  6. with your friends. Now, let's join

  7. Pastor Charlie Branch with a word from

  8. God.

  9. Matthew's Gospel, chapter number nine.

  10. And uh we'll look there this morning.

  11. Gonna deal with a thought here. Sunday

  12. school and Sunday school primarily

  13. teaching. So I'm going to try to do just

  14. that this morning. I want you to stay

  15. with me. I've had a lot of questions

  16. asked about this and uh this subject I'm

  17. going to be dealing with. And so we're

  18. going to talk just a little bit about it

  19. today. By no means is this an exhaustive

  20. uh lesson on this subject, but really

  21. just an overview uh thought here. And

  22. we'll read just a couple verses here in

  23. Matthew chapter 9. And uh what I really

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  24. wanted with Sunday school and we brought

  25. that back to the church is I wanted it

  26. to be a beneficial time of growth. And

  27. preaching a lot of times is is preaching

  28. to get a response out of uh the lost

  29. telling them to come to Jesus or uh

  30. maybe those who are saved and out of the

  31. will of God to come back to Jesus. Uh

  32. but teaching is a time of growth for

  33. those of us who are saved and trying to

  34. walk with God. And uh teaching is what's

  35. going to get you from from here until

  36. another day and until we come back. And

  37. so we need to know more of his word. And

  38. I appreciate you being faithful to be

  39. here on Sunday mornings. And I will say

  40. this, be praying if God would have you

  41. to help with this class. And you men be

  42. praying that God will give you

  43. leadership on that. And uh because I

  44. would love to have you have some help

  45. with this. And so but until then, we'll

  46. keep doing it. But I want to look here.

  47. Matthew's Gospel chapter nine. I want to

  48. read verse number 14. We'll start

  49. reading in verse number 14.

  50. I love this chapter. This chapter is is

  51. slam full of all kinds of truths and uh

  52. different uh different lessons that we

  53. can learn. I'll be preaching from this

  54. chapter in the 11:00 hour today and

  55. you'll see why I use this text uh then.

  56. But we're going to deal with this

  57. subject of fasting. Notice verse 14,

  58. Matthew chapter 9. The Bible says, "Then

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  59. came to him the disciples of John,

  60. saying, why do we and the Pharisees fast

  61. ofty

  62. disciples fast not?" And Jesus said unto

  63. them, "Can the children of the bride

  64. chamber mourn as long as the bridegroom

  65. is with them? But the days will come

  66. when the bridegroom shall be taken from

  67. them, and then shall they fast. No man

  68. putth a piece of new cloth unto an old

  69. garment. For that which is put in to

  70. fill it up taketh from the garment, and

  71. the ren is made worse. Neither do men

  72. put new wine uh into old bottles, else

  73. the bottles break, and the wine runth

  74. out, and the bottles perish. But they

  75. put new wine into new bottles and both

  76. are preserved. Now, Father, I ask Lord,

  77. as we try to teach this subject this

  78. morning, I pray you give us wisdom, God,

  79. I pray you'd enlighten our mind. Help us

  80. remember what we've studied, Father. And

  81. if there's anything, God, that maybe I

  82. didn't see in my studies, Lord, that

  83. needs to be uh brought to my remembrance

  84. now. I pray you'd open my eyes to it.

  85. And God, I ask you'd help us, Father, to

  86. be faithful to heed this word and obey

  87. uh Lord, as we listen this morning. God,

  88. thank you for this ministry of fasting

  89. in our life. Help us to uh employ it,

  90. Father, and make use of it in these

  91. days. God, I know uh that it will be

  92. fruitful when we do it. So, Lord, I ask

  93. you to help us. We'll thank you for it

  94. because we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  95. This subject this morning is a touchy

  96. subject uh amongst the ranks of of

  97. Christianity. The reason being is it's

  98. painful to the flesh. And and I was

  99. thinking about this this morning,

  100. looking over my notes for this this

  101. chapter. I use this chapter uh mainly

  102. because I'm leading up to a text that

  103. I'll be preaching from in the 11:00

  104. hour, but I felt led to deal with the

  105. subject of fasting. Now, fasting was

  106. introduced in the Old Testament. The

  107. first time you find the word fast

  108. mentioned uh on the along the lines of

  109. fasting uh what it really means in the

  110. scripture, you find the word fast before

  111. that. But fast as it's used uh in this

  112. terminology is found in the book of

  113. Judges chapter number 20. And we'll turn

  114. there in just a minute. But fasting is

  115. simply this. When you look at it in

  116. respect to the scriptures, it has to do

  117. with the abstinence from food in order

  118. to draw near unto God. Now, we know that

  119. John the Baptist when he came on the

  120. scene, the Bible says that he ate locust

  121. and wild honey. And so, pretty much his

  122. entire life was spent fasting. And

  123. Jesus, our Lord, the Bible says that he

  124. had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights uh

  125. while he was being tempted of the devil.

