  1. All right, good morning everybody. Uh

  2. good to see you in the house of the

  3. Lord. We'll go ahead and get started

  4. Sunday school this morning. Thank you

  5. for being here and uh appreciate the

  6. beautiful day the Lord's given us to be

  7. in the house of God and uh he's been

  8. good to us. Thank him for that. And uh

  9. get my calendar pulled up here.

  10. I trust you've had a good week this

  11. week. And I want to start off this

  12. morning with saying uh thank you to

  13. everybody that came out yesterday and

  14. helped us u with the uh visitation there

  15. uh in town at Springfest. And we was

  16. able to hand out uh pretty much every

  17. invite that we had and they gave out

  18. some waters and sold some snow cones

  19. yesterday. So to help buy the team's uh

  20. new shirts for youth camp and so um what

  21. did we end up with out of that? About

  22. about $300.

  23. Praise the Lord for that. And pretty

  24. much take care of their camp, getting

  25. them some new medicine shirts for camp.

  26. So, we're going to try to get that going

  27. in the next few weeks. But I do

  28. appreciate everybody that came out and

  29. uh the young people did a fantastic job.

  30. And uh and so it was a great blessing. I

  31. appreciate all the effort that was put

  32. into that on yesterday and appreciate

  33. God blessing it and helping it. And uh

  34. do remember uh coming up here um got

  35. normal services today um this morning,

  36. then this evening, Wednesday night

  37. church, and then next Sunday will be our

  38. family and friends day. So remember

  39. that. Be inviting people out to family

  40. and friends day. And uh um looking like

  41. next Sunday we'll I'll let you know more

  42. about it um uh when it gets here, which

  43. actually I'm probably going to let you

  44. know about it today because I'm not

  45. going to be here this coming Wednesday.

  46. So, um, what we're going to be doing on

  47. family and friends day, this this could

  48. change, but want to let you know now.

  49. Um, we're planning on using the portico

  50. out here in the front, um, for where all

  51. the music's going to be. By grace will

  52. be out here, and then we'll have

  53. preaching out there. And so, what we're

  54. going to do is we're going to rope off

  55. this front section of the parking lot

  56. over here. And uh you'll still be able

  57. to come in this entrance, but from the

  58. middle parking spaces down where Richard

  59. um parks and then those parking spaces

  60. up is going to be blocked off and all of

  61. that will be seating area. And so um

  62. those that park handicapped can come

  63. around the building. My parking our

  64. parking spaces will be open. Um all

  65. these on the front will be open and then

  66. we'll leave all those down on the lower

  67. side open as well. But we're going to

  68. have chairs out there and tents out

  69. there. The reason we want to use the

  70. portico is they're calling I think what

  71. do we say about 75% chance of rain um

  72. next Sunday and so we didn't want to

  73. have it back there. We're going to try

  74. to keep everything right here in this

  75. general vicinity. So if it does get

  76. really really bad um we can just come

  77. straight from out there back in here and

  78. it not be such a big ordeal. The sound

  79. equipment everything be a whole lot

  80. easier to deal with. And so we're going

  81. to do that. We'll rope it off out here

  82. in the front. We'll we'll still have the

  83. the um the games and things like that

  84. nature for the little kids. They'll be

  85. over here and then all the food will be

  86. in the alley over here. So remember that

  87. on next Sunday um if you would please.

  88. And so pray about that. Pray God will

  89. bless it. Brother Don Anderson will be

  90. here with us that day as well as by

  91. grace. They'll be here singing and he'll

  92. be with us here that evening and uh then

  93. they'll be singing for us that afternoon

  94. as well. So, um the service that day

  95. will start at 4:30 in the evening. So,

  96. remember that we'll have morning just

  97. like normal and then the evening service

  98. will be uh at 4:30. Probably not have

  99. any choir singing that night just due to

  100. it being outside. So, uh remember that

  101. uh that evening if you would please and

  102. uh get me other dates up here. Youth

  103. Sunday coming up on the 31st and uh we

  104. we will have choir practice if Miss

  105. Melie you got the 27th available that

  106. Wednesday night. Okay. We'll have choir

  107. practice for the youth choir on the

  108. 27th, that evening, Wednesday evening.

  109. Uh so remember that. And then youth

  110. Sunday the 31st. And uh whatever job you

  111. want for that, come see me. We'll get

  112. you put in the spot for that. I'll say

  113. this, don't just wait till Youth Sunday.

  114. Amen. I know there ain't much of our

  115. young people here today, but you don't

  116. got to wait till Youth Sunday to do

  117. that. They can do it anytime. I'll give

  118. them a job anytime they want one.

  119. Somebody say amen.

  120. But the 31st, youth Sunday, June 1st,

  121. ladies fellowship, and then Thursday

  122. there, the 4th will be men's fellowship.

  123. Bible school be coming up the 14th

  124. through the 17th. And so remember that,

  125. be praying about that. Praying God would

  126. bless it and everything come together

  127. well for that. And then homecoming and

  128. Father's Day on the 21st. Be praying

  129. about these days coming up if you would

  130. please. And remember all of these in

  131. prayer. Okay. And is anything else?

  132. new cleaning schedule out in the forer

  133. um for uh the rest of the month of May

  134. into June. So remember that as well as

  135. you leave today and uh we will be having

  136. visitation pretty regular coming up and

  137. I know everybody's busy and so but we'll

  138. be having visitation there especially

  139. into June. Definitely going to go those

  140. two weeks before Bible school and going

  141. to try to go one time a week maybe two

  142. just uh make sure you're out inviting

  143. people and inviting young people. We was

  144. very did was able to do great work

  145. yesterday. We probably had I think we

  146. had 150 of those flyers that you made

  147. and we gave out every one of those and a

  148. bunch of our church tracks, Bible uh

  149. school invites and uh every water bottle

  150. had a door hanger church track on it

  151. with a gospel on the back of it. And so

  152. no telling what God will do um with what

  153. was done yesterday. But I do appreciate

  154. all the labor that went into that on

  155. yesterday. Um prayer request this

  156. morning. got several here I want to make

  157. mention of. Um

  158. if you would please this morning

  159. remember a friend of mine um Dan Snow.

