  10. >> All right. Hebrews chapter number six.

  11. Hebrews chapter number six.

  12. Lord plugged this little thought in my

  13. mind here few weeks ago. And last week

  14. we dealt with the uh precursor to this

  15. text verses 11-4. Just dabbled a little

  16. bit in verse one of chapter 6. I want to

  17. try to look at chapter 6 verses 1 down

  18. through verse number eight uh today. And

  19. u I was praying what the Lord would have

  20. us to say. This really has been on my

  21. heart the whole time. I knew this is

  22. exactly where I'd be going uh in Sunday

  23. school this morning. But this text, um,

  24. I want you to give me your best

  25. attention this morning. I want try to

  26. expound this the best that I can. And a

  27. lot of different beliefs about this

  28. text. A lot of different things that

  29. been said uh by men a lot smarter than

  30. me, but I just want to follow the

  31. leadership of the Holy Ghost u looking

  32. at this this morning. Hebrews 6 verse

  33. number one. Hebrews 6 verse number one.

  34. The Bible says, "Therefore, leaving the

  35. principles of the doctrine of Christ,

  36. let us go on unto perfection, not laying

  37. again the foundation of repentance from

  38. dead works, and of faith toward God, of

  39. the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying

  40. on of hands, and of resurrection of the

  41. dead, and of eternal judgment. And this

  42. will we do if God permit. For it is

  43. impossible for those who are once

  44. enlightened, and have tasted the

  45. heavenly gift, were made partakers of

  46. the Holy Ghost, have tasted the good

  47. word of God, and the powers of the world

  48. to come, and they shall fall away to

  49. renew them again unto repentance, seeing

  50. they crucify to themselves the Son of

  51. God aresh, and put him to an open shame.

  52. For the earth which drinkketh in the

  53. rain, that cometh off upon it, and

  54. bringeth forth herbs meat for them, by

  55. whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing

  56. from God, but that which beareth thorns

  57. and briars is rejected, and is nigh

  58. under cursing, whose end is to be

  59. burned. Now, Father, I ask humbly that

  60. you would help us as we consider these

  61. verses this morning. I pray you give us

  62. wisdom, discernment, Lord, guard our

  63. lips, Father, that we would say nothing,

  64. Lord, that would uh damage the

  65. credibility of the text, but God, I pray

  66. that we would say everything, Lord, that

  67. would bring to light the truths that are

  68. invested in these verses that we've read

  69. this morning. I pray you'll help us,

  70. fill us with the spirit and accomplish

  71. all your will. We pray it in Jesus name.

  72. Amen. Chapter 6 verse number one is a

  73. continuation of chapter 5 11 down

  74. through verse number 14. And I dealt

  75. with this subject on last week and I've

  76. gotten a lot of response out of this. I

  77. think everybody pretty much forgot what

  78. I preached last Sunday other than what I

  79. said in Sunday school. And so um I want

  80. to deal with this again this morning.

  81. And uh uh this is not my title, but I'll

  82. give you this title this morning if you

  83. want a title. We're not going to put

  84. this title on the podcast or anything

  85. like that, but the title Dwight

  86. Pentecost gives for this text is

  87. spiritual retardation.

  88. And basically, when you study it, that's

  89. what this is. Okay? You notice in verse

  90. number one down through verse number

  91. three, he describes here the state of

  92. the church that he is writing to. Now,

  93. collectively, I don't I would not say

  94. that he is writing to a single church,

  95. but I think he is writing to the church,

  96. uh, the church as a whole, and he's

  97. writing to the Hebrews. We know that

  98. this is the book of Hebrews. He's

  99. writing to the Jews. And when you study

  100. the book of Hebrews, you've got to

  101. remember that you're on Jewish ground.

  102. Now, there's application for you and I

  103. as the believer because it is the New

  104. Testament, but not everything directly

  105. applies. Now I want to point out some of

  106. that here in just a moment. But when you

  107. consider this chapter, chapter 6:es 1

  108. through verse number eight, I want to

  109. give you three subjects here. And what

  110. this is dealing with is the subject of

  111. growth. And verses 1 through3 deals with

  112. faithful growth. Verses 4-6 deals with a

  113. failure to grow. And verses 7 and 8 deal

  114. with the figure of growth. And all of

  115. this is talking about the growth of the

  116. believer. Now, were you stray in this

  117. chapter is when you try to take this

  118. chapter and apply it to somebody who is

  119. not saved. Now, there's a lot of men

  120. that have done that, and there's men

  121. smarter than I am that have done that,

  122. and they make a good case for this text.

  123. But when you consider the text, the

  124. context, it is not speaking to those who

  125. are lost, but it's speaking to those who

  126. are saved. I I want to consider this

  127. first thought here of faithful growth or

  128. future growth. Verses 1 through three.

