  7. Pastor Charlie Branch with a word from

  8. God.

  9. All right. as you find in your seek if

  10. you could find Matthew's gospel.

  11. Matthew's gospel chapter number five

  12. and uh

  13. felt impressed the Lord to go back to

  14. this text. I started a series and I had

  15. uh I think it's six messages laid out in

  16. this series and I think it was over I

  17. guess it's probably been about a year

  18. ago 10 months ago I started it and uh

  19. God just directed me away from it and I

  20. never went back to it. So we're going to

  21. look at it tonight. Just felt impressed

  22. the Lord to go back here and I don't

  23. know for what reason but I'm just going

  24. to be obedient to the Lord. So,

  25. Matthew's Gospel, chapter 5

  26. this evening. And uh I'm going to do my

  27. best to try to keep it in Bible study

  28. trim tonight, but that may not happen.

  29. So, you pray for me and uh we'll just

  30. preach. Do whatever God says. Amen.

  31. >> Matthew's Gospel chapter 5. And uh I

  32. want to preface this tonight by saying I

  33. don't have any um inkling of anything

  34. going on tonight. not not preaching this

  35. just just just because um I think

  36. there's something happening. If there

  37. is, I guess the Holy Ghost should bear

  38. witness to that, but I'm just preaching

  39. what God put on my heart tonight. And I

  40. hope it's just preventative maintenance

  41. to us. All right? And we'll deal with

  42. this subject tonight. Matthew's Gospel

  43. chapter 5 verse number 27.

  44. Matthew's Gospel chapter number 5 verse

  45. number 27. Our first message in this

  46. series, those you was here uh last year

  47. during this time. Thankfully, we got

  48. some visitors in here, has been coming

  49. with us since then. We we let off the

  50. first message of this uh series of of

  51. this chapter here talking about uh pres

  52. preservation. The first message there

  53. was uh entitled preserving peace. I

  54. don't know if anybody remembers that. Um

  55. but we dealt with verse number 21 uh of

  56. the chapter down through verse number

  57. 26. and uh talked about preserving peace

  58. and unity. And tonight we're going to

  59. talk about preserving purity. And uh I

  60. want pray ask the Lord to help us one

  61. more time, then we'll read the text.

  62. Father, thank you for this time tonight.

  63. Thank you, God, for your many blessings.

  64. And Lord, for allowing us to study this

  65. scripture together tonight. I pray you'd

  66. give us uncction and liberty. And I pray

  67. you'd help us preach and demonstration

  68. the spirit with power. And God, I ask

  69. you, Father, that you'd remove any

  70. hindrance tonight. And Lord, I pray God

  71. tonight this is just preventative

  72. maintenance for us. But God, you know

  73. what we need. And so I pray that uh

  74. you'd help us be obedient to the word of

  75. God tonight. And we'll be sure to give

  76. you thanks for what you do because you

  77. alone are worthy. And we ask it in

  78. Jesus' name. Amen. Verse number 27 of

  79. Matthew chapter number five. Jesus says

  80. here, words of read, ye have heard that

  81. it was said by them of old time, thou

  82. shalt not commit adultery. But I say

  83. unto you, that whosoever lookth on a

  84. woman to lust after her, hath committed

  85. adultery with her already in his heart,

  86. and if thy right eye offend thee, pluck

  87. it out, and cast it from thee. For it is

  88. profitable for thee that one of thy

  89. members should perish, and not that thy

  90. whole body should be cast into hell. And

  91. if thy right hand offend thee, cut it

  92. off, and cast it from thee. For it is

  93. profitable for thee that one of thy

  94. members should perish and that and not

  95. that thy whole body should be cast into

  96. hell. Now you say, preacher, where does

  97. the subject come in for preservation in

  98. this text? Well, if you look back with

  99. me into this chapter, you notice verse

  100. number 17. Jesus makes a statement

  101. concerning his ministry on the earth.

  102. And I want you to listen what he says.

  103. Verse 17 of chapter 5. He says, "Think

  104. not that I'm come to destroy the law or

  105. the prophets." Look what he says. I'm

  106. not come to destroy, but to fulfill. And

  107. so, the ministry of Christ on the earth

  108. was that he was to fulfill all the law

  109. of God. Now, we know tonight he's the

  110. only man that's ever been born of woman

  111. that has kept the entire law. And thus,

  112. in his perfection, he fulfilled the law.

  113. And thankfully for you and I tonight, he

  114. went beyond the law. after that he

  115. fulfilled it dying as the sacrifice on

  116. Calvar's cross he arose again not only

  117. to be the sacrifice but to be our great

  118. high priest and to offer that sacrifice

  119. upon the throne in heaven thus offering

  120. us the grace of God and that is why John

  121. could say in John chapter number one

  122. that the law came by Moses but grace and

  123. truth came by Jesus Christ and so the

  124. offering of salvation that beyond the

  125. law came to us because Jesus was the the

  126. only one to ever fulfill the law. And so

  127. here in this preser preserving thought

  128. here, he's dealt with the subject here

  129. in verse number 18. He says, "For verily

  130. I say unto you, till heaven and earth

  131. pass, one jot or one tit shall no wise

  132. pass from the law till all be

  133. fulfilled." And so all of this truth

  134. Jesus is expounding. And the greatest

  135. sermon that's ever been given in all of

  136. history is these three chapters, Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  137. chapter 5 down through chapter number

  138. seven. and he is preaching to them the

  139. principles of the kingdom. Now, it's

  140. applicable to you and I tonight. And he

  141. has dealt with the subject there of

  142. murder in verse number 21. Thou shalt

  143. not kill. We know that there in the ten

  144. commandments. And now he's going to list

  145. another one here in the text in verse

  146. number 27. Notice what your Bible says.

