  6. with your friends. Now, let's join

  7. Pastor Charlie Branch with a word from

  8. God.

  9. All right. If you will take your Bible,

  10. turn with me to the book of Ephesians.

  11. Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  12. And uh just with the events,

  13. everything's been going on. Wedding

  14. yesterday, marriage conference coming

  15. up. I just had it on my mind. It was

  16. actually the next place we was going to

  17. go in Sunday school. And so we're going

  18. to look here at that this morning.

  19. Ephesians chapter 5. And we'll begin

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  20. reading in verse number 22.

  21. And uh

  22. some very very deep truths in this. I

  23. think a lot of misconceptions been made

  24. about these verses. Um a lot of things

  25. have been said uh concerning the ranks

  26. of men and women and their different uh

  27. authorities that they have. Uh that's

  28. caused some people to be hurt over that.

  29. And I'm not saying in the church, but

  30. I'm just saying collectively. Um, bad

  31. teaching brings about trouble,

  32. >> right?

  33. >> And, uh, if you need if you don't

  34. rightly divide the Bible, um, you're

  35. going to be in a mess. And so, I want to

  36. try to do that this morning. Not going

  37. to try I'm try going to try not to get

  38. too u deep into this this morning. Just

  39. being Sunday school, I want to give you

  40. the truths of it here. What Lord's put

  41. on my heart and u, I'm trying to reel

  42. myself in, I guess you would say. I like

  43. I get in this stuff and I I will uh I

  44. kind of like to scuba dive sometimes and

  45. just swim around a little bit. But uh uh

  46. I want to make sure that we're uh giving

  47. you something that'll be beneficial to

  48. you. And uh you know there's a lot of

  49. men sometimes they get up and they

  50. stroke their ego just by telling you how

  51. much they know and how big words they

  52. can use when they talk. And I don't ever

  53. want to be guilty of that. And I want to

  54. make sure it's understandable. And uh I

  55. think it was Billy Kelly said that uh

  56. God he's not uh he's not one of those

  57. kind of people that puts the cookie jar

  58. on the top shelf where the young onions

  59. can't get to it, but he puts it on the

  60. bottom. Amen. And I want to make sure we

  61. do that and make sure it's

  62. understandable. And uh if you don't get

  63. anything out of it, I've not done my

  64. job. And I don't want to be a sounding

  65. brass and a tinkling symbol. So you pray

  66. for me, the Lord will help me. Ephesians

  67. 5 verse number 20. Let's look verse

  68. number uh verse number 18. and just look

  69. back there. Been several weeks since we

  70. dealt with this. I'll review a little

  71. bit and then we'll go forward here in

  72. the text. Ephesians 5 verse number 18.

  73. The Bible says, "And be not drunk with

  74. wine wherein is excess, but be filled

  75. with the spirit. Speak to yourselves in

  76. psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

  77. singing and making melody in your heart

  78. to the Lord, giving thanks always for

  79. all things unto God and the Father in

  80. the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  81. submitting yourselves one to another in

  82. the fear of God. Wives, submit

  83. yourselves unto your own husbands as

  84. unto the Lord. For the husband is the

  85. head of the wife, even as Christ is the

  86. head of the church, and he is the savior

  87. of the body. Therefore, as the church is

  88. subject unto Christ, so let the wives be

  89. to their own husbands in everything.

  90. Husbands, love your wives, even as

  91. Christ also loved the church and gave

  92. himself for it, that he might sanctify

  93. and cleanse it with the washing of water

  94. by the word, that he might present it to

  95. himself a glorious church, not having

  96. spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but

  97. that it should be holy and without

  98. blemish.

  99. So ought men to love their wives as

  100. their own bodies. He that loveth his

  101. wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet

  102. hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and

  103. cherisheth it, even as the Lord the

  104. church. For we are members of his body,

  105. of his flesh, and of his bones. For this

  106. cause shall a man leave his father and

  107. mother, shall be joined unto his wife,

  108. and they too shall be one flesh. This is

  109. a great mystery, but I speak concerning

  110. Christ in the church. Nevertheless, let

  111. every one of you in particular so love

  112. his wife even as himself and the wife

  113. see that she reverence her husband.

  114. Father, thank you for this time that

  115. we've gathered around the word of God.

  116. Thank you for uh the truth that's

  117. invested here. And Lord, this is

  118. life-changing stuff if we'll apply it.

  119. And so God, I pray, Father, that you

  120. will help us to be obedient to you. um

  121. Lord, not consider uh our flesh this

  122. morning, but God, that we would

  123. surrender our flesh and submit to the

  124. will of God, uh your design, your

  125. purpose. You orchestrated it this way

  126. for a reason. And so, God, I pray you

  127. help us to represent you well. And God,

  128. I ask you that you would give us uh eyes

  129. of wisdom, spiritual eyes to see the

  130. truths that are invested here today.

  131. Well, thank you for what you do because

  132. you're worthy of all glory and honor and

  133. power. And we ask you to help us now. We

  134. ask it in Jesus name. Amen.

