  1. So, um, we're so happy that you are here

  2. for the final sermon series of Pressure

  3. Cooker. Hopefully, you've been enjoying

  4. this sermon series. You've been getting

  5. some good stuff from it. And, uh, just

  6. before we hop into the message, just

  7. want to let you know we'll be in John

    John 18 chapter mention

  8. chapter 18. We've been in in the book of

  9. John here. So, if you want to take out

  10. your phone or your Bible, get there.

  11. But, um, Pastor Chris and Pastor Rachel,

  12. they are on vacation with their family.

  13. Uh, you know, Pastor Matt mentioned it

  14. last week, but uh, Pastor Chris and

  15. Pastor Rachel just celebrated 21 years

  16. of marriage. Can we celebrate that this

  17. morning? I mean, 21 years.

  18. My goodness, that's that's just uh,

  19. amazing and we honor them for that. U,

  20. but we are here in our one big service.

  21. So, I want to encourage you as well that

  22. if you have not met someone this

  23. morning, you say, you know, I've seen

  24. this person all the time or I've never

  25. met before. Meet someone new today.

  26. Shake a hand, get a name. Right? This is

  27. what our one big service is about. And

  28. uh we are just going to get into the

  29. word this morning. And so as I

  30. mentioned, Pastor Chris and Pastor

  31. Rachel on vacation, but I can almost

  32. guarantee Pastor Dave that they're

  33. watching right now. They're thankful.

  34. Like I said, I feel like when they watch

  35. online, I said it before, it's almost

  36. like the baby monitor, you know? They

  37. just want to see what's going on. I feel

  38. like we're one step away where he's

  39. going to have the, you know, like you

  40. can like talk to your kids in your room,

  41. like you hit the voice button, say, "Go

  42. back to bed. Lay down, right?" I feel

  43. like we're one step away from that.

  44. Pastor Chris is just going to have it

  45. like, "No, Nate, don't say that." Okay.

  46. And so, but Pastor Chris, Pastor Rachel,

  47. we love you. We miss you and can't wait

  48. to see you back soon. But in John

    John 18 chapter mention

  49. chapter 18, as we talk about pressure,

  50. um, every time Pastor Chris say

  51. pressure, I just had that song just, you

  52. know, anyone else with me like under

  53. pressure, right? Anyone else? Okay,

  54. there's some people, some of you, you

  55. know what I'm talking about. You still

  56. want to raise your hand. That's fine.

  57. But this is such a a sermon series that

  58. we feel like we can all relate to. We've

  59. all experienced pressure at different

  60. times and you know pressure has a way of

  61. attempting to rob our peace and I want

  62. to be focusing on that today. You know

  63. it can show up in many ways but

  64. pressure shows up I believe when we are

  65. faced with a truth. You know where does

  66. pressure come from? And I feel like when

  67. a truth really enters our life

  68. pressure can begin to form around us.

  69. Now, a low pressure example of this

  70. would be something like this. You know,

  71. people in your life who consistently run

  72. late. Don't point them out. Don't text

  73. them.

  74. But you know who they are,

  75. right? There are elements. Sometimes you

  76. may work with them. They might show up

  77. late. And they come up, they say, "I'm

  78. so sorry I'm late." And they have a

  79. coffee in their hand. And they're like,

  80. "Oh, that's interesting. You have a

  81. coffee in your hand, but you're also

  82. late, right? There's a pressure that

  83. sometimes can happen when you aren't

  84. dealing with the truth. The truth is, if

  85. you didn't stop for that coffee, you may

  86. have made it on time, right? And and

  87. there's things that you can begin to do

  88. to avoid the pressure that you may feel.

  89. One of the ways that I feel pressure in

  90. my life, you want to see me fold, you

  91. want to see me just crumble under

  92. pressure. I know the truth, but I

  93. crumble under the pressure is when I

  94. have to pick up medicine for my

  95. children.

  96. at the pharmacy and they say, "When is

  97. your child's birthday?" I'm like, "Oh my

  98. gosh, hold on. I know this. Give me a

  99. second." Like, it takes all all my brain

  100. power. And the embarrassing part is when

  101. I say it wrong and they have to look at

  102. me and say, "No,

  103. I got it now. Now I know it right." And

  104. there could be these moments in our

  105. lives where we feel this pressure and

  106. when we have to deal with truth.

  107. You know when we come face to face with

  108. the truth a couple of outcomes can

  109. happen. Our choices can reflect the

  110. truth that we know. The second thing is

  111. we can choose to ignore the truth or

  112. thirdly you make someone else feel

  113. accountable for the truth. So, a a

  114. classic example of this would be your

  115. choices reflecting the truth. We'll use

  116. another low-level example. Sometimes

  117. when you're driving your car, there's

  118. lights that come up on the dashboard to

  119. say, "Change your oil." Some people say,

  120. "That's a nice suggestion. I'll do it

  121. later." Right? But there's going to come

  122. a point where you have to do those

  123. things, right? You have to say, "You

  124. know what? My oil light came on. I have

  125. to get my oil changed." Right? Or you

  126. could choose to ignore it, but it'll

  127. only cause problems later. Or then you

  128. can get to the place where you want to

  129. make someone else feel accountable for

  130. the truth. Where you say, "Well, it's

  131. not my fault. It's their fault. I'm only

  132. late because this person in front of me

  133. was driving slow or I only didn't do

  134. this because this person did this or

  135. this person did this."

  136. But we have to deal with pressure in our

  137. lives even when it's difficult.

  138. It would be reasonable to say that in

  139. our life peace is something we desire.

  140. Unless you say, "No, we actually like

  141. chaos. to keep things spicy in our

  142. family. Maybe that's you. But I think

  143. it's reasonable to say we'd like peace.

  144. It's something we desire. But pressure,

  145. let me say this this morning, pressure

  146. can uh tempt us to avoid truth to find a

  147. shortcut to peace.

  148. When we feel that truth that we have to

  149. come face to face and we feel the

  150. pressure about what it means, we say,

  151. "How can I quickly get peace and just

  152. bypass the truth of the situation?"

  153. That's difficult.

  154. When truth is in your life and facing

  155. you and say, "I have to make choices

  156. that reflect the truth that I know."

