  9. Now, let's join Pastor Charlie [music]

  10. Branch

  11. with a word from God.

  12. >> I appreciate you tonight. We find you

  13. blessed if you would stand on the

  14. reverence of the reading of God's word,

  15. 1 Kings chapter 20.

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  16. 1 Kings chapter number 20. I need to

  17. read about 20 verses tonight, but just

  18. to save some time, we'll look in the

  19. last part of the chapter this evening

  20. and I'll give you the thought and then

  21. we'll go home. Amen. And at least the

  22. choir won't. We're going to have choir

  23. practice. Amen. But

  24. anyway, this text tonight, I was

  25. thinking today

  26. studying this afternoon, looking over

  27. some things for tonight and I like

  28. preaching this way and the reason I like

  29. preaching this way is cuz it gets me out

  30. of

  31. accusations that I'm preaching at

  32. people. Amen. And you say, "What do you

  33. mean?" Well, I don't choose the message.

  34. I just preach where he puts me. Amen.

  35. And wherever he puts me, I stay there as

  36. long as he keeps me there and I enjoy it

  37. and he always gives me something. Man,

  38. I'm telling you, I hear people all the

  39. time, "Man, I read my Bible and I just

  40. don't never seem to get nothing." Well,

  41. you just ain't looking hard enough. And

  42. I think a lot of us many times we just

  43. quit they say and the day of

  44. convenience, this microwave generation

  45. that we live in, if it don't just

  46. automatically happen in about 30 seconds

  47. or less, we just lose intention and lose

  48. interest. But I'm going to tell you

  49. this, you're going to get something out

  50. of this book, you're going to stay with

  51. it. Amen. And I appreciate the Lord

  52. speaking to us and I appreciate his

  53. blessings. 1 Kings chapter 20 and let's

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  54. read in verse number 41.

  55. For sake of time, we'll look back back

  56. all the way to about verse number 32

  57. this evening but notice what your Bible

  58. said there in verse 41.

  59. And he hastened and took the ashes away

  60. from his face. The king of Israel

  61. discerned him that he was one of the

  62. prophets that he was of the prophets.

  63. And he said unto him, "Thus saith the

  64. Lord, because thou has let go out of thy

  65. hand a man whom I appointed to utter

  66. destruction, therefore thy life shall go

  67. for his life

  68. and thy people for his people." And the

  69. king of Israel went to his house heavy

  70. and displeased and came to Samaria. Look

  71. back with me in the chapter and you say,

  72. "Preacher, what is the context of this?"

  73. Well, I'll give you this verse here and

  74. then we will

  75. give you the thought tonight. Verse

  76. number 34,

  77. Ben-hadad said unto him, that is King

  78. Ahab, "The cities which my father took

  79. from thy father I will restore. Thou

  80. shalt make streets for thee in Damascus

  81. as my father made in Samaria."

  82. Then said Ahab, "I will send thee away

  83. with this covenant." So he made a

  84. covenant with him

  85. and sent him away.

  86. Now we read those first verses and you

  87. are seeing the fruit that has taken

  88. place from this folly in verse 34. And I

  89. want to preach for just a little while

  90. tonight if the Lord will help me on the

  91. cost of covenanting with the world.

  92. The cost of a covenant with the world.

  93. Now I was thinking today, you can be

  94. seated this evening we'll pray in a

  95. minute. I was thinking today actually

  96. just while I was sitting over there.

  97. Today my mind often drifts to the music

  98. industry for this reason. I think that

  99. it is the most manifest place in the

  100. world, probably that and Hollywood, that

  101. represents this truth well and you say,

  102. "What do you mean?" Well, when you think

  103. about what fills up Hollywood and what

  104. fills up the music industry, whether it

  105. be country music or rock music or pop

  106. music, just about every one of those

  107. people that's been sex successful has

  108. made a covenant with a devil.

  109. They've sold their soul.

  110. You say, "What do you mean?" Well, you

  111. you don't have to look too very far to

  112. find that.

  113. And it looks like they're doing all

  114. right on this side.

  115. But I'll tell you this, the the whole

  116. story has not been written yet.

  117. And I want to tell you where it's

  118. headed, it's headed to a place of

  119. destruction. Amen.

  120. And I want to give you some principles

  121. out of these this text here about how

  122. you get there, what happens when you get

  123. there, and how you going to end up.

  124. Amen. And now you say, "Preacher, what

  125. would that have to do with us tonight?"

  126. Well, I don't know where you might be 20

  127. years from now, but God does. Amen. And

  128. so I hope there's nobody here made a

  129. covenant with the world. Amen. Or sold

  130. their soul. Amen. But I'll tell you

  131. this, I've I've heard stories in days

  132. gone by of men, young men, young ladies

  133. that sit in Baptist churches and have

  134. sold their life away. And they walked

  135. out the doors only to make it a few

  136. steps from the church and drop dead. I

  137. want to say this, that God then is still

  138. the same God now. Amen. And this thing's

  139. serious. All right, it's serious

  140. tonight. And so let's pray and let's God

  141. to help us. Father, thank you God

  142. tonight for the word of God. Thank you

  143. for the privilege that we have to

  144. proclaim the truth. And God I ask you

  145. tonight that you would give us liberty

  146. and vocabulary tonight as we preach. I

  147. pray you'd hide us behind the cross.

  148. Remove uh Lord every sinful thought,

  149. Lord every fleshly uh idea tonight. And

  150. God I pray that you would fill us with

  151. our spirit, cleanse us of all sin and

  152. self. Fill us with the spirit of God.

  153. Anoint us tonight, we pray. God I pray

  154. Lord for whatever needs are present or

  155. missed tonight, you'd get glory and

  156. honor unto yourself. Thank you for

  157. loving us. Thank you God that you are

  158. God on the valley, the God in the valley

  159. just as you are God on the mountain. And

  160. Lord I know that you can help us Lord to

  161. keep ourselves unspotted from this

  162. world. God I ask you to help us tonight.

  163. Use us for your glory. What you do,

  164. we'll thank you. We love you. We ask it

  165. all in Jesus name. For his sake we pray.