  129. Look what the Bible says. He says,

  130. "Therefore, leaving the principles of

  131. the doctrine of Christ, notice this, let

  132. us go on unto perfection." Now, I

  133. consider in this text, we've mentioned

  134. already that this is Jewish ground, but

  135. it is applicable to the church. And so,

  136. what he is saying here when he mentions

  137. the principles, he brings up this

  138. thought, the doctrine of Christ. Now,

  139. you know, the doctrine of Christ came in

  140. before Matthew chapter 1, right? The

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  141. doctrine of Christ is all throughout the

  142. Old Testament. It's all throughout

  143. Genesis, you know, all the way through

  144. the law. It's all the way through the

  145. historical books, the prophetical books.

  146. They ultimately spoke that Christ would

  147. come. And when he's speaking of the

  148. doctrine of Christ, you got to remember

  149. these boys didn't have the gospels.

  150. Matter of fact, these some of these men

  151. possibly could have been the ones who

  152. are writing the gospels. And so these

  153. men when he's talking about the

  154. principles of the doctrine of Christ,

  155. he's referring to Old Testament truth

  156. about Jesus, that he would be the

  157. Messiah, that he is the son of David,

  158. that he is the one that faith would

  159. proceed from, that he is the one that

  160. would be the king that would reign upon

  161. the father, the throne of his father

  162. David. And so when he says, therefore,

  163. leaving the principles of the doctrine

  164. of Christ, he's telling them, look, you

  165. need to get off of the baser things that

  166. just tell us about who he is. All right?

  167. Or why he came. Now, you need to learn

  168. about who he is. And notice what he

  169. says. He mentions not only the doctrine

  170. of Christ. He he points out what this

  171. doctrine is. Let me say this. First of

  172. all, he mentions the foundation of

  173. repentance from dead works. That's an

  174. Old Testament truth. John the Baptist

  175. came preaching. Repent. What he say?

  176. Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at

  177. hand. That's an Old Testament truth.

  178. That's the That's the doctrine that the

  179. prophets preached when they Daniel

  180. preached and Isaiah and Jeremiah. What

  181. was their message? Repent. Amen. Get

  182. right with God. And so there's the

  183. doctrine of repentance. There's also the

  184. doctrine of condemnation in verse number

  185. two, resurrection of the dead and of

  186. eternal judgment. And so this has to do

  187. with the judgment of the wicked. That

  188. too is an Old Testament doctrine that

  189. those who would not follow the ways, the

  190. truths of the word of God, they would be

  191. judged eternally. And then there is the

  192. doctrine of repentance and faith. Verse

  193. number verse number one again repentance

  194. from dead works and of faith toward God.

  195. Of course, we know that's Old Testament

  196. as well. Abraham was the father of the

  197. faith. This there's the doctrine of

  198. baptisms. That's simply the ceremonies,

  199. the doctrines of ceremonies of laying on

  200. of hands. That is the ministry of the

  201. saints. You consider the doctrine of

  202. laying on of hands. What that was? That

  203. was a Jewish thing. The only the Jews

  204. received the Holy Ghost by laying on of

  205. hands. Okay? And you say, "What's the

  206. point of all that, preacher?" Well,

  207. Paul, the writer of Hebrews, is trying

  208. to tell them, "Hey, you need to get past

  209. this stuff." And the application to you

  210. and I today is it's good to be saved,

  211. but you need to learn more about the

  212. Christian life than just being saved.

  213. You need to know more than just

  214. repentance and faith. You need to know

  215. more than just that there is a hell and

  216. there's a heaven. You need to know more

  217. after you get saved. It's never meant

  218. that you just know the baser things.

  219. John 3:16 should not be the only verse

    John 3:16

  220. that you're acquainted with. Amen.

