  7. Pastor Charlie Branch with a word from

  8. God.

  9. >> He is worthy of our thanks. Amen.

  10. Praise. Praise the Lord. We appreciate

  11. that tonight. If you have a Bible,

  12. invite you to turn with me back to the

  13. book of Mark this evening. Mark, chapter

  14. number nine. When you find your place,

  15. if you can and able, if you would stand

  16. on reverence to the reading of God's

  17. word, Mark, chapter number nine,

  18. Mark chapter number nine. We'll begin

  19. reading uh in verse number verse number

  20. 20. Mark chapter number nine

  21. verse number 20 the Bible says and they

  22. brought him brought him unto him. When

  23. he saw him straightway the spirit tear

  24. him and he fell on the ground and

  25. wallowed foaming and he asked his father

  26. how long is it ago since this came unto

  27. him? And he said of a child and of times

  28. it have cast him into the fire and into

  29. the waters to destroy him. Notice this.

  30. But if thou can't do anything, have

  31. compassion on us and help us. I'll be

  32. honest with you, you don't have to go

  33. too far in this life to get to that

  34. point.

  35. >> You're right.

  36. >> Was thinking about that today. You know,

  37. you say, "Preacher, where's their faith?

  38. Where where is their faith?" Well, you

  39. just get in a bad place.

  40. >> You're right.

  41. >> You'll be asking the same question.

  42. Amen.

  43. >> Notice the text. The Bible said in verse

  44. 23, Jesus said unto him, "If thou can't

  45. believe, all things are possible to him

  46. that believeth." And straightway the

  47. father of the child cried out and said

  48. with tears, "Lord, I believe, help thou

  49. mine unbelief." When Jesus saw that the

  50. people came running together, he rebuked

  51. the foul spirit, saying unto him, "Thou

  52. dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee,

  53. come out of him, and enter no more into

  54. him." And the spirit cried and ren him

  55. sore and came out of him and he was as

  56. one dead in so much that many said, "He

  57. is dead." But Jesus took him up by the

  58. hand and lifted him up and he arose.

  59. When he was come into the house, his

  60. disciples asked him privately, "Why

  61. could not we cast him out?" Notice Jesus

  62. response. And he said unto them, "This

  63. kind can come forth by nothing, but by

  64. prayer and fasting." Our Father, I come

  65. before you tonight and I ask humbly,

  66. Lord, that you would help us. But I

  67. realize, Father, we're nothing without

  68. thee. And Lord, in myself, God, tonight

  69. I have no hope. But Lord, my hope is

  70. anchored in the blood. And Lord, I thank

  71. you for the fact tonight, God, that I'm

  72. not going to heaven based upon my own

  73. works or my own merits, but Lord, my

  74. faith and trust in the finished work at

  75. Calvary. That is the gospel that you

  76. came, you died, you rose again, that you

  77. live forever more. And I trust that.

  78. Thank you for that fact tonight. And

  79. each person in this building who is

  80. saved by the grace of God, that's how

  81. they'll make it into heaven. And Lord,

  82. we all bless your name tonight for that

  83. promise. God, we ask humbly that you

  84. would help us, Lord, as we deal with

  85. these verses tonight. Give us wisdom and

  86. discernment, Lord, to know what to say

  87. and what not to say. And I pray that you

  88. would speak to us and through us tonight

  89. and get all glory unto yourself and for

  90. what you do. Well, thank you for it

  91. because we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  92. And amen, you can be seated. Thank you

  93. for standing this evening. Now, of

  94. course, we dealt with the beginning

  95. portion of this text this morning

  96. concerning this young man possessed with

  97. a demon. And we left off really with

  98. verse number 19 of the text. And I

  99. didn't really say a whole lot else about

  100. that, but I I want to lay this out to

  101. you once again concerning this instance.

  102. Now we realize the state of this young

  103. man, the position that he is currently

  104. in, the possession of the spirit that he

  105. has in this text and the pain that he is

  106. experiencing. We laid that out this

  107. morning and talked about how that this

  108. demon had brought this young man to a

  109. place of confusion. He was under

  110. complete control. He had been corrupted

  111. and ultimately was going to be consumed.

  112. And the fact of the matter is, I didn't

  113. say much about it this morning, but that

  114. was you and I before we got saved. Amen.

  115. We were under the control of the devil.

  116. We are we were corrupt by nature. David

  117. said in sin did my mother conceive me.

  118. And so we are corrupt by nature. And out

  119. of that we were left to be consumed

  120. because the wrath of God abides upon

  121. those who are lost. And I notice in this

  122. this text, we notice this young man

  123. Jesus response here in the text to this

  124. whole crowd that's around him is this in

  125. verse 19. Notice his answer. The Bible

  126. says he answered him and said, "Oh

  127. faithless generation, how long shall I

  128. be with you? How long shall I suffer

  129. you? Bring him unto me." Now, there's a

  130. lot of conjecture in the text about who

  131. he was talking to. Some say that he was

  132. talking to the scribes that were

  133. mentioned there earlier in the text in

  134. verse 14 that they were they're arguing

  135. with the disciples. And we know tonight

  136. that the scribes did not believe

  137. anything Jesus had to say. They just sat

  138. around and wasted time arguing about

  139. things that really they didn't even know

  140. about anyway. And you know what? That's

  141. what I've come to find. People that want

  142. to argue most of the time don't really

  143. know what they're talking about. Amen.