  166. Amen and amen. This morning we left off

  167. in verse number 20 when the uh the

  168. Israel Israelites here in the text had

  169. pitched over against the Syrians in the

  170. text, and they work a great victory in

  171. verse 29 and 30. 127,000

  172. Syrians die in the text. Ben-Hadad flees

  173. in verse number 30. And you notice in

  174. verse 31, I got an introduction tonight,

  175. so I need you to stay with me and we'll

  176. get to the message tonight. You notice

  177. that Ben-Hadad, as he has made it into

  178. the city, his servants have come unto

  179. him in verse number 31, and they begin

  180. to tell him their plan. Now, I want to

  181. say this tonight, these are the same

  182. servants that told him in verse number

  183. 23 that their gods are gods of the

  184. hills. Therefore, they were stronger

  185. than we, but let us fight against them

  186. in the plain, and surely we shall be

  187. stronger than they. And so, what's

  188. happened is him listening to his

  189. servants has caused him 130,000

  190. of his men. Let me say this, if it don't

  191. work one time, amen, it would be insane

  192. to try it again a second time. But what

  193. happens here in the text is they're

  194. going to try it again. And so, their

  195. plan comes together in verse 31. Look

  196. what your Bible says. "Behold now, we

  197. have heard that the kings of the house

  198. of Israel merciful kings. Let us, I pray

  199. thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and

  200. ropes upon our heads, and go out to the

  201. king of Israel. Peradventure, he will

  202. save thy life." And so, they are calling

  203. upon the mercy of these kings of Israel.

  204. Now, it's a righteous thing that the

  205. nation of Israel and their kings would

  206. be known for being merciful. But I want

  207. to say this tonight, when there is a man

  208. that is unrepentant and has no desire to

  209. get right with God, there is no mercy

  210. for that man. Amen. I'm saying to you

  211. tonight, if you are in your sin and you

  212. are steeped in your sin, and having no

  213. desire to get right with God in that

  214. same, there is no mercy for you this

  215. evening. And I notice out of their plan,

  216. you see their performance in verse 32.

  217. The Bible says, "So, they girded

  218. sackcloth on their loins, and but ropes

  219. on their heads, and came to the king of

  220. Israel, and said that the thy servant

  221. Ben-Hadad saith, I pray thee, let me

  222. live." And so they come to him. Notice

  223. how they're clothed in the text. They

  224. girded sackcloth on their loins trying

  225. to create a persona of repentance. And

  226. not only that, they put ropes on their

  227. heads to display that Ahab could do with

  228. them what they will. Basically saying

  229. those ropes would signify that if Ahab

  230. so chose, these servants would allow him

  231. to hang them for their coming unto him

  232. in the text. And you know what they're

  233. doing? They're putting on a front of

  234. repentance. They're putting on a front

  235. wanting to say that they're going to get

  236. right with this king, but we know the

  237. truth behind the matter. They are

  238. praying upon the mercy of this man. And

  239. we notice that out of their performance,

  240. you see that his predilection, that is

  241. King Ahab, in verse number 32, look what

  242. the Bible said. And he said, "Is he yet

  243. alive?" Notice it again, "He is my

  244. brother." So, in the text, Ahab is

  245. deceived by them. And I want to say this

  246. this morning, we noted in Sunday school

  247. that Ahab was a weak man. And it is

  248. further illustrated to us in verse

  249. number 32 that Ahab is a weak man. He's

  250. not thinking about conflict. He's not

  251. thinking about retribution. When in

  252. reality, he should have killed every one

  253. of these servants and went and got

  254. Ben-Hadad and killed him as well. But

  255. you see in the text his predilection is

  256. that he's decided, "All right, I'm going

  257. to love this man because he's royalty

  258. like me."

  259. Now, here's what you say, "Preacher,

  260. what does that have to do?" Well, here's

  261. what happens in our lives. We find

  262. somebody that's got a hobby that we

  263. share or or got a friend that we share

  264. or something that we like and

  265. automatically we yoke up with them and

  266. we hook up with them and we've got a

  267. mindset about them. But what you'll find

  268. after a while is that thing turns back.

  269. Amen. And the Syrians, you say,

  270. "Preacher, how is it?" Well, they'd done

  271. tried to take Ahab out. But all it takes

  272. is one little claim in the text and Ahab

  273. is right back in the position he was in

  274. in the beginning. Let me say this to you

  275. here in the text. You'll find later on

  276. in the book of Kings that Ben-Hadad

  277. comes back again. What I'm saying is as

  278. he allows Ben-Hadad to get an advantage

  279. over him in this text. Notice not only

  280. the predilection of Ahab, but consider

  281. the perception of these servants in

  282. verse 33. Now the men did diligently

  283. observe whether anything would come from

  284. him, and did hastily catch it. And they

  285. said, "My brother Ben-Hadad." Then he

  286. said, "Go ye and bring him." So what

  287. this simply means in verse 33 is that

  288. these servants were listening for what

  289. Ahab would say. They were wanting him to

  290. denote some kind of relationship with

  291. Ben-Hadad and pray that they would be

  292. casting themselves upon the mercy of

  293. this man, and there is a law in these

  294. oriental countries that you can read

  295. about. I'm not got time to preach it

  296. tonight, but if there was any mercy that

  297. was shown from the king that would be on

  298. this side of the fight here in the text,

  299. that they would take that and they would

  300. run with that, and it would be a

  301. covenant. If this king did not

  302. immediately denounce them, they would

  303. take that and accept that as they are

  304. forgiven. And you notice what happens in

  305. the text. They perceive there in the

  306. verse number 33, they said, "Thy brother

  307. Ben-Hadad." So they played off the words

  308. that Ahab said in the text, and they've

  309. already hooked in. Now here's what I

  310. want to tell you tonight about this

  311. before we go any further. You need to be

  312. careful in your conversation with this

  313. world.

  314. You need to be careful with your

  315. fellowship, with your conversation, with

  316. the way you carry yourself in this

  317. world, cuz if you're not careful, amen,

  318. you'll get yoked up with something you

  319. ain't got no business being involved in.