  160. Him and his brother Dallas um was my

  161. best friend growing up. I found out this

  162. past week that his dad passed away

  163. unexpectedly. I guess it was what

  164. Thursday morning. Thursday morning. 62

  165. years old. And uh I don't know exactly

  166. what um the cause of death was, but uh

  167. he died. It was very unexpected. And so,

  168. um, if y'all would please pray for that

  169. family today. They're going to be having

  170. his funeral service. Um, the viewing's

  171. at 1:00, funeral's at two. Um, back up

  172. where I'm from. So, I'm going to

  173. hightail it out here right after church

  174. this morning. I won't let the worship

  175. service crowd know that. But, y'all just

  176. know that cuz I'm going to have to get

  177. out and go to that this afternoon. So,

  178. if y'all would please remember them in

  179. prayer. Um, continue to remember Miss

  180. Anne and Chubby, their family,

  181. Michelle's passing. Continue to pray for

  182. them. if you would please remember them

  183. and uh the kids and her Miss Michelle's

  184. I guess son and daughter I guess and

  185. remember them in prayer as well. Pray

  186. for them and I pray God would be with

  187. them. Let's continue to pray uh for all

  188. these others that's been uh several

  189. several had procedures. Miss Janet was

  190. looking another procedure coming up.

  191. Several others um got things going on.

  192. Miss Ola, how you feel this morning?

  193. >> Good. It's good to see you.

  194. >> Amen. We've been praying for you and

  195. appreciate you. It's good to see you

  196. this morning. And so, several other

  197. requests to prayer. Let y'all update us

  198. on those. Anybody got one they want to

  199. update? Prayer. Crest praise. Yes,

  200. ma'am.

  201. >> That name again, please. M A.

  202. >> All right, let's remember that request

  203. this morning.

  204. >> Someone else. Yes, ma'am.

  205. >> Oh goodness.

  206. All right, let's remember that

  207. >> someone else this morning. Yes, ma'am.

  208. >> When When they going to do that,

  209. brother?

  210. Oh,

  211. >> they cutting you all to pieces, ain't

  212. they? Bless your heart. Just remember

  213. that in prayer. Someone else this

  214. morning. Yes, sir.

  215. >> Brother Donald.

  216. >> All right.

  217. >> Did you hear anything from Charles and

  218. Alice?

  219. >> They were home yesterday.

  220. >> They were. Okay. All right. Let's

  221. continue to pray for Sherry and her

  222. family.

  223. Any news? Good, bad, good, good, bad on

  224. Alice and Charles.

  225. >> She's got

  226. >> Okay,

  227. let's remember them in prayer.

  228. For those of you that that weren't here

  229. when I first came, um Charles and Alice,

  230. um they haven't been able to be here

  231. much really in probably a year, I guess.

  232. They come just ever so often, but just

  233. due to very bad health. But when I first

  234. came down, um they they had a a little

  235. trailer before me and Abby got moved

  236. down here. They had a little trailer

  237. down there. They would let us stay in on

  238. weekends and let us stay in on Sunday

  239. weekends, things of that nature. And

  240. when we had meetings and stuff, we would

  241. stay down here during the week. And they

  242. never charged us a dime for that. Never

  243. asked us for anything. They just let us

  244. stay there. And it was such a great

  245. blessing to us. And they've been a

  246. blessing. And do pray for them. Pray

  247. that God would help and touch them. Both

  248. of them got health needs. They're very

  249. private people. They won't tell you if

  250. they wouldn't tell you if they was

  251. dying, but just pray for them. Pray that

  252. God would would help them and uh be with

  253. them during these days. So, is there any

  254. other requests of prayer this morning?

  255. All right, let's pray about that. Pray

  256. God will touch and help her. Amen. Go

  257. ahead, sister.

  258. >> Yes.

  259. Oh goodness.

  260. >> Yeah.

  261. Yeah. Let's definitely remember that in

  262. prayer.

  263. that family remember that this morning.

  264. Someone else. Yes.

  265. must remember that

  266. it's been been burdened for your family

  267. here late brother Matt and Spar missing.

  268. I talked to him there a few weeks ago

  269. and babies scared of sickness. So let's

  270. pray pray pray for them and the others

  271. pray God will help them. I tell you

  272. what, it don't take absolutely nothing

  273. anymore for people to get scared. And uh

  274. we need to pray God will keep us all

  275. strong. And you say, "Is that a mark

  276. against him?" No, I'll be honest with

  277. you, probably this probably the

  278. strongest Christian I've ever met is my

  279. wife's pastor. And him and his wife when

  280. CO came through, they about just shut

  281. down um through CO. Most faithful, most

  282. faithful man I've ever been around in my

  283. life. But but that sickness really

  284. really got to them. And I'll tell you

  285. the reason why it did. Their choir

  286. leader, young man by the name of

  287. Jeremiah, he was probably I guess what

  288. was he 34 32 um killed him. Co killed

  289. him. And uh when that happened, they

  290. just and uh I tell you it's easy once

  291. you go through that. It's hard to ever

  292. get out of that because I know it's not

  293. it's not constantly like that. But once

  294. you've been through that, it takes a

  295. long time to get get back out of that.

  296. And so let's pray. There's several

  297. families here I think about that was

  298. their reason. They had a little child

  299. and then out of that fear of sickness,

  300. they haven't come back. And u you know,

  301. I think that's valid for some point in

  302. time, but we ought not ever let

  303. something keep us out forever. And uh

  304. let's let's pray. Pray for them. If you

  305. would please pray that God be with them

  306. and help them. Amen. Someone else got a

  307. prayer request this morning. Yes, ma'am.

  308. Yes.

  309. >> Amen. Let's remember that. And uh let's

  310. remember Don and Eric this morning. If

  311. you would please pray for them and pray

  312. God watch over them. Um they're they're

  313. traveling today. So pray for them. If

  314. you would please pray God be with them

  315. and protect them and uh be with them and

  316. help them. Amen. Someone else got a

  317. request of prayer this morning.

  318. Tell me his name again. Sister

  319. Hollister. Let's remember that.

  320. someone else this morning before we

  321. pray.

  322. >> Yeah,

  323. do that. Just remember that

  324. funerals can be a ministry.

  325. and uh seen a lot of people get saved um

  326. down through the years. Not in funerals.