  144. And so there is they're arguing here. We

  145. could say that he was talking to them

  146. because indeed they were faithless. We

  147. also could say that he was talking to

  148. the disciples in the text because we

  149. know the Bible literally tells us that

  150. this man brought this boy to his

  151. disciples. And what did he say? They

  152. could not cast him out. Well, you

  153. understand that Jesus has just given

  154. them power over all unclean spirits and

  155. over devils and serpents. Amen. And he

  156. has given them power over this very

  157. instance. And for some reason, this one,

  158. they could not cast him out. And so, we

  159. could say that he was talking to the

  160. disciples. But I've noticed this in the

  161. text. Now, you may disagree with me this

  162. evening, but that's okay. I want you to

  163. stay with me and notice what's what the

  164. terminology is used in verse number 19.

  165. Notice the first three words of verse

  166. number 19. Say them with me, church.

  167. What's your Bible say? He answerth him.

  168. And so, you know who he's talking to?

  169. He's talking directly to this father in

  170. the text. The Bible says in verse number

  171. 17 and 18 is the plea of this father in

  172. the text recognizing that his son is in

  173. a bad way. He re reveals the fleshly

  174. pain. He reveals the family problems and

  175. he re reveals what he feels like is

  176. going to be the future position of this

  177. boy for the rest of his life. He is

  178. looking at spending the rest of his life

  179. in a place of complete and total

  180. possession by this demon. And Jesus says

  181. this in verse 19. He answerth him and

  182. saith, oh faithless generation, how long

  183. shall I be with you? How long shall I

  184. suffer you? And then he says this, bring

  185. him unto me. And so we can make the

  186. argument this evening that he is talking

  187. to the father in this text. But this is

  188. what we can agree on tonight. There is a

  189. problem of unbelief in all three

  190. parties.

  191. >> You're right.

  192. >> Amen. The father in the text, we're

  193. going to deal with that in just a

  194. minute. He's having trouble believing.

  195. The disciples obviously are having

  196. trouble with their faith because when

  197. they came to this young boy, they wanted

  198. to cast him out. But you know what? They

  199. weren't able to. And so, you know what

  200. that brought to them? That brought a

  201. problem of unbelief. And we know the

  202. scribes did not believe. Amen. And so we

  203. would agree tonight Jesus really is

  204. dealing with the entire amount of people

  205. around him. And the Bible says this that

  206. the young man is brought to him in the

  207. text. And we consider his harm, how it

  208. was it was described. It was displayed

  209. and it was unto destruction in the text.

  210. But I want you to notice the hope here

  211. in the text of this father that's

  212. mentioned. Look what your Bible says in

  213. verse number 22. He's describing there

  214. the destruction of times it has cast him

  215. into the fire and into the waters to

  216. destroy him. But notice that next

  217. phrase. But if thou can't do anything,

  218. have compassion on us and help us. You

  219. see this man in the text, we know he

  220. doesn't have much faith in this text.

  221. But I'll say this, he had enough faith

  222. that when the disciples couldn't cast

  223. him out and the scribes were murmuring

  224. against him and his son there was

  225. wallowing on the ground in pain and

  226. misery, his problem was big enough and

  227. his faith was bold enough that he stayed

  228. around long enough for Jesus to come by.

  229. Amen. AND LET ME JUST SAY THIS TO YOU

  230. TONIGHT. BOY, I FEEL SOMETHING ON THAT.

  231. HEY FRIEND, WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO

  232. DO AND EVERYTHING'S FALLING DOWN AROUND

  233. YOU, YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL JESUS COMES BY.

  234. AND WHEN HE DOES, BUSINESS WILL PICK UP.

  235. AMEN. I notice in the text, the Bible

  236. says the hope of this man number one is

  237. seen in the request for his ability.

  238. Look what he says. If thou can't do

  239. anything, he looks at Jesus. And we know

  240. his faith is weak according to the text

  241. because he's just watched the disciples

  242. try and fail. And these disciples are

  243. disciples of who? They weren't just

  244. disciples of John, but these were Jesus

  245. disciples. Amen. And they couldn't come

  246. through in the text. And so he looks at

  247. Jesus and he says, "If you can do

  248. anything, let me just say this.

  249. >> He can do anything."

  250. >> Amen. He's calling on the ability. And

  251. we know it's in doubt, but he's still

  252. asking his for his ability. Not only is

  253. he asking for the ability of the Lord to

  254. show up, but he's asking for the

  255. affection from the Lord. Notice that in

  256. the text, if thou can't do anything,

  257. look what your Bible says. Have

  258. compassion on us,

  259. >> Lord. Would you please, Lord, if you're

  260. able to do anything, would you just have

  261. some mercy? Would you just have some

  262. grace? Would you just have some

  263. compassion on us? Why is that this man

  264. recognized that why this boy, the reason

  265. this boy was in this shape was because

  266. of sin? Amen. And it may not have been

  267. his sin, but you understand it was

  268. because of sin that this boy was in this

  269. shape. And you understand if God does

  270. anything for us, IF GOD HELPS ANYBODY

  271. TONIGHT, WHETHER OR NOT you've got

  272. cancer or whatever else it is, it's

  273. going to be his compassion, if he

  274. REACHES DOWN AND TOUCHES YOUR LIFE.

  275. AMEN. He's asking for the ability, but

  276. he's also asking for the affection of

  277. God. Look what he says. If thou can't do

  278. anything, have compassion on us and help

  279. us. You know what? Sometimes that's all

  280. you're going to be able to pray. That's

  281. >> right.