  320. I'm saying, friend, you give the devil

  321. an inch and he'll take a mile, amen. I'm

  322. saying here in the text, his their

  323. perception is they've got Ahab hook,

  324. line, and sinker in this text.

  325. Notice verse 34. And Ben-Hadad said unto

  326. him, "The cities which my father took

  327. from thy father I will restore.

  328. Thou shalt make streets for thee in

  329. Damascus as my father made in Samaria."

  330. Then said Ahab, "I will send thee away

  331. with this covenant. So he made a

  332. covenant with him and sent him away. So

  333. you see in verse number 34, Ben Hadad's

  334. working deceitful again. The enemy's

  335. trying to deceive him. And you think

  336. about this. He said, all right, I'll

  337. give you the cities back that we've

  338. taken. What should Ahab have done? He

  339. should have destroyed the whole crowd

  340. and took every city that Ben Hadad had.

  341. Amen. He should have utterly wiped them

  342. off the face of the map. He should have

  343. took care of them and there'd been no

  344. more remembrance of them. But I want to

  345. remind you again, we said it in Sunday

  346. school this morning, Ahab was more

  347. concerned about his perception of men

  348. than he was concerned about obeying God.

  349. And that's manifest in the fact that he

  350. did not care for his family. And you

  351. notice his perversion in verse 34, then

  352. said Ahab, I will send thee away with

  353. this covenant. So he made a covenant

  354. with him and sent him away. Let me say

  355. this to you this morning, and this ain't

  356. a part of the message, but it goes to it

  357. goes to truth just the same. Donald

  358. Trump can write up as many peace

  359. treaties as he wants to write up. That

  360. towel head rug riding crowd over there,

  361. they're not going to listen to any of

  362. that, okay? It don't matter what they

  363. sign that pen on their paper, amen,

  364. don't mean absolutely nothing to them.

  365. And they would destroy us now if they

  366. could. Amen. I'm saying, friend, there's

  367. going to be people in this world, you'll

  368. go and covenant with them, you'll yoke

  369. up with them, you'll lock up with them,

  370. and what you'll find is that's what's

  371. happened to you. You've got locked up

  372. with them, amen. And what they're going

  373. to try to do is they're going to try to

  374. play upon your mercies SO THEY CAN

  375. DESTROY YOU, AMEN.

  376. You say, how is that? Well, Ben Hadad

  377. didn't care nothing for Ahab.

  378. And it shows Ahab's foolishness. Think

  379. about all that God has done for Ahab in

  380. this text. You say, what do you mean?

  381. Well, twice the Syrians have been

  382. delivered into his hand. He had the

  383. opportunity to utterly wipe them out,

  384. twice. He takes them out the first time,

  385. God gives victory, God does it all for

  386. him. He didn't have a plan, he didn't

  387. have an army put together, God just

  388. comes in and works it out and says, all

  389. right, you're going to be in charge of

  390. it." God works a great victory. Second

  391. time rolls around, the Syrians have got

  392. another plan. They all go up against the

  393. Israelites in the taste. God works it

  394. out again. Less than six 8,000 people go

  395. up against over 125,000

  396. men and utterly destroy them. God works

  397. in their favor. The king escapes and

  398. here we have Ahab whom God has WROUGHT

  399. VICTORY FOR TWICE IN THIS CHAPTER is

  400. taking care of the king.

  401. Let me ask you something tonight.

  402. Why is it that sin in your life you've

  403. got victory over over and over and over

  404. again?

  405. Why are you petting on the king of that

  406. thing?

  407. Why are you allowing that thing to

  408. continue in your life?

  409. You say, "What do you mean?" Well, Ahab

  410. wasn't trusted with so much. I like

  411. Matthew Henry said this. He said, "There

  412. are those on whose success is

  413. ill-bestowed. They know not how to serve

  414. God or their generation or even their

  415. own true interest with their

  416. prosperity." God has been blessed or

  417. Ahab has been blessed by God in this

  418. chapter. He has allowed him to have

  419. victory, but he doesn't even know what

  420. to do with it.

  421. You say, "What do you mean?" Because

  422. he's living in his sin.

  423. SOME OF YOU HAVE VICTORY EVEN TONIGHT

  424. and because of the issues that you have

  425. in your life, you can't enjoy it.

  426. Notice this, Isaiah chapter 26

    Isaiah 26 chapter mention

  427. verse number 10.

  428. Very interesting verse. Isaiah 26 verse

  429. number 10.

  430. Listen to this now. I encourage you to

  431. write this in your margin.

  432. Let favor be showed to the wicked.

  433. Yet will he not learn righteousness. In

  434. the land of uprightness will he deal

  435. unjustly and will not behold the majesty

  436. of the Lord. Listen to that again.

  437. Let favor be showed to the wicked. Yet

  438. will he not learn righteousness. In the

  439. land of uprightness will he deal

  440. unjustly and will not behold the majesty

  441. of the Lord. Ahab has been given every

  442. opportunity to get right with God. What

  443. does he do? The first thing he does when

  444. he gets out of this battle, victory's on

  445. the other side, he goes and hooks up

  446. with the man that he should have

  447. destroyed.

  448. Notice what happens in the text, all

  449. right? I got to move quickly tonight.

  450. You see out of this, verse 35, look what

  451. your Bible says. And a certain man of

  452. the sons of the prophet said unto his

  453. neighbor in the word of the Lord, "Smite

  454. me, I pray thee." And the man refused to

  455. smite him. Then said he unto him,

  456. "Because thou hast not obeyed the voice

  457. of the Lord, behold, as soon as thou art

  458. departed from me, a lion shall slay

  459. thee. And as soon as he was departed

  460. from him, a lion found him and slew

  461. him." So, after Ahab has made a covenant

  462. here in the text, there's a man in the

  463. sons of the prophets that God comes to

  464. and says, "All right, you get your

  465. neighbor to smite you." That other boy

  466. in the sons of the prophets, you get him

  467. to smite you. This young man refuses to

  468. smite him. And notice the sudden

  469. punishment in the text, verse 36.

  470. "Because thou hast not obeyed the voice

  471. of the Lord." Now, when we think about

  472. this fact tonight, doesn't that just

  473. sound crazy?