  126. And so, fasting is obviously a part of

  127. the scripture. It's a part of the

  128. apostles life. I'll say more about that

  129. in just a minute. And it is profitable

  130. for you and I today as the church of

  131. God. Now, I will say this. There is not

  132. a command to fast. But I'll say this,

  133. it's just expected.

  134. >> Amen.

  135. >> It's just expect. You say, "How is

  136. that?" Well, now listen to what Jesus

  137. says in Matthew chapter 6 verse number

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  138. verse number 16. What's your Bible say?

  139. That first phrase.

  140. Moreover, when you fast, look what he

  141. says in verse number 17. But thou when

  142. thou fastest, verse number 18, that thou

  143. appear not unto men to fast, but unto

  144. thy father which is in secret, and thy

  145. father which seeth in secret shall

  146. reward thee openly. And so Jesus even

  147. addresses this principle of fasting. And

  148. so it's just expected. I'll say this,

  149. it's expected. But I'll say this, when

  150. you fast, you ought to fast out of

  151. expectancy. All right? I say that to put

  152. this in your mind. It's number one, it's

  153. expected that you fast. But when you

  154. fast, a fast is done not just as a

  155. nonchalant thing in life. Well, I need

  156. something from God, so I'm going to miss

  157. a meal and uh just hope that it shows

  158. up. No, when you fast, you need to be

  159. expecting God to do what you're fasting

  160. about.

  161. >> That's what faith is. And fasting is

  162. just a another step in this ministry.

  163. And I'll say more about that in just a

  164. minute. But back to our text, what Jesus

  165. is dealing with here in Matthew chapter

  166. number N. The disciples here of John

  167. verse number 14 have come to Jesus and

  168. they ask him this question. They say,

  169. "Why do we and the Pharisees fast off

  170. but thy disciples fast not?" Now, the

  171. question that they're asking here is

  172. almost an accusation. They're looking at

  173. Jesus and looking at these disciples who

  174. really to them are living a very easy

  175. life with Jesus. Now, we know what

  176. Christ's ministry was when he came to

  177. this earth. John said that he'd come to

  178. bring fire and he'll he'll thoroughly p

  179. purge his his floor and he'll gather the

  180. wheat into the garner and the chaff

  181. shall be burned. And John had this image

  182. in his mind that Jesus was going to be

  183. just like him. But what do we know about

  184. Jesus? He fasted in the wilderness and

  185. then after that, what did he do? He went

  186. out into the world and he began to work

  187. miracles. What you see in this chapter,

  188. there is his ministry of miracles.

  189. There's like four or five miracles that

  190. take place in this chapter alone. And

  191. then there's the ministry of missions

  192. that you find in this chapter. In

  193. chapter number nine, in verse number 36,

  194. Jesus when he saw the multitudes, he was

  195. moved with compassion on them. And then

  196. there's this message that he gives to

  197. these men here in this text. See,

  198. they're comparing themselves. And you

  199. see the Pharisees and even John's

  200. disciples, most of them, pretty much all

  201. of them being Jews, they had this notion

  202. in their mind that Jesus, that fasting

  203. is what made them more spiritual. It was

  204. the outward that brought spirituality in

  205. their life. Let me say this, the outward

  206. almost never is what spiritual is where

  207. spirituality starts.

  208. >> The outward is where spirituality ends.

  209. It is the effect. It's not the cause.

  210. Now notice this in the text verse 15 he

  211. says Jesus said of them can the children

  212. of the bride chamber mourn as long as

  213. the bridegroom is with them. So he

  214. mentions here in this text there's the

  215. imagery of the Jewish wedding here. He

  216. mentions the children of the bride

  217. chamber. This has to do with the friends

  218. of the bridegroom. These children of the

  219. bride chamber would accompany that groom

  220. as he would go under the bride's home to

  221. bring her back unto himself. And this

  222. was a time of rejoicing as these

  223. children were walking about with the

  224. groom. And isn't that the picture of the

  225. Lord Jesus Christ in this text that

  226. these disciples are accompanying him

  227. trying to minister to the Jews. Isn't

  228. that what this is? Notice chapter number

  229. 10 verse number one. And when he had

  230. called unto him his 12 disciples, he

  231. gave them power against unclean spirits

  232. to cast them out to heal all manner of

  233. sickness and all manner of disease.

