  1. Let's take our Bibles and go to Numbers

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  2. chapter 13. Numbers chapter 13.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  3. And once you found your place there, if

  4. you'll stand in honor of God's word,

  5. we'll go to Numbers

  6. 13. And our text this evening will go

  7. from verse number one all the way

  8. actually through chapter 14 and verse

  9. 10. A little bit of a lengthier

  10. narrative. We'll jump around here a

  11. little bit um to help us get a good

  12. grasp of what's going on ahead of diving

  13. into our message. So let's look at

  14. Numbers chapter 13

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  15. verse number one. It tells us at the end

  16. of of chapter 12 that they have now

  17. pitched in the wilderness of Pon after

  18. uh Moses and or Miriam and Aaron had

  19. risen up against his leadership that

  20. that Mo Miriam was smitten with leprosy

  21. and then she had to be shut out of the

  22. camp for seven days and then they were

  23. left there. um waiting for her to be

  24. welcomed back into the camp. And then

  25. they moved on to the wilderness of

  26. Piran. The wilderness of Piran is

  27. located directly south of the borders of

  28. Canaan. There's one wilderness, the

  29. wilderness of sin. That is right between

  30. uh the wilderness of Piran and the

  31. borders of Canaan. And so that's where

  32. they're at locationally. That means that

  33. they're very close.

  34. So close and yet so far. Let's read

  35. beginning verse one. And the Lord spake

  36. unto Moses, saying, "Send thou men, that

  37. they may search the land of Canaan,

  38. which I give unto the children of

  39. Israel, of every tribe of their fathers

  40. shall ye send a man, everyone a ruler

  41. among them." And Moses sent by the

  42. commandment of the Lord, and sent them

  43. from the wilderness of Pon. All those

  44. men were heads of the children of

  45. Israel. And so, it's going to give their

  46. names here over the next several verses.

  47. And then uh Moses is going to commission

  48. them to go and spy out the promised land

  49. and and to see whether it's good or bad,

  50. whether it's fat or lean, whether there

  51. are woods or not, what the cities are

  52. like, what the people are like. And it

  53. tells us that he did so if you look um

  54. at the end of verse 20, that now was the

  55. time of the first ripe grapes. And so

  56. this would have been the most fruitful

  57. time for the land. He wants them to see

  58. the land in all of its glory. And so it

  59. tells us that they went up and they

  60. search out uh the land. They cut off a

  61. big cluster of grapes and bring it back

  62. with a a bowl of fruit as well. And so

  63. um then they come to verse 25. It says,

  64. "And they returned from searching of the

  65. land after 40 days. And they went down,

  66. and they went and came to Moses and

  67. Aaron, and to all the congregation of

  68. the children of Israel, unto the

  69. wilderness of Piran, to Cadesh, and

  70. brought back word unto them, and unto

  71. all the congregation, and showed them

  72. the fruit of the land. And they told

  73. them, and said, We came unto the land

  74. whether thou sentest us, and surely it

  75. flowth with milk and honey, and this is

  76. the fruit of it. Nevertheless, the

  77. people be strong that dwell in the land,

  78. and the cities are walled and very

  79. great. Moreover, we saw the children of

  80. Anoch there, and the Amalachites dwell

  81. in the land of the south, and the

  82. Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the

  83. Amorites dwell in the mountains, and the

  84. Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the

  85. coast of Jordan. You know what they're

  86. saying there? There's people everywhere,

  87. armies everywhere.

  88. says in verse number 30, "And Caleb

  89. stilled the people before Moses and

  90. said, let us go up at once and possess

  91. it, for we are well able to overcome

  92. it." But the men that went up with him

  93. said, "We be not able to go up against

  94. the people, for they are stronger than

  95. we." And they brought an evil report of

  96. the land which they had searched unto

  97. the children of Israel, saying, The land

  98. through which we have gone to search it

  99. is a land that is that eateth up the

  100. inhabitants thereof, and all the people

  101. that we saw in it are men of great

  102. stature. All of them.

  103. All of them.

  104. You're telling me there wasn't one short

  105. person in all the land of Canaan? I do

  106. not believe it. For a second,

  107. you can tell that they're really

  108. exaggerating here. Now, it's not just

  109. the sons of Anoch, but it says, "There

  110. we saw the giants, the sons of Anoch,

  111. which come of the giants, and we were in

  112. our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we

  113. were in their sight." And all the

  114. congregation lifted up their voice and

  115. cried, and the people wept that night.

  116. And that's why I sound whiny is because

  117. they wept all night because of what was

  118. going on. Verse two. And all the

  119. children of Israel murmured against

  120. Moses and against Aaron. And the whole

  121. congregation said unto them, would God

  122. that we had died in the land of Egypt?

  123. Or would God we had died in this

  124. wilderness?