  135. this text this morning. Uh, of course,

  136. it's been attacked by the world in which

  137. we live. They don't like this, uh, this

  138. illustration that's used here. But I

  139. tell you what, it's precious to me. And

  140. the reason I say that is is because it

  141. lets me know about my standing with

  142. Christ. And I've learned some more about

  143. that since my wife and I have been

  144. married. Going on be going on five

  145. years, March the 6th, we we've been

  146. married. and uh I've learned a little

  147. bit uh more about the love of Christ for

  148. myself uh being married to her and it's

  149. taught me some things about that and I'm

  150. not here to give you my own example but

  151. I'll say this experience brings about

  152. some help uh for understanding of the

  153. scripture and I was reading this uh this

  154. morning just looking back over my notes

  155. here thinking about this text and

  156. there's no coincidence that this is

  157. connected to spirituality in this text

  158. you notice what he leads up to here in

  159. the text he mentions being filled with

  160. the spirit. In verse number 18, he gives

  161. them the instructions of how to be

  162. filled with the spirit in verses 19 down

  163. through verse number 21. And then he's

  164. further giving those instructions. And

  165. so this is really this morning. This is

  166. not an option. It's it's a requirement.

  167. And I was reading this, thinking about

  168. this text and where I wanted to go with

  169. this. I want to give you the reasoning

  170. behind this. Okay? And uh there has been

  171. a change. All right? The original order

  172. between man and woman in the garden was

  173. there was an equal authority that was

  174. present there. Now I I want to deal with

  175. that here for just a minute. And I want

  176. to say this, okay? Man is not greater

  177. than woman.

  178. >> Right?

  179. >> Woman is not greater than man.

  180. >> We are created equal in the Lord Jesus

  181. Christ. There's neither male nor female,

  182. bond nor free. And you know the list in

  183. there. All those that come to Christ in

  184. salvation, they are the children of God

  185. by faith. And so it's not a question of

  186. equality. That's what the world wants to

  187. make it a question of, but that's not

  188. what the question is here. Um, it's a

  189. question of submission and authority and

  190. protection is what it is. And I notice

  191. in this text, verse number 21, I pointed

  192. this out last time that he he leads off

  193. in verse 21, dealing with universal

  194. submission. Notice that verse 21,

  195. submitting yourselves one to another in

  196. the fear of God. And I made this

  197. statement. And I said that you'll never

  198. submit to each other until you're

  199. submitted to God. Because you notice uh

  200. the terminology that's used in this

  201. text. The only way that you could submit

  202. to another person is in submission to

  203. the Lord. Now you say, "Well, what does

  204. that mean?" Well, that means if you're

  205. submitted to the Lord, the only time

  206. you'll be commanded to submit to another

  207. person is when it's proper,

  208. >> right?

  209. >> And I want to deal with that here in

  210. just a minute in the marriage

  211. relationship. Okay? And men have taken

  212. this out of context and they deal with

  213. this and say that, you know, there's a

  214. uh they have a supremacy about them that

  215. they're to be in authority constantly.

  216. But that's not the truth. Okay? There

  217. are things that disqualify a man from

  218. his authority. Just like a pastor, if he

  219. was to commit a sin uh that causes him

  220. to lose lose his headship, that

  221. authority would be removed from him.

  222. Well, if a husband does that very same

  223. thing, his authority is removed. If a

  224. husband becomes drunk, full of alcohol,

  225. his wife is not commanded to obey his

  226. authority.

  227. >> Right?

  228. >> I know we don't like that, but that's

  229. the truth. Okay?

  230. >> When there's intoxication, when there's

  231. an impairment, something otherworldly

  232. controlling them, uh, that authority

  233. becomes invalid. And you say, "Well, how

  234. does that apply?" Well, let me just put

  235. it this way. It's really not even that.

  236. If it becomes sinful,

  237. >> when we we talk to children, deal with

  238. them, you know, they're always to obey

  239. their parents. But when their obedience

  240. becomes sinful, they're no longer

  241. required to obey that,

  242. >> right?

  243. >> And uh I know that's that's we don't

  244. like that, but it's the truth. Okay? And

  245. so notice this. I I'll get into the text

  246. here. Verse 22, he leads off with the

  247. wives. And I I think there's a reason

  248. for that. I'll say more about that in a

  249. minute. He says in verse 22, "Wives,

  250. submit yourselves unto your own husbands

  251. as unto the Lord." So there's an

  252. admonition here. And just like in verse

  253. 21, it's conditional. There in verse

  254. number 21, he says we're to submit

  255. yourselves one to another in the fear of

  256. God. Our submission to each other is

  257. dependent upon our reverence for the

  258. Lord. And so if you don't fear the Lord,

  259. you're not going to submit yourself one

  260. to another. In verse 22, the Bible says,

  261. "Submit yourselves unto your own

  262. husbands as unto the Lord." And so what

  263. this does is is lays out number one the

  264. reason. What what is the reason that

  265. wives are to submit to their own

  266. husbands? Well, turn with me to the book

  267. of Genesis, chapter number three.

  268. Genesis, chapter number three,

  269. verse number 16.

  270. This is a a fact of scripture. All

  271. right? And the reason I said there's

  272. been a change is because it was not

  273. orchestrated this way in the beginning.

