  1. Welcome to the podcast of Meadows

  2. Baptist Church of Walnut Cove, North

  3. Carolina. We're so glad you joined us

  4. today. If you enjoy today's message, be

  5. sure to subscribe, follow, and share

  6. with your friends. Now, let's join

  7. Pastor Charlie Branch with a word from

  8. God.

  9. And I appreciate the reality of that

  10. tonight. And it's good to be in the

  11. house of the Lord this evening. Amen.

  12. Appreciate you being here on a Thursday

  13. night. I don't remember what day of the

  14. week it was. And it's good to be in

  15. church tonight. Thank you, preacher, for

  16. the invitation to come. I got to be

  17. here. I guess it was sometime last year

  18. when brother Jarvis is here and meeting.

  19. And it's good to be back here with you

  20. at Meadows. And we appreciate your

  21. pastor and his friendship. I just like

  22. to hear him talk. I really do. And uh

  23. and I appreciate that. And uh I tell

  24. you, he is the countryest boy I've ever

  25. heard from Delaware in my life. Amen.

  26. And uh but I appreciate him. Appreciate

  27. his family. And it's just a joy to be

  28. here. Then I appreciate Brother Austin.

  29. And uh we are Are we friends?

  30. >> Yeah, we're brothers. Uh I don't know if

  31. we're friends, but uh no, I I don't have

  32. a closer friend in the world than

  33. Brother Austin Elkins. He's one of my

  34. good buddies. We um we've come up

  35. preaching together thanks to brother

  36. Davey Shelton. He kind of made us be

  37. friends and I'm glad that he did. And

  38. I'll tell you there ain't nothing I

  39. wouldn't do for brother Austin and there

  40. ain't nothing he wouldn't do for me. So

  41. we just go around doing nothing for each

  42. other.

  43. And uh but uh I know you've had good

  44. preaching the last few nights.

  45. >> But all good things must come to an end.

  46. So take your the word of God with me

  47. tonight and find the Gospel of Luke

  48. chapter number two. The Gospel of Luke

  49. chapter number two. Preacher, once

  50. again, thank you for letting me come.

  51. I'm looking forward to these nights

  52. together. I've been in meeting in

  53. Monroe, North Carolina the last three

  54. nights. And if I'm not and then we got

  55. revival meeting starting Monday night at

  56. our church, brother Jimbo seat. So, if

  57. I'm not right with God by next Thursday

  58. night, I'm just going to quit, okay?

  59. Because being in church five night,

  60. eight nights straight plus Sunday. If

  61. that don't do it, ain't nothing going to

  62. do it. But, uh, we try to give you the

  63. burden of our heart tonight and be a be

  64. a blessing to you. And it's good to see

  65. brother Dakota and his wife here tonight

  66. as well. They came through our church

  67. when they was in missions and it's good

  68. to see him tonight as well. And we're

  69. thankful for the Lord's kindness and his

  70. mercy in our lives. Amen. The Gospel of

  71. Luke, chapter number two tonight. And

  72. I'm going to begin our reading in verse

  73. number 21. And I'm going to read several

  74. verses. So, if you'll bear with me, I'll

  75. read down through verse number 38

  76. tonight for our text. But do not worry,

  77. I am a 30-minute preacher. We will

  78. synchronize our watches together because

  79. uh I have been taught, brother Jimbo

  80. taught us it pays by the job, not by the

  81. hour. Amen. But I know you've worked

  82. hard all day. You've been in church all

  83. night or all week, not all night, all

  84. week. And uh yeah, I get picked on more

  85. for my time limit than I do anything. So

  86. I said, don't put a time limit on the

  87. Holy Spirit. I'm like, I don't I put a

  88. time limit on preachers that can't tell

  89. time. Okay? And uh so let's stand

  90. together for for the reading of his word

  91. tonight. Luke chapter 2 verse number 21.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  92. And when eight days were accomplished

  93. for the circumcising of the child, his

  94. name was called Jesus. I know who that

  95. is. Amen.

  96. >> Amen.

  97. >> Which was so named of the angel before

  98. he was conceived in the womb. And when

  99. the days of her purification according

  100. to the law of Moses were accomplished,

  101. they brought him to Jerusalem to present

  102. him to the Lord. As it is written in the

  103. law of the Lord, every male that openeth

  104. the womb shall be called holy to the

  105. Lord, and offer a sacrifice according to

  106. that which is said in the law of the

  107. Lord, a pair of turtle doves or two

  108. young pigeons. And behold, there was a

  109. man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon.

  110. The same man was just and devout,

  111. waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  112. And the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it

  113. was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost

  114. that he should not see death before he

  115. had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came

  116. by the spirit of the Lord into the

  117. temple. And when his parents brought in

  118. the child Jesus to do for him after the

  119. custom of the law, then took he up he

  120. then took he him up in his arms, and

  121. said, Blessed be God, and said, Lord,

  122. now let us thy servant depart in peace

  123. according to thy word. FOR MINE EYES

  124. HAVE SEEN THY SALVATION, which thou has

  125. prepared before all the face of the

  126. people, a light to lighten the Gentiles,

  127. and the glory of thy people Israel. And

  128. Joseph and his mother marveled at those

  129. things which were spoken of him. And

  130. Simeon blessed them and said unto Mary

  131. his mother, "Behold, this child is set

  132. for the fall and rising again of many in

  133. Israel. For a sign which shall be spoken

  134. against, yeah, a sword shall pierce

  135. through thine own soul, that the

  136. thoughts of many hearts may be

  137. revealed." And there was one Anna, a

  138. prophetist, the daughter of Thaniel, the

  139. tribe of Asher, and she was a great age,

  140. and had lived with an husband seven

  141. years from her virginity. And she was a

  142. widow of four four score and four years.