  234. Verse number five. These 12 Jesus sent

  235. forth and commanded them, saying, "Go

  236. not into the way of the Gentiles, and

  237. into any city of the Samaritans, enter

  238. you not." Listen to what he says. But go

  239. rather to the lost sheep of the house of

  240. Israel. The bridegroom is inviting his

  241. people unto himself. And so the children

  242. of the bride chamber here are these

  243. disciples. And he says, "Can they mourn

  244. as long as the bridegroom's with them?"

  245. Jesus is right there with them in their

  246. presence. He's with them, alongside of

  247. them. Look what he says. Not only the

  248. children, but there's the company. Verse

  249. number 15, the bridegroom is present

  250. with them. The time that this journey

  251. would take place from the groom's home

  252. to the time that he would get to his

  253. wife's home to bring her unto himself

  254. was a time of rejoicing. The children of

  255. the bride chamber were what made this

  256. journey special. They would rejoice

  257. along with the groom as they traveled

  258. along. But then you notice in verse 15,

  259. he talks about the coming days. Look

  260. what he says. The days will come when

  261. the bridegroom shall be taken from them.

  262. Now, what was he talking about? Well,

  263. first of all, he was talking about the

  264. cross. Amen. He would be taken from

  265. them, but inevitably he was talking

  266. about his ascension. The fact that Jesus

  267. would not stay. He said, the Bible says

  268. in verse 15, "And when the bridegroom

  269. shall be taken from them, there's the

  270. change." Look what he says. "Then shall

  271. they fast." Now, the principle of

  272. fasting here is is is presented. Verse

  273. 16. Notice the pattern here. He gives an

  274. illustration. Verse 16 and 17. No man

  275. putteth a piece of new cloth onto an old

  276. garment, unto an old garment. For that

  277. which is put in to fill it up taketh

  278. from the garment, and the ren is made

  279. worse. So the pattern here, verse 16,

  280. verse 17, neither do men put new wine

  281. into old bottles. Now number one, what

  282. do you notice about that? All right, a

  283. cloth uh this this garment. What is

  284. that? That's an exterior item, is that's

  285. a clothing. That's that's that's a a

  286. vesture. That's a garment. Something

  287. that's on the outside. What's this wine

  288. bottle? What's a container?

  289. As a garment is a covering. The bottle

  290. is a container. Now, notice what he says

  291. here in verse 16. So, there's the

  292. pattern that's seen. It's an exterior

  293. representation. But then there's the

  294. problem that shows up. Look what he

  295. says. No man putth a piece of new cloth

  296. unto an old garment. Now, you know this

  297. morning, if you've done any sewing at

  298. all, that you can't take a new piece of

  299. cloth and put it on an old garment and

  300. expect it to stay.

  301. >> Cuz here's what happens when the

  302. pressure gets on on that thing and you

  303. start pulling on it. What does it do?

  304. That new piece is stronger than the old,

  305. isn't it?

  306. >> And so, what does it do? It begins to

  307. pull apart the old. You say, "Well,

  308. what's the imagery here?" I'll give you

  309. that in just a minute. So, basically,

  310. what that means is is that there's a

  311. conjoining problem. The two cannot mix.

  312. this mixture is not accepted. And so

  313. it's that the problem is is when that

  314. new garment is placed on, the new piece

  315. of clo or that new cloth is placed on,

  316. the new piece does not tear, but it

  317. causes the old to tear in another place.

  318. And let me say this, Christianity is not

  319. a patching religion. You're

  320. >> right.

  321. >> Amen. Christianity is a fix it from the

  322. ground up. Amen. Notice this verse 17.

  323. I'll give you the imagery. Neither do

  324. men put new wine into old bottles, else

  325. the bottles break. Now you need to know

  326. about the day and time which this was

  327. written to understand this. The wine

  328. bottles in this day time of course this

  329. is unfermented wine. This new wine it

  330. would just be pressed. It would just be

  331. cleaned and placed into these bottles.