  282. >> Matter of fact, it's a prayer I pray

  283. quite often. Lord, would you just help

  284. me?

  285. >> Right?

  286. >> You know what he's asking for? He's

  287. asking for aid,

  288. >> right?

  289. >> Lord, I can't do it. And you know what?

  290. In all of that unbelief and all of that

  291. doubt, we're going to deal with it in

  292. the text here. You know what? This man

  293. does something that many of us in our

  294. life have failed to do. Come on.

  295. >> And that's intercede,

  296. >> right?

  297. >> On behalf of his son. I notice this in

  298. the text. We notice this man's hope here

  299. in the text. But notice the help that

  300. comes. And I want to preach for just a

  301. little while on that subject on the

  302. power of intercessory prayer. Notice

  303. what happens in this text. This man's

  304. faith here is failing. It's fleeting.

  305. And really, if we want to talk about it,

  306. it's very fleshly at this point in time.

  307. He is looking at Jesus and he's just not

  308. seeing much hope, but he knows what he's

  309. heard and he's just going to trust what

  310. he's heard because he's not seen Jesus

  311. do anything at this point. Amen. But

  312. Jesus has a word for that. Amen. And let

  313. me just say this. If you're waiting on

  314. something, you need to be waiting on a

  315. word from God. Amen. If you're waiting

  316. for an answer, your faith is weak. It's

  317. fleeting. And really, at best, sometimes

  318. it's just a fleshly hope that you have.

  319. You just hold on because help's on the

  320. way. Amen. Notice what he says here in

  321. the text that Jesus looks at him in

  322. verse 23 and Jesus said unto him, "If

  323. thou cast believe, all things are

  324. possible to him that believeth." AND YOU

  325. SAY, "PREACHER, HOW IS IT THAT THIS man

  326. intercedes on his behalf?" Well, notice

  327. Jesus first of all points out to him the

  328. possibilities that are present. Look

  329. what he says. He says, "If."

  330. >> You know what if means? There's a

  331. possibility. Right?

  332. >> But what's the if hinging on? Look what

  333. he says. If thou can't believe,

  334. >> right?

  335. >> Come on.

  336. >> You know what he didn't say? He didn't

  337. say, "Well, if I can do it this time,

  338. >> right?

  339. >> If I can handle this one, this one might

  340. be too bad."

  341. >> Yeah.

  342. >> If I can take care of it, let me see if

  343. I can get all my ducks in a row. HAS

  344. ANYBODY HEARD THAT? IF I CAN TAKE NO, he

  345. said if you can believe.

  346. >> That man looked at him and said, "If you

  347. can do anything, Jesus said, don't worry

  348. about that. Can you believe? Amen. Can

  349. you believe? If you can believe, what

  350. does he point out in the text? HE SAYS,

  351. "WHAT, CHURCH?" ALL THINGS. You're

  352. >> right.

  353. >> All things. You know, ALL THINGS MEANS

  354. means everything. Amen. It means all

  355. things. Jesus said, "If you can believe,

  356. ALL THINGS ARE WHAT, CHURCH?" POSSIBLE.

  357. AMEN. POSSIBLE. THE POSSIBILITIES

  358. LITERALLY IN THE TEXT ARE ENDLESS. Jesus

  359. says, "IF YOU CAN BELIEVE, YOU

  360. UNDERSTAND." AND HEY, THE PROBLEM'S not

  361. with my ability, BUT THE PROBLEM IS WITH

  362. YOUR ABILITY TO BELIEVE. AMEN. AND

  363. HERE'S WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IN YOUR

  364. LIFE AND MINE. IT'S NOT A PROBLEM OF

  365. GOD'S ABILITY, BUT IT IS A PROBLEM OF

  366. WHETHER OR NOT we will believe him.

  367. Amen.

  368. >> We've got to believe. He points out the

  369. possibilities. And you say, "Preacher, I

  370. still don't see the intercession." Well,

  371. note not only the possibilities in the

  372. help, but note the prayer in the help.

  373. Notice the verse again in the text.

  374. Verse 24. And straightway the father of

  375. the child, what you Bible say? Cried

  376. out. Notice this. And said with tears,

  377. Lord, I believe.

  378. >> You know what I don't see in this

  379. prayer. He's not saying, Lord, would you

  380. help my son?

  381. >> He's not saying, "Lord, would you fix

  382. this problem?" You know what he's doing?

  383. He's putting his faith,

  384. >> you're right,

  385. >> in the Lord himself

  386. >> personally, positionally, and

  387. singularly,

  388. >> right?

  389. >> Think about this. All right. He says,

  390. "Lord, I believe." What's he believing

  391. in? He's not so much concerned about the

  392. healing

  393. >> as he is concerned about the man that's

  394. standing in front of him.

  395. >> What's he believing in? He's not

  396. believing in the healing possibility,

  397. but he is believing in the holy power of

  398. the Lord Jesus Christ. And his prayer

  399. expresses his faith. He said, "Lord, I

  400. BELIEVE. LORD, I TRUST YOU." BUT NOTICE

  401. WHAT HE SAYS. "HELP thou my unbelief."

  402. And this is the bottom line with every

  403. intercessory prayer. You don't miss what

  404. I'm going to say. The bottom line with

  405. every intercessory prayer is that phrase

  406. right there. We are willing to believe,

  407. but we're only willing to believe so

  408. far.