  143. And she departed not from the temple,

  144. but served God with fasting and prayers

  145. night and day. And she coming in that

  146. instant gave thanks likewise unto the

  147. Lord and spake of him to all of them

  148. that look for redemption in Jerusalem.

  149. Heavenly Father, I thank you one more

  150. time tonight for the opportunity we have

  151. to stand and preach the word of God.

  152. Thank you Lord for this pastor in this

  153. church and their desire to have a

  154. meeting in these days. Thank you, Lord,

  155. for what you've already done this week.

  156. The good reports we've heard. We give

  157. you glory for that. We do not want to

  158. just assume that you're going to help us

  159. tonight. But we ask you that you'd be so

  160. kind to cleanse me of sin, Lord, to

  161. empty me of self, fill us with the

  162. spirit of God tonight. May we see no man

  163. save Jesus only. And what you do, we'll

  164. thank you and give you glory for it. For

  165. we ask these things in Jesus' name.

  166. Amen. Thank you for standing. You can be

  167. seated tonight. When we come to Luke

  168. chapter number two, there are a few

  169. things that we see in the text. By way

  170. of introduction, I note in verse number

  171. 21, there is a what I call a

  172. certification. We note in this text that

  173. Mary and Joseph, they they have brought

  174. Jesus to the temple to fulfill uh the

  175. custom of the law. There's a

  176. certification. There is a custom in

  177. verse 22, verse 23, and verse 24. They

  178. are offering according to the law of

  179. Moses what Moses declared that when a

  180. male child was born, they were to bring

  181. that baby UH TO THE TEMPLE on the eighth

  182. day to offer the sacrifices in the law

  183. of Moses. SOMEBODY SAID, "PREACHER, WHY

  184. ARE THESE VERSES IMPORTANT?" WELL,

  185. they're important to remind us that

  186. Jesus did not come to destroy the law,

  187. but he came to fulfill the law. AND

  188. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HE DID. HE HE FILLED

  189. THE LAW TO THE FULL. WHAT MAN COULD NOT

  190. DO. I'M GLAD Jesus did. AND I'M GLAD

  191. TONIGHT I'M NOT SAVED BY MY

  192. RIGHTEOUSNESS. I'M NOT SAVED BASED ON

  193. WHO I AM OR WHAT I'VE DONE. BUT THANK

  194. GOD I'M SAVED BECAUSE HERE'S WHAT PAUL

  195. SAID. HE HATH MADE HIM TO BE SIN FOR US

  196. WHO KNEW NO SIN THAT WE MIGHT BE MADE

  197. THE RIGHTEOUS OF GOD IN HIM. I TELL YOU,

  198. IF YOU GET TO HEAVEN TONIGHT, it won't

  199. be because of your good works. IT WON'T

  200. BE BECAUSE OF YOUR WATER BAPTISM. AND IT

  201. WON'T BE BECAUSE OF YOUR CHURCH

  202. MEMBERSHIP. BUT OLD SYDNEY COBALT SAID

  203. IF SOMEONE ASKKED ME HOW I MADE IT

  204. QUICKLY I'LL SAY IT BY THE BLOOD OF THE

  205. LAMB I made it through. And so there is

  206. a custom and there is certification. But

  207. I'm interested in these verses. We note

  208. the church in these verses. Now we

  209. understand I'm using the term church in

  210. a subjective manner. We understand that

  211. and that the New Testament assembly of a

  212. church was not yet a meeting yet. We

  213. understand that Jesus has not said I

  214. will build my church in the gates of

  215. hell. We understand all that. We

  216. understand the church is still a mystery

  217. that has not been revealed uh to the

  218. APOSTLE PAUL YET. WE GET THAT. But

  219. here's what I want us to think about.

  220. The temple uh to those Jews was a place

  221. where they would come together and

  222. worship the Lord. IT WAS A PLACE THEY

  223. WOULD COME and assemble together and

  224. they would read the scriptures and

  225. reason. You'll recall later in our

  226. Lord's ministry in Luke chapter 4 that

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  227. he would go in that synagogue and he

  228. would read from the Torah. He would read

  229. from THE OLD TESTAMENT. YOU KNOW WHAT

  230. CHURCH OUGHT TO BE? IT'S A PLACE WHERE

  231. WE OUGHT TO SACRIFICE. It's a place

  232. where we ought to have the scriptures

  233. preached. IT'S A PLACE OF WORSHIP. THEY

  234. WOULD SING PSALMS. PSALMS UH IN THAT

  235. TEMPLE. IT REMINDS ME OF WHAT WE DO IN

  236. THE CHURCH. Can I get amen out of that?

  237. >> And so, here's what I'm saying by a

  238. practical application of this. This is

  239. the first time in our Bible where Jesus

  240. physically enters the temple in his

  241. human body. Would you agree with that? I

  242. understand the glory of God falls in the

  243. in the tabernacle and in the temple in

  244. the Old Testament. I UNDERSTAND THAT.

  245. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IN OUR MIND'S EYE.

  246. THE FIRST TIME JESUS EVER ENTERED the

  247. temple, he's 8 days old

  248. >> and he enters that temple. I want to

  249. preach very simply for just a few

  250. moments on Jesus goes to church. When

  251. Jesus goes to church, I don't know about

  252. you tonight, I want to go to church

  253. where Jesus goes to church.