  474. That the prophet would say, "All right,

  475. you need to what? You need to knock me

  476. out."

  477. You need to take You need to smite me.

  478. And he says that, the Bible clearly says

  479. that, it's in the word of the Lord. And

  480. so, you know what? The man refuses to do

  481. it. Now, we think, man, that's a good

  482. thing. He shouldn't have done that. But

  483. you know what? It was a commandment from

  484. God.

  485. And so, what happens in the text? Well,

  486. you notice this sudden punishment. "As

  487. soon as thou art departed from me, a

  488. lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he

  489. was departed from him, a lion found him

  490. and slew him." You say, "What does that

  491. represent, preacher?" Well, it

  492. represents the disobedience of Ahab. God

  493. had given him every opportunity to do

  494. right. He's given him opportunity after

  495. opportunity in this chapter. They

  496. literally had Ben-Hadad in their

  497. clutches in this text, and they allow

  498. him to go free. And what is illustrated

  499. here by this prophet is the sudden

  500. punishment that was soon to come on him.

  501. Notice verse 37. Not only the sudden

  502. punishment, notice but notice the

  503. stricken presentation in verse 37. I

  504. know this is a running commentary

  505. tonight and some of y'all are looking at

  506. me like I'm crazy, but this is true,

  507. okay? Stay with me. I'm going somewhere.

  508. Then he found another man and said,

  509. "Smite me, I pray thee." And the man

  510. smote him, so that in smiting he wounded

  511. him. So the prophet departed and waited

  512. for the king by the way and disguised

  513. himself with ashes upon his face. So

  514. this other this other this prophet in

  515. the text, he comes to another man. He

  516. tells him to smite him in the word of

  517. the Lord. The man is obedient and he

  518. smites him in the text and so there's a

  519. wound. There's a mark that's left upon

  520. him. And so he has done this in verse

  521. number 38, it reveals that the prophet

  522. departed, waited for the king by the way

  523. as he is journeying in and disguised

  524. himself with ashes upon his face. Why

  525. did he do that? Because these sons of

  526. the prophets look different than

  527. everybody around them. And so he wanted

  528. himself to look like a soldier. Notice

  529. what happens in the text. Verse 39. And

  530. as the king passed by, he cried unto the

  531. king and he said, "My servant went out

  532. into the midst of the battle and behold

  533. a man turned aside and brought a man

  534. unto me and said, 'Keep this man. If by

  535. any means he be missing, then shall thy

  536. life then shall thy life be for his life

  537. or else shalt thou shalt thou pay a

  538. talent of silver.'" And so this prophet

  539. speaks a proverb. Now remember, he's got

  540. a mark upon his body. The battle has

  541. wounded him. He has tried to make an

  542. image of himself to the king in the

  543. text. He speaks this proverb in verse 39

  544. and verse number 40, notice the sad

  545. pronouncement. And as thy servant was

  546. busy here and there, he was gone. Listen

  547. to this now. And the king of Israel said

  548. unto him, "So shall thy judgment be."

  549. Listen to this. "Thyself hast decided."

  550. That principle right there in that verse

  551. is the principle from Genesis chapter

  552. number two

  553. all the way until the end of time.

  554. You say, "What do you mean?"

  555. Notice the verse.

  556. So shall thy judgment be.

  557. Thyself

  558. hast decided.

  559. You know what the judgment that you and

  560. I would have faced as lost sinners, you

  561. know what that judgment was? That was

  562. judgment that we decided for.

  563. It was your decision. It was your sin

  564. that put Jesus on the cross. You say,

  565. "Preacher, what do you mean?" Ahab in

  566. this text, what he's doing is or this

  567. prophet has come to Ahab and he's

  568. painted this picture

  569. of what's happened to him. And Ahab

  570. looks at him and says, "Well, you're

  571. going to die because you didn't do what

  572. you said you was going to do."

  573. But you know what the prophet was doing?

  574. He was turning around and putting it in

  575. the face of Ahab. You say, "Preacher,

  576. that sounds familiar." Well, yeah, it

  577. sounds a whole lot like David in 2

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  578. Samuel chapter 12

  579. when Nathan come to him and told him

  580. about the man that had the little lamb.

  581. Amen. That come to him and he said that

  582. traveler come, amen, and he took that

  583. little lamb from that little man, amen,

  584. and gave that lamb unto that traveling

  585. that warfare man in the text and Nathan

  586. looked at David and said, "David, thou

  587. art the man." After David had just said,

  588. "The man shall surely die and he shall

  589. restore him fourfold." And you know

  590. what? David, the Bible says God said

  591. "The sword shall never depart from thy

  592. house." Ahab in this text, by speaking

  593. to this young prophet here in these

  594. verses, has decided his own judgment.

  595. You say, "Well, what do you mean?" Well,

  596. notice it in the text, verse 41. And he

  597. hasted, that is the prophet, and took

  598. the ashes away from his face and the

  599. king of Israel discerned him that he was

  600. of the prophets. You know what that king

  601. realized when he was a man of God? He

  602. realized his judgment had already been

  603. declared. He realized that he himself

  604. had spoken his sentence. Let me say this

  605. to you tonight. If you are walking in

  606. disobedience to God, if you are walking

  607. against the clear command from the word

  608. of God, and deciding to live your own

  609. way, and covenanting this with this

  610. world. Lost or saved tonight, I'm saying

  611. if you're lost, you will die and go to

  612. hell because of your covenant with this

  613. world. But if you're saved tonight, you

  614. will have the destruction of your

  615. physical life by covenanting with this

  616. world.

  617. Say, "What does that look like?" Well,

  618. we notice sin's price in the text.

  619. The Bible said in verse 42, "And he said

  620. unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because

  621. thou hast let go out of thy hand a man

  622. whom I appointed to utter destruction.

  623. Therefore, thy life shall go for his

  624. life,

  625. and thy people for his people."

  626. Ahab in the text has decided his own

  627. consequence.

  628. You know what? We don't realize how many

  629. times we do that.

  630. Say, "What do you mean?" Well,

  631. oftentimes the sin that we are involved

  632. in the most

  633. is the sin we are quickest to call out

  634. in others.