  327. I saw I only time I ever seen that

  328. happens when we had Mark Southern's

  329. funeral um up there at I guess that's

  330. Colonial I guess is where that was at.

  331. But I've seen a lot of people get saved

  332. as a result of funerals. And let's do

  333. pray about that. Remember that. Let's

  334. pray for the lost. Amen. I know we got

  335. every one of us got somebody on our

  336. heart. one I've been praying about

  337. coming in this church um several months

  338. ago and ain't been back since. Let's

  339. pray about that and stay burdened. Stay

  340. burdened about it and don't go to sleep

  341. on God on that. Stay burdened by it and

  342. uh pray continue to pray for those that

  343. are lost without God. Pray for those

  344. that are not right with God. Amen. Pray

  345. God will help them and touch them. Amen.

  346. Is there any other requests of prayer

  347. this morning?

  348. >> Amen.

  349. Amen.

  350. >> Someone else. Anything else before we

  351. pray?

  352. All right. Yes, sir.

  353. >> Mac up. You said okay.

  354. All right. Just remember that.

  355. All right. Anything else this morning?

  356. >> All right. Let's remember our

  357. missionaries. Pray for them and continue

  358. to pray about uh the tabernacle

  359. children's home uh ministry. Pray about

  360. what the Lord would have us to give

  361. there. I've got a number on my heart.

  362. Probably going to ask the men about it

  363. tonight in prayer room and then we'll

  364. present that to you this evening if the

  365. men agree with us in the prayer room

  366. tonight. So, um remember that. Um, and

  367. if you want to give, I had some ask me

  368. uh maybe if um if we do take up some

  369. money to send there to let them know um

  370. that they would give towards that. And

  371. so we may take up a special offering

  372. after the service tonight and just send

  373. that down with an offering um from the

  374. church uh to help with that. So if you

  375. would just pray about that today

  376. throughout the course of the day and

  377. pray God would have his way in that. All

  378. right. All right. Pray for the service

  379. today. Pray for the singing and the

  380. choir specials. Pray everything be said

  381. and done. Glorify the Lord. Pray the

  382. Lord to help me today. I need his help.

  383. And I pray God to give us grace. Amen.

  384. All right. If all hearts are free, let's

  385. come and pray. All right. Thank you for

  386. being here this morning.

  387. Father, thank you for this day. Thank

  388. you for your grace and your mercy, for

  389. your love. Thank you for your

  390. blessed mercy towards us, Lord. Your

  391. presence, God, that you've given us in

  392. such abundance, God. Thank you, Father,

  393. for these hearts that's come out, Lord,

  394. to be a part of this church service

  395. today. God, I realize we're nothing

  396. without thee. God, I thank you today,

  397. Father, that with you, Lord, Paul said,

  398. we can do all things. I can do all

  399. things through Christ, which

  400. strengthenth me. And God, I pray today,

  401. Lord, that you would strengthen us,

  402. Lord, that the love of God would be shed

  403. abroad in our hearts today, God, that we

  404. would enjoy fellowship, but Lord, that

  405. we would worship. We would praise and

  406. honor you today and glorify your name

  407. because, Lord, you're worthy, Lord, of

  408. everything, God, we deserve nothing, but

  409. God, you have given us everything, Lord,

  410. and we thank you for that today, God.

  411. Thank you for these people. I pray you

  412. bless each one of them or love them

  413. dearly. And God, I pray that you bless

  414. them for their coming to the house of

  415. God today. ask you God you would help us

  416. today get all glory unto yourself and

  417. may all your will be done Lord and

  418. everything that's said done Lord

  419. everything that's sung Lord the

  420. offerings that'll be taken God I pray

  421. that you would get glory out of those

  422. father help us to give with a willing

  423. heart father and a ready mind god I ask

  424. you father uh this morning Lord that you

  425. would uh minister grace Lord to each

  426. heart father as the word of God will be

  427. shared today I pray father for those

  428. lord that are sick and afflicted this

  429. morning god that you be with them lord

  430. any not able to be with us today cause

  431. the different illnesses God and things

  432. we pray you'd help them today we pray

  433. for those God in our church uh Lord that

  434. are sin sick father not right with you

  435. God that you would help them draw them

  436. back to a place of nearness God close to

  437. you again that I pray father you remove

  438. the blindness Lord on their eyes God for

  439. those that are lost Lord that they would

  440. come to a place of repentance and be

  441. saved by the grace of God I pray for

  442. these young people God that you would

  443. put your hedge about them protect them

  444. their minds their purity that I pray

  445. that you would give them strength and

  446. wisdom uh Lord for their days ahead God.

  447. We realize Lord that they need to give

  448. the best of their life Lord to you these

  449. young years God that they would submit

  450. all to you Lord and do everything that

  451. you asked them to and be willing and

  452. obedient Father for whatever God you

  453. call upon them to do. God, I ask you,

  454. Father, today that you continue to bless

  455. and put your hand on our church. And

  456. God, as we go forward, I pray, Father,

  457. you'd be exalted, Lord. That you would

  458. be uh worshiped in our midst today, God,

  459. that you would be praised and extolled

  460. for who you are and for all that you've

  461. done. God, we ask you please to help us

  462. today and get all glory to yourself. And

  463. we pray that Jesus would be lifted up

  464. today, Father, and many sinners would be

  465. saved as a result of these services. And

  466. we thank you so much for loving us.

  467. Thank you, God, for the blood for

  468. Calvary. Thank you, God, Lord, for all

  469. that you've done for us. You've been so

  470. good. We give you praise today, Lord. We

  471. pray once again, Lord, for every

  472. request, for every lost loved one, God,

  473. for every procedure, God, for every

  474. situation, Lord. We pray, God, that you

  475. would give grace for these that are

  476. berieved. L. We pray for them today,

  477. God, that you would help them and be

  478. with them today. Well, we love you.

  479. Thank you so much for loving us. We ask

  480. all this in Jesus name. Amen.

  481. All right.

  482. Appreciate that, sister. Amen.

  483. All right. Mark's Gospel chapter number

  484. nine.

  485. Mark's Gospel, chapter number nine.

  486. And uh Lord willing, unless he changes

  487. my mind, this is where we'll be for

  488. today. And so if you want to put your

  489. bookmark there, we'll be there all day

  490. today, Lord willing. And uh

  491. I want to deal with a subject out of

  492. this chapter. Something um I've preached

  493. about a lot in passion. I don't know

  494. I've ever preached a message on it here

  495. at the church, but I want to talk to you

  496. out of chapter nine here about the

  497. record of the transfiguration of Christ.