  147. Ye have heard that it was said by them

  148. of old time, thou shalt not commit

  149. adultery. So here he has listed of

  150. course this being I believe it's the

  151. sixth commandment in number here uh in

  152. the numeric of the ten commandments and

  153. I want to give you three things out of

  154. these verses tonight concerning this

  155. subject on preserving purity. Now, in a

  156. personal sense tonight, if there's

  157. anything that we need to be holding up

  158. in a in a big way in this day and time,

  159. it's this matter of purity.

  160. Especially in our church, amongst the

  161. ranks of our leadership and all of the

  162. congregation, this should be our utmost

  163. priority that we be blameless in every

  164. respect. Nobody should be able to bring

  165. an accusation against us and then they

  166. have to question and say, "Well, we just

  167. don't know about him. We've seen the way

  168. he's acted before.

  169. >> Amen.

  170. >> No, it ought we ought to be blameless.

  171. Amen.

  172. >> And so when I consider this text, Jesus

  173. deals first of all with the commandment

  174. here in the text. And let me say this,

  175. Christ is dealing in this chapter with

  176. generational decay. Now, that's what

  177. we're dealing with. You say, "What do

  178. you mean by generational decay?" Well,

  179. the truth here in this text was

  180. expressed, of course, that is the the

  181. commandment there that thou shalt not

  182. commit adultery. But you understand the

  183. truth did not minim was not minimized,

  184. but the truth had become watered down.

  185. Now, we know that that's the way it is

  186. in our day and time. And we've you've

  187. heard it said by from this pullpit, and

  188. you're hearing it said from anybody that

  189. desires to preach the word of God and do

  190. it properly, that the people who are

  191. defining the terms in this day and time

  192. are winning the battle. And what's

  193. happened in this text is is that there

  194. has been a redefinition of terms. And

  195. Jesus is going to deal with that in the

  196. text. And so he takes this truth here

  197. directly from the law of God, the book

  198. of Leviticus chap of Exodus chapter

  199. number 20. And he deals with this truth

  200. here in verse number 27. And uh I'll say

  201. this, he's already dealt with the

  202. subject of murder, but now he's going to

  203. deal with a subject of adultery, wanting

  204. to preserve purity. So note number one

  205. tonight with me, the quotation from

  206. verse number 27. He says, "Ye have heard

  207. that it was said by them of old time,

  208. thou shalt not commit adultery." So you

  209. notice first of all there the last

  210. phrase of the verse. We're going to

  211. start there and work backwards. You know

  212. the precept that's mentioned. Exodus 20

  213. and verse number 14 literally declares

  214. the same fate there or the same law that

  215. Moses recorded that God inspired given

  216. give to him that was wrote down on those

  217. tablets of stone that thou shalt not

  218. commit adultery. And so that is found

  219. there in Exodus 20 and verse14. But then

  220. there's not only the precept in verse

  221. 27, but there is the patriarchs. And

  222. notice that he have heard that it was

  223. said, notice that phrase, by them of old

  224. time. Who's he referring to? Well, he's

  225. referring to the fathers. He's referring

  226. to Moses. He's referring to the Old

  227. Testament patriarchs. Amen. And this was

  228. the law that had been passed down. And

  229. really, it comes even to their own

  230. fathers, those that were older than

  231. them. It had been passed down. He said,

  232. "You've heard by them that were of old

  233. time." But here's what I want to deal

  234. with for just a minute of time in this

  235. quotation. You note the precept, the end

  236. of the verse, the patriarchs that he

  237. mentions in the middle of the verse. But

  238. notice the problem. You say, "What is

  239. the problem that you see in this verse?"

  240. Well, notice verse 27. What's that first

  241. phrase? Ye have heard.

  242. Now, you may not see the problem on the

  243. face of the text, but when you study

  244. history, Jewish history, what you're

  245. going to discover is, and really, if you

  246. study your Bible, and you look at the

  247. Pharisees from a biblical standpoint,

  248. you're going to see a people who had

  249. engrossed themselves in this sin. Say,

  250. "What do you mean by that?" Well, what

  251. they had done is is they had redefined

  252. adultery. for it to own the sin of

  253. adultery was only the action of uh

  254. sexual relations outside of marriage.

  255. That's all adultery was to the Pharisee.

  256. And you can look at Roman uh culture

  257. during this time and Greek culture.

  258. Greek culture was especially bad in this

  259. culture. Women were pretty much just

  260. thrown to the dogs in Greek culture. Um

  261. I read a little bit on that today just

  262. to give you a little illustration. Um,

  263. we're kind of seeing some of that crowd

  264. over there in the Middle East right now

  265. getting their uh their socks bombed off.

  266. Amen. But Greek culture, this is the way

  267. that they treated women. Men would marry

  268. wives and their wives were expected

  269. never to leave home to stay there. And

  270. if they were if they were just any bit

  271. out of the way toward their husband at

  272. home, their husband could divorce them

  273. for any reason at all. But what you know

  274. about the Greek culture is is that those

  275. men would go to that temple of that

  276. goddess and they would commit lwdness

  277. there in the temple with those go with

  278. those women those prostitutes that would

  279. work in the temple. They wouldn't think

  280. nothing about that. But the women were

  281. treated like dogs in the Greek culture.

  282. And so this is all around Roman culture,

  283. Greek culture. It's all around the

  284. Pharisees. And because of the

  285. degradation I remember I said the

  286. generational decay sin has crept in. And

  287. so the Pharisees have defined they

  288. really believe that they can put away

  289. their wife for any reason.

  290. But Jesus says in this text he reminds

  291. them. He says thou shalt not commit

  292. adultery. Now here's the truth about it.

