouth. And they must respect the

  250. priesthood of Aaron and his sons.

  251. >> [snorts]

  252. >> But the reality is that that rebellious

  253. generation,

  254. they will die before they ever read this

  255. chapter.

  256. This chapter is intended for the future

  257. generations of Israel that will enter

  258. the land and live in the land. And God's

  259. message to them is really revealed in

  260. the sign that is given in verses 36-4

  261. that as the sensors of those rebellious

  262. men are hammered into plates of brass

  263. and are are attached to the brazen

  264. altar. It serves as a reminder to Israel

  265. to respect the law of Moses and the sons

  266. of Aaron because Moses is not going into

  267. the land with them. Neither is Aaron

  268. going into the land with them. But Moses

  269. is leaving behind them the books of

  270. Genesis through Deuteronomy to give them

  271. direction for how they can live as God's

  272. people. how they can live to enjoy and

  273. experience the blessing and the presence

  274. of God.

  275. Aaron is going to have sons that serve

  276. in hisstead like Eleazar who beats those

  277. sensors into brass plates.

  278. And so really what this is calling them

  279. to do is to respect the law of Moses and

  280. the priesthood of Aaron to follow their

  281. God-given orders.

  282. But of course, as we've seen, the

  283. Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 10

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  284. tells us that the events that are all

  285. recorded in the book of Numbers were

  286. written for our admonition

  287. to warn us not to walk in the same ways

  288. as that rebellious generation of

  289. Israelites so that we too can enjoy

  290. freely the presence and the blessing of

  291. God in our lives. And so that means that

  292. for us, this text is a call to follow

  293. God's orders, to obey God's word, and to

  294. respect God's priest. Well, why is that?

  295. I mean, what happens when we refuse to

  296. follow God's orders? Well, let's see it

  297. together as we make our way through

  298. Kora's rebellion and then God's

  299. response.

  300. Beginning verse one, Kora organizes

  301. a pretty big rebellion against Moses and

  302. against Aaron. Now, Kora is Moses's

  303. cousin, the son of his uncle, and he's

  304. the one who is leading the rebellion

  305. here, and he is a son of Levi and and

  306. particularly a son of Kohath. And so, he

  307. was gifted with the blessing of carrying

  308. the holy furniture and setting up the

  309. tabernacle as well as living right

  310. around the tabernacle. And so uh so he

  311. had a lot that had been given to him

  312. already but he also carried a a big

  313. weight of responsibility among the

  314. people had a voice among them. It says

  315. that he uh took also three sons of

  316. Reuben, Dayan, Abram and on and these

  317. men as being from the sons of Reuben

  318. would have also carried away because

  319. Reuben was the oldest although he was

  320. not given the birthight because of his

  321. sin. The children of Reuben still had a

  322. big part in the nation of Israel. They

  323. were the second camp to go after Judah.

  324. But it also says that they rose up

  325. before Moses. It literally means they

  326. got in Moses' face.

  327. And it says that they they came with

  328. certain of the children of Israel, 250

  329. princes of the assembly, men who are

  330. called here famous men of the

  331. congregation and men of renown. What all

  332. of this is supposed to show us is that

  333. there is great potential for their in

  334. these influential men to sway the

  335. congregation in their favor and away

  336. from Moses and Aaron. It says in verse

  337. three, they gathered themselves together

  338. against Moses and against Aaron. We're

  339. going to see that multiple times here.

  340. And what this chapter is is setting up

  341. is that God has chosen both Moses and

  342. both Aaron. That's what he's settling

  343. here. And so they rise up against them

  344. both. And here's what they say. Ye take

  345. too much upon you. You've gone too far.

  346. You claim too much authority, too much

  347. holiness. You claim that only you can

  348. speak for God and only you can draw near

  349. to God. But look, look at what they say.

  350. All the congregation are holy. Every one

  351. of them. He says that the Lord is among

  352. them. That hey, we we're just as holy as

  353. you. And the Lord did not say he would

  354. just live with you. He said he would

  355. live in the midst of all of us. And so

  356. they asked him, "Wherefore then lift ye

  357. up yourselves above the congregation of

  358. the Lord? Who put you in charge?" That's

  359. what they're asking.