  125. And wherefore hath the Lord brought us

  126. into this land to fall by the sword that

  127. our wives and our children should be a

  128. prey? Were it not better for us to

  129. return into Egypt? They said one to

  130. another, "Let us make a captain, and let

  131. us return into Egypt." Then Moses and

  132. Aaron fell on their faces before all the

  133. assembly of the congregation of the

  134. children of Israel. And Joshua the son

  135. of Nun, and Caleb the son of Japan,

  136. which were of them that searched the

  137. land, rent their clothes. And they spake

  138. unto all the company of the children of

  139. Israel, saying, "The land which we

  140. passed through to search it, it is an

  141. exceeding good land. If the Lord delight

  142. in us, then he will bring us into this

  143. land, and giveth us a land which flowth

  144. with milk and honey. only rebel not ye

  145. against the Lord. Neither fear ye the

  146. people of the land for they are bread

  147. for us and their defense is departed

  148. from them and the Lord is with us. Fear

  149. them not.

  150. But the all the congregation bade stone

  151. them with stones and the glory of the

  152. Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the

  153. congregation before all the children of

  154. Israel.

  155. The title of our message tonight is

  156. faithful among the faithless. Faithful

  157. among the faithless. Let's pray one more

  158. time. Lord, I ask you to please speak

  159. through your word tonight that you would

  160. give us the challenge, the exhortation,

  161. the encouragement, and the comfort that

  162. your word is intended to provide for us

  163. tonight. Please help us by your spirit

  164. to understand it. I ask in Jesus name.

  165. Amen. Thank you for standing. You can be

  166. seated.

  167. 12 men went to spy on Canaan. 10 were

  168. bad and two were good. What do you think

  169. they saw in Canaan? 10 were bad and two

  170. were good. Some saw giants big and

  171. strong. Some saw grapes on clusters

  172. long. Some saw God was in it all. 10

  173. were bad and two were good. Some of you

  174. know what I'm talking about. Some of you

  175. are looking at me like I'm on something.

  176. I grew up singing that song in

  177. children's classes and in vacation Bible

  178. schools and it has very little

  179. theological depth aside fact that God

  180. was in it all. That one line there. But

  181. it's a fun song that speeds up each time

  182. you sing it and sparks some competition

  183. among the little ones. But that silly

  184. song retells a dark story for the

  185. children of Israel. Perhaps one of the

  186. darkest that because of unbelief, an

  187. entire generation of Israelites are

  188. going to die in the wilderness without

  189. ever experiencing the blessing of God's

  190. promise.

  191. Why

  192. those 10 bad spies infected the entire

  193. nation with a fear that sparked a

  194. rebellion to crown a new king and head

  195. back to the land of Egypt.

  196. While they saw the goodness of the land

  197. that God promised them, they couldn't

  198. get their eyes off the giants, the

  199. walls, and the armies. They were too

  200. tall, too strong, too fierce. They were

  201. the faithless 10. But then there were

  202. the faithful too. Joshua and Caleb. They

  203. did their very best to overpower the

  204. voices of the faithless and to call the

  205. people to trust in God. They were full

  206. of faith that they were well able to

  207. overcome and that God was able to bring

  208. them in.

  209. And so while them strong in faith,

  210. I often wonder in a text like this if I

  211. would have been grouped in to the

  212. faithless 10 or the faithful too.

  213. Because what I know is that God has

  214. promised a good and glorious rest in his

  215. eternal kingdom. But along the way, I

  216. tend to face hardship.

  217. That in life there are mountains to

  218. climb. There are walls to scale. And

  219. there are battles to fight.

  220. There are times when spiritual

  221. oppression is real and very fierce.

  222. Times when people ambush you. Times when

  223. the walls are closing in and life is

  224. just hard.

  225. Sometimes I know I can get weary,

  226. downtrodden, and disheartened by the

  227. struggles and and by knowing even what

  228. could lie ahead. And so I just wonder,

  229. would I be part of the faith? What about

  230. you? Have you ever asked yourself that

  231. question when you come to a text like

  232. this?

  233. I mean, you sure like to think that that

  234. we're able to overcome it not because of

  235. ourselves, but because the Lord is on

  236. our side, like Joshua said, we would all

  237. like to think that we would respond that

  238. way when we're facing the giants of

  239. life.

  240. But oftentimes, I wonder if I'm really

  241. made of that.

  242. And you might wonder the same thing.

  243. And see, we're all going to face

  244. hardship in this life on the way to

  245. Christ's kingdom. We saw that on Sunday

  246. in Acts chapter 14 when the Apostle Paul

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  247. encouraged those believers right after

  248. he had been stoned at Lististra that we

  249. must through much tribulation enter into

  250. the kingdom of God. It's inevitable.

  251. And what we can see today is that many

  252. Christians crumble in fear.

  253. That whenever life gets hard,

  254. they fall away.

  255. We find that when cultural pressures and

  256. the giants of this demonic kingdom of

  257. this earth presses down on believers

  258. that many Christians will quiet down

  259. about their faith. Many preachers in the

  260. pulpit will water down the gospel

  261. message. They'll not preach on sin.