  635. The thing that we want to condemn in

  636. everybody else,

  637. we can real easily point it out in

  638. others because it's in us.

  639. And what happens in this text is Ahab

  640. signs his own sentence.

  641. He decides his own judgment. He's made

  642. his decision. He's declared. He said

  643. just He said, "So shall my judgment be.

  644. Thyself has decided it." And just like

  645. David, Ahab has decided what his

  646. sentence will be. And sin's price in the

  647. text, the Bible says, "Therefore, thy

  648. life shall go for his life, and thy

  649. people for his people."

  650. Now, I want you to think about this with

  651. me tonight. What got Ahab to this point?

  652. This is the message tonight. This is all

  653. it is. Three things. All right, what got

  654. Ahab to this point? All right. This is

  655. what happens when you end up covenanting

  656. yourself with this world. And this is

  657. the cost. All right, it's death. That's

  658. what it is. All right, from the text.

  659. Number one, I will say this. The number

  660. one thing that led Ahab to this point is

  661. there was no consultation.

  662. Say, "What do you mean?"

  663. Not a single time in 1 Kings chapter 20,

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  664. do you see Ahab calling for a prophet?

  665. Not a single time do you see Ahab asking

  666. God, "Lord, what do I do?"

  667. The covenant that Ahab makes is a

  668. presumptuous, prideful, personal, he's

  669. only propping up himself by this

  670. covenant.

  671. If you was here in Sunday school this

  672. morning, you'll know that I said when

  673. Ahab was willing to turn his family over

  674. to Ben-Hadad, he was just doing this, he

  675. was allowing himself to fall upon them

  676. because he knew if they come and take

  677. him, he'll still get to eat with them as

  678. a king.

  679. Much like the government which we live

  680. in today.

  681. They'll sell us out to fill their own

  682. pockets up.

  683. But I notice this, there's no

  684. consultation. You say, "Preacher, what

  685. do you mean?" He never asked God for any

  686. help.

  687. You know what? We get ourselves in the

  688. middle of the mess and we ask God,

  689. "Where you at?"

  690. He says, "I've been here the whole

  691. time."

  692. You know what our problem is?

  693. In the business.

  694. You say, "What do you mean in business?"

  695. Well, notice the text, the prophet calls

  696. him out on it. Notice this. Verse number

  697. 40. The prophet's telling this story,

  698. but look what he says, "And as thy

  699. servant was what? Busy here

  700. and there."

  701. Do you know why Ahab didn't have time to

  702. call on God?

  703. Cuz he was too pre pre uh

  704. What's the word I'm looking for?

  705. He was too concerned with himself.

  706. He's too focused on him.

  707. You see, in our life, there's no time

  708. for consultation

  709. with him

  710. cuz we're too busy consulting with

  711. everything and everybody else.

  712. Ahab had his gods, Ahab had his people,

  713. Ahab had his family and his kingdom and

  714. really he felt like he was doing all

  715. right. I've got victory twice, surely

  716. God will allow me to make it out this

  717. time. I'm saying, friend, it's just like

  718. Lot, when he left Sodom and Gomorrah,

  719. God told him to get out of there and run

  720. away. And what did Lot do? He went just

  721. as close as he could stay to Sodom and

  722. turned into Zoar, that little city. He

  723. said, "Can I not flee to this little

  724. city?" He said, "It's just a little

  725. one."

  726. And what did he do there?

  727. His two daughters defiled him.

  728. In that city, destroyed his lineage,

  729. destroyed his children. He lost all his

  730. right all his children that could have

  731. had an opportunity to repent. The two

  732. that he kept, they defiled him.

  733. I'm saying, friend, what what what this

  734. represents to us is is that there was no

  735. consultation

  736. with the master.

  737. You know,

  738. you've heard it said, I've heard it

  739. said, I believe it tonight, every

  740. failure in the life of the believer is a

  741. prayer failure.

  742. Every time you misstep,

  743. every time you miss the mark is because

  744. you've not been in conversation with

  745. him.

  746. Anytime that I've gotten out of sorts

  747. with that little lady you're sitting

  748. right there in our marriage is just

  749. because I've not been consulting him.

  750. And let me say this to you, sir, this to

  751. you, ma'am, before you consult your

  752. spouse about anything, you need to talk

  753. to the Lord about it first.

  754. Cuz there's some things that you go to

  755. them with that's going to cause a lot of

  756. strife and the Lord will get it out

  757. before you get there if you'll just go

  758. to him with it.

  759. Your family will be destroyed.

  760. You say, "Preacher, what was he going to

  761. lose in this text?" Well, you think

  762. about it. He's going to lose what he

  763. wanted to keep and that was Ben-Hadad.

  764. But you know what? He's also going to

  765. lose his family that he was going to

  766. give away to Ben-Hadad.

  767. But you know what? He's not only going

  768. to lose Ben-Hadad and his family, he's

  769. going to lose his own life.

  770. You say he thought he was just going to

  771. be turned over to them.

  772. But you know what? His sin in

  773. covenanting with the world, you know

  774. what it got him?

  775. It made him lose everything.

  776. Cuz there was no consultation. Number

  777. two,

  778. there was no consultation with the

  779. sovereign. That's what got Ahab to this

  780. point in the text that he is going to be

  781. destroyed. Thy life for his life and thy

  782. people for his people. LET ME TELL you

  783. something TONIGHT, FRIEND. GOD DON'T

  784. PLAY GAMES with his children. HE DON'T

  785. PLAY GAMES WITH HIS PEOPLE, AND YOU

  786. BETTER TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.

  787. There's no consultation. Number two.

  788. There's no consultation with a

  789. sovereign. I'll say the second of all,

  790. there was no consideration for his sin.

  791. Say, what do you mean? Well, I would say

  792. first of all, Ahab didn't consider the

  793. sin of Ben-hadad.

  794. Say, preacher, what do you mean? Well,

  795. you think about the fact that he's

  796. literally just tried to destroy him

  797. twice.

  798. He's tried to take him out twice.

  799. Why would we want to house a lion that's

  800. going to eat us alive?