  360. >> [snorts]

  361. >> They claim that Moses and Aaron have

  362. taken this authority for themselves.

  363. But in a turn of irony,

  364. when they say, "You've lifted up

  365. yourselves," it says in verse 4, "When

  366. Moses heard it, he fell upon his face."

  367. In fact, the posture that we most often

  368. see from Moses and Aaron in the book of

  369. Numbers is falling on their face. And

  370. yet they're saying, "You've lifted

  371. yourselves up."

  372. [snorts]

  373. Moses says, "Tomorrow,

  374. tomorrow the Lord will show who are his

  375. and who is holy, and he will bring him

  376. near unto him. Even he uh whom he hath

  377. chosen, he will cause him to come near."

  378. What what Moses is getting at here is

  379. this. This honor is not taken. This

  380. honor is given.

  381. This choice is not yours. This choice is

  382. not ours. The Lord is going to make his

  383. choice clear tomorrow. He tells them to

  384. fill their sensors with incense. And the

  385. Lord will show him who he has chosen.

  386. And he says, "You've taken too much upon

  387. yourself, oh sons of Levi. You've gone

  388. too far here."

  389. But then Moses

  390. really as he challenges them, he reveals

  391. the root of their rebellion.

  392. It says in verse 8, "And Moses said unto

  393. Kora, here I pray you, you sons of Levi,

  394. seemth it but a small thing unto you

  395. that the God of Israel hath separated

  396. you from the congregation of Israel, to

  397. bring you near to himself, to do the

  398. service of the tabernacle of the Lord,

  399. and to stand before the congregation, to

  400. minister unto him. And he hath brought

  401. thee near to him, and all thy brethren,

  402. the sons of Levi, with with thee." Do

  403. you get what he's saying here? He's

  404. drawing their attention to the way that

  405. they have belittled what God has already

  406. given them. He says, "Don't you see the

  407. the the privileged position that you

  408. have been given that they were chosen by

  409. God to serve in the tabernacle? They to

  410. carry the holy things to set up the

  411. tabernacle of God and to pitch their

  412. tents around the Lord's house." He's

  413. saying God gave you a privileged role

  414. and a close proximity,

  415. but the problem for Kora was that it

  416. wasn't enough.

  417. He says, "Is it a small thing for you?"

  418. Look at what God has given you. Is it

  419. not big enough for you? Look at what he

  420. says um at the end of of verse 10. and

  421. seek ye the priesthood.

  422. Also,

  423. it tells us that that what Kora really

  424. wants is that is that outside the

  425. tabernacle is not enough. He wants to be

  426. at the door of the tabernacle. He wants

  427. to be where Moses is. He wants to be

  428. where where Aaron and his sons are. He

  429. He wants to be able to go into the

  430. tabernacle to the Holy of Holies into

  431. God's presence and to offer incense on

  432. the altar of incense and to prepare the

  433. showbread and to dress the lamps. He

  434. wants to be able to have that kind of

  435. access to the Lord.

  436. What he had was not enough.

  437. Rebellion

  438. is often sparked by devaluing what God

  439. has given you and demanding instead what

  440. God has not given you.

  441. That's how Kora's rebellion was started.

  442. And that's how ours can be started as

  443. well. When you devalue what God has

  444. given you and you demand what God has

  445. not given you. Can I ask, is your spouse

  446. too small of a thing that you seek out

  447. women at the work or at the gym or

  448. online?

  449. Is she too small?

  450. Is your singleness too small for you?

  451. Have you become so desperate to be

  452. married that you seek a spouse that God

  453. has not given you? one who is lost and

  454. unbelieving.

  455. Is your home, your car, and all that God

  456. has provided for you, is it too small

  457. for you? Can I just speak some old

  458. English here? Seek ye more by means of

  459. gambling [snorts]

  460. or by taking on another job that keeps

  461. you from worship.

  462. [snorts]

  463. What about this? Is your ministry role

  464. too small for you?