  409. >> Right?

  410. >> You say, "Preacher, I believe to the

  411. end." No. What you'll find is you, if

  412. you travel that thing far enough, you're

  413. going to find a doubt somewhere. All

  414. right.

  415. >> Amen.

  416. >> Every word belief is, unbelief is going

  417. to be accompanied somewhere.

  418. >> You say, "Preacher, but I thought that

  419. I'm supposed to fully believe and fully

  420. trust in the Lord." Well, you understand

  421. your flesh.

  422. >> Amen. And you are. Amen. You're to trust

  423. in the Lord with all your heart and lean

  424. not to your own understanding. But at

  425. your very best, you cannot. You will

  426. never completely, FULLY, 100%, TOTALLY

  427. PLACE IT ALL ON GOD UNTIL you get to

  428. heaven.

  429. >> That's right. Amen.

  430. >> What your job is to do is to place every

  431. bit of it that you can on him.

  432. >> Right.

  433. >> Amen. What does he say? Lord, I believe.

  434. You're going to have to help me though

  435. with what's lacking.

  436. >> You're right.

  437. >> And so this intercession here begins.

  438. What does he recognize? He says, Lord, I

  439. believe. Help thou mine unbelief. Well,

  440. he recognizes the power of God is

  441. greater than his unbelief.

  442. Think about what he's saying. Lord, I

  443. believe you can do it. Just not sure if

  444. you will.

  445. >> Right.

  446. Lord, I I believe that you can handle

  447. it, but I'm just not sure if it's going

  448. to happen the way I want it to. See,

  449. here's here's where those unbeliefs come

  450. in. You're

  451. >> right.

  452. >> Every one of us have got situations in

  453. here. Things that we're praying about,

  454. people we're interceding for. I hope you

  455. do. Amen. If you don't, you're not

  456. living by the book. Amen.

  457. >> But if you do tonight, here's what

  458. you're going to find. Every one of those

  459. situations, there's going to be a a a

  460. skiff of unbelief.

  461. >> You're right. traces of unbelief found

  462. throughout that. You know what you got

  463. to do? You got to get rid of those

  464. things

  465. >> one by one because you know what the

  466. stronger belief is. It doesn't change

  467. the power of God, but it makes the

  468. effectiveness of of it a lot greater.

  469. Amen. You can't you don't affect the

  470. power of God. But I'll say this, if I

  471. you give me five people who really will

  472. believe and trust the Lord and do their

  473. best to get the unbelief out of the way

  474. and the doubts and the fears and the

  475. failures and all that out of the way,

  476. we'll have five people that'll turn the

  477. turn Stokes County upside down. Because

  478. here's what'll happen. You'll forget

  479. about everything else in life.

  480. >> You're right.

  481. >> You won't be concerned about the people

  482. around you. Cuz here's what happens.

  483. Faith is affected by everything that

  484. surrounds you. The people, the places,

  485. the problems, everything. And the more

  486. that you get out of that, get out of

  487. that your get that out of your life, the

  488. more effective you will be.

  489. >> You're right.

  490. >> And pray. And this young man, this man

  491. in the text, he gets help because Jesus

  492. reveals to him the possibilities. He

  493. makes his prayer and is founding his

  494. faith upon the power of God. Notice the

  495. text in verse 25. We see the hope. We

  496. see the help. Notice the holy. You

  497. understand your prayer is worth nothing

  498. if it's not done to the Lord. Right?

  499. >> There's people that pray every day, but

  500. you understand that if their prayer is

  501. not made to God,

  502. >> their prayer is not made upon proper

  503. terms. Because you know, David said, "If

  504. I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord

  505. will not hear me."

  506. >> Right?

  507. >> So, if you come to him on his terms, and

  508. you pray his way, amen, show me now thy

  509. way, his will first. Amen. Thy will, thy

  510. will be done on earth as it is in

  511. heaven. Then that's a prayer that God

  512. will hear. But I notice in this text,

  513. look what's mentioned here. I'm

  514. butchering this, but it's all right. The

  515. holy here, what does the Bible say about

  516. him? Well, there's a charge that's

  517. given. This man simply believes and he

  518. makes his prayer upon the possibilities

  519. of what God can do based upon the power

  520. that he has expressed to him. And Jesus

  521. gives a charge in verse 25. What's the

  522. charge to? It's a charge to this dumb

  523. spirit. Look what the Bible says. When

  524. Jesus saw that the people came running

  525. together, he rebuked the foul spirit,

  526. saying unto him, thou dumb and deaf

  527. spirit, I charge thee, come out of him,

  528. and enter no more into him. You know

  529. what this what Jesus has done in a

  530. moment, he has brought deliverance to

  531. this young boy.

  532. >> Right?

  533. >> What nine disciples could not do, what a

  534. whole multitude and a father could not

  535. do, Jesus did it in one word. And what

  536. does that represent to us? It represents

  537. his power over this spirit. Now, I want

  538. you to I want you to get this. I'm going

  539. to move through this quickly, but I

  540. don't want you to miss this. All right.

  541. Jesus charges this spirit. The spirit is

  542. commanded to exit, but he's also

  543. commanded that he's never to enter

  544. again. Notice that. Enter no more into

  545. him. So, he has been changed eternally.

  546. You're

  547. >> right.