  498. And we'll read a few verses here and

  499. then we'll talk about it a little bit

  500. this morning. and uh and then we will

  501. move on through the service. And I just

  502. want to say I'm glad I'm saved this

  503. morning.

  504. >> Amen. And uh I'm not going to hell.

  505. >> Amen.

  506. >> Amen. And it's just good. I'm I'm on the

  507. right. You know, I've heard people say

  508. my whole life, you know, well, it's just

  509. good to be on the right side of the

  510. dirt. And uh you know, that's true. I'm

  511. I'm thankful for that. But I'll tell you

  512. this, uh man, I'd rather be on the wrong

  513. side of the dirt saved than on the right

  514. side of it lost. Amen. And uh man, I'm

  515. telling you, God has been good and I

  516. appreciate his blessings. I appreciate

  517. each one of you. Let's look here. Mark

  518. chapter number 9 verse number one. The

  519. Bible says, "And he said unto them,

  520. Jesus speaking, verily I say unto you,

  521. that there be some of them that stand

  522. here, which shall not taste of death

  523. till they have seen the kingdom of God

  524. come with power." And after six days

  525. Jesus talkth with taketh with him Peter

  526. and James and John and leadth them up

  527. into an high mountain apart by

  528. themselves. And he was transfigured

  529. before them. And his raignment became

  530. shining exceeding white as snow. So as

  531. no fuller on earth can white them. There

  532. appeared unto them Elias with Moses. And

  533. they were talking with Jesus. And Jesus

  534. answered and said, or Peter answered and

  535. said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for

  536. us to be here. Let us make three

  537. tabernacles, one for thee, and one for

  538. Moses, and one for Elias. For he wish

  539. not what to say, for they were so

  540. afraid." And uh I'll just put this in

  541. there. When you don't know what to say,

  542. what do you do?

  543. Amen. Verse seven. And there was a cloud

  544. that overshadowed them. And a voice came

  545. out of the clouds, saying, "This is my

  546. beloved son. Hear him." And suddenly,

  547. when they had looked round about, they

  548. saw no man anymore, save Jesus only with

  549. themselves. And as they came down from

  550. the mountain, he charged them that they

  551. should tell no man what things they had

  552. seen, till the Son of Man were risen

  553. from the dead. And they kept that saying

  554. with themselves, questioning one with

  555. another what the rising from the dead

  556. should mean. And they asked him, saying,

  557. "What say the scribes uh that Elias must

  558. first come?" And he answered and told

  559. them, "Alias verily cometh first, and

  560. restoreth all things, and how it is

  561. written of the Son of Man, that he must

  562. suffer many things, and be said it not.

  563. But I say unto you that Elias is indeed

  564. come, and they have done unto him

  565. whatsoever they listed, as it is written

  566. of him." Father, I ask you for a few

  567. moments that you would help us this

  568. morning. Give us wisdom beyond

  569. ourselves. speak to us and through us.

  570. Get glory unto yourself and we'll thank

  571. you for what you do. Bless these people

  572. and Lord, we give you thanks for it all.

  573. We ask it in Jesus name. Amen. This

  574. chapter introduces us to this moment in

  575. history where Jesus is transfigured.

  576. Now, I like this text because there's a

  577. lot of implications here. And I'm going

  578. to try not to deal with much of that

  579. today in Sunday school just because it's

  580. really um prophetic in nature and deals

  581. with, you know, a lot of preaching can

  582. be done out of this text. But I want to

  583. just give you face value here. It's just

  584. some truths I feel like God's laid on my

  585. heart in this text. Of course, Jesus

  586. here is uh has brought six days. The

  587. Bible says there in verse two, he's he's

  588. took with him Peter, James, and John.

  589. These three men are labeled as the sons

  590. of thunder in scripture. And the Bible

  591. says that he leads them up into a high

  592. mountain apart by themselves. And then

  593. it says, "And he was transfigured before

  594. them." Now that word transfigured there

  595. literally translates in the Greek over

  596. to the word metamorphize or

  597. metamorphosis is that word. And we think

  598. about uh you remember in school when

  599. they taught you that process uh in

  600. science create or some I had creation

  601. science some different things that it

  602. would be in but it's a a matter of

  603. science and they teach you that

  604. metamorphosis is the picture of a a

  605. caterpillar as it would grow up in go up

  606. into a cocoon and spin itself into that

  607. thing and then it would come out what

  608. does it come out as a a butterfly right

  609. and so that that image that

  610. transfiguring here in the text is

  611. basically expressing to us the same

  612. image that Christ here in the text. Let

  613. me let me say this, okay? And I'll I

  614. will move on here with the thought. But

  615. what this was to do was to exalt him him

  616. before them. Now, we know basically the

  617. life of Christ, you'll find there's um

  618. at least three different instances where

  619. God speaks from heaven. When we go back

  620. to Matthew chapter number three, there

  621. at the beginning when Jesus is being

  622. baptized in the Jordan River by John,

  623. the Bible says that the Holy Spirit uh

  624. descends in in bodily form like unto a

  625. dove. And then God speaks from heaven,

  626. this is my beloved son in whom I am well

  627. pleased. And so there is that first in

  628. instance where God speaks from heaven in

  629. the life of Christ. And then we look

  630. over to the last instance in the in the

  631. gospel of John 12 when Jesus is praying.

  632. You know he he makes this famous

  633. statement except the corn of wheat

  634. fallen to the ground and died abideth

  635. alone. And then he goes down through the

  636. list uh talking about how he's going to

  637. the cross. He is headed to suffer. And

  638. he gets to the end of the statement that

  639. he makes in John 12 and he makes this

  640. statement. He says, "Father, glorify thy

  641. name." And God speaks back from heaven

  642. and says,"I have both glorified it and

  643. will glorify it again." And so what that

  644. means is is that God when he spoke that

  645. last time to Christ on this earth, he

  646. was saying, "All right, you I have been

  647. glorified. You have glorified your

  648. father in your life." And when he says,

  649. "I have will both glorifi," he said,

  650. "I've both glorified it and will glorify

  651. it again." And he was saying, I've

  652. you've been glor you've glorified me in

  653. your life, but I will be glorified as

  654. well in your death. And that's why Jesus

  655. prays the way that he does in John 17

  656. that the father is to be exalted. And so

  657. in this text though, this deals with the

  658. emphasis here for his disciples. Now,

  659. it's interesting to me, he has three

  660. disciples here. And then you notice in

  661. the text there is three men that appear.