  332. And these bottles were made out of skin.

  333. And these skins they would be when you

  334. you think about old bottles when that

  335. wine would sit in there. I don't have a

  336. specified amount of time. I tried to

  337. find something on that. I couldn't find

  338. anything about a a specific amount of

  339. time. But for some time that wine would

  340. sit in that bottle and as the bottle

  341. itself would would transform, you know,

  342. wine as it ferments, what does it do? It

  343. grows. It expands and contracts. It's

  344. much like the imagery of ice. If you put

  345. a bottle of water in the freezer and if

  346. it's in a glass bottle, Amen. You know

  347. what's going to happen after a few days?

  348. That bottle's going to bust, ain't it?

  349. Well, this is the imagery in the

  350. fermentation process. that preservation

  351. of the wine. What would happen is if you

  352. put new wine into an old bottle, that

  353. bottle has set up already to the batch

  354. that was in it before. And so when you

  355. put that new wine in there, what would

  356. happen? That fermentation process would

  357. cause that old bottle to bust because of

  358. the pressure.

  359. Now notice the text, verse 17. And the

  360. wine runth out. Notice notice that next

  361. phrase. And the bottles what?

  362. >> Perish. the bottle's destroyed. Now,

  363. here's the imagery in this text. So, the

  364. the the verse 16 deals with the the new

  365. cloth on an old garment. That means

  366. there's not a there cannot be a mixture.

  367. These two cannot be conjoined. But then

  368. there is the imagery in verse 17 of the

  369. new wine and the old bottle. And there

  370. is simply the truth that it cannot be

  371. contained. You cannot put new wine into

  372. an old bottle. You say, "Preacher, what

  373. does that mean?" Well, here's what it

  374. means.

  375. This has to do with this the truth of

  376. fasting. Fasting is a spiritual work.

  377. Fasting is a a work of the spirit of God

  378. on the heart of a believer. And what

  379. you'll notice about fasting when you

  380. find it in the word of God, it's always

  381. done in conclusion with a presence of

  382. the Holy Ghost. You go back to Judges

    Judges 20 chapter mention

  383. chapter 20 and you'll find that very

  384. same truth. Israel is fighting against

  385. the Benjamites. Judges chapter 20. I've

    Judges 20 chapter mention

  386. not got time to give you a lengthy

  387. discourse on this, but the Benjamites

  388. have done wickedly and withholding the

  389. men of Giba. And so because of that,

  390. Israel goes up to fight against them.

  391. They go up once, God tells them to go.

  392. 18,000 of them die. They go up again,

  393. God tells them to go, and 25,000 of them

  394. die. And the third time they come to the

  395. Lord and it says, "On that day, they

  396. wept and fasted all day." Judges chapter

  397. number 20 and verse 26, you can turn

  398. there and read. They wept and fasted all

  399. day. And after they fasted, God said,

  400. "All right, it's time to go up. And this

  401. time they they get victory."

  402. That was the only difference that you

  403. find in this text. They fasted and God

  404. gave them the victory. It was the

  405. presence of the Holy Spirit that gave

  406. them the victory. That's what it was.

  407. And so in this text, this this imagery

  408. of the new cloth and an old garment, it

  409. reminds you this is exterior. Now, so

  410. this new cloth, all right, what happens

  411. when a man gets saved? The Bible tells

  412. us that, you know, if any man be in

  413. Christ, he's a new creature. And the

  414. Bible teaches us that our righteousness

  415. is as what?

  416. >> Filthy rags. But when we get saved, what

  417. are we clothed with? The righteousness

  418. of Christ.

  419. >> To the lamb's bride, Revelation says she

  420. was, it was granted unto her that she

  421. should be clothed in fine linen, clean

  422. and white. And so the exterior here the

  423. emphasis is this. All right. The Jew the

  424. Jews and the disciples of John were only

  425. interested in an exterior work. But you

  426. see fasting is a deeper matter than

  427. that.

  428. >> Right?

  429. >> Fasting is not just an outward

  430. expression. But fasting is an inward

  431. desire to draw near to God. And when he

  432. says no man putth a piece of new cloth

  433. onto an old garment, he's saying this.

  434. Fasting is a work for people who are

  435. saved.

  436. >> Right? But these disciples do not have

  437. the Holy Ghost yet.

  438. You say, "How is that, preacher?" Well,

  439. the Bible says that Jesus breathed on

  440. them in the upper room. That's not

  441. happened yet.