  157. You could choose to ignore it.

  158. You could choose to make someone else

  159. accountable for it. Or you can say,

  160. "What choices will I make that reflect

  161. the truth that I have?"

  162. So I'm going to read in John chap 18

  163. 29-40. We're going to read the whole

  164. thing. It says, "Then g then they led

  165. Jesus from Caiaphas into the ptorium.

  166. And it was early and they themselves did

  167. not enter the ptorium so that they would

  168. not be defiled but might eat the

  169. Passover. Therefore Pilate went out to

  170. them and said, "What accusation do you

  171. bring against this man?" They answered

  172. and said to him, "If this man were not

  173. an evildoer, we would not have delivered

  174. him to you." So Pilate said to them,

  175. "Take him yourselves and judge him

  176. according to your law." The Jews said to

  177. him, "We are not permitted to put anyone

  178. to death to fulfill the word of Jesus

  179. which he spoke," signifying but what

  180. kind of death he was about to die.

  181. Therefore, Pilate entered again into the

  182. ptorium and summoned Jesus and said to

  183. him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

  184. Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on

  185. your own initiative? Or did others tell

  186. you about me?" Pilate answered, "I am

  187. not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the

  188. chief priests delivered you to me? What

  189. have you done?" Jesus answered, "My

  190. kingdom is not of this world. If my

  191. kingdom were of this world, then my

  192. servants will be fighting so I would not

  193. be handed over to the Jews. But as it

  194. is, my kingdom is not of this realm."

  195. Therefore, Pilate said to him, "So, you

  196. are a king." Jesus answered, "You say

  197. correctly that I am a king. For this I

  198. have been born, and for this I have come

  199. into the world to testify to the truth."

  200. Everyone who is of the truth hears my

  201. voice. Pilate said to him, "What is

  202. truth?" And when he had said this, he

  203. went out again to the Jews and said to

  204. them, "I find no guilt in him, but you

  205. have a custom that I release someone for

  206. you at the Passover. Do you wish them

  207. what that I release for you, the king of

  208. the Jews?" So they cried out again,

  209. saying, "Not this man, but Barabbus."

  210. Now Barabbus was a robber.

  211. I want to get to my first point this

  212. morning, that the peace you seek is only

  213. as stable as the truth underneath it.

  214. You want to find peace in your life, but

  215. you have to deal with certain truths in

  216. your life. In this story, Pilate and

  217. Jesus are coming face to face with a

  218. truth that is building pressure for

  219. them. The pressure Pilate felt was that

  220. Pilate needed Jesus to say that he was

  221. not a king or that his kingdom was no

  222. threat to Rome. Pilate is doing all the

  223. gymnastics just to say, "Please let me

  224. off the hook. Someone needs to do

  225. something." Pilate was trying to ignore

  226. dealing with the truth while holding on

  227. to the comfort of his position.

  228. Maybe some of you in this room have

  229. found yourself that place in life where

  230. you're trying to hold on to the comforts

  231. that you have while ignoring the truth

  232. or making someone else responsible for

  233. it. You know, for Pilate, a Roman

  234. governor who stirred unnecessary unrest

  235. could be let go from his position. This

  236. caused pressure for Pilate.

  237. Jesus,

  238. right? We said, "Well, Jesus, Jesus is

  239. always cool. I mean, he never felt the

  240. pressure, right?" But Jesus was fully

  241. God and he was fully man. This is Jesus

  242. who was praying in the garden saying,

  243. "God, if there's any other way possible,

  244. please let this cup pass from me, but

  245. not my will, your will be done."

  246. It was difficult. But Jesus in this

  247. moment, he's being asked by Pilate if he

  248. was a king of the Jews. And as a crowd

  249. is also asking for him to be put to

  250. death. I would imagine there were

  251. disciples or others who were close to

  252. Jesus wanting Jesus to lay the whole

  253. truth out Jesus. We've seen you do

  254. amazing things. I mean like listen I

  255. know if I was a disciple which I wasn't

  256. for good reason. I would be like Jesus

  257. come on let him know what's up. Do do

  258. what you do. You are the king. You are

  259. the one. Like let's go. And then Jesus

  260. be like Nate get behind me. I'm like

  261. okay got it. check,

  262. right? Jesus maybe felt pressure from

  263. people. I mean, like, defend yourself,

  264. Jesus. Say something.

  265. But Jesus knew

  266. that it was not his time yet.

  267. But he was operating the truth that he

  268. had from the father. So he stood there

  269. in a boldness and says, "I know whom I

  270. serve. I know who my father is. and I

  271. know what he has sent me to do.

  272. He stood upon that truth.

  273. Now in this story, right, there's two

  274. different perspectives of peace in the

  275. face of truth,

  276. right? Culture would say, "Defend

  277. yourself. Control the narrative. Get

  278. ahead of this." You know, for Pilot

  279. saying, "Control the narrative. Don't

  280. don't lose your position."

  281. Right? How can you massage this to make

  282. you look like the good guy?

  283. For Jesus, it was to trust the father

  284. with your reputation. That's what Jesus

  285. was doing. Say, I father, I trust you

  286. with my reputation.

  287. It's hard to stand in truth.

  288. It's hard to say, "Look, I I I know the

  289. truth, but I feel like people aren't

  290. getting it." or I feel like there's a

  291. lot of pressure that's building up and

  292. if I if I feel like if I just compromise

  293. in this one area or if I just did this

  294. the the the pressure would go away and I

  295. would have peace.

  296. I had a preacher tell me one time he

  297. said the truth is a truth whether you

  298. shout it or whisper it

  299. or if you completely ignore it it's

  300. still the truth.

  301. So you can live your life saying, "I

  302. don't receive that part of the truth."

  303. But guess what? The word of God is the

  304. truth. And the truth is the truth.

  305. So you can try to delay it,

  306. try to massage it so it fits your life,

  307. but you will have to be accountable

  308. before God what you did with the truth.

  309. Pilate had no peace because his

  310. foundation was in politics.

  311. say, "I need to keep my position of

  312. power. I can't have people getting out

  313. of control, getting rowdy. So, how do I

  314. figure this out?" Jesus had and for

  315. Pilate, excuse me, he had this perfect

  316. peace uh Jesus had this perfect peace

  317. because his foundation was purpose and

  318. he proved it by giving everything he had

  319. so that all of us can have relationship

  320. with the father.