  254. >> I WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN A CHURCH WHERE

  255. JESUS IS WELCOMED.

  256. I know that all sinners ought to be

  257. welcome and we ought to welcome sinners

  258. because they need the gospel. BUT I TELL

  259. YOU, OUGHT TO INVITE PEOPLE TO CHURCH.

  260. BUT IF WE GO TO CHURCH AND HE'S NOT

  261. THERE, all is vain. UNLESS THE SPIRIT OF

  262. THE HOLY ONE COMES DOWN. WE NEED JESUS

  263. MORE THAN WE NEED anything else in our

  264. services. We need his touch. WE NEED HIS

  265. POWER. WE NEED HIM WORK IN OUR LIVES.

  266. AND WE NEED WHAT THIS TEMPLE HAVE. WE

  267. NEED JESUS TO SHOW UP IN OUR SERVICES.

  268. All about you. I'm tired of dead

  269. religion. I'M TIRED OF DEAD CHURCH. I

  270. WANT GOD'S TOUCH. I WANT GOD'S PRESENCE.

  271. I WANT GOD'S BLESSINGS AND HIS POWER UH

  272. TO BE MANIFESTED in the church.

  273. >> Well, it's interesting. Jesus goes to

  274. church and there are some people, if you

  275. will, there are some people in this

  276. temple. And there are three things I

  277. want to emphasize about the about these

  278. folks when Jesus went to church. And I

  279. believe we can take these principles and

  280. these lessons tonight, and I believe

  281. it'll help us when we go to church.

  282. FIRST OF ALL, WHEN JESUS WENT TO CHURCH,

  283. there was someone expecting him.

  284. >> I'm going to back that up and SAY IT

  285. AGAIN. WHEN JESUS WENT TO CHURCH, THERE

  286. WAS SOMEONE THERE THAT WAS EXPECTING

  287. HIM. We read in verses 25, 26, and 27,

  288. we was introduced TO A MAN BY THE NAME

  289. OF SIMEON. YOU KNOW WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS,

  290. PREACHER, ABOUT SIMEON? HE WAS waiting

  291. for him.

  292. >> He was wait Praise God. I feel good

  293. about it now. HE WAS WAITING FOR THE

  294. CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL. WAS YOU EXPECTING

  295. JESUS TO SHOW UP WHEN YOU GOT THE CHURCH

  296. TONIGHT? WELL, DON'T EXPECT HIM TO SHOW

  297. UP. AND DON'T EXPECT HIM TO SHOW UP IF

  298. YOU'RE NOT LOOKING FOR HIM. SIMEON HAD

  299. BEEN SERVING GOD for many years. AND THE

  300. HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD HAS SPOKE TO HIM AND

  301. SAID HE WOULD NOT DIE TILL HE SAW THE

  302. CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL. SIMEON DIDN'T

  303. KNOW WHAT DAY HE WAS GOING TO SHOW UP,

  304. PASTOR. BUT HE KEPT ON GOING. HE KEPT ON

  305. BEING FAITHFUL. SOMEBODY SAY, "WELL,

  306. PREACHER, OUR SERVICES ARE DEAD." AND IT

  307. WASN'T A SHOUTED OUT SERVICE. WELL, YOU

  308. KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO? IF HE DON'T

  309. SHOW UP SUNDAY MORNING, I'M GOING TO GO

  310. BACK SUNDAY NIGHT. AND IF HE DON'T SHOW

  311. UP SUNDAY NIGHT, I'M GOING TO GO BACK

  312. WEDNESDAY NIGHT. YOU KNOW WHY? I WANT TO

  313. EXPECT JESUS TO SHOW UP IN MY CHURCH.

  314. >> There's that old story that small church

  315. that had planned a special prayer

  316. meeting because they had been in a time

  317. of drought. And they got together to

  318. pray and this one little boy showed up

  319. at the prayer meeting and he had an

  320. umbrella and they all began to laugh at

  321. him, make fun of him. They said, "WHY'D

  322. YOU BRING AN UMBRELLA?" HE SAID, "CUZ

  323. I'm expecting rain." I'm going to tell

  324. there's A LOT OF PEOPLE. THEY SAY,

  325. "WE'RE GOING TO GO TO CHURCH AND

  326. WORSHIP, BUT THEY DON'T BRING AN

  327. UMBRELLA. THEY'RE not expecting JESUS TO

  328. SHOW UP." OH, BUT THANK GOD FOR SIMEON

  329. HERE. HE HAD BEEN THROUGH 400 YEARS.

  330. THERE'S BEEN 400 YEARS OF SPIRITUAL

  331. DARKNESS AND NO WORD FROM GOD. BUT THAT

  332. HADN'T KNOCKED SIMEON OUT OF CHURCH.

  333. HE'S STILL STAYING FAITHFUL. HE'S STILL

  334. SERVING GOD. HE'S JUST WAITING FOR THE

  335. DAY UH THAT THE SON OF GOD WALKS THROUGH

  336. THOSE DOORS. HEY, I WANT TO ENCOURAGE A

  337. CHILD OF GOD. YOU STAY FAITHFUL IN THE

  338. CHURCH. YOU STAY EXPECTING CUZ IT MIGHT

  339. BE ONE DAY THE DOORS OPEN AND THE SON OF

  340. GOD WILL MANIFEST HIS PRESENCE AND WILL

  341. MANIFEST HIS TOUCH IN OUR midst this

  342. evening.

  343. >> I see. H how did how did how was Simeon

  344. expected him? Well, his expectation was

  345. based on the scriptures.

  346. >> Watch what he said in verse 25. He's

  347. waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  348. How did Simeon know that Christ was

  349. coming? I'm This will be real deep. You

  350. have to back up. You really got to

  351. think, put your thinking cap on here.

  352. I've been to Bible college. You really

  353. got to think with me right here. You

  354. know how Simeon knew that Jesus is GOING

  355. TO SHOW UP?

  356. >> COME ON.

  357. >> He'd been reading the book,

  358. >> right?

  359. HE'D BEEN LISTENING TO WHAT THEM OLD

  360. TESTAMENT PROPHETS SAID.

  361. >> HE HAD READ ISAIAH'S SCROLL.