  801. Let me ask you something. Why do you

  802. want to protect something that's going

  803. to try to destroy you?

  804. Some of you got pets in your houses.

  805. Amen. Lester Roloff used to preach a

  806. sermon called The Mule Walked On. He

  807. talked about those pets that you got in

  808. your house. All they can't handle that

  809. kind of preaching. Amen. But, it's just

  810. true.

  811. Some of you got pets in your houses.

  812. Amen. That you keep around. What they're

  813. doing, they're eating you alive.

  814. You say, preacher, but everybody's got

  815. one.

  816. Last time I checked, everybody ain't the

  817. standard.

  818. Be good some of us learn how to live

  819. without a telephone again.

  820. Or learn how to live with one that ain't

  821. got the internet. Somebody say amen

  822. right there.

  823. Say, preacher, what do you mean? I'm

  824. saying if you can't handle it, THROW IT

  825. AWAY.

  826. IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TV, HEY,

  827. YOUNG'UNS, listen to me. You young'uns

  828. in here. If you can't handle the TV in

  829. your bedroom, throw it out. You don't

  830. need one in there anyway.

  831. I'm saying that what destroyed Ahab in

  832. this text was there WAS NO CONSIDERATION

  833. OF HOW DANGEROUS THIS MAN WAS. BEN-HADAD

  834. WANTED HIM DEAD, BUT HE NEVER STOPPED

  835. ONCE TO THINK ABOUT THAT.

  836. THERE WAS NO CONSIDERATION OF HIS

  837. SINFULNESS. HE WAS LITERALLY GOING TO

  838. DESTROY HIM AT THE FIRST CHANCE HE GOT.

  839. BUT, NOW, we're just going to He He's

  840. peaceful now.

  841. It'll be okay now.

  842. You know what you'll find? You'll walk

  843. out of here and you say, "Man, that

  844. preacher was crazy. I can handle that."

  845. But you know what? 3, 4 days down the

  846. road, you headlong into something

  847. that you wish you'd never been involved

  848. in.

  849. You say, "What does it lead to?" Well,

  850. the prophet says this way.

  851. He said, "Because I have let go out of

  852. thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter

  853. destruction, there therefore thy life

  854. shall go for his life."

  855. You'll lose it all.

  856. Notice this, I'm done tonight.

  857. There's no consultation with the

  858. sovereign. There's no consideration of

  859. sin, and that is the indictment of our

  860. generation.

  861. We don't We don't We don't weep over sin

  862. anymore.

  863. Sin don't make us bitter.

  864. Sin don't make us broken. That's the

  865. word I was looking for.

  866. Sin don't turn us away like it used to

  867. do.

  868. We don't We don't turn our nose up at it

  869. anymore, but it's just like a pet, just

  870. hangs around.

  871. You better start considering that sin.

  872. You say, "How is that?" Well, the

  873. prophet done told Ahab to consider his

  874. ways one time.

  875. Listen to this, verse 22 of chapter 20.

  876. "Go strengthen thyself and mark and see

  877. what thou doest." God's done given the

  878. warning one time.

  879. But now he's messed up and he's on the

  880. wrong side of the warning.

  881. There was no consultation. There was no

  882. consideration, but

  883. I'll say this tonight and I'll be done.

  884. Ultimately, what got Ahab was that there

  885. was no condemnation.

  886. You say, "What do you mean?"

  887. Well, there was no condemnation of

  888. Ben-hadad.

  889. You say, "What do you mean?"

  890. His crimes was enough to convict him.

  891. Are you listening to me?

  892. That thing that's got you in sin so many

  893. times,

  894. it's messed you up enough times. It's

  895. It's It's time for it to be condemned.

  896. You say, "What do you mean?" I'm saying,

  897. "If you don't condemn it, it's going to

  898. condemn you."

  899. You say, "What do you mean?" Well,

  900. notice the text. HE SAID, "THY LIFE FOR

  901. HIS LIFE."

  902. IF YOU DON'T TAKE it out, it's going to

  903. take you out.

  904. Ben-Hadad got what he wanted

  905. because of this covenant. And you know

  906. what? Ben-Hadad didn't even have to

  907. raise a finger.

  908. You think about this. They fought him

  909. twice and ain't been able to win.

  910. But you know what? Ben-Hadad got him

  911. destroyed

  912. because of this covenant.

  913. You know what? There's a lot of people

  914. that the devil destroys and he don't

  915. even have to lift a finger.

  916. You know why? Because you've destroyed

  917. yourself.

  918. Are you listening to me?

  919. Hey friend, it's serious.

  920. No condemnation. What was there no

  921. condemnation for? This sinner, you see

  922. the sin that you refuse to condemn will

  923. ultimately condemn you.

  924. Notice what happens, verse 43.

  925. You say, "Preacher, how can I tell one

  926. of these people?" And notice in verse 43

  927. and I'll tell you. And the king of

  928. Israel went to his house heavy and

  929. displeased and came to Samaria.

  930. You know the people that are under the

  931. judgment of God?

  932. You know how you tell them?

  933. When they hear a word from God,

  934. they get mad.

  935. Bible says he was heavy. That means he

  936. was angry. But then that word displeased

  937. in the text, it literally translates to

  938. the word sullen.

  939. He was quiet He was silently bitter.

  940. There's a lot of people that don't

  941. really say anything, but what they do is

  942. they walk around and they mumble under

  943. their breath

  944. the pain that they have.

  945. You say, "Preacher, how do you know

  946. that?" Well, I've been there before.

  947. We've all been there before. That sullen

  948. state that we get in.

  949. You say, "How is that?" Well, Ahab, he

  950. finds himself here again, chapter number

  951. 21. Notice this.

  952. He asked for Naboth's vineyard, verses 1

  953. verse number 2. He wants Naboth's

  954. vineyard. Naboth says, "I'm not giving

  955. you the inheritance of my fathers" in

  956. verse 4. And look what the Bible says in

  957. verse number four.