  321. Jesus knew his purpose. Pilate was

  322. trying to hold on to positions and power

  323. and control where Jesus said, "I will

  324. gladly lay down my life so that others

  325. can live a full life in God." In our

  326. attempts to be in control

  327. or loving, we end up compromising the

  328. truth.

  329. Pilate was there, right? We feel this

  330. pressure. And what do we want to do in

  331. our human nature? Say, "How can I

  332. control the situation so I can have

  333. peace?

  334. How can I control the narrative that I

  335. don't look like I have issues?

  336. People can do it in relationships. They

  337. do it in their family. Like, I'm the

  338. normal one. They're the crazy ones.

  339. Everyone knows it,

  340. right?

  341. And we begin to have this mentality that

  342. says, "Well, I will control it. I will

  343. manipulate to how it serves me. But when

  344. you do that, you end up compromising the

  345. truth to keep peace because of the

  346. pressure it creates.

  347. Sometimes we do it in our marriages

  348. where how can I control the situation

  349. and ignore the truth.

  350. Sometimes we do it

  351. with relationships in our lives, people

  352. we work with or people we are connected

  353. to.

  354. say I I I don't like the pressure that

  355. this is creating in my life.

  356. How can I control it?

  357. And our and when we do that,

  358. it only creates the illusion of peace.

  359. We feel like the more control I have,

  360. the more I can create peace.

  361. The more people do what I say, the more

  362. I can have peace. Don't we believe that

  363. lie that says if everyone just did what

  364. I need them to do, there'd be no

  365. problems.

  366. None.

  367. I mean, I you know, sometimes we walk

  368. around say, "God, I'm just so smart. I'm

  369. so anointed. People just

  370. the left lane is if you're going fast.

  371. If you're not, scoot over and I wouldn't

  372. be late

  373. if people just did what I needed them to

  374. do."

  375. But the funny thing is, right, God is

  376. looking at us and saying the same thing.

  377. If you just do what I'm asking you to do

  378. when you read the word of God, it'll

  379. show you what to do. I saw a funny meme.

  380. It said, "I want to hear God speak to

  381. me." And the person said, "Read your

  382. Bible." They said, "No, no, no, no, no.

  383. I mean, I want to hear him audibly speak

  384. to me." They said, "Read it out loud.

  385. The Bible will guide you

  386. in the moments of pressure to be your

  387. your guard rails to say, "Listen, Lord,

  388. I need you.

  389. I need your truth even when it feels

  390. uncomfortable, even when pressure is

  391. building up."

  392. In John chapter 18, I want to just read

    John 18 chapter mention

  393. and starting in verse 29. It says, ' So

  394. Pilate went outside to them and

  395. said,"What accusation do you bring

  396. against this man?" They answered him,

  397. "If this man were not doing evil, we

  398. would not have delivered him over to

  399. you." Pilate said to them, "Take him

  400. yourselves and judge him by your own

  401. law." The Jews said to him, "It is not

  402. law for us to put anyone to death." This

  403. was fulfilled the word that Jesus had

  404. spoken to show by what kind of death he

  405. was going to die.

  406. The truth was Jesus had done no wrong.

  407. And pressure was building for someone to

  408. do something. The crowd wanted Jesus to

  409. be punished.

  410. Pilate saying, "I don't find anything

  411. wrong with this guy. You do something."

  412. And there's Jesus

  413. knowing the truth

  414. and standing there

  415. trusting God.

  416. I want to ask you this morning,

  417. how stable is the truth that you are

  418. building your life on.

  419. You know, we've heard it said many

  420. times, the Bible in our faith is not a

  421. buffet where we just take the things we

  422. like, right? Oh, I'll take a little bit

  423. of that. I'll take a little bit of that.

  424. Oh, oh, grace, mercy, yes. Forgiveness.

  425. Gh. No, no, no thanks.

  426. People have done wrong to me, right?

  427. love your enemies.

  428. But what does it look like when you do

  429. love your enemies?

  430. The people who just push all the

  431. buttons. Like if you've seen Elf on the

  432. Elevator, the movie Elf, when he just

  433. hits all the buttons on the elevator,

  434. like who does that for you? And they

  435. just they don't have to do anything.

  436. They're like, "Hey, how you doing?"

  437. You're like, "Oh, there they go. Just

  438. saying hi." Oh my gosh. You hear that

  439. tone?

  440. Up to something. I can't stand it.

  441. I thought it was only me. That's good.

  442. What does it look like when pressure

  443. begins to build in your life? We've all

  444. been there where things are hard.

  445. There's not a reason why they're

  446. necessarily hard.

  447. But have you ever gone through a stretch

  448. of life where it just seems like there's

  449. continually things that are going wrong

  450. and you're almost your mindset is almost

  451. of course this is going wrong.

  452. Where are you, Jesus? Because you're

  453. certainly not here

  454. and you can almost have that mentality.

  455. Or do we say, "Lord, what are you

  456. showing me? What are you doing in my

  457. life? Am I finding myself going to the

  458. word? Am I finding myself talking to

  459. godly people who are speaking life into

  460. me and encouraging me? Am I finding

  461. myself in a place of prayer? Instead of

  462. just complaining about a problem, am I

  463. praying about a problem?" Think about

  464. how many times I'm convicted myself. The

  465. times we say there's all these things

  466. that are going on in my mind. I feel

  467. like if I can control this, if I can

  468. control this, if I can figure this out

  469. and God is saying there's nothing to

  470. figure out. You need to submit

  471. everything to to me at my feet and you

  472. need to begin to pray over things and

  473. watch me work.

  474. It makes me think of, you know, when

  475. when you have family gatherings and I

  476. know for for whoever is to cook in the

  477. house, right? When the food starts

  478. smelling good and and things are

  479. happening, right, it it like like like

  480. moths to the light, people start coming

  481. to the kitchen. Ooh, what's that? Ooh,

  482. let me just And right, whoever's cooking

  483. says, "Get out of here. I'm not done

  484. cooking yet. It's not done yet. Get

  485. Sometimes we do that with God where we

  486. say, "God, let just give it back to me.