  362. >> HE KNEW UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN AND

  363. UNLESS A SON IS GIVEN. HE KNEW THAT HE

  364. HATH BELIEVED OUR REPORT. HE KNEW ONE

  365. DAY JUST SOMEBODY SAID, "PREACHER, HOW

  366. DO YOU KNOW THAT JESUS WANTS TO SHOW UP

  367. IN OUR CHURCH?" HERE'S WHAT HE SAID. HE

  368. HE REMINDS US NOT TO FORSAKE THE ASSEMB

  369. OF OURSELVES TOGETHER. HERE'S WHAT HE

  370. SAID IN PSALM 22. HE INHABITS THE

  371. PRAISES OF ISRAEL. AND I'M TELLING YOU

  372. TONIGHT, I'M EXPECTING JESUS TO SHOW UP

  373. AT CHURCH CUZ I'VE BEEN IN THE BOOK.

  374. >> THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE, they want to

  375. have a they want to have a Sunday only

  376. religion. They don't pick up their Bible

  377. all week. They don't pray. They don't

  378. study. They don't ask GOD TO MOVE. BUT

  379. PREACHER, THEY EXPECT THEM TO SHOW UP ON

  380. SUNDAY, BUT THEY AIN'T been in the BOOK

  381. ALL WEEK.

  382. >> DON'T EXPECT HIM TO SHOW UP IF YOU AIN'T

  383. BEEN IN THE BOOK. SIMEON'S EXPECTATION

  384. WAS BASED ON THE FACT THAT HE KNEW THE

  385. SCRIPTURES.

  386. >> If you ain't spend time in the book,

  387. don't expect them to show up.

  388. >> Amen. That's right.

  389. Bible said, "Blessed are they which

  390. hunger and thirst after righteousness,

  391. for they shall be filled."

  392. >> His expectation was based on the

  393. scriptures. His expectation was based on

  394. the spirit. Notice what your text says

  395. in verse 26. I'm just a Bible preacher.

  396. And it was revealed to him by the Holy

  397. Ghost that he should not see death

  398. before he'd seen the Lord's Christ.

  399. Watch verse 27, PLEASE. AND HE CAME BY

  400. THE SPIRIT INTO THE TEMPLE.

  401. >> Let's get theological for a second. This

  402. is still Old Testament economy because

  403. you don't have a New Testament without

  404. the death of the testator. So, we're

  405. still in the Old Testament economy here

  406. in Luke chapter number two. And so, we

  407. understand that the Holy Ghost did not

  408. indwell the believer until after the day

  409. of Pentecost. SO SIMEON DOES NOT HAVE

  410. THE INDDWELLING SPIRIT. Ain't that

  411. right? The spirit would come ON A MAN

  412. AND COME OFF a man in the Old Testament.

  413. But here's Simeon that don't HAVE THE

  414. HOLY SPIRIT IN HIM. HE'S JUST GOT THE

  415. HOLY SPIRIT ON HIM.

  416. >> And and he got TO THE TEMPLE.

  417. >> BUT WE GOT PEOPLE THAT SAY THEY'RE

  418. SAVED.

  419. >> THEY SAY THE SPIRIT OF GOD LIVES IN

  420. THEM,

  421. >> BUT HE DON'T GET THEM TO CHURCH ON

  422. SUNDAY.

  423. >> I WISH I HAD SOMEBODY. I MEAN, WE GOT

  424. PEOPLE THEY SAY THEY'RE SAVED AND THEY

  425. AND I AIN'T FUSSING AT Y'ALL. YOU'RE

  426. HERE on a Thursday night, but I'm We

  427. talking about all them other people that

  428. just show up on Sunday morning. Y'all

  429. don't want somebody said, "You talking

  430. about people?" You better believe I'm

  431. talking about that crowd. Amen.

  432. >> I'm 34 years old, BEEN IN CHURCH ALL MY

  433. LIFE. I have no I'm a preacher's kid,

  434. been pastoring 13 years. I have no shame

  435. left.

  436. >> I love it.

  437. >> WELL, I LOVE JESUS AND EVERYTHING, but

  438. we ain't going to be back Sunday night.

  439. >> YOU MEAN THE SPIRIT OF GOD INDWELLS YOU?

  440. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE HOLY GHOST OF GOD.

  441. YOU SAY LIVES IN YOUR HEART AND HE CAN'T

  442. GET YOU BACK ON SUNDAY NIGHT. HE CAN'T

  443. GET YOU TO PRAYER MEETING ON WEDNESDAY

  444. NIGHT. HE CAN'T GET YOU TO REVIVAL

  445. MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT. I KNOW IT'S

  446. WALMART NIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT. I KNOW

  447. IT'S BASKETBALL NIGHT. BUT YOU SAY THE

  448. HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU AND HE DON'T

  449. GET YOU TO CHURCH. I AIN'T BUYING IF

  450. YOU'RE SELLING, FRIEND.

  451. >> HEY, this is preaching better than I

  452. thought it would.

  453. >> HE WAS EXPECTING HIM CUZ THE SCRIPTURES

  454. TOLD him to look for him. He is

  455. expecting him because the spirit led him

  456. there.

  457. >> I uh I've been pastoring 13 years, but I

  458. was faithful to church before I started

  459. pastoring.

  460. >> I mean, at 6:30 on Sunday mornings, my

  461. eyes open. MY TRUCK STARTS, MY SUIT

  462. FLOATS TO ME. MY TRUCK IMMEDIATELY

  463. ALREADY GOES IN DRIVE. YOU KNOW WHERE

  464. IT'S HEADED ON SUNDAY MORNING?

  465. BOJANGLES.

  466. >> And then I GO TO CHURCH. SOMEBODY HELP

  467. ME. AMEN.

  468. I mean, you got to have a little bit of

  469. help on Sunday morning. Amen. I go, you

  470. know what I do, pastor? I go by Bo James

  471. on Sunday morning, get me a country

  472. fried ham biscuit, AND THANK GOD I'm not

  473. under the law. I'm under grace. Amen.