  262. They'll not preach on eternal judgment

  263. in hell. They'll not uh call out uh uh

  264. cultural and moral issues like abortion

  265. and homosexuality and and and

  266. fornication and just act like

  267. everything's okay.

  268. They shy back in their faith.

  269. There are many Christians who are even

  270. abandoning the faith today for one

  271. reason or another. They pack it up and

  272. say, "Let's go back to Egypt."

  273. So what we find is that even today many

  274. people crumble when they're hurt or when

  275. life gets hard.

  276. And so the question really tonight is

  277. how can you stay faithful?

  278. How can you when

  279. the the battles are fierce,

  280. when the struggles are hard,

  281. when the when the results are confusing?

  282. When you when you struggle through the

  283. the battles of this life, you're trying

  284. to have your eyes fixed on the kingdom

  285. of Christ that is to come. You're trying

  286. to trust on the Lord to bring you

  287. through all of these things. And yet,

  288. you can find that you be you are shaken

  289. when you see the size of the armies and

  290. when you see the heights of the walls

  291. and you see the the height of the

  292. giants, the barrenness of the land in

  293. your life.

  294. It can be easy to join with the

  295. faithless majority,

  296. but God wants us to be faithful.

  297. And so, how can you stay faithful

  298. among the faithless as Joshua and Caleb

  299. did?

  300. As we read this entire account, we find

  301. that there was something uh in their

  302. faith. There's something that their

  303. faith was grounded in that gave them the

  304. courage to stand bold when others

  305. crumbled and fell. And if we will ground

  306. our faith the same way that they did,

  307. it'll help you when you face the battles

  308. and troubles of life to stay faithful to

  309. Christ.

  310. God sends 12 spies to give Israel a

  311. glimpse of the goodness of his promise.

  312. That's what this is about. He wants them

  313. to see all that God has in store for

  314. them. He wants them to see based on his

  315. promise all that God is going to

  316. overcome for them just like he had

  317. overcome Egypt for them. Just like he

  318. had parted the Red Sea for them. Just

  319. like he had conquered Amalecch for them

  320. in the wilderness once already as Moses

  321. held up the rod of God. He wants them to

  322. see everything that God has in store for

  323. them. This this journey to spy out the

  324. land is intended by God to instill them

  325. with confidence and rejoicing in what

  326. God's about to give them.

  327. And so he send he tells Moses that he

  328. wants him to send a ruler from every ch

  329. tribe. These would have been influential

  330. men. Why? So that their influence would

  331. carry the rest of the nation to go

  332. forward in faith to possess God's

  333. promise.

  334. And so he gives the list of the names

  335. here in verses 4-1 15. But what we find

  336. is there are two names that stand out in

  337. this account. The first one is in verse

  338. 6 of the tribe of Judah, Caleb, the son

  339. of Japana. Remember that Judah is the

  340. tribe of royalty and it is the leading

  341. tribe. It is the tribe to which Jacob

  342. promised that the scepter would not

  343. depart from his hand until Shiloh comes.

  344. The one to whom it belongs which we know

  345. as the Messiah, Jesus Christ. And so

  346. Caleb is really a a type of Christ here

  347. that he is from the line of Judah who is

  348. going to lead God's people forward in

  349. faith to conquer the territory that God

  350. has given to to ward off and fend off

  351. all of the enemies of Israel. He would

  352. have been leading in the battle as the

  353. chief of the tribe of Judah.

  354. And then you'll notice in verse number

  355. eight of the tribe of Ephraim,

  356. Ohea, the son of Nun. The name Ohea

  357. means very generically salvation.

  358. But it tells us in verse number 16 that

  359. these are the names of the men which

  360. Moses sent out to spy out the land. And

  361. Moses called Ohea, the son of Nun,

  362. Jehoshua,

  363. a a longer form of the name Joshua. And

  364. Joshua means the salvation of the Lord

  365. or the salvation of I am or it is the

  366. Hebrew name for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  367. Yesua

  368. is the same name. It means that Jehovah

  369. saves. And so what we have now are these

  370. two leading men. And these two men

  371. because of the rebellion of Israel here,

  372. they're going to be the ones to lead

  373. Israel into the land of promise. And and

  374. Caleb goes, "I want that mountain,

  375. Hebron,

  376. the mountain where the giants were, the

  377. mountain that possesses the cave of

  378. Mcpila, where Abraham and his and his

  379. wife and his sons and their wives were

  380. all buried. The first place that God

  381. gave to Abraham and his descendants in

  382. the land of promise." Caleb says, "I

  383. want that mountain. It's the place where

  384. David will reign for the first seven

  385. years."

  386. Joshua is the one who will lead the

  387. entire nation forward to conquer the

  388. land.

  389. These are the two spies that stand out

  390. in this text as faithful among the

  391. faithless.