  442. >> Right?

  443. >> Holy Spirit's not took up residence on

  444. the inside. And furthermore, Jesus is

  445. present with them.

  446. >> Right?

  447. >> Fasting is a desire to draw near to God.

  448. And how why do they need to draw near to

  449. God if God's right beside them?

  450. >> You're right.

  451. >> You say, "What is the emphasis of that?"

  452. Well, notice it again. No man putteth a

  453. piece of new cloth onto an old garment.

  454. Jesus says they are not ready to fast.

  455. Here's what happens. All right, this is

  456. what I've had happen in our even in our

  457. church. I have people who come into our

  458. church and and they do not they've not

  459. read their Bible. Uh they don't have a

  460. prayer life. They don't really know God.

  461. I'm not really even sure if they're

  462. saved, but they want to ask me about

  463. fasting.

  464. And here's the truth about it. It's a

  465. distraction.

  466. Come on.

  467. >> Fasting is a work of the flesh.

  468. >> Come on.

  469. >> In their mind. Well, I want to draw near

  470. to God. And so the Bible I what I I've

  471. been told that if I fast, I can draw

  472. near to God. No. The first thing you

  473. need to do is get saved,

  474. >> right?

  475. >> Amen. You say, "What is it?" Well,

  476. salvation's the number one prerequis

  477. prerequisite for fasting.

  478. >> You can't draw near to somebody with

  479. whom you have no relationship.

  480. >> Right?

  481. And so there's the the principle

  482. salvation number one is primarily and

  483. then you must be spiritfilled. Notice it

  484. again in the text. No man putth a old go

  485. a piece of new cloth onto an old garment

  486. because it tears it. You cannot put

  487. religious works. Here what I'm saying.

  488. All right. You cannot put the works of

  489. Christianity on somebody who is saved

  490. and expect them to make it. You're

  491. >> right. You can't put somebody who's not

  492. saved uh in a Sunday school class and

  493. allow them to teach and then not end up

  494. destroying themselves or everybody

  495. that's listening to them. You're

  496. >> right.

  497. >> You cannot put somebody on a mission

  498. field who is not saved and try to make

  499. them do the work of God. Here's what

  500. happens. I've seen it time and time

  501. again. Children come into the church and

  502. their parents are so eager for them to

  503. serve God and do for God and live for

  504. God. So, they force them into doing

  505. things for God. But here's what happens.

  506. It comes out to their own destruction.

  507. You're right.

  508. >> Because they've never been saved.

  509. >> You're right.

  510. >> Salvation is the prerequisite. You

  511. cannot put spiritual works. You cannot

  512. put a new piece of cloth on an old

  513. garment.

  514. Notice the text. Verse 17. Neither do

  515. men put new wine into old bottles. Now,

  516. that wine there's an imagery of the joy

  517. of the Holy Ghost. So, think about this.

  518. This is an even better picture in this

  519. text. You say, "Well, what is that?"

  520. Well, think about this truth with me for

  521. just a minute. They're a they're trying

  522. to place a work, all right? They're

  523. trying to place a work of the spirit of

  524. God on these men who just have Jesus

  525. around them, but salvation is not in

  526. them at this present time. All right?

  527. The Holy Ghost is not within them.

  528. Salvation is with them. Jesus has saved

  529. them. I know there's a lot of different

  530. truths about all this. They're saved.

  531. Amen. But the Holy Ghost of God's not

  532. taking up residence in their heart.

  533. Jesus is with them. See that with me?

  534. All right. Jesus is with them. And so

  535. while he's near them, they do not need

  536. they do not need to be fasting to draw

  537. near because he is near them. And so

  538. what this means is when he says they you

  539. cannot put wine into old bottles, else

  540. the bottles break and the wine runth

  541. out. You see that? That work is not

  542. going to change. The wine runth out. But

  543. look what the law says. What what did

  544. your Bible say again? The bottles what?

  545. Perish.

  546. The container perishes.

  547. So here's what happens. All right. You

  548. cannot put the pressure of Christianity

  549. on somebody who is not a Christian.

  550. That's about as simple as I know how to

  551. put it. You're

  552. >> right.

  553. >> Prescribing religious works on the

  554. unregenerate man brings sure and

  555. imminent destruction. Let me say this.

  556. There must be regeneration of the soul

  557. for there to be a rendering of the

  558. spirit of God.

  559. >> Right?