  474. Praise. AND I EAT THAT HAM BISCUIT, AND

  475. I GO TO THE HOUSE OF GOD. BUT YOU KNOW

  476. WHAT? MY TRUCK WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO

  477. IF IT WASN'T IN MY CHURCH PARKING LOT on

  478. Sunday. YOU KNOW WHY? CUZ THAT'S WHERE

  479. I'M SUPPOSED TO BE. HEY, DAVID SAID,

  480. "I'D RATHER BE A DOORKEEPER IN THE HOUSE

  481. OF MY GOD THAN TO DWELL IN THE TENTS OF

  482. THE WICKED." EVERYTHING GOOD HAS EVER

  483. HAPPENED IN MY LIFE. IT HAPPENED IN THE

  484. HOUSE OF GOD. I GOT SAVED IN CHURCH. I

  485. GOT CALLED TO PREACH IN CHURCH. I MET MY

  486. WIFE AT CHURCH. I PROPOSED TO HER AT

  487. CHURCH. SHE AIN'T BEEN BACK SINCE. I GOT

  488. MARRIED AT CHURCH. AMEN. I JUST THANK

  489. GOD FOR CHURCH.

  490. >> YES.

  491. >> His expectation was based on the spirit.

  492. His expectation was based on the

  493. scriptures. His expectation was based on

  494. the saints. Right.

  495. >> He's not the only one there looking for

  496. Jesus. You're

  497. >> right.

  498. >> Cuz Anna's there.

  499. >> Right.

  500. >> You know, one of the reasons I like to

  501. go to church cuz I got my brothers and

  502. sisters there.

  503. >> And the Hebrew writer said, I quoted a

  504. minute ago, we're not to forsake the

  505. assembling of ourselves together. Now,

  506. watch how somebody said, "Well, you

  507. shouldn't talk about them people don't

  508. go to church." Well, somebody forgot to

  509. tell Paul because Paul said, "As the

  510. manner of some is."

  511. >> He's talking about them people laid out

  512. church, TOO.

  513. >> BUT EXHORTING one another. WHAT IS THAT?

  514. SO MUCH THE MORE. YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS

  515. WHEN WE GO TO CHURCH? IT ENCOURAGES ME

  516. TO SEE, THANK GOD, THAT FAMILY'S NOT

  517. QUIT. THEY'RE STILL SERVING GOD. WE'RE

  518. STILL IN THIS THING TOGETHER. AND I'LL

  519. TELL YOU, SIMEON, HE MIGHT HAVE GOT

  520. TIRED ONE DAY AND DIDN'T FEEL LIKE

  521. GOING, BUT HE KNEW SISTER ANNA'S GOING

  522. TO BE THERE. AND SO, I DON'T WANT TO

  523. DISCOURAGE HER, SO I'M GOING TO GO. AND

  524. SISTER ANNA MIGHT HAVE GOT UP ONE

  525. MORNING AND SAY, "YOU KNOW WHAT? I

  526. REALLY DON'T FEEL LIKE GOING, BUT SHE

  527. KNEW, BUT SIMEON'S GOING TO BE THERE."

  528. AND SO, BECAUSE THEY WANT TO ENCOURAGE

  529. ONE ANOTHER. HIS EXPECTATION WAS BASED

  530. ON THE SCRIPTURES, BASED ON THE SAINTS,

  531. AND BASED on the spirit of God.

  532. >> Y'all picking up what I'm throwing down

  533. tonight?

  534. >> When Jesus went to church, somebody was

  535. expecting him. Number two, when Jesus

  536. went to church, someone was embracing

  537. him.

  538. >> Look at verse 28, SPEAKING OF SIMEON.

  539. THEN TOOK HE UP IN his arms.

  540. >> Woo.

  541. SIMEON WAS JUST NOT JUST SATISFIED WITH

  542. JUST SHOWING UP AND KEEPING JESUS at arm

  543. distance.

  544. >> BUT WHEN JESUS SHOWED UP, I NOTICED THEY

  545. CAME. Verse 28 and verse 29. THEY DIDN'T

  546. COME TO CHURCH JUST TO SIT THERE, BUT

  547. THEY CAME WITH A DESIRE TO SEE JESUS.

  548. >> You know, they could have made reasons

  549. to not go.

  550. >> You're right.

  551. >> Their age didn't stop them. They're both

  552. old.

  553. >> Yeah.

  554. >> But they didn't allow their age to stop

  555. them. They didn't allow their

  556. afflictions to stop them.

  557. >> They didn't allow their attitudes to

  558. stop them.

  559. >> They didn't allow the atmosphere of the

  560. day. Remember, no word from God for 400

  561. years. They just kept on going.

  562. >> They came. They got closer.

  563. >> Verse 28 and verse 38, when they both

  564. saw Jesus, both Anna and Simeon.

  565. They ran right where he is at.

  566. >> You know, you got that crowd. You got

  567. that crowd. They they want to go to

  568. church because it's the right thing to

  569. do socially in the south.

  570. >> But then you got that other crowd.

  571. They're not satisfied with just sitting

  572. on a church pew.

  573. >> They want to get closer to Jesus.