  221. >> And so he's telling them it's time to go

  222. forward. What are they going forward

  223. from? The doctrine of Christ. Those

  224. elementary truths as we mentioned on

  225. last week. But then he mentions not only

  226. the doctrine of Christ, but there is a

  227. departure in verse number one. And

  228. listen the way I word this, okay? I put

  229. this this way for a reason. There's a

  230. departure not from Christ, but unto

  231. Christ. You see, those baser things will

  232. hold you back. Okay? If you are

  233. constantly dwelling in the state of

  234. salvation and lost heaven and hell, if

  235. you are living in that that with that

  236. doubt, with that fear in your mind or

  237. constantly rehearsing the events, the

  238. baser things of Christianity, you will

  239. never know the blessing of knowing

  240. Jesus. Listen to how he describes it in

  241. verse one. He says, "Therefore, leaving

  242. the principles of the doctrine of

  243. Christ, let us go on unto what?

  244. Perfection." Now, just to put this on

  245. the outset, I want to give you some

  246. stuff about that phrase, but to put this

  247. on the outset, who's the only perfect

  248. man that ever lived? Christ. Amen. He

  249. was a full maturity. The Bible says in

  250. Hebrews, I believe it's chapter 3 or 4

  251. says that he was made perfect. He was

  252. made complete through sufferings. And

  253. so, the only man that's ever lived,

  254. complete God, complete man, and complete

  255. in life is Jesus Christ. And so, he is

  256. the example. That's why the end of the

  257. book tells us in chapter 12 that we're

  258. to look unto him. Amen. Look unto Jesus,

  259. the author and finisher of our faith. So

  260. what does he mean when he says, "Let us

  261. go on unto perfection." Well, I remind

  262. you this. First of all, I told you this

  263. is not to unbelievers. You say, "How is

  264. that?" Well, notice the collectiveness

  265. that's mentioned in in that phrase. What

  266. does he say? Those first two words, let

  267. us let us. The writer is describing

  268. himself inspired by the Holy Ghost. He

  269. says there's a collective group. There

  270. is a design that also tells us that the

  271. church, amen, was is is pointed out

  272. here. And that's where we find the text

  273. in the book of Hebrews says to forsake

  274. not the assembling of yourselves

  275. together. There's a collective growth

  276. that's supposed to take place.

  277. >> Amen. So it's collective. Not only that,

  278. it's not only collective, but it's

  279. progressive. Look what he says in verse

  280. one. Let us what? Go on.

  281. You know what the biggest problem we

  282. have in the church world in this day and

  283. time is people don't want to go forward.

  284. >> Right?

  285. >> Well, we've always done it this way.

  286. We've always done that. We've always had

  287. that event. We've always had done this.

  288. We've always said that. This has been

  289. the way. It's always been. And if you

  290. want to hinder a church from growing,

  291. that's how you do it.

  292. >> Amen. I'm not talking about

  293. progressivism talking about moving in uh

  294. to the modernistic approach. I'm talking

  295. about going forward for God. He says,

  296. "Let us go on." What are we going on

  297. unto? Well, there is a collective. It's

  298. progressive, but it's also conclusive.

  299. Look what he says. Let us go on unto

  300. perfection. You see, there's a goal in

  301. mind. If you do not have a goal in mind

  302. in your Christian life, you will not

  303. accomplish anything.

  304. >> If I, as the pastor, do not have a goal

  305. in mind for this church, this church

  306. will not go forward. Daddy, if you do

  307. not have a goal in mind for your

  308. marriage or for your family, if you've

  309. not got a mark that you're pressing

  310. towards, amen, you will not accomplish

  311. anything.

  312. >> Amen. It works that way in all of life.

  313. There has to be a a purpose. Amen. But

  314. there also in that purpose, there's a

  315. plan that's laid forth. He says, first

  316. of all, this plan is that we've got to

  317. let go of some things, right?

  318. >> He says verse one, leaving the

  319. principles. There's some things that

  320. we've got to move on from. You need to

  321. learn more about Christ than just the

  322. fact that he he died and was buried and

  323. rose again. And that is the most

  324. precious truth. It's the truth that

  325. won't makes us want to learn everything

  326. else about him. Amen.

  327. >> But we ought to know more than that.

  328. Amen. Notice this. We we consider this

  329. this reference this let us go on unto

  330. perfection. Arthur Pink said this. He

  331. said it is a reference to the

  332. apprehension of the divine revelation of

  333. the full glory of Christ in his person,

  334. his perfections and his position.

  335. [clears throat] It is an apprehension.

  336. That apprehension means to take hold of.

  337. Let us go on unto. We have a we have a

  338. plan. We have a purpose. We're headed

  339. somewhere. Amen.

  340. >> So notice this. You consider this

  341. departure unto Christ. Consider this.

  342. Thirdly, I'm still talking about this

  343. faithful growth here. We consider the

  344. doctrine, the departure. Now consider

  345. the decision in verse number three. And

  346. I find this interesting. Okay, this is

  347. going to lead up to what we deal with

  348. next. Notice verse three. And this will

  349. we do if God permit. Now I want you to

  350. think about this right here. All right,

  351. with me for just a minute. There are

  352. presented to us plenteous opportunities

  353. for Christian growth.

  354. I want to say it again. There are

  355. presented to us, each and every one of

  356. us, plenteous opportunities for

  357. Christian growth. But if we continually

  358. dismiss them, Christ is not obligated to

  359. allow us to continue.

  360. >> Right?

  361. >> In other words, he will let us stay a

  362. baby if that's what we want.

  363. >> Right?

  364. >> And I've said this a thousand times from

  365. this pull pit, but you you are what you

  366. want to be at this present moment.