  560. >> In order for the presence of God to take

  561. take up residence in the heart of

  562. somebody, they first have to be saved.

  563. >> Right?

  564. >> You say, "Well, I thought that's what

  565. salvation is." And it is. It all happens

  566. at the same time. But without

  567. repentance, there is no regeneration.

  568. And without regeneration, there is no

  569. filling of the Holy Ghost.

  570. You got to clean the vessel out before

  571. the vessel can be filled. You're

  572. >> right.

  573. >> So, the imagery here in the text is that

  574. this work is not to be put on. It's not

  575. to be pressured on these men

  576. who otherwise this work's not needed in

  577. their life. Now, let me say this, all

  578. right, about this text. Now, the Jews,

  579. they're all about the exterior.

  580. And another side of this that you can

  581. see through these verses is that they're

  582. trying to mix make a mixture between law

  583. and grace.

  584. Let me say this. Law and grace are not

  585. the same thing.

  586. >> Jesus came to fulfill the law in order

  587. that he might provide grace. Bible said

  588. in John chapter one, the law came by

  589. Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus

  590. Christ. And so Jesus came to fulfill the

  591. law, but he came to go beyond that and

  592. provide a way that we might be delivered

  593. from the condemnation of the law. And

  594. what these men wanted to do was place

  595. their law on Jesus disciples.

  596. You say, "Well, what's the truth of

  597. this?" Their fasting was fruitless.

  598. >> Think about this. Jesus is right there.

  599. Why are they fasting?

  600. These disciples of John, yes, it was

  601. good that they followed John, but it

  602. wasn't their time. They weren't supposed

  603. to be following John no more. Jesus was

  604. there. John was the forerunner of

  605. Christ. But when Jesus showed up, John

  606. said, "Behold the lamb of God." But you

  607. know what the problem was? There was a

  608. group of men. Even all the way into the

  609. book of Acts, you find the followers of

  610. John that did not follow Christ. And so

  611. what is it? Their fasting was fruitless.

  612. Salvation is a prerequisite. Being

  613. spiritfilled is a prerequisite. But I'll

  614. say this. All right? You've got to be

  615. sanctified.

  616. >> Amen.

  617. >> To fast.

  618. You say, "What is that, preacher? I

  619. thought fasting is a sanctifying work.

  620. Well, it is. But here's the truth. All

  621. right. If you got sin in your life, let

  622. me let me just illustrate it this way.

  623. All right.

  624. If you are presently

  625. committing some sort of sin, if if it's

  626. adultery, lying, whatever it is, it

  627. doesn't it doesn't matter what type of

  628. sin it is. Just fasting from food,

  629. stopping eating, but continuing on in

  630. that lifestyle is not going to get you

  631. anything.

  632. >> You're right.

  633. Fasting is more than just food.

  634. >> Fasting is an emptying out of your heart

  635. to God. You're

  636. >> right.

  637. >> Completely.

  638. >> Let me say this. There's a lot more to

  639. fast from in this day and time than

  640. there was when this was written.

  641. >> You're right.

  642. >> Now, I'm going to give you the truths

  643. about the New Testament fasting. I got

  644. just a few minutes here to talk about

  645. this. Number one, I'd say new fasting in

  646. the New Testament is not commanded. I'll

  647. say it again. It's expected. All right?

  648. It's expected.

  649. What do we fast for? Well, the Bible

  650. teaches us that we're to draw near to

  651. God. When you think about the truth of

  652. fasting, the first time it's seen in the

  653. word of God, the the first time

  654. terminology is used in the book of

  655. Judges is in the book book of Judges

    Judges 20 chapter mention

  656. chapter 20. But the first time the

  657. principle of fasting is seen is in

  658. Leviticus 23. Now listen to what

  659. Leviticus 23 says.

  660. Leviticus chapter 23. This is the only

    Leviticus 23 chapter mention

  661. law that's given

  662. in the Bible. You can mark put this in

  663. your margin. Leviticus 23 verse number

  664. 27.