  274. I've said this before at the church, and

  275. it should be no surprise to us when the

  276. Bible says in Genesis 1 that God made

  277. man in the image of himself. We made in

  278. the image of God. But because of sin,

  279. that image is tarnished. All right? And

  280. so what I want you to understand is is

  281. God the Father, God the Son, and God the

  282. Holy Spirit are all co-equal and

  283. co-eternal. Well, we were made in the

  284. image of God. And so we were made to be

  285. that same way. All of God's uh creation,

  286. all of the people that he created were

  287. made to be equal in that way. But notice

  288. what happens here in the text. Verse

  289. number 16, Genesis 3, the Bible says uh

  290. here, of course, this is the curse uh

  291. that is given here because of sin in the

  292. garden. Eve is taken of the fruit. She

  293. was deceived by the serpent. Adam comes,

  294. chooses his wife uh over the Lord and he

  295. willfully sins against the Lord. And and

  296. the Bible said verse number 16, unto the

  297. woman, God said, I will greatly multiply

  298. thy sorrow in thy conception. In sorrow

  299. thou shalt bring forth children. Notice

  300. this last phrase, and thy desire shall

  301. be to thy husband, and he shall rule

  302. over thee. So one of the first

  303. principles that took place in scripture

  304. uh it deals with the authority of the

  305. man and his wife. It deals with that uh

  306. headship. Now layman Strauss said this.

  307. All right. I would never be bold enough

  308. to say this but I I want you to listen

  309. to what he said. All right. He said the

  310. woman because of her greater

  311. trustfulness is controlled by her heart

  312. more than her head. And he said so thus

  313. man was made the one to be in rule. You

  314. see, in the garden, Eve was deceived and

  315. Adam was in the transgression. Eve was

  316. deceived by the serpent. Adam was not

  317. deceived. And so, he willfully,

  318. presumptuously sinned against the Lord

  319. in partaking of the fruit. Why was that?

  320. Because he loved his wife,

  321. >> right,

  322. >> more than he loved God. All right? And

  323. so, he was not deceived. Eve was

  324. deceived. Adam made the willful choice

  325. to sin against the Lord. And so the

  326. reason for this submission here is

  327. because of the sinful state in which we

  328. live. Now here's the reason. You say,

  329. "Preacher, well that that puts a damper

  330. on the woman." Well, let me just remind

  331. you what scripture says about marriage.

  332. All right? After sin as well. The Bible

  333. says, "He that findeth a wife findeth a

  334. good thing.

  335. >> And two are better than one because they

  336. have good reward for their labor." The

  337. Bible says. You say, "What do you mean

  338. by that?" Well, just as the man is to

  339. protect the woman, the woman has a duty

  340. to take care of her husband.

  341. >> And so in in sin where we are in sin, it

  342. it gives us a requirement for that

  343. spiritual aid. It's not a it's not a a

  344. hierarchy type deal in the marriage.

  345. See, that's our problem. We have the

  346. wrong mindset about it. Okay? We're to

  347. assist each other. But this is the

  348. reason why this was made, this is given

  349. in the scripture. You can look before

  350. that. We know that Eve was taken out of

  351. the rib of Adam. You know, you've heard

  352. it said she wasn't taken out of the foot

  353. so Adam could trample on her and she

  354. wasn't taken out of his head so that she

  355. could be over him, but she was taken out

  356. of the rib so she could be by his side.

  357. She's an helpmate for him to be close to

  358. him. And the Bible says in verse 22,

  359. wives, submit yourselves under your own

  360. husband. So there's the reason that's

  361. given in Genesis 3. But then there's a

  362. revelation concerning this in the New

  363. Testament. I want I want you to listen

  364. to what Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy

  365. chapter number two.

  366. 1 Timothy chapter 2

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  367. verse number 11.

  368. I'm going to get to the men. Okay,

  369. ladies don't fall out with me. All

  370. right. 1 Timothy chapter 2 and verse

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  371. number 11. Let's let's let's look back

  372. at verse number nine here and just do a

  373. overview of this. In like manner also

  374. that women adorn themselves in modest

  375. apparel with shamef faceness and

  376. sobriety, not with broaded hair or gold

  377. or pearls or costly array, but which

  378. becometh women professing godliness, but

  379. with good works. Let the woman learn in

  380. subject silence with all subjection. But

  381. I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to

  382. assert authority over the man, but to be

  383. in silence. For Adam was firstborn, then

  384. Eve, and Adam was not deceived. But the

  385. woman being deceived was in the

  386. transgression. Notwithstanding, ye, she

  387. shall be saved in childbearing, if they

  388. continue in faith and charity and

  389. holiness with sobriety. Now, I know that

  390. text has a lot in it, and I'm not going

  391. to deal with all of that right at this

  392. point in time. But basically, in

  393. essence, what I wanted you to see is

  394. this is people want to take the Old

  395. Testament laws concerning women and

  396. separate that from the New Testament

  397. from the day of grace.

  398. >> What you're going to find is that stuff

  399. carries over.

  400. >> The principles that were introduced in

  401. the Old Testament are revealed in the

  402. New Testament likewise. And what that

  403. means is is all of that text reveals

  404. right there is is basically this that a

  405. woman is not to do anything to draw

  406. attention unnecessary attention unto

  407. herself by her dress by her attitude by

  408. the way in which she carries herself.