  465. setting up those chairs, teaching those

  466. kids, seek ye the pastorate. Also,

  467. right now there's a movement through

  468. Christianity

  469. of of churches compromising on male

  470. pastoral leadership and it's getting

  471. into Baptist churches as well where

  472. women are becoming pastors which goes

  473. against God's created order as Paul told

  474. us in the book of first Corinthians. And

  475. he he relates it to creation that God

  476. made Adam first and then the woman that

  477. that the woman was deceived. And so God

  478. has a created order that he's made clear

  479. in scripture. And yet there are tons of

  480. women who don't see their God-given

  481. roles in church as big enough. And

  482. therefore they seek the pastor,

  483. something God has not given them.

  484. But can I also ask this question for

  485. those of us in ministry?

  486. Is that church too small for you?

  487. [snorts]

  488. Seek ye a bigger one, a better one with

  489. more content members,

  490. with less problems, with more people,

  491. with a bigger budget is what God has

  492. given you too small.

  493. See, [snorts] when we spend our time

  494. belittling what God has given us, it

  495. will lead us to a rebellious pursuit of

  496. what God has not given us, just like it

  497. has with Kora and his company in this

  498. text.

  499. If the Lord had given

  500. this authority to Moses and Aaron and

  501. Kora and his company is gathering

  502. together against them, they are actually

  503. not gathering against Moses and Aaron.

  504. They are gathering together against the

  505. Lord. Moses in fact says as such in

  506. verse 11, for which cause both thou and

  507. all thy company are gathered together

  508. against the Lord? And what is Aaron that

  509. you murmur against him? You're

  510. complaining to me, you're complaining to

  511. Aaron about this honor that we have

  512. allegedly taken, which there's plenty of

  513. times when Moses is like, "This is too

  514. much for me. God, kill me." Do we

  515. remember that? He said, 'I don't want

  516. any more part of this rebellious people.

  517. Don't let me see my wretchedness.

  518. See, he says, who is Aaron? We haven't

  519. made this choice. You've complained and

  520. murmured against the Lord.

  521. In verses 12 through 15, Moses calls

  522. Dayam in a Byum.

  523. They said, "We will not come up.

  524. Forget you, Moses." They turned Moses's

  525. words against him in verse 13. Is it a

  526. small thing that thou hast brought us up

  527. out of the land that flowth with milk

  528. and honey to kill us in the wilderness?

  529. Whoa, hold on a second. Who ever said

  530. Egypt was a land flowing with milk and

  531. honey? Egypt was a land of bondage.

  532. Egypt was a land of barrenness. Egypt

  533. was a land of of death and slavery and

  534. brutality. And yet he has the gall to

  535. look back on Egypt and say that was the

  536. land of milk and honey and you brought

  537. us out of that just to kill us in this

  538. wilderness.

  539. If that wasn't big enough now he says

  540. thou make thyself altogether a prince

  541. over us. You brought us out here to kill

  542. us and now you want to be king over us.

  543. Look what he says in verse 14. Moreover,

  544. thou has not brought us unto a land that

  545. flowth with milk and honey, or given us

  546. inheritance of fields and vineyards.

  547. Wilt [snorts] thou put out the eyes of

  548. these men? We will not come up.

  549. This is a a very harsh and sharp rebuke

  550. and allegations that are lashed out

  551. against Moses.

  552. And justly so, it says in verse 15,

  553. Moses was very wroth. It said unto the

  554. Lord, "Respect not thou their offering."

  555. This is the very same language that God

  556. used in regard to Cain's offering in

  557. Genesis chapter 4. It means he turned

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  558. his face away from it. He did not accept

  559. it. Why? Because he did not offer what

  560. God had commanded. And Moses is saying,

  561. "Don't respect their offering." He says,

  562. "I have not taken one ass from them,

  563. neither have I hurt one of them."

  564. They're they're saying, "I've done

  565. nothing good for them. I've only done

  566. wrong to them and yet I've not done

  567. anything wrong to them. Don't show

  568. respect to their offering.