  367. >> Right?

  368. If you want to go forward for Christ,

  369. you say, "Preacher, well, I'm not what I

  370. want to be." Well, that means you're

  371. pressing forward. Amen. You've got a

  372. plan. You got a purpose in mind. There's

  373. an end goal. There's a vision that you

  374. have for your life. But if you are

  375. satisfied with what you are right now,

  376. you will never be more than who you are

  377. in this moment.

  378. >> Right?

  379. >> And I want to remind you this, okay?

  380. Everything that we have in our life

  381. imparted to us by Christ.

  382. >> Right? The opportunity to grow is given

  383. to us by Christ. I mean, what I'm trying

  384. to say is is that you cannot grow apart

  385. from the impartation of wisdom

  386. >> by Jesus. You do not learn truth on your

  387. own.

  388. >> The most welleducated man earthly in the

  389. scriptures has not even an iota of the

  390. truth that a saved man would learn in

  391. five minutes of studying his Bible.

  392. >> Good.

  393. >> Because this book is not carnally read.

  394. It's not carnally studied. It's

  395. spiritually discerned. And so the

  396. decision here is pointed out. Verse

  397. three, and this will we do if God

  398. permit. Now, what does that mean? Well,

  399. if you have decided so long,

  400. in other words, put it this way. If you

  401. have refused the truth of God's word so

  402. long as a child of God, God is not

  403. obligated to allow you to grow anymore.

  404. >> Right?

  405. >> Now, I'll be honest with you, that's

  406. hard to hear. But you consider that when

  407. you look at the rest of this text, it's

  408. very true. When you consider this

  409. thought now, it is left up to him. I'll

  410. say right now, if you have a desire to

  411. know truth, he wants you to know him.

  412. Amen. Paul said that I may know him.

  413. That is the desire that's on the heart

  414. of every believer. But it is possible

  415. for a saved child of God to get to a

  416. place where they are stagnant. They are

  417. complacent. That they have no desire to

  418. know anything about Christ. What you're

  419. going to see here in this text is what

  420. that describes. Now, we consider here

  421. the faithful growth. What's going to

  422. happen? And it's all hinging on this uh

  423. the truth of Christ's decision if he

  424. allows us to grow. Now, I want to remind

  425. you he he's not he's not going to

  426. withhold you from growth if you desire

  427. that. Okay? But the truth of this text

  428. reveals, all right, when a person

  429. conscientiously chooses to walk away

  430. from Christ, Christ is not obligated to

  431. draw them back.

  432. Notice the text. We consider this

  433. faithful growth. But now consider the

  434. failure to grow. In verses four- six,

  435. notice this verse four. For it is

  436. impossible for those who are once

  437. enlightened. That four connects verse

  438. number three and the phrases before to

  439. this verse. Verse four. For it is

  440. impossible for those who are once

  441. enlightened, and have tasted of the

  442. heavenly gift, and were made partakers

  443. of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the

  444. good word of God, and the powers of the

  445. world to come, if they shall fall away,

  446. to renew them again unto repentance,

  447. seeing they crucify to themselves the

  448. son of God aresh, and put him to an open

  449. shade. Now, what does all this mean?

  450. When you consider this thought, the

  451. failure to grow, you got to look at this

  452. phrase, how it's worded in verse number

  453. four. Look what he says. For it is

  454. impossible for those who are once

  455. enlightened. All right, so there's

  456. obviously an impossibility that's stated

  457. here in verse number four. What is the

  458. impossibility if you connect the phrase

  459. verse four and verse six, for it is

  460. impossible for those who are once

  461. enlightened? Verse six, if they shall

  462. fall away to remove them again unto

  463. repentance. Now verses four and five the

  464. rest of that he describes this right

  465. here and I'll give you these three

  466. thoughts about this failure to grow.

  467. Number one there are the wonders that

  468. are experienced in this these verses.

  469. Notice verse four who are once

  470. enlightened have tasted of the heavenly

  471. gift were made partakers of the Holy

  472. Ghost and have tasted the good word of

  473. God and the powers of the world to come.

  474. Now if you consider all of that there

  475. are some writers that say that this man

  476. described in verses four and five is not

  477. saved. But I do not believe that's

  478. possible. Number one, for this reason.

  479. You see in verse four, if it was just if

  480. it only said enlightened, verse number

  481. four, if it only said that this soul has

  482. been illuminated, that in other words,

  483. that conviction has set in and showed

  484. them that they were lost. But you

  485. understand it doesn't stop there. Look

  486. what he says. And have tasted of the

  487. heavenly gift.

  488. Tasted of the heavenly gift. Now, let me

  489. just let me just say this. All right.