  548. >> Amen. As long as eternity stands, that

  549. spirit will never enter into this young

  550. man again. Is anybody in the building

  551. tonight? Note, not only the the charge,

  552. but notice the change in verse 27. Bible

  553. said in verse 26, "And the spirit cried

  554. and ran him sore and came out of him and

  555. he was as one dead in so much that many

  556. said he is dead. But Jesus took him up

  557. by the hand and lifted him up and he

  558. arose." This boy got delivered. But you

  559. understand he got restored.

  560. >> You're right.

  561. >> Amen.

  562. >> This spirit's destroyed him.

  563. >> But when Jesus grabbed him by the hand,

  564. you know what he did when he raised him

  565. up? The Bible says he arose. And that

  566. implies more than him just standing up.

  567. >> You're right.

  568. >> There was perfect healing here.

  569. >> That's right. You see, Jesus was able to

  570. charge the spirit. He was able to change

  571. the sun. But you know what? He he didn't

  572. he didn't miss in this opportunity.

  573. He gives a challenge. Notice the text.

  574. Verse 27, Jesus took him up by the hand

  575. and took him by the hand, lifted him up,

  576. and he arose. Verse 28, when he was

  577. coming to the house, his disciples asked

  578. him privately, look at this, why could

  579. not we cast him out?

  580. >> Now, doesn't that sound a whole lot like

  581. the confusion that was present in the

  582. text before? Right. Amen.

  583. >> This young boy, his whole family's

  584. confused. Now there's deliverance. He's

  585. took taken care of the spirit. He's

  586. taken care of the son. And so the

  587. father's prayer has been answered in the

  588. text. But there's still people here that

  589. have unrest.

  590. >> You ever been like that?

  591. >> You ever watch somebody get saved or

  592. watch somebody get help and you stand

  593. back and look at that and you're

  594. scratching your head.

  595. Jesus did that, but what did I have to

  596. do with it?

  597. You say, "What do you mean, preacher?"

  598. Well, have you ever prayed for somebody

  599. for a long time? This ain't selfish,

  600. okay? It's just the way the flesh is.

  601. Have you ever prayed for somebody for a

  602. long time? You want to see them get

  603. saved and you're praying that God will

  604. give you the opportunity to lead them to

  605. the Lord. The next time you see them,

  606. somebody else has led them to the Lord.

  607. >> And in your flesh, your first response

  608. is, "Well, wonder if that was my prayer

  609. or not."

  610. You say, "Preacher, what does that have

  611. to do with the text?" Well, these boys

  612. realized they didn't do anything.

  613. >> You're right.

  614. >> But let me give you this.

  615. If these boys had cast this devil out,

  616. you know what? They hadn't really done

  617. anything either.

  618. >> You're right.

  619. >> Amen.

  620. >> Come on.

  621. >> Think about this with me. Every other

  622. devil that they cast out, you know what?

  623. What name they did it in?

  624. >> The name of Jesus.

  625. >> But they asked Lord in the text, look

  626. what the Bible says. Why could not we

  627. cast them out? You know what the problem

  628. is? They're confused because of their

  629. what? their pride.

  630. >> That's right.

  631. >> They don't understand it. Look what

  632. Jesus, he gives them their clarity in

  633. verse 29. Boy, there's a lot in this

  634. verse. Look what he says. And he said

  635. unto them, "This kind can come forth by

  636. nothing but by prayer and fasting." Now,

  637. there's a million questions that flood

  638. my mind when that when I read that

  639. verse. Was it the intercessory prayer of

  640. the father that allowed this son? Was

  641. was God waiting until the father

  642. believed for this son to be healed? was

  643. God. Why did God not allow the disciples

  644. to do that in this text? Why did it take

  645. Jesus here in the text? I'll say this

  646. tonight, and this is the conclusion I

  647. came to in studying this. I don't, you

  648. know, we we would think, you know, is it

  649. a specific demon? Look what he says.

  650. This kind can come forth by nothing but

  651. by prayer and fasting. Is this demon

  652. just worse than all the rest? I really

  653. don't think so. Amen. Jesus fended off

  654. the devil with the word of God.

  655. >> He didn't employ no supernatural

  656. methods. So, I don't believe it was a

  657. specific demon. I don't believe it was

  658. the level of the son's defilement. I

  659. don't think that it had so much to do

  660. with this son was just so far gone. He

  661. was so young and he'd been in it so

  662. long. I don't think that's what it does.

  663. You understand? It takes the same effort

  664. to save any sinner that gets saved.

  665. >> You're right.

  666. >> It takes the same blood. It takes the

  667. same sacrifice. It takes the same

  668. effort. It's by grace through faith. And

  669. every sinner, young or old, rich or

  670. poor, bad or good, has to GET SAVED THE

  671. SAME WAY. AMEN.

  672. >> So I don't believe it was the level of

  673. the son's defilement. I don't believe

  674. his specific demon. But I really believe

  675. in the text when Jesus points out it

  676. goes back to what I dealt with first in

  677. the text. I think it goes back to the

  678. lack of their spiritual devotion.

  679. And you know what I believe tonight? I

  680. believe what the great preacher said

  681. days gone by. He said this. Every

  682. failure is a prayer failure.

  683. Every failure in your life, every

  684. failure in my life,

  685. >> every time we fall, every time we

  686. stumble, every preacher, every teacher,

  687. every husband, every wife that falls

  688. into sin, you know why they do that?

  689. Because they failed in prayer.

  690. >> Now notice this in the text. What does

  691. Jesus say to them? He said unto them,

  692. "This kind can come forth by nothing but

  693. by prayer and fasting." Now is that is

  694. that question is that personal to them?