  392. Moses sends them out to spy out the land

  393. in verses 17- 20. He gives them the

  394. instruction to see what the land is like

  395. and the people and the buildings and the

  396. structures and the armies and and to see

  397. what everything is like. And he tells

  398. him, I want you to bring back some of

  399. the the fruit of the land and and I want

  400. you to to go and it's time of the first

  401. ripe grapes. And so, as I mentioned

  402. before, this is this is the best time of

  403. the year for the land of Palestine. And

  404. God's showing them the glory of the land

  405. and all of its beauty and all of its

  406. fatness and all of its strength.

  407. And so it says in verse 21 that they

  408. went up and searched the land from the

  409. wilderness of Zen unto Rehob as men came

  410. to Hamath and they ascended by the south

  411. and came to Hebron where a Hyman and and

  412. Shack and Talmi the children of of Anch

  413. were. The word Anoch means neck. They

  414. are called the Anakims which means long

  415. necks.

  416. When you think of something with a long

  417. neck, what do you think of? a giraffe.

  418. Giraffes are tall, right? The idea is it

  419. really communicates that these are very

  420. tall, forceful men. They're the Anakims.

  421. It says in verse number 23, "And they

  422. came into the brook of Eshkol and cut

  423. down from thin a branch, watch this,

  424. with one cluster of grapes, and they

  425. bear it between two upon a staff."

  426. We're not talking about the little bunch

  427. of grapes that we bring on Saturday

  428. morning to outreach.

  429. We're talking about these grapes are so

  430. big and this cluster is so large that

  431. two guys have to bear it on their

  432. shoulders by a pole. It's huge. It what

  433. it does, it bears witness to the

  434. fruitfulness of this land. It says there

  435. as well, they brought the pomegranates

  436. and of the figs. This is to be

  437. encouraging to them. They're they're not

  438. only getting a a glimpse of what God has

  439. in store, they're getting a taste of

  440. what God has in store.

  441. So in verse 25, it says they returned

  442. from searching of the land after 40

  443. days.

  444. And so what God is doing is he is he is

  445. giving them a glimpse of the goodness of

  446. the land in all its glory and in all of

  447. its fruitfulness.

  448. And so while they go and spy out the

  449. land, they behold the goodness of the

  450. land. But they also saw the challenges

  451. that lie ahead,

  452. the height of the Anakims,

  453. the size of the walls, the strength of

  454. the armies.

  455. While this spy mission was intended to

  456. instill confidence in all that God would

  457. do and all that God would overcome to

  458. fulfill his promise, it actually has

  459. quite another effect on the majority of

  460. the spies. The majority of the spies

  461. were full of fear. Their first report is

  462. really a mixed bag. It says in uh verse

  463. number uh 26 or 27 it says and they told

  464. them and said we we came unto the land

  465. where it thou sentest us and surely

  466. surely it flowth with milk and honey.

  467. God wasn't lying. It's dripping off the

  468. trees. That's a that's an idiom for for

  469. this thing's got everything you could

  470. ever want. It says look here's some of

  471. the fruit of the land. They show them

  472. the grapes. They show them the

  473. pomegranates. They show them the figs.

  474. and they say, "Man, this is what this is

  475. what the land brings forth. It's pretty

  476. awesome."

  477. But then it says in verse 28,

  478. "Nevertheless,

  479. in spite of how good the land is, the

  480. people be strong that dwell in the land.

  481. And the cities are walled and very

  482. great." They probably saw the the walls

  483. of Jericho there and how massive they

  484. were. and they just didn't see how they

  485. were ever going to be able to breach

  486. through uh those walls. They were too

  487. strong and too big. It says they're very

  488. great. It says, "And moreover, we saw

  489. the children of Anoch there. We saw

  490. those long necked people there and the

  491. Amalocites,

  492. those ones who attacked us and ambushed

  493. us in the wilderness,

  494. they were there. the Hittites, the

  495. Jebusites, the Amorites dwell in the

  496. mountains, and the Canaanites dwell by

  497. the sea and by the coast of Jordan. The

  498. the Canaanites fill the land from coast

  499. to coast,

  500. and there are armies in the mountains,

  501. and there are armies in the valleys.

  502. They're too strong for us. They're

  503. discouraging the people.

  504. In verse 30, Caleb, it says, still the

  505. people before Moses. He said, 'N no, let

  506. us go up at once and possess it, for

  507. we're well able to overcome it. He

  508. expresses great confidence that they can

  509. overcome it. He understands that this is

  510. not in the strength of their might. He

  511. understands that God is on their side

  512. and I'm convinced that's what he's about

  513. to tell them. But before he can even get

  514. there, we have a little bit of

  515. embellishment taking place.