  490. What a salvation.

  491. For by grace are you saved through faith

  492. that not all yourselves. It's the gift

  493. of God, not of works, lest any man

  494. should boast. That's under inspiration

  495. of the spirit of God. There it says the

  496. heavenly gift.

  497. >> Tasted of it. You're not going to taste

  498. of salvation and not possess it. Amen.

  499. >> So if tasted of the heavenly gift and

  500. were made partakers of what? Of the Holy

  501. Ghost. What does the book of Romans say?

  502. If any man have not the spirit of

  503. Christ, he's none of his. So if he's

  504. been made partaker of the Holy Ghost,

  505. he's saved. Verse five, it goes on from

  506. there. And have tasted the good word of

  507. God. What have we just said tonight this

  508. morning? That if a man knows the knows

  509. the scriptures, he has to have the

  510. spirit of God.

  511. >> He has to be saved. You will not receive

  512. the word of God lost. And the powers of

  513. the world to come, this is literally the

  514. progression of salvation. And that

  515. powers of the world to come means the

  516. presence of God manifested

  517. on this earth. The powers of the world

  518. to come. You can't experience the

  519. presence of God as a lost man,

  520. >> right?

  521. >> You can in conviction,

  522. >> but it doesn't go beyond that. And so, I

  523. think we can all agree he's talking to

  524. the saved person, isn't he? Because of

  525. the wonders that are experienced.

  526. There's salvation. There's the spirit's

  527. presence. There's the Savior's power.

  528. There's the sanctification of the

  529. spirit. All of these things are

  530. experiences of a child of God. But

  531. notice verse six. Look what your Bible

  532. says. If they shall fall away to renew

  533. them again unto repentance. Now this

  534. man's obviously been saved according to

  535. everything that's in these verses. So if

  536. the Bible says in verse six, if they

  537. shall fall away. So number one, this

  538. points out that it is possible. Okay?

  539. don't believe this crowd that says once

  540. you get saved you'll never sin again.

  541. Okay?

  542. >> And and there's some that even say in

  543. this day, well, you'll sin, but it won't

  544. be willful sin. But I got a problem with

  545. that. Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  546. says, hey, he said the good that I

  547. would. He said I do not. He said the bad

  548. that I would not, it's that I do. Amen.

  549. >> And if the Apostle Paul had that problem

  550. with willful sin, you and I are going to

  551. have that problem.

  552. >> And so here he says, if they shall fall

  553. away, there's the possibility here. But

  554. what this is, this shows the pattern in

  555. verse six. If they shall fall away. Now,

  556. this does not mean, this is not just a

  557. casual sin. This is not something

  558. that's, you know, well, I I I got

  559. tempted, I slipped up and failed. No,

  560. that's not what this is. Where it says

  561. if they shall fall away, that means a

  562. conscientious choice to walk away.

  563. You say, "Preacher, but I thought that

  564. someone who's saved can't consciously

  565. choose to walk away." Well, let me just

  566. remind you again. You remember about

  567. Peter?

  568. What about David? You say, "Preacher,

  569. but that's Old Testament. They didn't

  570. have the spirit of God." I know that.

  571. But they were saved,

  572. >> right?

  573. >> Amen. Well, it's not the same economy,

  574. preacher. But did they go to heaven when

  575. they died?

  576. >> Right.

  577. >> Let me ask you something. All right.

  578. When you consider this truth, if you if

  579. man is a free moral agent when he gets

  580. saved, all right, if you have to choose

  581. Christ in order to be saved and then

  582. after you get saved, you have to choose

  583. to live for Christ, would it not be

  584. possible that you could do anything

  585. afterward

  586. >> that you could do before?

  587. And he says this, if they shall fall

  588. away. So we consider the wonders

  589. expressed, but then there is the we the

  590. wonders experienced in verses four and

  591. five. Then there is this will that's

  592. expressed. That phrase fall away means a

  593. conscious premeditated choice or

  594. decision to turn back. Now the writer of

  595. Hebrews says this so many times. Notice

  596. chapter number 10.

  597. Chapter number 10

  598. and the last verse verse 38.

  599. Chapter 10 verse 38 and 39.

  600. The Bible says, "Now the just shall live

  601. by faith, but if any man draw back, my

  602. soul shall have no pleasure in him."

  603. Verse 39, "But we are not of them who

  604. draw back unto predition, but of them

  605. that believe to the saving of the soul."

  606. Now, the terminology that's going to be

  607. used in this text is the same

  608. terminology that's going to be used

  609. there in chapter number 10. You you

  610. consider here it's mentioned that it's

  611. impossible to renew them again to

  612. repentance. Verse 8 says that they are

  613. nigh unto cursing whose end is to be

  614. burned. And I submit to you this is not

  615. talking about hell. Okay? Because this

  616. would contradict the doctrine of

  617. salvation.