  569. Moses

  570. and Kora and all his company then bring

  571. a sensor full of incense before the

  572. Lord. On the next day, they gather the

  573. whole congregation together against

  574. Moses and against Aaron at the door of

  575. the tabernacle of the congregation. And

  576. the glory of the Lord appears. Now in

  577. Exodus 40 when the glory of the Lord

  578. appears it was glorious. It was

  579. wonderful. The people fell on their face

  580. and worshiped. And in Leviticus when the

  581. glory of the Lord descended on the

  582. tabernacle it was glorious and the

  583. people fell on their faces and

  584. worshiped. But in the book of Numbers

  585. when the glory of the Lord comes down on

  586. the tabernacle judgment is coming.

  587. That's what we've seen. And what the

  588. Lord [snorts] does is he makes clear who

  589. he has chosen. First of all, notice that

  590. the Lord was ready to consume all the

  591. people. Look at verse 20. It says, "And

  592. the Lord spake unto Moses and unto

  593. Aaron, saying,"Separate yourselves from

  594. among this congregation that I may

  595. consume them in a moment. And they fell

  596. on their faces and said, "Oh God, the

  597. God of the spirits of all flesh." The

  598. the idea is here is he's the God who put

  599. breath and life and spirit into the soul

  600. of a man. You are the giver of life.

  601. >> [snorts]

  602. >> And now they ask, "Shall one man sin and

  603. wilt thou be wroth with all the

  604. congregation?"

  605. God, this is Kora leading the way. Will

  606. you judge the innocent with the guilty?

  607. And God's answer is no.

  608. He'll punish the guilty. Verse 23. And

  609. the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, speak

  610. unto the congregation, saying, Get you

  611. up from about the tabernacle of Kora and

  612. Dayan and Abyram. And Moses rose up and

  613. went unto Dayan and Abram. And the

  614. elders of Israel followed him. And he

  615. spake unto the congregation, saying,

  616. "Depart, I pray you, from the tents of

  617. these wicked men, and touch nothing of

  618. theirs, lest ye be consumed in all of

  619. their sins." So they g up from the

  620. tabernacle of Kora, Dayan, and Abram on

  621. every side. And Dayan and Abram came out

  622. and stood in the door of their tents,

  623. their wives, and their sons and their

  624. little children. And Moses said, "Hereby

  625. ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me

  626. to do all these works, for I have not

  627. done them of mine own mind." And so this

  628. first test here, so to speak, is about

  629. has God chosen Moses? And so now you've

  630. got Kora and Dayathan and Abram and Anne

  631. and the 250 priests. They are all there

  632. in their tents before the tabernacle of

  633. the congregation. and they have their

  634. sensors in their hands and they have

  635. fire upon those sensors. And what Moses

  636. uh is going to do here is he's going to

  637. say, "Here's the test. Here's the proof

  638. if God has chosen me because I haven't

  639. come up with all this in my mind."

  640. He says if these men

  641. die as all men die, if they die an

  642. ordinary death, it says if they die a

  643. common death or it says if they be

  644. visited after the visitation of all men.

  645. Visitation here is the idea of how God

  646. comes to look on people in judgment. So

  647. if God does, if God judges them in some

  648. way, he's judged before or if they die

  649. of natural causes, God hasn't sent me.

  650. But then he says, if the Lord makes a

  651. new thing,

  652. the idea is if if he creates a new

  653. creature, that's that's the idea here.

  654. uh the the literal rendering that that

  655. if if God does something that's never

  656. been done before, just as he created all

  657. the creatures that had never been

  658. created before, if he does something

  659. new, and then Moses gets specific and he

  660. says, "Now, let me spell it out for you.

  661. If the Lord splits the ground open and

  662. causes the earth to open up and to

  663. swallow them and cover them, then you'll

  664. know that they have provoked the Lord."

  665. They've provoked the Lord. And so this

  666. is the test.

  667. And as soon as the words leave Moses's

  668. mouth, it [snorts] says in verse 31,

  669. "And it came to pass as he made an end

  670. of speaking all these words that the

  671. ground clave aunderder that that it

  672. split that was under them. And the earth

  673. opened her mouth and swallowed them up.