  695. I think when we step back and look at

  696. this as a whole, I think there's an

  697. application we need to understand. The

  698. clarity that Jesus give number one is

  699. based upon their devotion. Look what he

  700. says. This kind can come forth by

  701. nothing but by prayer and fasting. Now

  702. what is prayer and fasting? Prayer is

  703. communication with God.

  704. >> And fasting is loosing things from your

  705. flesh so that you can communicate with

  706. God. So what is that telling us? Jesus

  707. is basically saying this. This is only a

  708. problem God could solve.

  709. >> Right?

  710. >> Basically what I believe is Jesus had

  711. given his disciples this power to cast

  712. out demons. But you know what? They'd

  713. become prideful in that.

  714. >> You're right.

  715. >> They'd done it so many times. They'd

  716. seen God bless. They'd seen God help.

  717. Jesus had to let them fall flat on their

  718. face one time so they could realize it

  719. ain't got nothing to do with them.

  720. >> You're right. You know what will happen

  721. to you? You'll sing the same song 25

  722. times. Amen. And you'll do it good every

  723. single time. But if you get lifted up in

  724. pride, God will let you get up, forget

  725. the words, forget how to play it, forget

  726. how to do all of that just to keep you

  727. humble.

  728. >> I can preach a sermon 10 times and God

  729. bless it all 10 times I preach. But you

  730. know what? If I get confident in my

  731. ability and not his anointing, Amen. You

  732. know what he'll do? He'll let me get up

  733. here and stumble all over myself because

  734. the desire is founded upon my pride and

  735. not the furtherance of the gospel. You

  736. see these disciples in the text, they

  737. couldn't cast them out because maybe

  738. they were too busy strutting around

  739. sticking their chest out.

  740. >> That's right.

  741. >> Amen.

  742. >> You know what it did? It cut them down

  743. the sides.

  744. >> Amen.

  745. >> You say, "Preacher, what does that have

  746. to do with intercessory prayer?" You

  747. know what the number one Listen to me.

  748. You know what the number one reason why

  749. people do not intercede for others is?

  750. It's pride.

  751. >> It's pride. You say, "How is that,

  752. preacher?" Well, let me just say this.

  753. Okay. You think because everything's all

  754. right in your life that God will just

  755. bless them just because you're all

  756. right.

  757. >> You said, "Preacher, I don't really

  758. think that, but you do it."

  759. >> Come on.

  760. >> Isn't that interesting? Why is it that

  761. we can go days and not pray for people?

  762. >> You're right.

  763. >> Well, everything's okay in my life. You

  764. know what that is? That's pride.

  765. >> That's selfishness. And Jesus says to

  766. them in the text, look what the Bible

  767. said. This kind can come forth by

  768. nothing but by prayer and fasting. It

  769. has to do with our devotion. Let me ask

  770. you, how's your devotional life?

  771. >> Come on.

  772. >> I'll be be fair with you tonight. Mine

  773. needs growth.

  774. >> You know what? If you're honest, yours

  775. does, too.

  776. >> Amen. It needs growth. It needs work.

  777. But I noticed this. This devotion life

  778. comes by one thing. And I feel like all

  779. my messages are so redundant. But I just

  780. believe that's because it's the Bible.

  781. Amen.

  782. >> Amen.

  783. >> You know what it comes back to? Comes

  784. back to a decision.

  785. Notice the text. He said, "This kind can

  786. come forward by nothing but by prayer

  787. and fasting." You know what prayer and

  788. fasting require?

  789. A choice,

  790. >> right?

  791. >> A choice for you to find a place where

  792. you can talk to God.

  793. >> You're right.

  794. >> And a choice for you to refrain from

  795. things that would hinder you from

  796. talking to God.

  797. >> And I'll say this tonight, and I've

  798. already pointed it out. When Jesus said

  799. it can come forth by nothing by nothing

  800. but by prayer and fasting, it has to do

  801. with our devotion to the Lord. It has to

  802. do with our decision to turn to the

  803. Lord. But it ultimately has to do with

  804. the fact that he is the only one that

  805. can do it.

  806. >> You're right.

  807. >> You see, here's the thing about it.

  808. There's some things in our life that

  809. we're not going to be able to fix.

  810. Matter of fact, most things in our life

  811. we're not going to be able to fix.

  812. >> But there's also things in your life

  813. that God could fix.

  814. >> That's right. But it's not his will for

  815. you to know whether he wants to fix it

  816. or not.

  817. >> You're right.

  818. >> And you know what? That's the hardest

  819. thing for us to come to grips with.

  820. >> Amen.

  821. >> The unbelief of that man when he was

  822. concerned about his son. You know what

  823. his unbelief was? Whether or not it

  824. would really happen.

  825. >> You're right.

  826. >> And here's what it comes down to in our

  827. life. All right. Intercessory prayer is

  828. going to come back to this one truth.

  829. It's it's us deciding to be devoted

  830. to the Lord regardless of the outcome.

  831. >> You're right.

  832. >> That's good.

  833. >> As long as you have an effect in mind,

  834. as long as you have an outcome in mind,

  835. as long as you have some preset method,

  836. preset ending to the problem, the

  837. situation in your life, you will never

  838. intercede for somebody else.

  839. >> You're right.

  840. >> True intercession sounds like this.