  665. It's the day of atonement.

  666. Now listen to what Moses says here. Also

  667. on the 10th day of this seventh month,

  668. there shall be a day of atonement. It

  669. shall be a holy convocation unto you,

  670. and ye shall afflict your souls, and

  671. offer an offering made by fire unto the

  672. Lord. Notice the terminology. Ye shall

  673. afflict your souls. Verse 28, ye shall

  674. do no work in that same day, for it is a

  675. day of atonement, to make an atonement

  676. for you before the Lord your God. For

  677. whatsoever so it be that shall not be

  678. afflicted in that same day, shall be cut

  679. off from among his people. And

  680. whatsoever so it be that doeth any work

  681. in that same day, the same soul will I

  682. destroy from among his people, you shall

  683. do no manner of work. It shall be a

  684. statute forever throughout your

  685. generations and all your dwellings. It

  686. shall be unto you a Sabbath of rest, and

  687. ye shall afflict your souls. Now, what

  688. does that mean? What does it mean to

  689. afflict your souls? This is what that

  690. means. It means to to take your flesh

  691. and put it in the pressure cooker,

  692. >> right?

  693. That soul is that inward seat of being

  694. and who you are. Now, you're saved.

  695. Okay? We we realize that this morning.

  696. And when we're we're looking at this law

  697. as a whole, the ceremonial idea of the

  698. of the this dedication here, we don't

  699. follow that. Okay? We realize that. But

  700. the application is the same. It's a

  701. drawing near to God.

  702. It's coming to him. You say, "Well,

  703. where do you see that in the New

  704. Testament?" The illustration is seen

  705. clearly. Acts chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  706. I encourage you to write all these down.

  707. These are these this will teach you what

  708. fasting is. And like I said, this is

  709. just ver very basic overview. It's

  710. nothing deep.

  711. Acts 13:2

    Acts 13:2

  712. Let's look at verse one. Acts 13:1. Now

    Acts 13:1

  713. there were in the church that was

  714. Antioch certain prophets and teachers as

  715. Barnabas and Simeon that was called

  716. Niger and Lucius ofSirene and Manan

  717. which had been brought up with Herod the

  718. tetrarch and Saul. Verse two and they

  719. ministered to the Lord and fasted. The

  720. Holy Ghost said, "Separate me Barnabas

  721. and Saul for the work where to I have

  722. called them." Verse three. And when they

  723. had fasted and prayed, they laid their

  724. hands on them. And laid their hands on

  725. them, they sent them away.

  726. So here's what fasting is for. It's for

  727. the work of the ministry.

  728. And what are they doing in this text?

  729. They're drawing near to God so they know

  730. where they're headed to next.

  731. >> Let me say this. Fasting is a painful

  732. thing. You say, "How is that?" Well,

  733. pretty much the only other context that

  734. you have of fasting, there's another,

  735. uh, group that's given here, uh, chapter

  736. number, let's see here.

  737. Let me get my other verse here. I wrote

  738. it down in my notes over on this other

  739. page.

  740. Matthew chapter 9,

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  741. Acts 14 verse 23.

    Acts 14:23

  742. And when they had ordained them elders

  743. in every church and had prayed with

  744. fasting, they commended them to the Lord

  745. on whom they believed. So they're

  746. sending out elders, missionaries,

  747. preachers fasting for the sending out.

  748. Now listen to what Paul says about

  749. fasting. And I said this already, but

  750. fasting is a grievous thing. Listen to

  751. what he says. 2 Corinthians 6

  752. verse number five.

  753. Listen what he says. 2 Corinthians 6

  754. verse number or verse number four.

  755. Notice this. But in all things approving

  756. ourselves as the ministers of God in

  757. much patience, in afflictions, in

  758. necessities, in distresses. Now all of

  759. this is things he's suffering for the

  760. cause of Christ. Now notice that again.

  761. Much patience, afflictions, necessities,

  762. distresses, strikes, imprisonments. All

  763. of this stuff he's going through for the

  764. ministry. Verse 5. in two months, in

  765. labors, in watchings, in what?

  766. Fastings,

  767. by puress, by knowledge, by

  768. longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy

  769. Ghost, by love unfeigned, by the word of

  770. truth, by the power of God, by the armor

  771. of righteousness on the right hand, on

  772. the left. And what he's saying is is

  773. this is what vindicates our ministry.

  774. This is who we are. Notice that verse

  775. four, but in all things approving

  776. ourselves as the ministers of God. And

  777. then he lists them in in in in

  778. all of these things. Approve who we are

  779. as ministers.

  780. Notice what he says in second

  781. Corinthians chapter number 11

  782. verse number

  783. chap. Let me see and get my right verse

  784. here.