  574. When when Jesus showed up at church,

  575. there was somebody expecting him and

  576. there was somebody embracing him. Simeon

  577. took him up in his arms. The American

  578. church mostly has a mentality they just

  579. want to attend church enough to make

  580. themselves feel better. Y

  581. >> we're living in a day and and I know

  582. it's the first time I preached here and

  583. I've only got one more night left and I

  584. don't want to make y'all mad at me, but

  585. we're living in a day and age where

  586. people have a kid rock church mentality

  587. >> brother

  588. >> or a jelly roll mentality

  589. >> where you know you can still drink and

  590. cuss and dope and run around and be

  591. immoral but still claim the name of

  592. Jesus. I'M NOT BUYING THAT, FRIEND.

  593. I don't see how I CAN'T GET AWAY WITH

  594. THINKING A bad thought without the Holy

  595. Spirit convicting me. But they CAN TAKE

  596. GOD'S NAME IN VAIN AND DRINK ALCOHOL AND

  597. PROMOTE THAT WICKEDNESS AND EVERYBODY

  598. THINKS THEY'RE SAVED AND RIGHT WITH GOD

  599. AND FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST.

  600. >> Come on.

  601. >> Amen.

  602. >> We got an American church today that,

  603. you know, when Aussie Osborne died, he's

  604. in heaven now, but he cursed God his

  605. whole life.

  606. >> Come on now. Help me.

  607. AND

  608. >> I'M TELLING YOU, WE DON'T NEED THAT KIND

  609. OF RELIGION. WE NEED PEOPLE SAYING, "I'M

  610. NOT GOING TO STAND ON THE BACK BURNER. I

  611. JUST DON'T WANT TO HAVE ENOUGH TO GET ME

  612. IN, BUT DRAW ME NEAR. DRAW ME NEAR."

  613. HEY, THE JAMES SAID THEY THAT DRAW N OF

  614. GOD, HE'LL DRAW N OF YOU. PRAISE GOD.

  615. AND I'M GLAD TONIGHT THAT HIS STEPS ARE

  616. A WHOLE LOT BIGGER THAN MY STEPS.

  617. >> You know, that's what revival meetings

  618. about. It's about getting closer to

  619. Jesus.

  620. You know, a lot of people have a

  621. different definition of revival. Thank

  622. God for souls getting saved in revival.

  623. >> But brother Gentry, you brother Gentry,

  624. right? Well, you don't know me, but I've

  625. know your name, preacher, I think you

  626. testify this. Revival's for the saved.

  627. >> You're right.

  628. >> And if the saved get right with God,

  629. sinners will start getting saved. That's

  630. what Psalm 51 said. And so, here's what

  631. WE NEED IN THE CHURCH. WE NEED GOD'S

  632. PEOPLE TO GET CLOSER to Jesus. So, the

  633. sinners WILL SEE SAY, "HUH, THERE'S

  634. SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THEM." RIGHT.

  635. >> Is that not what DAVID SAID IN PSALM 51

  636. WHEN HE GOT RIGHT? THEN WILL I teach

  637. transgressors your ways and sinners

  638. shall be converted UNTO THEE. IF GOD'S

  639. PEOPLE GET RIGHT, sinners will start

  640. getting saved. I believe that tonight.

  641. >> I'm talking about on Sunday morning when

  642. the doors of the Meadows Baptist Church

  643. are open, will there be anybody here

  644. expecting him?

  645. >> You're right. Come on.

  646. >> We're not preaching to I appreciate our

  647. guests being here. We're not preaching

  648. to the church down the road. my burden

  649. in these two nights, my responsibility

  650. to preach to this church. Will there be

  651. anybody here Sunday expecting Jesus?

  652. >> Come on.

  653. >> Will there be anybody here Sunday

  654. willing to embrace Jesus?

  655. >> They came. They were close. They were

  656. changed.

  657. >> I guarantee you they never

  658. >> they never forgot the day

  659. >> when Jesus

  660. >> walked IN THEIR CHURCH.

  661. >> IT CHANGED THEIR LIVES FOREVER. RIGHT.

  662. >> AND I'LL TELL YOU, IF YOU EVER GET IN A

  663. MEETING WITH JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

  664. OF GOD BEGINS TO MOVE AND THE HOLY

  665. SPIRIT OF GOD BEGINS TO WORK, YOU'LL

  666. NEVER GET OVER IT.

  667. >> OH, you can think back in your mind, and

  668. I can too, of some services where God

  669. showed up.

  670. >> And you tried to explain it, but it you

  671. couldn't explain it.

  672. >> One Feder said it was just better felt

  673. than felt. All right? I mean, you tried

  674. to explain, you tried, you you tried to

  675. say, "You should have been there." And

  676. they said, "What happened?" Well, you

  677. just should have been there. You're

  678. right.

  679. >> You can't explain it. I'll tell you,

  680. they never forgot it.

  681. >> Well, preacher, that was real good. And

  682. days gone by.

  683. >> I got 10 minutes left. And

  684. >> I'm going to be honest with you tonight.

  685. I thank God. Now, I love my heritage.

  686. All right. My oldest boy, his middle

  687. name is Maize after Maize Jackson.

  688. >> My bum boy is named Sitler after Dr.

  689. Harold B. Sitler. And my little girl is

  690. named Joyce Myers. I mean, we we name

  691. our kids after preachers. I'm just

  692. kidding. Her name's Judah. All right.

  693. Just wanted to see if you were awake to

  694. see if you were listening. Okay. All

  695. right.

  696. My little girl name is Judah Rain. My

  697. boys I named them after preachers. I'm

  698. going to tell you something

  699. respectfully. God didn't die when Harold

  700. Sitler died.

  701. >> And God didn't die when Percy Ray died.

  702. >> God didn't die when these great men of

  703. God thank God for the ministries. BUT

  704. THEY'LL be the FIRST ONE TO TELL YOU,

  705. DON'T THINK ABOUT US. GOD'S STILL GOD.

  706. YEAH.

  707. >> HERE'S WHAT MADE THE difference in those

  708. days. There are people in them churches

  709. and revival meetings that was expecting

  710. Jesus. And there are people in them

  711. revival that was embracing Jesus.