  409. And the reason why that a woman is not

  410. to teach is because the way that a man's

  411. mind operates. All right, not going to

  412. go any into that any further but you you

  413. can read between the lines there. Okay,

  414. we need to understand that when we come

  415. to the scripture, there's a reason why

  416. things are laid out the way that they

  417. are. You say, "Preacher, well, I know

  418. women that can teach better than men." I

  419. do, too. Amen. Amen. My mama's one of

  420. them. My wife is one of them. Amen. I

  421. listen to them talk sometimes and I want

  422. to crawl in a hole. Amen. And best

  423. Christians I've ever been around. But

  424. here's what I'm saying. They know their

  425. place.

  426. >> You're right.

  427. >> They know their place. I didn't put them

  428. there.

  429. >> My daddy don't put my mama there. They

  430. have made that decision for themselves.

  431. Okay? And let me say this to you ladies

  432. here this morning. Nobody can make you

  433. submit.

  434. >> Nobody can put you in your place. That's

  435. what we hear in the world today. Well,

  436. they they've they've pushed me down.

  437. They've silenced me. No, that's not the

  438. way it is. Okay? Here's here's the thing

  439. you got to remember. All right? Nobody

  440. can take that from you. You're

  441. >> right.

  442. >> They take it from you if you allow them

  443. to. All right? I feel like we've missed

  444. that in this day and time. All right?

  445. Now, I know that there's circumstances

  446. and you know the exceptions to that.

  447. Okay, I understand. But you you you get

  448. what I'm saying. All right, for us who

  449. are in good marriages this morning,

  450. we're not going to force that upon you.

  451. So, the reason there's the revelation

  452. that's given in 1 Timothy 2 11-14

  453. and then there's the requirement in

  454. verse 22. He says, "Submit yourselves

  455. unto your own husbands as unto the

  456. Lord." Now, what's the requirement here?

  457. This the requirement's not on the wife.

  458. Now the wife is is said is she's told to

  459. submit. But you notice that phrase there

  460. as unto the Lord. So that has several

  461. different meanings. Okay? So if you are

  462. going to submit to your husband, first

  463. of all, that means you have to be

  464. submitted to the Lord.

  465. >> Right?

  466. >> Because you'll never truly submit to

  467. godly leadership in your life without

  468. submitting to God's leadership

  469. >> in your life. Don't miss what I said.

  470. You will never submit to godly

  471. leadership in your life without having

  472. first submitted to God's leadership in

  473. your life. But I'll say this as well.

  474. All right. It goes further than that.

  475. This requirement here goes upon the man

  476. that his leadership must be godly.

  477. >> You're right. Come on.

  478. >> If we're to submit to our own hus if a

  479. wife is to submit to her own husband as

  480. unto the Lord, that means his leadership

  481. has to be godly.

  482. >> Right?

  483. >> Wouldn't it? It's not that we submit

  484. unto them blindly.

  485. >> You're never commanded as a wife to

  486. submit to them blindly to do things that

  487. are unpleasing or displeasing to the

  488. Lord or sinful or things of that nature.

  489. Now, we understand this morning the

  490. scripture deals with all the topics of

  491. of the intimate things between a man and

  492. a woman. And that's not what I'm talking

  493. about. I'm talking about in matters of

  494. life.

  495. >> Yes.

  496. >> If he is not godly,

  497. if he does not operate in a realm of

  498. righteousness, that submission is not

  499. possible.

  500. >> Our submission is first of all unto the

  501. Lord. And so, let me say this to you

  502. ladies. Until you submit to the Lord,

  503. you will never submit to your husband.

  504. All right? The way that you should.

  505. Okay? And so there is the requirement

  506. here in this text. I got some quotes

  507. here. I highlighted in a commentary

  508. here. I I I read this this morning. I

  509. thought this was good. It says, "Even as

  510. our loyalty and allegiance can be

  511. sustained to one God only, so with every

  512. wife to her own husband." Notice that in

  513. the verse. Wives, submit yourselves unto

  514. your own

  515. husbands.

  516. >> Right? in uh as unto the Lord. Just as

  517. you know the Bible teach Jesus said you

  518. cannot worship God and mammon. You can't

  519. serve two masters. There's only a wife

  520. is to be submissive to her husband. Now

  521. in this day and time, the work world,

  522. women are having to do things that they

  523. were never designed to do. You're

  524. >> right.

  525. >> And men in the workplace lording over

  526. women at times can be very cruel.

  527. >> Remember, you are only to submit to one

  528. man. That's your husband.

  529. Amen.

  530. >> Submit yourselves unto your own husbands

  531. as unto the Lord. Verse 23, there is the

  532. uh the faith that is mentioned in verse

  533. 22 required here to operate this way.

  534. You're not going to do this if you're

  535. not saved. Let me I should have said

  536. that first. Amen. If you're not born

  537. again, this is not going to be a part of

  538. your life. But in verse 23, there's the

  539. figure that he mentions here. He says,

  540. "For the husband is the head of the

  541. wife, even as Christ is the head of the

  542. church, and he is the savior of the

  543. body." And so this this reveals to us

  544. here the union of the marriage. It was

  545. ordained in the beginning. You've heard

  546. me say this before. Before uh the church

  547. was ever orchestrated, before government

  548. was ever given, before even the law was

  549. written down and pinned uh and given to

  550. Moses, God orchestrated the marriage.

  551. That's the oldest uh u union that's been

  552. made. There's no other relationship.