  487. I can fix it." God saying, "Let me work.

  488. I know there's pressure building and it

  489. makes you feel uncomfortable,

  490. but you controlling the situation isn't

  491. going to bring peace,

  492. but learning how to trust God, basing

  493. your life upon his truth is what's going

  494. to bring peace.

  495. My second point this morning is that

  496. embrace truth quickly. Even though

  497. pressure releases slowly,

  498. we must embrace truth quickly.

  499. We often say, "I want to embrace this

  500. truth and I hope something happens

  501. quickly." I can tell you the most

  502. practical example that we could think of

  503. is if you've ever started working out,

  504. you say, "Man, I want to lose weight. I

  505. want to do this." And you work out for

  506. one day and you feel like death.

  507. You're like, "This is not from God."

  508. Gasping for air, sweating. You're like,

  509. you know, you're like dizzy. You're

  510. like, "Oh my gosh, what's happening?"

  511. Right?

  512. And then you feel like, man, as as close

  513. as I felt to death, I want to feel like

  514. there's something that feels better. I

  515. want to feel like I put on my jeans and

  516. like, you know, or put on my dress pants

  517. and and feel like I can fit in them,

  518. right?

  519. And sometimes you got to call for

  520. backup. Like get in here. I need your

  521. help.

  522. Jesus, come quickly. Right? It's like

  523. you're trying to get it. You're trying

  524. to make things happen because you want

  525. to see these results.

  526. But you have to embrace truth quickly.

  527. says, "If I want to get to the place

  528. where I want to be, I have to embrace

  529. the truth that says I can't be eating

  530. all that I want to eat. I have to make

  531. wise choices.

  532. Even though the pressure is not released

  533. right away, even though that first day I

  534. don't feel great, and that second day, I

  535. still don't feel great working out.

  536. I know the truth is if I continue doing

  537. this, I'm going to see the results I've

  538. been striving for."

  539. You know, if we're honest, pressure

  540. builds when we delay decisions.

  541. We don't want to be honest with

  542. ourselves because it may require us to

  543. change or deal with issues we've been

  544. battling in private.

  545. When I was writing this, I thought,

  546. isn't that so true?

  547. Where we don't want to be honest with

  548. ourselves.

  549. So, why do I feel this pressure? And

  550. maybe there's things that you have to

  551. embrace as truth that you haven't fully

  552. embraced.

  553. You've been delaying it.

  554. You're saying, "It's too hard.

  555. It's too hard to gather."

  556. And I want to encourage you this morning

  557. when you embrace truth even about

  558. yourself. When you read the word of God

  559. and it holds up the smear to your life,

  560. you say, "This is a hard truth for me to

  561. grasp because I have to change."

  562. Jesus is gracious and he will walk with

  563. you through those changes.

  564. He doesn't show us the truth to say how

  565. terrible you are, how far away you are

  566. from him,

  567. but he comes alongside you to help you.

  568. But the quicker we embrace truth, it

  569. will ultimately give us peace. Because

  570. I'd like to remind us this morning that

  571. indecision is still a decision.

  572. That when we wait and we delay and we

  573. say, "I I I know I have to I I have to

  574. get the open house or I know I have to

  575. to be a part of things at the church. I

  576. know I have to do these things and I I

  577. know I should work on this in my

  578. marriage or I know I should work on this

  579. on me." And we delay and we feel like

  580. one day it's going to happen. One day

  581. it's going to happen. When I was uh in

  582. high school, I remember, you know, I

  583. would tell my mom I you know, we you

  584. know, talk and I'm like, "Yeah, I'm

  585. going to start I'm going to start

  586. working out. you know, I'm just eating,

  587. you know, eating this today, but Monday,

  588. Monday is my day. I'm going to work out.

  589. And you know what she told me? She said,

  590. "Nate, some sometimes Monday never comes

  591. for you."

  592. I said, "First of all, that's offensive.

  593. Second of all, there's some truth to

  594. that."

  595. And isn't that true for us as believers

  596. sometimes?

  597. I I'm going to change my life. I'm going

  598. to make this change in my life as soon

  599. as this happens. I I'm going to start,

  600. you know, Pastor Matt and Pastor Chris,

  601. they talk about, you know, giving and

  602. and and and you know, tithing and, you

  603. know, when I when I make this much, I'm

  604. going to do this. And my dad used to

  605. tell me the same thing when I was a kid.

  606. You know, I'd get a dollar. He's like,

  607. "It's going to burn a hole in your

  608. pocket, Nate." And I'm like, "Oh, you

  609. know, that that's all right." You know,

  610. and and he would say, "Nate, if you

  611. can't be faithful in the little, you

  612. won't be faithful in much. If we can't

  613. deal with this the truth that God is

  614. asking us to deal with now, how can we

  615. ask and trust him for so much more?

  616. You know, Pilate, I'm sure he heard

  617. about Jesus,

  618. heard about who he was and all the

  619. things that were going on. I'm sure

  620. Pilate was just trying to say, "Well,

  621. it's not it's not in front of me, so I'm

  622. not going to deal with it."

  623. But now he was in a spot where it was in

  624. front of him

  625. and he had to deal with the truth. Jesus

  626. embraced the truth continuously. You

  627. know, this is why he famously preached,

  628. "If you want to follow me, deny

  629. yourself. Pick up your cross and follow

  630. me." Right? Luke 9:23.

    Luke 9:23

  631. You want to follow Jesus, you want to

  632. follow him, deny yourself, pick up your

  633. cross daily.

  634. That doesn't sound fun. Is there another

  635. way? Is there another package I can sign

  636. up for?

  637. But Jesus said it, but he also knew he

  638. was going to walk it out.