  674. And their houses and all the men that

  675. appertain unto Kora, and all their

  676. goods, and they and all that appertain

  677. to them went down alive into the pit,

  678. and the earth closed upon them, and they

  679. perished from among the congregation.

  680. God does what Moses asks. I don't think

  681. it gets any clearer than Moses saying,

  682. "I'm going to pull something out of a

  683. hat here. If God does this that's never

  684. been done before, you'll know that he

  685. put me in charge here and that they have

  686. provoked the Lord." And that is exactly

  687. what happens.

  688. Then chaos ensues. As you can imagine,

  689. everyone else is scattering, screaming.

  690. We've got to get out of here, lest the

  691. earth swallow us up with them. And it

  692. says that a fire, the fire of the Lord

  693. broke out against the 250 men and burned

  694. them up and consumed them in the fire

  695. and they dropped their sensors on the

  696. ground.

  697. >> [snorts]

  698. >> God

  699. shows us that every guilty man perished.

  700. Kora, Dayan, and Abram and those who

  701. sided with them and the 250 men, every

  702. one of them perished in this judgment.

  703. God does not leave us guessing where his

  704. authority lies.

  705. He makes it clear that it lies with his

  706. anointed prophet and his anointed

  707. priest.

  708. [snorts]

  709. Immediately then after punishing the

  710. guilty, the Lord gives them a sign for

  711. future generations of Israelites.

  712. He tells Moses to instruct Aaron's son

  713. Eleazar to the this is the priest who's

  714. going to lead them into the promised

  715. land, the son of Aaron. He tells him

  716. that I want you to take all of the rebel

  717. sensors, all 255 of them, I guess, and

  718. and I want you to beat them with a

  719. hammer into thin flat plates of brass.

  720. And he says, "And what I want you to do

  721. is I want you to attach those to the

  722. outer walls of the altar of burnt

  723. offering." [snorts] And he says that

  724. that you're to do this. Listen, it says

  725. at the end of uh verse number 38, that

  726. they shall be a sign unto the children

  727. of Israel, what is the sign? Look at

  728. verse 40. To be a memorial unto the

  729. children of Israel, that no stranger

  730. which is not of the seed of Aaron come

  731. near to offer incense before the Lord.

  732. So, do you see what's going on here? God

  733. has established by the death of those

  734. men that he put Moses in charge. that

  735. his honor, his authority, his his right

  736. to speak from God's mouth, to write the

  737. law, to call the pe his his right to

  738. tear up the altar of Baal and grind it

  739. to powder and put it in the water and

  740. make them drink from it. That authority

  741. came from the Lord. Now, by this sign,

  742. he is sealing it by showing them that he

  743. has chosen Aaron and Aaron's seed alone

  744. to be the priest. He's establishing both

  745. the prophet and the priest as having

  746. authority directly from God. Why is he

  747. doing this? Look, look at the next

  748. phrase there in verse 40. That he be not

  749. as Kora and his company as the Lord said

  750. to him by the hand of Moses.

  751. [snorts] See what what this is is that

  752. God has given them this sign for every

  753. generation from this day forward. So

  754. that when they come into the tabernacle

  755. of the congregation and they offer an

  756. offering before the Lord, they will see

  757. these brass plates around the altar of

  758. burnt offering where their sacrifice is

  759. being burned up and the smoke is

  760. ascending to God so that they will

  761. remember what happened to Kora and all

  762. of his company when they rebelled

  763. against God's prophet and God's priest.

  764. It's so that they would remember what

  765. happened to them. So that they would

  766. follow God's orders.

  767. So that they would do what Moses told

  768. them to do in the law. And so that they

  769. would respect the ministry of Aaron's

  770. sons, the priesthood.

  771. [snorts] And so he gives them this

  772. particular sign.

  773. [snorts]

  774. It's to remind them what happened to

  775. Core and his company when they tried to

  776. cast off Aaron and Moses. What happened?

  777. They were swallowed. [snorts]

  778. They were swallowed.

  779. And so God's truth for Israel in this

  780. account is this. Follow God's order or

  781. be swallowed in God's judgment.