  553. Before there was children and parents,

  554. there was a husband and wife. And it's

  555. the most sacred thing in the world that

  556. you have today. And so you've heard it

  557. said, "As goes the home, so goes the

  558. church." There's a reason why this is

  559. necessity because this is what how we

  560. represent the Lord. And he says in verse

  561. 23, for the husband is the head of the

  562. wife. Now, of course, we know that this

  563. has to do with his God-given authority.

  564. And like I said, there are things that

  565. disqualify him from this, but we must

  566. remember that this is the way that God

  567. designed it. Now, I want to say this as

  568. well. Some of the most godly women that

  569. I've ever been around in my life had

  570. husbands who were not saved or either

  571. they they either were not saved or out

  572. of the will of God.

  573. >> But here's what I've seen about all

  574. those women, godly women. You know what

  575. they did to those husbands? They

  576. submitted unto them as far as they

  577. could. Yes,

  578. >> they did as much as they could for them

  579. within the bounds of scripture.

  580. >> I've seen it time and time again. I know

  581. a lady I was actually I just saw her on

  582. yesterday and she she's told the story

  583. before. She's uh elderly lady. She was

  584. married I guess probably over 50 years I

  585. guess. But her husband died lost without

  586. God prayed for him her whole life. And

  587. uh she tell tell told the story, you

  588. know, she she don't glory in this, but

  589. she and she would never tell this to a

  590. congregation, but I she told this to my

  591. mom and dad. She said, "I prayed for him

  592. for years, and she said, "I did my best

  593. to live with him because that vow that I

  594. made to him was before God."

  595. >> The world says give up.

  596. >> The world says quit. Now look, here's

  597. the thing about it. You can't do nothing

  598. about what somebody else does,

  599. >> but you can honor your end of the deal.

  600. >> Amen. If they leave and you and you

  601. can't do anything about that, that's not

  602. on you. All right, here's the thing

  603. about it, okay? As long as they're

  604. around, you got to make sure that you're

  605. doing what God told you to do. And God's

  606. blessed that woman. And she'll tell you

  607. this. She said, "I live with him my

  608. whole life." She said, "It was

  609. miserable." And she said, "Here's the

  610. reason why I married out of the will of

  611. God."

  612. >> She said, "But that vow was made before

  613. God,

  614. >> right?

  615. >> And he didn't leave, and so I didn't

  616. leave." She stayed married to him her

  617. whole life. Her children, they're

  618. suffering for it because none of them

  619. are saved. They don't go to church. And

  620. she prays for them all the time. What

  621. I'm trying to make to you out of that is

  622. this is that she submitted as far as she

  623. could

  624. >> in order to keep that together. And like

  625. I said, there's some things that are out

  626. of your hands,

  627. >> right?

  628. >> I mean, we we know that this morning. We

  629. don't have to be foolish in that this

  630. morning. But there we are to submit to

  631. the extent because the husband is the

  632. head of the wife. Let me say this to you

  633. this morning, ladies. If your husband is

  634. not saved, that does not make him any

  635. less the head.

  636. I know, I know that's that's hard. But

  637. let me tell you, it does not if he is

  638. not saved, if he is not in church, if

  639. he's not faithful, he is still your

  640. husband,

  641. >> right?

  642. >> And he is still the head. And it's still

  643. right for you to submit to him as far as

  644. you can.

  645. That's honorable.

  646. Paul talks about in Corinthians that the

  647. unbelieving husband, the unbelieving

  648. spouse is sanctified by the belief of

  649. the other. It doesn't mean that they're

  650. saved. What that means is is that means

  651. it gives them an opportunity.

  652. >> You're being a witness. You're being a

  653. light to them. All right? And that

  654. sanctification, if you have a believing

  655. spouse, that's going to inevitably keep

  656. that other spouse from doing some things

  657. that they would otherwise do. You're

  658. >> right.

  659. >> They weren't there. Wouldn't you say

  660. that this morning? There's so much

  661. there's so much in this. Okay? And I'm

  662. trying just to trying not to Here's the

  663. thing about it. Sin has made a mess,

  664. >> right?

  665. >> What God made. We know that this

  666. morning. And that's why I have to deal

  667. with this in this manner because we know

  668. that there there are limits to these

  669. things. But but let me say again, as

  670. long if they are your husband, they are

  671. the head

  672. and you have to submit to them as far as

  673. the Lord commands you to. And if you're

  674. saved, the spirit of God will give you

  675. wisdom

  676. >> for that. Verse 23, for the husband is

  677. the head of the wife, even as Christ is

  678. the head of the church. Now, what do we

  679. know about Christ? And uh layman Strauss

  680. said this. He had he did a devotional

  681. thought on this text and I thought it

  682. was amazing. He said, "Adam and Eve in

  683. the garden. God, you know, he put Adam

  684. to sleep. First anesthetic." Amen. And

  685. uh put him out and took his rib out.

  686. Amen. And made Eve. Ain't that right?

  687. That's what happened. He took that rib

  688. out and made Eve. But he said, you know,

  689. Christ and the church, he said on

  690. Calvar's cross when that soldier pierced

  691. his side. The Bible says it forth with

  692. came throughout blood and water. That

  693. was that was Christ making the church

  694. >> because it was that water that brought

  695. our washing and that blood that brought

  696. our redemption. And out of that, the

  697. church was born and he is the head. What

  698. did he say there in Ephesians chapter

  699. number one verse number 22? He put all

  700. things under his feet and gave him to be

  701. the head. Notice that again. Over all

  702. things to the church. A husband in his

  703. proper place is is the head so he can

  704. bless his wife.