  618. >> If you could lose your salvation, amen,

  619. that just damages everything about who

  620. Christ is and what Christ did for us.

  621. And so what is he talking about? Well,

  622. he says if they shall fall away, if they

  623. willfully turn away, what happens? Verse

  624. six, it's impossible to renew them again

  625. unto repentance, seeing them c seeing

  626. they crucify to themselves the son of

  627. God aresh and put him to an open shame.

  628. So there's the wonders that's

  629. experienced here by this saved man.

  630. There's the will that's expressed here

  631. by this saved man. But there's a work

  632. that's inhibited in his life because he

  633. is saved. What is that work? Look what

  634. it says. To renew them again unto

  635. repentance. Now notice what's not said

  636. in this verse. It does not say that it's

  637. impossible for this man to repent.

  638. Notice the verse is if they shall fall

  639. away to renew them again unto

  640. repentance. So repentance here is not an

  641. action but it's a state. You say what's

  642. the state? Well repentance when it takes

  643. place when you get saved. What is that?

  644. It's repentance and faith. At salvation

  645. the moment of salvation it is a state of

  646. repentance. And what do you spend the

  647. rest of your life doing as a child of

  648. God? the act of repenting. And so when

  649. he says it's impossible to renew them

  650. again unto repentance, he is saying that

  651. it's impossible for them to experience

  652. after they have willfully walked away

  653. from Christ after they have chosen by

  654. their own decision to walk away from

  655. Jesus. It's impossible for them to come

  656. back and be saved be experience that

  657. same repentance again.

  658. >> What does that bar them from? It bars

  659. them from blessing.

  660. Notice it in the text. Verse six. Seeing

  661. they crucify to themselves the son of

  662. God aresh and put him to an open shame.

  663. You say, "What does that mean,

  664. preacher?" Well, if somebody walks away

  665. and denounces the faith, a child of God

  666. walks away and denounces the faith, you

  667. know what's going to happen if they try

  668. to come back? You know what they're

  669. doing? If they have openly denounced

  670. what they believed in, and it can be

  671. done. Say, "How is that?" Well, Peter

  672. denied the Lord.

  673. >> Said, "I know not the man." And you know

  674. what? Peter had to deal with the

  675. repercussions of that decision when he

  676. decided to come back. He struggled for

  677. many years because of that. Of course,

  678. we know when the spirit showed up, amen,

  679. the work, all of that was worked out.

  680. But what I'm saying is is this. There

  681. were those that looked at him and said,

  682. "Well, you denied him one time."

  683. >> If you walk away and denounce everything

  684. you say, you don't believe any of that.

  685. You know what you're doing? You're

  686. hanging Christ on that cross again,

  687. >> right?

  688. >> When you try to come back. Now, I want

  689. to make this point and we'll move on

  690. here. This failure to what h what what

  691. brings this about is a failure to grow.

  692. And it's like brother Jimmy said it and

  693. it's the best selectment you'll ever

  694. hear on Christian growth. Christian

  695. growth is like paddling up a stream.

  696. You're either paddling against the

  697. current or you're floating with it.

  698. >> And so when you refuse to grow, what are

  699. you doing? You are allowing the world,

  700. the currents of this world, the flesh,

  701. the devil, and sin to take you away. And

  702. because of that, what happens is when

  703. you try to get back right again, the

  704. first thing that you're going to do is

  705. try to get saved again

  706. when you've been out of the will of God

  707. for so many years. Because this is what

  708. what's going to happen to you. You're

  709. going to think, "Well, if I did all

  710. that, there wouldn't know way I was

  711. really saved anyway."

  712. >> You say, "Where's a where's an

  713. illustration of this?" Well, the the

  714. most prominent illustration I think of

  715. is in the book of Numbers.

  716. Numbers chapter number

  717. 20.

  718. The Bible says in numbers 20 verse

  719. number 7.

  720. And the Lord spake unto Moses saying,

  721. "Take the rod and gather thou the

  722. assembly together, thou and Aaron thy

  723. brethren, and speak ye unto the rock

  724. before their eyes, and it shall give

  725. forth his water, and thou shalt bring

  726. forth to them water out of the rock. So

  727. shalt thou give the congregation, and

  728. their beast drink." And Moses took the

  729. rod from before the Lord, as he

  730. commanded him. And Moses and Aaron

  731. gathered the congregation together

  732. before the rock. And he said unto them,

  733. "Hear now, you rebels, must we fetch you

  734. water out of this rock." And Moses

  735. lifted up his hand, and with his rod he

  736. smoked the rock twice, and the water

  737. came out abundantly, and the

  738. congregation drank, and their beast

  739. also. And the Lord spake unto Moses and

  740. Aaron. Notice this, because ye believe

  741. me not to sanctify me in the eyes of the

  742. children of Israel. Therefore, ye shall

  743. not bring this congregation into the

  744. land which I have given them. This is

  745. the water of Marabah because the

  746. children of Israel strove with the Lord

  747. and he was sanctified in them. Now, what

  748. does this mean? Well, simply put, that

  749. rod is a type of judgment.