  662. There's Elias, Moses, and Jesus. And

  663. this matter of transfiguration, it was a

  664. exalted position of Christ. The Bible

  665. says he takes them up into a high

  666. mountain. And so he is exalted. He goes,

  667. they go, he takes them to the highest

  668. point that they can get to. But then he

  669. goes a little bit further than that. And

  670. he, the Bible says he is transfigured

  671. before them. And out of him being

  672. exalted in verse two, he is encompassed.

  673. In verse three, the Bible says his

  674. raignment became shining and see

  675. exceeding white as snow. And so the

  676. brightness of his glory is expressed.

  677. Now I don't know that this is a full

  678. revelation to them of who Christ is in

  679. his eternal state, in his exalted glory,

  680. but I do know that his his appearance

  681. was changed. I do know that when Christ

  682. went up on this mountain, he was

  683. transfigured in the brightness of his

  684. glory. I think he's definitely a looking

  685. a lot closer to the son of god that he

  686. looked in heaven before he came down in

  687. this text because he looks different

  688. than he does in the flesh. And so he's

  689. encompassed by glory of course this rad

  690. radiating light uh off of him. The Bible

  691. says it be he became shining his

  692. raignment became shining exceeding white

  693. as the snow. Mark describes it here. So

  694. as no fuller on earth can wipe them that

  695. that fuller there is a launderer a

  696. cleaner of garments. And he says there's

  697. not a single one that could make a

  698. garment as white as the garment that

  699. Christ was wearing in this text. And so

  700. he is exalted. He is encompassed in

  701. light. But then there is this expression

  702. here. Of course the Bible says there in

  703. verse four. Look what your Bible said.

  704. And there appeared unto them Elias with

  705. Moses and they were talking with Jesus.

  706. Now, there's a lot of different things

  707. that can be said about this. All right?

  708. But basically, what I want you to get

  709. out of this this morning is that out of

  710. their transfiguration, there comes a a

  711. period of talking here. There's a

  712. dialogue that takes place between Elias

  713. and Moses. Now, there's a representation

  714. that you need to get out of this. When

  715. we think of Moses, what do we think

  716. about? We think about the law, don't we?

  717. The first five books of the Bible, the

  718. pen, the penitute. Amen. That's the the

  719. law. And so then when we think about

  720. Elijah, he is a prophet there, the book

  721. of first kings, he comes on the scene

  722. there about chapter number 181 17 in

  723. there. And Elijah is that prophet of God

  724. that appears uh to prophesy. And the

  725. Bible says that he turned the the rain

  726. off from heaven for a space of three and

  727. a half years. So there's an emphasis

  728. here. Moses represents the law. Elijah

  729. represents the prophets. And then the

  730. Bible says, "And they were talking with

  731. Jesus." So we have the law here speaking

  732. to Jesus. We have the prophets here

  733. speaking with Jesus. But you say,

  734. "Preacher, what did they talk about?" I

  735. ask myself this question. But the Bible

  736. answers the question. You know, I I

  737. found this the most the most helpful

  738. thing when studying the Gospels is is is

  739. looking at them cross references and

  740. going to the other text where it talks

  741. about the same thing. Listen to what

  742. Luke says about this instance in Luke

  743. chapter number 9.

  744. Luke chapter 9 verse number 31. What

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  745. were they talking about? The law is

  746. present. Moses is present. Elijah is

  747. present. The prophets are present there.

  748. The Bible says in verse number 30 of

  749. Luke chapter 9, this same account, verse

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  750. 29, let's look there first. Luke 9:29.

    Luke 9:29

  751. And as he prayed, the fashion of his

  752. countenance was altered, and his

  753. reignment was wide and glistering. And

  754. behold, there talked with him two men,

  755. which were Moses and Elijah, who

  756. appeared in glory, and spake, notice

  757. this, and spake of his decease, which he

  758. should accomplish at Jerusalem. So, this

  759. conversation is obviously not veiled.

  760. I'll say these these individuals are not

  761. veiled because Peter and John uh let me

  762. put it this way. I don't know that Peter

  763. and John and James knew who Moses and

  764. Elijah was when they were up there on

  765. the mountain. But I do know this, they

  766. knew when they recorded this text. And

  767. so whether or not Jesus told them, we

  768. don't know. But I, you know, I I

  769. personally believe that they knew who

  770. they were. I think that the radiance

  771. that shined about them, it was pretty

  772. well evident. Maybe something about

  773. their appearance signified that one was

  774. Moses and one was Elijah. But I'll say

  775. what interests me about this is that

  776. they're all talking about his death. And

  777. there's an emphasis here, this

  778. expression that I mentioned. I want you

  779. to get this. All right. The law and the

  780. prophets are talking with Jesus about

  781. his death. Now, what do we think about

  782. when we think about Christ's death? We

  783. think first of all that the law is what

  784. required death to come into the world

  785. because the Bible says without the

  786. shedding of blood, there is what? No

  787. remission of sin. So the requirement for

  788. death came by the law. So Moses being

  789. present here reveals the need for the

  790. sacrifice of Christ. But then you think

  791. about Elijah being present here.

  792. Elijah's talking with Jesus and Moses is

  793. talking with Jesus. And so they are both

  794. conversating. The law revealed the need

  795. for Christ's death, but the prophets

  796. revealed the person and the time of

  797. Christ's death. They revealed that his

  798. death would indeed take place. They

  799. revealed that it would be the Messiah,

  800. the one that would come, that he would

  801. suffer and he would die. Isaiah 53

  802. describes to us that that suffering.

  803. Elijah himself believed and prophesied

  804. of this very event. Malachi speaks of

  805. this instance, and we'll deal with that

  806. in a in just a minute out of this text.