  705. >> You're right.

  706. >> Not so he can just be a lord over her

  707. and tell her what to do.

  708. >> Right.

  709. >> But so he can bless her. So he can be

  710. the one to provide her needs. Amen.

  711. >> Notice that in verse 23. Even as Christ

  712. is the head of the church. I want your

  713. Bible saying he is the savior of the

  714. body. That means he's the preserver of

  715. life.

  716. >> Right?

  717. >> The husband without the husband and the

  718. wife there are no children.

  719. >> You think about this Christ without the

  720. church there's no fruit.

  721. >> The church without Christ there's no

  722. fruit. Amen.

  723. >> And so the emphasis here is in this

  724. figure to show us the authority that the

  725. husband possesses. Now just like Christ,

  726. the husband is to be a gentleman. He's

  727. never to force his opinion on his wife.

  728. Right?

  729. >> Jesus has never forced us to do

  730. anything.

  731. >> Amen.

  732. >> He invites us and he invites us out of

  733. that authority from his higher standing.

  734. I remember this. He knows more. Amen.

  735. Husbands don't always know more. Matter

  736. of fact, most time they don't.

  737. >> You're right.

  738. >> But Christ does.

  739. >> And so, you know what he does? He stands

  740. higher and says, "Come up here where I

  741. am. I want to bless you." And so as he

  742. is the head, he is the savior of the

  743. body. In verse 24, there's the figure in

  744. 23. But then there's the command to

  745. follow. In verse 24, therefore, as the

  746. church is subject unto Christ, as the

  747. operation of it, the order of it, the

  748. organization of it, everything that goes

  749. on in the church is subject unto Christ.

  750. The Bible says in verse 24, "So let the

  751. wives be to their own husbands in

  752. everything."

  753. Now notice Colossians chapter 3. Okay?

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  754. You say, "Preacher, I just don't see a

  755. clause in there where a husband

  756. disqualifies himself." Well, notice

  757. verse number 18. Colossians 3. Okay? And

  758. I hate that I have to emphasize this.

  759. All right? But I I know where we live at

  760. in this day and time. Okay? Listen to

  761. Colossians 3 and verse number 18.

  762. All right? Mark this in your Bible if

  763. you need this verse to go back to.

  764. Listen to what he says. Wives, submit

  765. yourselves unto your own husbands. And

  766. what's that last phrase?

  767. As it is fit in the Lord.

  768. There's some things that are right, but

  769. there comes a point when it's not

  770. fitting anymore.

  771. >> Right?

  772. >> And I'm not saying by the time when when

  773. when something that's right to a point,

  774. then it becomes wrong. That's what I'm

  775. saying. It does not mean that it's right

  776. to submit to them to a place where if

  777. they're telling you to rob a bank, you

  778. go with them and help. Amen. I promise

  779. you if you do that, you'll get locked up

  780. the same way that they do. Amen.

  781. >> You say, "Preacher, that's a childish

  782. mind." I'm trying to explain the truth

  783. to you, though.

  784. >> As it's fit.

  785. And here's the thing about it. You will

  786. give an account to God on where you draw

  787. that line.

  788. >> You're right.

  789. >> On what's fit and what's not. See, here

  790. in the text, the Bible says verse number

  791. 24, "Therefore, as the church is subject

  792. unto Christ, so let the wives be to

  793. their own husbands in everything." That

  794. means every facet of life just as the

  795. church operates under the blanket of

  796. authority of Christ. That means

  797. everything that we do must first go

  798. through his guideline.

  799. We we follow his rule book. We we

  800. operate in the realm of his spirit the

  801. same way the home is to operate that

  802. way.

  803. >> Right?

  804. >> There should be nothing done in the home

  805. that the husband doesn't know about.

  806. >> Let me say this to you mothers. Don't

  807. ever do things for your children. you

  808. know, allow your children to have

  809. something and not consult your husband,

  810. >> right?

  811. >> I mean, I I I've seen seen it time and

  812. time again. Make sure there's a joint

  813. leadership there.

  814. >> Amen.

  815. >> And I understand, like I said, I

  816. understand not every situation can work

  817. that way. You got to make sure you're

  818. doing doing what God tells you to. But

  819. but the basis of the leadership of the

  820. scripture is is that he is the authority

  821. and he has the final say. That's what

  822. God said. That's not what I said. Notice

  823. this.

  824. There is the the faith, the figure, the

  825. command to follow. Notice the favor in

  826. verse 25. All right? And I'll I'll deal

  827. more with this on next week. Just

  828. precursor. And those of you that are

  829. going on the marriage conference, you'll

  830. get double triple dose of this. All

  831. right? And uh I'm looking forward to

  832. brother Seth dealing with this. But

  833. notice verse 25. Husbands, love your

  834. wives even as Christ also loved the

  835. church and gave herself gave himself for

  836. it. So this favor is seen here in the

  837. text. Now, of course, verse 25 deals

  838. number one with an expression. All

  839. right? Husbands, love your wives. All

  840. right? First of all, that expression is

  841. inward. All right? You know whether or

  842. not you love God. Okay? And you know

  843. whether or not in your heart you love

  844. your wife.