  293. They all would have said amen to that.

  294. We would say amen to that, wouldn't we?

  295. But the truth is Jesus knew that what he

  296. says in the next verse applies to the

  297. verse before it

  298. >> without even having to say it. You say,

  299. "What do you mean?" Well, I'm going

  300. somewhere. Stay with me. You see the

  301. quotation of the verse. And that's

  302. that's quickly the first point. But

  303. notice second of all this seed and

  304. notice the quickening in verse number

  305. 28. What do I mean by that? Well, it

  306. means to that word quicken means to

  307. bring to light. Well, look what Jesus

  308. said. Verse 28. He says, "Ye have heard

  309. in verse 27, verse 28, look what he

  310. says." But I say unto you that whosoever

  311. lookth on a woman to lust after her,

  312. hath committed adultery with her already

  313. in his heart. So obviously here we need

  314. to know first of all that in the context

  315. Jesus is speaking to a group of men.

  316. From what I've studied, there's not

  317. women present at this time. Jesus is

  318. speaking to his disciples, to the

  319. Pharisees, and to the men that were

  320. congregated around him. And this is what

  321. he says. He says, "Whosoever lookth on a

  322. woman to lust after her hath committed

  323. adultery." So what he has done is is he

  324. has taken the Old Testament commandment,

  325. "Thou shalt not commit adultery." And

  326. what he has done is is he's not added to

  327. it. All right? He's not adding to the

  328. commandment. You know what he's done?

  329. He's he's shined the light on it.

  330. >> Right?

  331. >> You see what the Pharisees had been

  332. doing so long as they'd muddied the

  333. waters of this thing. They would say,

  334. "Well, just just adultery is just the

  335. act outside of marriage and nothing

  336. else." But the truth is on the pages of

  337. scripture, Jesus is shining light on

  338. their sin. What is the problem? The

  339. problem is is that the Pharisees always

  340. only looked on the external. And you

  341. know what? If we're not careful, we'll

  342. do the same thing.

  343. >> You're right.

  344. >> We'll always just look on the external.

  345. But the truth is, the greatest sins are

  346. the sins of the heart. And I notice in

  347. this text, Jesus here is reigniting the

  348. inner workings of this command. You see,

  349. this principle was in the mind of God

  350. when he pinned the commandment. Jesus is

  351. not revealing new truth to them.

  352. You know what he's doing? He's bringing

  353. back to light what they had put swept

  354. under the rug.

  355. >> Right?

  356. >> And you know what preachers are dealing

  357. with in this day and time?

  358. >> Generational decay

  359. >> where truth has been watered down.

  360. right?

  361. >> And muddied up

  362. >> and said, "Well, it just means this and

  363. nothing else,

  364. >> right?

  365. >> But it's so much more than that."

  366. >> And so Jesus here begins concerning this

  367. quickening. Notice what he says. We

  368. we've seen the the precept in the

  369. quotation in verse number 27, but notice

  370. the look that's mentioned in verse 28.

  371. Very simple stuff tonight. And look what

  372. he says. But I say unto you that

  373. whosoever lookth lookketh. Now that word

  374. lookketh in in this text, this context

  375. here, there's several different words in

  376. the New Testament for this word look.

  377. But this word look here in verse number

  378. 28, it means to look as a voluntary

  379. observation.

  380. It's an act of the will. It's a willful.

  381. It is a decision to behold. Fyer's

  382. dictionary says this to turn the eyes to

  383. anything to look at, to look upon or to

  384. gaze at. So this is not a glance. This

  385. is not just a something that runs into

  386. the line of the sight but then

  387. disappears never to see it again or

  388. never to give it another glance. But

  389. this is a willful gaze. This is a

  390. desirefilled look. It's not just a

  391. moment, but it is a period. It's a it's

  392. extended. It's not just a short glance.

  393. And you say, "Well, what's the truth of

  394. that?" Well, remember the Pharisees when

  395. they would look at this commandment,

  396. they would say only the action was a

  397. sin.

  398. >> Right?

  399. >> But you said Jesus says the look,

  400. write this in the margin of your Bible

  401. if you like to do that. I wrote this

  402. down this afternoon. The act is is never

  403. committed before the acquisition.

  404. >> Right?

  405. >> I'll say it again. The act is never

  406. committed

  407. before the acquisition. What do you mean

  408. by that? Well, acquisition is that

  409. zeroing in.

  410. Only then and only then. You can't

  411. commit something that you've not first

  412. latched on to.

  413. >> You're right.

  414. >> Amen. You can't commit a sin that you've

  415. not first already decided in your mind

  416. that you're going to do that. Jesus is

  417. bringing to light the will problem. Now,

  418. what is this? Well, I I think about this

  419. sin. And you think about this look is

  420. illustrated all throughout the word of

  421. God. When David, the Bible says 2 Samuel

  422. chap 11 and verse number two, he went

  423. out upon his housetop. Now there's a

  424. host of other sins that surround what

  425. David did. But what happened was the

  426. Bible says when David saw,

  427. >> right?

  428. >> What did he see? He saw Ba Sheeba.

  429. He saw her. And because he saw her, he

  430. then sent for her. HIS HIS SEEING her

  431. was not momentary, but it was

  432. lengthened.

  433. I thought about this. Not only David

  434. seeing Bath Sheba, but Achen seeing that

  435. garment in the book of Joshua chapter 7

    Joshua 7 chapter mention

  436. and verse number 21.