  516. They want to make sure that nobody's

  517. going to going to side with Caleb on

  518. this because they don't want to go fight

  519. these battles. And so it says in verse

  520. 31, "But the men that went up with him

  521. said,"We be not able to go up against

  522. the people, for they are stronger than

  523. we, and they brought up an evil report

  524. of the land that they had searched unto

  525. the children of Israel, saying, "The

  526. land through which we have gone to

  527. search it, it is a land that eateth up

  528. the inhabitants thereof." Well, that's a

  529. little different than what they first

  530. said. It's a land flowing with milk and

  531. honey, just like God said. Here's the

  532. Look at this big old cluster of grapes.

  533. Look at these beautiful pomegranates and

  534. these amazing and tasty figs. I mean,

  535. look at everything that the land has.

  536. Yeah, that land we were just talking

  537. about, there's actually nothing there.

  538. It's so rugged. It's so rough. It's so

  539. barren. It consumes everyone who lives

  540. there. Well,

  541. you think this is like a kid who lies

  542. and can't get their story straight,

  543. right? They're like, "There's all these

  544. people and yet they're all eaten by the

  545. land."

  546. He goes on, it gets even better. Look at

  547. verse uh the end of verse 32. It says,

  548. "And all the people that we saw are men

  549. of great stature.

  550. They're all huge. Every one of them,

  551. like even the babies."

  552. But then look at verse 33. And there we

  553. saw the giants, the sons of Anch, which

  554. come of the giants. This word giants is

  555. the word nephilim. You know what the

  556. nephilim are? You go back to Genesis

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  557. chapter 6. And it's those big, strong,

  558. mighty men of renown that lived before

  559. the flood. The ones that that that sent

  560. the earth into violence and wickedness

  561. and evil that brought about the flood.

  562. The Nephilim are there.

  563. I thought the Nephilim were destroyed by

  564. the flood.

  565. Do you see what they're doing here?

  566. They're making it bigger than it really

  567. is. They saw some Anakims. They saw some

  568. long necked people up in Mount Hebbran,

  569. but now they're saying they're all over

  570. the place. And they're even bigger.

  571. They're not just the the Nephilim.

  572. They're or they're not just the Anakims.

  573. They're the Nephilim. You know, these

  574. big, mighty, strong men.

  575. It says we were in our own side as

  576. grasshoppers.

  577. So, we were in their side.

  578. Did they ask someone?

  579. Do you guys think we're grasshoppers? I

  580. mean, I don't see anything that there

  581. was any conflict at all. In fact, what

  582. you find is when you come to the book of

  583. Joshua and they go into and Joshua only

  584. sends two spies this time. He's like,

  585. "Forget the other 10. We're only sending

  586. two this time." And they go in and they

  587. end up hiding out in the house of Rahab

  588. the harlot. And you know what Rahab

  589. says? The inhabitants of the land, their

  590. hearts are melting before you because of

  591. all the Lord has done for you in the Red

  592. Sea.

  593. >> They had a very skewed perspective. They

  594. didn't talk to anybody because if they

  595. told anybody Israel was on the way, they

  596. would have all been melting away in

  597. fear.

  598. But here's what happens.

  599. When 10 people

  600. respond in fear, it infects the whole

  601. nation.

  602. It says in chapter 14:1, "And all the

  603. congregation lifted up their voice and

  604. cried, and the people wept that night,

  605. and all the children of Israel murmured

  606. against Moses and against Aaron." And

  607. the whole congregation said to them,

  608. "Would God that we had died in the land

  609. of Egypt, or would God we had died in

  610. this wilderness." I I thought about

  611. titling this message, be careful what

  612. you wish for, because that's exactly

  613. what's going to happen to them because

  614. of this rebellion.

  615. They said, ' And wherefore hath the Lord

  616. brought us into this land to fall by the

  617. sword that our wives and our children

  618. should be a prey? We're not better for

  619. us to return into Egypt. They said one

  620. another, "Let us make us a captain and

  621. let us return into Egypt." We're going

  622. back, Moses, whether you're coming or

  623. not.

  624. You can just see the infectious nature

  625. of their fear.

  626. Now they would rather go back and be

  627. slaves than in Egypt than even risk one

  628. more day with the Lord in the

  629. wilderness.

  630. The whole nation is so faithless they're

  631. ready to pack up and go back to Egypt.

  632. Well, while the whole nation is full of

  633. fear, Joshua and Caleb were full of

  634. faith.

  635. You notice in verse six, well, verse

  636. five, it says, "Moses and Aaron fell on

  637. their faces before all the assembly of

  638. the congregation of the children of

  639. Israel." They they they can't say

  640. anything.

  641. There's a revolt going on. But it says

  642. Joshua the son of Nun. So now we have

  643. Joshua kind of taking the lead here as

  644. the first name mentioned and Caleb the

  645. son of Japona, which were of them that

  646. searched the land. Rent their clothes.

  647. What that what that is is it's a it's an

  648. expression of of of deep uh a deep

  649. distress. No, you guys don't know what

  650. you're saying and you don't know what

  651. you're doing. There's something out in

  652. front of us that's very good. There's

  653. something out in front of us that's that

  654. we're very capable of possessing. It

  655. says in verse number seven, "And they

  656. spake unto all the company of the

  657. children of Israel, saying, the land

  658. which we passed through to search it, it

  659. is an exceeding good land. The land is

  660. so good there aren't words to describe

  661. it. It's beyond words.