  958. And he laid him down upon his bed and

  959. turned away his face and would eat no

  960. bread. But Jezebel his wife came to him

  961. and said unto him, "Why is thy spirit so

  962. sad that thou eatest no bread?" Notice

  963. the first part of verse four. And Ahab

  964. came into his house heavy and

  965. displeased, the same description.

  966. You say, "What is that?" Well, he'd

  967. gotten the call from God that there was

  968. judgment coming upon his house. It made

  969. him heavy and displeased. But you know

  970. what else made him heavy and displeased?

  971. When he didn't get what he wanted.

  972. People that are under the judgment of

  973. God a lot of times when they don't get

  974. what they want,

  975. they'll show the same kind of response.

  976. They get mad.

  977. You ever seen somebody like that?

  978. Always searching, always seeking for

  979. their way.

  980. You've heard the saying it's their way

  981. or the highway.

  982. This is the way Ahab operated his life.

  983. And isn't it funny that he funny that he

  984. was merciless with his own people?

  985. He killed Naboth in chapter 21. But the

  986. man who tried to take his life,

  987. he keeps him for himself

  988. as a buddy.

  989. You see, this is the vanity of somebody

  990. who makes a covenant with the world. The

  991. people that really love them, they want

  992. nothing to do with them.

  993. The people of God, they want nothing to

  994. do with them. They want what the people

  995. of God had, but they don't want to do

  996. the work the people of God have to do to

  997. get it and keep it.

  998. So you know what they do? They yoke up

  999. with the world.

1000. The world that wants to destroy them,

1001. the world that wants to defile them, and

1002. the world that would care could care

1003. less what happens to them.

1004. Those are the people they yoke up with.

1005. Why? Because their God is themselves.

1006. And you know the reason why people that

  1007. come into this church

1008. can't hook up with us?

1009. They can't get along with the preaching,

1010. they can't get along with the word of

1011. God. This is what happens.

1012. Ultimately, their religion is self.

1013. That's right. And you know what somebody

1014. whose God is himself, they'll never hook

1015. up with anybody who's God is the Lord.

  1016. >> That's right.

1017. >> You won't be able to have fellowship

1018. with those people that love God cuz you

  1019. won't understand us.

1020. And you know what? Something I've said a

  1021. lot here lately. I don't understand

  1022. them.

1023. Say preacher, what do you mean? You know

1024. what it is for yourself to be God in

1025. your life? Of course I do. But man,

1026. that's the most miserable life anybody

1027. could ever live. I lived that way as a

1028. young man. My flesh and my self was my

1029. God and I want to tell YOU THIS TONIGHT.

1030. THERE IS NO SATISFACTION IN THAT.

  1031. THERE'S NO PLEASURE in that. It's

1032. nothing but misery and wretchedness. I'M

  1033. SAYING FRIEND, I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY

1034. ANYBODY WOULD WANT TO FOLLOW AND WORSHIP

1035. THEMSELVES AND HONOR AND GLORIFY

1036. THEMSELVES. WHEN WE GLORIFY AND HONOR

1037. HIM, HEY FRIEND, HE LIFTS THE

  1038. CONDEMNATION. OH FRIEND, THERE'S

1039. FORGIVENESS AND MERCY IN HIS HAND and

1040. aren't you thankful THAT WHEN WE DO

  1041. WRONG, THERE'S A GREAT THERE'S GRACE

1042. THAT MEETS US RIGHT WHERE WE ARE AND

1043. HE'LL cleanse us from our sin.

1044. And do it every time. You know what the

1045. problem with worshipping self? It'll

  1046. never cleanse you.

  1047. You'll never be free.

1048. Never enjoy the blessings of God.

1049. And the cost of a covenant with the

  1050. world

  1051. is still death.

1052. You say preacher, what do you mean?

1053. Well, to put the whole summary the whole

1054. sermon in summary in short, Paul said it

  1055. this way.

  1056. For the wages

  1057. of sin

  1058. is death.

1059. That's not just for those who are lost.

1060. There's been a lot of saved people went

  1061. to an early grave

1062. cuz they couldn't turn loose.

1063. Every head bowed and every eye closed

  1064. tonight,

1065. I want to ask you tonight,

  1066. I don't know where you're at but

1067. what kind of covenant have you made?

1068. Say what do you mean? Well,

  1069. there's plenty of

1070. avenues and areas of life where

  1071. if we're not careful,

1072. we'll slip up and end up yoked up with

  1073. the world.

1074. You'll end up hooked up with people that

1075. would love to destroy you.

1076. Those of you that's been in the

1077. corporate work world, you know that

1078. most people, their desire, their only

1079. desire is another rung on the ladder.

1080. And if they have to step on your head to

1081. get there, it's not going to bother

  1082. them.

  1083. Yeah, they'll go and they'll they'll

1084. drink and party with you after work.

1085. They'll fellowship with you, but the

1086. first time they get an opportunity to

1087. get past you, they going to push you

  1088. away push you away.

1089. I want to say this, won't you yoke up

  1090. with the church?

1091. Won't you get right with God?

1092. You see, Ahab had the people of God

1093. before him, and if he could if he would

1094. have done right with done right before

1095. God, God had already blessed him, but

1096. I'm reminded of what Matthew Henry

  1097. sayeth.

1098. He said, "Some people, they are given

  1099. the most prosperous life."

1100. He said, "But yet they don't know how to

  1101. honor God with it.

1102. They don't know how to take care of the

1103. generation around them, and they do not

1104. know how to even supply their own

  1105. interest."

1106. You see, the thing is, even in Ahab's

1107. own interest, why would he keep

  1108. Ben-Hadad safe?

1109. Cuz Ben-Hadad wanted him dead.

1110. You see, it's not even reasonable for

1111. him to keep him around. Listen to me,

  1112. young'un.

1113. That friend you've got that causes you

  1114. nothing but trouble,

1115. why do you even keep them around?

1116. Why do you keep those people around?

  1117. They're not benefiting you.

1118. You need to give those people up. You

1119. say, "Preacher, but it's the only friend

  1120. I have." No, it's not.

1121. I can tell you two people right now

  1122. that's your friend.

1123. You say, "Who's that?" Well, I promise

1124. you the Lord Jesus Christ is.