  437. Achen, the text literally says, "When I

  438. saw," you can look at the verse, first

  439. three words of verse, "when I saw," he

  440. laid be laid eyes on that Babylonian

  441. garment and that wedge of gold and all

  442. of that other stuff. And what it did is

  443. it caused Israel to be defiled. And

  444. Israel lost the battle and men died

  445. because of his sin,

  446. >> because of what he saw. When Piper's

  447. wife, the Bible says, Genesis chapter 39

    Genesis 39 chapter mention

  448. and verse number 7, she laid her eyes

  449. upon Joseph. She cast her eyes upon

  450. Joseph. It was a look.

  451. Let me say this. If you got problem with

  452. wondering eyes, I got more to say to you

  453. in just a minute. You need to deal with

  454. that.

  455. >> You're right. You see these looks here

  456. is mentioned. He says in verse number

  457. 28, "Whosoever look," let me let me just

  458. say this. Back up and just say what the

  459. text says. Ver notice in verse 28,

  460. what's that word right before lookth?

  461. Whosoever. Let me say this context is to

  462. men, but the the same truth applies to

  463. women. You're

  464. >> right.

  465. >> Because this matter of adultery, it is

  466. physical between a man and a woman, but

  467. it is psychological as well.

  468. >> You're right. Adultery before it's ever

  469. a physical act. It's a psychological

  470. acquisition. It's a holding on to the

  471. mind.

  472. You create a fantasy in your mind with

  473. somebody that you've never even met

  474. before. It happens all the time in this

  475. day and time.

  476. >> Right?

  477. >> I heard a story about a man, his wife.

  478. She got hooked up with a man online.

  479. Never saw him before in her life. And

  480. and this man and wife, they had a

  481. ministry in a marriage. and and she

  482. journeyed out of town one weekend, made

  483. up some kind of lie, journeyed out of

  484. town, and when she went out of town, she

  485. met up with this man that she'd never

  486. met before, and they had an affair

  487. because she had generated an image in

  488. her mind, somebody that she'd never even

  489. seen before.

  490. >> Right?

  491. >> You say, "What is that?" Well, it was a

  492. look of the heart along before it was a

  493. look with the eyes.

  494. >> Right?

  495. >> Oh, friend, that's good preaching

  496. tonight.

  497. The look is what is the con is where it

  498. begins. And you notice what he says here

  499. in the text. He says, "Whosoever lookth

  500. on a woman." Now, I remind you, he's

  501. talking to men here in the text. But the

  502. truth applies the same way. It is the it

  503. is that look, it's the lust. It's a gaze

  504. filled with desire for that which is

  505. forbidden. Now, the Jews would say this

  506. that it was only a adultery was only sin

  507. when it was committed with somebody who

  508. was who was already married.

  509. But we know that's not true.

  510. >> Right?

  511. >> Adultery is if you're married, it has to

  512. do with any

  513. other person.

  514. >> Right?

  515. >> I'll say this. It goes beyond that. It

  516. goes beyond all the way to those who are

  517. not married.

  518. >> You say, "How can it be adultery and

  519. somebody not be married?" The truth is

  520. before you get married, you already

  521. belong to somebody else. You're

  522. >> right.

  523. >> Oh, you don't hear that much preached in

  524. this day and time.

  525. >> You belong to somebody else. You say,

  526. "Preacher, well, I've not committed

  527. those vows." But you ought to be

  528. preserving yourself,

  529. >> right?

  530. >> For that person. When you when you go

  531. out and and I've heard stories like

  532. this, men and and girls alike, they'll

  533. go out on the night before their wedding

  534. and they'll live it up and do all kinds

  535. of unspeakable things.

  536. You know what they've done? They've

  537. committed adultery. You say, "Preacher,

  538. well, they weren't married." Well, they

  539. just sinned against the spouse. They

  540. were just fixing to marry.

  541. >> Right?

  542. >> Adultery is any sexual sin outside of

  543. marriage. You say, "Preacher, that's

  544. fornication." Same definition.

  545. >> Right?

  546. >> You say, "Where does it start?" It

  547. starts in the mind.

  548. >> Notice this. There's the look, there's

  549. the lust that's mentioned. Verse number

  550. 28. Whosoever lookth on a woman to lust

  551. after her. Now this defines here the

  552. will in the text. This lust it means

  553. there he's determined or he's made a

  554. decision in his heart. That lust means

  555. to set the heart upon that is to long

  556. for. James said this James chapter

  557. number one concerning the matter of

  558. lust. The Bible definition of the word

  559. lust. If you don't have it in your

  560. margin I encourage you to put it there.

  561. Listen to what he says. James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  562. verse number 14. But every man is

  563. tempted when he has drawn away of his

  564. own lust and enticed. Verse 15. Then

  565. when lust hath conceived, it bringeth

  566. forth sin. And sin when it is finished

  567. bringeth forth death.

  568. >> So lust is the entrance. You've heard

  569. people talk about a gateway drug. Lust

  570. is where it starts.

  571. >> Right?

  572. >> It's what enters it's it's the entrance

  573. of your heart into that decision for

  574. sinfulness. Now see these Pharisees,

  575. they they they think sin's external.

  576. Well, let me remind you this. This is

  577. not a New Testament thought that sin is

  578. first internal. You say, "What do you

  579. mean by that?" Well, David knew that sin

  580. was internal.

  581. >> Turn with me to Psalm 19.

  582. Psalm 19. You say, "Preacher, I I don't

  583. believe that sin is an external. It's

  584. what I commit." Well, let me tell you

  585. this. Bible definition of sin is

  586. anything I think, say, or do that

  587. displeases God.

  588. >> Amen.

  589. >> Listen to what David says in Psalms 19

  590. verse number 12.

  591. Psalms 19:12. Who can understand his

    Psalms 19:12

  592. errors? Cleanse thou me from what?

  593. Secret faults. Verse 13. Keep back thy

  594. servant also from what?