  782. Because here's the truth.

  783. [snorts] What happened to Kora and his

  784. company

  785. was liable to happen to every Israelite

  786. because they were rebellious sinners.

  787. But because they but because they were,

  788. God chose Moses to bring them out of

  789. Egypt and to bring them to Mount Si and

  790. to give them laws from God's mouth so

  791. that this sinful, rebellious people

  792. could live in the presence and under the

  793. blessing of their God. so that they

  794. could go to the land of Canaan and enjoy

  795. the promises God made to their fathers.

  796. That's why God chose chose Moses.

  797. [snorts] But the reality is is God knew

  798. they would fail. Why? They're

  799. rebellious, stiff- necked,

  800. stubbornhearted, sinful people. And so

  801. God also chose Aaron. And he chose Aaron

  802. to offer atonement for their sin so they

  803. could be cleansed from their uncleanness

  804. so that he could mediate their

  805. relationship with God. So listen, if

  806. they cast off Moses and they cast off

  807. the sons of Aaron, how can they live in

  808. God's presence? They would utterly be

  809. consumed.

  810. they would utterly be destroyed and

  811. swallowed up in God's judgment. In fact,

  812. that's what we see in the final verses

  813. of this chapter because the whole

  814. congregation the very next day gathers

  815. to murmur against Moses and against

  816. Aaron yet again accusing them of killing

  817. the Lord's people. And once again, the

  818. cloud of the tabernacle comes down and

  819. the glory of God appears and he tells

  820. Moses and Aaron to get up from among the

  821. congregation that he may consume them.

  822. And Moses and Aaron once again fall on

  823. their faces. But the wrath of the Lord

  824. breaks out upon the people of Israel in

  825. the form of a plague. And Moses tells

  826. Aaron to take a sensor and to put fire

  827. upon it and to run into the midst of the

  828. congregation and make an atonement for

  829. the people before the Lord. And look

  830. what it says in verse 48, "And he,

  831. Aaron, stood between the dead and the

  832. living, and the plague was stayed."

  833. It says in verse 49, "Now they that died

  834. in the plague were 14,700

  835. beside them that died about the matter

  836. of Kora."

  837. So here you have 15,000

  838. out of maybe a couple million people

  839. that have died.

  840. And the only reason that the other two

  841. million people did not die was because

  842. of the ministry of Aaron.

  843. The only thing that stood between them

  844. and death was the atonement offered by

  845. their high priest.

  846. See, the very ones that they were

  847. casting off in rebellion and thrusting

  848. away from them were the only hope they

  849. had to have a right relationship with

  850. God. [snorts]

  851. If Israel casts them out, there's

  852. nothing left to stand between them and

  853. death.

  854. And so God's message for the future

  855. generations

  856. was follow or be swallowed.

  857. And that's what they would see by those

  858. brazen panelings around the altar every

  859. time they offered to the Lord.

  860. So what does a text like this mean for

  861. us today?

  862. Well, God's message for them is still

  863. God's message for us today.

  864. that we must follow God's orders lest we

  865. be swallowed in God's judgment.

  866. [snorts] See, as children of God, we are

  867. called to follow his orders. We are

  868. called to obey his word. And God

  869. provides for us clear instructions for

  870. how we should live. That we should be

  871. holy, blameless, harmless, and pure.

  872. That we should be faithful to our

  873. spouses. And we should be obedient to

  874. our parents. That we should be uh

  875. faithful workers and generous bosses.

  876. That we should be forgiving and sober

  877. and hospitable. We should uh love our

  878. neighbors as ourselves and give to help

  879. our brothers and sisters in need. That

  880. we should share the gospel. That we

  881. should have a good testimony among the

  882. lost around us. And so when we follow

  883. God's word, we can experience God's

  884. blessing and enjoy God's presence.

  885. But because we are sinners, we will

  886. fail. And when we fail, judgment will

  887. come in the form of fatherly discipline.

  888. God punishes his own when we don't

  889. follow his way. Hebrews chapter 12 tells

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  890. us that one of the greatest signs that

  891. you are God's child is the way he

  892. disciplines you when you go out of his

  893. way.