  712. >> You're right.

  713. >> There was somebody there expecting him.

  714. There was somebody there embracing him.

  715. But number three, when Jesus stood up at

  716. church, there was somebody there

  717. exalting him.

  718. >> Amen.

  719. >> Look, look, look at the text. Look at

  720. the text. Verse 29 through 40. Simeon

  721. and Anna both begin to exalt the Lord in

  722. these verses. THEY BOTH BEGAN TO LIFT

  723. HIM UP and brag on him.

  724. >> Amen.

  725. >> THE PSALMIST SAID, "OH, MAGNIFY the Lord

  726. with me." That's

  727. >> right.

  728. >> And here's where we get in trouble. We

  729. expect the preacher to magnify the Lord.

  730. >> You're right.

  731. >> We expect the preacher to have church

  732. all by himself.

  733. >> But that ain't what David said. AND LET

  734. US EXALT HIS NAME TOGETHER. DAVID'S

  735. SAYING, "I'M GOING TO NEED SOME HELP

  736. WITH THIS. I'M GOING TO NEED HELP EXON.

  737. SO, I NEED HELP FROM THE CHOIR AND I

  738. NEED HELP FROM THE SPECIAL MUSIC AND I

  739. NEED HELP FROM THE CONGREGATION AND I

  740. NEED HELP FROM THE MEN AND I NEED HELP

  741. FROM THE LADIES AND I NEED HELP FROM THE

  742. YOUNG PEOPLE. LET US EXALT HIS NAME

  743. TOGETHER.

  744. >> NOW, here's the interesting thing about

  745. this. They're magnifying and exalting

  746. Jesus in this passage

  747. and he's only eight days old.

  748. >> He ain't done nothing yet.

  749. >> You're right. Come on.

  750. He ain't done nothing yet.

  751. I mean, he's not confounded the doctors

  752. and the lawyers in the temple at age 12.

  753. He's not been baptized in the River

  754. Jordan yet. And the Holy Ghost come down

  755. on the dove. And God said, "It's my

  756. beloved son and whom I'M WELL PLEASED."

  757. HE HASN'T defeated temptation OVER THE

  758. DEVIL BY SAYING, "IT IS WRITTEN. HE HAS

  759. NOT YET walked by the Sea of Galilee and

  760. called out TO THOSE FISHERMEN, SAYING,

  761. follow me, and I'll make YOU FISHERS OF

  762. MEN." HE HAS NOT YET TURNED THE WATER TO

  763. WINE. HE'S NOT TOLD NICODEMUS, YOU MUST

  764. BE BORN AGAIN. HE'S NOT SAVED THE SOUL

  765. OF THE WOMAN AT THE WELL. HE'S NOT

  766. HEALED THE MAN OF THE POOL OF BETHESDA.

  767. HE'S NOT PREACHED THE SERMON ON THE

  768. MOUNTAIN. HE'S NOT CLEANSED THE LEPERS.

  769. HE'S NOT OPEN THE BLINDED EYES. HE'S NOT

  770. SAVED THE TAX COLLECTOR. HE'S NOT HEALED

  771. THE DEAF. HE'S NOT HEALED THE LAME. HE'S

  772. NOT RAISED THE DEAD. HE'S NOT BLESSED

  773. THE CHILDREN. HE'S NOT WALKED UP

  774. CALVAR'S HEEL, LAID DOWN HIS LIFE. HE'S

  775. NOT YET KICKED THAT STONE AWAY AND

  776. WALKED OUT ON RESURRECTION MORNING. HE'S

  777. NOT YET ASCENDED BACK TO THE FATHER UH

  778. TO BE OUR MEDIATOR AND OUR INTERCESSOR.

  779. HE AIN'T DONE NOTHING YET.

  780. >> RIGHT.

  781. >> But they still thought he was worthy to

  782. exalt

  783. >> and magnify.

  784. >> You know what this teaches us? We are

  785. not to worship the Lord for what he

  786. does.

  787. >> We are to WORSHIP THE LORD FOR WHO HE

  788. IS.

  789. >> Somebody say, "Well, when the Lord does

  790. something good, I'll praise him. He done

  791. has

  792. >> if Simeon and Anna thought he was worthy

  793. enough to brag on when he was only 8

  794. days old.

  795. >> He hadn't answered their prayers.

  796. >> He hadn't met their needs.

  797. >> HE'S NOT YET WENT TO CALVARY YET.

  798. >> HE'S NOT YET DONE EVERYTHING HE SAID

  799. HE'D DO. BUT THEY SAID HE'S STILL WORTHY

  800. AND HE'S STILL WONDERFUL. WELL, I'M

  801. LOOKING AT A CROWD TONIGHT. IF YOU'VE

  802. BEEN SAVED BY THE GRACE OF GOD AND BEEN

  803. WASHED IN THE BLOOD, JESUS HAS DONE MORE

  804. FOR YOU THAN HE DONE FOR SIMEON AND

  805. ANNA. AND I'LL TELL YOU TONIGHT, IT'S

  806. TIME THAT GOD'S PEOPLE GET OFF THE STOOL

  807. AND DO NOTHING AND SAY, "BLESS THE LORD,

  808. OH MY SOUL, AND ALL THAT'S WITHIN ME.

  809. BLESS HIS HOLY NAME." WHEN JESUS SHOWED

  810. UP, SOMEBODY WAS EXALTING HIM.

  811. >> AMEN.

  812. >> Somebody was exalting him. You know what

  813. they were exalting him about? I'm done.

  814. They were exalting him because he was

  815. sufficient.

  816. >> Verse 29, Simeon says, "Lord, now let us

  817. thy servant depart in peace according to

  818. thy word." You know what Simeon said?