  595. Presumptuous sins. Let them not have

  596. dominion over me. Then shall I be

  597. upright, and thou shalt be innocent from

  598. the great transgression. What that

  599. describes is is sin on the inside before

  600. it becomes on the outside. Let me say

  601. this. The truth is is that our our sin

  602. our sin the truth about our sin is that

  603. before the conclusion ever comes the

  604. consideration is exceeding sinful.

  605. You're

  606. >> right.

  607. >> Before you commit the sin, the

  608. consideration of committing the act is

  609. sinful. You're

  610. >> right.

  611. >> That's what Jesus is saying.

  612. Look what he says again. Whosoever

  613. lookth on a woman to lust after her.

  614. What's he saying? That set the heart

  615. upon

  616. means the innermost being of man has

  617. decided this is what I want.

  618. >> Right?

  619. >> You know what? You may not get that

  620. thing, but you know what? The decision

  621. that you made in your heart is sinful.

  622. >> Right?

  623. >> You say, "Preacher, what does that

  624. illustrate? I've never done anything

  625. like that. I I've never committed

  626. adultery, anything like that." But

  627. here's here's what he's illustrating.

  628. He's illustrating how sinful your flesh

  629. is,

  630. >> right?

  631. >> That by look, you're condemned not by

  632. the action, but by the acquisition. I

  633. can't I feel like I can't say that

  634. enough. Even before it ever happens.

  635. Notice what he says here in the verse.

  636. Whosoever lookth on woman to lust of her

  637. committh adultery with her already,

  638. notice this, in his heart. Now, I'm

  639. butchering this outline tonight. I got

  640. so much I want to tell you, but I'm just

  641. I'm just rolling through here. Okay? You

  642. see the look in this this thought, the

  643. quickening I'm talking about. He's

  644. bringing this commandment to light. All

  645. of this was already there. Okay? All of

  646. this was already there. Jesus is not

  647. telling them something that they should

  648. not have known.

  649. >> You're right.

  650. >> The truth is, if it's wrong to commit

  651. the action with somebody, wouldn't we

  652. know that it's wrong to think about it?

  653. >> You're right.

  654. That's our own nature. We We know that

  655. by salvation. The Holy Ghost when you

  656. when you start to think of a a cuss word

  657. or something like that, the Holy Ghost

  658. said,

  659. >> "What is that?" That's new life on the

  660. inside telling you, "HEY, THAT AIN'T

  661. RIGHT NO MORE."

  662. >> RIGHT?

  663. >> Never was right. But you know what I'm

  664. saying.

  665. The verse you see, you see the look, the

  666. lust, but now notice the location. What

  667. What is the location? Verse 28. He's

  668. committed adultery with her already in

  669. his heart. His heart. And I said this

  670. already, but this this word here has to

  671. do with the innermost being a man. It's

  672. the center and seat of spiritual life

  673. there, sis. And I thought about this.

  674. You study the word heart in the New

  675. Testament. It literally is the same

  676. across the board. Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  677. verse number 10. The Bible says, "With

  678. the heart man believeth under

  679. righteousness. With a mouth confession

  680. is made under salvation." You know that

  681. same word translated is the same word

  682. heart that's in this verse.

  683. >> You're right.

  684. >> It's the same word for heart that's used

  685. just over a few chapters here. Let me

  686. find it in my notes here. It's in the

  687. book of Matthew, chapter number 15.

  688. Matthew chapter 15 verse number 19.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  689. Listen to what Jesus says about the

  690. heart.

  691. Same word. Same word used for salvation.

  692. Romans 10:10 19. For out of the heart

    Romans 10:10

  693. proceed evil thoughts, murders,

  694. adulteries, fornications, thefts, false

  695. witness, blasphemies. These are the

  696. things which defile a man. That heart,

  697. it is the innermost part. And this is

  698. where that originates. You say,

  699. "Preacher, well, what does it have to do

  700. with the look?" Well, you see, it was

  701. the look that that started the heart

  702. wheels turning. You ever seen the image,

  703. you know, you heard people talk about,

  704. you know, the little squirrel in their

  705. brain on the hamster wheel, you know,

  706. the little squirrel on the wheel.

  707. The imagery here is this is that the

  708. eyes, just like you would put a nut in

  709. front of that squirrel and it would

  710. start running or you know, you get the

  711. imagery.

  712. The look is what starts the work

  713. turning.

  714. >> Right

  715. >> now, stay with that. Don't lose that

  716. thought. Okay, this this location

  717. reveals in the centermost being a part

  718. of the heart. Number one, man's heart is

  719. deceitful. We know the text. The Bible

  720. says that uh that the heart's deceitful

  721. above all things and desperately wicked.

  722. Who can know it? But I want to remind

  723. you again, the desire is just as sinful

  724. as the deed.

  725. >> You're right.

  726. >> The desire to commit sin is just as

  727. sinful in the eyes of God. You say,

  728. "Preacher, well, God wouldn't look upon

  729. a man who wants to kill his brother and

  730. a man that did kill his brother the same

  731. way." No, you're wrong about that.

  732. Because what did he say in the chapter

  733. just before or the text just before?

  734. Look what he says. Verse number 21, he

  735. said, "Ye have heard that it was said by

  736. them of old time, thou shalt not kill,

  737. and whosoever shall kill shall be in

  738. danger danger of the judgment." Verse

  739. 22, "But I say unto you that whosoever

  740. is angry with his brother without a

  741. cause shall be in danger of the

  742. judgment. You say, "Preacher, how is

  743. that?" Well, you see, God's judicial

  744. standpoint for sin ain't the same as

  745. ours.

  746. >> You're right.