  807. But the law and prophets are

  808. conversating with Christ about his

  809. death. So, a lot of conjecture we could

  810. we could make about this. Okay? you

  811. know, um, you know, in my mind, I think,

  812. well, Christ comes to the earth, you

  813. know, some, well, some 2,000 years after

  814. Moses was here, and then Elijah comes on

  815. the scene, probably a thousand or so

  816. years after Moses. And then it's

  817. another, you know, 7 6 7 800 until

  818. Christ comes. You know, maybe they had

  819. some type of fellowship, you know, down

  820. there in the heart of the earth where

  821. they were at before. You know, the Bible

  822. says that they were in the heart of the

  823. earth. It's called what? paradise,

  824. right? Those saints of old David, you

  825. know, Adam is there and and Noah is

  826. there and Abel is there. They're in

  827. paradise with God. And so maybe they've

  828. had some conjecture before up to this

  829. point. I'm I'm not I'm just food for

  830. thought, okay? It's what it is. All

  831. right? Take it or leave it. It ain't

  832. worth anything. But it's we're just

  833. talking about it. Okay? But maybe

  834. they've had some conjecture up to it

  835. about this point. But in this text, they

  836. come back talking about this instance

  837. again. Now what is Jesus purpose? What

  838. if what do we always say Christ primary

  839. purpose was being on this earth was to

  840. die. And so when they came to this earth

  841. the conversation was not about his

  842. ministry. It was not about his miracles

  843. but the conversation was about his

  844. substitutionary sacrifice for the sin of

  845. mankind. And the law and the prophets

  846. throughout the Old Testament indicate

  847. this matter. But then you've got verse

  848. number five. And I, you know, I can con

  849. kindly compare myself to it in this

  850. instance because we really don't know

  851. what they were talking about other than

  852. his death. We know they were speaking of

  853. his death that he should accomplish. But

  854. notice verse 5. The Bible says, "And

  855. Peter answered and said to Jesus,

  856. "Master, it's good for us to be here."

  857. Now,

  858. this is I mean that's that's a true

  859. statement. Wouldn't you agree? These

  860. three men there are standing there

  861. seeing the son of God exalted. They are

  862. they are seeing him encompassed by

  863. glory. The expression is seen. The law

  864. and the prophets there are witnessing

  865. under the gospel. Jesus the person of

  866. the gospel himself the person of the

  867. faith that should come. And Peter says

  868. it's good for us to be here. The

  869. expression they have they are taken in

  870. but they do not understand all that is

  871. taking place in this text. And so out of

  872. this conversation that Jesus and Moses

  873. and Elijah are having, Peter and these

  874. other men are standing looking on. And

  875. this is what he says. It's good for us

  876. to be here. Let us make three

  877. tabernacles. One for thee and one for

  878. Moses and one for Elijah. Now when you

  879. think about a tabernacle, what do you

  880. think about? We my mind always goes back

  881. to the tabernacle in the wilderness. All

  882. right? And we and we think about the

  883. emphasis that God placed on that thing.

  884. The honor that was there, Moses, the way

  885. in which it was supposed to be carried,

  886. the way it was adorned, all the honor

  887. that encompassed, what that tabernacle

  888. represented was because of what was holy

  889. on the inside of that.

  890. >> And that tabernacle was a house. It

  891. literally means a a building, a house to

  892. dwell in. And when Peter says, "Let us

  893. make three tabernacles," he's saying,

  894. "All right, we need to honor the

  895. holiness of these three men with a

  896. house." That's basically what he's

  897. saying. We need to honor these three

  898. men. We've got the law, we've got the

  899. prophets, and we've got Jesus Christ,

  900. the Messiah. And we need to make a house

  901. for all three to honor their holiness.

  902. Now, in a sense, we would say that's

  903. commendable. But you understand when we

  904. look at this text, we realize who is

  905. primary here. Verse six, the Bible says,

  906. "For he whis not what to say, for they

  907. were so afraid." Now, I'll say this. He

  908. he was he was pretty, you know, he was

  909. pretty straight. He was pretty right

  910. about what he said, but his eyes were in

  911. the wrong place. Felt like it was

  912. probably the best thing he could have

  913. said at the time, the best thing he

  914. could have done was say nothing at all

  915. and listen. But the Bible says after he

  916. has spoken this word concerning this

  917. tabernacle, the Bible says in verse 7,

  918. there was a cloud that overshadowed them

  919. and a voice came out of the cloud

  920. saying, "This is my beloved son. Hear

  921. him." And so I personally believe here

  922. in the text again there is another

  923. instance of God revealing the Trinity.

  924. Again, you say, "What is that?" Well,

  925. notice the verse verse 7. is a cloud

  926. often representing the presence of the

  927. Holy Spirit. When you look back in the

  928. Old Testament in Solomon's temple, the

  929. Bible says the cloud descended. When he

  930. had offered his prayer, that cloud

  931. descended. The glory of the Lord filled

  932. the house of the temple of the Lord. The

  933. Bible says, "And so the cloud

  934. representing the presence of the spirit

  935. of God and a voice came out of the cloud

  936. saying, "This is my beloved son." So

  937. there is the cloud representing here the

  938. spirit of God, the voice representing

  939. the father. In verse number eight, the

  940. Bible says, "And suddenly when they had

  941. looked round about, they saw no man

  942. anymore

  943. save Jesus only with themselves." And so

  944. God pinpoints the message of the gospel

  945. in this text. You say, "What is that?"

  946. Well, let me give you this. All right?

  947. What did Paul when he talked to the

  948. church at Galatia? When he wrote the

  949. epistle to the Galatians, he he he he

  950. said, "Oh foolish Galatians, who hath

  951. bewitched you?" I mean, and he and he's

  952. telling them they're trying to accompany

  953. the works of Judaism

  954. with the grace of the gospel. And

  955. they're trying to blend the two. And

  956. what are the works of Judaism founded

  957. upon? It's found upon two things.

  958. Founded upon the law and the prophets.

  959. Well, in this text, God has taken the

  960. fathers of what would be Christianity.

  961. God, Jesus looked at Peter and he said,

  962. "Upon this rock, I'll build my church."

  963. Of course, he was talking about himself,

  964. but we know that Peter was the little

  965. stone. Amen.

  966. >> His name went from Simon to Peter, that

  967. little stone. And God would use him to

  968. begin the ministry of the church. And

  969. when we think about Peter, James and

  970. John, the three most influential figures

  971. in the early church apart from the

  972. apostle Paul. And so when he says in

  973. verse number eight, then when when Mark

  974. records, suddenly when they had looked

  975. round about, they saw no man anymore.

  976. This is what God was saying. God was

  977. saying to them, "All right, there is a

  978. the the the law and Moses, they they

  979. converse with Christ, but the but at the

  980. end of the day, they have a

  981. relationship, but Christ is preeminent."

  982. >> And what this comes back to in the text

  983. is this. Peter says, "Let's make a

  984. tabernacle. We're going to honor the

  985. holiness of these men with a house." God

  986. says, "All right, y'all need to get out

  987. of the way.