  662. But then it says in verse 8, if the Lord

  663. delight in us, then he will bring us

  664. into this land and give it us a land

  665. which flowth with milk and honey.

  666. Notice he says, "If the Lord delights in

  667. us,"

  668. the word delights conveys a deep

  669. covenant affection for someone. In fact,

  670. it's first uh used in Genesis 34:1 19

    Genesis 34:1

  671. when Sheckchham delighted in Jacob's

  672. daughter, Dina, that he was willing to

  673. do anything in order for her to become

  674. his wife.

  675. It it's used of Moses in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 25:7

  676. 25:7 in the context of a man delighting

  677. in a wife. It it is used in the context

  678. of David delighting in Mary's uh in in

  679. marrying Saul's daughter Michael. And

  680. then God uses it in Isaiah chapter 62 to

    Isaiah 62 chapter mention

  681. describe his delight in Israel in

  682. marrying her in entering a covenant

  683. relationship with the nation of Israel.

  684. And so when you see this word delight,

  685. it means to take deep great covenant

  686. pleasure in to be delighting in them.

  687. You see, this is what Joshua has in mind

  688. when he says, "If the Lord delights in

  689. us, he will bring us in." If the Lord

  690. has deep covenant affection for us,

  691. he'll bring us in.

  692. But notice that by Joshua and Caleb's

  693. actions,

  694. their their exhortation, their

  695. challenge, let's go up at once. Let's go

  696. take it. God's going to give it to us.

  697. That what that is doing is they're not

  698. suggesting does God delight in us? I it

  699. it may be possible that he delights us.

  700. No. What they are saying is if God

  701. delights in us, by the way, and he does,

  702. he's going to give it to us. Well, how

  703. did they know that God delighted in

  704. them? Well, it's because when they were

  705. at their worst, God showed them grace.

  706. It's because when they were faithless in

  707. Egypt, God brought them out. God did

  708. mighty plagues there and God parted the

  709. Red Sea and he redeemed them by the

  710. blood of the Passover land. That it's

  711. because of the way that God redeemed

  712. them when they weren't looking for him

  713. at all. The way God brought them out,

  714. that demonstrated his delight. But you

  715. know what else did that? As they went

  716. out into the wilderness after seeing all

  717. the plagues and after seeing the parting

  718. of the Red Sea, they began to complain

  719. in the wilderness. And you know what God

  720. did? He provided them mana and he

  721. provided them quail and he brought water

  722. out of a rock. And then when they go to

  723. Mount Si and they are worshiping a

  724. golden calf there, saying these are the

  725. gods that brought you out of the land of

  726. Egypt that God was was ready to punish

  727. them. And when Moses interceded for

  728. them, God showed them grace. And when

  729. God said, "I'm not going with you." you.

  730. And Moses said, "We're not going without

  731. you." God said, "Okay, I'll go with

  732. you." God demonstrated his faithfulness

  733. to Israel time and time again. In spite

  734. of their lack of faithfulness, Joshua

  735. and Caleb understood that when they were

  736. at their worst, God was at his best. And

  737. that demonstrated to them that he did

  738. delight in them. that they had a deep

  739. covenant relationship with them with him

  740. that was not based on how good they were

  741. but on how good he was.

  742. And so Joshua and Caleb are drawing from

  743. their past experience of redemption to

  744. express faith that the God who brought

  745. them out would surely bring them in.

  746. They call on the people in verse number

  747. nine. Only rebel not ye against the

  748. Lord. Neither fear ye the people of the

  749. land for they are they are bread for us.

  750. That what do you do with bread? You eat

  751. it. Is he talking about cannibalism? No.

  752. He's using an analogy here. He's saying

  753. that that you're worried about us being

  754. a prey for them, our children being a

  755. prey for them. No. No. We're going to

  756. consume them. That's what he's saying.

  757. He says here, "Their defense has

  758. departed from them." See, while while

  759. they all saw that these armies were were

  760. fierce and and and giants and and all of

  761. that, what what Joshua saw was this,

  762. they've got nobody protecting them.

  763. They don't have a god. This word, this

  764. word defense, it's literally the word

  765. shadow.

  766. I imagine as Joshua is saying this that

  767. he looks up at the cloud of God's

  768. presence that has hovered over them by

  769. by a day by day for since they left

  770. Mount Si. God's shadow is cast over

  771. them. And he says they have no shadow

  772. over them. It says and the Lord is with

  773. us. Fear not them. Let's go take it.

  774. God's going to do this.

  775. But it says in verse 10, "But all the

  776. congregation bade stone them with

  777. stones."

  778. Here you have 10 spies who are faithless

  779. and their evil report brings a faithless

  780. rebellion that will not be persuaded

  781. otherwise.