  750. And when God told Moses, he said, "Look,

  751. you take your rod." He didn't tell him

  752. to smite the rock, but he said, "You

  753. speak to the rock." That rod represented

  754. judgment. And so, that rock represents

  755. Jesus Christ. And so, when Moses came

  756. here and God told him to speak to the

  757. rock, it's a symbol of fellowship. Well,

  758. Moses comes up in here and he's angry,

  759. ain't he? He's mad. The children of

  760. Israel, look at that in the text. Verse

  761. number verse number uh verse number 10.

  762. Moses Aaron gathered the congregation

  763. together for before the rock. And he

  764. said to them, "Here now, you rebels,

  765. must we fetch you water out of this

  766. rot," he's angry. Okay? And out of this,

  767. instead of doing what God told him to do

  768. and speaking to the rock, which is a

  769. type of fellowship, he takes the rod and

  770. smites it not once but twice.

  771. You say, "What is the representation?"

  772. Well, he took the judgment

  773. and smites the rock which represents

  774. Christ. Now, what did Jesus do once?

  775. The cross.

  776. >> He suffered the judgment of God once.

  777. And so in this text, when the Bible says

  778. it's impossible to renew them unto

  779. repentance, what you're doing is when

  780. you when you are trying to make another

  781. profession of faith because of the sin,

  782. because you willfully walked away from

  783. Jesus, when you try to come back, here's

  784. what happens. You smite the rock again

  785. when you needed to just speak to it.

  786. You're

  787. >> right.

  788. >> Because fellowship was broken, but there

  789. wasn't a relationship that was gone.

  790. >> Right?

  791. >> Okay. This is what happens when you walk

  792. away from the word of God. And and the

  793. writer said, "Right, it's spiritual

  794. retardation. So, refuse to grow is what

  795. it is. If you refuse to grow, this is

  796. inevitably where you'll find yourself."

  797. You say, "Preacher, well, what's the

  798. truth to the Jews here?" Well, when he's

  799. talking to these Jews, okay, I've given

  800. you the application. Now, here's the

  801. Jewish truth. You remember these Jews

  802. here in this text? It says, "If they

  803. shall fall away." So, if these Jews

  804. willfully decide that they're going to

  805. go back to Judaism, you know what

  806. they're doing? And if they turn around

  807. and come back from that again, they're

  808. saying, "Well, Christ is going to have

  809. to be crucified again." If they turn

  810. around and go back to Judaism, they're

  811. agreeing with the people that crucified

  812. Christ.

  813. >> Right?

  814. >> If you turn around and walk away from

  815. the faith as a believer, you know what

  816. you're doing? You're agreeing with the

  817. world that crucified Jesus.

  818. >> Right?

  819. >> Amen. That's right. Notice this third

  820. one. I'm done. We consider the fa the

  821. faithful growth, the failure to grow.

  822. Here, the foundation cannot be laid

  823. again. The experience of newness and

  824. salvation can only be experienced once.

  825. And I say, "Thank God for that."

  826. Hallelujah. Man, I'm thankful. I ain't

  827. got to worry about whether I'm saved

  828. today and lost tomorrow. Amen.

  829. Hallelujah. I feel bad for the

  830. Pentecostals. Amen. That must be

  831. miserable. Well, I wonder if I got it

  832. today. I wonder if the sin that I

  833. committed was bad enough to make, you

  834. know, just crazy what it is. It's not

  835. scriptural. Notice this. Thirdly, the

  836. figure of growth. Verses seven and

  837. eight. quickly. For the earth which

  838. drinkketh in the rain that cometh off

  839. upon it bringeth forth herbs meek for

  840. them by whom it is dressed receiveth

  841. blessing from God. But that which

  842. beareth thorns and briars is rejected

  843. and is nine to cursing whose end is to

  844. be burned. So there is number one here

  845. the figure of this growth is mentioned.

  846. He pictures the earth. There's the earth

  847. the ground which drinkketh in the rain

  848. that cometh off upon it and bringeth

  849. forth herbs meat for them by whom it is

  850. dressed. He's speaking here first of all

  851. the feeling God sends the rain. He fills

  852. the earth uh with the rain. He sends it

  853. upon the just and the unjust. The Bible

  854. says and so this earth drinkketh of the

  855. rain that cometh. It's the a type of the

  856. blessing of God. Then there's the

  857. fruitfulness in verse seven. It bringeth

  858. forth herbs meat for them by whom it is

  859. dressed because of the rain. That

  860. fruitful ground bringeth forth a

  861. productiveness for those to supply the

  862. need of those that dress that ground.