  747. >> We measure sin a lot differently than

  748. God does. You just say, "How is that,

  749. preacher?" Well, the truth is tonight,

  750. if go if we were measured up by God's

  751. standards, you know what? We would all

  752. be guilty of the same sins that the

  753. people on death row were guilty of.

  754. >> You're right.

  755. >> Think about that for a minute.

  756. the murderer that's on death row,

  757. the adulterer, the fornicator, the

  758. idoltor. You know what Jesus is telling

  759. us? By our thoughts, we're just as

  760. guilty.

  761. >> Right?

  762. >> So the next time you judge somebody,

  763. >> come on.

  764. >> Because of how they look or what they

  765. did, you just remember you're guilty of

  766. the same things.

  767. >> Right?

  768. >> You say, "Preacher, but I'm not."

  769. Listen, listen to me. You got to

  770. understand what I'm saying. In the eyes

  771. of God, this is how sinful your sin is.

  772. That's

  773. >> right.

  774. >> This is how much it stinks in his

  775. nostrils.

  776. This is why Jesus had to die.

  777. Because the the preacher's kid on on the

  778. church row is just as bad off as the man

  779. on death row

  780. because of his sin. See, this the

  781. thought the sins of the mind. We think

  782. so much. We think so many times that

  783. that it's, you know, we're we're here

  784. and that you or we're here and they're

  785. over here. You know, that's the way. But

  786. it's not the case.

  787. God looks at our sin and he sees the

  788. desire, not only the deed.

  789. >> You know, we we look on the outward

  790. appearance. What What does the Bible

  791. say? God lookth on the heart.

  792. >> Right?

  793. >> I got somewhere something I want to give

  794. you tonight. Okay? And I want you to

  795. remember what I'm going to tell you. All

  796. right? We we got the quotation. We see

  797. the quickening. the quotation of the

  798. commandment, the quickening of this

  799. commandment. Jesus has brought it to

  800. light. He's he's he's he's shined the

  801. light on this commandment. Said, "Look,

  802. boys, it ain't just the action, but it's

  803. it's down to your thinking,

  804. >> right?"

  805. >> And the truth is, if we'd be honest,

  806. look, you say, "Preacher, you can't say

  807. everybody in here has done this." Pretty

  808. much yes.

  809. >> Actually, I can say yes. You say, "How

  810. is that?" that. Well, the Bible says if

  811. you offend in one point, you're guilty

  812. of all.

  813. >> So, I can say yes. We're all guilty.

  814. >> Well, that'll change your perspective,

  815. won't it? Notice this third one. I'm

  816. done. We see the quotation of the

  817. commandment, the quickening of the

  818. commandment. Notice the query in the

  819. commandment. You say, "What do you

  820. mean?" Well, notice what Jesus says in

  821. verse 29.

  822. He puts that word and in there,

  823. continued statement. Look what he says.

  824. And if, notice that next word, if.

  825. What does if always imply? There's a

  826. question. Look what he says. And if thy

  827. right hand, right eye offend thee, pluck

  828. it out. Now, we we stumble over this

  829. verse. I'm telling you, I've listened to

  830. people fall over this. I fell over this

  831. verse. The truth is, it's not that hard

  832. to understand. Listen to what he says.

  833. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck

  834. it out, cast it from thee. For it is

  835. profitable for thee that one of thy

  836. members should perish, and not that the

  837. whole body should be cast into hell. And

  838. if thy right hand offend thee, cut it

  839. off, and cast it from thee. For it is

  840. profitable for thee that one of thy

  841. members should perish, and not that thy

  842. whole body should be cast into hell.

  843. Now, remember, we're talking about

  844. preserving purity here. This is number

  845. one. I want you to understand this is

  846. how serious God looks at this matter of

  847. purity.

  848. If it's going to cause you to sin, what

  849. God created you with, he would rather

  850. you not have it.

  851. >> Right?

  852. >> Now, what's the truth in this? You

  853. notice two things. And I've already used

  854. the word a bunch through this message,

  855. but you notice first of all, verse 29,

  856. the query, there's the acquisition that

  857. has to do with the sight. Is that zoning

  858. in on? You need to be careful what

  859. you're zeroing in on.

  860. Amen.

  861. >> Be careful what you zoning your sight in

  862. on. Now, now notice what he says about

  863. this. If thy right eye offend thee. Now,

  864. what does that mean? That that means

  865. simply means he's saying if your right

  866. eye causes you to sin,

  867. if it causes you to stumble, if it is a

  868. stumbling block to you, if it if your

  869. right eye is scandalous, that's the

  870. literal word that's used. If it's

  871. scandalous to your body, notice what he

  872. says. Pluck it out

  873. and cast it from thee. Now, I want you

  874. to think about this with me. He mentions

  875. what he notice what he says verse 29

  876. just to make it make it even more

  877. emphasized. If thy right eye

  878. now for most of us that's the strong eye

  879. >> right

  880. >> for most of us that's the dominant eye.

  881. It's the one if you you're a man you

  882. shoot a gun you look down a barrel what

  883. do you look with?

  884. It's the one you lean on.

  885. >> But it's not only the strong one. It's

  886. the sinful one. Look what he says. If it

  887. offend thee,

  888. though it be the best, if it is sinful,

  889. it is still deserving of being removed.

  890. Doesn't that teach you a truth?

  891. Just because you're the best, let me

  892. just put this out there. It's not really

  893. in the text, but just because you're the

  894. best in the flesh, if you're sinful,

  895. all righteousness is as what? Filthy

  896. rags. If thy right, I offend thee, pluck

  897. it out. Now you say, preacher, it says

  898. in the verse, he says, it's better if

  899. the one of thy members should perish,

  900. not that thy whole body should be cast

  901. into hell. You say, preacher, I'm saved.