  845. >> But out of that inward desire towards

  846. your wife, there ought to be an outward

  847. expression of love. We cannot expect you

  848. if if if we were to look at somebody and

  849. somebody tell us that they love God but

  850. then their life completely contradict

  851. that. What would we say about them? Say

  852. they're not telling the truth. Right?

  853. >> Well, if you tell your wife you love

  854. her, you need to do things to express

  855. that.

  856. >> You're right.

  857. >> Why is it so quiet? Amen. You ought you

  858. ought to do things in order to express

  859. that love to her. Because the thing is

  860. is, you know, she can read your mind at

  861. times, but she can't always.

  862. >> Amen.

  863. >> Amen. And you can't read her mind at

  864. all. God help you. Amen.

  865. >> And so, you're called to express that.

  866. Look at it again. Husbands, love your

  867. wives. In your heart, you you we know

  868. this morning, just like it is with the

  869. men, there's going to be some that that

  870. you know, they're not going to receive

  871. love. Well,

  872. >> let me say this about that. Most of the

  873. time, it's not their fault. Right?

  874. >> Most time has to do with mom and dad. It

  875. didn't love them the way they should

  876. have been loved. Didn't treat them

  877. right.

  878. >> But let me say this, that does not

  879. denote the command to love.

  880. >> Regardless of how they respond.

  881. Now, when I when I think about

  882. the deal with the wife and the husband,

  883. it's more conditional than it is with

  884. the man. I think a man's to love his

  885. wife regardless.

  886. >> You're right. Right?

  887. >> I I don't think you're to I don't think

  888. you're to stop. You're

  889. >> right.

  890. >> I understand situations, circumstances,

  891. all of that. I get that. But let me ask

  892. you this. Did Christ

  893. >> was there a condition in his love?

  894. You're

  895. >> right.

  896. >> You say, "Preacher, well, my wife ought

  897. to love me." Yes, she should. But it's a

  898. Bible command for you to love your wife.

  899. >> You're right.

  900. >> She'll love you if you'll love her the

  901. way that you should. Amen. That's And

  902. you say, "Preacher, well, that's not

  903. always the case." Well, nine times out

  904. of 10, it is.

  905. They're made to submit. A wife is will

  906. be forgiving to a fault. You're

  907. >> right.

  908. >> When she loves her husband the way that

  909. she should. And if you love her the way

  910. that you should, the expression will be

  911. clear. Verse 25, there's the expression,

  912. there's the exaction of verse 25, even

  913. as Christ also loved the church. So as

  914. Jesus loved the church, I know this is

  915. nothing new to you. It's a good reminder

  916. though. He as Jesus loved the church.

  917. There is the example in verse 25. He

  918. gave himself for it. The wife is called

  919. to submit. The husband is called to die.

  920. >> You're right.

  921. >> If it requires death in order to love

  922. your wife, let me say it does.

  923. >> You're right.

  924. >> Say, "What is that?" Well, it's death to

  925. self, number one.

  926. >> And that's not a it's not a bad thing,

  927. >> right? That's not that's not something

  928. that we should turn away from because

  929. it's not desirable. I'll tell you, the

  930. flesh is going to turn turn its nose up

  931. at it many times. But I'll say this, if

  932. you love Christ, you ought to love your

  933. wife.

  934. >> If you say you're saved, you ought to

  935. love your wife.

  936. >> And he says here, the example is that

  937. Christ gave himself for the church. The

  938. expression of his love.

  939. Let me think, let me say this to you.

  940. Before there was ever a soul that was in

  941. the church, Christ died for the church.

  942. You're right.

  943. >> And I was I remember, you know, men

  944. telling me this and about preaching even

  945. about my wife. You know, you know, make

  946. sure you're the husband you should be

  947. before I I was trying to be the husband

  948. I should be before I ever met my wife. I

  949. remember people telling me that be the

  950. man that you know God would want you to

  951. be for some young lady somewhere before

  952. she gets there.

  953. >> You're right.

  954. >> You ought not have to change in order to

  955. get married.

  956. >> That goes both ways. Amen. You ought not

  957. live a freelance lifestyle up until you

  958. get married and then you get married

  959. then you all of a sudden got to reel it

  960. back in. You know that's not the way it

  961. works,

  962. >> right?

  963. >> And the world doesn't like that. They'll

  964. they'll go out on the night before their

  965. wedding and do unspeakable things.

  966. You're

  967. >> right.

  968. >> That's not the way God designed it. God

  969. designed it. We live the same character

  970. before that we do during.

  971. >> Let me say this. And after.

  972. >> You're right.

  973. >> The example is that he gave himself for

  974. it. Verse 26. What's the purpose of it?

  975. That he might sanctify and cleanse it

  976. with the washing of water by the word.

  977. Now, here's what we all know. When we

  978. when when when you, a husband and a

  979. wife, get married, there's imperfections

  980. >> on both sides. Now, the the church with

  981. Christ, there was no imperfections in

  982. him.

  983. >> Let me say this. His perfection is what

  984. causes us to be sanctified. We're

  985. getting closer to him each and every

  986. day. Yeah.

  987. >> And so here's what marriage here's how

  988. marriage puts in that picture in your

  989. relationship. As you live together, the

  990. longer that you grow, the more you ought

  991. to love one another and the the more the

  992. operation of that love should be pure.