  863. And then it shows the faithfulness of

  864. God in verse seven. It receiveth

  865. blessing from God. That rain that comes

  866. upon it makes it fruitful and because of

  867. that God is faithful under that fruitful

  868. ground. But in verse number eight, he

  869. says that which beareth thorns and

  870. briars is rejected and is not under curs

  871. and whose end is to be burned. Now, this

  872. is not speaking here once again of those

  873. who are saved and then lose it or those

  874. who are never saved and then they're

  875. judged because of their, you know, they

  876. were close to God in a in a sense. It's

  877. not that's not what this means.

  878. Basically, what this is saying is is

  879. that our works at the end of our life

  880. are going to be judged. Now, that's a

  881. scriptural thought, isn't it? If you are

  882. fruitful, you're going to have something

  883. to lay at the feet of Jesus.

  884. >> But if you are unfruitful, those things

  885. are going to be what? burned.

  886. >> They're going to be burned. You say,

  887. "Preacher, well, how is that?" Well,

  888. turn this turn to this text with me and

  889. I'll be done. 1 Corinthians 3. 1

    1 Corinthians 3:1

  890. Corinthians 3:1. Find it interesting the

  891. terminology is used in this text. 1

  892. Corinthians 3 and 11. For other

  893. foundation can no man lay than that that

  894. is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now,

  895. he's mentioned that foundation again.

  896. What does he said in verse number one of

  897. chapter 6? He said, "Not laying again

  898. the foundation." This is a foundational

  899. problem.

  900. >> Okay, notice it again in the text. Verse

  901. 12. Now if any man build upon this

  902. foundation gold, silver, precious

  903. stones, wood, hay, stubble, every man's

  904. work shall be made manifest. For the day

  905. shall declare it, because it shall be

  906. revealed by what? Fire. And the fire

  907. shall tr try every man's work of what

  908. sort it is. If any man's work abide

  909. which he had built thereupon, he shall

  910. receive a word reward. If any man's work

  911. shall be burned, he shall suffer loss.

  912. But he himself, notice this, shall be

  913. saved. Yet so as by fire.

  914. Now what's what's the parallel here?

  915. Well, Paul is dealing with a

  916. foundational issue. When we are

  917. constantly

  918. trying to relay the foundational

  919. doctrines of who Christ is, you know

  920. what? We're never going to be able to

  921. have a building. You're

  922. >> right.

  923. >> And so, you know what you're left with

  924. in a figurative image? You're left with

  925. a pile of building supplies sitting on

  926. the side that one of these days you're

  927. going to load up and walk through the

  928. fire with it and it's all going to burn

  929. up,

  930. >> right?

  931. >> Because you were continually working on

  932. a foundation that's already been laid.

  933. I think that's a very vivid image, don't

  934. you?

  935. >> We have been given supplies. Look what

  936. he says. For the earth which drinkketh

  937. in the rain that cometh off upon it. We

  938. are, our heart is the ground. Okay?

  939. God's given us that. He's given us the

  940. rain to make that grow. And it's up to

  941. us to be fruitful,

  942. >> right?

  943. >> Those who are fruitful are blessed. He

  944. says in verse seven, verse number eight,

  945. those who are unfruitful, look what he

  946. says. And and I love the King James

  947. Bible, man. I'm telling you, it's it's

  948. perfect. Look what he says. He doesn't

  949. say they are cursed, but look what he

  950. says in verse eight. They're nigh unto

  951. cursing.

  952. It's near.

  953. They can't be cursed. Amen.

  954. >> But they're near to it. Why would a

  955. child of God want to live near cursing?

  956. >> Amen.

  957. >> You think about that. When you are

  958. living in sin willfully, you know what?

  959. You're living near cursing.

  960. >> It's sad that there'll be people who are

  961. saved that will walk along the canyon to

  962. fall off into hell their entire life.

  963. Walk right along the edge. And the

  964. providence, the blessing of God's the

  965. only thing going to keep them out

  966. because they're saved and sealed. But

  967. they're going to live their life walking

  968. along that edge.

  969. >> Nigh under cursing whose end is to be

  970. burned. Everything that you get in that

  971. type of lifestyle is just going to go

  972. >> right

  973. >> and you're going to have absolutely

  974. nothing to lay at the feet of Jesus. So,

  975. I don't know about you, but I want to

  976. grow.

  977. >> Amen. Peter said it best in his epistle.

  978. He said, "But grow in grace and in the