  782. But right there in the midst of it, you

  783. have two men who were faithful.

  784. They were full of faith. They would not

  785. give in to the fear culture.

  786. They saw the same land, the same fruit,

  787. the same cities, the same walls, the

  788. same armies, the same giants. But while

  789. nearly the whole nation responded with

  790. fear, why did Joshua and Caleb respond

  791. with faith?

  792. Joshua and Caleb were full of faith

  793. because their faith was grounded in

  794. God's delight.

  795. It was grounded in the fact that they

  796. knew God delights in us.

  797. The same way a father delights in his

  798. child and the same way a husband

  799. delights in his wife, God delights in

  800. us.

  801. God set his love and affection on

  802. Israel, not because they were good, but

  803. because he was gracious. And because

  804. that grace was often extended when they

  805. were at their worst, they knew that can

  806. only be the delight of God in his

  807. people.

  808. They believed this that the God who is

  809. delighted to bring them out was still

  810. delighted to bring them in

  811. in spite of their faithlessness.

  812. And I want you to know tonight that the

  813. same thing is true in your life as it

  814. was for them. That if you are in Christ,

  815. God delights in you.

  816. He delights in you.

  817. He demonstrated his delight in the way

  818. that he brought you out of sin.

  819. Infinitely holy God. see in me that

  820. would pro possibly bring any pleasure to

  821. his soul.

  822. What is it? Well, when you and I

  823. couldn't help ourselves, God sent his

  824. son Jesus into the world to bleed and

  825. die on a cross for our sin as a lamb

  826. without spot and without blemish. And

  827. his blood atoned for all of your sin.

  828. And it satisfied God's wrath against

  829. you. And when you trusted Christ as your

  830. savior, that blood was applied to you as

  831. it was of the doorpost before the

  832. Passover lamb. And when you and and when

  833. you trust Christ as your savior, God

  834. sets his heart on you, not because you

  835. are good, but because he is gracious. He

  836. He like a father delights in his

  837. children and a husband delights in his

  838. wife. God delights in you. He delights

  839. in me. Christ is listen to this. Christ

  840. is so great that you as a sinner can

  841. have such affection and delight from God

  842. that he would say, "I delight in you."

  843. That's how great Christ is.

  844. because of all our sins and all of our

  845. offenses against God have been totally

  846. removed from us and they've been placed

  847. on Jesus at the cross. Christ's

  848. righteousness has been placed on you to

  849. where when God sees you, he sees you not

  850. as a sinner but as a son.

  851. That's the greatness of Christ.

  852. And so now, in spite of your flaws and

  853. in spite of your failures, in spite of

  854. your times perhaps of rebelliousness,

  855. the anger and the confusion that you've

  856. directed at God at times, the doubts you

  857. experience, the faithlessness that you

  858. have, in spite of all of those things,

  859. God can still delight in you because of

  860. Jesus Christ.

  861. That's amazing.

  862. And as a good father and a faithful

  863. husband, he undertakes your care, your

  864. provision, and your protection through

  865. everything you face in life. The God who

  866. delights in you also fights for you. As

  867. we sang, he will keep you from all evil.

  868. Behind you and before you, he will

  869. sustain you through this journey from

  870. now and ever more.

  871. God does that for you.

  872. The God who delighted to bring you out

  873. still delights to bring you in.

  874. He promises you an entrance into his

  875. glorious eternal kingdom. One that is

  876. free from the sin, the suffering, the

  877. pain, and the death that you experience

  878. in this life. the loss that you face

  879. regularly,

  880. the doubts, the confusion, the health

  881. problems,

  882. the brokenness.

  883. His eternal kingdom is free from all of

  884. that.

  885. His streets are paved with purest gold.

  886. His walls are made of jasper. His gates

  887. are made from his throne. And where the

  888. trees the the leaves of the tree of life

  889. are for the healing of the nations and

  890. its fruit produces eternal life in you.

  891. God is bringing you to a good land, an

  892. exceedingly good land. One where words

  893. fall drastically short of accurately

  894. describing

  895. as what God has in store for you. But

  896. before we get there,

  897. before he brings us in,

  898. there are things he must bring us

  899. through in this broken world. There are

  900. times when God will give you a taste of

  901. his goodness.

  902. Times when you enjoy a fruitful season

  903. of ministry.

  904. times when you enjoy the fruit of a

  905. marriage that you have spent years

  906. laboring in that field and plowing and

  907. tilling soil and planting seeds and

  908. making deposits and he allows you to

  909. enjoy a wonderful marriage. That's a

  910. taste of his goodness.

  911. Times when you're flourishing at your

  912. job, when you're raking in the gold and

  913. are totally satisfied in life, all your

  914. needs are met. They're all cared for.

  915. There are times when you get to

  916. experience that in life. There are times

  917. when life is like a bowl of ripe and

  918. plump and juicy fruit, a massive cluster

  919. of delicious grapes. Life can be that

  920. way at times,

  921. but then there are times when you're

  922. climbing mountains,

  923. scaling walls, and fighting giants.