  988. Jesus is there. You honor his holiness

  989. >> and you're going to be the house.

  990. >> You say, "How is that?" Well, you

  991. remember what Paul said? He said, "What?

  992. Know you not that you are the temple of

  993. God,

  994. >> right?

  995. >> The Holy Ghost lives on the inside." And

  996. so, this is the introduction. I Now, I

  997. know the church is not mentioned. It was

  998. a mystery that's revealed to Paul, but

  999. the foundational truth of who Christ is

1000. to the believer is founded in this text.

1001. The Bible says when they looked round

1002. about, they saw no man anymore save

1003. Jesus only with themselves. Now, it must

1004. have been a wonder to behold Moses and

1005. Elijah. But the truth is the greatest

1006. wonder was the one who had been with

1007. them all the time. You say, "How is

1008. that?" Well, Peter went on later to

1009. record in his epistle, he said this. He

1010. talked about this very instance and he

1011. said we have a more sure word of

  1012. prophecy

1013. that you do well that you take heed.

1014. Let's let's turn there and look at that.

  1015. All right.

1016. Turn with me to the book of second

  1017. Peter.

  1018. Second Peter chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

1019. Listen to what Peter had to say about

1020. this event. Arguably the greatest, one

1021. of the greatest events in history.

1022. Peter, James, and John beheld

1023. themselves. And listen to what he says

1024. in verse number 16, 2 Peter 1. He says,

1025. "For we have not followed cunningly

1026. devised fables when we made known unto

1027. you the power and coming of our Lord

1028. Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of

1029. his majesty. For we received from God

1030. the Father honor and glory." Isn't that

1031. interesting? Honor and glory. What was

  1032. Peter saying? Let's build a house. Let's

1033. honor you for your holiness. But notice

1034. the text. He received from God the

1035. Father honor and glory. When there came

1036. such a voice to him from the excellent

1037. glory, this is my beloved son in whom I

1038. am well pleased. And this voice which

1039. came from heaven, we heard when we were

1040. with him in the holy mount. Verse 19, we

1041. have also a more sure word of prophecy,

1042. where unto you do well that you take

1043. heed as unto a light that shineth in a

1044. dark place until the day dawn and the

1045. day star arise in your hearts. Knowing

1046. this first, you say, preacher, what is

1047. the more sure word of prophecy? Notice

1048. verse 20. Knowing this first, that no

1049. prophecy of scripture is of any private

1050. interpretation. Verse 21. For the

1051. prophecy came not in old time by the

1052. will of man, but holy men of God spake

1053. as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

1054. You say, "Preacher, how does that

1055. correlate with what we've just read?"

1056. Well, remember who we were talking

1057. about? The law and the prophets. When

1058. you sum up the Old Testament, what do

1059. you have? I know we have history books.

1060. I know we have Ruth. I know we have

1061. Esther. I know we have those other

1062. books. But when you sum up the Old

1063. Testament, what do you have? You have

1064. the law and the prophets. And so when

1065. you put Jesus in the mix, what do you

1066. have? You have the complete word. Jesus

1067. is introduced. Matthew chapter 1. The

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

1068. law said that he needed to come. The

1069. prophecy said that he would come and the

1070. gospels said that he did come.

1071. Acts said that he came and he left his

1072. spirit. The epistles say that he's

1073. living in his church. Revelation says

1074. he's coming again. All right.

1075. >> The message of the of the Bible is this.

1076. That that the law and the prophets and

1077. then when Christ came, all of that came

1078. together for what Peter called a more

  1079. sure word of prophecy.

1080. It's a finalized work. Paul described it

1081. this way in the book of Corinthians. He

1082. said, he said, "When that which is

1083. perfect is come, then that which is in

1084. part shall be done away." What was he

1085. talking about? He was talking about the

1086. sign gifts. He was talking about the

1087. miracles, the speaking in tongues and

1088. the gifts of healing and the gifts of

1089. diverse tongues and and there were other

1090. gifts that were mentioned in that. But

1091. he said when that which is perfect is

1092. come that then that which is in part

1093. shall be done away. And he was saying

1094. when God's word came when we got the

1095. full inspired word of God preserved for

1096. us, he said all the rest of that would

1097. be done away. And so we have the full

1098. history. We have the full revelation of

1099. all that God is. The law, the prophets,

1100. the gospel in the person of Jesus

1101. Christ. And listen to what Jesus says in

1102. Mark 9. He says in verse number nine,

1103. "As they came down from the mountain, he

1104. charged them that they should tell no

1105. man what things they had seen till the

1106. son of man were risen from the dead."

1107. Verse 10. And they kept that saying with

1108. themselves, questioning one another one

1109. with another what the rising from the

1110. dead should mean. And you say,

1111. "Preacher, what what was it that brought

1112. about the change in Peter? What how did

1113. he go from wanting to build a tabernacle

1114. in this text to in his epistle saying

  1115. that Bible's all I need?"

  1116. >> Right?

1117. >> This is what made the difference. It was

1118. who came and took up residence on the

  1119. inside.

1120. >> Remember what Jesus told him? He said,

1121. "Simon, Simon," he said, "Bold, Satan

1122. hath desired to have thee, that he may

1123. sift thee as wheat." He said, "But I've

1124. prayed for thee that thy faith fail

1125. not." Remember what he said after that?

1126. and when thou art converted. Well, he

1127. wasn't talking about salvation, but he

1128. was talking about that spirit of God

1129. taking up residence in his life because

1130. Peter was saved when he came to Christ.

1131. All right? But they didn't get the

1132. indwelling spirit of God until Jesus

1133. breathed on them. And he said, when they

1134. are converted, what he say? Strengthen

1135. the brethren. So that strengthening came

1136. because Peter had saw all this before.

1137. But you know what? Now, he had the

1138. witness on the inside to hook up with

1139. what he had saw before.

  1140. >> Right?