  785. Chapter number 11 verse number

  786. here it is verse 23 again again same

  787. same same truth are they ministers of

  788. Christ I speak as a fool I more in

  789. labors more abundant in stripes above

  790. measure in prisons more frequent in

  791. deaths off of the Jews five times

  792. received I 40 stripes save one thrice

  793. was I beaten with rods once was I stoned

  794. thrice I suffered shipwreck. A night and

  795. a day I've been in the deep, in

  796. journeyings often in perils of waters,

  797. in perils of robbers, in perils by my

  798. own countrymen, in perils by the

  799. heathen, in perils in the city, in

  800. perils in the wilderness, in perils in

  801. the sea, in perils among false brethren.

  802. Notice verse 27. in weariness and

  803. painfulness, in watchings often, in

  804. hunger and thirst, in fastings often,

  805. in cold and nakedness. Verse 28, beside

  806. those things that are without, that

  807. which cometh upon me daily, the care of

  808. all the churches.

  809. You say, what's your emphasis of saying

  810. that? Paul lists all of the afflictions

  811. and all of the struggles that he faces

  812. in the ministry with fasting.

  813. Fasting is not a joyous thing. If

  814. somebody's really fasting, you're not

  815. going to know about it.

  816. >> You're right.

  817. >> You're not going to know about it.

  818. That's why Jesus said in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  819. 6, he said, "When you fast, don't be as

  820. the Pharisees. They disfigure their

  821. faces." What was he talking about? He

  822. said, "They make themselves look like

  823. they're fasting." Most of the time,

  824. they're really not. All they want is the

  825. praise of men,

  826. exalting their facade of holiness.

  827. If somebody's fasting, you're not going

  828. to know about it.

  829. >> You'll see it in other places, but not

  830. always. You see, because fasting is not

  831. for the glory of men. You say,

  832. "Preacher, why should we fast?" Simply

  833. simply this, because you want something

  834. from God.

  835. >> That's right.

  836. >> This is why fasting doesn't happen much.

  837. I I'm ashamed to admit I've not fasted

  838. as much as I should have down through

  839. the years and these beginning years of

  840. ministry, but but I I'll say this about

  841. it. We just don't want it bad enough.

  842. >> You're right.

  843. >> We got revival coming up. And I preached

  844. this today for this reason. I'm going to

  845. be dealing with subjects over the next

  846. coming weeks. Going to deal I dealt with

  847. this today. Going to deal with some

  848. others coming up. Just subjects

  849. throughout the scripture. And uh reason

  850. I brought this up today is I really

  851. believe this works.

  852. You say you just believe it works. I

  853. know it works. I've seen it work. I've

  854. watched it work. And here's what I want

  855. to pose to you this morning. We're the

  856. This is the Sunday school crowd. The

  857. faithful group. These are the ones that

  858. read your Bible and pray and live for

  859. God the best that you know how. This is

  860. what I want to ask you, okay? Would you

  861. commit to fast

  862. one day?

  863. You say, "What do I need to do in that

  864. fasting?" Well, it's not just missing

  865. all three meals for one day.

  866. >> This is what fasting is. It's taking

  867. that time when you would otherwise be

  868. eating and praying.

  869. >> Right?

  870. >> That's what fasting is from the

  871. scripture. You notice in Paul's, you can

  872. look back those texts 2 Corinthians 6, 2

  873. Corinthians 11, he mentions the term

  874. watching alongside of fasting. It's

  875. right there close. What does that mean?

  876. Well, prayer is what that is. That

  877. watching as you watch and pray lest you

  878. enter into that's what Jesus said. The

  879. spirit indeed is willing but the flesh

  880. is weak. So what you're doing is when

  881. you fast you're saying Lord I need this

  882. more than the only thing that can make

  883. me physically survive.

  884. >> Right?

  885. >> You can't live long without food. But

  886. I'll tell you this. You can't live at

  887. all without God.

  888. >> That's right.

  889. >> This I want to ask you this morning. If

  890. everybody in this room fasted one day

  891. for meeting coming up this month, it

  892. would blow your mind what God would do.

  893. You say, "You really believe that?" I

  894. don't just believe, I know it

  895. because it's scriptural. And that's the

  896. reason why I want to put this out to you

  897. today. All right? And let me say this.

  898. If you're not saved, you can't do it.

  899. If you're not spiritfilled,

  900. you can't do it.

  901. You got to make sure that you're right

  902. with God

  903. >> before you decide to do that. I I

  904. churches I I'll say this on and you can

  905. turn that off, brother. That live

  906. stream.