  639. And to live in that place of truth,

  640. he embraced it daily, knowing that

  641. everything he did was leading to this

  642. moment. And for us, every day that we

  643. live, every day we are with our family,

  644. every day we are with our neighbors,

  645. every day we are in our schools, every

  646. day we're in our workplace, we have the

  647. opportunity to embrace truth in our

  648. lives that says, God, it doesn't matter

  649. what someone else does. It doesn't

  650. matter how people try to come against me

  651. because I know you are for me. And if

  652. God is for me, who could be against me?

  653. Though even, you know, no weapon against

  654. me shall prosper, right? It may form,

  655. but it will not prosper. And sometimes

  656. we have to tell oursel that truth every

  657. single day to remind ourselves who we

  658. serve

  659. and stand upon that truth that we can

  660. say the enemy might try to come at your

  661. family, might try to come at loved ones

  662. and might try to come at your health but

  663. you have to say enemy stand back. I know

  664. who I serve and I know that there is

  665. purpose in all that I'm walking through

  666. and I will trust God with every single

  667. day of my life. I will not try to

  668. control it. I would not try to take it

  669. back from God. But every day is a gift

  670. from God and I will give it back to the

  671. one who is faithful.

  672. Cuz I want to hear you. I want you to

  673. hear me this morning. I'm not saying I

  674. don't want you to mistake that. I'm just

  675. saying you know trying to bypass your

  676. real struggles that you have going on in

  677. life. Life is hard and it is difficult.

  678. But I want to encourage you to stand on

  679. the truth of God's word. Stand on his

  680. promises.

  681. You know, there's a fa a phrase I used

  682. to hear a lot when I was growing up in

  683. different circles where the phrase was

  684. perception is reality. How many of you

  685. have ever heard that phrase before?

  686. Right? You say perception is reality.

  687. It's if that's how they view it. And I

  688. totally didn't love that statement. But

  689. this is what I would say. Perception is

  690. reality until truth is revealed.

  691. So there are times you could walk this

  692. life and you can say, "I don't believe

  693. that. That's not how my life is and I

  694. don't have to receive that and I don't

  695. agree with that."

  696. But guess what?

  697. Your perception is reality until the

  698. truth is revealed to you.

  699. And you have a responsibility to then

  700. respond to it.

  701. Jesus understood there was a a a a time

  702. and a place for truth to be communicated

  703. with love.

  704. For Jesus that time would come through

  705. his death, burial, and resurrection. He

  706. stood there in front of Pilate. He stood

  707. there in front of his disciples. He

  708. stood there in front of a crowd that

  709. wanted him dead saying, "I this all of

  710. this that is going on around me, I don't

  711. have to perform for anyone. I don't have

  712. to prove anything to everyone because I

  713. am operating in the truth that it came

  714. from God

  715. even when pressure is building up.

  716. Do you know how hard that is

  717. where people who don't serve the Lord

  718. look at your situation and say

  719. you're serving God? Why? Look at your

  720. life.

  721. You're struggling to make ends meet.

  722. You have this going on in your life.

  723. This bad thing happened.

  724. But imagine when you could stand on

  725. truth and saying, "I understand all

  726. these things are happening, but I serve

  727. a God who is faithful. I serve a God who

  728. is loving.

  729. Even when pressure is building up,

  730. my prayer is that even when pressure is

  731. building up,

  732. even when I fall short, because we all

  733. fall short. We all mess it up.

  734. There are times when our our our

  735. faith is a little bit low, but I want to

  736. live my life that people say, "You know

  737. what? That Nate Ortiz, he messes up a

  738. lot of things, but he really does love

  739. Jesus."

  740. And I can get down with that.

  741. I don't want to fold to pressure. I

  742. don't want to fold to what people think,

  743. but I want to live my life to honor God.

  744. You know, I believe there is a

  745. maturation period for truth growing deep

  746. roots in our life.

  747. Philippians chapter 2:12, it says, "Work

  748. out your salvation with fear and

  749. trembling

  750. every day. May we be people who could

  751. work out our salvation that we don't let

  752. pressure rob our peace." You know, I

  753. received the truth of Christ when I was

  754. young, but had yet to walk in the full

  755. maturity of Christ.

  756. Truth received as salvation must be

  757. worked out daily in our life.

  758. Daily.

  759. It doesn't happen because you received

  760. Christ a long time ago and you say,

  761. "Woo, all right. I'm good to go. Never

  762. had no trials, no tribulations. I just

  763. get to live my life."

  764. But you have to work at it daily.

  765. And when a truth, and I know it happens.

  766. I know when I was, you know, younger and

  767. I would give a truth or a truth be given

  768. to me, sometimes I didn't even

  769. understand the fullness of it.

  770. Or I know when I would talk to teenager,

  771. I worked with teenagers for good part of

  772. my ministry career and I would talk to a

  773. teenager and I would give them a truth.

  774. They'd be like,

  775. because they didn't have the maturity to

  776. really grab a hold of that truth. It

  777. would always happen, you know, a a youth

  778. would come into to youth service and

  779. say, "Pastor Nate, I got a boyfriend."

  780. I was like, "Oh, geez.

  781. Tell me about them. What do you like

  782. about them? They're funny. Y'all don't

  783. know no one else that's funny." No, it's

  784. passionate. Stop. They're They're cute.

  785. Y'all know no one else that's cute.

  786. And I would get to this point of getting

  787. the truth is that your relationship

  788. can't be defined by physical things.

  789. best be defined by who they are in

  790. Christ. And I'd go into this whole long

  791. explanation.

  792. But sometimes I would tell them, you

  793. don't even need to be in a relationship.

  794. Okay? You can't like you are not ready

  795. for it.

  796. But they couldn't grab that truth. But

  797. there would be times where they get

  798. older and say, "Pastor Nate, thank you."

  799. I'm like, "I know. I know.

  800. I just saved you years of marriage

  801. counseling.

  802. You got caught up in that summer love

  803. that my goodness. Okay, come on.

  804. The truth that we have, let it take deep

  805. roots in our hearts this morning.

  806. Truth doesn't change, but our capacity

  807. to walk in it does.

  808. We could talk about love. We could talk

  809. about forgiveness. We could talk about

  810. peace,

  811. but it's amazing the older you get and

  812. you walk with God, how deep the roots

  813. become. You say, "I understand God's

  814. peace when he talks about it cuz I've

  815. gone through some things. I lived some

  816. life." You ever been around some people

  817. where they tell their testimony and

  818. you're like, "Oh my gosh, I'm I'm like

  819. nothing. I'm not standing next to you in

  820. heaven when we get there." When you

  821. start like, "Yo, sharing the stories and

  822. like you got a way better story than I

  823. do, right?" But they have a piece to

  824. learn to trust God because they've

  825. walked through some things.