  841. Lord, I don't know what you can. I don't

  842. know what you're going to do in this

  843. situation, but I know whatever needs to

  844. be done, you can do it, and you will do

  845. it in your time if you want to.

  846. >> Right?

  847. >> But Lord, here's what I'm going to trust

  848. in. Not the situation,

  849. not even your ability, but I'm going to

  850. trust in the fact that you know best,

  851. >> right?

  852. >> And that at the end of the day, the

  853. choice is up to you, but I'm going to do

  854. what I can. You're

  855. >> right.

  856. >> And you know what you can do? You can go

  857. to God each and every day

  858. >> and say, "Lord, I don't know what they

  859. need,

  860. >> but Lord, you do."

  861. >> And Lord, the outcome is up to you.

  862. Whatever you want for them,

  863. >> I want you to get the most glory.

  864. >> And you know what you'll find is when

  865. you pray that way for somebody else,

  866. you'll start living that way yourself.

  867. >> Right?

  868. >> You'll do things that you never did

  869. before. Let me say this. You'll have a

  870. hard time talking about people that

  871. you're interceding for.

  872. >> That's right. You'll have a hard time

  873. getting in disgruntled arguments with

  874. people that you're praying for. You're

  875. going to have a hard time fussing and

  876. fighting with people that you are

  877. interceding for on their behalf. And you

  878. know what it comes back to? It comes

  879. back to a decision to be devoted.

  880. >> And you know what happened in this text?

  881. This father made a decision and God

  882. blessed it. And the disciples, they

  883. didn't even get to see that personally.

  884. This father prayed for his son. God

  885. answered his prayer in one moment. You

  886. know what? I don't know what those

  887. disciples did, but I'm going to say they

  888. probably said something.

  889. >> You're right.

  890. >> But you know what is we can pray. We can

  891. pray. We can spend days, weeks, and

  892. hours in prayer, but if a motive's

  893. wrong,

  894. >> you're right.

  895. >> If if if we go about it with an idea

  896. that we're going to get some kind of

  897. glory out of it.

  898. >> Come on, preacher.

  899. >> You might as well just mark her down.

  900. God's not going to operate in that

  901. reality.

  902. >> You're right.

  903. >> Why?

  904. >> He don't work to suit your fancy.

  905. >> You're right.

  906. >> He don't work to suit my fancy. Amen.

  907. >> And you got to live your life in such a

  908. way that says, "Lord, I'll do whatever

  909. you ask."

  910. >> You say, "Peach, I got people in my life

  911. that I'm trying to intercede for, but

  912. what I'm finding about them is is when I

  913. pray for them, God's showing me things."

  914. Well, you just keep praying for them.

  915. You keep letting God show you things,

  916. and one of these days, he'll get

  917. everything out of you so you really can

  918. pray for them. That's

  919. >> right. Come on.

  920. >> You start praying for other people that

  921. God would help them stay humble. You

  922. know what? You might find you might need

  923. a good dose of humility yourself. Amen.

  924. You start praying for other people that

  925. they be pure and they dress right and

  926. act right and live right. What you'll

  927. find is that God will show up in your

  928. life and say and put your put his finger

  929. on some things in your heart that's not

  930. exactly right. I'M SAYING FRIEND THAT'S

  931. THE WAY IT WORKS. WHEN WE INTERCEDE FOR

  932. OTHERS, GOD THE FATHER, HIS SON is

  933. interceding for us and the HOLY GHOST OF

  934. GOD WILL SPEAK TO OUR heart even about

  935. things in our own life.

  936. >> That's right. But here's what we do. A

  937. lot of times we say, "I I don't know

  938. about that.

  939. I I I'm not like that."

  940. >> We'll pray for it because we see it in

  941. them.

  942. >> Come on.

  943. >> It's like Jesus said, we we want to deal

  944. with the moat that's in our brother's

  945. eye.

  946. >> Yeah.

  947. >> When we're trying to look around the

  948. beam,

  949. >> we want to deal with the thorn that

  950. they've got in their eye when we've got

  951. a 2 by six.

  952. You know, I think if we had a revival of

  953. oldtime repentance,

  954. >> forgiveness, repentance, and just church

  955. people getting right with one another.

  956. That's

  957. >> right.

  958. >> It ain't no telling.

  959. >> You're right.

  960. >> What God will do.

  961. >> There's no telling. You say, "What does

  962. it start with?" It starts with

  963. intercessory prayer.

  964. You're not going to be able to pray for

  965. somebody that you ain't forgiven.

  966. >> You're right. This is super practical

  967. and super simple and I feel really

  968. stupid for saying all of it, but the

  969. truth is it's what we need more than

  970. anything else. It's what I need and it's

  971. what you need. And if we'll live it out,

  972. God would do there's no telling what.

  973. >> You're right.

  974. >> If you've not forgiven somebody, you'll

  975. find yourself not being able to pray for

  976. them.

  977. >> You're right.

  978. >> If you're bitter at somebody, you'll

  979. find yourself not being able to pray for

  980. them. And God will say, "Look, you going

  981. to have to fix that.

  982. >> You have to fix that. You may think your

  983. devotion life's all right. go to spend a

  984. little more time in and what you might

  985. find is it needs some work.

  986. >> Right.

  987. >> I'll be the first to say tonight, oh me,

  988. we need it.

  989. >> You're right.

  990. >> God, help us. Father, every head bowed

  991. and every eye closed tonight, Lord, as

  992. we come to you tonight, I pray, God,

  993. that you would help us. Lord, I realize,

  994. Father, this is a place that all of us

  995. fail.