  993. >> It shouldn't, you know, when you first

  994. get married, you do things to

  995. reciprocate, don't you? You do things

  996. and maybe you know, if I do this, I'll

  997. get something in return.

  998. >> Good.

  999. >> But you know what? As that thing goes

1000. on, you know what you find yourself

1001. doing? You love more just doing for the

1002. other one than you do getting something

  1003. in return.

1004. >> And that's part of all I mean when you

1005. get married, you know, you got a puppy

1006. love and all of that stuff, you know, at

  1007. first

1008. and I think it can stay around.

  1009. >> I think it can. Amen. I'm 5 years in. I

1010. love her more now than I ever have.

  1011. >> Right.

1012. >> But what I'll say about this is is I

1013. find more enjoyment not in what she does

1014. for me, but what I can do for her.

1015. >> That's the way Christ is. You see his

1016. joy, you remember what he said? Hebrews

1017. 12 said, "For for the joy that was set

1018. before him endured the cross." What was

1019. the joy was his bride? It was the church

1020. knowing that one day he would be in

1021. constant communion and fellowship with

1022. her in heaven. That was the joy. It

  1023. wasn't it wasn't for himself.

1024. It wasn't selfish. He wanted us to come

  1025. to him.

  1026. >> And that's why he's a gentleman. If you

1027. if you love your wife the s the way that

1028. you say you do, you won't be forceful.

1029. You'll be faithful and gentle

1030. and out of that your relationship will

1031. be cleansed. Notice that verse 26, what

1032. does the cleansing? Verse 26, that he

1033. might sanctify and cleanse it with a

1034. washing of water by the word. Now,

1035. that's for the church, but that's for

1036. the marriage, too. Don't miss the

1037. application there. What's going to draw

1038. you two together is the word of God,

  1039. >> right?

  1040. >> That's what's going to create closeness.

1041. And when a marriage leaves the word of

  1042. God collectively, inevitably, their

1043. marriage is going to begin to separate.

1044. And I'm not talking about divorce, but

1045. I'm talking about the closeness.

1046. Marriage is designed to operate on terms

  1047. of the scripture.

1048. >> It's designed to operate on terms of the

1049. scripture and on terms of the spirit of

1050. God. It requires the spirit of God to

1051. have a god centered marriage and to

  1052. enjoy it.

  1053. >> Notice this, I'll be done. Verse 27.

1054. that he might present to himself a

1055. glorious church, not having spot or

1056. wrinkle or any such thing, that it

1057. should be holy and without blemish.

1058. I'm not going to deal with that just

1059. yet, but I will say this.

  1060. Joyce Rogers, Adrien Rogers,

  1061. some I guess it's he died in 2004.

1062. And there's a clip going around on the

1063. internet right now of him talking about

1064. his wife. I never seen the man cry on

1065. any message. If you I've never seen him

1066. cry in any sermon, but on on that clip

1067. going around of him talking about Miss

1068. Joyce, he weeps like a baby standing in

1069. the pool pit. And Miss Joyce Rogers some

1070. 20 years after he passed away, somebody

1071. asked her said, "Do you said, "Do you

1072. remember his flaws?" She said, "Do you

1073. remember like anything about him? It was

1074. just different like anything that was

1075. wrong." And she said, 'You know, she

1076. said, "I'm sure that he had flaws." She

1077. said, "But I really can't remember any."

1078. >> And you know what that is? That's the

1079. example of a marriage where two people

1080. came together and you know what they

1081. did? They chose to love one another

1082. because that's what love is.

  1083. >> It's a choice. Amen. It's not a feeling.

  1084. >> I wish I could I wish we could put that

1085. on a loudspeaker for every young person

1086. in this country to hear.

1087. >> You choose to love.

  1088. >> That's right.

1089. >> You choose to. Christ chose to love us.

1090. >> Amen. And John said this way in first

1091. John, I believe it's chapter number four

1092. and verse number 19. We love him because

  1093. he first loved us.

1094. >> And so you choose to love and out of

1095. that what creates the longer that you

1096. love the closer it gets. And I like

1097. this. I like the more perfect it can be.

  1098. >> Amen.

1099. >> I thought it was perfect. Me and Abby

1100. got married and I found out you know

1101. what it just gets better.

  1102. >> So it obviously wasn't perfect, but I

1103. ain't stopped thinking that. Amen.

1104. I want I want our young people to have

  1105. that.

1106. >> And let me say this. I and I know that

1107. you know my my family is full of it.

1108. We've got it here this morning. I know

  1109. there's there's things trouble people

1110. sin and mistakes happen and all of that.

1111. But let your children know that it can

  1112. be.

  1113. >> Don't discourage them.

1114. >> You've got a young lady or young man

1115. that's going to get married. Don't tell

1116. them, "Well, make the best of it."

1117. If that's what you have to do, then you

  1118. ought not get married.

  1119. >> You're right.

1120. >> You ought to marry somebody you love.

1121. You ought to marry who God tells you to

  1122. marry. Amen.

1123. >> And u and out of that, you can enjoy it

1124. and it'd be a blessing to you. And uh

1125. but I am thankful. My my mom and daddy

1126. told me this. You turn that live stream

1127. off. We'll be done. Mom and dad told me