  894. And so he that discipline that he brings

  895. into your life is not meant to kill or

  896. to destroy you. It's meant to bring you

  897. to repentance.

  898. He's he's given us his word. He's

  899. preserved it for us to show us the way

  900. that we ought to go. But when we fail,

  901. thank God, he also appointed a greater

  902. Aaron in our lives, a greater high

  903. priest in the Lord Jesus Christ because

  904. he shed his blood on the cross and he

  905. rose again and ascended into heaven and

  906. he offered his blood to atone for our

  907. sin. And it is Jesus who stands between

  908. the living and the dead. It is because

  909. of Jesus death on the cross that he ever

  910. lives to make intercession for us. not

  911. only for our daily needs but also for

  912. our spiritual cleansing in our lives

  913. that he is the one who who stands in the

  914. gap for us that he is the one who brings

  915. the cleansing in our lives and so I want

  916. to encourage you believer do not resist

  917. or despise God's discipline in your life

  918. we've got to follow God's orders or

  919. we'll be f swallowed in God's judgment

  920. Well, you might ask, what are God's

  921. orders? They're very simple for us as

  922. believers. Number one, obey his word.

  923. Live according to the word of God. No

  924. matter how you feel, no matter what the

  925. culture tells you, no matter what your

  926. boss tells you, no matter how much money

  927. is offered to you, no matter what you

  928. think you ought to do, you must follow

  929. God's word. Number two,

  930. when you don't,

  931. I don't say if

  932. when you don't, when you fail, when you

  933. sin, seek atonement in Christ. Seek

  934. atonement in Christ. First John chapter

  935. 2:2

  936. says, "If any man sin, we have an

  937. advocate with the father, Jesus Christ

  938. the righteous." You know what an

  939. advocate is? A person who goes between

  940. others.

  941. It is one who stands between the living

  942. and the dead. And what does he do? It

  943. says, "And he is the propitiation

  944. for our sin and not for ours only, but

  945. also for the sins of the whole world."

  946. The word propitiation is the same word

  947. they use for the mercy seat, which

  948. describes the idea of atonement, a

  949. covering for sin. Jesus is the atonement

  950. for you. And so when you sin, God's plan

  951. is for you not to sin. God's plan is for

  952. you to live by his word. But because

  953. you're a sinner, because we are all

  954. rebellious and we are all stiff necked

  955. and made up of the same stuff that

  956. Israel was, we will fail. But when you

  957. fail,

  958. look to your gobetween.

  959. It is the ministry of the priest Jesus

  960. Christ that stands between you and the

  961. judgment of God. Seek his atonement.

  962. Hebrews 12 says, "Despise not thou the

  963. chastening of the Lord." And then it

  964. goes on to say this, "Shall we not much

  965. rather be in subjection unto the Father

  966. of spirits and live?

  967. Sound familiar?"

  968. Moses cried out, "Oh God, the God of the

  969. spirits of all flesh." He recognizes God

  970. is the giver of life [snorts] and that

  971. that God is not one to punish the

  972. innocent. That he is not one to uh judge

  973. the entire congregation because of the

  974. sins of of one man. That because God is

  975. the one who gives life. He says, "Shall

  976. we not much rather be in subjection unto

  977. the father of spirits and live?"

  978. See, because here's what happens is

  979. often times when we face the judgment of

  980. God, the discipline of God because of

  981. our sin, we resist it.

  982. We fight against it. We we cry out

  983. blaming God. Why are you making this so

  984. hard on me? Well, maybe if you didn't go

  985. out of God's way and do your own thing,

  986. you wouldn't be under his discipline.

  987. Don't blame God for that. But that's

  988. what we tend to do. And what the author

  989. of Hebrews tells us is don't belittle

  990. the judgment of God in your life. Don't

  991. belittle his chastening. Rather, subject

  992. yourself to it. He is the father of

  993. spirits. He can restore and renew your

  994. life.

  995. God does not bring judgment on his

  996. children to ruin us, but to restore us.