  902. I can't go to hell. How does this apply

  903. to me? Well, I I thought about this.

  904. Okay, just just because you you may say,

  905. I'm saved so I don't have to live in

  906. fear as hell as Jesus says in this text.

  907. This may be true, but your eyes are

  908. already supposed to be plugged out.

  909. You say, "Preacher, I still got both my

  910. eyes."

  911. No, matter of fact, your eyes are

  912. supposed to be plucked out and both your

  913. arms supposed to be cut off. Matter of

  914. fact, you're supposed to be dead,

  915. >> right?

  916. >> What Romans 6 say?

  917. >> Shall we continue in sin that grace may

  918. abound?

  919. >> God forbid. How shall we that are what?

  920. Dead to sin live any longer therein. You

  921. say Jesus is emphasizing a physical

  922. fact, preacher. Well, he is. This is how

  923. serious he is about sin. But the truth

  924. is, just because that he is this serious

  925. about it, he doesn't want us to go to

  926. cutting our limbs off and plucking our

  927. eyes out.

  928. >> You're right.

  929. >> The acquisition of the text. There's

  930. also the apprehension that taking hold

  931. in verse 30. If thy right hand offend

  932. thee, the strong hand, the dominant

  933. hand, but it's still the sinful hand.

  934. Why? Because it offends. It is it's

  935. scandalous to you. Cut it off. Matthew

  936. Henry said this. He said, "If it were

  937. indeed impossible to govern the eye and

  938. the hand, as they have been so

  939. accustomed to wicked practices for so

  940. long that they will not be restrained

  941. from them, if there be no other way to

  942. restrain them." In par parenthesis he

  943. says which blessed be God through his

  944. grace there is. It were better for us to

  945. pluck out the eye and cut off the hand

  946. than to save them and indulge them in

  947. sin to the ruin of the soul.

  948. You say, "What does that mean,

  949. preacher?" Well, let me illustrate it to

  950. you this way. There's been many a man

  951. that's been close to the cross. There's

  952. been many a woman that's been close to

  953. the cross. And you know what? standing

  954. at Calvary where salvation is reaching

  955. out for them and they're reaching out

  956. for salvation. You know what many of

  957. them have left from because they saw

  958. something. You're right

  959. >> in their mind they were going to have to

  960. leave behind.

  961. And so you know what they did instead of

  962. reaching out to Jesus and allowing Jesus

  963. to reach them, you know what they did?

  964. They decided to let their heart follow

  965. their eye.

  966. >> Right?

  967. >> And you know what they did? They walked

  968. away from Calvary and walked down the

  969. road to hell.

  970. >> Amen.

  971. >> You say, "How is that, preacher?" Well,

  972. the truth is that every person that dies

  973. and goes to hell, regardless of whether

  974. they strut there or whether they stumble

  975. off in there, the truth is it's the lust

  976. of the flesh that sends them there.

  977. You're

  978. >> right.

  979. >> You say, "How does that apply in other

  980. areas?" Well, just think about this.

  981. There's been many a man that's an

  982. alcoholic when they're sober. Man, you I

  983. mean, we can all think about men like

  984. this. When they're sober, they're good

  985. as gold. Man, couldn't meet a nicer

  986. person.

  987. But when they get drunk, you know what?

  988. They're just controlled by it.

  989. >> You're right.

  990. >> And those being so close to

  991. righteousness, allowing their taste buds

  992. to control them, they just never could

  993. put it down.

  994. And so, you know what Jesus is saying?

  995. It's better you pluck your eye out if

  996. that sight, what you can see is going to

  997. take you away.

  998. >> You're right.

  999. >> It's better you cut your hand off.

1000. Because here's the thing about it. More

1001. important than physical health is

  1002. spiritual health.

  1003. >> Amen.

1004. >> God is more concerned about you being

1005. pure than he is about you being

  1006. physically healthy.

  1007. >> You're right.

1008. >> Fanny Crosby talks about her blindness.

1009. She said she felt like she never could

1010. have served the Lord the way that she

1011. should if she hadn't been blind. You're

  1012. >> right.

1013. >> I've known ladies and miss Margaret

1014. Strainer come in here. I was looking at

1015. her book back there in office my office

1016. just a little while ago. She was talking

  1017. about how that um I I believe she'd

  1018. never been married. I think I don't

1019. think she'd ever been married. She when

1020. she was young, she just said, "I just

1021. felt like God called me to the mission

1022. field. Never never thought about being

1023. married." And you know what she did? She

1024. left and went and served in Papa U

1025. Indonesia, I believe it is. Yeah, I

1026. think it is. For 40 years by herself,

  1027. winning people to God.

1028. what the world would have looked at her

  1029. and said, "You're a fool."

1030. What I'm saying is is the truth is when

1031. something's going to hinder us, God

1032. says, "I we we need to get it out of the

  1033. way,

  1034. >> right?

1035. >> Even if it is your best hand or your

1036. best eye." You say, "Well, how does that

1037. apply to me?" Well, let me just say

1038. this. What is it that's effective in

  1039. your life?

1040. What is it that you're productive with?

1041. What is it that you use the most? But

1042. even in that, it's sinful.

  1043. Jesus says it's better

1044. that you pluck it out and cast it from

1045. thee. Because notice what he says. It's

  1046. profitable for thee

1047. that one of thy members should perish.

1048. It's profitable for thee that you should

1049. lose your eyesight and go to heaven than

1050. have your eyesight and go to hell.

1051. >> Amen. And for those of us who are saved

1052. tonight, it's more profitable for you

1053. that you be maimed and enter into heaven

1054. with rewards than it be that you live

1055. this life blessed physically but enter

1056. into heaven with nothing to offer the

  1057. king.