  826. You know, Pilate,

  827. you know, he questions Jesus claim of

  828. truth.

  829. Are you the king of the Jews?

  830. Jesus refuses the political framework

  831. and defines his kingdom on his own

  832. terms. He says, "My kingdom is not of

  833. this world."

  834. For Pilate, this was this was hard for

  835. him to to grasp his mind around. And

  836. he's like, I I just need you to land

  837. land on something here. I mean, are

  838. like, are you are you not? And and and

  839. they kind of get to this place, this

  840. like little bit of an impass because

  841. Pilot's not embracing the full truth of

  842. what's going on, that Jesus is really

  843. who he says he is. And if he is really

  844. who he says he is, then Pilot, you need

  845. to make some choices based upon that.

  846. But Pilot's like, can I get this crowd

  847. to say to to handle Jesus, or can I get

  848. just Jesus to say something out of line

  849. that makes me have to respond to this?

  850. But Pilate has to make this decision.

  851. But pressure is mounting for him.

  852. Embracing truth is hard. Not because

  853. it's always hidden, but because pressure

  854. makes it hard to act on what you already

  855. see.

  856. It's hard,

  857. right? Pressure in our lives can make it

  858. hard to see the truth.

  859. It can make it hard to remember the

  860. truth.

  861. But I want to encourage you this

  862. morning, church, in my final point, that

  863. truth always has the final word. Always.

  864. Always.

  865. It may not be when we want it to be. It

  866. may not be in our timing, but truth

  867. always has the final word.

  868. You need to remind yourselves of that

  869. this morning.

  870. I say it all the time. We can hustle

  871. people around us.

  872. We can hustle our pastors, but you can't

  873. hustle God. God knows what's in your

  874. heart.

  875. God knows.

  876. God knows your innermost thoughts.

  877. He knows.

  878. That's why God wants us to be honest

  879. before him.

  880. God doesn't want us to come when we try

  881. to deal with things in our lives and

  882. say, "Well, Lord, I'm just going to use

  883. some fancy language and try to, you

  884. know, you know, smoo God and try to No,

  885. no, no. God knows what's in your heart."

  886. And when we come face to face with

  887. truth, I believe the worst choice we can

  888. make is making someone else hold the

  889. truth instead of ourselves. I believe

  890. it's one of the main reasons that people

  891. can get stuck in their faith.

  892. You know, you ignore the truth, right?

  893. there's at least opportunity where you

  894. ignore it, but there there's opportunity

  895. where you might things might fall apart.

  896. You say, "Lord, I'm coming back to you."

  897. But to make someone else responsible for

  898. the truth, really what you're saying is,

  899. I want to make someone else responsible

  900. so I don't have to be accountable.

  901. So, I don't follow Jesus because this

  902. person hurt me. I don't follow Jesus

  903. because this church did this. I don't

  904. follow Jesus because I saw this. But at

  905. the end of the day, we will all stand

  906. before God and have to give an account

  907. of our lives.

  908. And we live in a time where where you

  909. can get access to B, you know, the

  910. Bible. I mean, listen, some of you don't

  911. even understand how blessed you are to

  912. live in a time where you could take out

  913. your phone and you could have any

  914. translation.

  915. When I was growing up, if you didn't

  916. have your physical Bible in church, they

  917. pointed you to the back of the room. It

  918. was typically a cardboard box with

  919. Bibles in there and they're like all

  920. King James version.

  921. And some of you are laughing. It's like,

  922. "Oh yeah, try reading that." You're

  923. like, "Hold on, wait, what's this word?"

  924. I mean,

  925. but we live in a day where you can pull

  926. up sermons on your phone and all these

  927. kind of things and there's so much

  928. access,

  929. but there needs to be the ability. You

  930. can listen to all the podcasts you want.

  931. You can listen to all the sermons you

  932. want. You could you could visit anyone's

  933. church from the comfort of your home

  934. today. But there is something about when

  935. you embrace the truth that says, "What

  936. does this mean for me as a follower of

  937. Jesus Christ?" We have to move from the

  938. place of just receiving information,

  939. receiving information, receiving

  940. information. Because we feel like if I

  941. have the most information, I can control

  942. situations.

  943. But sometimes we have to say, "God, I'm

  944. trusting you with my peace. I'm trusting

  945. you to have the final word."

  946. We have to be accountable for what we do

  947. with the truth. Pilate was looking for

  948. someone else to blame or or or or to

  949. point to

  950. versus taking ownership of the truth.

  951. Still in John chapter 18 37-40

    John 18 chapter mention

  952. says then Pilate said to him so you are

  953. a king. Jesus answered you say that I am

  954. a king. For this purpose I was born or

  955. for this purpose I have come into the

  956. world to bear witness to the truth.

  957. Everyone who is of the truth listens to

  958. my voice. Pilate said to him what is

  959. truth? After he had said this, he went

  960. back outside to the Jews and told them,

  961. "I find no guilt in him, but you have a

  962. custom I should release one man for you

  963. at the Passover. So, do you want me to

  964. release to you the king of the Jews?"

  965. They cried out again, "Not this man, but

  966. Barabbus." Now, Barabus was a robber.

  967. Up until the last minute, Pilate is

  968. trying to not

  969. deal with the pressure.

  970. He say, "Okay, listen. I don't find no

  971. guilt in him, but maybe if I could place

  972. Jesus against something even worse,

  973. maybe the people would then make the

  974. decision."

  975. And guess what? They said, "Nope.

  976. We want Jesus to be punished,

  977. give us Barabus."

  978. And in our lives,

  979. we cannot be taking these shortcuts to

  980. get to peace. We cannot just

  981. ignore it.

  982. I want to ask the worship team if they

  983. can come up.

  984. And I want to say this, church, as we

  985. end this pressure cooker series.

  986. I just want to end today's service a

  987. little bit different.

  988. As I was preparing for this sermon,

  989. I began to think about there are some

  990. truths I believe this morning that we

  991. need to grab a hold of. And it may not

  992. be for you specifically.