1125. And I can tell you this preacher loves

  1126. you.

1127. I want to tell you tonight you don't

1128. have to live that way

1129. cuz the cost of a covenant with this

  1130. world is too high.

  1131. Young lady,

1132. that young man you're seeing, he's not

1133. causing you anything but trouble.

1134. Young man, that young lady you're

1135. seeing, she's not causing you anything

1136. but trouble. You're doing things that

1137. you would never otherwise done.

1138. Why would you stay up with that?

1139. You say, "Preacher, but I love them."

1140. Here's the thing about that.

1141. There's a lot of difference between love

  1142. and lust.

1143. I'm going to tell you this tonight.

1144. If your relationship with that young

1145. lady or that young man doesn't bring you

1146. closer to God, but if it brings you away

1147. from God, it's not right.

1148. If it keeps you from church, it's not

  1149. right.

1150. If it keeps you from loving your family

1151. and listening to your mom and daddy,

1152. if you have to question what you're

1153. doing, you probably shouldn't be doing

  1154. it.

1155. Hey, that's for us older people as well.

  1156. That job you've got,

1157. that hobby you have, those friends you

  1158. hang out with,

1159. you say, "Preacher, I've not made a

  1160. covenant with them."

1161. Why don't you ask them?

  1162. You see,

1163. Ben-Hadad had it all worked out.

1164. He had it all written down. You know

1165. what they have all he had to do is sign

  1166. his name to it.

1167. And let me tell you, child of God, every

1168. one of you in here, from the youngest to

1169. the oldest, from the and the wisest to

1170. the one that don't have much knowledge,

1171. let me say this to you, it doesn't

  1172. matter where you're at. There's somebody

1173. that's waiting to get in an agreement

1174. with you to destroy you.

1175. Father, I pray in Jesus' name tonight.

1176. Lord, I don't know what situations are

  1177. here,

1178. but God, I know how dangerous

  1179. this world is.

1180. And God, it amazes me that a man that

1181. you'd given so much means, or that you'd

1182. given so much blessing to, you allowed

1183. him to see so much victory,

1184. yet he still wanted to harbor sin in his

1185. life. And Lord, you destroyed him for

  1186. it.

1187. And God, I pray you'd help us remember,

1188. Lord, that if we harbor things in our

1189. heart and our life, God, that you will

  1190. judge us for that.

1191. And Lord, I'm reminded of what your word

1192. tells us that you're keeping a record of

  1193. the lost.

1194. But Lord, you're also keeping a record

1195. of the saved. And you told us in your

1196. word that we'll be judged when we stand

1197. before you in the book of Corinthians

1198. for those things done in the body,

1199. whether they be good or bad. And there's

1200. a record, Lord, and if we fail,

  1201. God, you know it.

1202. And Lord, we'll be judged for that one

1203. of these days. I'm thankful that you

1204. forgive us and you have mercy on us.

1205. But Lord, I know this this morning, this

1206. evening, God, that you know that record,

1207. Lord, and we'll stand before you and

1208. have to give account of that.

1209. Lord, help us to draw near to you.

1210. Lord, I pray, God, you would cleanse us

1211. of all sin and self tonight. And help

  1212. us, Lord, I pray.

1213. In this time of invitation for just a

1214. moment, she's going to play just a

  1215. verse.

1216. Somebody may need to come tonight.

1217. Let me ask you this.

1218. Say, "Preacher, I'm going back to

1219. school. Would you pray for me that

1220. God would give me strength not to lock

1221. up with the wrong people?"

1222. Not to yoke up with the wrong people.

1223. There may be a young person in here say,

1224. "Preacher, would you pray for me that

1225. God [music] will protect me?

  1226. God will help me

1227. from getting around the wrong

1228. influences." Yes, God bless you, son.

1229. Amen. Any of you other young people in

1230. here tonight, you say, "Preacher, would

1231. you pray [music] for me that God will

1232. help me?" God bless you, young lady.

1233. Amen. I tell you, he's able tonight.

1234. He is able to help you.

1235. I tell you this, he'll be your strength.

1236. The world may [music] hate you,

1237. but Jesus said, "Marvel not that the

1238. world hates you." He said, "Know that it

1239. hated me before it hated you." I want to

1240. say this, he [music] loves you tonight.

1241. And he will help you. Amen. And this

1242. preacher's praying for you. [music] This

1243. preacher loves you. And if you need any

1244. help, I don't care what time of day or

1245. night, you call me and I'll do whatever

1246. I can. But [music] I'm thankful that

  1247. when you can't reach me, there's a God

1248. in heaven. Oh, hallelujah. There's

1249. somebody that loves you, and he cares

1250. for you, and he wants to give you

  1251. victory.

1252. I pray for you, folks, [music] this

1253. morning that's in that corporate work

  1254. world as well.

1255. God knows what you face.

1256. God knows the language you hear.

1257. The things you have to deal with. I'm

1258. praying that God would give you strength

1259. and help you with that.

  1260. Say, "Preacher, would

1261. you pray for me? I'm dealing with

  1262. something in my family."

1263. Preacher, I'm struggling with my family.

1264. I've got some Yes, God sees that.

1265. Got some in my family that just don't

1266. want to do right, don't want to live

1267. right, and they want to condemn me for

  1268. trying to live right.

1269. Would you pray for me?

1270. God sees those hands. I'll say this

1271. [music] to you tonight, he's able.

1272. He is able. You just keep living right.

1273. As I tell you this, [music] you're

1274. living for one, and that's him. He's all

1275. that matters, child of God.

1276. He is all that matters. And you know

1277. what? The world can say what they want

1278. to, even [music] your friends and family

1279. can say what they want to. If you do his

  1280. will,

1281. he'll be pleased with you.

1282. Father, thank you again for this time.

1283. Thank you for these young people. Thank

1284. you, Lord, for each individual [music]

1285. that's here. God, I pray you would help

1286. us to resolve in our heart, Lord, that

1287. we wouldn't yoke up with this world.

1288. God, help us not [music] to covenant

  1289. with the king

1290. Lord, that would destroy us.

1291. Lord, I love you in Jesus' name.

  1292. Amen.