  1058. >> Right?

1059. >> You know Paul said this, remember he had

1060. that thorn. You remember him talking

1061. about that? He said, "I besought the

1062. Lord thrice." You remember him saying

1063. that? He said, "I besought the Lord

1064. thrice. He'd remove this thorn from me."

1065. Said, "But God God told him, no, not

1066. going to remove that, Paul." He said,

1067. "My grace is sufficient for thee."

  1068. That's right.

1069. >> What did he say? My strength is made

1070. perfect in what? In weakness.

1071. What did Paul say after that? He said,

1072. "Therefore, will I must glory in my

1073. infirmities that the power of Christ may

  1074. rest upon me."

1075. >> The truth in our life is is God wants to

  1076. take our handicap.

  1077. >> You're right.

1078. >> And use it for his glory. Now, some of

1079. you, the truth of this text reveals

1080. right here that some people's going to

1081. have to make themselves handicapped.

1082. Well, you say, "Preacher, that's that

1083. doesn't sound too good." Well, let me

  1084. illustrate it this way.

1085. If you got a problem looking at stuff,

1086. you ought not to on the phone.

1087. >> Maybe you ought to throw the phone out

  1088. the window.

  1089. >> That's right.

  1090. >> You say, "Preacher, but I can't live

1091. without it." Well, you just might have

  1092. to.

  1093. >> That's right. You can't live it. Live

1094. with it. You probably live better

1095. without it than you could with it.

  1096. >> You're right.

1097. >> Wouldn't you rather have your marriage?

1098. >> Wouldn't you rather have your family?

  1099. >> You say, "Well, I can't communicate with

1100. them." Oh, you Lord will work all that

  1101. out.

  1102. >> Right.

1103. >> If you can't handle it, you don't need

  1104. it.

  1105. >> You're right.

  1106. >> Amen.

1107. >> Say, "But everybody else has got one."

1108. If you care enough about your your

1109. salvation and your savior, you know

1110. what? It won't matter to you what it

  1111. cost.

  1112. >> You're right.

  1113. >> Jesus said, "If it's a hand,

  1114. I don't know about you, that'd be

  1115. painful."

1116. >> But he was serious.

1117. He said, "Preacher, you're not asking me

1118. to cut off my hand. No, I'm asking you

1119. to do whatever it takes."

  1120. >> That's the only way we'll have revival.

1121. When people get decided that I will do

1122. whatever it takes, Jesus, whatever you

1123. need out of me is what I will give.

1124. How muchever it hurts. People talk about

1125. this and I and I'm going to get off on

1126. this tonight, but people talk about

  1127. tithe and preach, I just don't I don't

  1128. know that I can give 10%. That's that's

1129. preach that's Old Testament. That tithe

1130. is Old Testament. Well, I'll say this.

1131. The tithe carries over in the New

1132. Testament very very clearly. But I'll

1133. say this. There's a principle in the New

1134. Testament where one of them said, "Give

  1135. till it hurts.

1136. >> Give until you've given until you can

  1137. give no more.

  1138. >> I'll take the tithe, won't you?"

  1139. >> Amen.

1140. >> You say, "Does that mean Does that mean

1141. I'm gonna have to give everything?"

  1142. Well, I'll tell you this. There's a man

1143. in history named RG Lerno.

1144. He operated off the reverse tithe

1145. principle. You can read his book mover I

1146. believe is the mover of man and

1147. mountains I think is the name of his

1148. book but he operated off of verse

1149. reverse tithe principle and Lernno's

1150. built some of the biggest equipment in

1151. history hu I mean huge mining machinery

1152. I mean was pioneer in all type of dirt

1153. work and all of that and he operated off

1154. of 90% he operated off 10% and tithe 90%

  1155. built his business

  1156. operating that

1157. You say, "Preacher, it ain't possible."

1158. Well, you can talk to him. You get to

  1159. heaven, he'll tell you.

1160. I'm saying God, whatever he tells you to

1161. do, what what's the old say? How's the

1162. old saying go? Where God guides, he

  1163. what? Provides.

1164. He provides. And uh I'll say this, if

1165. they sin in your life, whatever you have

1166. to do, get rid of it.

  1167. >> Amen.

  1168. >> Amen. That's for myself. That's for all

1169. of us. I want revival.

1170. >> I want it bad. And uh this what I've

1171. come to decide if I'm going to have it,

1172. I'm going to have to have it myself,

  1173. >> right?

1174. >> Have to get it myself. But I'll tell you

1175. this, as your pastor, I want you to have

  1176. it.

  1177. >> Amen.

1178. >> I want all of us to have it.

1179. >> It's going to cost us. Amen. Father,

1180. thank you for this day. Thank you for

1181. this time. And uh Lord, I pray you would

1182. give us boldness and wisdom,

1183. Lord, to uh complete the will of God.

1184. Lord, I know that it's not always

1185. pleasant. Lord, I know that much much of

1186. the maintenance of the Christian life is

1187. burdensome, Lord, and it's painful. But

1188. God, I know, Lord, that it afterwards,

1189. you told us in your word, it yields the

1190. peaceable fruit of righteousness. And

1191. Lord, I I thank you for that. God, I

1192. pray you'd help us to bear that. And

1193. Lord, for this fasting commitment, Lord,

1194. that uh we've made to you here, Lord,

1195. and some of this church has made. I pray

1196. that they would keep up with that, Lord,

1197. to fast today, Lord, before this

1198. meeting. And God, I just pray you'd get

1199. glory into yourself out of it. And um

1200. Lord, I know you can do it. God, I know

1201. you have your way in it. Lord, we should

1202. be sure to give you thanks for it

1203. because we ask it in Jesus name. Amen.