  1141. >> There's a lot of preaching that, but I'm

1142. not going to do it. Amen. And so, this

1143. strengthening came. Peter is still

1144. questioning. Verse 10 in this text,

1145. they're questioning one with another

1146. what the rising of the dead from the

1147. dead should mean. Verse 11, they ask

1148. Jesus, "What say the scribes that Elias

1149. must must first come?" And all of this

1150. comes back into this question. What he

1151. what he says in verse number 12, it

1152. comes back into this answer that he

1153. gives. Listen to what he says. Elias

1154. verily cometh first and restore all

1155. things and how it is written of the son

1156. of man that he must suffer many things

1157. and be set at not. Now, this represents

1158. the suffering of Christ, this death that

1159. Elijah and Moses were talking about with

1160. Jesus. And the disciples say, "Well,

1161. well, the Bible says Elijah has to come

1162. first before the Messiah comes back."

1163. Well, where where was Eli? Where was

1164. Elijah? This is what Jesus says. And it

1165. he says it's right. Elias must verly

1166. cometh first. He truly cometh first. And

1167. so he's not he's not denoting their

1168. question. He giving them a part of

1169. revelation. And then in verse 13, he

1170. gives them the whole revelation. Look

1171. what he says. But I say unto you that

1172. Elias is indeed come and they have done

1173. unto him whatsoever they listed as it is

1174. written of him. So the collision in

1175. their mind is they've seen Elijah,

  1176. they've seen Moses, but they're reading

1177. these prophecies in their mind. What

1178. Malachi said, Malachi chapter 4, that

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

1179. Elijah must come first. They're saying,

1180. "Well, why is Elijah not revealed

1181. himself to the world? Why is Elijah not

1182. being the man that why has he not

  1183. appeared? If you're the Messiah, isn't

1184. that a prophecy that must be fulfilled

1185. before you can reign? And Jesus says,

1186. you're right about that. But then he

1187. says in verse 13, Elias is indeed come.

1188. You say, "Preacher, Elijah didn't come

1189. back to the earth before Jesus." Well,

1190. here's the thing about that. When you

1191. look at that text, you remember there

1192. was there were some men, and I'm I'm

1193. trying not to get too out there with

1194. this, all right? But I want you to

1195. understand what I'm saying. There were

1196. some men that came to Jesus and Peter

1197. and the Lord asked Peter, he said, 'Whom

1198. do men say that I am?' You remember him

1199. saying that? Whom do men say that I am?

1200. He said, ' Some say Elias, some say

1201. Jeremiah, some say you're that prophet.

1202. You know, then Peter says, "Thou art

1203. Christ, the son of the living God." And

1204. so there were some that thought that

1205. Jesus could have been the prophet, could

1206. have been Elijah, could have been a

1207. prophet given from the Old Testament to

1208. appear. But they've come back to this

1209. prophecy and Jesus is revealing to him

1210. them here in this text that John the

1211. Baptist is the prophet that should come.

1212. Elias is indeed come. You say, "How do

1213. you know it's how do you know it's John

1214. the Baptist?" Well, it's known by that

1215. phrase in the last part of verse 13.

1216. Notice that. And they have done unto him

  1217. whatsoever they listed.

  1218. Speaks of the destruction.

1219. You remember what they they called John?

1220. He was the voice of one crying in the

1221. wilderness. Ain't that right? And what

1222. did they do to him? They cut him off.

1223. Herod, they cut his head off. I heard a

1224. man preach a message one time about the

1225. voice. When when the voice gets too

1226. loud, so you got to cut it off. He

1227. preached a message titled on killing the

1228. voice. And it comes back to this text.

1229. Jesus says how he says, "How it is

1230. written that the son of man, he must

1231. suffer many things and be said it." and

1232. all. What he's saying is his death's

1233. going to come. He said Elijah's done

1234. come and died. John the Baptist is dead.

  1235. He's been said it not. He's dead. He's

1236. gone. Jesus says, "Now it's my time."

  1237. >> Right?

1238. >> So, he ties all of that together in this

1239. text. All right? And we're going to look

1240. from verse number 14 down several more

1241. verses in the preaching hour today. I'll

1242. say this. All right. The transfiguration

1243. marks a transitional point in the

1244. ministry of Christ because from this

1245. point on, Jesus is going to draw his

1246. disciples unto himself. And I'm going to

1247. emphasize this a little bit here now,

1248. just to give you a little nugget. I want

1249. you to be able to get something extra

1250. from Sunday school. But you know what?

1251. There was there was 12 disciples,

1252. weren't there? Why did he only take

1253. three? You know, I've thought about that

1254. a lot. Jesus, you know, James, Peter,

1255. James, and John, they were the closest

1256. to the Lord. I believe that. You think

1257. about the miracle that they got to see

1258. in this text and I'll probably preach it

1259. again this morning but but I was

1260. thinking about this in this text. You

1261. see there's another miracle that takes

1262. place in this chapter in the next part.

1263. Jesus comes back to find the other nine

  1264. weak in faith.

1265. >> Not going to preach my message. All

1266. right. I'm just going to give you this.

1267. Okay. He comes back to find the other

1268. nine weak in faith. There's a boy

1269. possessed by a demon. They can't deal

1270. with it. They don't know how to handle

1271. it. Jesus has had Peter, James, and John

1272. off in his presence, but you know what?

1273. He He had that miracle for Peter, James,

1274. and John, but you know what? He also had

1275. a miracle for the nine that were left

  1276. behind.

  1277. >> Right?

1278. >> And I'll say this, you may not be

1279. everything you should be, but Jesus has

1280. got a miracle for you,

  1281. >> right?

1282. >> Amen. And I'm going to preach on that

1283. this morning out of this text. So, let's

1284. pray and ask the Lord to help us this

1285. morning. Thank you for being attended.

1286. Father, thank you for this time this

1287. morning. Thank you for the truth. Lord,

1288. I want to be like Peter, James, and

1289. John. I want to be with you. I want to

1290. be near you. But Lord, at best, God, I'm

1291. going to stumble over what I say, Lord.

1292. I'm going to say things, Father, that

1293. sound foolish, Lord, because I know in

1294. my flesh there dwelleth no good thing.

1295. And so, God, would you set a watch about

1296. our lips and God, keep us holy and pure.

1297. I pray for our church today. I pray that

1298. you would bless the worship, bless the

1299. singing, the music, touch the musician's

1300. hands, and uh Lord, for those that'll

1301. sing specials, bless the offering today.

1302. Uh we pray you'd help us in the

1303. preaching. Save the sinner nearest hell

1304. and get all glory to yourself more than

1305. anything else. We'll love you and thank

1306. you for what you do because we ask it in

  1307. Jesus name. Amen.

1308. >> Thank you for joining our service today.