  997. And so rather than rebel, you must

  998. repent.

  999. Then let me say this that if you're not

1000. his child and you do not follow his

1001. orders, you will be swallowed by

  1002. judgment.

1003. Because of your sin, you face the

1004. punishment of death and eternity in

1005. hell. But thank God, he appointed a

1006. truer and better priest in his son,

1007. Jesus Christ, who offered his own blood

1008. to atone for your sin. And the Bible

1009. says that when you believe and confess

1010. Jesus Christ as your Lord and your

1011. Savior, that God forgives your sin, he

1012. declares you righteous and he gives you

  1013. eternal life.

1014. But if you cast Jesus off

1015. and say, "No, there's got to be another

1016. way. There's got to be something that I

1017. can do." Listen, when you cast off the

1018. one who stands between life and death,

1019. all that's left is death.

  1020. You'll be swallowed up in God's

  1021. judgment.

1022. But friend, Jesus stands between you and

1023. death like a parent keeps his kid out of

  1024. the street.

1025. You have that picture in your mind?

  1026. [snorts]

1027. A little toddler is running out in the

1028. street and a truck is coming and the

1029. parent runs in front of them and stops

1030. them. That parent stands between that

1031. child and death. That's what Jesus has

1032. done for each of us. He is like he he is

1033. like the one who pushed you out of

1034. oncoming traffic. He's like the soldier

1035. who lays down on the grenade, the

1036. security detail who leaps in front of

1037. the bullet of those he is protecting.

1038. That is what Jesus has done for us. That

1039. is the picture we are given in this

1040. text. That is the picture of Jesus on

  1041. the cross

1042. standing in between us living and us

  1043. dying.

1044. That is our savior. That is our priest.

1045. He laid down his life to atone for your

1046. sin. And when you cast him aside, you

1047. take the hit. Don't rebel, friend. Trust

  1048. in Jesus.

1049. Follow God's orders or be swallowed in

  1050. judgment. That's the message of Kor's

1051. rebellion. So believer, can I ask you,

1052. are you resisting God's order in your

  1053. life right now?

1054. Are you resisting those who he's put in

1055. charge of you? Whether it's your parents

1056. or if it's a pastor or if it's some

1057. other authority in your life. Are you

1058. resisting the authority that he has

1059. ordained over you? Are you belittling

1060. what he's given you to pursue what he's

1061. not given you? [snorts] Have you set his

1062. word to the side and taken charge of

  1063. your own life?

1064. Have you set Jesus aside?

1065. Are you rebelling against him? Knowing

1066. your sin, knowing the discipline that

1067. you are under right now, but instead of

1068. turning to Jesus, you push away Jesus.

  1069. Is that you?

1070. [snorts] Well, listen. God will chasen

  1071. you when you rebel,

1072. but God will forgive you when you repent

1073. because of the blood Jesus shed for you.

1074. So, I encourage you to obey his word,

1075. but when you fail, seek atonement in

1076. Christ. [snorts] Our father, we come to

1077. you tonight and we're grateful for your

1078. word. Grateful that it's real with us,

1079. [laughter] that it still speaks

1080. thousands of years after it was recorded

1081. to show us that human beings have been

1082. the same from the beginning of time.

1083. We turn on you. We rebel against you.

1084. But I'm thankful that you sent your son,

1085. appointed him a great high priest,

1086. that he had atoned for our sin with his

  1087. blood on the cross.

1088. I pray, Lord, that you'd help us rather

  1089. than resisting

1090. your orders that we would follow your

  1091. orders.

1092. I pray that those here tonight who may

1093. not know Jesus as their savior, I pray

1094. they would believe the gospel of your

1095. son. They would experience full and free

1096. the forgiveness offered through his

1097. blood. I pray for believers who may be

  1098. struggling hard with sin.

1099. Maybe they are even experiencing the

1100. discipline of your hand right now.

1101. I pray they would not resist you.

1102. that they would repent and turn to you

1103. and find the forgiveness that is

1104. available in Christ. Would you please

1105. help us to respond as your spirit

1106. speaks? In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