  993. It might be for someone you love, a

  994. family member, someone, and it's causing

  995. pressure. And pressure is uncomfortable,

  996. right? I'm talking about that pressure

  997. where you walk into a situation, you

  998. walk into a room, and you feel like that

  999. pressure is just there.

1000. the type of pressure that says I I feel

  1001. like I can't even start a conversation

1002. with this person or I can't even begin

1003. to talk about this subject or I feel

1004. like I can't even pray about this

1005. because the pressure feels so great it

1006. feels like what's really going to change

1007. and we say well if it's going to change

1008. it'll be on them or if it's if it's

1009. going to happen it's going to happen in

  1010. in another way

  1011. and we begin to

  1012. stop praying

1013. we begin to say, "Well, I'm just going

1014. to seek peace even though I'm

  1015. compromising the truth."

  1016. And for Jesus,

  1017. he's in this moment

1018. knowing that Pilot's feeling pressure,

1019. knowing that pressure is going all

  1020. around.

1021. And I love when Pilate asks him, "What

  1022. is truth?

1023. Right? It's pilot literally asked the

1024. question, right? Tell me what is truth?

1025. And some of us this morning say, what

1026. what what is a truth? Even for you, I

1027. ask this question. What is truth that

1028. you need to embrace this morning that

1029. you've been pushing away or keeping at a

  1030. distance?

  1031. Jesus tells him, he says, "I am a I am a

1032. king, but my kingdom is not of this

  1033. world."

1034. And I believe this morning

1035. that we need to embrace Jesus as the

1036. king of this world, the king of your

1037. life, the king of my life.

1038. Not just something we do on a Sunday.

1039. You want peace. You want real peace.

1040. Embrace truth even when it doesn't make

  1041. sense.

1042. Even when the outcome is different than

1043. you thought it should be.

1044. See, Pilate, he chose the crowd over the

1045. conviction that he felt in his heart.

1046. I can tell you peace collapses when

  1047. truth becomes negotiable.

1048. Right? We just want to keep the peace.

1049. We don't want to upset people. We don't

1050. want to create any riffs,

  1051. but I don't think that's what God is

1052. asking us to do. I think God is asking

  1053. to embrace his truth

1054. so we can find true peace.

1055. Truth always has the final word. You can

1056. delay it. You can ignore it.

1057. But when you receive the truth,

1058. you begin to see things change in your

1059. life. Do you believe prayer matters or

1060. do you only do it when you're in a jame?

1061. Do you pray for a little bit? You say,

  1062. "Well, God hasn't done anything. He's

1063. not going to do it."

  1064. Jesus, he knew

1065. that he was going to have the final word

1066. when he was on that cross.

1067. and he laid down his life for you and

  1068. for me

  1069. that in 2026

1070. we can have relationship with the father

1071. and that the pressure that this world

1072. will try to put on us

1073. to walk away from God

1074. to shy away from difficult conversations

1075. and listen I'm not talking about being

1076. rude I'm not talking about,

1077. you know, at the dinner table. It's

1078. like, hey, pass the gravy. Hey, let's

  1079. talk politics.

1080. Hey, can I have another refill? Let's

1081. talk about your life, right? No, no, no,

  1082. no, no.

1083. But to live your life in a truth that

  1084. says, I'm not compromising.

1085. I'm not looking for shortcuts to peace.

1086. If we could stand to our feet this

1087. morning if you're able and willing.

1088. I want to end just today a little bit

1089. different. I'm going to ask our prayer

1090. team if if you can come up front.

1091. But I just want if you can in this room

1092. just every head bowed, every eye closed.

1093. This morning, we're going to give an

1094. opportunity not just for people to come

  1095. up for prayer,

1096. but I want to give an opportunity for

1097. people this morning to embrace truth in

1098. maybe a way you haven't done before.

1099. I think it's one thing to sit

1100. or or stand in our rows and say, "Yeah,

1101. I agree with what the word of God is

  1102. saying.

1103. But maybe today, just maybe,

1104. God's asking you, he's going to ask you

1105. to come to this altar, just stand before

1106. God and say, "God, there's some truth

1107. that I I need to embrace. Things are not

1108. going well in my life. Things are a

1109. struggle. Things are a challenge for me

1110. right now, and it's hard for me to

1111. embrace. I I feel so much pressure right

  1112. now.

1113. Some of it might be just isolated in

1114. private that you're feeling this

1115. pressure. Some of it might be public.

1116. Some of this pressure might be causing

  1117. attention in your family,

1118. but I believe that God wants you to

  1119. embrace truth this morning.

1120. Listen, peace. You want peace. Peace is

1121. produced in the presence of truth, not

1122. in the absence of pressure.

1123. I'd like to tell you this morning as you

  1124. think about your life.

  1125. You're avoiding truth.

1126. If you avoid truth this morning, it's

  1127. really what you're saying. It's a form

  1128. of self-preservation.

  1129. If I don't, if I don't address this

1130. truth, I don't have to deal with it. I'm

1131. fine living my life this way. It's

1132. worked for me this far.

1133. Don't try to control your situation.

1134. surrender it to God this morning.

1135. The last two things I'd like to say

1136. before we open up these altars

1137. that the truth only hurts when you're

  1138. living a lie

1139. this morning. God doesn't want you to

1140. hide. He doesn't want you to live in

1141. this place of pressure. But he wants you

1142. to be honest this morning. He wants to

1143. give you peace. And peace doesn't happen

1144. when there's just no pressure. But peace

1145. in me saying, "God, I choose you. I

  1146. don't want to live a lie.

1147. I want to live the truth even when it's

1148. hard, even when it's difficult."

  1149. My last question

1150. before we open these altars

1151. is, what truth do you need to embrace

  1152. today?

1153. Maybe you need healing in your marriage.

1154. Maybe you need healing things in your

1155. own life and it's causing pressure. It's

  1156. causing a tension because you're not

1157. dealing with it. You say, "I'm just

1158. trying to get through the pressure." And

1159. sometimes when we look to avoid the

1160. pressure, it comes up in unhealthy ways.

  1161. Don't justify it.

  1162. Embrace truth this morning.

1163. So right now, as the worship team leads

1164. us in a song, I want to give a moment.

1165. If you're in this room and there's some

1166. truth that you need to embrace

1167. because you're just dealing with so much

1168. pressure, there's people at the altar

1169. here that want to pray for you.