  819. I've seen him. That's all I need to see.

  820. I don't need I DON'T NEED TO SEE

  821. ANYTHING ELSE. JESUS IS ENOUGH.

  822. >> HALLELUJAH.

  823. >> JESUS IS ENOUGH. THAT'S ALL I NEED TO

  824. SEE WAS HIM. AND I'LL TELL YOU, WHEN

  825. JESUS SHOWS UP, IT'LL GO BEYOND THE

  826. PREACHER. IT'LL GO BEYOND THE CHOIR.

  827. IT'LL BE ALL BEYOND THE SPECIAL. BUT

  828. JESUS WILL BE ENOUGH.

  829. a wife only because of what she does for

  830. him. He loves the meals that she cooks.

  831. He loves the laundry she does. She loves

  832. the house that he cleans. But suppose

  833. one day she becomes sick

  834. >> and no can no longer do those things. If

  835. his love disappears, it proves he never

  836. loved her. He only loved what she did.

  837. >> That's how a lot of people treat Jesus.

  838. >> You're right. Come on. But I'll tell

  839. you, if he never answered another

  840. prayer,

  841. >> if he had another need,

  842. >> if he never put another breath in my

  843. body,

  844. >> oh, Micah Henson said, "If this were my

  845. last day,

  846. >> I'd shout Jesus all the way."

  847. >> AMEN.

  848. >> IF HE NEVER BLESSED ME AGAIN, HE'S

  849. WORTHY TO WORSHIP FROM NOW TO ETERNITY.

  850. >> AMEN.

  851. >> He was sufficient. You remember there?

  852. I've got I got four minutes. He didn't

  853. put no time on, but I do that. Okay.

  854. You remember there Joseph is in Egypt.

  855. Genesis 45. He sends them wagons to

  856. Jacob to go get his daddy. Jacob don't

  857. believe the word of his brethren. I

  858. mean, they do have a habit of lying.

  859. Y'all remember that story?

  860. >> And when Jacob saw the wagons that

  861. Joseph sent, he said, "It is enough.

  862. I'll go and see Joseph before I die."

  863. And when he got there, Brother Gentry,

  864. you know what Jacob said to Joseph? Now

  865. let me die

  866. >> now that I've seen thy face. He didn't

  867. ask He didn't ask Joseph, "Well, can you

  868. take me on a tour of Egypt?"

  869. >> That's right.

  870. >> Can you take me to see the pyramids? No.

  871. He said, "All I wanted to see was you."

  872. >> We got a lot of people, they talk about

  873. heaven, way I can't wait to see walls of

  874. Jasper. I can't wait to see gates of

  875. pearl. I can't wait to see a street of

  876. gold. I'm going to tell you, honey, if

  877. that's all you think about heaven is the

  878. material things you have a carnal

  879. mindset about heaven. HEAVEN'S NOT WALLS

  880. OF JASPER. HEAVEN'S NOT GATES OF PEARL.

  881. BUT HEAVENS, WHAT SIMEON SAW WHEN HE SAW

  882. HIS FACE,

  883. >> he was sufficient.

  884. >> He was seen. In verse 30, and 32, my

  885. eyes have seen thy salvation.

  886. >> He was supreme. I'm cutting a lot of

  887. this out. Verse 33, 34, and 35. You what

  888. Simeon's talking about there? He said,

  889. "This child is set for the fall and rise

  890. again of many in Israel." He's going to

  891. die, but he's going to rise.

  892. >> Amen.

  893. >> How'd he know that? He'd been reading

  894. the book.

  895. He was supreme.

  896. >> Amen. I'm done. Verse 36, 37, 38. He was

  897. shared.

  898. >> Anna comes in. Look at verse 7. Verse

  899. 38. I'm done. And she coming in in that

  900. instant gave thanks likewise to the

  901. Lord. When she saw Jesus, she said,

  902. "Praise God, he's here."

  903. >> But watch what she did. And spake of him

  904. to all them that look for redemption in

  905. Jerusalem. Yeah.

  906. >> You see, when Jesus showed up, she

  907. wasn't satisfied keeping it to herself.

  908. >> But she began to tell everybody else,

  909. >> right?

  910. >> He's here.

  911. >> He's here. In fact, Mark 2 said it was

  912. noised that he was in the house.

  913. >> Right.

  914. >> I wonder Sunday morning

  915. >> here at Meadows Baptist Church. You know

  916. in that temple there were many priests,

  917. many worshippers, many religious people,

  918. but only a couple people that day was

  919. expecting Jesus. Only a couple people

  920. embraced him. Only a couple people

  921. exalted him.

  922. Are you going to be in that crowd?

  923. >> Come on.

  924. >> Are you going to be on that crowd that's

  925. expecting Jesus?

  926. >> You're looking for him to show up in the

  927. singing. You're looking for him to show

  928. up in the testimony.

  929. >> You're looking for him to show up in the

  930. preaching. You're looking for him to

  931. show up in the prayer time. Are you

  932. expecting? And when he shows up, are you

  933. going to stay where you're at? Are you

  934. going to embrace him? Are you going to

  935. get closer?

  936. >> Yeah.

  937. >> And then are you going to exalt him

  938. >> for who he is?

  939. >> That's what ought to happen when Jesus

  940. comes to church. Let's stand together. I

  941. appreciate your attention. Father, I

  942. thank you tonight for the liberty to

  943. preach the word of God. Thank you, Lord,

  944. for helping us tonight. Lord, I pray

  945. that there'd be somebody here tonight

  946. that say, "I want to expect Jesus. I

  947. want to embrace him. I want to exalt

  948. him." Lord, if there's one here tonight

  949. that doesn't know you as their savior, I

  950. pray God that you deal with their heart

  951. and conviction. save them by your grace.