  996. But God, I see that this man

  997. when he got to a desperate place,

  998. his only hope was you.

  999. And Lord, I'm thankful, Father, that

1000. when his only hope was you, you were

1001. there to help him. And God, I thank you

1002. tonight, Lord, that we can trust you.

1003. We can have confidence in who you are,

1004. Lord, because you'll always do right.

1005. But God, I pray, Father, you'd forgive

  1006. me tonight.

1007. Lord, cleanse me, Lord, of the times

1008. that I have failed to pray for others,

1009. Lord, for the days, God, that you've

1010. impressed my heart, Lord, and because of

1011. busyness, Lord, I've failed to get to

1012. that prayer place and intercede on their

  1013. behalf.

1014. Lord, because of, Lord, many times my

1015. own selfishness, Father, we miss the

1016. mark. Lord, I've asked you to cleanse me

1017. of that today. I ask you to cleanse me

1018. again. But God, would you help us to get

1019. in a mindset in these days, Lord, to

  1020. pray for each other,

1021. God? I don't want to see anybody else

1022. get picked off by the devil. I don't

1023. want to see anybody else, Father, fall

1024. by the wayside. I don't want to see

1025. anybody else get out because of

1026. decisions of their flesh and the enemy

1027. influencing them. God, would you help us

1028. to intercede for each other? Lord, would

1029. you help me as the pastor to pray more

1030. than I've ever prayed before, Lord, for

1031. this church, for these families? And

1032. God, for those that are lost as they

1033. come through those doors, God, I pray

1034. that you would deal with their heart in

1035. such a way, God, that they're not able

1036. to leave. Lord, I realize, Father, Lord,

1037. that many of them, Lord, they don't come

1038. back, Father, because the conviction is

1039. so strong. But Lord, I pray, Father,

1040. somehow someway, Father, that when they

1041. are here, God, that you would help us,

1042. Lord, to be who we're supposed to be

1043. always. God, I realize at best we're

1044. going to fail and stumble, Lord, but we

1045. can do better, Father, tomorrow than we

1046. did today. And Lord, would you help us

1047. to be who you've called us to be?

  1048. These are praying tonight.

1049. I tell you what, I know without a shadow

  1050. of a doubt,

1051. that if we all prayed the way that we

  1052. should,

1053. if we prayed the way that we should, as

  1054. much as we should,

1055. I know what would happen.

1056. I don't know how much, but I know what

  1057. would happen.

1058. It ain't necessarily a full church, but

1059. I know when we come through those doors,

1060. I tell you, the glory of God will be

1061. dripping off of our face,

1062. the presence of God would be on

1063. on our complexion and in our eyes.

1064. You say, "Preacher, I just don't know

1065. how I can have that." Well, you just

  1066. keep praying.

1067. You get on your knees and you pray until

1068. the Lord's cleansed you all out. And you

1069. know what you do? You get up and you do

1070. it again the next day.

1071. You pray until the Lord's cleansed you

1072. out and then you pray for others. And

1073. then sometimes while you're praying for

1074. others, God brings you back to yourself

1075. and you ask for some more cleansing and

1076. then you start praying for others. You

  1077. say, "Preacher, that's a cycle." You're

  1078. exactly right. It is.

  1079. If you want life,

1080. hey Dad, if you want life for your

1081. children, life for your wife,

  1082. you'll pray for them.

1083. You'll not just live it in front of

1084. them, but you'll pray for them.

1085. You'll intercede on their behalf

  1086. because there's some things you're not

1087. going to be able to protect them from.

1088. But God can protect them from all

1089. things. Because all things are possible

1090. if you can believe. And I tell you,

1091. I can tell you how much you believe by

  1092. how much you pray.

1093. You know, I think that's my failure.

1094. Many times we have a lack of faith. You

  1095. know where it's manifested? It's

1096. manifested in a lack of prayer.

1097. God, help us to pray.

1098. Be a praying people more than we've ever

  1099. been.

  1100. Lord, once again,

1101. thank you for the opportunity to come to

  1102. you in prayer.

1103. And Lord, I believe the power of

1104. intercessory prayer is still present in

  1105. this day and time.

1106. Lord, we say lots of things. Lord, we

1107. say God that, you know, people say that,

1108. you know, you're just not working like

1109. you used to. Father, I really believe

1110. it's your people are not praying like

1111. they used to. God, would you help us to

1112. have a revival of prayer? Help me to

1113. have a revival of prayer.

1114. God, I need this message, Lord. Would

1115. you help me, Lord, because there's

1116. people in my life, Father, that I know

1117. they're just like that young man.

1118. And Lord, I don't want to be your

1119. disciple standing around asking why.

1120. Lord, I want to be asking why that when

1121. I preach, people don't get saved. Lord,

1122. God forbid there ever be a time in my

1123. life where my life hinders people from

1124. getting saved. God, would you please

  1125. never allow that?

1126. And Lord, I pray, Father, for the others

1127. in this church. Lord, may we all

1128. realize, Father, that our life affects

1129. those around us and it affects the

1130. services in this church. God, help us to

1131. stay clean and stay close to you. Lord,

1132. I love you and thank you for loving me.

1133. Thank you for this church. Pray you

1134. bless us and help us in the days ahead.

1135. We give you thanks for what you do

1136. because we ask it in Jesus name. Amen.