1170. But as the worship team start singing,

1171. I'd also ask this in this room if you'd

  1172. be bold enough.

1173. Just come down to the altar this

1174. morning. No one has to pray for you, but

1175. come down to the altar. Surrender

1176. yourself before God saying, "God, I want

  1177. your peace this morning."

1178. and let the Lord speak to you.

1179. Father, have your way. Have your way in

  1180. our lives, Jesus.

1181. We want your peace. We don't want

  1182. control.

1183. We don't want shortcuts, God.

1184. We want your peace and your truth.

1185. Amen. These altars are open. The worship

1186. team is going to lead us. come up

1187. forward for prayer. If you're bold

1188. enough, come out to the altar. Let's

1189. fill this altar out and worship God

  1190. together.

1191. I just want to speak the name of Jesus

1192. over every heart and every mind.

1193. Cuz I know there is peace within your

  1194. presence.

  1195. I speak Jesus.

1196. I just want to speak the name of Jesus.

1197. Till every dark addiction starts to

  1198. break.

1199. Declaring there is hope and there is

  1200. free.

  1201. My sweet Jesus,

  1202. your name is power,

  1203. your name is healing,

  1204. your name is life.

  1205. Break every stronghold.

  1206. Shine through the shadows

  1207. for light.

1208. I just want to speak the name of Jesus.

1209. Over fear and all anxiety.

1210. To every soul counted by depression.

  1211. I speak Jesus.

  1212. Your name is power.

  1213. Your name is healing.

  1214. Your name is love.

  1215. Break every stronghold.

  1216. Shine through the shadow.

  1217. Your name,

  1218. your name is power.

  1219. Your name is he.

  1220. Your name is

  1221. break every style.

1222. Shout Jesus from the mountains and Jesus

  1223. in the streets.

1224. Jesus in the darkness. over every enemy.

1225. Jesus for my family. I speak the holy

  1226. name.

  1227. Jesus.

  1228. Oh,

1229. shout Jesus from the mountains and Jesus

  1230. in the streets.

1231. Jesus in the darkness over the enemy.

  1232. Jesus

  1233. Jesus.

  1234. Your name is

  1235. Your

  1236. Break.

  1237. Your name.

  1238. Your name is God.

  1239. Your name is Jes.

  1240. Your name is

  1241. Break every

  1242. break every st.

1243. I just want to speak the name of Jesus

1244. over every heart and every mind.

1245. Cuz I know there is peace within Jesus.

  1246. I speak Jesus.

1247. We're going to continue just worshiping,

1248. but we're going to close out service

  1249. here and

1250. want to leave these altars open. Maybe

1251. God's speaking something to you and

1252. needs just more time with Jesus.

1253. But I want to just speak encouragement

  1254. to everyone

1255. that life can be difficult. It can be

1256. challenging in many different regards.

1257. Sometimes we have more questions than we

  1258. have answers.

1259. But I want to encourage you. In the

1260. middle of the pressure, in the middle of

  1261. the pressing,

  1262. Jesus is there.

  1263. His peace is available.

1264. Don't look for the easy way out to

  1265. release the pressure,

1266. but trust God in the middle of it.

1267. He is faithful. He is loving. He is

1268. kind. He's not looking to shame you or

1269. say, "Be more. Do more. Be better.

1270. But in the middle of the situation that

1271. you're going through, he wants to be

1272. with you and near you."

1273. So, I just want to pray to close out our

1274. service. And I'm going to ask the

1275. worship team if you need to continue

1276. just playing. You can stay, come up

1277. front if you want prayer.

1278. But we're just going to pray

1279. that God would help us, help you, help

1280. me to embrace the truth of his word

1281. because we all need it.

1282. And I'd like to say this, and this is

1283. why I believe strongly and deeply in the

  1284. local church.

1285. Because when you feel like you need

  1286. encouragement in life,

1287. I can tell you the times where I felt at

1288. my lowest and someone just comes to me

1289. and says, "Man of God, God has great

1290. things for you." Say, "I feel like I

1291. just want to fall over and be done with

1292. the day, be done with the week, be done

1293. with this month, or you've made a

1294. terrible mistake." And someone says,

1295. "Lift up your head. God loves you." You

1296. say, "How could he love you?"

  1297. He does.

1298. And when we come together in these

  1299. atmospheres,

1300. get some people around you. Speak life

  1301. into you.

1302. Speak encouragement to you in the middle

  1303. of your pressure situation.

1304. Father, we come to you in prayer.

1305. Lord, as people who don't have it

1306. figured out, Lord, our humanity often

1307. gets in the way of Lord, the work that

1308. you want to do in in our lives. And

1309. Father, we thank you that even our our

1310. worst moments or even in our best days,

1311. Lord, you are still present. You are

  1312. consistent.

1313. Father, we just pray, Lord, that we

1314. would seek your truth in the middle of

  1315. pressure.

1316. We would hold on to it with everything

1317. that we have. Even when our

1318. circumstances or situations make us feel

1319. different, we hold on to your truth.

1320. Even when people don't understand it or

1321. people might ridicule it, may we hold on

  1322. tightly

1323. with everything that we have.

1324. Father, may your peace precede

  1325. everything that we do.

1326. We love you, Jesus. We thank you for all

1327. that you're doing in our lives and here

1328. in life. But Lord, let not just stay

1329. here. But when we go home, may your Holy

1330. Spirit be in our mind. What truth do we

1331. need to grab a hold of? What things are

1332. you asking us to deal with

1333. so we can receive peace in a greater

1334. way, in a greater measure. Father, we

1335. love you. We thank you. Your holy name

1336. we pray. Amen. And amen. Hey, can we get

1337. give God praise this morning?

1338. And the worship team is going to

1339. continue to play, but we're going to

1340. dismiss you here. But Pastor Chris is

1341. watching and I know if I don't if we

1342. don't say it, he's going to be upset.

1343. So, we got to say it. You know, if you

1344. know it, you can say it together. Be

1345. careful what you watch. Be careful what

1346. you listen to. Be careful what you talk

1347. about. Savor the presence of Jesus. Hey,

1348. we love you and we'll see you next week.