  924. You face times when there is physical

  925. pain, suffering, and declining health,

  926. bad test results, and bad diagnosis.

  927. You'll face times when you get cheated

  928. out of money, times when you lose your

  929. job, times when the housing market

  930. crashes at the wrong time.

  931. A day may come when you're ambushed by

  932. political giants who seek to destroy

  933. Christianity.

  934. when the battle against Christ rages

  935. throughout the world. That time is

  936. coming.

  937. And it's in those times that faith is

  938. deeply tested.

  939. It's in those times when the faithless

  940. will compromise on doctrine, when they

  941. will turn back on the faith or at least

  942. keep quiet about it. It's in those times

  943. when you could feel like throwing in the

  944. towel, packing up, and just going back

  945. to Egypt. Life was a lot easier before I

  946. started following Christ. You can feel

  947. that way.

  948. There are times when you get your eyes

  949. set on all the obstacles that stand

  950. between here and the good land God is

  951. bringing you to.

  952. And as you take your eyes off of him and

  953. you put them on all those things,

  954. faith begins to dip.

  955. How can you remain faithful

  956. among the faithless?

  957. It's the same way Joshua and Caleb did.

  958. By grounding your faith in the delight

  959. of God.

  960. It is revisiting your redemption.

  961. It is remembering

  962. that God so delights in you that his

  963. only son died for you.

  964. And that God did not make you earn your

  965. way back to him. He did not make it to

  966. where you have to be good enough or you

  967. have to pay enough or you have to pay

  968. take pilgrimages and go on hikes and

  969. follow sherpas and bow before idols and

  970. offer incense and crawl across shards of

  971. glass and coals of fire. No, he didn't

  972. make it to where the any of the expense

  973. was on you, but all the expense was on

  974. his son. He made it by grace alone

  975. through faith alone in Jesus alone. And

  976. when you trusted him, God set his

  977. affection on you.

  978. And now, no matter what you've done,

  979. even your times of faithlessness, God

  980. remains faithful to you. Paul said, "For

  981. he cannot deny himself.

  982. He remains true. He remains faithful."

  983. You got to remember that the God who is

  984. delighted to bring you out of sin is

  985. just as delighted to bring you in. that

  986. he's going to get you all the way to the

  987. promise that he has in store for you.

  988. The God who delights in you will fight

  989. with you and for you in every battle you

  990. face.

  991. Every enemy you face is as good as

  992. conquered. He will deliver you. He will

  993. provide for you. He will protect you.

  994. And one day, he will heal you once and

  995. for all, never to worry about it again.

  996. He'll bring you all the way home to a

  997. land flowing with milk and honey

  998. where you get to enjoy the fruit of his

  999. rest for all of eternity.

1000. And if the Lord delights in you, and he

  1001. does,

1002. he'll bring you all the way through

1003. whatever you face here and get you all

1004. the way there. So stay faithful.

1005. ground your faith in God's delight.

1006. But the only way to experience God's

1007. delight is through faith in Christ.

1008. Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith, it is

    Hebrews 11:6

1009. impossible to please him." You must

1010. believe Jesus died for your sin and rose

1011. again. You must call on him to be your

1012. savior. But when you do so, God forgives

1013. all your sin. He wipes your slate clean.

1014. He guarantees you victory and eternal

1015. life. He sets his affection on you. Your

1016. salvation, believer, is God's pleasure

1017. and so is bringing you all the way home.

1018. Bringing you all the way to his

1019. presence. So I would encourage you if

1020. you never trusted Christ as your savior

1021. to trust him. You can't have his

1022. affection and his delight without his

1023. son. You must trust in Jesus. But

1024. believer, I want to leave you with this

  1025. encouragement

1026. that whatever it is that you are facing,

1027. the giants, the walls, the health

1028. problems, the financial crisis, the

1029. abandonment of friends and family,

  1030. whatever it might be.

1031. Get your eyes off all of that.

1032. Ground your faith in the fact God

1033. delights in you. and trust that he'll

1034. fight for you, that he'll get you

  1035. through it. Let's pray.

1036. Dear heavenly father, thank you for your

1037. grace and your goodness to us,

1038. your love and affection for us.

1039. Thank you for demonstrating it in the

1040. way Jesus gave his life for us while we

1041. were yet sinners. Christ died for us.

1042. I pray that you would help weary

  1043. believers today,

1044. those who are struggling to exercise

  1045. faith among the faithless.

1046. I pray that tonight they would ground

1047. their faith in your delight, knowing you

1048. love them, knowing you care for them,

1049. knowing you will keep them and sustain

1050. them no matter what evil they may face.

1051. and help us all to rest in the promise

1052. that one day we will stand in your

1053. presence in that holy city, a holy

  1054. people.

1055. Thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ and

1056. thank you for your faithful presence in

1057. our lives. We pray it in Jesus' name.

  1058. Amen.
